Mid-infrared spectra of 65 T Tauri stars (TTS) taken with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on board the Spitzer Space Telescope are modeled using dust at two temperatures to probe the radial variation in dust composition in the uppermost layers of protoplanetary disks. Most spectra indicating crystalline silicates require Mg-rich minerals and silica, but a few suggest otherwise. Spectra indicating abundant enstatite at higher temperatures also require crystalline silicates at temperatures lower than those required for spectra showing high abundance of other crystalline silicates. A few spectra show 10 micron complexes of very small equivalent width. They are fit well using abundant crystalline silicates but very few large grains, inconsistent with the expectation that low peak-to-continuum ratio of the 10 micron complex always indicates grain growth. Most spectra in our sample are fit well without using the opacities of large crystalline silicate grains. If large grains grow by agglomeration of submicron grains of all dust types, the amorphous silicate components of these aggregates must typically be more abundant than the crystalline silicate components. Crystalline silicate abundances correlate positively with other such abundances, suggesting that crystalline silicates are processed directly from amorphous silicates and that neither forsterite, enstatite, nor silica are intermediate steps when producing either of the other two. Disks with more dust settling typically have greater crystalline abundances. Large-grain abundance is somewhat correlated with greater settling of disks. The lack of strong correlation is interpreted to mean that settling of large grains is sensitive to individual disk properties. Lower-mass stars have higher abundances of large grains in their inner regions.
We present a 8.4 GHz VLA survey of 50 optical counterparts to 46 ROSAT All-Sky survey (RASS) X-ray sources south of the Taurus-Auriga star-forming region. This survey detected 3 sources with a sensitivity limit of ~ 0.12 mJy. Merging our sample with other radio observations of sources in and around Taurus-Auriga, we find scarce radio emission among RASS sources south of the Taurus-Auriga molecular clouds. Our data support the evidence that these sources are older than weak-lined T Tauri stars, most of them probably being close to the ZAMS.
We describe near-IR imaging data for a sample of 23 class I sources in the Taurus-Auriga dark clouds. Combining our data with previous photometry, we detect brightness variations of 0.1-0.5 mag in many sources. The near-IR morphologies are consistent with mm continuum measurements. Most (60%) of the sample are true protostars; the rest may be objects in transition between class I and class II, T Tauri stars with edge-on disks, or heavily reddened T Tauri stars.
We report on a systematic search for X-ray emission from pre-main sequence and young main sequence stars in the Taurus-Auriga-Perseus region. Our stellar sample consists of all T Tauri stars from the Taurus-Auriga region, and all late-type stars from the Pleiades and Hyades clusters which have been observed by the ROSAT PSPC in pointed observations. We present the X-ray parameters for all observed stars in tables, and study the connection between coronal X-ray activity and stellar parameters for different subgroups of our sample. In particular we compile X-ray luminosity functions (XLF), and d…
We review the history and structure of star formation in the Taurus-Auriga dark clouds. Our discussion includes a summary of the macroscopic cloud properties, the population of single and binary pre-main sequence stars, the properties of jets and outflows, and detailed summaries of selected individual objects. We include comprehensive tables of dark clouds, young stars, and jets in the clouds.
X-ray luminosity functions (XLF) are frequently used to assess the properties of the X-ray emission from a given sample of stars, and particularly important for a comparison of different groups of stars. I present the results from a detailed analysis of the XLF of pre-main sequence T Tauri Stars in Taurus-Auriga and young main-sequence objects (represented by the Pleiades and Hyades cluster). The study is based on the ROSAT public archive. Various possible biases related to the sample selection are described, and their influence on the luminosity distributions is discussed.
(abridged) Star formation in the Taurus--Auriga (TA) molecular clouds is producing binary-rich aggregates containing at most a few dozen systems within a region spanning one pc without massive stars. This environment is very different to another well-studied star-forming event which produced the Orion Nebula cluster (ONC). Differences between these two environments have been found. Notably, the ONC has a significantly smaller binary proportion but a significantly larger number of isolated brown dwarfs per star than TA. This paper focusses on the dynamical evolution of the TA aggregates and the…
Aims: This is the first paper in a series dedicated to investigating the kinematic properties of nearby associations of young stellar objects. Here we study the Taurus-Auriga association, with the primary objective of deriving kinematic parallaxes for individual members of this low-mass star-forming region. Methods: We took advantage of a recently published catalog of proper motions for pre-main sequence stars, which we supplemented with radial velocities from various sources found in the CDS databases. We searched for stars of the Taurus-Auriga region that share the same space velocity, using…
We present results of a systematic search for X-ray flares on young stars observed during ROSAT PSPC observations of the Taurus-Auriga-Perseus region. All pointed PSPC observations currently available from the ROSAT Public Data Archive with known T Tauri stars, Pleiads, or Hyads in the field are analyzed in order to study the evolution of coronal activity. 38 large flares can be attributed to late-type stars. A flare rate is derived for the different stellar samples making use of the flare duration and the observing time. We investigate the influence of stellar parameters such as age, rotation…
We monitored the light variations of 22 weak-line T Tauri stars (WTTS) discovered among the X-ray sources in the field of the Taurus-Auriga cloud. The photometric variability of 12 out of these WTTS samples is confirmed. They are all proved to be in periodic variations. By using the methods of the Phase Dispersion Minimization (PDM) and Fourier analysis, the rotational periods of these stars were determined based on this observation. Most of them are found to be shorter than one day. This gives further evidences for the spin up of solar-type stars as predicted by models of angular momentum evo…
We present proper motions of 72 T Tauri stars located in the central region of Taurus-Auriga. These proper motions are taken from a new proper motion catalogue called STARNET. Our sample comprises 17 classical T Tauri stars and 55 weak-line T Tauri stars, most of the latter discovered by ROSAT. 53 stars had no proper motion measurement before. Kinematically, 62 of these stars are members of the association. A velocity dispersion of less than 2-3 km/s is found which is dominated by the errors of the proper motions. This velocity dispersion correlates with a spread in distances. Furthermore we p…
This paper describes the first optical spectroscopic survey of class I sources (also known as embedded sources and protostars) in the Taurus-Auriga dark cloud. We detect 10 of the 24 known class I sources in the cloud at 5500-9000 A. All detected class I sources have strong H-alpha emission; most also have strong [O I] and [S II] emission. These data - together with high quality optical spectra of T Tauri stars in the Taurus-Auriga cloud - demonstrate that forbidden emission lines are stronger and more common in class I sources than in T Tauri stars. Our results also provide a clear discrimina…
In a recent study, individual parallaxes were determined for many stars of the Taurus-Auriga T association that are members of the same moving group. We use these new parallaxes to re-address the issue of the relationship between classical T Tauri stars (CTTSs) and weak-emission line T Tauri stars (WTTSs). With the available spectroscopic and photometric information for 72 individual stars or stellar systems among the Taurus-Auriga objects with known parallaxes, we derived reliable photospheric luminosities, mainly from the Ic magnitude of these objects. We then studied the mass and age distri…
Accurate measurements of lithium abundances in young low-mass stars provide an independent and reliable age diagnostics. Previous studies of nearby star forming regions have identified significant numbers of Li-depleted stars, often at levels inconsistent with the ages indicated by their luminosity. We aim at a new and accurate analysis of Li abundances in a sample of ~100 pre-main sequence stars in Taurus-Auriga using a homogeneous and updated set of stellar parameters and model atmospheres appropriate for the spectral types of the sample stars. We compute Li abundances using published values o…
We present results of intermediate resolution spectroscopy of 131 optical counterparts to 115 ROSAT All-Sky Survey X-ray sources south of the Taurus-Auriga dark cloud complex. These objects have been selected as candidate young stars from a total of 1084 ROSAT sources in a about 300 square degree area. We identify 30 objects as low-mass PMS stars on the basis of the Li 6708 doublet in their spectrum, a signature of their young age. All these stars have a spectral type later than F7 and show spectral characteristics typical of weak-line and post-T Tauri stars. The presence of young objects seve…
The Taurus-Auriga star-forming complex hosts the only population of T Tauri stars in which an anticorrelation of X-ray activity and rotation period has been observed. We have used XMM-Newton's European Photon Imaging Cameras to perform the most sensitive survey to date of X-ray emission (0.3-10 keV) from young stars in Taurus-Auriga and investigate the dependences of X-ray activity measures -- X-ray luminosity, Lx, its ratio with the stellar luminosity, Lx/Lstar, and the surface-averaged X-ray flux, Fxs -- on rotation period. We tested for differences in the distributions of Lx/Lstar of fast a…
Surface lithium abundance and rotation velocity can serve as powerful and mutually complementary diagnostics of interior structure of stars. So far, the processes responsible for the lithium depletion during pre-main sequence evolution are still poorly understood. We investigate whether a correlation exists between equivalent widths of Li (EW(Li)) and rotation period (P$_{rot}$) for Weak-line T Tauri stars (WTTSs). We find that rapidly rotating stars have lower EW(Li) and the fast burning of Li begins at the phase when star's P$_{rot}$ evolves towards 3 days among 0.9M$_\odot$ to 1.4M$_\odot$ …
In this paper we readdress the issue of the alignment of Classical T Tauri stars with the magnetic field in the Taurus-Auriga molecular cloud. Previous studies have claimed that the jet axis of active young stellar objects, projected in the plane of the sky, is aligned preferentially along the projected direction of the local magnetic field. We re-examine this issue in view of the numerous high angular resolution images of circumstellar disks and micro-jets now available. The images show that T Tauri stars as a group are oriented randomly with respect to the local magnetic field, contrary to p…
To understand the formation of stellar groups, one must first document carefully the birth pattern within real clusters and associations. In this study of Taurus-Auriga, we combine pre-main-sequence ages from our own evolutionary tracks with stellar positions from observational surveys. Aided by the extensive, millimeter data on the molecular clouds, we develop a picture of the region's history. Star formation began, at a relatively low level and in a spatially diffuse manner, at least 10 Myr in the past. Within the last few million years, new stars have been produced at an accelerating rate, …
We present high resolution optical spectra obtained with the HIRES spectrograph on the Keck I telescope of low mass T Tauri stars and brown dwarfs (LMTTs) in Taurus-Auriga. Of particular interest is the previously classified "continuum T Tauri star" GM Tau, which has a spectral type of M6.5 and a mass just below the stellar/substellar boundary. None of the LMTTs in Taurus are rapidly rotating (vsini < 30 km/s), unlike low mass objects in Orion. Many of the slowly rotating, non-accreting stars and brown dwarfs exhibit prominent H-alpha emission (EWs of 3 - 36 A), indicative of active chromosphe…
We present a sensitive, multiwavelength submillimeter continuum survey of 153 young stellar objects in the Taurus-Auriga star formation region. The submillimeter detection rate is 61% to a completeness limit of ~10 mJy (3-sigma) at 850 microns. The inferred circumstellar disk masses are log-normally distributed with a mean mass of ~0.005 solar masses and a large dispersion (0.5 dex). Roughly one third of the submillimeter sources have disk masses larger than the minimal nebula from which the solar system formed. The median disk to star mass ratio is 0.5%. The empirical behavior of the submilli…
[abridged] We present high resolution optical spectra of stars in Taurus-Auriga whose circumstellar environment suggests that they are less evolved than optically revealed T Tauri stars. Many of the stars are seen only via scattered light. These spectra are used to search for differences between stars which power Herbig-Haro flows and stars which do not, and to reassess the evolutionary state of so-called protostars (Class I stars) relative to optically revealed T Tauri stars (Class II stars). The stellar mass distribution of Class I stars is similar to that of Class II stars and includes 3 Cl…
We present polarimetric observations of 14 pre-main-sequence (PMS) binaries located in the Taurus, Auriga, and Orion star forming regions. The majority of the average observed polarizations are below 0.5%, and none are above 0.9%. After removal of estimates of the interstellar polarization, about half the binaries have an intrinsic polarization above 0.5%, even though most of them do not present other evidences for the presence of circumstellar dust. Various tests reveal that 77% of the PMS binaries have or possibly have a variable polarization. LkCa3, Par1540, and Par2494 present detectable p…
We report the results of a spectroscopic survey of 20 close T Tauri binaries in the Taurus-Auriga dark cloud where the separations between primaries and their secondaries are less than the typical size of a circumstellar disk around a young star. Analysis of low-resolution and medium-resolution STIS spectra yields the stellar luminosities, reddenings, ages, masses, mass accretion rates, IR excesses, and emission line luminosities for each star in each pair. We examine the ability of IR color excesses, H-alpha equivalent widths, [O I] emission, and veiling to distinguish between weak emission a…
We discuss wide-field near-IR imaging of the NGC1333, L1448, L1455 and B1 star forming regions in Perseus. The observations have been extracted from a much larger narrow-band imaging survey of the Taurus-Auriga-Perseus complex. These H2 2.12 micron observations are complemented by broad-band K imaging, mid-IR imaging and photometry from the Spitzer Space Telescope, and published submillimetre CO J=3-2 maps of high-velocity molecular outflows. We detect and label 85 H2 features and associate these with 26 molecular outflows. Three are parsec-scale flows, with a mean flow lobe length exceeding 1…
We have carried out an extensive search for X-ray emission from young, very low-mass objects near and beyond the substellar limit, making use of archived ROSAT PSPC and HRI observations pointed at Brown Dwarfs and Brown Dwarf candidates in the young sigma Orionis and Taurus-Auriga associations. In sigma Ori we identify three Brown Dwarf candidates with X-ray sources; in Taurus-Auriga we add one further X-ray detection of a Brown Dwarf to the list published earlier. We combine this data with all previously X-ray detected Brown Dwarfs and Brown Dwarf candidates in young stellar associations and …
The unusual spectral energy distribution (SED) of the classical T Tauri star GM Aurigae provides evidence for the presence of an inner disc hole extending to several au. Using a combination of hydrodynamical simulations and Monte Carlo radiative transport, we investigate whether the observed SED is consistent with the inner hole being created and maintained by an orbiting planet. We show that an ~ 2 M_Jupiter planet, orbiting at 2.5 au in a disc with mass 0.047 M_sun and radius 300 au, provides a good match both to the SED and to CO observations which constrain the velocity field in the disc. …
Differences have been reported between the X-ray emission of accreting and non-accreting stars. Some observations have suggested that accretion shocks could be responsible for part of the X-ray emission in Classical T Tauri stars (CTTS). We present high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy of nine pre-main sequence stars in order to test the proposed spectroscopic differences between accreting and non-accreting pre-main sequence stars. We use X-ray spectroscopy from the XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometers and the EPIC instruments. We interpret the spectra using optically thin thermal models w…
We present high resolution optical spectroscopy of three candidate members of the Taurus-Auriga star forming region. Based on the spectral type, the strength, profile and width of the H(alpha) line, the detected lithium at 6708 angstrom, the location of these objects in a H-R diagram and the comparison with similar objects belonging to young stellar associations, we determine that they are bona fide members of the SFR, with about ~3 Myr, have masses at or below the substellar limit and, at least in one case, there is active accretion from a circum(sub)stellar disk. This result suggests that hi…
We present a one-dimensional model of the formation and viscous evolution of protoplanetary disks. The formation of the early disk is modeled as the result of the gravitational collapse of an isothermal molecular cloud. The disk's viscous evolution is integrated according to two parameterizations of turbulence: The classical $α$ representation and a $β$ parameterization, representative of non-linear turbulence driven by the keplerian shear. We apply the model to DM Tau and GM Aur, two classical T-Tauri stars with relatively well-characterized disks, retrieving the evolution of their surface de…
We present a high dispersion optical spectrum of St 34 and identify the system as a spectroscopic binary with components of similar luminosity and temperature (both M3+/-0.5). Based on kinematics, signatures of accretion, and location on an H-R diagram, we conclude that St 34 is a classical T Tauri star belonging to the Taurus-Auriga T Association. Surprisingly, however, neither component of the binary shows LiI 6708 A, absorption, the most universally accepted criterion for establishing stellar youth. In this uniquely known instance, the accretion disk appears to have survived longer than the…
We characterize the crystalline silicate content and spatial distribution of small dust grains in a large sample of protoplanetary disks in the Taurus-Auriga young cluster, using Spitzer Space Telescope mid-infrared spectra. In turn we use the results to analyze the evolution of structure and composition of these 1-2 Myr-old disks around Solar- and later-type young stars, and test the standard models of dust processing which result in the conversion of originally amorphous dust into minerals. We find strong evidence of evolution of the dust crystalline mass fraction in parallel with that of th…
We have obtained the first measures of the mass accretion rates on stars of the Trapezium Cluster. They appear systematically lower than those of similar stars in the Taurus-Auriga association. Together with premature disk evaporation, dramatically revealed by the HST images of the Orion proplyds, this result suggests that low mass stars in a rich cluster may be ``dwarfed'' by the influence of nearby OB stars. This feedback mechanism affects the IMF, producing an excess of low mass stars and brown dwarfs. The observed frequency of low mass objects in Orion vs. Taurus seems to confirm this scen…
We present a drift scan survey covering a ~5 deg by 50 deg region toward the southern portion of the Taurus-Auriga molecular cloud. Data taken in the B,R,I filters with the Quest-2 camera on the Palomar 48-inch telescope were combined with 2MASS near-infrared photometry to select candidate young stars. Follow-up optical spectroscopy of 190 candidates led to identification of 42 new low mass pre-main sequence stars with spectral types M4-M8, of which approximately half exhibit surface gravity signatures similar to known Taurus stars while the other half exhibit surface gravity signatures simila…
We highlight two recent studies of circumstellar disks in the Taurus and Orion star forming regions. Using the JCMT and CSO, we measure disk fluxes in Taurus over a wide range of submillimeter wavelengths and determine the frequency dependence of the dust opacity. We find clear evidence for a systematic change in its behavior with time, most readily explained by grain growth. Using the SMA, we observed the protoplanetary disks (proplyds) in the Orion Trapezium cluster. The combination of high resolution, high frequency, and high sensitivity that this instrument provides made it possible to res…
We present observations of Taurus-Auriga Class I/II protostars obtained with the Spitzer InfraRed Spectrograph. Detailed spectral fits to the 6 and 15 micron features are made, using publicly-available laboratory data, to constrain the molecular composition, abundances, and levels of thermal processing along the lines of sight. We provide an inventory of the molecular environments observed, which have an average composition dominated by water ice with ~12% CO_2 (abundance relative to H_2O), >~2-9% CH_3OH, <~14% NH_3, ~4% CH_4, ~2% H_2CO, ~0.6% HCOOH, and ~0.5% SO_2. We find CO_2/H_2O ratios ne…
We analyze the spatial distributions of young stars in Taurus-Auriga and Upper Sco as determined from the two-point correlation function (i.e. the mean surface density of neighbors). The corresponding power-law fits allow us to determine the fractal dimensions of each association's spatial distribution, measure the stellar velocity dispersions, and distinguish between the bound binary population and chance alignments of members. We find that the fractal dimension of Taurus is D~1.05, consistent with its filamentary structure. The fractal dimension of Upper Sco may be even shallower (D~0.7), bu…
We have carried out a deep (t=30000s) x-ray search of the eastern portion of the L1495 cloud centered on the well known weak line T Tauri star (WTTS) V410 Tau using the ROSAT PSPC. This deep exposure enabled a search for candidate pre-main sequence (PMS) objects in this cloud to a limit 20 times more sensitive than that typical of the fields examined with the Einstein searches. Despite assertions that the PMS population in Taurus-Auriga is nearly completely known, this x-ray survey revealed 8 new PMS objects in a region 50' in diameter, as compared to a previously known stellar population of 1…
The frequency of low-mass pre-main sequence binary systems is significantly lower in the Trapezium Cluster than in Taurus-Auriga. We investigate if this difference can be explained through stellar encounters in dense clusters. To this effect, a range of possible models of the well observed Trapezium Cluster are calculated using Aarseth's direct N-body code, which treats binaries accurately. The results are confronted with observational constraints. The range of models include clusters in virial equilibrium, expanding clusters as a result of instantaneous mass loss, as well as collapsing cluste…
We present new multiwavelength submillimeter continuum measurements of the circumstellar dust around 48 young stars in the $ρ$ Ophiuchus dark clouds. Supplemented with previous 1.3 mm observations of an additional 99 objects from the literature, the statistical distributions of disk masses and submillimeter colors are calculated and compared to those in the Taurus-Auriga region. These basic submillimeter properties of young stellar objects in both environments are shown to be essentially identical. As with their Taurus counterparts, the $ρ$ Oph circumstellar dust properties are shown to evolve…
We present millimeter-wave continuum images of four wide (separations 210-800 AU) young stellar binary systems in the Taurus-Auriga star-forming region. For all four sources, the resolution of our observations is sufficient to determine the mm emission from each of the components. In all four systems, the primary star's disk has stronger millimeter emission than the secondary and in three of the four, the secondary is undetected; this is consistent with predictions of recent models of binary formation by fragmentation. The primaries' circumstellar disk masses inferred from these observations a…
Previous models of dust growth in protoplanetary disks considered either uniformly laminar or turbulent disks. This Letter explores how dust growth occurs in a layered protoplanetary disk in which the magnetorotational instability generates turbulence only in the surface layers of a disk. Two cases are considered: a completely laminar dead zone and a dead zone in which turbulence is ``stirred up'' from the MRI acting above. It is found that dust is depleted from high altitudes in layered disks faster than in those cases of a uniformly laminar or turblent disks. This is a result of the accelera…
We study the interpretation of the mean surface density of stellar companions as a function of separation (or the two point correlation function of stars) in star-forming regions. First, we consider the form of the functions for various simple stellar distributions (binaries, global density profiles, clusters, and fractals) and the effects of survey boundaries. Following this, we study the dependencies of the separation at which a transition from the binary to the large-scale clustering regime occurs. Larson (1995) found that the mean surface density of companions follows different power-law f…
Recent analysis of the decay products of short-lived radiounclides (SLRs) in meteorites, in particular the confirmation of the presence of live 60Fe in the early Solar System, provides unambiguous evidence that the Sun and Solar System formed near a massive star. We consider the question of the formation of low-mass stars in environments near massive stars, presenting a scenario for the evolution of a star and its disk around the periphery of an expanding H II region. The stages in this scenario begin with compression of molecular gas around the edge of an H II region, continue as forming star…
In this Letter we present a theoretical scenario to explain the steep correlation between disk accretion rates and stellar masses observed in pre-main sequence stars. We show that the correlations and spread observed in the two best studied regions, rho-Ophiuchus and Taurus, can be reproduced by a simple model of single star formation from a rotating collapsing core and the viscous evolution of the circumstellar disk. In this model, the rate of rotation of the parent core sets the value of the `centrifugal radius' within which the infalling matter is loaded onto the surface of the disk. As a c…
We investigate the apparent discrepancy between gas and dust outer radii derived from millimeter observations of protoplanetary disks. Using 230 and 345 GHz continuum and CO J=3-2 data from the Submillimeter Array for four nearby disk systems (HD 163296, TW Hydrae, GM Aurigae, and MWC 480), we examine models of circumstellar disk structure and the effects of their treatment of the outer disk edge. We show that for these disks, models described by power laws in surface density and temperature that are truncated at an outer radius are incapable of reproducing both the gas and dust emission simul…
We have used the high sensitivity and resolution of the IRAM interferometer to produce sub-arcsecond 12CO 2-1 images of 9 protoplanetary disks surrounding T Tauri stars in the Taurus-Auriga cloud (7 singles and 2 binaries). The images demonstrate the disks are in Keplerian rotation around their central stars. Using the least square fit method described in Guilloteau and Dutrey (1998), we derive the disk properties, in particular its inclination angle and rotation velocity, hence the dynamical mass. Since the disk mass is usually small, this is a direct measurement of the stellar mass. Typicall…
We investigate the observational signatures of a straightforward evolutionary scenario for protoplanetary disks in which the disk mass of small (50 micron) particles decreases homologously with time, but the disk structure and stellar parameters do not change. Our goal is to identify optimal infrared spectral indicators of the existence of disks, their structure, and mass evolution that may be tested with the upcoming SIRTF mission. We present simulated spectral energy distributions and colors over a wide range of masses. The SED is most sensitive to disk mass in the far-IR and longer waveleng…
(abridged) Our project endeavors to obtain a robust view of multiplicity among embedded Class I and Flat Spectrum protostars in a wide array of nearby molecular clouds to disentangle ``universal'' from cloud-dependent processes. We have used near-infrared adaptive optics observations at the VLT through the H, Ks and L' filters to search for tight companions to 45 Class I and Flat Spectrum protostars located in 4 different molecular clouds (Taurus-Auriga, Ophiuchus, Serpens and L1641 in Orion). We complemented these observations with published high-resolution surveys of 13 additional objects in…
