We present high-resolution HST images of all 35 AGNs with optical reverberation-mapping results, which we have modeled to create a nucleus-free image of each AGN host galaxy. From the nucleus-free images, we determine the host-galaxy contribution to ground-based spectroscopic luminosity measurements at 5100A. After correcting the luminosities of the AGNs for the contribution from starlight, we re-examine the Hbeta R-L relationship. Our best fit for the relationship gives a powerlaw slope of 0.52 with a range of 0.45 - 0.59 allowed by the uncertainties. This is consistent with our previous findings, and thus still consistent with the naive assumption that all AGNs are simply luminosity-scaled versions of each other. We discuss various consistency checks relating to the galaxy modeling and starlight contributions, as well as possible systematic errors in the current set of reverberation measurements from which we determine the form of the R-L relationship.
We calibrate reverberation-based black hole masses in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) by using the correlation between black hole mass, M, and bulge/spheroid stellar velocity dispersion, sigma. We use new measurements of sigma for 6 AGNs and published velocity dispersions for 10 others, in conjunction with improved reverberation mapping results, to determine the scaling factor required to bring reverberation-based black hole masses into agreement with the quiescent galaxy M-sigma relationship. The scatter in the AGN black hole masses is found to be less than a factor of 3. The current observatio…
We have obtained high resolution images of the central regions of 14 reverberation-mapped active galactic nuclei (AGN) using the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys High Resolution Camera to account for host-galaxy starlight contamination of measured AGN luminosities. We measure the host-galaxy starlight contribution to the continuum luminosity at 5100 A through the typical ground-based slit position and geometry used in the reverberation-mapping campaigns. We find that removing the starlight contribution results in a significant correction to the luminosity of each AGN, both fo…
We have reanalyzed in a consistent way existing reverberation data for 35 AGNs for the purpose of refining the black hole masses derived from these data. We find that the precision (or random component of the error) of reverberation-based black hole mass measurements is typically around 30%, comparable to the precision attained in measurement of black hole masses in quiescent galaxies by gas or stellar dynamical methods. As discussed in this volume by Onken et al., we have established an absolute calibration for AGN reverberation-based masses by assuming that AGNs and quiescent galaxies follow…
The masses and emission-line region sizes of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) can be measured by ``reverberation-mapping'' (measuring the lag of the emission-line luminosity after changes in the continuum). We use tis technique to calibrate similar size and mass estimates made by photoionization models of the AGN line-emitting regions. We compile a sample of 19 AGNs with reliable reverberation and spectroscopy data, twice the number available previously. The data provide strong evidence that the BLR size and the emission-line width measure directly the central mass. Two methods are used to estima…
Based on the measured sizes of broad line region of the reverberation-mapping AGN sample, two new empirical relations are introduced to estimate the central black hole masses of radio-loud high-redshift ($z > 0.5$) AGNs. First, using the archival $IUE/HST$ spectroscopy data at UV band for the reverberation-mapping objects, we obtained two new empirical relations between the BLR size and \Mg/\C emission line luminosity. Secondly, using the newly determined black hole masses of the reverberation-mapping sample for calibration, two new relationships for determination of black hole mass with the f…
We investigate the relationship between black hole mass and bulge luminosity for AGNs with reverberation-based black hole mass measurements and bulge luminosities from two-dimensional decompositions of Hubble Space Telescope host galaxy images. We find that the slope of the relationship for AGNs is 0.76-0.85 with an uncertainty of ~0.1, somewhat shallower than the M_BH \propto L^{1.0+/-0.1} relationship that has been fit to nearby quiescent galaxies with dynamical black hole mass measurements. This is somewhat perplexing, as the AGN black hole masses include an overall scaling factor that brin…
The first set of supermassive black hole mass estimates, published from 1980 to 1984 by E. A. Dibai, are shown to be in excellent agreement with recent reverberation-mapping estimates. Comparison of the masses of 17 AGNs covering a mass range from about 10^6 to 10^9 solar masses shows that the Dibai mass estimates agree with reverberation-mapping mass estimates to significantly better than 0.3 dex and were, on average, only 0.14 dex (~ 40%) systematically lower than masses obtained from reverberation mapping. This surprising agreement with the results of over a quarter of a century ago has imp…
A 7.5 years spectrophotometric monitoring program of 28 Palomar-Green quasars to determine the size of their broad emission line region (BLR) is reviewed. We find both the continuum and the emission line fluxes of all quasars to vary during this period. Seventeen objects has adequate sampling for reverberation mapping and in all of them we find the Balmer line variations to lag those of the continuum by ~100 days. This study increases the available luminosity range for studying the size-mass-luminosity relations in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) by two orders of magnitude and doubles the number…
Reverberation mapping methods have been used to measure masses in about three dozen AGNs. The consistency of the virial masses computed from line widths and time delays, the relationship between black hole mass and host-galaxy stellar bulge velocity dispersion, and the consistency with black hole masses estimated from stellar dynamics in the two cases in which such determinations are possible all indicate that reverberation mass measurements are robust and are accurate to typically a factor of a few. The reverberation-mapped AGNs are of particular importance because they anchor the scaling rel…
We try to identify the sources and systematics of the uncertainty of the masses of the central black holes in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) which have been obtained by reverberation-mapping methods. We characterize the broad H$β$ emission-line profiles by the ratio of their full-width at half maximum (FWHM) to their line dispersion, i.e., the second moment of the line profile. We use this parameter to separate the reverberation-mapped AGNs into two populations, the first with narrower H$β$ lines with relatively extended wings, and the second with broader lines that are relatively flat-topped. …
We present preliminary results from a reverberation mapping program to measure the Broad Line Region size in high-redshift, high-luminosity quasars. The observations are carried out at the Hobby-Eberly Telescope and at the Wise Observatory. The data cover 8 yr of photometric monitoring of 11 quasars, and 2.5 yr of spectrophotometric monitoring of 7 of these sources. Thus far we detected continuum variations but no line variations. We find that the continua of the high-luminosity quasars have smaller variability amplitudes and longer variability timescales compared with low-luminosity AGNs.
We present improved black hole masses for 35 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) based on a complete and consistent reanalysis of broad emission-line reverberation-mapping data. From objects with multiple line measurements, we find that the highest precision measure of the virial product is obtained by using the cross-correlation function centroid (as opposed to the cross-correlation function peak) for the time delay and the line dispersion (as opposed to full width half maximum) for the line width and by measuring the line width in the variable part of the spectrum. Accurate line-width measurement …
We have measured the host-galaxy starlight contribution to four lower-luminosity AGNs (NGC 3516, NGC 4593, IC 4329A, and NGC 7469). We include these objects with new broad line region measurements for NGC 4151 and NGC 4593 to present a revised version of the radius-luminosity relationship for AGNs.
An empirical relationship, of particular interest for studies of high redshift active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and quasars, between the masses of their central black-holes and rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) parameters measured in single-epoch AGN spectra is presented. This relationship is calibrated to recently measured reverberation masses of low-redshift AGNs and quasars. An empirical relationship between single-epoch rest-frame optical spectrophotometric measurements and the central masses is also presented. The UV relationship allows reasonable estimates of the central masses to be made of high…
An increasing number of AGNs exhibit broad, double-peaked Balmer emission lines, which are thought to arise from the outer regions of the accretion disk which fuels the AGN. The line profiles are observed to vary on a characteristic timescales of 5-10 years. The variability is not a reverberation effect; it is a manifestation of physical changes in the disk. Our group has monitored a set of 20 double-peaked emitters for the past 8 years (longer for some objects). Here, we characterize the variability of the double-peaked H alpha line profiles in five objects from our sample. By experimenting w…
We report the first results of a program to measure accurate stellar velocity dispersions in the bulges of the host galaxies of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) for which accurate black hole (BH) masses have been determined via reverberation mapping. We find good agreement between BH masses obtained from reverberation mapping, and from the M(BH) - sigma relation as defined by quiescent galaxies, indicating a common relationship between active and quiescent black holes and their large-scale environments.
(abbreviated) We show that there is a limit relation between the black hole mass and the width at the half maximum of H$β$ for active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with super-Eddington accretion rates. When a black hole has a super-Eddington accretion rate, the empirical relation of reverberation mapping has two possible ways. First, it reduces to a relation between the black hole mass and the size of the broad line region due to the photon trapping effects inside the accretion disk. For the Kaspi et al.'s empirical reverberation relation, we get the limit relation as $M_{\rm BH}=(2.9 - 12.6)\times 1…
Variability of 226 AGNs in the near-infrared $J$, $H$, and $K'$ bands is analyzed and discussed. An ensemble average for measured variabilities was obtained for various samples of the AGNs divided by absolute $B$-magnitude $M_B$, redshift $z$, and radio strength. All the samples in the $J$, $H$, and $K'$ bands are found to give significant ensemble variability, but no significant wavelength dependence is found. The ensemble variability in the entire sample combining the $J$, $H$, and $K'$ samples is $Δm\approx 0.22$ mag, while $Δm\approx 0.18$ mag for the radio-quiet AGNs and $Δm\approx 0.26$ …
We present four improved empirical relationships useful for estimating the central black hole mass in nearby AGNs and distant luminous quasars alike using either optical or UV single-epoch spectroscopy. These mass-scaling relationships between line widths and luminosity are based on recently improved empirical relationships between the broad-line region size and luminosities in various energy bands and are calibrated to the improved mass measurements of nearby AGNs based on emission-line reverberation mapping. The mass-scaling relationship based on the Hbeta line luminosity allows mass estimat…
I review the relationship between star formation and black hole building, based on spectroscopic observations of the stellar population in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and their host galaxies. My emphasis is on large, well-defined local samples of AGNs, whose optical continua are dominated by starlight. I summarize the spectroscopic tools used to characterize their stellar content. Surveys of the nuclei of the nearest galaxies show that the stellar population in most low-power AGNs is predominantly old. In contrast, young ($< 1$ Gyr) stars are detected in about half of the powerful type 2 Sey…
The determination of the central black hole mass is crucial to the understanding of AGN physics. In this paper we briefly review some methods that are currently used to estimate the black hole mass of AGNs. Particularly we demonstrate the importance of two correlations: one between the black hole mass and the stellar velocity dispersion and another one between the broad line region (BLR) size and the optical continuum luminosity. Besides applying these relations in deriving black hole masses of various types of AGNs, we also employed the fundamental plane of elliptical galaxies to estimate the…
An empirical relation between the broad line region (BLR) size and optical continuum luminosity is often adopted to estimate the BLR size and then the black hole mass of AGNs. However, optical luminosity may not be a good indicator of photoionizing luminosity for extremely radio-loud AGNs because the jets usually contribute significantly to the optical continuum. Therefore, the black hole masses derived for blazar-type AGNs with this method are probably overestimated. Here we first derived a tight empirical relation between the BLR size and the H$_β$ emission line luminosity, $R(\rm{light-days…
Reverberation mapping of nearby active galactic nuclei has led to estimates of broad-line-region (BLR) sizes and central-object masses for some 37 objects to date. However, successful reverberation mapping has yet to be performed for quasars of either high luminosity (above L_opt~10^{46} erg/s) or high redshift (z>0.3). Over the past six years, we have carried out, at the Hobby-Eberly Telescope, rest-frame-ultraviolet spectrophotometric monitoring of a sample of six quasars at redshifts z=2.2--3.2, with luminosities of L_opt~10^{46.4}--10^{47.6} erg/s, an order of magnitude greater than those …
Aims. Both the black hole mass and the X-ray luminosity of AGNs have been found to be anti-correlated with the normalized excess variance ($σ_{\rm rms}^2 $) of the X-ray light curves. We investigate which correlation with $σ_{\rm rms}^2 $ is the intrinsic one. Methods. We divide a full sample of 33 AGNs (O' Neill et al. 2005) into two sub-samples. The black hole masses of 17 objects in sub-sample 1 were determined by the reverberation mapping or the stellar velocity dispersion. The black hole masses of the remaining 16 objects were estimated from the relationship between broad line region radi…
We here estimate the mass M of the central object in five active galactic nuclei (AGNs), using the most recent reverberation data obtained by the AGN Watch Consortium. The cross-correlation function (CCF) centroids of the broad Ly-alpha 1216 and C IV 1549 lines are used to estimate the size of the broad-line region (BLR) in these sources. We calculate the velocity dispersions of these lines in the root mean square (rms) spectra and then use our results to estimate M. We argue that our technique of calculating the velocity dispersion should work in the general case of an arbitrary line profile,…
The black-hole/accretion-disk paradigm for active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is now reasonably secure, but there are still important unresolved issues, some of which will require the capabilities of an 8 to 10-m class UV/optical space-based telescope. Imaging spectroscopy with a diffraction-limited large telescope will be required to measure AGN black-hole masses from stellar dynamics for direct comparison with reverberation mapping-based masses. High spectral resolution in the UV is required to determine the mass and kinetic energy of the outflows observed in the absorption spectra of AGNs and to…
The masses of the central black holes in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) can be estimated using the broad emission-lines as a probe of the virial mass. Using reverberation mapping to determine the size of the Broad Line Region (BLR) and the width of the variable component of the line profile H$β$ line it is possible to find quite accurate virial mass estimates for AGNs with adequate data. Compiling a sample of AGNs with reliable central masses and bulge magnitudes we find an average black-hole-to-bulge mass ratio of 0.0003, a factor of 20 less than the value found for normal galaxies and for bri…
In this contribution we briefly review the reverberation mapping technique and its results for low and intermidiate luminosity AGNs. Then we present a monitoring campaign of high-luminosity high-redshift quasars which will extend these results by two orders of magnitude, probing the broad-line region size and black hole (BH) mass of luminous AGN at redshift ~2-3.
The most intense monitoring observations yet made in the optical (UBV) and near-infrared (JHK) wave bands were carried out for nearby Seyfert1 galaxies of NGC 5548, NGC 4051, NGC 3227, and NGC 7469. Over three years of observations with MAGNUM telescope since early 2001, clear time-delayed response of the K-band flux variations to the V-band flux variations was detected for all of these galaxies. Their H-K color temperature was estimated to be 1500-1800 K from the observed flux variation gradients, which supports a view that the bulk of the K flux should originate in the thermal radiation of h…
Massive black holes detected in the centers of many nearby galaxies are linearly correlated with the luminosity of the host bulge, the black hole mass being about 0.1% of the bulge mass. An even stronger relation exists between the BH mass (Mbh) and the stellar velocity dispersion in the host bulge. We show that massive BHs of AGNs (measured by reverberation mapping) and their bulge luminosity (measured by using a bulge/disk decomposition) follow the same relations as ordinary (inactive) galaxies, with the exeption of narrow line AGN which apparently have significantly lower BH/bulge ratios. N…
