The prospects of measuring masses, spin and CP properties within Supersymmetry and other beyond the Standard Model extensions at the LHC are reviewed. Emphasis is put on models with missing transverse energy due to undetected particles, as in Supersymmetry or Universal Extra Dimensions.
Run 1 of the LHC has provided three new motivations for supersymmetry: the need to stabilize the electroweak vacuum, the mass of the Higgs boson, and the fact that its couplings are Standard Model-like (so far). The prospects for discovering (and measuring) supersymmetry during future runs of the LHC are discussed in the frameworks of the constrained MSSM (CMSSM), models with non-universal soft supersymmetry-breaking contributions to Higgs masses (NUHM1,2) and the phenomenological MSSM with 10 arbitrary soft supersymmetry-breaking parameters (pMSSM10). In addition to the classic searches for m…
Experiments at particle colliders have reached center of mass energies well above 100 GeV, equivalent to temperatures which existed shortly after the big bang. These experiments, testing the initial conditions of the universe have, with great precision, established the Standard Model of Particle Physics. In contrast, the existence of the Higgs boson and perhaps Supersymmetry remain speculative, as todays searches have failed to find signs of their existence. However, the next generation of high energy collider experiments and especially CERN's 14 TeV LHC, expected to start operation in the yea…
We investigate FASER@LHC perspectives in searches for light ($0.1-5$ GeV) sgoldstinos in models with low energy ($10-10^4$ TeV) supersymmetry breaking. We consider flavor conserving and flavor violating couplings of sgoldstinos to Standard Model fermions and find the both options to be testable at FASER. Even the first FASER run allows one to probe interesting patches in the model parameter space, while the second run, FASER-II, with significantly larger detector fiducial volume, gives a possibility to thoroughly explore a wide class of supersymmetric extensions of particle physics complementa…
We present the recent prospects and strategies of the ATLAS and CMS experiments in the search for signatures of Supersymmetry. The emphasis is placed on standard signatures with missing transverse energy and on the initial data taking periods.
We summarize a discovery potential for supersymmetric particles at the \ppbar collider of Tevatron with center-of-mass energy \sqrt{s} = 2 TeV and integrated luminosity $\intlum$ = 15-30 \invfb. Any direct search is kinematically limited to below 450 \mgev. We, however, have a unique opportunity to test various supersymmetric scenarios by a measurement of the branching ratio for the rare decay mode \bsmumu. Using the background estimate in the CDF analysis of \bsmumu in Run I, we investigate the prospects for studying this mode in Run II. CDF would be sensitive to this decay for a branching ra…
Experimental collaborations for the large hadron collider conducted many and various searches for supersymmetry. In the absence of signals, lower limits were put on sparticle masses but usually within frameworks with (over-) simplifications relative to the entire indications by supersymmetry models. For complementing current interpretations of experimental bounds, we introduce a 30-parameters version of the R-parity conserving minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM-30). Using a sample of the MSSM-30 which are in harmony with cold dark matter, flavour and precision electroweak constraints,…
The Run II physics programme of the Tevatron is proceeding with more than 300 pb-1 of analysis quality data, collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. Searches for supersymmetric particles are starting to set new limits, improving over the LEP and Run I results and exploring new regions of parameter space. We present recent results in Supersymmetry with the upgraded CDF and DO detectors and give some prospects for the future of these searches.
We discuss how to extract non-Standard Model effects from B-factory phenomenology. We then analyze the prospects for uncovering evidence for Effective Supersymmetry, a class of supersymmetric models which naturally suppress flavor changing neutral currents and electric dipole moments without squark universality or small CP violating phases, in experiments at BaBar, BELLE, HERA-B, CDF/D0 and LHC-B.
The flagship measurement of the JUNO experiment is the determination of the neutrino mass ordering. Here we revisit its prospects to make this determination by 2030, using the current global knowledge of the relevant neutrino parameters as well as current information on the reactor configuration and the critical parameters of the JUNO detector. We pay particular attention to the non-linear detector energy response. Using the measurement of $θ_{13}$ from Daya Bay, but without information from other experiments, we estimate the probability of JUNO determining the neutrino mass ordering at $\ge$ …
The search for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM) is one of the most important goals for the general purpose detector ATLAS at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Already with early LHC data, the ATLAS experiment should be sensitive to discover physics beyond the Standard Model. This paper summarizes the prospects of the ATLAS experiment to find experimental evidence for Supersymmetry (SUSY) and Universal Extra Dimensions (UED) in channels with jets, leptons and missing transverse energy for an integrated luminosity of L = 200pb-1 at a centre-of-mass energy sqrt s = 10 TeV. Only a selectio…
If Supersymmetry would manifest itself at a low mass scale it might be found already in the early phase of the LHC operation. Generic signatures for Supersymmetry in pp-collisions consist of high jet multiplicity, large missing transverse energy as well as leptons in the final state. The CMS search strategy and prospects for a SUSY discovery in the first year of data-taking is reviewed.
The realization that supersymmetry (SUSY), if softly broken at the weak scale, can stabilize the Higgs sector led many authors to explore the role it may play in particle physics. It was widely anticipated that superpartners would reveal themselves once the TeV scale was probed in high energy collisions. Experiments at the LHC have not yet revealed any sign for direct production of superpartners, or for any other physics beyond the Standard Model. This has led to some authors to question whether weak scale SUSY has a role to play in stabilizing the Higgs sector. We show that SUSY models with j…
High-energy collisions at the LHC are now starting. The new physics agenda of the LHC is reviewed, with emphasis on the hunt for the Higgs boson (or whatever replaces it) and supersymmetry. In particular, the prospects for discovering new physics in the 2010-2011 run are discussed.
We investigate the prospects of supersymmetry searches at the LHC with 7 TeV energy. A new set of selection cuts is proposed based on event shapes to control backgrounds. Our preliminary studies show that it is possible to minimize backgrounds to a significantly low level and conservative estimate suggests that the mass reach can be extended to $\sim$ 1.1 TeV for luminosity 1/fb with a reasonable signal-to-background ratio.
The prospects for detecting a candidate supersymmetric dark matter particle at the LHC are reviewed, and compared with the prospects for direct and indirect searches for astrophysical dark matter, on the basis of a frequentist analysis of the preferred regions of the Minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model with universal soft supersymmetry breaking (the CMSSM) and a model with equal but non-universal supersymmetry-breaking contributions to the Higgs masses (the NUHM1). LHC searches may have good chances to observe supersymmetry in the near future - and so may direct searches for…
If collider experiments demonstrate that the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) is a good description of nature at the weak scale, the experimental priority will be the precise determination of superpartner masses. These masses are governed by the weak scale values of the soft supersymmetry (SUSY)-breaking parameters, which are in turn highly dependent on the SUSY-breaking scheme present at high scales. It is therefore of great interest to find patterns in the soft parameters that can distinguish different high scale SUSY-breaking structures, identify the scale at which the breaking …
Coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE$ν$NS), a process recently measured for the first time at ORNL's Spallation Neutron Source, is directly sensitive to the weak form factor of the nucleus. The European Spallation Source (ESS), presently under construction, will generate the most intense pulsed neutrino flux suitable for the detection of CE$ν$NS. In this paper we quantify its potential to determine the root mean square radius of the point-neutron distribution, for a variety of target nuclei and a suite of detectors. To put our results in context we also derive, for the first time, …
Flavor changing neutral currents (FCNCs) in the charm system are highly suppressed in the standard model (SM). The theoretical strategies used to suppress FCNCs induced by supersymmetry in the strange and beauty systems need not apply to the charm system. The charm changing neutral current decay D^0-> mu^+ mu^- is studied phenomenologically in the framework of supersymmetric extensions of the standard model. It is found that the decay branching ratio can be enhanced to about 10^{-10}, by having heavy non-degenerate supersymmetric strange or bottom quarks, with negligible effect on the strange …
We analyze the Tevatron reach for neutral Higgs bosons in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), using current exclusion limits on the Standard Model Higgs. We study four common benchmark scenarios for the soft supersymmetry-breaking parameters of the MSSM, including cases where the Higgs decays differ significantly from the Standard Model, and provide projections for the improvements in luminosity and efficiency required for the Tevatron to probe sizeable regions of the $(m_A, \tanβ)$ plane.
The need to understand physics of electroweak symmetry breaking is reviewed. An electron positron linear collider will play crucial roles in that respect. It is discussed how the LHC and a linear collider need each other to understand symmetry breaking mechanism unambiguously. Two popular scenarios, supersymmetry and technicolor-like models, are used to demonstrate this point.
The prospects of the ATLAS and CMS experiments at LHC for beyond standard model searches are depicted in this document. The presented studies concentrate on the search plans for supersymmetry (SUSY) and beyond in the first few years of data taking.
Cosmology now provides unambiguous, quantitative evidence for new particle physics. I discuss the implications of cosmology for supersymmetry and vice versa. Topics include: motivations for supersymmetry; supersymmetry breaking; dark energy; freeze out and WIMPs; neutralino dark matter; cosmologically preferred regions of minimal supergravity; direct and indirect detection of neutralinos; the DAMA and HEAT signals; inflation and reheating; gravitino dark matter; Big Bang nucleosynthesis; and the cosmic microwave background. I conclude with speculations about the prospects for a microscopic des…
The search for new physics is a major goal of the LHC physics program. As excitement grows for the upcoming start of Run 2, I review the CMS and ATLAS searches for physics beyond the Standard Model from Run 1 and present recent analyses. These searches have covered a wide range of new physics scenarios including Supersymmetry, new resonances, additional Higgs bosons, new hidden sectors, other Dark Matter, and multi-charged particles. In addition to reviewing some of the techniques that made the analyses possible, I will summarize what we have learned from the results and briefly discuss prospe…
Dark matter candidates arising in models of particle physics incorporating weak scale supersymmetry may produce detectable signals through their annihilation into neutrinos, photons, or positrons. A large number of relevant experiments are planned or underway. The `logically possible' parameter space is unwieldy. By working in the framework of minimal supergravity, we can survey the implications of the experiments for each other, as well as for direct searches, collider searches, low-energy experiments, and naturalness in a transparent fashion. We find that a wide variety of experiments provid…
In supersymmetric models with minimal particle content and without left-right squark mixing, the conventional wisdom is that the 125.6 GeV Higgs boson mass implies top squark masses of O(10) TeV, far beyond the reach of colliders. This conclusion is subject to significant theoretical uncertainties, however, and we provide evidence that it may be far too pessimistic. We evaluate the Higgs boson mass, including the dominant three-loop terms at O(α_t α_s^2), in currently viable models. For multi-TeV stops, the three-loop corrections can increase the Higgs boson mass by as much as 3 GeV and lower …
We present definite correlations between the CMS 5 \fb all-hadronic search employing the stransverse mass variable $M_{T2}$ and the ATLAS 5 \fb all-hadronic and multijet supersymmetry (SUSY) searches, suggesting the possibility that both the ATLAS and CMS experiments are already registering a faint but legitimate SUSY signal at the LHC. We isolate this prospective mutual productivity beyond the Standard Model in the framework of the supersymmetric No-Scale Flipped $SU$(5) grand unified theory, supplemented with extra vector-like matter (flippons). Evident overproduction is observed in three CM…
The Run 2 data taking period of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in years 2015-2018 has presented a great opportunity to search for physics beyond the standard model (BSM). It will be followed by the Run 3 period starting in 2022, and by the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) era starting in late 2020s, where the latter promises an unprecedented wealth of physics prospects due to very high expected integrated luminosity and improved detector features. The ATLAS, CMS and LHCb experiments pursued a rich physics program in Run 2, and are already assessing the physics expectations at the HL-LHC e…
Searches for physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics are about to enter a new era with the startup of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. Prospects for R-parity conserving supersymmetry discovery and measurements with the ATLAS detector at the LHC are presented. Methods for determining the parameters of the underlying supersymmetry model and the relation to dark matter estimation are discussed.
A new set of supersymmetric benchmark scenarios has recently been proposed in the context of the constrained MSSM (CMSSM) with universal soft supersymmetry-breaking masses, taking into account the constraints from LEP, $b \to s γ$ and $g_μ- 2$. These points have previously been used to discuss the physics reaches of different accelerators. In this paper, we discuss the prospects for discovering supersymmetric dark matter in these scenarios. We consider direct detection through spin-independent and spin-dependent nuclear scattering, as well as indirect detection through relic annihilations to n…
In this review we discuss constraints on minimal supersymmetric models of particle physics implied by the recent astrophysical observations of WMAP. Although the prospects of detecting supersymmetry increase and 90 percent of the available MSSM parameter space can safely be reached by the sensitivity of future colliders, nevertheless we pay particular emphasis on discussing regions of the appropriate phase diagrams, which -if realized - would imply that detection of supersymmetry, at least in the context of minimal models, could be out of colliders reach. We also discuss the importance of a pr…
We examine the supersymmetry phenomenology of a novel scenario of supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking which we call Gaugino Anomaly Mediation, or inoAMSB. This is suggested by recent work on the phenomenology of flux compactified type IIB string theory. The essential features of this scenario are that the gaugino masses are of the anomaly-mediated SUSY breaking (AMSB) form, while scalar and trilinear soft SUSY breaking terms are highly suppressed. Renormalization group effects yield an allowable sparticle mass spectrum, while at the same time avoiding charged LSPs; the latter are common in models wi…
We summarize the current status of baryon number violation in supersymmetry and provide prospects for going beyond the present reach by means of a new search for neutron-antineutron oscillations. The main motivation is the recently proposed neutron-antineutron oscillation experiment at the European Spallation Source in Lund, Sweden, which is projected to be able to improve the current bound on the transition probability in the quasi-free regime by three orders of magnitude. We consider various processes involving superpartners that give rise to neutron-antineutron oscillations and extract the …
The unknown neutrino mass hierarchy -- whether the $ν_3$ mass eigenstate is the heaviest or the lightest -- represents a major gap in our knowledge of neutrino properties. Determining the hierarchy is a critical step toward further precision measurements in the neutrino sector. The hierarchy is also central to interpreting the next generation of neutrinoless double beta decay results, plays a role in numerous cosmological and astrophysical questions, and serves as a powerful model discriminant for theories of neutrino mass generation and unification. Various current and planned experiments cla…
As is well known, $B^0_{d,s}$--$\bar B^0_{d,s}$ mixing offers a profound probe into the effects of physics beyond the Standard Model. The data obtained at the $e^+e^-$ $B$ factories have already provided valuable insights into the $B_d$-meson system, and very recently also the $B^0_s$--$\bar B^0_s$ oscillation frequency $ΔM_s$ has been measured at the Tevatron. We give a critical discussion of the interpretation of these data in terms of model-independent new-physics parameters. We address in particular the impact of the uncertainties of the relevant input parameters, set benchmarks for their …
We give a brief review of the current constraints and prospects for detection of higgsino dark matter in low-scale supersymmetry. In the first part we argue, after performing a survey of all potential dark matter particles in the MSSM, that the (nearly) pure higgsino is the only candidate emerging virtually unscathed from the wealth of observational data of recent years. In doing so by virtue of its gauge quantum numbers and electroweak symmetry breaking only, it maintains at the same time a relatively high degree of model-independence. In the second part we properly review the prospects for d…
We consider the potentials of the LHC and a linear e^+e^- collider (LC) for discovering supersymmetric particles in variants of the MSSM with soft supersymmetry-breaking mass parameters constrained to be universal at the GUT scale (CMSSM) or at some lower scale M_{in} (GUT-less models), as may occur in some scenarios with mirage unification. Whereas the LHC should be able to discover squarks and/or gluinos along all the CMSSM coannihilation strip where the relic neutralino LSP density lies within the range favoured for cold dark matter, many GUT-less models could escape LHC detection. In parti…
We give here an overview of recent developments in high energy physics and cosmology and their interconnections that relate to unification, and discuss prospects for the future. Thus there are currently three empirical data that point to supersymmetry as an underlying symmetry of particle physics: the unification of gauge couplings within supersymmetry, the fact that nature respects the supersymmetry prediction that the Higgs boson mass lie below 130 GeV, and vacuum stability up to the Planck scale with a Higgs boson mass at $\sim 125$ GeV while the standard model does not do that. Coupled wit…
The existence of dark matter provides strong evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model. Extending the Standard Model with the Peccei-Quinn symmetry and/or supersymmetry, compelling dark matter candidates appear. For the axion, the neutralino, the gravitino, and the axino, I review primordial production mechanisms, cosmological and astrophysical constraints, experimental searches, and prospects for experimental identification.
