In 2006 June, the obscured low luminosity active galactic nucleus in the nearby Seyfert 1.9 galaxy NGC 4258 was observed with Suzaku for ~ 100 ks. Utilizing the XIS and the HXD, the nucleus emission was detected over 2 to 40 keV range, with an unabsorbed 2--10 keV luminosity of 8 x 10 40 erg / s, and varied by a factor of ~ 2 during the observation. Its 2--40 keV spectrum is reproduced by a single power law with photon index of ~ 2.0, absorbed by an equivalent hydrogen column of ~ 1.0 x 10 23 cm2. The spectrum within 4' of the nucleus required also a softer thin-thermal emission, as well as an intermediate hardness component attributable to integrated point sources. A weak neutral Fe-Kalpha florescence line was detected at an equivalent width of ~ 40 eV. The cold reflection component was not required by the data, with the reflector solid angle Omega seen from the nucleus constrained as Omega / 2 pi < 0.3 assuming a general case of 60 deg inclination. The results suggest that the cold reflecting material around the nucleus is localized along our line of sight, rather than forming a thick torus.
Temperature and abundance distributions of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) in the NGC 507 group of galaxies were studied with Suzaku. Observed concentric annular spectra were well-represented by a two temperature model for ICM, and we found steeper abundance gradients for Mg, Si, S, and Fe compared with O in the central region. Abundance ratios of alpha-elements to iron were found to be similar to those in other groups and poor clusters. We calculated metal mass-to-light ratios for Fe, O and Mg (IMLR, OMLR, MMLR) for NGC 507, and values for different systems were compared. Hotter and richer sys…
Suzaku observation of the edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 4631 confirmed its X-ray halo extending out to about 10 kpc from the galactic disk. The XIS spectra yielded the temperature and metal abundance for the disk and the halo regions. The observed abundance pattern for O, Ne, Mg, Si and Fe is consistent with the metal yield from type II supernovae, with an O mass of about 1E6 Msun contained in the halo. These features imply that metal-rich gas produced by type II supernova is brought into the halo region very effectively, most likely through a galactic wind. Temperature and metal abundance may be …
We have obtained a broad-band spectrum of the Compton-thick Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 2273 with Suzaku. The spectrum reveals the first detection of hard X-rays above ~10 keV from NGC 2273. The broad-band spectrum is well represented by a three-component model, accompanied by both a strong iron Ka line with an equivalent width of ~ 1.8 keV and several weak lines. The three-component model consists of a soft component, a reflection component from cold matter, and an absorbed power-law component. The soft component can be represented by thin thermal emission with kT~0.56 keV or by a scattered componen…
The metallicity distribution in the intracluster medium of the NGC 5044 group was studied up to 0.3 r_180 using the XIS instrument on board the Suzaku satellite. Abundances of O, Mg, Si, S, and Fe were measured with high accuracy. The region within a radius of 0.05 r_180 from the center shows approximately solar abundances of Mg, Si, S, and Fe, while the O/Fe ratio is about 0.5--0.6 in solar units. In the outer region, the Fe abundance gradually drops to 0.3 solar. Radial abundance profiles of Mg, Si and S are similar to that of Fe, while that of O seems to be flatter. At r>0.05 r_180, the mas…
We report on a 100 ks Suzaku observation of the bright, nearby (z=0.008486) Seyfert 1.9 galaxy MCG -5-23-16. The broad-band (0.4-100 keV) X-ray spectrum allows us to determine the nature of the high energy emission with little ambiguity. The X-ray continuum consists of a cutoff power-law of photon index $Γ=1.9$, absorbed through Compton-thin matter of column density $N_{\rm H}=1.6\times10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$. A soft excess is observed below 1 keV and is likely a combination of emission from scattered continuum photons and distant photoionized gas. The iron K line profile is complex, showing narrow…
We present results from a 150 ksec Suzaku observation of the Seyfert 1.5 NGC 3516 in October 2005. The source was in a relatively highly absorbed state. Our best-fit model is consistent with the presence of a low-ionization absorber which has a column density near 5 * 10^{22} cm^{-2} and covers most of the X-ray continuum source (covering fraction 96-100%). A high-ionization absorbing component, which yields a narrow absorption feature consistent with Fe K XXVI, is confirmed. A relativistically broadened Fe K alpha line is required in all fits, even after the complex absorption is taken into a…
Suzaku observations of two hard X-ray (> 10 keV) selected nearby Seyfert 2 galaxies are presented. Both sources were clearly detected with the PIN Hard X-ray Detector up to several tens of keV, allowing for a fairly good characterization of the broad band X-ray continuum. Both sources are heavily obscured, one of which (NGC 5728) being Compton thick, while at lower energies the shape and intensity of the scattered/reflected continuum is very different. Strong iron Kalpha lines are detected in both sources. There are also hints for the presence of a broad relativistic iron line in NGC 4992.
Initial results on the iron K-shell line and reflection component in several AGN observed as part of the Suzaku Guaranteed time program are reviewed. This paper discusses a small sample of Compton-thin Seyferts observed to date with Suzaku; namely MCG -5-23-16, MCG -6-30-15, NGC 4051, NGC 3516, NGC 2110, 3C 120 and NGC 2992. The broad iron K$α$ emission line appears to be present in all but one of these Seyfert galaxies, while the narrow core of the line from distant matter is ubiquitous in all the observations. The iron line in MCG -6-30-15 shows the most extreme relativistic blurring of all …
The metallicity distribution in the Fornax cluster was studied with the XIS instrument onboard the Suzaku satellite. K-shell lines of O and Mg were resolved clearly, and the abundances of O, Mg, Si, S and Fe were measured with good accuracy. The region within a 4' radius of NGC 1399 shows approximately solar abundances of Fe, Si and S, while the O/Fe and Mg/Fe abundance ratios are about 0.4--0.5 and 0.7 in solar units. In the outer region spanning radii between 6' and 23', the Fe and Si abundances drop to 0.4--0.5 solar and show no significant gradient within this region. The abundance ratios,…
We report results from a Suzaku observation of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 NGC 4051. During our observation, large amplitude rapid variability is seen and the averaged 2--10 keV flux is 8.1x10^-12 erg s^-1 cm^-2, which is several times lower than the historical average. The X-ray spectrum hardens when the source flux becomes lower, confirming the trend of spectral variability known for many Seyfert 1 galaxies. The broad-band averaged spectrum and spectra in high and low flux intervals are analyzed. The spectra are first fitted with a model consisting of a power-law component, a reflection contin…
Two ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) in the nearby Sb galaxy NGC 1313, named X-1 and X-2, were observed with Suzaku on 2005 September 15. During the observation for a net exposure of 28~ks (but over a gross time span of 90~ks), both objects varied in intensity by about 50~%. The 0.4--10 keV X-ray luminosity of X-1 and X-2 was measured as $2.5 \times 10^{40}~{\rm erg~s^{-1}}$ and $5.8 \times 10^{39}~{\rm erg~s^{-1}}$, respectively, with the former the highest ever reported for this ULX. The spectrum of X-1 can be explained by a sum of a strong and variable power-law component with a high ener…
Suzaku observed a nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC4945, which hosts one of the brightest active galactic nuclei above 20 keV. Combining data from the X-ray CCD camera (XIS) and the Hard X-ray Detector (HXD), the AGN intrinsic nuclear emission and its reprocessed signals were observed simultaneously. The intrinsic emission is highly obscured with an absorbing column of $\sim 5 \times 10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$, and was detectable only above $\sim 10$ keV. The spectrum below 10 keV is dominated by reflection continuum and emission lines from neutral/ionized material. Along with a neutral iron K$α$ line, a ne…
This paper reports the discovery of a bright X-ray transient source, Suzaku J1305-4913, in the south-west arm of the nearby Seyfert II galaxy NGC 4945. It was detected at a 0.5 -- 10 keV flux of $2.2 \times 10^{-12}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ during the Suzaku observation conducted on 2006 January 15 -- 17, but was undetectable in a shorter observation on 2005 August 22 --23, with an upper limit of $1.7 \times 10^{-14}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ (90% confidence level). At a distance of 3.7 Mpc, the bolometric luminosity of the source becomes $L_{\rm bol} = 4.4 \times 10^{39} α$ erg s$^{-1}$, where $…
We report the detection of absorption features in the 6-8 micron region superimposed on a featureless mid-infrared continuum in NGC 4418. For several of these features this is the first detection in an external galaxy. We compare the absorption spectrum of NGC 4418 to that of embedded massive protostars and the Galactic centre, and attribute the absorption features to ice grains and to hydrogenated amorphous carbon grains. From the depth of the ice features, the powerful central source responsible for the mid-infrared emission must be deeply enshrouded. Since this emission is warm and originat…
The results of 3-4 $μ$m spectroscopy towards the nuclei of NGC 3094, NGC 7172, and NGC 7479 are reported. In ground-based 8-13 $μ$m spectra, all the sources have strong absorption-like features at $\sim$10 $μ$m, but they do not have detectable polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features. The 3.4 $μ$m carbonaceous dust absorption features are detected towards all nuclei. NGC 3094 shows a detectable 3.3 $μ$m PAH emission feature, while NGC 7172 and NGC 7479 do not. Nuclear emission whose spectrum shows dust absorption features but no PAH emission features is thought to dominated by h…
Suzaku observation of an ultraluminous X-ray source, NGC 2403 Source 3, performed on 2006 March 16--17, is reported. The Suzaku XIS spectrum of Source 3 was described with a multi-color black-body-like emission from an optically thick accretion disk. The innermost temperature and radius of the accretion disk was measured to be $T_{\rm in} = 1.08_{-0.03}^{+0.02} $ keV and $R_{\rm in} = 122.1_{-6.8}^{+7.7} α^{1/2}$ km, respectively, where $α= (\cos 60^\circ /\cos i)$ with $i$ being the disk inclination. The bolometric luminosity of the source was estimated to be $L_{\rm bol} = 1.82 \times 10^{39…
We present results from an XMM-Newton observation of the nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC5643. The nucleus exhibits a very flat X-ray continuum above 2 keV, together with a prominent K-alpha fluorescent iron line. This indicates heavy obscuration. We measure an absorbing column density N_H in the range 6-10 x 10^{23} atoms/cm/cm, either directly covering the nuclear emission, or covering its Compton-reflection. In the latter case, we might be observing a rather unusual geometry for the absorber, whereby reflection from the inner far side of a torus is in turn obscured by its near side outer atmosph…
We present deep, high angular resolution near-infrared images of the obscured Galactic Giant H II region NGC3576. Our images reach objects to ~3M_sun. We collected high signal-to-noise K-band spectra of eight of the brightest objects, some of which are affected by excess emission and some which follow a normal interstellar reddening law. None of them displayed photospheric features typical of massive OB type stars. This indicates that they are still enshrouded in their natal cocoons. The K-band brightest source (NGC3576 #48) shows CO 2.3 micron bandhead emission, and three others have the same…
The ISO-SWS 2.5-45 um infrared spectroscopic observations of the nucleus of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068 (see companion paper) are combined with a compilation of UV to IR narrow emission line data to determine the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the obscured extreme-UV continuum that photoionizes the narrow line emitting gas in the active galactic nucleus. We search a large grid of gas cloud models and SEDs for the combination that best reproduces the observed line fluxes and NLR geometry. Our best fit model reproduces the observed line fluxes to better than a factor of 2 on average and…
Spectroscopy at 8-13 microns with T-ReCS on Gemini-S is presented for 3 galaxies with substantial silicate absorption features, NGC 3094, NGC 7172 and NGC 5506. In the galaxies with the deepest absorption bands, the silicate profile towards the nuclei is well represented by the emissivity function derived from the circumstellar emission from the red supergiant, mu Cephei which is also representative of the mid-infrared absorption in the diffuse interstellar medium in the Galaxy. There is spectral structure near 11.2 microns in NGC 3094 which may be due to a component of crystalline silicates. …
We present detailed time-averaged X-ray spectroscopy in the 0.5--10 keV band of the Seyfert~1.9 galaxy NGC 2992 with the Suzaku X-ray Imaging Spectrometers (XIS). We model the complex continuum in detail. There is an Fe K line emission complex that we model with broad and narrow lines and we show that the intensities of the two components are decoupled at a confidence level >3sigma. The broad Fe K line has an EW of 118 (+32,-61) eV and could originate in an accretion disk (with inclination angle greater than ~30 degrees). The narrow Fe Kalpha line has an EW of 163 (+47,-26) eV and is unresolve…
We present an analysis of the extreme obscuration variability observed during an XMM-Newton 5-days continuous monitoring of the AGN in NGC 1365. The source was in a reflection-dominated state in the first ~1.5 days, then a strong increase of the 7-10 keV emission was observed in ~10 hours, followed by a symmetric decrease. The spectral analysis of the different states clearly shows that this variation is due to an uncovering of the X-ray source. From this observation we estimate a size of the X-ray source D_S<10^13 cm, a distance of the obscuring clouds R~10^16 cm and a density n~10^11 cm^{-3}…
ASCA observations of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 7582 revealed it was highly variable on the timescale of $\sim2\times10^4$ s in the hard X-ray (2-10 keV) band, while the soft X-ray (0.5-2 keV) flux remained constant during the observations. The spectral analysis suggests that this object is seen through an obscuring torus with the thickness of N$_{\rm H}\sim1.0\times 10^{23}\rm cm^{-2}$. The hard X-ray is an absorbed direct continuum from a hidden Seyfert 1 nucleus; the soft X-ray is dominated by the scattered central continuum from an extended spatial region. Thus we have an obscured/absorbed a…
Images in the J, H and K bands and in the the v=1-0 S(1) line of H2 of the central region of the almost edge-on galaxy NGC 3079 reveal contributions from direct and scattered starlight, emission from hot dust and molecular gas, and extinction gradients. The central 100 pc suffers an extinction of 6 mag. Extremely red near-infrared colours require the presence of hot dust at about 1000 K. Less reddened parts of the bulge require either a 20% J-band contribution from young stars in a stellar bar, or a 20-30% contribution from scattered stellar light. The nucleus is surrounded by a dense molecula…
The wide-band energy spectrum of NGC6240 over the range 0.5-200keV is investigated using the RXTE and ASCA data. The RXTE data provide the spectrum beyond the ASCA range (0.5-10 keV) with significant detection of signals up to 20keV and the upper limits above 20keV. The spectrum above 10keV is found to be very flat. A strong iron-K emission line discovered in the previous ASCA observation is also confirmed with the RXTE PCA. These results provide further evidence for the dominance of a reflection component, i.e. emission from cool material illuminated by an AGN. By fitting the spectra obtained…
We present infrared spectroscopy of the Antennae Galaxies (NGC 4038/4039) with NIRSPEC at the W. M. Keck Observatory. We imaged the star clusters in the vicinity of the southern nucleus (NGC 4039) in 0.39" seeing in K-band using NIRSPEC's slit-viewing camera. The brightest star cluster revealed in the near-IR (M_K(0) = -17.9) is insignificant optically, but coincident with the highest surface brightness peak in the mid-IR (12-18 um) ISO image presented by Mirabel et al (1998). We obtained high signal-to-noise 2.03-2.45 um spectra of the nucleus and the obscured star cluster at R = 1900. The cl…

We present results on the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC4388 in the Virgo cluster observed with ASCA during its PV phase. The 0.5-10 keV X-ray spectrum consists of multiple components; (1) a continuum component heavily absorbed by a column density NH = 4E23 cm-2 above 3 keV; (2) a strong 6.4 keV line (EW = 500 eV); (3) a weak flat continuum between 1 and 3 keV; and (4) excess soft X-ray emission below 1 keV. The detection of strong absorption for the hard X-ray component is firm evidence for an obscured active nucleus in this Seyfert 2 galaxy. The absorption corrected X-ray luminosity is about 2E42 erg/…
The ISO-SWS infrared spectroscopic observations of the nucleus of Seyfert galaxy NGC4151, which are described in a companion paper, are used together with a compilation of UV to IR narrow emission line data to determine the spectral shape of the obscured extreme-UV continuum that photoionizes the narrow line emitting gas in the active galactic nucleus. We present a new method to determine the best fitting photoionizing continuum and emission line cloud model from a heterogeneous set of emission line data. For NGC4151, we find a best-fit model that reproduces the observed line fluxes to within …
We investigate the stellar populations in the star forming ring of the luminous infrared galaxy NGC 7469. We use Hubble Space Telescope multi-wavelength (UV through NIR) imaging complemented with new K-band ground-based long-slit spectroscopy, and mid-IR and radio maps. Spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and evolutionary synthesis models have been used to characterize the star formation at different scales from those of individual star clusters (tens of pc) to that of the entire star-forming ring (kpc scale). At the smallest scales two different populations of massive (1-10 x 10^6 Msun) clus…
We observed the nearby galaxy M~51 (NGC 5194) with BeppoSAX. The X-ray properties of the nucleus below 10 keV are almost the same as the ASCA results regarding the hard component and the neutral Fe K$α$ line, but the intensity is about half of the ASCA 1993 data. Beyond this, in the BeppoSAX PDS data, we detected a bright hard X-ray emission component which dominates above 10 keV. The 10 -- 100 keV flux and luminosity of this component are respectively $2\times10^{-11}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ and $2\times10^{41}$ erg s$^{-1}$. These are about 10 times higher than the extrapolation from the sof…
We have discovered an extremely broad, double-peaked H-alpha emission line in the polarized flux spectrum of NGC 2110, establishing that this well-studied Seyfert 2 galaxy contains a disk-like hidden broad-line region (BLR). Several properties of NGC 2110 suggest that it is an obscured twin of Arp 102B, the prototypical double-peaked emission-line active galactic nucleus (AGN). A comparison between our data and previous spectra of NGC 2110 indicates that the double-peaked H-alpha feature is transient. The presence of a disk-like BLR in NGC 2110 has important implications for AGNs: it expands t…
Tracking the star formation rate to high redshifts requires knowledge of the contribution from both optically visible and obscured sources. The dusty, optically-obscured galaxies can be located by X-ray and infrared surveys. To establish criteria for selecting such sources based only on X-ray and infrared surveys, we determine the ratio of infrared to X-ray brightness that would be observed by SIRTF and Chandra for objects with the same spectral shapes as nearby starbursts if seen at high redshift. The parameter IR/X is defined as IR/X = (flux density observed in SIRTF MIPS 24 $μ$m filter in m…
We have detected a broad H alpha emission line in the polarized flux spectrum of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 788, indicating that it contains an obscured Seyfert 1 nucleus. While such features have been observed in ~15 other Seyfert 2s, this example is unusual because it has a higher fraction of galaxy starlight in its spectrum, a lower average measured polarization, and a significantly lower radio luminosity than other hidden Seyfert 1s discovered to date. This demonstrates that polarized broad-line regions can be detected in relatively weak classical Seyfert 2s, and illustrates why well-defined…
We present the results of infrared 2.8-4.1 micron (L-band) spectroscopy of nearby infrared luminous galaxies with possible signatures of dust-obscured active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in data at other wavelengths. The samples are chosen to include sources with a radio excess relative to far-infrared emission, strong absorption features in mid-infrared 5-11.5 micron spectra, unusually weak [CII] 158 micron emission relative to the far-infrared continuum, and radio galaxies classified optically as narrow-line objects. Our aim is to investigate whether the signatures of possible obscured AGNs can be…
We have imaged the H92alpha and H75alpha radio recombination line (RRL) emissions from the starburst galaxy NGC 253 with a resolution of ~4 pc. The peak of the RRL emission at both frequencies coincides with the unresolved radio nucleus. Both lines observed towards the nucleus are extremely wide, with FWHM of ~200 km /s. Modeling the RRL and radio continuum data for the radio nucleus shows that the lines arise in gas whose density is ~10^4 \cc and mass is few thousand Msun, which requires an ionizing flux of (6-20)x10^{51} photons /s. We consider a SNR expanding in a dense medium, a star clust…
We present results from an HST study of the morphology and kinematics of NGC 6240. This merging galaxy with a double nucleus is one of the nearest and best-studied ultraluminous infrared galaxies. HST resolves both nuclei into seperate components. The distance between the northern and southern optical/near-infrared components is greater than that observed in radio and X-ray studies, arguing that even in K-band we may not be seeing all the way through the dust to the true nuclei. The ionized gas does not display rotation around either of the nuclei, or equilibrium motion in general. There is a …
An observation of the West lobe of radio galaxy Fornax A (NGC 1316) with Suzaku is reported. Since Feigelson et al. (1995) and Kaneda et al. (1995) discovered the cosmic microwave background boosted inverse-Comptonized (IC) X-rays from the radio lobe, the magnetic field and electron energy density in the lobes have been estimated under the assumption that a single component of the relativistic electrons generates both the IC X-rays and the synchrotron radio emission. However, electrons generating the observed IC X-rays in the 1 -- 10 keV band do not possess sufficient energy to radiate the obs…
We present an extraordinary variation of the X-ray spectrum of the obscured AGN in NGC 1365, which was observed by Chandra to change from Compton-thin to Compton-thick and back to Compton-thin in four days. This fast variation imply a a size of ~10^14 cm for the emitting region, and an extremely compact size (~10^16 cm) of the clumpy circumnuclear absorber.
We report infrared spectroscopy of the prototypical Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068, aiming at detection of broad components of hydrogen recombination lines that originate in the obscured broad-line region. Using the Short Wavelength Spectrometer on board the Infrared Space Observatory, we have observed for the first time the regions of Brackett beta 2.626um and Pfund alpha 7.460um, and present improved data for Brackett alpha 4.052um. No significant broad components are detected, implying an equivalent visual extinction to the broad-line region of at least 50 magnitudes and an obscuring column dens…
Near infrared images of the Galactic giant HII region W43 reveal a dense stellar cluster at its center. Broad band JHK photometry of the young cluster and K-band spectra of three of its bright stars are presented. The 2 micron spectrum of the brightest star in the cluster is very well matched to the spectra of Wolf-Rayet stars of sub-type WN7. Two other stars are identified as O type giants or supergiants by their NIII and CIV emission. The close spatial clustering of O and the hydrogen WN type stars is analogous to the intense star burst clusters R136 in the Large Magellanic Cloud and NGC3603…
The Dwingeloo Obscured Galaxies Survey (DOGS) is a 21-cm blind survey for galaxies hidden in the northern "Zone of Avoidance" (ZOA): the portion of the optical extragalactic sky which is obscured by dust in the Milky Way. Like the Parkes southern hemisphere ZOA survey, the DOGS project is designed to reveal hidden dynamically important nearby galaxies and to help "fill in the blanks" in the local large scale structure. To date, 36 galaxies have been detected by the Dwingeloo survey; 23 of these were previously unknown (no corresponding sources recorded in the NASA Extragalactic Database (NED))…
In this paper we present INTEGRAL observations of 7 AGNs: two newly discovered type 1 Seyferts, IGR J18027-1455 and IGR J21247+5058, and five well known Seyferts, NGC 6814 (type 1.5), Cyg A (Type 2), MCG-05-23-16 (type 2), ESO 103-G035 (type2) and GRS1734-292. For IGR J18027-1455 and IGR J21247+5058 only INTEGRAL/IBIS data were available, while broadband spectra are presented and discussed for the remaining 5 sources for which either BeppoSAX or ASCA data were used in conjunction with INTEGRAL measurements. In the cases of NGC 6814 and GRS 1734-292, data taken in different periods indicate var…
We present Chandra ACIS-S observations of the enigmatic Seyfert-2 galaxy NGC4698. This object together with several other bona-fide Seyfert-2 galaxies show no absorption in the low spatial resolution ASCA data, in contrast to the standard unification models. Our Chandra observations of NGC4698 probe directly the nucleus allowing us to check whether nearby sources contaminate the ASCA spectrum. Indeed, the Chandra observations show that the ASCA spectrum is dominated by two nearby AGN. The X-ray flux of NGC4698 is dominated by a nuclear source with luminosity L(0.3-8 keV) ~ 10^39, erg s-1 coinc…
We analyze recent simultaneous Chandra/RXTE observations of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 4945. The unprecedented spatial resolution of Chandra means we are able to separate the spectra of the nucleus, starburst and superwind regions, while the RXTE data extend the spectrum to higher energies. The extreme absorbing column of $N_H\sim 4\times 10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$ means that the nucleus is only seen directly above 8--10 keV, while the lower energy spectrum from the nuclear region in Chandra is dominated by reflection. By contrast, the superwind is dominated by emission from hot plasma, but the starburs…
We have discovered polarized broad emission lines in five type 2 Seyfert galaxies (NGC 424, NGC 591, NGC 2273, NGC 3081, and NGC 4507), establishing that these objects are type 1 Seyferts obscured by dense circumnuclear material. The galaxies are part of a distance-limited sample of 31 Seyfert 2s, for which spectropolarimetric observations are now complete. Combined with published reports, our results indicate that at least 11 of the galaxies in this sample, or > 35%, possess hidden broad-line regions. This represents the first reliable estimate of the frequency of polarized broad emission lin…
