The high linear charge density of 20-base-pair oligomers of DNA is shown to lead to a striking non-monotonic dependence of the long-time self-diffusion on the concentration of the DNA in low-salt conditions. This generic non-monotonic behavior results from both the strong coupling between the electrostatic and solvent-mediated hydrodynamic interactions, and from the renormalization of these electrostatic interactions at large separations, and specifically from the dominance of the far-field hydrodynamic interactions caused by the strong repulsion between the DNA fragments.
A new modified Poisson-Boltzmann equation accounting for the finite size of the ions valid for realistic salt-free concentrated suspensions has been derived, extending the formalism developed for pure salt-free suspensions [Roa et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2011, 13, 3960-3968] to real experimental conditions. These realistic suspensions include water dissociation ions and those generated by atmospheric carbon dioxide contamination, in addition to the added counterions released by the particles to the solution. The electric potential at the particle surface will be calculated for different …
We report a study of DNA (150 bp fragments) conformations in very low added salt $<0.05$mM, across wide DNA concentration range $0.0015\leq c \leq 8$~mM (bp). We found an intermediate DNA conformation in the region $0.05 < c < 1$~mM, by means of fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) and UV-absorbance measurements. FCS detected that in this region DNA has the diffusion coefficient, $D_p$ reduced below the values for both ssDNA coils and native dsDNA helices of similar polymerization degree $N$. Thus, this DNA population can not be a simple mix of dsDNA and of ssDNA which results from DNA …
The cations, in form of salt, present in the solution containing DNA play a crucial role in the opening of two strands of DNA. We use a simple non linear model and investigate the role of these cations on the mechanical unzipping of DNA. The Hamiltonian is modified to incoporate the solvent effect and the cations present in the solution. We calculate the melting temperature as well as the critical force that is required to unzip the DNA molecule as a function of salt concentration of the solution. The phase diagrams are found to be in close agreement with the experimental phase diagrams.
We study the electrophoretic mobility of spherical particles and the electrical conductivity in salt-free concentrated suspensions including finite ion size effects. An ideal salt-free suspension is composed of just charged colloidal particles and the added counterions that counterbalance their surface charge. In a very recent paper [Roa et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2011, 13, 3960- 3968] we presented a model for the equilibrium electric double layer for this kind of suspensions considering the size of the counterions, and now we extend this work to analyze the response of the suspension un…
We analyze the influence of finite ion size effects in the response of a salt-free concentrated suspension of spherical particles to an oscillating electric field. Salt-free suspensions are just composed of charged colloidal particles and the added counterions released by the particles to the solution, that counterbalance their surface charge. In the frequency domain, we study the dynamic electrophoretic mobility of the particles and the dielectric response of the suspension. We find that the Maxwell-Wagner-O'Konski process associated with the counterions condensation layer, is enhanced for mo…
The equilibrium electric double layer (EDL) that surrounds the colloidal particles is determinant for the response of a suspension under a variety of static or alternating external fields. An ideal salt-free suspension is composed by the charged colloidal particles and the ionic countercharge released by the charging mechanism. The existing macroscopic theoretical models can be improved by incorporating different ionic effects usually neglected in previous mean-field approaches, which are based on the Poisson-Boltzmann equation (PB). The influence of the finite size of the ions seems to be qui…
We study the role of cations on the stability of double stranded DNA (dsDNA) molecules. It is known that the two strands of double stranded DNA(dsDNA) have negative charge due to phosphate group. Cations in the form of salt in the solution, act as shielding agents thereby reducing the repulsion between these strands. We study several heterogeneous DNA molecules. We calculate the phase diagrams for DNA molecules in thermal as well as in force ensembles using Peyrard-Bishop-Dauxois (PBD) model. The dissociation and the stacking energies are the two most important factors that play an important ro…
Thermodynamic properties of charge-stabilised colloidal suspensions are commonly modeled by implementing the mean-field Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) theory within a cell model. This approach models a bulk system by a single macroion, together with counterions and salt ions, confined to a symmetrically shaped, electroneutral cell. While easing solution of the nonlinear PB equation, the cell model neglects microion-induced correlations between macroions, precluding modeling of macroion ordering phenomena. An alternative approach, avoiding artificial constraints of cell geometry, maps a macroion-microi…
We quantified the Manning free (uncondensed) counterions fraction $θ$ for dilute solutions of rod-like polyions - 150bp DNA fragments, in very low salt $<0.05$mM. Conductivity measurements of aqueous DNA solutions in the concentration range $0.015\leq c \leq 8$~mM (bp) were complemented by fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) measurements of the DNA polyion diffusion coefficient $D_p(c)$. We observed a crossover in the normalized conductivity $σ(c)/c$ which nearly halved across $c=0.05-1$ mM range, while $D_p(c)$ remained rather constant, as we established by FCS. Analyzing these data w…
In this work we study the aging behavior of aqueous suspension of Laponite having 2.8 weight % concentration using rheological tools. At various salt concentration all the samples demonstrate orientational order when observed using crossed polarizers. In rheological experiments we observe inherent irreversibility in the aging dynamics which forces the system not to rejuvenate to the same state in the shear melting experiment carried out at a later date since preparation. The extensive rheological experiments carried out as a function of time elapsed since preparation demonstrate the self simil…
We report on a detailed characterization of complex dielectric response of Na-DNA aqueous solutions by means of low-frequency dielectric spectroscopy (40 Hz - 110 MHz). Results reveal two broad relaxation modes of strength 20<Δε_LF<100 and 5<Δε_HF<20, centered at 0.5 kHz<ν_LF<70 kHz and 0.1 MHz<ν_HF<15 MHz. The characteristic length scale of the LF process, 50<L_LF<750nm, scales with DNA concentration as c_DNA^{-0.29\pm0.04} and is independent of the ionic strength in the low added salt regime. Conversely, the measured length scale of the LF process does not vary with DNA concentration but dep…
Dielectric spectroscopy is used to investigate fundamental length scales of 146 bp short-fragment (nucleosomal) dilute Na-DNA solutions. Two relaxation modes are detected: the high- and the low-frequency mode. Dependence of the corresponding length scales on the DNA and on the (uni-valent) salt concentration is studied in detail, being different from the case of long, genomic DNA, investigated before. In low added salt regime, the length scale of the high-frequency mode scales as the average separation between DNAs, though it is smaller in absolute magnitude, whereas the length scale of the lo…
Intracellular positive ions neutralise negative charges on the phosphates of a DNA strand conferring greater strength on the hydrogen bonds that connect complementary strands into a double helix and so confer enhanced stability. Beyond a certain value of salt concentration, the DNA molecule displays a unstable nature {\it in vivo} as well as {\it in vitro}. We consider a wide range of salt concentrations and study the stability of the DNA double helix using a statistical model. Through numerical calculations we attempt to explain the different behaviour exhibited by DNA molecules in this range…
Monte Carlo simulations have been performed for aqueous charged colloidal suspensions as a function of charge density on the particles and salt concentration. We vary the charge density in our simulations over a range where a reentrant solid-liquid transition in suspensions of silica and polymer latex particles has been reported by Yamanaka et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80 5806 (1998)]. We show that at low ionic strengths a homogeneous liquid-like ordered suspension undergoes crystallization upon increasing charge density . Further increase in charge density resulted once again a disordered state w…
Atomic Force Microscopy analysis is employed to study the geometrical and topological properties of $3000$kbp DNA molecules fixed in mica substrates with $MgCl_{2}$. We found that the aggregates on the substrate surface for certain salt concentrations form a honeycomb stable structure with the addition of salt. The honeycomb, and the transition to other structures, were characterized by the \emph{Betti numbers}, which is a topological invariant property and by \emph{Hausdorff-Besicovitch fractal dimension}.
DNA deformations play crucial roles in many biological processes and material applications. During DNA deformation, DNA structural parameters often exhibit non-trivial and counterintuitive couplings, such as the twist-stretch and twist-bending couplings. Here, we reveal an unexpectedly strong negative twist-diameter coupling through the synergy of magnetic-tweezers experiments, atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, and theoretical calculations. In experiments, the DNA twist angle always increases with the concentration of NaCl, KCl, or RbCl. Our simulations quantitatively reproduce salt-in…
The effects of ionic ordering in DNA water solutions are studied by conductivity experiments. The conductivity measurements are performed for the solutions of DNA with KCl salt in the temperature range from 28 to 70 C. Salt concentration vary from 0 to 2 M. The conductivity of solutions without DNA but with the same concentration of KCl salt are also performed. The results show that in case of salt free solution of DNA the melting process of the double helix is observed, while in case of DNA solution with added salt the macromolecule denaturation is not featured. For salt concentrations lower …
Upon the addition of multivalent cations, a giant DNA chain exhibits a large discrete transition from an elongated coil into a folded compact state. We performed single-chain observation of long DNAs in the presence of a tetravalent cation (spermine), at various temperatures and monovalent salt concentrations. We confirmed that the compact state is preferred at higher temperatures and at lower monovalent salt concentrations. This result is interpreted in terms of an increase in the net translational entropy of small ions due to ionic exchange between higher and lower valence ions.
Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are used to determine the diffusion coefficients, electrophoretic mobilities and electrical conductivity of a charged colloidal suspension in the salt-free regime as a function of the colloid charge. The behavior of the colloidal particles' diffusion constant can be well understood in terms of two coupled effects: counterion 'condensation' and slowdown due to the relaxation effect. We find that the conductivity exhibits a maximum which approximately separates the regimes of counterion-dominated and colloid-dominated conduction. We analyze the electrophoretic…
A study of a model rod-like polyelectrolyte molecule immersed into a monovalent or divalent electrolyte is presented. Results from the hypernetted-chain/mean spherical approximation (HNC/MSA) theory, for inhomogeneous charged fluids, {\ch are} compared with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. As a particular case, the parameters of the polyelectrolyte molecule are mapped to those of a DNA molecule. An excellent qualitative, and in some cases quantitative, agreement between HNC/MSA and MD is found. Both, HNC/MSA and MD, predict the occurrence of overcharging, which is not present in the Poisso…
The effective force between two parallel DNA molecules is calculated as a function of their mutual separation for different valencies of counter- and salt ions and different salt concentrations. Computer simulations of the primitive model are used and the shape of the DNA molecules is accurately modelled using different geometrical shapes. We find that multivalent ions induce a significant attraction between the DNA molecules whose strength can be tuned by the averaged valency of the ions. The physical origin of the attraction is traced back either to electrostatics or to entropic contribution…
Recent experiments of translocation of double stranded DNA through nanopores [M. Wanunu \textit{et al.} Nature Nanotech. {\bf 5}, 160 (2010)] reveal that the DNA capture rate can be significantly influenced by a salt gradient across the pore. We show that osmotic flow combined with electrophoretic effects can quantitatively explain the experimental data on the salt-gradient dependence of the capture rate.
We investigate knotting probabilities of long double-stranded DNA strands in a coarse-grained Kratky-Porod model for DNA with Monte Carlo simulations. Various ionic conditions are implemented by adjusting the effective diameter of monomers. We find that the occurrence of knots in DNA can be reinforced considerably by high salt conditions and confinement between plates. Likewise, knots can almost be dissolved completely in a low salt scenario. Comparisons with recent experiments confirm that the coarse-grained model is able to capture and quantitatively predict topological features of DNA and c…
The structure and dynamics of negatively charged nucleic acids strongly correlate with the concentration and charge of the oppositely charged counter-ions. It is well known that the structural collapse of DNA is favored in the presence of additional salt, a source of excess oppositely charged ions. Under such conditions single stranded DNA adopts a collapsed coil like conformation, typically characterized by stacking base pairs. Using atomistic molecular dynamics simulation, we demonstrate that in the presence of additional divalent salt (MgCl2) single stranded DNA (Dickerson Drew dodecamer) i…
The problem of DNA$-$DNA interaction mediated by divalent counterions is studied using a generalized Grand-canonical Monte-Carlo simulation for a system of two salts. The effect of the divalent counterion size on the condensation behavior of the DNA bundle is investigated. Experimentally, it is known that multivalent counterions have strong effect on the DNA condensation phenomenon. While tri- and tetra-valent counterions are shown to easily condense free DNA molecules in solution into toroidal bundles, the situation with divalent counterions are not as clear cut. Some divalent counterions lik…
We describe a method to simulate the dynamics of charged colloidal particles suspended in a liquid containing dissociated ions and salt ions. Regimes of prime current interest are those of large volume fraction of colloids, highly charged particles and low salt concentrations. A description which is tractable under these conditions is obtained by treating the small dissociated and salt ions as continuous fields, while keeping the colloidal macroions as discrete particles. For each spatial configuration of the macroions, the electrostatic potential arising from all charges in the system is dete…
The response of a suspension under a variety of static or alternating external fields strongly depends on the equilibrium electric double layer that surrounds the colloidal particles in the suspension. The theoretical models for salt-free suspensions can be improved by incorporating non-uniform size effects and orientational ordering of water dipoles neglected in previous mean-field approaches, which are based on the Poisson-Boltzmann approach. Our model including non-uniform size effects and orientational ordering of water dipoles seems to have quite a promising effect because the model can p…
We introduce an extended version of oxDNA, a coarse-grained model of DNA designed to capture the thermodynamic, structural and mechanical properties of single- and double-stranded DNA. By including explicit major and minor grooves, and by slightly modifying the coaxial stacking and backbone-backbone interactions, we improve the ability of the model to treat large (kilobase-pair) structures such as DNA origami which are sensitive to these geometric features. Further, we extend the model, which was previously parameterised to just one salt concentration ([Na$^+$]=0.5M), so that it can be used fo…
We have adsorbed plasmid PuC19 DNA on a supported bilayer. The mobility of the lipids within the bilayer ensured a 2D equilibrium of the DNA molecule. By varying the fraction of cationic lipids in the membrane, we have tuned the surface charge. Plasmids conformations were imaged by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM).We performed two sets of experiments: deposition from salt free solution on charged bilayers and deposition from salty solutions on neutral bilayers. Plasmids can be seen as rings, completely opened structures, or tightly supercoiled plectonemes, depending on the experimental conditions…
Using both theoretical modeling and computer simulations we study a model system for DNA interactions in the vicinity of charged membranes. We focus on the polarization of the mobile charges in the membranes due to the nearby charged rods (DNA) and the resulting screening of their fields and inter-rod interactions. We find, both within a Debye-Huckel model and in Brownian dynamics simulations, that the confinement of the mobile charges to the surface leads to a qualitative reduction in their ability to screen the charged rods to the degree that the fields and resulting interactions are not fin…
By molecular dynamics simulation, we study the charge inversion phenomenon of a rod macroion in the presence of polyelectrolyte counterions. We simulate electrophoresis of the macroion under an applied electric field. When both counterions and coions are polyelectrolytes, charge inversion occurs if the line charge density of the counterions is larger than that of the coions. For the macroion of surface charge density equal to that of the DNA, the reversed mobility is realized either with adsorption of the multivalent counterion polyelectrolyte or the combination of electrostatics and other mec…
We study aging behavior of aqueous suspension of Laponite as a function of concentration of Laponite, concentration of salt, time elapsed since preparation of suspension (idle time) and temperature by carrying extensive rheological and conductivity experiments. We observe that temporal evolution of elastic modulus, which describes structural buildup and aging, shifts to low times for experiments carried out for higher concentration of Laponite, higher concentration of salt, greater temperature and on higher idle time while preserving the curvature of evolution in the solid regime. Consequently…
Sets of free energy differences are useful for finding the equilibria of chemical reactions, while absolute free energies have little physical meaning. However finding the relative free energy between two macrostates by subtraction of their absolute free energies is a valuable strategy in certain important cases. We present calculations of absolute free energies of biomolecules, using a combination of the well-known Einstein Molecule method (for treating the solute) with a conceptually related method of recent genesis for computing free energies of liquids (to treat the solvent and counterions…
Efficient mixing of colloids, particles or molecules is a central issue in many processes. It results from the complex interplay between flow deformations and molecular diffusion, which is generally assumed to control the homogenization processes. In this work we demonstrate on the contrary that despite fixed flow and self-diffusion conditions, the chaotic mixing of colloidal suspensions can be either boosted or inhibited by the sole addition of trace amount of salt as a co-mixing species. Indeed, this shows that local saline gradients can trigger a chemically-driven transport phenomenon, diff…
The electrostatic complexation between DOTAP-DOPC unilamellar liposomes and an oppositely charged polyelectrolyte (NaPA) has been investigated in a wide range of the liposome surface charge density. We systematically characterized the "reentrant condensation" and the charge inversion of polyelectrolyte-decorated liposomes by means of dynamic light scattering and electrophoresis. We explored the stability of this model polyelectrolyte/colloid system by fixing each time the charge of the bare liposomes and by changing two independent control parameters of the suspensions: the polyelectrolyte/col…
Solid-state nanopores are single molecule sensors that measure changes in ionic current as charged polymers such as DNA pass through. Here, we present comprehensive experiments on the length, voltage and salt dependence of the frequency of double-stranded DNA translocations through conical quartz nanopores with mean opening diameter 15 nm. We observe an entropic barrier limited, length dependent translocation frequency at 4M LiCl salt concentration and a drift-dominated, length independent translocation frequency at 1M KCl salt concentration. These observations are described by a unifying conv…
Because micro-ions accumulate around highly charged colloidal particles in electrolyte solutions, the relevant parameter to compute their interactions is not the bare charge, but an effective (or renormalized) quantity, whose value is sensitive to the geometry of the colloid, the temperature or the presence of added-salt. This non-linear screening effect is a central feature in the field of colloidal suspensions or polyelectrolyte solutions. We propose a simple method to predict effective charges of highly charged macro-ions, that is reliable for mono-valent electrolytes (and counter-ions) in …
We develop an analytical theory that accounts for the image and surface charge interactions between a charged dielectric membrane and a DNA molecule translocating through the membrane. Translocation events through neutral carbon-based membranes are driven by a competition between the repulsive DNA-image-charge interactions and the attractive coupling between the DNA segments on the trans and the cis sides of the membrane. The latter effect is induced by the reduction of the coupling by the dielectric membrane. In strong salt solutions where the repulsive image-charge effects dominate the attra…
We investigate the salt-dependent current modulation of bundled DNA nanostructures in a nanopore. To this end, we developed four simulation models for a 2x2 origami structure with increasing level of detail: from the mean-field level to an all-atom representation of the DNA structure. We observe a consistent pore conductivity as a function of salt concentration for all four models. However, a comparison of our data to recent experimental investigations on similar systems displays significant deviations. We discuss possible reasons for the discrepancies and propose extensions to our models for …
Strongly correlated electrostatics of DNA systems has drawn the interest of many groups, especially the condensation and overcharging of DNA by multivalent counterions. By adding counterions of different valencies and shapes, one can enhance or reduce DNA overcharging. In this papers, we focus on the effect of multivalent co-ions, specifically divalent co-ions such as SO$_4^{2-}$. A computational experiment of DNA condensation using Monte$-$Carlo simulation in grand canonical ensemble is carried out where DNA system is in equilibrium with a bulk solution containing a mixture of salt of differe…
We study the electrophoretic mobility of spherical charged colloids in a low-salt suspension as a function of the colloidal concentration. Using an effective particle charge and a reduced screening parameter, we map the data for systems with different particle charges and sizes, including numerical simulation data with full electrostatics and hydrodynamics and experimental data for latex dispersions, on a single master curve. We observe two different volume fraction-dependent regimes for the electrophoretic mobility that can be explained in terms of the static properties of the ionic double la…
Dielectric spectroscopy is used to investigate fundamental length scales describing the structure of hyaluronic acid sodium salt (Na-HA) semidilute aqueous solutions. In salt-free regime, the length scale of the relaxation mode detected in MHz range scales with HA concentration as $c_\mathrm{HA}^{-0.5}$ and corresponds to the de Gennes-Pfeuty-Dobrynin correlation length of polyelectrolytes in semidilute solution. The same scaling was observed for the case of long, genomic DNA. Conversely, the length scale of the mode detected in kHz range also varies with HA concentration as $c_\mathrm{HA}^{-0…
Adsorption of monovalent and multivalent cat- and anions on a deoxyribose nucleic acid (DNA) molecule from a salt solution is investigated by computer simulation. The ions are modelled as charged hard spheres, the DNA molecule as a point charge pattern following the double-helical phosphate strands. The geometrical shape of the DNA molecules is modelled on different levels ranging from a simple cylindrical shape to structured models which include the major and minor grooves between the phosphate strands. The densities of the ions adsorbed on the phosphate strands, in the major and in the minor…
We investigate pressure driven pipe flow of Laponite suspension, as a model thixotropic fluid. The tendency of the suspension to age is controlled by addition of sodium chloride salt to vary the ionic strength. We use a syringe pump to prescribe the flow and observe that a steady state flow is obtained. Unusually, the steady state pressure drop required to maintain a constant flow rate decreases with an increase in the flow rate, in qualitative contrast to the expectation for Poiseuille flow. We demonstrate that experimental results obtained by varying the flow rate, salt concentration, and fl…
The electrostatic contribution to twist rigidity of DNA is studied, and it is shown that the Coulomb self-energy of the double-helical sugar-phosphate backbone contributes considerably to twist rigidity of DNA--the electrostatic twist rigidity of DNA is found as $C_{\rm elec}\approx 5$ nm, which makes up about 7% of its total twist rigidity ($C_{\rm DNA}\approx 75$ nm). The electrostatic twist rigidity is found, however, to only weakly depend on the salt concentration, because of a competition between two different screening mechanisms: (1) Debye screening by the salt ions in the bulk, and (2)…
Using high-throughput Tethered Particle Motion single molecule experiments, the double-stranded DNA persistence length, $L_p$, is measured in solutions with Na$^+$ and Mg$^{2+}$ ions of various ionic strengths, $I$. Several theoretical equations for $L_p(I)$ are fitted to the experimental data, but no decisive theory is found which fits all the $L_p$ values for the two ion valencies. Properly extracted from the particle trajectory using simulations, $L_p$ varies from 30~nm to 55~nm, and is compared to previous experimental results. For the Na$^+$ only case, $L_p$ is an increasing concave funct…
A theory is presented for the effective charge of colloidal particles in suspensions containing multivalent counterions. It is shown that if colloids are sufficiently strongly charged, the number of condensed multivalent counterion can exceed the bare colloidal charge leading to charge reversal. Charge renormalization in suspensions with multivalent counterions depends on a subtle interplay between the solvation energies of the multivalent counterions in the bulk and near the colloidal surface. We find that the effective charge is {\it not} a monotonically decreasing function of the multivalen…
The ionic composition and pair correlations in fluid phases of realistically salt-free charged colloidal sphere suspensions are calculated in the primitive model. We obtain the number densities of all ionic species in suspension, including low-molecular weight microions, and colloidal macroions with acidic surface groups, from a self-consistent solution of a coupled physicochemical set of nonlinear algebraic equations and non-mean-field liquid integral equations. Here, we study suspensions of colloidal spheres with sulfonate or silanol surface groups, suspended in demineralized water that is s…
We study the time evolution of different Laponite suspensions from a low-viscosity ergodic state to a viscoelastic non-ergodic state over a wide range of volume fractions and salt contents. We find that the evolution of non-ergodicity parameter (Debye-Waller factor) splits into two branches for all the samples, which correspond to two distinct dynamically arrested states. At moderately high salt concentrations, on the other hand, a third and new nonergodic state appears that are different from the above two nonergodic states. Measurement of the conductivity of Laponite solutions in pure water …
In charge-stabilized colloidal suspensions, highly charged macroions, dressed by strongly correlated counterions, carry an effective charge that can be substantially reduced (renormalized) from the bare charge. Interactions between dressed macroions are screened by weakly correlated counterions and salt ions. Thermodynamic and structural properties of colloidal suspensions depend sensitively on the magnitudes of both the effective charge and the effective screening constant. Combining a charge renormalization theory of effective electrostatic interactions with Monte Carlo simulations of a one-…
Chiral symmetry breaking is ubiquitous in biological systems, from DNA to bacterial suspensions. A key unresolved problem is how chiral structures may spontaneously emerge from achiral interactions. We study a simple model of bacterial suspensions in three dimensions that effectively incorporates active motion and hydrodynamic interactions. We perform large-scale molecular dynamics simulations (up to $10^6$ particles) and describe stable (or long-lived metastable) collective states that exhibit chiral organization although the interactions are achiral. We elucidate under which conditions these…
We characterize the role of charge correlations in the adsorption of a short, rod-like anionic polyelectrolyte onto a similarly charged membrane. Our theory reveals two different mechanisms driving the like-charge polyelectrolyte-membrane complexation: in weakly charged membranes, repulsive polyelectrolyte-membrane interactions lead to the interfacial depletion and a parallel orientation of the polyelectrolyte with respect to the membrane; while in the intermediate membrane charge regime, the interfacial counterion excess gives rise to an attractive "salt-induced" image force. This furthermore…
Using super-heterodyne Doppler velocimetry with multiple scattering correction, we extend the opti-cally accessible range of concentrations in experiments on colloidal electro-kinetics. We here meas-ured the electro-phoretic mobility and the DC conductivity of aqueous charged sphere suspensions covering about three orders of magnitude in particle concentrations and transmissions as low as 40%. The extended concentration range for the first time allows the demonstration of a non-monotonic con-centration dependence of the mobility for a single particle species. Our observations reconcile previ-o…
The DNA duplex may be locally strongly bent in complexes with proteins, for example, with polymerases or in a nucleosome. At such bends, the DNA helix is locally in the non-canonical forms A (with a narrow major groove and a large amount of north sugars) or C (with a narrow minor groove and a large share of BII phosphates). To model the formation of such complexes by molecular dynamics methods, the force field is required to reproduce these conformational transitions for a naked DNA. We analyzed the available experimental data on the B-C and B-A transitions under the conditions easily implemen…
In this paper, ageing behavior of suspensions of laponite with varying salt concentration is investigated using rheological tools. It is observed that the ageing is accompanied by an increase in the complex viscosity. The succeeding creep experiments performed at various ages showed damped oscillations in the strain. The characteristic time-scale of the damped oscillations, retardation time, showed a prominent decrease with the age of the system. However, this dependence weakens with an increase in the salt concentration, which is known to change microstructure of the system from glass-like to…
