The spatial distribution of the SMC stellar component is investigated from 2MASS data. The morphology of the different age populations is presented. The center of the distribution is calculated and compared with previous estimations. The rotation of the stellar content and possible consequence of dark matter presence are discussed. The different stellar populations are identified through a CMD diagram of the 2MASS data. Isopleth contour maps are produced in every case, to reveal the spatial distribution. The derived density profiles are discussed. The older stellar population follows an exponential profile at projected diameters of about 5 kpc (~5 deg) for the major axis and ~4 kpc for the minor axis, centred at RA: 0h:51min, Dec: -73deg 7' (J2000.0). The centre coordinates are found the same for all the different age population maps and are in good accordance with the kinematical centre of the SMC. However they are found considerably different from the coordinates of the centre of the gas distribution. The fact that the older population found on an exponential disk, gives evidence that the stellar content is rotating, with a possible consequence of dark matter presence. The strong interactions between the MCs and the MilkyWay might explain the difference in the distributions of the stellar and gas components. The lack in the observed velocity element, that implies absence of rotation, and contradicts with the consequences of exponential profile of the stellar component, may also be a result of the gravitational interactions.
We present ground-based {\it B} and {\it R}-band color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of unprecedented depth for twelve fields in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). They reach the oldest main-sequence turnoffs and cover a wide range of galactocentric distances up to $\sim4\arcdeg$ from the SMC center, and are located at different position angles. A picture of the stellar content in our SMC fields is presented, through the comparison with theoretical isochrones. Our study confirms the existence of strong population gradients and spatial variation in the SMC stellar content. None of the SMC fields pre…
We report the detection of intermediate-age and old stars belonging to the SMC at 6.5 kpc from the SMC center in the southern direction. We show, from the analysis of three high quality 34\arcmin $\times$ 33\arcmin CMDs, that the age composition of the stellar population is similar at galactocentric distances of $\thicksim$4.7 kpc, $\thicksim$5.6 kpc, and $\thicksim$6.5 kpc. The surface brightness profile of the SMC follows an exponential law, with no evidence of truncation, all the way out to 6.5 kpc. These results, taken together, suggest that the SMC `disk' population is dominating over a p…
We present near infrared JHK imaging of the Small Magellanic Cloud compact H II region N81 using the ISAAC camera at the ESO Very Large Telescope (Antu). Our analysis of the stellar environment of this young massive star region reveals the presence of three new stellar populations in the surrounding field which are mainly composed of low mass stars. The main population is best fitted by evolutionary models for about 2 solar mass stars with an age of 1 Gyr. We argue that these populations are not physically associated with the H II region N81. Instead they are the result of a number of low mass…
We present an analysis of the spatial distribution of various stellar populations within the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. We use optically selected stellar samples with mean ages between ~9 and ~1000 Myr, and existing stellar cluster catalogues to investigate how stellar structures form and evolve within the LMC/SMC. We use two statistical techniques to study the evolution of structure within these galaxies, the $Q$-parameter and the two-point correlation function (TPCF). In both galaxies we find the stars are born with a high degree of substructure (i.e. are highly fractal) and that the…
We present deep color-magnitud diagrams (CMDs) reaching the oldest main-sequence turnoffs for 12 fields in the SMC. The {\it B}-band and {\it R}-band observations were performed using the 100-inch Irénée du Pont telescope at Las Campanas Observatory, Chile, during four different campaigns (2001-2004). Our fields cover a wide range of galactocentric distance ranging from $\sim1°$ to $\sim4°$ from the center of the galaxy and are located a different position angles. Photometry was carried out using DAOPHOT II/ALLSTAR/ALLFRAME. Teramo isochrones have been overlapped. All our unprecedented deep gr…
A mosaic of four UIT far-UV (FUV; 1620A) images, which covers most of the SMC bar, is presented, with derived stellar and HII region photometry. The UV morphology of the SMC's Bar shows that recent star formation there has left striking features including: a) four concentrations of UV-bright stars spread from northeast to southwest at nearly equal (~30 arcmin=0.5 kpc) spacings; b) one concentration comprising a well-defined 8-arcmin diameter ring surrounded by a larger H-alpha ring, suggestive of sequential star formation. FUV PSF photometry is obtained for 11,306 stars, and FUV photometry is …
An analysis of high-resolution VLT/UVES spectra of two B-type main sequence stars, NGC 346-11 and AV 304, in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), has been undertaken, using the non-LTE TLUSTY model atmospheres to derive the stellar parameters and chemical compositions of each star. The chemical compositions of the two stars are in reasonable agreement. Moreover, our stellar analysis agrees well with earlier analyses of H II regions. The results derived here should be representative of the current base-line chemical composition of the SMC interstellar medium as derived from B-type stars.
Despite a resurgence of effort over the last decade in the area of massive stars there is still ambiguity over their evolutionary path, contamination of their surface abundances and the behaviour of their stellar winds. Here 10 SMC B-type supergiants are analysed applying a unified model atmosphere code FASTWIND to intermediate resolution spectra from the ESO Multi Mode Instrument (EMMI) on the NTT telescope. Combined with the 8 targets analysed in paper 1, this work provides observational results on the properties of the winds and chemical compositions of B-type supergiants in the SMC. This p…
New abundances of N, O, Na, Mg, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, Fe, Sr, Zr, and Ba are presented for 10 A-type supergiants in the SMC, plus upper limits for C. In interpreting the CNO results for constraints on stellar evolution theories, careful attention has been paid to the comparison abundances, i.e., the present day abundances of SMC nebulae and B-dwarf stars. These new results are also compared to published results from F-K supergiant analyses, and found to be in good agreement when both sets of data are carefully examined as differential (SMC minus Galactic standard) abundances. With the exception …
The High Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXRB's) SMC X-1 and 4U1700-37 have been observed with FUSE to study the effect of the X-ray source on the stellar wind of the primary. In both systems phase dependent changes in the wind lines have been observed, indicating the creation of a X-ray ionization zone in the stellar wind. The high X-ray luminosity of SMC X-1 ionizes much of the wind and leaves a Stromgren zone. This disrupts the resonance-line acceleration of the wind in portions of the orbit, quencing the wind and disrupting the mass flow. A similar but less dramatic effect was found for the first ti…
Magellanic Cloud Planetary Nebulae (PNs) offer insight of both the population and evolution of low- and intermediate-mass stars, in environments that are free of the distance bias and the differential reddening that hinder the observations of the Galactic sample. The study of LMC and SMC PNs also offers the direct comparison of stellar populations with different metallicity. We present a selection of the results from our recent HST surveys, including (1) the morphological analysis of Magellanic PNs, and the statistics of the morphological samples in the LMC and the SMC; (2) the surface brightn…
Using Hubble Space Telescope observations with STIS, we study the main exciting stars of N81, a high excitation compact Hii region in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). These far UV observations are the first spectroscopic measurements of stars in such a region and reveal features characteristic of an O6-O8 stellar type. The astonishing weakness of their wind profiles and their sub-luminosity (up to ~ 2 mag fainter in Mv than the corresponding dwarfs) make these stars a unique stellar population in the Magellanic Clouds. Our analysis suggests that they are probably in the Hertzsprung-Russell di…
The projected distribution of stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) from the Magellanic Clouds Photometric Survey is analysed. Stars of different ages are selected via criteria based on V magnitude and V-I colour, and the degree of `grouping' as a function of age is studied. We quantify the degree of structure using the two-point correlation function and a method based on the Minimum Spanning Tree and find that the overall structure of the SMC is evolving from a high degree of sub-structure at young ages (~10 Myr) to a smooth radial density profile. This transition is gradual and at ~75 My…
We calculate a grid of models with and without the effects of axial rotation for massive stars in the range of 9 to 60 M$_{\odot}$ and metallicity $Z$ = 0.004 appropriate for the SMC. Remarkably, the ratios $Ω/Ω_{\mathrm{crit}}$ of the angular velocity to the break-up angular velocity grow strongly during the evolution of high mass stars, contrary to the situation at $Z$ = 0.020. The reason is that at low $Z$, mass loss is smaller and the removal of angular momentum during evolution much weaker, also there is an efficient outward transport of angular momentum by meridional circulation. Thus, a…
NGC 602 is a young stellar cluster located in a peripheral region of the Small Magellanic Cloud known as the wing. Far from the main body of the galaxy and abutting the Magellanic Bridge, the SMC's wing is characterized by low gas and stellar content. With deep optical imaging from the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), we have discovered an extensive pre-Main Sequence (PMS) population, with stellar masses in the range 0.6-3 Solar masses. These low mass PMS stars formed coevally with the central cluster about 4 Myr ago. Spitzer Space Telescope (Spitzer) …
The Magellanic Clouds (MCs) present a rich system of stellar clusters that can be used to probe the dynamical and chemical evolution of these neighboring and interacting irregular galaxies. In particular, these stellar clusters (SCs) present combinations of age and metallicity that are not found for this class of objects in the Milky Way, being therefore very useful templates to test and to calibrate integrated light simple stellar population (SSP) models applied to unresolved distance galaxies. On its turn, the age and metallicity for a cluster can be determined spatially resolving its stars,…
The stellar properties of Sk41 (AB4, WN5h), the only known single Wolf-Rayet star in the SMC, are derived from ultraviolet (IUE), optical (AAT) and near-IR (NTT) spectroscopy. Contrary to expectations, the stellar properties of Sk41 are typical of equivalent WN stars in the Galaxy and LMC, with T=42kK, log(L/Lo)=5.7, v_inf=1300 km/s, Mdot/sqrt(f)=3x10^-5 Mo/yr and H/He=2 by number, where f is the volume filling factor. The stellar luminosity of Sk41 is 50% below the minimum value predicted by single star evolutionary models at the metallicity of the SMC. Emission line luminosities of HeII 4686…
Recent observations of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) have revealed that the HI gas shows a significant amount of rotation (V_c 60 km/s), while no or little rotation is evident for the old stellar populations. We suggest that this unique kinematical difference between these components in the SMC can be caused by a major merger event which occurred in the early stage of the SMC formation. Our simulations show that dissipative dwarf-dwarf merging can transform two gas-rich dwarf irregulars into a new dwarf, which consists of a spheroidal stellar component and a rotating extended HI disk. The r…
We present a study of optical spectra of the Wolf--Rayet star AzV 336a (= SMC WR7) in the Small Magellanic Cloud. Our study is based on data obtained at several Observatories between 1988 and 2001. We find SMC WR7 to be a double lined WN+O6 spectroscopic binary with an orbital period of 19.56 days. The radial velocities of the He absorption lines of the O6 component and the strong He{\sc ii} emission at $λ$4686Åof the WN component describe antiphased orbital motions. However, they show a small phase shift of $\sim$ 1 day. We discuss possible explanations for this phase shift. The amplitude of …
We present a study of molecular hyrogen (H_2) in the SMC gas, based on space shuttle Far UV spectroscopy with ORFEUS and the Tuebingen echelle spectrograph, in the line of sight to the SMC star HD 5980. 17 absorption lines from the Lyman band have been analysed. Our line of sight crosses two clouds within the SMC. We detect a cool molecular component near +120 km/s, where the H_2 from the lowest 3 rotational states (J<3) is found. For this cloud we derive an excitation temperature of 70 K, probably the kinetic temerature of the gas. The cloud is located in the SMC foreground. Another SMC compo…
We present the most likely optical counterparts of 113 X-ray sources detected in our Chandra survey of the central region of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) based on the OGLE-II and MCPS catalogs. We estimate that the foreground contamination and chance coincidence probability are minimal for the bright optical counterparts (corresponding to OB type stars; 35 in total). We propose here for the first time 13 High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs), of which 4 are Be/X-ray binaries (Be-XRBs), and we confirm the previous classification of 18 Be-XRBs. We estimate that the new candidate Be-XRBs have an a…
We present a study on the central stars (CSs) of Planetary Nebulae (PNe) observed in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph instrument on-board the HST. The stellar magnitudes have been measured using broad-band photometry, and Zanstra analysis of the nebulae provided the stellar temperatures. From the location of the CSs on the HR diagram, and by comparing the observed CSs with current models of stellar evolution, we infer the CSs masses. We examine closely the possibility of light contamination in the bandpass from an unrecognized stellar companion, an…
This article compares the Ks magnitude distribution of Small Magellanic Cloud asymptotic giant branch stars obtained from the DENIS and 2MASS data with theoretical distributions. Theoretical Ks magnitude distributions have been constructed using up-to-date stellar evolution calculations for low and intermediate-mass stars, and in particular for thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch stars. Separate fits of the magnitude distributions of carbon- and oxygen-rich stars allowed us to constrain the metallicity distribution across the galaxy and its star formation rate. The Small Magellanic Cloud…
We investigate the mass loss of highly evolved, low- and intermediate mass stars and stellar samples with subsolar metallicity. We give a qualitative as well as quantitative description which can be applied to LMC/SMC-type stellar populations. For that purpose we apply the same approach as we did for solar metallicity stars and calculate hydrodynamical wind models including dust formation with LMC and SMC abundances under consideration of an adapted model assumption. In particular, we improved the treatment of the radiative transfer problem in order to accommodate larger non-local contribution…
We present three color, BVI maps of the Small Magellanic Cloud. The maps contain precise photometric and astrometric data for about 2.2 million stars from the central regions of the SMC bar covering ~2.4 square degrees on the sky. Mean brightness of stars is derived from observations collected in the course of the OGLE-II microlensing search from about 130, 30 and 15 measurements in the I, V and B-bands, respectively. Accuracy of the zero points of photometry is about 0.01 mag, and astrometry 0.15 arcsec (with possible systematic error up to 0.7 arcsec). Color-magnitude diagrams of observed fi…
We present here the results of an investigation of the pulse averaged and pulse phase resolved energy spectra of two high luminosity accretion powered X-ray pulsars SMC X-1 and LMC X-4 made with ASCA. The phase averaged energy spectra definitely show the presence of a soft excess in both the sources. If the soft excess is modeled as a separate black-body or thermal bremsstrahlung type component, pulse phase resolved spectroscopy of SMC X-1 shows that the soft component also has a pulsating nature. Same may be true for LMC X-4, though a very small pulse fraction limits the statistical significa…
This work investigates the possible supernova kick velocities imposed on HMXB systems in the Small Magellanic Cloud. Comparisons are made between the location of such systems and the locations of young, stellar clusters on the premise that these may represent the birthplace of many of these systems. Measurements of the separation of clusters and HMXBs,and an estimate of the typical lifetimes of these systems, leads to a minimum average space velocity 30 km/s. This value is compared to theoretical estimates.
We calculate NLTE line-driven wind models of selected O stars in the spectral range of O4 to O9 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We compare predicted basic wind properties, i.e. the terminal velocity and the mass-loss rate with values derived from observation. We found relatively good agreement between theoretical and observed terminal velocities. On the other hand, predicted mass-loss rates and mass-loss rates derived from observation are in a good agreement only for higher mass-loss rates. Theoretical mass-loss rates lower than approximately 10^{-7} M_o/year are significantly higher than…
We present here results obtained from three BeppoSAX observations of the accretion-powered X-ray pulsar SMC X-1 carried out during the declining phases of its 40--60 days long super-orbital period. Timing analysis of the data clearly shows a continuing spin-up of the neutron star. Energy-resolved timing analysis shows that the pulse-profile of SMC X-1 is single peaked at energies less than 1.0 keV whereas an additional peak, the amplitude of which increases with energy within the MECS range, is present at higher energies. Broad-band pulse-phase-averaged spectroscopy of the BeppoSAX data, which…
We present new accurate CCD uvby light curves for the LMC eclipsing binaries HV982 and HV12578, and for the SMC systems HV1433 and HV11284 obtained at the Danish 1.5m telescope at ESO, La Silla. The light curves were derived from DoPHOT photometry, and typical accuracies are between 0.007 and 0.012 mag per point. Standard uvby indices have also been established for each binary, primarily for determination of interstellar reddening and absorption. For HV982 and HV12578, accurate photometric elements have been established. Both systems consist of two detached components of comparable sizes in an…
We study stellar wind properties of selected late O stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We calculate NLTE line-driven wind models for these stars and compare predicted wind parameters with observed values. We found satisfactory agreement between theoretical and observed terminal velocities. On the other hand, predicted and observed mass-loss rates are in a good agreement only for higher mass-loss rates. For mass-loss rates lower than approximately 10^{-7} M_sun / year we found large discrepancy between theoretical and observed values. We propose a new explanation of this effect based on…
(Abridged) We have investigated the reliability of the widely used I-band Tip of the RGB relative distances for a sample of Local Group galaxies with complex Star Formation Histories (SFR) and Age Metallicity Relationships (AMR) namely the LMC, SMC and LGS3. The use of the K-band is also discussed. By employing theoretical stellar population synthesis techniques, we find that using actual determinations of SFR and AMR of the LMC and SMC, their RGB is populated by stars much younger (by 9 Gyr) than the Galactic globular cluster counterparts, on which the I-band (and K-band) TRGB absolute magnit…
We present pulse-phase X-ray spectroscopy of the high-mass X-ray pulsar SMC X-1 from five different epochs, using Chandra X-ray Observatory ACIS-S and XMM-Newton EPIC-pn data. The X-ray spectrum consistently shows two distinct components, a hard power law and a soft blackbody with kT_BB ~ 0.18 keV. For all five epochs the hard component shows a simple double-peaked pulse shape, and also a variation in the power law slope, which becomes harder at maximum flux and softer at minimum flux. For the soft component, the pulse profile changes between epochs, in both shape and phase relative to the pow…
We have studied the optical spectra of a sample of 31 O- and early B-type stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud, 21 of which are associated with the young massive cluster NGC 346. Stellar parameters are determined using an automated fitting method. Comparison with predictions of stellar evolution that account for stellar rotation does not result in a unique age, though most stars are best represented by an age of 1-3 Myr. The present day v_sini distribution of the 21 dwarf stars in our sample is consistent with an underlying rotational velocity (v_r) distribution that can be characterised by a m…
We trace the star formation regions in the SMC and study their properties. The size and spatial distribution of these regions is found to support the hierarchical scenario of star formation, whereas, the evaluation of their intensity, contributes to the understanding of the various stages of star formation. Their connection to the LMC-SMC close encounter, about $(0.9-2) \times 10^{8}$ years ago, is investigated as well. The SMC, being almost edge-on, does not easily reveal these areas, as is the case with the LMC. However, a study through multi-wavelength images such as optical, IR and radio h…
We present the results of non-linear pulsation modeling of bump Cepheids in the LMC and SMC. By obtaining an optimal fit to the observed MACHO V and R lightcurves we can determine the fundamental parameters of each Cepheid, namely mass, luminosity, effective temperature, distance modulus and reddening. We are able to describe the mass-luminosity relation for core-He burning intermediate mass stars. The mass-luminosity relation depends critically upon the level of internal mixing during the course of the star's main-sequence evolution. Under the paradigm of convective core overshoot, our result…
We utilize nonlinear pulsation models to reproduce the observed light and color curves for two samples of bump Cepheid variables, 19 from the Large Magellanic Cloud and 9 from the Small Magellanic Cloud. This analysis determines the fundamental parameters mass, luminosity, effective temperature, metallicity, distance and reddening for the sample of stars. The use of light curve shape alone to determine metallicity is a new modelling technique introduced here. The metallicity, distance and reddening distributions for the two samples are in agreement with those of similar stellar populations in …
Five years of EROS data towards the Small Magellanic Cloud have been searched for gravitational microlensing events, using a new, more accurate method to assess the impact of stellar blending on the efficiency. Four long-duration candidates have been found which, if they are microlensing events, hint at a non-halo population of lenses. Combined with results from other EROS observation programs, this analysis yields strong limits on the amount of Galactic dark matter made of compact objects. Less than 25% of a standard halo can be composed of objects with a mass between 2 10^-7 Msol and 1 Msol …
In the third part of our photometric study of the star-forming region NGC 346/N~66 and its surrounding field in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), we focus on the large number of low-mass pre-main sequence (PMS) stars revealed by the Hubble Space Telescope Observations with the Advanced Camera for Surveys. We investigate the origin of the observed broadening of the pre-main sequence population in the $V-I$, $V$ CMD. The most likely explanations are either the presence of differential reddening or an age spread among the young stars. Assuming the latter, simulations indicate that we cannot exclu…
We investigate the present distributions of gas and young stars in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC) based on fully self-consistent numerical simulations of the Clouds for the last ~ 0.8 Gyr. Our principal results, which can be tested against observations, are as follows. The last dynamical and hydrodynamical interaction between the Clouds about ~ 0.2 Gyr ago can form the apparently off-center bar and peculiar HI spirals of the LMC. The present spatial distributions of young stars with ages less than 20 Myr in the LMC can be significantly asymmetric and clumpy owing to the in…
We present ground-based B and R-band color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), reaching the oldest main-sequence turnoffs with good photometric accuracy for twelve fields in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). Our fields, located between ~1 and ~4 degrees from the center of the galaxy, are situated in different parts of the SMC such as the "Wing'' area, and towards the West and South. In this paper we perform a first analysis of the stellar content in our SMC fields through comparison with theoretical isochrones and color functions (CFs). We find that the underlying spheroidally distributed population is…
We present Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) broad band imagery and optical slitless spectroscopy of three young star clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). MA 1796 and MG 2 were previously known as Planetary Nebulae, and observed as such within our Hubble Space Telescope (HST) survey. With the HST spatial resolution, we show that they are instead H II regions, surrounding very young star clusters. A third compact H II region, MA 1797, was serendipitously observed by us as it falls in the same frame of MA 1796. Limited nebular analysis is presented as derived from the slitless…
The autocorrelation function provides an objective test for the existence of special scales in the hierarchical clustering of young stars. We apply this measure to single-star photometry for the brightest main sequence stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), M33, and M31, using data from the Magellanic Clouds Photometric Survey and the Massey Local Group Survey. Our primary result is the identification of a transition to a higher correlation dimension (weaker clustering) at one kpc in the LMC and M31, and at 300 pc in M33. We suggest that this transition ma…
As a follow up to our recent study of a large sample of LMC clusters (astro-ph/0209031), we have conducted a similar study of the structures of ten SMC clusters, using archival Hubble Space Telescope snapshot data. We present surface brightness profiles for each cluster, and derive structural parameters, including core radii and luminosity and mass estimates, using exactly the same procedure as for the LMC sample. Because of the small sample size, the SMC results are not as detailed as for the larger LMC sample. We do not observe any post core-collapse clusters (although we did not expect to),…
We compare the distribution of stars of different spectral types, and hence mean age, within the central SMC and find that the asymmetric structures are almost exclusively composed of young main sequence stars. Because of the relative lack of older stars in these features, and the extremely regular distribution of red giant and clump stars in the SMC central body, we conclude that tides alone are not responsible for the irregular appearance of the central SMC. The dominant physical mechanism in determining the current-day appearance of the SMC must be star formation triggered by a hydrodynamic…
Based on XMM-Newton EPIC data of four pointings towards the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), results on timing and spectral analyses of 16 known high mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) and HMXB candidates in the SMC are presented. We confirm the pulse periods of four sources which were known to show pulsations. In addition, two new X-ray pulsars are discovered: XMMU J005605.2-722200 with P_pulse = 140.1 +/- 0.3 s and RX J0057.8-7207 with P_pulse = 152.34 +/- 0.05 s. Due to the low Galactic foreground absorption, X-ray binary systems in the Magellanic Clouds are well suited for studies of the soft compon…
We use the MARCS stellar atmosphere to derive the physical properties of 36 red supergiants (RSGs) in the LMC, and 39 RSGs in the SMC using moderate-resolution optical spectrophotometry (4000-9000A) and broad-band colors (V-R, V-K). The results from the dereddened V-R colors are in good agreement with those derived from the spectrophotometry, but the dereddened V-K colors give temperatures that are 3-4% warmer for the SMC data, with the LMC and Milky Way showing a smaller but similar effect. We conclude that this discrepancy is due to the limitations of 1D models. Our newly derived effective t…
We present WFPC2 and ground-based VI photometry of NGC 121 and a nearby field in the outer SMC. For NGC 121, we measure a true distance modulus of (m-M)0 = 18.96 +/- 0.04 (distance of 61.9 +/- 1.1 kpc), age of 10.6 +/- 0.5 Gyr, metallicity of [Fe/H] = -1.03 +/- 0.06, and initial mass of 4.1 +/- 0.4 x 10^5 Msun, assuming a Salpeter IMF with lower cutoff at 0.1 Msun. In the outer SMC field, we find evidence of stars covering a wide range of ages -- from 2 Gyr old to at least 9-12 Gyr old. We have measured the distance, extinction, and star formation history (past star formation rates and enrichm…
We investigate the chemical evolution of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) based on abundance data of planetary nebulae (PNe). The main goal is to investigate the time evolution of the oxygen abundance in this galaxy by deriving an age-metallicity relation. Such a relation is of fundamental importance as an observational constraint of chemical evolution models of the SMC. We have used high quality PNe data in order to derive the properties of the progenitor stars, so that the stellar ages could be estimated. We collected a large number of measured spectral fluxes for each nebula, and derived ac…
To investigate the nature of starbursts' dust, we constructed a model of the stars and dust in starburst galaxies and applied it to 30 observed starburst spectral energy distributions (SEDs). The starburst model was constructed by combining two stellar evolutionary synthesis models with a model describing the radiative transfer of stellar photons through dust. The stellar evolutionary synthesis models were used to compute the dust-free SEDs for stellar populations with ages between 1x10^6 and 15x10^9 years. Using a Monte Carlo radiative transfer model, the effects of dust were computed for ave…
We present 100 multiple cluster candidates selected from the OGLE catalog of star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Statistical analysis shows that the significant fraction of these objects may constitute physical systems. Coeval ages of 102 components of multiple objects suggest their common origin. 53 components have very different ages. The comparison of the population of multiple clusters candidates from the SMC and the LMC shows that: a) distributions of sizes and ages of multiple and single clusters from the Magellanic Clouds are very similar, b) the difference of sizes of componen…
We have used the latest HI observations of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), obtained with the Australia Telescope Compact Array and the Parkes telescope, to re-examine the kinematics of this dwarf, irregular galaxy. A large velocity gradient is found in the HI velocity field with a significant symmetry in iso-velocity contours, suggestive of a differential rotation. A comparison of HI data with the predictions from tidal models for the SMC evolution suggests that the central region of the SMC corresponds to the central, disk- or bar-like, component left from the rotationally supported SMC dis…
We study population of compact X-ray sources in the Small Magellanic Cloud using the archival data of XMM-Newton observatory. The total area of the survey is ~1.5 square degrees with the limiting sensitivity of ~10^{-14} erg/s/cm^2, corresponding to the luminosity of ~4.3\cdot 10^{33} erg/s at the SMC distance. Out of ~150 point sources detected in the 2--8 keV energy band, ~3/4 are background CXB sources, observed through the SMC. Based on the properties of the optical and near-infrared counterparts of the detected sources we identified likely HMXB candidates, and sources, whose nature is unc…
We investigate the formation of a number of key large-scale HI features in the ISM of the Magellanic Bridge using dissipationless numerical simulation techniques. This study comprises the first direct comparison between detailed HI maps of the Bridge and numerical simulations. We confirm that the SMC forms two tidal filaments: a near arm, which forms the connection between the SMC and LMC, and a counterarm. We show that the HI of the most dense part of the Bridge can become arranged into a bimodal configuration, and that the formation of a "loop" of HI, located off the North-Eastern edge of th…
Optical observations from 1989 of the SMC B[e] supergiant star S23 revealed the presence of photospheric HeI absorption lines. In our high-resolution optical spectra from 2000, however, we could not identify any HeI line. The observed changes in spectral behaviour of S23 lead to different spectral classifications at different observing epochs. The aim of this research is, therefore, to find and discuss possible scenarios that might cause a disappearance of the photospheric HeI absorption lines within a period of only 11 years. From our high-resolution optical spectra, we perform a detailed inv…
