In this paper, we study the cosmological implications of the 100 square degree Weak Lensing survey (the CFHTLS-Wide, RCS, VIRMOS-DESCART and GaBoDS surveys). We combine these weak lensing data with the cosmic microwave background (CMB) measurements from the WMAP5, BOOMERanG, CBI, VSA, ACBAR, the SDSS LRG matter power spectrum and the Type Ia Supernoave (SNIa) data with the "Union" compilation (307 sample), using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to determine the cosmological parameters. Our results show that the ΛCDM model remains a good fit to all of these data. For the dynamical dark energy model with time evolving EoS parameterized as w_{\DE}(a) = w_0 + w_a (1-a), we find that the best-fit model implying the mildly preference of Quintom model whose EoS gets across the cosmological constant boundary during evolution. Regarding the total neutrino mass limit, we obtain the upper limit, \sum m_ν< 0.471 eV (95% C.L.) within the framework of the flat ΛCDM model. Due to the obvious degeneracies between the neutrino mass and the EoS of dark energy model, this upper limit will be relaxed by a factor of 2 in the framework of dynamical dark energy models. For the constraints on the inflation parameters, we find that the upper limit on the ratio of the tensor to scalar is r<0.35 (95% C.L.) and the inflationary models with the slope n_s\geq1 are excluded at more than 2 σconfidence level. In this paper we pay particular attention to the contribution from the weak lensing data and find that the current weak lensing data do improve the constraints on matter density Ω_m, σ_8, \sum{m_ν}, and the EoS of dark energy.
Here we present results from a maximum likelihood analysis of galaxy-galaxy weak lensing effects as measured in a 12.5' x 12.5' field obtained at the Nordic Optical Telescope, on La Palma, Spain. The analysis incorporates photometric redshifts and gives circular velocities consistent with previous weak lensing work.
Analysing the weak lensing distortions of the images of faint background galaxies provides a means to constrain the mass distribution of cluster galaxies and potentially to test the extent of their dark matter halos as a function of the density of the environment. Here I describe simulations of observational data and present a maximum likelihood method to infer the average properties of an ensemble of cluster galaxies.
We present an integral field spectroscopy survey of rich clusters of galaxies aimed at studying their lensing properties. Thanks to knowledge of the spectroscopic caracteristics of more than three families of multiple images in a single lens, one is able in principle to derive constraints on the geometric cosmological parameters. We show that this ambitious program is feasible and present some new results, in particular the redshift measurement of the giant arc in A2667 and the resdshift confirmation of the counter-image of the radial arc in MS2137--23. Prospects for the future of such program…
Measured time delays between the images of a gravitationally lensed source can lead to a determination of the Hubble constant ($H_o$), but only if the lensing mass distribution is well understood. The inability to sufficiently constrain galaxy mass models results in large uncertainties on the derived $H_o$, and severely hampers the cosmological application of this otherwise elegant method. At the same time, lensing must compete with new techniques that have the potential to measure the Hubble constant to within a few percent by the middle of the decade. In this letter we re-evaluate the role o…
We propose to use a simple observable, the fractional area of "hot spots" in weak gravitational lensing mass maps which are detected with high significance, to determine background cosmological parameters. Because these high-convergence regions are directly related to the physical nonlinear structures of the universe, they derive cosmological information mainly from the nonlinear regime of density fluctuations. We show that in combination with future cosmic microwave background anisotropy measurements, this method can place constraints on cosmological parameters that are comparable to those fr…
The morphology of galaxy clusters reflects the epoch at which they formed and hence depends on the value of the mean cosmological density, Omega. Recent studies have shown that the distribution of dark matter in clusters can be mapped from analysis of the small distortions in the shapes of background galaxies induced by weak gravitational lensing in the cluster potential. We construct new statistics to quantify the morphology of clusters which are insensitive to limitations in the mass reconstruction procedure. By simulating weak gravitational lensing in artificial clusters grown in numerical …
We present a method for removal of the contaminating effects of intrinsic galaxy alignments, in measurements of cosmic shear from multi-colour weak lensing surveys. The method down-weights pairs which are likely to be close in three dimensions, based on spectroscopic or photometric redshifts. Results are dramatic: the intrinsic contamination of the low-redshift Sloan photometric redshift survey could be 80 times the lensing signal, but this can be almost completely removed, leaving random shot noise errors of the order of 10%. Intrinsic galaxy alignments, although an annoying contaminant for c…
The idea that we live in a Universe undergoing a period of acceleration is a strongly held notion in cosmology. As this can, potentially, be explained with a modification to General Relativity we look at current cosmological data with the purpose of testing aspects of gravity. Firstly we constrain a phenomenological model (mDGP) motivated by a possible extra dimension. This is characterised by $α$ which interpolates between (LCDM) and (the Dvali Gabadadze Porrati (DGP) model). In addition, we analyse general signatures of modified gravity given by the growth parameter $γ$ and power spectrum pa…
Recent discoveries by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) of four bright redshift z=6 quasars could constrain the mechanism by which the supermassive black holes powering these sources are assembled. Here we compute the probability that the fluxes of the quasars are strongly amplified by gravitational lensing, and therefore the likelihood that the black hole masses are overestimated when they are inferred assuming Eddington luminosities. The poorly-constrained shape of the intrinsic quasar luminosity function (LF) at redshift z=6 results in a large range of possible lensing probabilities. If t…
Due to the deflection of light by density fluctuations along the line of sight, weak lensing is an unavoidable systematic uncertainty in the use of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) as cosmological distance indicators. We derive the expected weak lensing signatures of SNe Ia by convolving the intrinsic distribution in SN Ia peak luminosity with magnification distributions of point sources. We analyze current SN Ia data, and find marginal evidence for weak lensing effects. The statistics is poor because of the small number of observed SNe Ia. Future observational data will allow unambiguous detection…
We study the sensitivity of weak lensing by large scale structures to the evolution of dark energy. We explore a 2-parameters model of dark energy evolution, inspired by tracking quintessence models. To this end, we compute the likelihood of a few representative models with varying and non varying equation of states. Based on an earlier work, we show that the evolution of dark energy has a much stronger impact on the non-linear structure growth than on the angular diameter distance, which makes large scale structure measurements a very efficient probe of this evolution. For the different model…
(abridged) We present the first results of our deep survey of lensing clusters aimed at constraining the abundance of star-forming galaxies at z~6-10. Deep near-IR photometry of two lensing clusters (A1835 and AC114) was obtained with ISAAC/VLT. These images, combined with existing data in the optical bands, including HST images, were used to select very high redshift candidates at z>~6 among the optical-dropouts. We have identified 18(8) first and second-category optical dropouts in A1835 (AC114), detected in more than one filter up to H(Vega)~23.8 (AB~25.2,uncorrected for lensing). Among the…
We study the potential of a large future weak-lensing survey to constrain dark energy properties by using both the number counts of detected galaxy clusters (sensitive primarily to density fluctuations on small scales) and tomographic shear-shear correlations (restricted to large scales). We use the Fisher matrix formalism, assume a flat universe and parameterize the equation of state of dark energy by w(a)=w_0+w_a(1-a), to forecast the expected statistical errors from either observable, and from their combination. We show that the covariance between these two observables is small, and argue t…
We present a new geometrical method which uses weak gravitational lensing effects in clusters to constrain the cosmological parameters Omega and Lambda. On each background galaxy, a cluster induces a convergence and a shear terms, which depend on the cluster projected potential, and on the cosmological parameters (Omega,Lambda), through the angular distance ratio D_{LS}/D_{OS}. To disentangle the effects of these three quantities, we compare the relative values of the ellipticities for each triplet of galaxies located at about the same position in the lens plane, but having different color red…
Analysing the weak lensing distortions of the images of faint background galaxies provides a means to constrain the average mass distribution of cluster galaxies and potentially to test the extent of their dark matter haloes as a function of the density of their environment. The observable image distortions are a consequence of the interplay between the effects of a global cluster mass distribution and the perturbations due to individual cluster galaxies. Starting from a reconstruction of the cluster mass distribution with conventional techniques, we apply a maximum likelihood method to infer …
We investigate the potentiality of using strong lensing clusters to constrain the cosmological parameters Omega_m and Omega_lambda. The existence of a multiple image system with known redshift allows, for a given (Omega_m, Omega_lambda) cosmology, absolute calibration of the total mass deduced from lens modelling. Recent Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of galaxy clusters reveal a large number of multiple images, which are predicted to be at different redshifts. If it is possible to measure spectroscopically the redshifts of many multiple images then one can in principle constrain (Om…
We measure the logarithmic scatter in mass at fixed richness for clusters in the maxBCG cluster catalog, an optically selected cluster sample drawn from SDSS imaging data. Our measurement is achieved by demanding consistency between available weak lensing and X-ray measurements of the maxBCG clusters, and the X-ray luminosity--mass relation inferred from the 400d X-ray cluster survey, a flux limited X-ray cluster survey. We find σ_{\ln M|N_{200}}=0.45^{+0.20}_{-0.18} (95% CL) at N_{200} ~ 40, where N_{200} is the number of red sequence galaxies in a cluster. As a byproduct of our analysis, we …
The knowledge of the redshift of multiple images in cluster-lenses allows to determine precisely the total projected mass within the Einstein radius. The observation of various multiple images in a same cluster is opening new possibilities to constrain the curvature of the universe. Indeed, although the influence of $Ω_m$ and $Ω_λ$ on the images formation is of the second order, observations of many multiple images at different redshifts formed by a regular cluster-lens should allow to constrain very accurately the mass distribution of the cluster and to start to be sensitive to the cosmologic…
Upcoming wide-area surveys in the submillimetre regime will allow the construction of complete galaxy cluster samples through their thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect. We propose an analytic method to predict the number of gravitationally lensed giant arcs produced by the cluster sample expected to be detectable for the Planck satellite. The statistics of lensed arcs can be used to constrain cosmological parameters. This computation implies the choice of an analytic cluster model which has to reproduce the lensing properties of realistic galaxy clusters. Comparing the results of analytic comput…
Gravitational lensing of background compact objects like active galactic nuclei and quasars, by extended intermediate mass lenses such as globular clusters and and dark matter clumps with masses 10^5 - 10^8 M_sun, is considered. It is shown that observational study of the galaxy-quasar's associations is a powerful direct observational test of the nature of massive galaxy haloes. Optical interferometric observations with VLTI and Keck instruments are able to constrain masses and number of substructure halo objects. Evidence of gravitational lensing by globular clusters in haloes of spiral and e…
We present a maximum-likelihood analysis of galaxy-galaxy lensing effects in galaxy clusters and in the field. The aim is to determine the accuracy and robustness of constraints that can be obtained on galaxy halo properties in both environments - the high density cluster and the low density field. This paper is theoretically motivated, therefore, we work exclusively with simulated data (nevertheless defined to match observations) to study the accuracy with which input parameters for mass distributions for galaxies can be extracted. We model galaxies in the cluster and the field using a wide r…
Warm Dark Matter (WDM) has been invoked to resolve apparent conflicts of Cold Dark Matter (CDM) models with observations on subgalactic scales. In this work we provide a new and independent lower limit for the WDM particle mass (e.g. sterile neutrino) through the analysis of image fluxes in gravitationally lensed QSOs. Starting from a theoretical unperturbed cusp configuration we analyze the effects of intergalactic haloes in modifying the fluxes of QSO multiple images, giving rise to the so-called anomalous flux ratio. We found that the global effect of such haloes strongly depends on their m…
We try to explain quasar-galaxy associations by gravitational lensing by globular clusters, located in the halos of foreground galaxies. We propose observational test for verification of this hypothesis. We processed SUPERCOSMOS sky survey and found overdensities of star-like sources with zero proper motions in the vicinities of foreground galaxies from CfA3 catalog. We show mean effect for galaxies with different redshifts. Two effects can explain observational data - these are lensing by globular clusters and lensing by dwarf galaxies. We made CCD 3-color photometry with 2.0-1.2 meter telesc…
If the winds of an asymptotic-giant-branch stars are sufficiently strong are slightly asymmetric, they can alter the star's trajectory through a globular cluster; therefore, if these winds are asymmetric, one would expect young white dwarfs to be less radially concentrated than either their progenitors or older white dwarfs in globular clusters. This latter effect has recently been observed. Additionally the young white dwarfs should have larger typical velocities than their progenitors. After phase mixing this latter effect is vastly diminished relative to the changes in the spatial distribut…
Weak lensing surveys have become a powerful tool for mapping mass distributions and constraining the expansion history of our Universe, but continuum surveys must average over a large number of galaxies to average down the ellipticity noise due to the unknown ellipticity and orientation of the lensed galaxies. This Letter presents a technique for measuring weak lensing with velocity maps that avoids the ellipticity noise. By studying the inherent noise characteristics, we argue this new technique could rival or exceed the sensitivity of traditional continuum observations for upcoming HI radio …
Gravitational lensing can be used to directly constrain the projected density profile of galaxy clusters. We discuss possible future constraints from lensing of the CMB temperature and polarization, and compare to results from galaxy weak lensing. We model the moving lens and kinetic SZ signals that confuse the temperature CMB lensing when cluster velocities and angular momenta are unknown, and show how they degrade parameter constraints. The CMB polarization cluster lensing signal is ~1 micro-Kelvin for massive clusters and challenging to detect; however it should be significantly cleaner tha…
A radio-based search for strong gravitational lensing, with image separations in the range 160-300 milliarcsec (mas), has yielded a null result for a sample of 1665 sources (Augusto, Wilkinson & Browne 1998) whose mean redshift is estimated to be ~1.3. The lensing rate for this previously-unexplored separation range, <1:555 at the 95% confidence level, is less than on arcsecond-scales - as expected from models of lensing galaxy populations. Lensing on 160-300 mas scales is expected to arise predominantly from spiral galaxies at a rate dependent on the disk-halo mass ratio and the evolving numb…
We examine the prospect of using the observed abundance of weak gravitational lenses to constrain the equation-of-state parameter w of the dark energy. Here we solve the spherical-collapse model with dark energy, clarifying some ambiguities found in the literature, and provide fitting formulas for the overdensity at virialization and the linear-theory overdensity at collapse. We then compute the variation in the predicted weak-lens abundance with w. We find that the predicted redshift distribution and number count of weak lenses are highly degenerate in w and Ω_0. If we fix Ω_0 the number coun…
Weak lensing observations have the potential to be even more powerful than cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations in constraining cosmological parameters. However, the practical limits to weak lensing observations are not known. Most theoretical studies of weak lensing constraints on cosmology assume that the only limits are shot noise on small scales, and cosmic variance on large scales. For future large surveys, shot noise will be so low that other, systematic errors will likely dominate. Here we examine a potential source of additive systematic error for ground-based observations: s…
A single very deep $10'$ field has been imaged to $r \sim 26$. There are 2682 galaxies with $23 \le r \le 26$ with a size significantly larger than the seeing disk in the field. After correcting for telescope aberrations, possible guiding errors, and signal degradation due to seeing, I find a polarization signal of amplitude $|p|=2.7\%$, with an uncertainty of 1.2\% (95\% confidence limit). For the 1773 galaxies with $23 \le r \le 25$, the measured amplitude is 2.4\% $\pm$ 1.2\% (95\% confidence limit). If this observed polarization is due to gravitational lensing by large scale structure, cos…
I shall outline the basic principles and some observational aspects of weak gravitational lensing, and discuss several applications of this powerful tool in observational cosmology. It will be explained why the applications have been restricted to optical observations up to now, and why SKA is going to change this. I conclude with a few general remarks on a comparison between SKA and the NGST, both being facilities which will provide a tremendous step forward in radio and near-IR astronomy, respectively, into completely unknown territory.
In recent years various models for the Galactic distribution of massive compact halo objects (MACHOs) have been proposed for the interpretation of microlensing toward the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). A direct way to fit the best model is by measuring the lens parameters, which can be obtained by measuring the Einstein crossing time and the parallax effect on the microlensing light curve and by astrometry of centroids of images. In this work, the theoretical distribution of these parameters is obtained for the various power-law Galactic dark halo models and MACHO mass functions (MF). For self-…
Upcoming Weak Lensing (WL) surveys can be used to constrain Dark Energy (DE) properties, namely if tomographic techniques are used to improve their sensitivity. In this work, we use a Fisher matrix technique to compare the power of CMB anisotropy and polarization data with tomographic WL data, in constraining DE parameters. Adding WL data to available CMB data improves the detection of all cosmological parameters, but the impact is really strong when DE--DM coupling is considered, as WL tomography can then succeed to reduce the errors on some parameters by factors >10.
Modern applications of strong gravitational lensing require the ability to use precise and varied observational data to constrain complex lens models. I discuss two sets of computational methods for lensing calculations. The first is a new algorithm for solving the lens equation for general mass distributions. This algorithm makes it possible to apply arbitrarily complicated models to observed lenses. The second is an evaluation of techniques for using observational data including positions, fluxes, and time delays of point-like images, as well as maps of extended images, to constrain models o…
Using the linear theory of perturbations in General Relativity, we express a set of consistency relations that can be observationally tested with current and future large scale structure surveys. We then outline a stringent model-independent program to test gravity on cosmological scales. We illustrate the feasibility of such a program by jointly using several observables like peculiar velocities, galaxy clustering and weak gravitational lensing. After addressing possible observational or astrophysical caveats like galaxy bias and redshift uncertainties, we forecast in particular how well one …
Gravitational Lensing is an efficient tool to probe: the mass distribution of collapsed systems: galaxies and clusters; high redshift objects thanks to the gravitational amplification; and the geometry of the Universe. I will review here some important aspects of lensing and related issues in observational cosmology.
In this brief review I consider the advances made in weak gravitational lensing over the last 8 years, concentrating on the large scales - cosmic shear. I outline the theoretical developments, observational status, and the challenges which cosmic shear must overcome to realise its full potential. Finally I consider the prospects for probing Dark Energy and extra-dimensional gravity theories with future experiments.
We use galaxy groups selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) together with mass models for individual groups to study the galaxy-galaxy lensing signals expected from galaxies of different luminosities and morphological types. We compare our model predictions with the observational results obtained from the SDSS by Mandelbaum et al. (2006) for the same samples of galaxies. The observational results are well reproduced in a $Λ$CDM model based on the WMAP 3-year data, but a $Λ$CDM model with higher $σ_8$, such as the one based on the WMAP 1-year data, significantly over-predicts the gala…
The photometric data collected by OGLE-III during the 2001 and 2002 observational campaigns aiming at detection of planetary or low-luminosity object transits were corrected for small scale systematic effects using the data pipeline by Kruszewski and Semeniuk and searched again for low amplitude transits. Sixteen new objects with small transiting companions, additional to previously found samples, were discovered. Most of them are small amplitude cases which remained undetected in the original data. Several new objects seem to be very promising candidates for systems containing substellar obje…
Weak gravitational lensing has several important effects on the cosmic microwave background (CMB): it changes the CMB power spectra, induces non-Gaussianities, and generates a B-mode polarization signal that is an important source of confusion for the signal from primordial gravitational waves. The lensing signal can also be used to help constrain cosmological parameters and lensing mass distributions. We review the origin and calculation of these effects. Topics include: lensing in General Relativity, the lensing potential, lensed temperature and polarization power spectra, implications for c…
Observational evidence shows that gravitational lensing induces an angular correlation between the distribution of galaxies and much more distant QSOs. We use weak gravitational lensing theory to calculate this angular correlation, updating previous calculations and presenting new results exploring the dependence of the correlation on the large-scale structure. We study the dependence of the predictions on a variety of cosmological models, such as cold dark matter models, mixed dark matter models, and models based on quintessence. We also study the dependence on the assumptions made about the …
