We emphasize the sizeable effects of absorption on high-energy `soft' processes, and, hence, the necessity to include multi-Pomeron-Pomeron interactions in the usual multi-channel eikonal description. We present a model which includes a complete set of the multi-Pomeron vertices and which accounts for the diffusion in both, the impact parameter and ln(k_t), of the parton during its evolution in rapidity. We tune the model to the available data for soft processes in the CERN-ISR to Tevatron energy range. We make predictions for `soft' observables at the LHC.
We calculate the probability that the rapidity gaps in diffractive processes survive both eikonal and enhanced rescattering. We present arguments that enhanced rescattering, which violates soft-hard factorization, is not very strong. Accounting for NLO effects, there is no reason to expect that the black disc regime is reached at the LHC. We discuss the predictions for the survival of the rapidity gaps for exclusive Higgs production at the LHC.
We suggest an NMSSM scenario, motivated by dark matter constraints, that may disguise itself as a much simpler mSUGRA scenario at the LHC. We show how its non-minimal nature can be revealed, and the bino--singlino mass difference measured, by looking for soft leptons.
A model, based on Gribov's Reggeon calculus, is proposed and applied to processes of soft diffraction at high energies. It is shown that by accounting for absorptive corrections for all legs of triple-Regge and loop diagrams a good description of experimental data on inelastic soft diffraction can be obtained. In this paper we give a brief description of the model and of its predictions for LHC energies.
We address aspects of jet physics at the Large Hadron Collider focusing on features of recent jet measurements which challenge the theory. We discuss examples illustrating the role of QCD parton showers, nonperturbative corrections, soft multi-gluon emission.
We present a triple-Regge analysis of the available pp --> p + X high-energy data accounting for absorptive corrections. We describe a model for high-energy soft interactions which includes the whole set of multi-Pomeron (n --> m) vertices, and give predictions for the LHC.
We briefly describe a model for soft diffraction. The model description of ISR, SppbarS and Tevatron data, and the predictions of the total, elastic, single and double diffractive cross sections at the LHC can be found in the original paper. Here we address issues raised at Diffraction 2000, in particular concerning the nature of the resulting Pomeron trajectory.
We present our results on soft gluon resummation in the invariant mass threshold applied to the associated production of a top quark pair with a W boson at the LHC in the Mellin space formalism.
I present a calculation of soft-gluon corrections to single top quark production in pp collisions at the LHC via the Standard Model partonic processes in the t and s channels and associated top quark and W boson production. Higher-order soft-gluon corrections through next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (NNNLO) are calculated at next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy. The soft-gluon corrections in the s channel and in tW production are large and dominant, while in the t channel they are not a good approximation of the complete QCD corrections.
We find out the connection between the unintegrated gluon distribution at low intrinsic transverse momenta and the inclusive spectrum of the hadrons produced in pp collision at LHC energies in the mid-rapidity region and low hadron transverse momenta. The parameters of this distribution are found from the best description of the LHC data. Its application to the analysis of ep deep inelastic scattering allows us to obtain the results which reasonable describe the H1 and ZEUS data on the structure functions at low x. The connection between the soft processes at LHC and small-x physics at HERA is…
We calculate the unintegrated gluon distribution at low intrinsic transverse momenta and its parameters are found from the best description of the SPS and LHC data on the $pp$ collision in the soft kinematical region. It allows us to study the saturation of the gluon density at low $Q^2$ more carefully and find the saturation scale.
We perform resummation of soft gluon corrections to the total cross section for the process $pp \to t\bar{t}H$. The resummation is carried out at next-to-leading-logarithmic (NLL) accuracy using the Mellin space technique, extending its application to the class of $2 \to 3$ processes. We present an analytical result for the soft anomalous dimension for a hadronic production of two coloured massive particles in association with a colour singlet. We discuss the impact of resummation on the numerical prediction for the associated Higgs boson production with top quarks at the LHC.
We analyse the multiplicity distributions of charged particles at Tevatron (p\bar p) and LHC (pp) energies in the framework of the independent pair parton interactions (IPPI) model. It is shown that the number of soft pair parton interactions (and therefore the density of the partonic medium) is large and increases with energy. The mean multiplicity at each parton interaction grows also with energy. This growth depends on the width of the rapidity window. The similar conclusions are obtained in the multiladder exchange model (QGSM).
We present predictions for the total cross sections for pair production of squarks and gluinos at the LHC including a combined NNLL resummation of soft and Coulomb gluon effects. The NNLL corrections can be up to 25% relative to previous NLL results and reduce the theoretical uncertainties to the 10% level.
A model for total cross-sections incorporating QCD jet cross-sections and soft gluon resummation is described and compared with present data on $pp$ and ${\bar p}p$ cross-sections. Predictions for LHC are presented for different parameter sets. It is shown that they differ according to the small x-behaviour of available parton density functions.
In this paper we demonstrate that our model which is based on the CGC/saturation approach, is able to describe the soft interaction collisions including the new TOTEM prelimenary data at 13 TeV. We believe that this strengthens the argument that the CGC/saturation approach is the only viable candidate for an effective theory for high energy QCD.
We present results of QCD corrections to Higgs boson production at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Potentially large logarithmic contributions from multiple soft-gluon emission are summed up to all order in the strong coupling. Various kinematical distributions, including the Higgs transverse momentum, are predicted with O(alpha_s^3) precision. Comparison is made to outputs of the popular Monte Carlo event generator PYTHIA.
We present a formalism for high energy soft processes, mediated by Pomerons, which embodies pion-loop insertions in the Pomeron trajectory, rescattering effects via a two-channel eikonal and high-mass diffractive dissociation. It describes all the main features of the data throughout the ISR to Tevatron energy interval. We give predictions for soft diffractive phenomena at the LHC energy, and we calculate the different survival probabilities of rapidity gaps which occur in various diffractive processes.
We discuss various aspects of the multiparticle production processes at the LHC energy range with emphasis on the collective effects associated with appearance of the new scattering mode, which corresponds to the reflective scattering and its impact on multiparticle production processes.
We study the effect of soft gluon emission in the hadroproduction of gluino-gluino and squark-antisquark pairs at the next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy within the framework of the minimal supersymmetric model. We present the calculation of the one-loop soft anomalous dimension matrices controlling the colour evolution of the underlying hard-scattering processes. The numerical results for resummed cross sections for proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider are discussed in detail.
We present results for a combined resummation of soft and Coloumb gluon corrections in squark-antisquark production at the LHC, including the non-trivial interference of the two effects and the contribution of squark-antisquark bound states below threshold. The total correction to the next-to-leading order approximation is found to be sizeable, and amounts to 5-14 % in the squark mass region 200 GeV-2 TeV. The scale dependence of the total cross section is also reduced.
The study of QCD processes at the LHC will serve two main goals. First the predictions of QCD will be tested and precision measurements will be performed. Second QCD processes represent a major part of the background to other Standard Model processes and signals of new physics at the LHC and thus need to be understood precisely in the new kinematic region available here. Furthermore, the production cross-sections for almost all processes are controlled by QCD.
We show in this paper that we have found a set of parameters in our model for the soft interactions at high energy, that successfully describes all high energy experimental data, including the LHC data. This model is based on a single Pomeron with large intercept $Δ_\pom = 0.23$ and slope $α'_\pom = 0$, that describes both long and short distance processes. It also provides a natural matching with perturbative QCD. All features of our model are similar to the expectations of N=4 SYM, which at present is the only theory that is able to treat srong interactions on a theoretical basis.
Most models for soft interactions which were proposed prior to the measurements at the LHC, are only marginally compatible with LHC data, our GLM model has the same deficiency. In this paper we investigate possible causes of the problem, by considering separate fits to the high energy ($W > 500\, GeV$), and low energy ($W < 500\, GeV$) data. Our new results are moderately higher than our previous predictions. Our results for total and elastic cross sections are systematically lower that the recent Totem and Alice published values, while our results for the inelastic and forward slope agree wit…
We found the parameterization of the unintegrated gluon distribution from the best description of the LHC data on the inclusive spectra of hadrons produced in $pp$ collisions at the mid-rapidity region and small transverse momenta. It is different from the one obtained within perturbative QCD only at low intrinsic transverse momenta $k_t$. The application of this distribution to analysis of the $e-p$ DIS allows us to get the results which do not contradict the H1 and ZEUS data on the structure functions at low $x$. So, the connection between the soft processes at LHC and low-$x$ physics at HER…
Non resonant production of WW pairs is the most important background in the Higgs search in the range 155 \ltap M_H \ltap 170 GeV at the LHC. We consider QCD corrections to WW pair production in hadron collisions and present a calculation which consistently combines NLO corrections with soft-gluon resummation at small transverse momenta of the WW pair. Spin correlations are fully taken into account in our calculation. We study the impact of the resummation on the leptonic observables and perform a comparison with results obtained at NLO and with the MC@NLO event generator.
We show that the early LHC measurements can provide crucial checks of the different components of the formalism used to predict the cross sections of central exclusive processes.
We investigate threshold resummation of soft gluon corrections for the s-channel process of a single top quark production in association with a Higgs boson in the Standard Model. We choose to work in the three-particle invariant mass kinematics in direct QCD, i.e. in the space of Mellin moments. Our results take into account terms of up to next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) precision, as well as $\mathcal{O} (α_s)$ non-logarithmic terms which do not vanish at threshold. After presenting analytical expressions we discuss the corresponding numerical results for the total cross section and the inv…
In the following we present our recent results on the resummation of soft gluon corrections to the $pp\rightarrow t\bar{t}H$ cross section at the LHC. The resummation was carried out at next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy using the Mellin space technique. Obtained results were matched to the NLO cross section. We show that the resummation leads to reduction of scale-variation uncertainty of the total $pp\rightarrow t\bar{t}H$ cross section.
We consider the factorization and resummation of soft and Coulomb gluons for pair-production processes of heavy coloured particles at hadron colliders, and discuss: the construction of a colour basis that diagonalizes the leading soft function to all orders in perturbation theory; the determination of the two-loop soft anomalous dimension needed for NNLL resummations; and a general formula that provides all logarithmically enhanced O(alpha_s^2) correction requiring as process-independent input only the one-loop hard matching coefficients.
We show that the onset and rise of QCD mini-jets provide the dynamical mechanism behind the appearance of a soft edge in pp collisions around ISR energies and thus such a soft edge is built in our mini-jet model with soft gluon resummation. Here the model is optimized for LHC at $\sqrt{s} = 7, 8 TeV$ and predictions made for higher LHC and cosmic ray energies. Further, we provide a phenomenological picture to discuss the breakup of the total cross-section into its elastic, uncorrelated and correlated inelastic pieces in the framework of a one-channel eikonal function.
In this paper, the soft gluon resummation effect in the Higgs boson plus two-jet production at the LHC is studied. By applying the transverse momentum dependent factorization formalism, the large logarithms introduced by the small total transverse momentum of the Higgs boson plus two-jet final state system, are resummed to all orders in the expansion of the strong interaction coupling at the accuracy of Next-to-Leading Logarithm. We also compare our result with the prediction of the Monte Carlo event generator Pythia8, and found noticeable difference in the distributions of the total transvers…
In the following we present our results on resummation of invariant mass threshold corrections for the $2 \to 3$ type hadronic production processes in the Mellin moment space formalism. This method is applied to the associated Higgs boson production process $pp \to t \bar{t} H$ at the LHC. The results for the total cross section, the differential distribution with respect to the invariant mass and their uncertainties are presented.
We recall the main features of the Regge approach used to understand soft interactions at LHC and higher energies. Unitarity tames the power growth of the elastic proton-proton scattering amplitude with energy, and leads to the migration of the secondary particles produced in high-energy proton-proton collisions to larger transverse momenta. We discuss, in qualitative terms, the role of processes containing large rapidity gaps (LRG), and the probability that the gaps survive population by secondaries produced in additional soft interactions. We explain how the Regge diagram corresponding to a …
In the very near future the first data from LHC will be available. The searches for the Higgs boson and for new physics will require precise predictions both for the signal and the background processes. Tree level calculations typically suffer from large renormalization scale uncertainties. I present an efficient implementation of an algorithm for the automated, Feynman diagram based calculation of one-loop corrections to processes with many external particles. This algorithm has been successfully applied to compute the virtual corrections of the process $u\bar{u}\to b\bar{b}b\bar{b}$ in massl…
Thanks to the focus point phenomenon, it is quite {\it natural} for the minimal SUGRA model to have a large soft scalar mass m_0 > 1 TeV. A distinctive feature of this model is an inverted hierarchy, where the lighter stop has a significantly smaller mass than the other squarks and sleptons. Consequently, the gluino is predicted to decay dominantly via stop exchange into a channel containing 2b and 2W along with the LSP. We exploit this feature to construct a robust signature for this model at the LHC in leptonic channels with 3-4 b-tags and a large missing-E_T.
We study the factorization and resummation of the transverse momentum spectrum of the color sextet and antitriplet scalars produced at the LHC based on soft-collinear effective theory. Compared to Z boson and Higgs production, a soft function is required to account for the soft gluon emission from the final-state colored scalar. The soft function is calculated at the next-to-leading order, and the resummation is performed at the approximate next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. The non-perturbative effects and PDF uncertainties are also discussed.
We study the unintegrated, or transverse momentum dependent (TMD) gluon distribution obtained from the best description of the LHC data on the inclusive spectra of hadrons produced in the mid-rapidity region and low transverse momenta at starting scale Q0^2 = 1 GeV^2. To extend this gluon density at higher Q^2 we apply the Catani-Ciafoloni-Fiorani-Marchesini (CCFM) evolution equation. The influence of the initial (starting) non-perturbative gluon distribution is studied. The application of the obtained gluon density to the analysis of the ep deep inelastic scattering allows us to get the resul…
We calculate the soft-gluon corrections for $tW$ production to all orders. The soft limit is defined in the pair invariant mass or one particle inclusive kinematic schemes. We find that at NLO the contribution of the soft-gluon effect dominates in the total cross section or the differential distributions. After resumming the soft-gluon effect to all orders using the renormalization group equation, we find that the NLO+NNLL results increase the NLO cross sections by $12\%\sim 17\%$ depending on the scheme and the collider energy. Our results are in agreement with the measurements at the 8 and 1…
We consider diffractive processes which can be measured at the LHC. Analysis of diffractive events will give unique information about the high energy asymptotics of hadron scattering. In semihard diffraction one may study the partonic structure of the Pomeron. Central Exclusive Diffractive production provides a possibility to investigate the new particles (Higgs bosons, SUSY particles,...) in an exceptionally clean environment.
New results are presented for total ${\rm pp}/ {\rm \bar p p}$ cross-sections, in the framework of our QCD based model (GGPS). This is an improved eikonal mini-jet model, where soft gluon radiation tames the fast energy rise normally present in mini-jet models. We discuss the variability in our predictions and provide a handy parametrization of our results for the LHC. We find that our model predictions span the range $σ_{tot}^{LHC}=100 ^{+10}_{-13} mb$. While this matches nicely with the range of most other models, it does not agree with recent ones which include a "hard" Pomeron, even though…
We propose a new set of measurements which can be performed at the LHC using roman pot detectors. This new method is based on exploiting excitation curves to measure kinematical properties of produced particles. We illustrate it in the case of central diffractive W pair production.
In this paper, a combined resummation of soft and Coulomb corrections is performed for the associated production of the Higgs boson with a top quark pair at the LHC. We illustrate the similarities and critical differences between this process and the $t\bar{t}$ production process. We show that up to the next-to-leading power, the total cross section for $t\bar{t}h$ production admits a similar factorization formula in the threshold limit as that for $t\bar{t}$ production. This fact, however, is not expected to hold at higher powers. Based on the factorization formula, we perform the resummation…
The so-called supersymmetric flavour problem does not exist in isolation to the Standard Model flavour problem. We show that a realistic flavour symmetry can simultaneously solve both problems without ad hoc modifications of the SUSY model. Furthermore, departures from the SM expectations in these models can be used to discriminate among different possibilities. In particular we present the expected values for the electron EDM in a flavour model solving the supersymmetric flavour and CP problems.
When several sparticle masses are known, the kinematics of SUSY decay processes observed at the LHC can be solved if the cascade decays contain sufficient steps. We demonstrate four examples of this full reconstruction technique applied to channels involving leptons, namely a) gluino mass determination, b) sbottom mass determination, c) LSP momentum reconstruction, and d) heavy higgs mass determination.
We present a `new generation' model for high energy proton-proton `soft' interactions. It allows for a full set of multi-Pomeron vertices, as well as including multichannel eikonal scattering. It describes the behaviour of the proton-proton total, sigma(total), and elastic dsigma(el)/dt, cross sections together with those for low and high mass proton dissociation. Although the model contains a comprehensive set of multi-Pomeron diagrams, it has a simple partonic interpretation. Including the more complicated multi-Pomeron vertices reduces the absorptive effects as compared to the predictions i…
We investigate the inclusive and jet production rates of $b-$quarks and also the $J/ψ-$meson production at the LHC in the framework of $k_T$-factorization QCD approach. Our study is based on the off-shell partonic QCD subprocesses. The unintegrated gluon densities in a proton are determined using the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin (KMR) prescription as well as CCFM evolution equation. Our predictions are compared with the recent experimental data taken by the ATLAS, CMS and LHCb collaborations.
We present an analysis of both the Neutral Current (NC) and Charged Current (CC) Drell-Yan processes at the LHC within a 4 Dimensional realization of a Composite Higgs model studying the cross sections and taking into account the possible impact of the extra fermions present in the spectrum.
We explore the capability of the LHC to distinguish the production of Kaluza-Klein(KK) excitations in Drell-Yan collisions from an ordinary $Z'$ at the LHC in the case of one extra dimension with the fermions localized at the orbifold fixed points. In particular, we demonstrate that this capability is dependent on both the mass of the KK state as well as whether or not the quarks and leptons lie at the same fixed points.
In some processes at the LHC, theoretical precisions of 1 percent are desired. With an eye toward such precisions, we introduce the theory of the simultaneous YFS resummation of QED and QCD to compute the size of the expected resummed soft radiative threshold effects in precision studies of heavy particle production at the LHC. Our results, that the soft QED threshold effects are at the level of 0.3 percent whereas the soft QCD threshold effects enter at the level of 20 percent, show that both must be controlled to be on the conservative side to achieve such precision goals.
We examine the contributions of soft gluons to the Higgs production cross section at the LHC in the Standard Model and its minimal supersymmetric extension. The soft gluon radiation effects of this reaction share many features with the Drell-Yan process, but arise at lowest order from a purely gluonic initial state. We provide an extension of the conventional soft gluon resummation formalism to include a new class of contributions which we argue to be universal, and resum these and the usual Sudakov effects to all orders. The effect of these new terms is striking: only if they are included, do…
We present a new method to test the Standard Model expectations at the LHC using photon-induced $WW$ production. Both $W$ decay in the main ATLAS or CMS detectors while scattered protons are measured in forward detectors. The sensitivity to anomalous $WWγ$ triple gauge coupling can be improved by more than a factor 5 or 30 compared to the present LEP or Tevatron sensitivity respectively.
In this work we consider two ways to improve signal to background cross-sections ratio for higgs searchings at LHC: likelyhood method and advanced rapidity trigger. Both methods are universal enough, likelyhood method can be applied to any processes with many observables, and advanced rapidity trigger can separate any colourless scattering processes and processes with colour charge at $t$ channel.
Vector boson fusion (VBF) processes at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) provide a unique opportunity to search for new physics with electroweak couplings. A feasibility study for the search of supersymmetric dark matter in the final state of two VBF jets and large missing transverse energy is presented at 14 TeV. Prospects for determining the dark matter relic density are studied for the cases of Wino and Bino-Higgsino dark matter. The LHC could probe Wino dark matter with mass up to approximately 600 GeV with a luminosity of 1000 fb$^{-1}$.
We present a feasibility study, to search for dark matter at the LHC, in events with one soft hadronically decaying tau lepton and missing transverse energy recoiling against a hard $p_{T}$ jet from initial state radiation. This methodology allows the search for Supersymmetry in compressed mass spectra regions, where the mass difference between the lightest neutralino, $\tildeχ_1^0$, and the stau (the tau superpartner), $\tildeτ$, is small. Several theoretical models predict a direct connection between thermal Bino dark matter and staus within this scenario. We show that compressed regions, no…
Diffractive physics program for ATLAS and CMS is discussed with emphasis on measurements of central exclusive processes. At low luminosities, a L1 trigger based on requiring rapidity gaps can be used, while at high luminosities, the use of proton taggers proposed to be placed at 220 m and 420 m from the interaction point is foreseen.
We use the theory of YFS resummation to compute the size of the expected resummed soft radiative threshold effects in precision studies of heavy particle production at the LHC, where accuracies of 1 percent are desired in some processes. We find that the soft QED threshold effects are at the level of 0.3 percent whereas the soft QCD threshold effects enter at the level of 20 percent and hence both must be controlled to be on the conservative side to achieve such goals.
We study the W/Z pair production via two-photon exchange at the LHC and give the sensitivities on trilinear and quartic gauge anomalous couplings between photons and W/Z bosons for an integrated luminosity of 30 and 200 fb^{-1}. For simplicity and to obtain lower backgrounds, only the leptonic decays of the electroweak bosons are considered.
Recent models of soft diffraction include a hard pomeron pole besides the usual soft term. Such models violate the black-disk limit around Tevatron energies, so that they need to be supplemented by a unitarisation scheme. Several such schemes are considered in this letter, where we show that they lead to a large uncertainty at the LHC. We also examine the impact of unitarisation on various small-t observables, the slope in t of the elastic cross section, or the ratio of the real to imaginary parts of the scattering amplitude, leading to the conclusion that the existence of a hard pomeron in so…
We describe the most recent results at the Large Hadron Collider from the ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, LHCb and TOTEM experiments concerning the elastic, inelastic and total cross section measurements as well as particle production in soft and hard processes.
