We propose a new mechanism to induce a novel one-magnon excitation by the electric component of light in cycloidal spin states, i.e. so called electromagnon process. We calculated optical spectra in the cycloidal spin structures as observed in multiferroic perovskite manganites RMnO3 where novel magnetic excitations induced by oscillating electric fields are observed. When symmetric spin-dependent electric polarizations are introduced, we have light absorptions at terahertz frequencies with one- and two-magnon excitations driven by the electric component of light. Our results show that some parts of optical spectra observed experimentally at terahertz frequencies are one-magnon excitation absorptions.
Temperature induced phase transition from cycloidal to collinear antiferromagnetism in multiferroic Bi$_{0.9}$Sm$_{0.1}$FeO$_3$ driven by $f$-$d$ induced magnetic anisotropy
We investigate the spin rotational structure of magnetic skyrmions in a tetragonal polar magnet VOSe2O5 via polarized small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). Spin polarization analysis of the scattered neutrons provides consistent evidence for the cycloidal spin modulation in all the incommensurate phases at zero and non-zero magnetic field along the c axis, including the triangular skyrmion-lattice phase. In the vicinity of the skyrmion phase, we performed extensive SANS measurements to unravel a field-induced incommensurate phase (IC-2 state). We discuss the possibility of anisotropic double-…
We show how complex modulated order can spontaneously emerge when magnetic interactions compete in a metal with polar lattice distortions. Combining neutron and resonant x-ray scattering with symmetry analysis, we reveal that the spin reorientation in Ca$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ is mediated by a magnetic cycloid whose eccentricity evolves smoothly but rapidly with temperature. We find the cycloid to be highly sensitive to magnetic fields, which appear to continuously generate higher harmonic modulations. Our results provide a unified picture of the rich magnetic phases of this correlated, multi-band pol…
The magnetoelectric coupling, i.e., cross-correlation between electric and magnetic orders, is a very desirable property to combine functionalities of materials for next-generation switchable devices. Multiferroics with spin-driven ferroelectricity presents such a mutual interaction concomitant with magneto- and electro-active excitations called electromagnons. TbMnO3 is a paradigmatic material in which two electromagnons have been observed in the cycloidal magnetic phase. However, their observation in TbMnO3 is restricted to the cycloidal spin phase and magnetic ground states that can support…
Coupled magnetic and ferroelectric domains in multiferroic Ni3V2O8
We have performed Raman scattering measurements on BiFeO3 nanoparticles and studied both magnetic and lattice modes. We reveal strong anomalies between 140 K and 200 K in the frequency of magnon and E(LO1), E(TO1) and A1(LO1) phonon modes. These anomalies are related to a surface expansion and are enhanced for nanoparticle sizes approaching the spin cycloidal length. These observations point out the strong interplay between the surface, the lattice, and the magnetism for sizes of BiFeO3 nanoparticles close to the cycloid periodicity.
We report a soft x-ray resonant magnetic scattering study of the spin configuration in multiferroic thin films of Co$_{0.975}$Ge$_{0.025}$Cr$_2$O$_4$ (Ge-CCO) and CoCr$_2$O$_4$ (CCO), under low- and high-magnetic fields, from 0.2 T up to 6.5 T. A characterization of Ge-CCO at a low magnetic field is performed and the results are compared to those of pure CCO. The ferrimagnetic phase transition temperature $T_C \approx 95$ K and the multiferroic transition temperature $T_S \approx 27$ K in Ge-CCO are comparable to those observed in CCO. In Ge-CCO, the ordering wave vector $\textit{(qq0)}$ obser…
Our studies evidence an anisotropic magnetic order below $T_N = 32$~K. Susceptibility data in small fields of about 1~T reveal an antiferromagnetic (AFM) order for $H \perp c$, whereas for $H \parallel c$ the data are reminiscent of a field-induced ferromagnetic (FM) structure. At low temperatures and for $H \perp c$, the field-dependent magnetization and AC susceptibility data evidence a metamagnetic transition at $H^+ = 5$~T, which is absent for $H \parallel c$. We assign this to a transition from a planar cycloidal spin structure at low fields to a planar fan-like arrangement above $H^+$. A…
A magnetic solid with weak spin frustration tends to adopt a noncollinear magnetic structure such as cycloidal structure below a certain temperature and a spin density wave (SDW) slightly above this temperature. The causes for these observa-tions were explored by studying the magnetic structures of BaYFeO4, which undergoes an SDW and a cycloidal phase transi-tion below 48 and 36 K, respectively, in terms of density func-tional theory calculations. We show that an SDW structure aris-es from a superposition of two magnetic states of opposite chi-rality, an SDW state precedes a chiral magnetic st…
Dynamics of Multiferroic Domain Wall in Spin-Cycloidal Ferroelectric DyMnO$_{3}$
Magnetic Excitations in the Multiferroic Néel-type Skyrmion Host GaV$_4$S$_8$
MnSb$_{2}$O$_{6}$ is based on the structural chiral $P$321 space group #150 where the magnetic Mn$^{2+}$ moments ($S=5/2$, $L\approx 0$) order antiferromagnetically at $T_\mathrm{N}=12$ K. Unlike the related iron based langasite (Ba$_3$NbFe$_3$Si$_2$O$_{14}$) where the low temperature magnetism is based on a proper helix characterized by a time-even pseudoscalar `magnetic' chirality, the Mn$^{2+}$ ions in MnSb$_{2}$O$_{6}$ order with a cycloidal structure at low temperatures, described instead by a time-even vector `magnetic' polarity. A tilted cycloidal structure has been found [M. Kinoshita …
The microscopic conditions for the emergence of nonreciprocal magnon excitations in noncentrosymmetric magnets are theoretically investigated. We show that asymmetric magnon excitations appear when a bond magnetic toroidal dipole becomes active, which is defined as a parallel component between the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya vector and the averaged spin moments at the ends of the bonds. Depending on magnetic structures accompanying the bond magnetic toroidal dipoles, the higher-rank magnetic toroidal multipoles can also be activated in a magnetic cluster, which describes various angle dependences of…
We compare the ground-state features of alternating ferrimagnetic chains $(1/2, S)$ with $S=1,3/2,2,5/2$ in a magnetic field and the corresponding Holstein-Primakoff bosonic models up to order $\sqrt{s/S}$, with $s=1/2$, considering the fully polarized magnetization as the boson vacuum. {The single-particle Hamiltonian is a Rice-Mele model with uniform hopping and modified boundaries, while the interactions have a correlated (density-dependent) hopping term and magnon-magnon repulsion.} The magnon-magnon repulsion increases the many-magnon energy and the density-dependent hopping decreases the…

In spite of flourishing studies on the topology of spin waves, a generic framework to classify and compute magnon band topology in non-collinear magnets is still missing. In this work we provide such a theory framework, by mapping an arbitrary linear spin wave into a local free-fermion Hamiltonian with exactly the same spectrum, symmetry implementation and band topology, which allows for a full classification and calculation on any topological properties of magnon bands. We apply this fermionization approach to honeycomb Kitaev magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$, and show the existence of topologically prote…
In three-dimensional (3D) quantum magnets, magnonic Weyl points (WPs) featuring linear band crossing of two non-degenerate magnon branches can emerge in certain lattice geometry when time-reversal symmetry is broken macroscopically. Unfortunately, there are very limited 3D quantum magnets that host magnonic WPs, and they are yet to be observed experimentally because the intrinsic perturbative interactions that break time-reversal symmetry macroscopically can be very negligible. Here, we present an alternative means via photo-irradiation, in which magnonic WPs can emerge in 3D quantum magnets w…
Recent progress in the field of multiferroics led to the discovery of many new materials in which ferroelectricity is induced by cycloidal spiral orders. The direction of the electric polarization is typically constrained by spin anisotropies and magnetic field. Here, we report that the mixed rare-earth manganite, Gd$_{0.5}$Dy$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$, exhibits a spontaneous electric polarization along a general direction in the crystallographic ac-plane, which is suppressed below 10 K but re-emerges in an applied magnetic field. Neutron diffraction measurements show that the polarization direction resu…
We study periodically driven pure Kitaev model and ferromagnetic phase of the Kitaev-Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice by off-resonant linearly and circularly-polarized lights at zero magnetic field. Using a combination of linear spin wave and Floquet theories, we show that the effective time-independent Hamiltonians in the off-resonant regime map onto the corresponding anisotropic static spin model, plus a tunable photoinduced magnetic field along the $[111]$ direction, which precipitates Floquet topological magnons and chiral magnon edge modes. They are tunable by the light amplitude…
We study the magnon bands of twisted bilayer honeycomb quantum magnets using linear spin wave theory. Although the interlayer coupling can be ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic, we keep the intralayer one ferromagnetic to avoid possible frustration. For the interlayer ferromagnetic case, we find the magnon bands have similar features with the corresponding electronic energy spectrums. Although the linear dispersions near the Dirac points are preserved in the magnon bands of twisted bilayer magnets, their slopes are graduately reduced with the decrease of the twist angles. On the other hand, th…
Quantum Dynamics of Multiferroic Helimagnets: a Schwinger-Boson Approach
We theoretically study the interaction of magnons, quanta of spin waves, and a domain wall in a one-dimensional easy-axis antiferromagnet in the presence of an external magnetic field applied along the easy axis. To this end, we begin by obtaining the exact solution for spin waves in the background of a domain wall magnetized by an external field. The finite magnetization inside the domain wall is shown to give rise to reflection of magnons scattering off the domain wall, deviating from the well-known result of reflection-free magnons in the absence of a magnetic field. For practical applicati…
In experiments and applications usually the spin magnetic moment of magnons is considered. In this Paper we identify an additional degree of freedom of magnons: an \emph{orbital} magnetic moment brought about by spin-orbit coupling. Our microscopic theory uncovers that spin magnetization $\vec{M}^\mathrm{S}$ and orbital magnetization $\vec{M}^\mathrm{O}$ are independent quantities. They are not necessarily collinear; thus, even when the total spin moment is compensated due to antiferromagnetism ($\vec{M}^\mathrm{S} = \vec{0}$), $\vec{M}^\mathrm{O}$ may be nonzero. This scenario of orbital weak …
Achieving control over magnon spin currents in insulating magnets - where dissipation due to Joule heating is highly suppressed - is an active area of research that could lead to energy-efficient spintronics applications. However, magnon spin currents supported by conventional systems with uniform magnetic order have proven hard to control. An alternative approach that relies on topologically protected magnonic edge states of spatially periodic magnetic textures has recently emerged. A prime example of such textures is the ferromagnetic skyrmion crystal which hosts chiral edge states providing…
We use the spin functional renormalization group recently developed by two of us [J. Krieg and P. Kopietz, Phys. Rev. B $\bf{99}$, 060403(R) (2019)] to calculate the magnetization $M ( H , T )$ and the damping of magnons due to classical longitudinal fluctuations of quantum Heisenberg ferromagnets. In order to guarantee that for vanishing magnetic field $H \rightarrow 0$ the magnon spectrum is gapless when the spin rotational invariance is spontaneously broken, we use a Ward identity to express the magnon self-energy in terms of the magnetization. In two dimensions our approach correctly predi…
In this work, we report the theoretical possibility of generating magnon polaron excitations through a space-varying magnetic field. The spatial dependence of the magnetic field in the Zeeman interaction gives rise to a magnon-phonon coupling when a magnetic field gradient is applied, and such a coupling depends directly on the strength of the gradient. It is also predicted that the direction of the magnetic field gradient allows control over which phonon polarization couples to the magnons in the material. Here we develop the calculations of the magnon-phonon coupling for an arbitrary (anti)f…
We develop a comprehensive theory of twisted bilayer magnetism. Starting from the first-principles calculations of two-dimensional honeycomb magnet CrI3, we construct the generic spin models that represent a broad class of twisted bilayer magnetic systems. Using Monte-Carlo method, we discover a variety of non-collinear magnetic orders and topological magnons that have been overlooked in the previous theoretical and experimental studies. As a function of the twist angle, the collinear magnetic order undergoes the phase transitions to the non-collinear order and the magnetic domain phase. In th…
We theoretically study the nonlinear magnetic resonance driven by intense laser or electromagnetic wave in a fully polarized frustrated magnet near a less-visible spin-nematic ordered phase. In general, both magnons and magnon pairs (two-magnon bound state) appear as the low-energy excitation in the saturated state of spin-nematic magnets. Their excitation energies are usually in terahertz (THz) or gigahertz range. Magnon pairs with angular momentum 2$\hbar$ can be excited by the simultaneous absorption of two photons, and such multi-photon processes occur if the applied THz laser is strong en…
