In this paper we derive an effective master equation and quantum trajectory equation for multiple qubits in a single resonator and in the large resonator decay limit. We show that homodyne measurement of the resonator transmission is a weak measurement of the collective qubit inversion. As an example of this result, we focus on the case of two qubits and show how this measurement can be used to generate an entangled state from an initially separable state. This is realized without relying on an entangling Hamiltonian. We show that, for {\em current} experimental values of both the decoherence and measurement rates, this approach can be used to generate highly entangled states. This scheme takes advantage of the fact that one of the Bell states is decoherence-free under Purcell decay.
We propose a scheme to realize controllable quantum state transfer and entanglement generation among transmon qubits in the typical circuit QED setup based on adiabatic passage. Through designing the time-dependent driven pulses applied on the transmon qubits, we find that fast quantum sate transfer can be achieved between arbitrary two qubits and quantum entanglement among the qubits also can also be engineered. Furthermore, we numerically analyzed the influence of the decoherence on our scheme with the current experimental accessible systematical parameters. The result shows that our scheme …
The main part of this Thesis is devoted to the dynamics of entanglement in matter-radiation interaction and circuit QED systems, and its relationship with the notion of causality. Results on non-RWA effects in circuit QED and quantum simulations of relativistic dynamics are also included.
We present a theoretical study of a superconducting charge qubit dispersively coupled to a transmission line resonator. Starting from a master equation description of this coupled system and using a polaron transformation, we obtain an exact effective master equation for the qubit. We then use quantum trajectory theory to investigate the measurement of the qubit by continuous homodyne measurement of the resonator out-field. Using the same porlaron transformation, a stochastic master equation for the conditional state of the qubit is obtained. From this result, various definitions of the measur…
We present an indirect two-qubit parity meter in planar circuit quantum electrodynamics, realized by discrete interaction with an ancilla and a subsequent projective ancilla measurement with a dedicated, dispersively coupled resonator. Quantum process tomography and successful entanglement by measurement demonstrate that the meter is intrinsically quantum non-demolition. Separate interaction and measurement steps allow commencing subsequent data qubit operations in parallel with ancilla measurement, offering time savings over continuous schemes.
A qubit may undergo Landau-Zener transitions due to its coupling to one or several quantum harmonic oscillators. We show that for a qubit coupled to one oscillator, Landau-Zener transitions can be used for single-photon generation and for the controllable creation of qubit-oscillator entanglement, with state-of-the-art circuit QED as a promising realization. Moreover, for a qubit coupled to two cavities, we show that Landau-Zener sweeps of the qubit are well suited for the robust creation of entangled cavity states, in particular symmetric Bell states, with the qubit acting as the entanglement…
We propose a protocol for creating entanglement within a dissipative circuit QED network architecture that consists of two electromagnetic circuits (cavities) and two superconducting qubits. The system interacts with a quantum environment, giving rise to decoherence and dissipation. We discuss the preparation of two separate entangled cavity-qubit states via Landau-Zener sweeps, after which the cavities interact via a tunable "quantum switch" which is realized with an ancilla qubit. Moreover, we discuss the decay of the resulting entangled two-cavity state due to the influence of the environme…
We investigate the generation of multipartite entangled state in a system of N quantum dots embedded in a microcavity and examine the emergence of genuine multipartite entanglement by three different characterizations of entanglement. At certain times of dynamical evolution one can generate multipartite entangled coherent exciton states or multiqubit $W$ states by initially preparing the cavity field in a superposition of coherent states or the Fock state with one photon, respectively. Finally we study environmental effects on multipartite entanglement generation and find that the decay rate f…
We study a qubit undergoing Landau-Zener transitions enabled by the coupling to a circuit-QED mode. Summing an infinite-order perturbation series, we determine the exact nonadiabatic transition probability for the qubit, being independent of the frequency of the QED mode. Possible applications are single-photon generation and the controllable creation of qubit-oscillator entanglement.
We present a theoretical study of a hybrid circuit-QED system composed of two semiconducting charge-qubits confined in a microwave resonator. The qubits are defined in terms of the charge states of two spatially separated double quantum dots (DQDs) which are coupled to the same photon mode in the microwave resonator. We analyze a transport setup where each DQD is attached to electronic reservoirs and biased out-of-equilibrium by a large voltage, and study how electron transport across each DQD is modified by the coupling to the common resonator. In particular, we show that the inelastic curren…
We propose a simple circuit quantum electrodynamics (QED) experiment to test the generation of entanglement between two superconducting qubits. Instead of the usual cavity QED picture, we study qubits which are coupled to an open transmission line and get entangled by the exchange of propagating photons. We compute their dynamics using a full quantum field theory beyond the rotating-wave approximation and explore a variety of regimes which go from a weak coupling to the recently introduced ultrastrong coupling regime. Due to the existence of single photons traveling along the line with finite …
Superconducting electrical circuits can be used to study the physics of cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) in new regimes, therefore realizing circuit QED. For quantum information processing and quantum optics, an interesting regime of circuit QED is the dispersive regime, where the detuning between the qubit transition frequency and the resonator frequency is much larger than the interaction strength. In this paper, we investigate how non-linear corrections to the dispersive regime affect the measurement process. We find that in the presence of pure qubit dephasing, photon population of the…
We have studied the low-lying excitations of a chain of coupled circuit-QED systems, and report several intriguing properties of its two nearly degenerate ground states. The ground states are Schrödinger cat states at a truly large scale, involving maximal entanglement between the resonator and the qubit, and are mathematically equivalent to Majorana bound states. With a suitable design of physical qubits, they are protected against local fluctuations and constitute a non-local qubit. Further, they can be probed and manipulated coherently by attaching an empty resonator to one end of the circu…
A polarization degenerate microcavity containing charge-controlled quantum dots (QDs) enables equal coupling of all polarization degrees of freedom of light to the cavity QED system, which we explore through resonant laser spectroscopy. We first measure interference of the two fine-split neutral QD transitions and find very good agreement of this V-type three-level system with a coherent polarization dependent cavity QED model. We also study a charged QD that suffers from decoherence, and find also in this case that availability of the full polarization degrees of freedom is crucial to reveal …
Entangled multi-qubit states may be generated through a dispersive collective QND measurement of superconducting qubits coupled to a microwave transmission line resonator. Using the quantum trajectory approach, we analyze the stochastic measurement traces that would be observed in experiments. We illustrate the synthesis of three-qubit W- and GHZ-states, and we analyze how the fidelity and the entanglement evolve in time during the measurement. We discuss the influence of decoherence and relaxation, as well as of imperfect control over experimental parameters. We show that the desired states c…

Coherent exchange between photons and different matter excitations (like qubits, acoustic surface waves or spins) allows for the entanglement of light and matter and provides a toolbox for performing fundamental quantum physics. On top of that, coherent exchange is a basic ingredient in the majority of quantum information processors. In this work, we develop the theory for coupling between magnetic textures (vortices and skyrmions) stabilized in ferromagnetic nanodiscs and photons generated in a circuit. In particular, we show how to perform broadband spectroscopy of the magnetic textures by s…
Achieving quantum correlations between two distant systems is a desirable feature for quantum networking. In this work, we study a system composed of two quantum emitter-cavity subsystems spatially separated. A mechanical resonator couples to either both quantum emitters or both cavities leading to quantum correlations between both subsystems such as non-local light-matter dressed states and cavity-cavity normal mode splitting. These indirect couplings can be explained by an effective Hamiltonian for large energy detuning between the mechanical resonator and the atoms/cavities. Moreover, it is…
We propose a realistic circuit QED experiment to test the extraction of past-future vacuum entanglement to a pair of superconducting qubits. The qubit P interacts with the quantum field along an open transmission line for an interval T_on and then, after a time-lapse T_off, the qubit F starts interacting for a time T_on in a symmetric fashion. After that, past-future quantum correlations will have transferred to the qubits, even if the qubits do not coexist at the same time. We show that this experiment can be realized with current technology and discuss its utility as a possible implementatio…
We describe a quantum computational architecture based on integrating nanomechanical resonators with Josephson junction phase qubits, with which we implement single- and multi-qubit operations. The nanomechanical resonator is a GHz-frequency, high-quality-factor dilatational resonator, coupled to the Josephson phase through a piezoelectric interaction. This system is analogous to one or more few-level atoms (the Josephson qubits) in a tunable electromagnetic cavity (the nanomechanical resonator). Our architecture combines the best features of solid-state and cavity-QED approaches, and may make…
We propose methods for the preparation and entanglement detection of multi-qubit GHZ states in circuit quantum electrodynamics. Using quantum trajectory simulations appropriate for the situation of a weak continuous measurement, we show that the joint dispersive readout of several qubits can be utilized for the probabilistic production of high-fidelity GHZ states. When employing a nonlinear filter on the recorded homodyne signal, the selected states are found to exhibit values of the Bell-Mermin operator exceeding 2 under realistic conditions. We discuss the potential of the dispersive readout…
We study entanglement dynamics in a system consisting of a qubit dispersively coupled to a finite-temperature, dissipative, driven oscillator. We show that there are two generic ways to generate entanglement: one can entangle the qubit either with the phase or the amplitude of the oscillator's motion. Using an exact solution of the relevant quantum master equation, we study the robustness of both these kinds of entanglement against the effects of dissipation and temperature; in the limit of zero temperature (but finite damping), a simple analytic expression is derived for the logarithmic negat…
We propose and study the use of photon-mediated interactions for the generation of long-range steady-state entanglement between N atoms. Through the judicious use of coherent drives and the placement of the atoms in a network of Cavity QED systems, a balance between their unitary and dissipative dynamics can be precisely engineered to stabilize a long-range correlated state of qubits in the steady state. We discuss the general theory behind such a scheme, and present an example of how it can be used to drive a register of N atoms to a generalized W state and how the entanglement can be sustain…
We explore the physics of topological lattice models in c-QED architectures for arbitrary coupling strength, and the use of the cavity transmission as a topological marker. For this, we develop an approach combining the input-output formalism with an expansion in quantum fluctuations which allows to go beyond the small-coupling regime. We apply our formalism to a fermionic Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chain coupled to a single-mode cavity, and find that the cavity can indeed act as a quantum sensor for topological phases, where the initial state preparation plays a crutial role. Additionally, we…
