We describe the spectral classification of white dwarfs and some of the physical processes important for their understanding. In the major part of this paper we discuss the input physics and computational methods for one of the most widely used stellar atmosphere codes for white dwarfs.
In the light of the recent and unexpected discovery of a brand new type of white dwarfs, those with carbon-dominated atmospheres, we examine the asteroseismological potential of such stars. The motivation behind this is based on the observation that past models of carbon-atmosphere white dwarfs have partially ionized outer layers that bear strong resemblance with those responsible for mode excitation in models of pulsating DB (helium-atmosphere) and pulsating DA (hydrogen-atmosphere) white dwarfs. Our exciting main result is that, given the right location in parameter space, some carbon-atmosp…
I review detached binaries consisting of white dwarfs with either other white dwarfs or low mass main-sequence stars in tight orbits around them. Orbital periods have been measured for 15 white dwarf/white dwarf systems and 22 white dwarf/M dwarf systems. While small compared to the number of periods known for CVs (>300), I argue that each variety of detached system has a space density an order of magnitude higher that of CVs. While theory matches the observed distribution of orbital periods of the white dwarf/white dwarf binaries, it predicts white dwarfs of much lower mass than observed. Amo…
The reduced proper motion diagram (RPMD) for a complete sample of faint stars with high accuracy proper motions in the North Galactic Pole field SA57 is investigated. Eight stars with very large reduced proper motions are identified as faint white dwarf candidates. We discriminate these white dwarf candidates from the several times more numerous QSOs based on proper motion and variability. We discuss the implausibility that these stars could be any kind of survey contaminant. If {\it bona fide} white dwarfs, the eight candidates found here represent a portion of the white dwarf population hith…
By analogy to Jovian radio emissions powered by the electromagnetic interaction between Jupiter and its moons, we propose that close magnetic-nonmagnetic white-dwarf pairs and white-dwarf planetary systems are strong radio sources. A simple model is developed to predict the flux densities of radio emission generated by a loss-cone-driven electron-cyclotron maser. The radio emission from these systems has high brightness temperatures, is highly polarized, and varies on a periodic cycle following the orbital rotation. Masers from magnetic-nonmagnetic white-dwarf pairs, with orbital periods <10 m…
Close white dwarf binaries make up a wide variety of objects such as double white dwarf binaries, which are possible SN Ia progenitors, cataclysmic variables, super soft sources, or AM CVn stars. The evolution and formation of close white dwarf binaries crucially depends on the rate at which angular momentum is extracted from the binary orbit. The two most important sources of angular momentum loss are the common envelope phase and magnetic braking. Both processes are so far poorly understood. Observational population studies of white dwarf/main sequence binaries provide the potential to signi…
We review empirical and theoretical findings concerning white dwarfs in Galactic globular clusters. Since their detection is a critical issue we describe in detail the various efforts to find white dwarfs in globular clusters. We then outline the advantages of using cluster white dwarfs to investigate the formation and evolution of white dwarfs and concentrate on evolutionary channels that appear to be unique to globular clusters. We also discuss the usefulness of globular cluster white dwarfs to provide independent information on the distances and ages of globular clusters, information that i…
An unresolved, likely L dwarf companion to the DA white dwarf GD1400 is reported. This would be only the second such system known, discovered 17 years after the prototype L dwarf, GD165B, was determined to be a companion to a white dwarf. Photometric observations and model predicted stellar parameters of the well studied white dwarf primary indicate that GD1400B has $J-K\ga2.0$ and $M_K=12.13$ mag. If correct, this would place GD1400B at spectral type L6, and it would be the lowest luminosity unevolved companion known to a white dwarf, and thus a definite brown dwarf. However, a low resolution…
Large amount of observational spectroscopic data are recently available from different observational projects, like Sloan Digital Sky Survey. It's become more urgent to identify white dwarfs stars based on data itself i.e. without modelling white dwarf atmospheres. In particular, existing methods of white dwarfs identification presented in Kleinman et al. (2004) and in Eisenstein et al. (2006) did not allow to find all the white dwarfs in examined data. We intend to test various criteria of searching for white dwarf candidates, based on photometric and spectral features.
White dwarf masses can be determined in several ways. Here we compare masses obtained from Balmer line spectroscopy with those derived from trigonometric parallax measurements for an ensemble of cool hydrogen-atmosphere white dwarfs.
The most recent version of the Catalog of Spectroscopically Identified White Dwarfs lists 2249 white dwarf stars. Among these stars are 118 white dwarfs that have either reliable trigonometric parallaxes or color-based distance moduli which place them at a distance within 20 pc of the Sun. Most of these nearby white dwarfs are isolated stars, but 35 (30 % of the sample) are in binary systems, including such well known systems as Sirius A/B, and Procyon A/B. There are also three double degenerate systems in this sample of the local white dwarf population. The sample of local white dwarfs is lar…
We investigate the use of a narrow-band DDO51 filter for photometric identification of cool white dwarfs. We report photometric observations of 30 known cool white dwarfs with temperatures ranging from 10,000 K down to very cool temperatures (<3500 K). Follow-up spectroscopic observations of a sample of objects selected using this filter and our photometric observations show that DDO51 filter photometry can help select cool white dwarf candidates for follow-up multi--object spectroscopy by rejecting 65% of main sequence stars with the same broad--band colors as the cool white dwarfs. This tech…
We compare four different methods to calculate radiative transfer through a magnetized stellar atmosphere, and apply them to the case of magnetic white dwarfs. All methods are numerically stable enough to allow determination of the magnetic field structure, but distinctions between faster, simplifying, methods, and elaborate, but more CPU-time consuming, methods, can be made.
A reduced proper motion diagram utilizing Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) photometry and astrometry and USNO-B plate astrometry is used to separate cool white dwarf candidates from metal-weak, high-velocity main sequence Population II stars (subdwarfs) in the SDSS Data Release 2 imaging area. Follow-up spectroscopy using the Hobby-Eberly Telescope, the MMT, and the McDonald 2.7m Telescope is used to demonstrate that the white dwarf and subdwarf loci separate cleanly in the reduced proper motion diagram, and that the contamination by subdwarfs is small near the cool white dwarf locus. This enab…
We report first results of our systematic investigation of the magnetic field structure of rotating single magnetic white dwarfs and of white dwarfs in magnetic cataclysmic variables. The global magnetic field distributions on the isolated white dwarf HE1045-0908 and the accreting white dwarfs in EF Eri and CP Tuc have been derived from phase-resolved flux and polarization spectra obtained with FORS1 at the ESO VLT using the systematic method of Zeeman tomography.
We have obtained low-dispersion IUE spectra of the stars 56 Persei (F4 V) and HR 3643 (F7 II), as part of a survey of late-type stars with a 1565 A flux excess in the TD-1 ultraviolet sky survey. The IUE spectrum of each star reveals the presence of a hot white dwarf companion. We fit the Ly alpha profile and ultraviolet continuum using pure hydrogen models, but the distance of the primary star is also needed to uniquely constrain the white dwarf parameters. We derive Teff = 16,420 +- 420 K, logg = 8.46 +- 0.2 for the white dwarf companion to 56 Per, using the photometric distance of 30.1 +- 2…
We discuss the importance of pure hydrogen white dwarf atmosphere models with Ly-$\rm α$ far red wing opacity in the analysis of the white dwarf cooling sequence of the globular cluster NGC 6397. Our recently improved atmosphere models account for the previously missing opacity from the Ly-$\rm α$ hydrogen line broadened by collisions of the absorbing hydrogen atoms with molecular and atomic hydrogen. These models are the first that well reproduce the UV colors and spectral energy distributions of cool white dwarfs with $T_{\rm eff}<6000 \rm K$ observed in the Galactic Disk. Fitting the observ…
Using an Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) spectrum, we confirm the identification of a white dwarf companion to the B9.5V star 16 Dra (HD150100), and constrain its surface temperature to lie between 29,000K and 35,000K. This is the third B star + white dwarf non-interacting Sirius-type binary to be confirmed, after y Pup (HR2875, HD59635) and theta Hya (HR3665, HD79469). 16 Dra and its white dwarf companion are members of a larger resolved proper motion system including the B9V star 17 Dra A (HD150117). The white dwarf must have evolved from a progenitor more massive than this star, i.e. ~3…
Microlensing events observed in the line of sight toward the LMC indicate that a significant fraction of the mass of the dark halo of the Galaxy is probably composed of white dwarfs. In addition, white dwarf sequences have now be observed in the HR diagrams of several globular clusters. Because of the unavailability of white dwarf atmospheres for Teff < 4000K, cooling time scales for white dwarfs older than ~ 10 Gyr are very uncertain. Moreover, the identification of a MACHO white dwarf population by direct observation depends on a knowledge of the colors and bolometric corrections of very-coo…
The New Luyten Two-Tenths catalog contains a large number of high-proper motion white dwarf candidates that remain to be spectroscopically confirmed. We present new spectroscopic observations as well as SDSS archival spectra of 49 white dwarf candidates which have been selected from the revised NLTT catalog of Salim & Gould 2003. Out of these, 34 are cool DA white dwarfs with temperatures ranging from approximately 5000 K up to 11690 K, and 11 are DC white dwarfs with temperatures ranging from 4300 K (NLTT 18555) up to 11000 K. Three of the DA white dwarfs also display abundances of heavy elem…
Here, we present near-infrared spectroscopic observations of 15 helium atmosphere, metal-rich white dwarfs obtained at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility. While a connection has been demonstrated between the most highly polluted, hydrogen atmosphere white dwarfs and the presence of warm circumstellar dust and gas, their frequency at the helium atmosphere variety is poorly constrained. None of our targets show excess near-infrared radiation consistent with warm orbiting material. Adding these near-infrared constraints to previous near- and mid-infrared observations, the frequency of warm circ…
The discovery of a low luminosity common proper motion companion to the white dwarf GD392 at a wide separation of $46''$ is reported. $BVRI$ photometry suggests a low temperature ($T_{\rm eff}\sim4000$ K) while $JHK$ data strongly indicate suppressed flux at all near infrared wavelengths. Thus, GD392B is one of the few white dwarfs to show significant collision induced absorption due to the presence of photospheric ${\rm {H_2}}$ and the first ultracool white dwarf detected as a companion to another star. Models fail to explain GD392B as a normal mass white dwarf. If correct, the cool companion…
We calculate the effect of illumination of dwarf nova accretion discs by radiation from a hot, central, white dwarf. We show that only for very hot white dwarfs (Teff ~ 40 000$ K) the inner region of quiescent dwarf nova discs are partially depleted so that the delay between the rise to outburst of the optical and UV fluxes would be increased as suggested recently by King (1997). This depletion, however, must create several small outbursts between main outbursts, contrary to observations. Lower white dwarf temperatures may cause the outburts to be of the `inside-out' type removing the UV delay…
Fluxes are measured for the DA white dwarf plus brown dwarf pair GD 1400 with the Infrared Array Camera on the {\em Spitzer Space Telescope}. GD 1400 displays an infrared excess over the entire $3-8μ$m region consistent with the presence of a mid- to late-type L dwarf companion. A discussion is given regarding current knowledge of this unique system.
We report our search for the cool white dwarfs belonging to the Galactic disk by extending the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey. Narrow-band DDO51 photometry of the Deep Wide-Field Survey's northern field was obtained using the 4m-Mayall Telescope and the MOSAIC imager to separate cool white dwarfs from other stellar types of similar T_eff. Follow-up spectroscopy of four white dwarf candidates from our photometric search resulted in the discovery of two new cool white dwarfs as companions to M dwarfs.
The magnetic fields of white dwarfs distort their shape generating an anisotropic moment of inertia. A magnetized white dwarf which rotates obliquely relative to the symmetry axis has a mass quadrupole moment which varies in time, so it will emit gravitational radiation. LISA may be able to detect the gravitational waves from two nearby, quickly rotating white dwarfs.
We present the first spectra obtained with the Very Large Telescope for white dwarfs in a globular cluster. Estimates of atmospheric parameters are obtained and compared to evolutionary tracks. We discuss possible implications for the distance scale of globular clusters and white dwarf evolution and demonstrate how white dwarfs might be used to establish an independent distance scale to globular clusters.
The atmospheres of cool, helium-rich white dwarfs constitute an exotic and poorly explored physical regime of stellar atmospheres. Under physical conditions where the temperature varies from $\rm 1000K$ to $\rm 10000K$, the density can reach values as large as $\rm 2 g/cm^{3}$, and the pressure is as high as $\rm 1 Mbar$, the atmosphere is no longer an ideal gas and must be treated as a dense fluid. Helium atoms become strongly correlated and refraction effects are present. Opacity sources such as $\rm He^{-}$ free-free absorption must be calculated with a formalism that has never been applied…
We present spectroscopic observations of the remaining four candidate white dwarfs in Praesepe. All four candidates are quasars with redshifts between 0.8 and 2.8. One quasar, LB 6072, is observed to have a strong metal-line absorption system blueward of the quasar redshift. The lack of additional white dwarfs in Praesepe leaves the total known white-dwarf population of the cluster at five, well below the number expected from commonly-assumed initial mass functions, though several undiscovered cluster WDs may lie in the outer regions of the cluster. All known Praesepe member white dwarfs are c…
We discuss the recent discovery by Oppenheimer et al (2001) of old, cool white dwarf stars, which may be the first direct detection of Galactic halo dark matter. We argue here that the contribution of more mundane white dwarfs of the stellar halo and thick disk would contribute sufficiently to explain the new high velocity white dwarfs without invoking putative white dwarfs of the dark halo. This by no means rules out that the dark matter has been found, but it does constrain the overall contribution by white dwarfs brighter than M_V ~ 16 to significantly less than 1% of the Galactic dark matt…
The infrared search for substellar companions to nearby white dwarfs has been going for a little more than a decade. The most recent phase has been a wide field proper motion search carried out primarily at Steward Observatory, where we are complete down to J=18. Earlier phases included near field searches at the IRTF and Keck Observatory. In the last year we have discovered ten previously unrecognized faint proper motion companions. Of the recent discoveries, most are white dwarfs and a few M dwarfs. GD165B, discovered in 1988 as part of our program, is still the only known companion to a whi…
This paper presents a sensitive and comprehensive IRAC 3-8 $μ$m photometric survey of white dwarfs for companions in the planetary mass regime with temperatures cooler than the known T dwarfs. The search focuses on descendents of intermediate mass stars with $M\ga3$ $M_{\odot}$ whose inner, few hundred AU regions cannot be probed effectively for massive planets and brown dwarfs by any alternative existing method. Furthermore, examination for mid-infrared excess explores an extensive range of orbital semimajor axes, including the intermediate 5-50 AU range poorly covered and incompletely access…
We examine the recent results of the MACHO collaboration towards the Large Magellanic Cloud (Alcock et al. 1996) in terms of a halo brown dwarf or white dwarf population. The possibility for most of the microlensing events to be due to brown dwarfs is totally excluded by large-scale kinematic properties. The white dwarf scenario is examined in details in the context of the most recent white dwarf cooling theory (Segretain et al. 1994) which includes explicitely the extra source of energy due to carbon-oxygen differentiation at crystallization, and the subsequent Debye cooling. We show that the…
The problem of detecting Jovian-sized planets orbiting White Dwarf stars is considered. Significant IR excesses result from warm Jupiters orbiting a White Dwarf of $T_{\rm eff}=10000$ K at a distance of $\sim 10^3$ White Dwarf radii (corresponding to $\sim 10^2$ Jupiter radii or a few tenths of an AU) with an orbital period of $\sim 100$ days. Such a planet will have a 10 micron flux density at its Wien peak that is comparable to the emission of the White Dwarf at that wavelength. Although the White Dwarf is much hotter than the planet, the planet will have peak brightness at the IR, well into…
We summarize recent improvements in model atmosphere and internal structure of faint white dwarfs. We derive an analytical cooling theory which illustrates the effects of various physical processes on the energy budget and the cooling history of cool white dwarfs. We consider in particular the effect of chemical fractionation at crystallization. This process, although it liberates a small amount of energy, affects significantly the cooling time of white dwarfs at their low-luminosity stages. This modifies the age of the faintest white dwarf ever observed, ESO 439-26, and bears important conseq…
There are now four dwarf novae known with white dwarf primaries that show large amplitude non-radial oscillations of the kind seen in ZZ Cet stars. We compare the properties of these stars and point out that by the end of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey more than 30 should be known.
Ultraviolet observations using the Solar Blind Channel on the Hubble Space Telescope provide light curves and low resolution spectra of three pulsating white dwarfs in the cataclysmic variables SDSS013132.39-090122.3, SDSSJ161033.64-010223.3 and SDSSJ220553.98+115553.7. The UV light curves show enhanced pulsation amplitudes over those from simultaneous and previous optical photometry, while the UV-optical spectra are fit with white dwarf temperatures near 15,000K. These temperatures place the accreting white dwarfs outside the instability zone for non-interacting DAV white dwarfs and show that…
We have discovered that the white dwarf PG 2329+267 is magnetic, and assuming a centered dipole structure, has a dipole magnetic field strength of approximately 2.3MG. This makes it one of only approximately 4% of isolated white dwarfs with a detectable magnetic field. Linear Zeeman splitting as well as quadratic Zeeman shifts are evident in the hydrogen Balmer sequence and circular spectropolarimetry reveals 10% circular polarisation in the two displaced sigma components of Halpha. We suggest from comparison with spectra of white dwarfs of known mass that PG 2329+267 is more massive than typi…
In Galactic open clusters, there is an apparent paucity of white dwarfs compared to the number expected assuming a reasonable initial mass function and that main-sequence stars with initial mass <= 8 M_sun become white dwarfs. We suggest that this lack of white dwarfs is due at least in part to dynamical processes. Non-spherically symmetric mass loss during the post-main-sequence evolution would lead to a few km/s isotropic recoil speed for the white dwarf remnant. This recoil speed can cause a substantial fraction of the white dwarfs formed in a cluster to leave the system. We investigate thi…
We investigate the importance of the far red wing of the Lyman $ α$ line of hydrogen in the atmospheres of cool white dwarfs of pure hydrogen composition. We find that this absorption process dominates all important sources of opacity in the blue part of the optical spectrum of these stars. Our successful fits to the spectra of cool DA/DC white dwarfs indicate that the far red wing of the $\rm Ly α$ line is the source of opacity that had been missing in the models. The observed sequence of cool white dwarfs in color-color diagrams is very well reproduced by our new pure hydrogen atmosphere mod…
We report the discovery, in an Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) short wavelength spectrum, of an unresolved hot white dwarf companion to the 5th-magnitude B5Vp star HR2875. This is the first time that a non-interacting white dwarf$+$ B star binary has been discovered; previously, the the earliest type star known with a white dwarf companion was Sirius (A1V). Since the white dwarf must have evolved from a main sequence progenitor with a mass greater than that of a B5V star ($\geq$6.0M$_\odot$), this places a lower limit on the maximum mass for white dwarf progenitors, with important implicat…
First results are presented for a Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys snapshot study of white dwarfs with likely red dwarf companions. Of 48 targets observed and analyzed so far, 27 are totally or partially resolved into two or more components, while an additional 15 systems are almost certainly unresolved binaries. These results provide the first direct empirical evidence for a bimodal distribution of orbital separations among binary systems containing at least one white dwarf.
We consider the problem of radiative transfer in stellar atmospheres where the index of refraction departs from unity and is a function of density and temperature. We present modified Feautrier and Lambda-iteration methods to solve the equation of radiative transfer with refraction in a plane parallel atmosphere. These methods are general and can be used in any problem with 1-D geometry where the index of refraction is a monotonically varying function of vertical optical depth. We present an application to very cool white dwarf atmospheres where the index of refraction departs significantly fr…
We have paired the Second Data Release of the Large Area Survey of the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey with the Fifth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to identify ten cool white dwarf candidates, from their photometry and astrometry. Of these ten, one was previously known to be a very cool white dwarf. We have obtained optical spectroscopy for seven of the candidates using the GMOS-N spectrograph on Gemini North, and have confirmed all seven as white dwarfs. Our photometry and astrometry indicates that the remaining two objects are also white dwarfs. Model analysis of the photometry…
We predict the existence of dusty disks and possibly CO planets around massive white dwarfs. We show that the thermal emission from these disks should be detectable in the infrared. The planets may also be detectable either by direct IR imaging, spectroscopy, or using the pulsations of the white dwarfs.
Extremely low mass white dwarfs are very rare objects likely formed in compact binary systems. We present MMT optical spectroscopy of 42 low mass white dwarf candidates serendipitously discovered in a survey for hypervelocity B-type stars. One of these objects, SDSS J0917+46, has Teff= 11,288 \pm 72 K and log g = 5.48 \pm 0.03; with an estimated mass of 0.17 M_sun, it is the lowest gravity/mass white dwarf currently known. However, 40 of the low mass candidates are normal DA white dwarfs with apparently inaccurate SDSS g magnitudes. We revisit the identification of low mass white dwarf candida…
We have conducted a survey of 61 southern white dwarfs searching for magnetic fields using Zeeman spectropolarimetry. Our objective is to obtain a magnetic field distribution for these objects and, in particular, to find white dwarfs with weak fields. We found one possible candidate (WD 0310-688) that may have a weak magnetic field of -6.1+/-2.2 kG. Next, we determine the fraction and distribution of magnetic white dwarfs in the Solar neighborhood, and investigate the probability of finding more of these objects based on the current incidence of magnetism in white dwarfs within 20 pc of the Su…
Carbon monoxide and ammonia have been detected in the spectrum of Gl 229B at abundances that differ substantially from those obtained from chemical equilibrium. Vertical mixing in the atmosphere is a mechanism that can drive slowly reacting species out of chemical equilibrium. We explore the effects of vertical mixing as a function of mixing efficiency and effective temperature on the chemical abundances in the atmospheres of brown dwarfs and on their spectra. The models compare favorably with the observational evidence and indicate that vertical mixing plays an important role in brown dwarf a…
We report new infrared spectroscopic observations of cool DQ white dwarfs by using Coolspec on the 2.7m Harlan-Smith Telescope. DQs have helium-rich atmospheres with traces of molecular carbon thought to be the result of convective dredge-up from their C/O interiors. Recent model calculations predict that oxygen should also be present in DQ atmospheres in detectable amounts. Our synthetic spectra calculations for He-rich white dwarfs with traces of C and O indicate that CO should be easily detected in the cool DQ atmospheres if present in the expected amounts. Determination of the oxygen abund…
Using a new grid of models of cooling white dwarfs, we calculate isochrones and luminosity functions in the Johnson-Kron/Cousins and HST filter sets for systems containing old white dwarfs. These new models incorporate a non-grey atmosphere which is necessary to properly describe the effects of molecular opacity at the cool temperatures of old white dwarfs. The various functions calculated and extensively tabulated and plotted are meant to be as utilitarian as possible for observers so all results are listed in quantities that observers will obtain. The tables and plots developed should eventu…
An entirely new model for the structure as well as for the cooling mechanism of white dwarfs has been proposed. We have argued that the massive part of the constituents of white dwarfs- the positively charged ions are boson and under the extreme physical condition (density and temperature) at the interior, it is possible to have condensation of charged bose gas. We have tried to establish that a cold white dwarf is a self gravitating charged bose condensed system.
Clouds and hazes are important throughout our solar system and in the atmospheres of brown dwarfs and extrasolar giant planets. Among the brown dwarfs, clouds control the colors and spectra of the L-dwarfs; the disappearance of clouds helps herald the arrival of the T-dwarfs. The structure and composition of clouds will be among the first remote-sensing results from the direct detection of extrasolar giant planets.
We use the results of realistic N-body simulations to investigate the appearance of the white dwarf population in dense star clusters. We show that the presence of a substantial binary population in a star cluster, and the interaction of this population with the cluster environment, has serious consequences for the morphology of the observed white dwarf sequence and the derived white dwarf cooling age of the cluster. We find that over time the dynamical evolution of the cluster -- mass-segregation, stellar interactions and tidal stripping -- hampers the use of white dwarfs as tracers of the in…
We discuss the effects of rotation on the evolution of accreting carbon-oxygen white dwarfs, with the emphasis on possible consequences in Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) progenitors. Starting with a slowly rotating white dwarf, we simulate the accretion of matter and angular momentum from a quasi-Keplerian accretion disk. The role of the various rotationally induced hydrodynamic instabilities for the transport of angular momentum inside the white dwarf is investigated. We find that the dynamical shear instability is the most important one in the highly degenerate core. Our results imply that accret…
Current estimates for white dwarfs with fields in excess of 1MG are about 10%; according to our first high-precision circular-polarimetric study of 12 bright white dwarfs with the VLT (Aznar Cuadrado et al. 2004) this number increases up to about 25% in the kG regime. With our new sample of 10 white dwarf observations (plus one sdO star) we wanted to improve the sample statistics to determine the incident of kG magnetic fields in white dwarfs. In one of our objects (LTT7987) we detected a statistically significant (97% confidence level) longitudinal magnetic field varying between (-1+-0.5)kG a…
The interpretation of the old, cool white dwarfs recently found by Oppenheimer et al. (2001) is still controversial. Whereas these authors claim that they have finally found the elusive ancient halo white dwarf population that contributes significantly to the mass budget of the galactic halo, there have been several other contributions that argue that these white dwarfs are not genuine halo members but, instead, thick disk stars. We show here that the interpretation of this sample is based on the adopted distances, which are obtained from a color--magnitude calibration, and we demonstrate that…
Thermonuclear (type Ia) supernovae are explosions in accreting white dwarfs, but the exact scenario leading to these explosions is still unclear. An important step to clarify this point is to understand the behaviour of accreting white dwarfs in close binary systems. The characteristics of the white dwarf (mass, chemical composition, luminosity), the accreted material (chemical composition) and those related with the properties of the binary system (mass accretion rate), are crucial for the further evolution towards the explosion. An analysis of the outcome of accretion and the implications fo…
We present a detailed calculation of model atmospheres for DA white dwarfs. Our atmosphere code solves the atmosphere structure in local thermodynamic equilibrium with a standard partial linearization technique, which takes into account the energy transfer by radiation and convection. This code incorporates recent improved and extended data base of collision induced absorption by molecular hydrogen. We analyse the thermodynamic structure and emergent flux of atmospheres in a range 2500 < Teff < 60000$ K and 6.5 < log g < 9.0. Bolometric correction and colour indices are provided for a subsampl…
This paper presents results of a near-infrared imaging survey for low mass stellar and substellar companions to white dwarfs. A wide field proper motion survey of 261 white dwarfs was capable of directly detecting companions at orbital separations between $\sim100$ and 5000 AU with masses as low as 0.05 $M_{\odot}$, while a deep near field search of 86 white dwarfs was capable of directly detecting companions at separations between $\sim50$ and 1100 AU with masses as low as 0.02 $M_{\odot}$. Additionally, all white dwarf targets were examined for near-infrared excess emission, a technique capa…
A popular interpretation of recent microlensing studies of the line of sight towards the Large Magellanic Cloud invokes a population of old white dwarf stars in the Galactic halo. Below I review the basic properties of old white dwarf stars and the ongoing efforts to detect this population directly.
