The golden code is a full-rate full-diversity space-time code for two transmit antennas that has a maximal coding gain. Because each codeword conveys four information symbols from an M-ary quadrature-amplitude modulation alphabet, the complexity of an exhaustive search decoder is proportional to M^2. In this paper we present a new fast algorithm for maximum-likelihood decoding of the golden code that has a worst-case complexity of only O(2M^2.5). We also present an efficient implementation of the fast decoder that exhibits a low average complexity. Finally, in contrast to the overlaid Alamouti codes, which lose their fast decodability property on time-varying channels, we show that the golden code is fast decodable on both quasistatic and rapid time-varying channels.
This paper presents a low-ML-decoding-complexity, full-rate, full-diversity space-time block code (STBC) for a 2 transmit antenna, 2 receive antenna multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, with coding gain equal to that of the best and well known Golden code for any QAM constellation. Recently, two codes have been proposed (by Paredes, Gershman and Alkhansari and by Sezginer and Sari), which enjoy a lower decoding complexity relative to the Golden code, but have lesser coding gain. The $2\times 2$ STBC presented in this paper has lesser decoding complexity for non-square QAM constellatio…
The Golden Code is a full-rate full-diversity space-time code, which achieves maximum coding gain for Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems with two transmit and two receive antennas. Since four information symbols taken from an M-QAM constellation are selected to construct one Golden Code codeword, a maximum likelihood decoder using sphere decoding has the worst-case complexity of O(M^4), when the Channel State Information (CSI) is available at the receiver. Previously, this worst-case complexity was reduced to O(M^(2.5)) without performance degradation. When the CSI is known by the t…
This paper (Part of the content of this manuscript has been accepted for presentation in IEEE Globecom 2008, to be held in New Orleans) deals with low maximum likelihood (ML) decoding complexity, full-rate and full-diversity space-time block codes (STBCs), which also offer large coding gain, for the 2 transmit antenna, 2 receive antenna ($2\times 2$) and the 4 transmit antenna, 2 receive antenna ($4\times 2$) MIMO systems. Presently, the best known STBC for the $2\times2$ system is the Golden code and that for the $4\times2$ system is the DjABBA code. Following the approach by Biglieri, Hong a…
After the pursuit of seventy years, the invention of polar codes indicates that we have found the first capacity-achieving coding with low complexity construction and decoding, which is the great breakthrough of the coding theory in the past two decades. In this survey, we retrospect the history of polar codes and summarize the advancement in the past ten years. First, the primary principle of channel polarization is investigated such that the basic construction, coding method, and classic successive cancellation (SC) decoding are reviewed. Second, in order to improve the performance of the fi…
In this paper, we present a concatenated coding scheme for a high rate $2\times 2$ multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system over slow fading channels. The inner code is the Golden code \cite{Golden05} and the outer code is a trellis code. Set partitioning of the Golden code is designed specifically to increase the minimum determinant. The branches of the outer trellis code are labeled with these partitions. Viterbi algorithm is applied for trellis decoding. In order to compute the branch metrics a lattice sphere decoder is used. The general framework for code optimization is given. The per…
We consider recursive decoding techniques for RM codes, their subcodes, and newly designed codes. For moderate lengths up to 512, we obtain near-optimum decoding with feasible complexity.
The maximum-likelihood decoding problem is known to be NP-hard for general linear and Reed-Solomon codes. In this paper, we introduce the notion of A-covered codes, that is, codes that can be decoded through a polynomial time algorithm A whose decoding bound is beyond the covering radius. For these codes, we show that the maximum-likelihood decoding problem is reachable in polynomial time in the code parameters. Focusing on bi- nary BCH codes, we were able to find several examples of A-covered codes, including two codes for which the maximum-likelihood decoding problem can be solved in quasi-q…
This dissertation focuses on fountain codes under maximum likelihood (ML) decoding. First LT codes are considered under a practical and widely used ML decoding algorithm known as inactivation decoding. Different analysis techniques are presented to characterize the decoding complexity. Next an upper bound to the probability of decoding failure of Raptor codes under ML decoding is provided. Then, the distance properties of an ensemble of fixed-rate Raptor codes with linear random outer codes are analyzed. Finally, a novel class of fountain codes is presented, which consists of a parallel concat…
Algebraic space-time coding allows for reliable data exchange across fading multiple-input multiple-output channels. A powerful technique for decoding space-time codes in Maximum-Likelihood (ML) decoding, but well-performing and widely-used codes such as the Golden code often suffer from high ML-decoding complexity. In this article, a recursive algorithm for decoding general algebraic space-time codes of arbitrary dimension is proposed, which reduces the worst-case decoding complexity from $O(|S|^{n^2})$ to $O(|S|^n)$.
K.A.S. Immink and J.H. Weber recently defined and studied a channel with both gain and offset mismatch, modelling the behaviour of charge-leakage in flash memory. They proposed a decoding measure for this channel based on minimising Pearson distance (a notion from cluster analysis). The paper derives a formula for maximum likelihood decoding for this channel, and also defines and justifies a notion of minimum distance of a code in this context.
In this letter, the SNR value at which the error performance curve of a soft decision maximum likelihood decoder reaches the slope corresponding to the code minimum distance is determined for a random code. Based on this value, referred to as the critical point, new insight about soft bounded distance decoding of random-like codes (and particularly Reed-Solomon codes) is provided.
An efficient decoder for the generalized first-order Reed-Muller code RM_q(1,m) is essential for the decoding of various block-coding schemes for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing with reduced peak-to-mean power ratio. We present an efficient and simple maximum-likelihood decoding algorithm for RM_q(1,m). It is shown that this algorithm has lower complexity than other previously known maximum-likelihood decoders for RM_q(1,m).
A new algorithm for efficient exact maximum likelihood decoding of polar codes (which may be CRC augmented), transmitted over the binary erasure channel, is presented. The algorithm applies a matrix triangulation process on a sparse polar code parity check matrix, followed by solving a small size linear system over GF(2). To implement the matrix triangulation, we apply belief propagation decoding type operations. We also indicate how this decoder can be implemented in parallel for low latency decoding. Numerical simulations are used to evaluate the performance and computational complexity of t…
A low-complexity tree search approach is presented that achieves the maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding performance of Reed-Muller (RM) codes. The proposed approach generates a bit-flipping tree that is traversed to find the ML decoding result by performing successive-cancellation decoding after each node visit. A depth-first search (DFS) and a breadth-first search (BFS) scheme are developed and a log-likelihood-ratio-based bit-flipping metric is utilized to avoid redundant node visits in the tree. Several enhancements to the proposed algorithm are presented to further reduce the number of node …
We formulate maximum likelihood (ML) channel decoding as a quadratic unconstraint binary optimization (QUBO) and simulate the decoding by the current commercial quantum annealing machine, D-Wave 2000Q. We prepared two implementations with Ising model formulations, generated from the generator matrix and the parity-check matrix respectively. We evaluated these implementations of ML decoding for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, analyzing the number of spins and connections and comparing the decoding performance with belief propagation (BP) decoding and brute-force ML decoding with classica…
The 3D MIMO code is a robust and efficient space-time coding scheme for the distributed MIMO broadcasting. However, it suffers from the high computational complexity if the optimal maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding is used. In this paper we first investigate the unique properties of the 3D MIMO code and consequently propose a simplified decoding algorithm without sacrificing the ML optimality. Analysis shows that the decoding complexity is reduced from O(M^8) to O(M^{4.5}) in quasi-static channels when M-ary square QAM constellation is used. Moreover, we propose an efficient implementation of t…
Based on the notion of supercodes, we propose a two-phase maximum-likelihood soft-decision decoding (tpMLSD) algorithm for binary linear block codes in this work. The first phase applies the Viterbi algorithm backwardly to a trellis derived from the parity-check matrix of the supercode of the linear block code. Using the information retained from the first phase, the second phase employs the priority-first search algorithm to the trellis corresponding to the linear block code itself, which guarantees finding the ML decision. Simulations on Reed-Muller codes show that the proposed two-phase sch…
In Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) systems, Maximum-Likelihood (ML) decoding is equivalent to finding the closest lattice point in an N-dimensional complex space. In general, this problem is known to be NP hard. In this paper, we propose a quasi-maximum likelihood algorithm based on Semi-Definite Programming (SDP). We introduce several SDP relaxation models for MIMO systems, with increasing complexity. We use interior-point methods for solving the models and obtain a near-ML performance with polynomial computational complexity. Lattice basis reduction is applied to further reduce the computati…
In this work we develop the maximum likelihood detection (MLD) algorithm for noncoherent amplitude shift keying (NCASK) systems in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. The developed algorithm was used to investigate the performance of the NCASK system with convolutional coding and soft-decision Viterbi decoding. Tight and simple upper bounds have been derived to describe the system performance; simulation results have shown that the derived upper bounds are within 0.1 dB of the simulated points.
A complexity-adaptive tree search algorithm is proposed for $\boldsymbol{G}_N$-coset codes that implements maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding by using a successive decoding schedule. The average complexity is close to that of the successive cancellation (SC) decoding for practical error rates when applied to polar codes and short Reed-Muller (RM) codes, e.g., block lengths up to $N=128$. By modifying the algorithm to limit the worst-case complexity, one obtains a near-ML decoder for longer RM codes and their subcodes. Unlike other bit-flip decoders, no outer code is needed to terminate decoding.…
We study the problem of characterizing when two memoryless binary asymmetric channels, described by their transition probabilities $(p,q)$ and $(p',q')$, are equivalent from the point of view of maximum likelihood decoding (MLD) when restricted to $n$-block binary codes. This equivalence of channels induces a partition (depending on $n$) on the space of parameters $(p,q)$ into regions associated with the equivalence classes. Explicit expressions for describing these regions, their number and areas are derived. Some perspectives of applications of our results to decoding problems are also prese…
CA-Polar codes have been selected for all control channel communications in 5G NR, but accurate, computationally feasible decoders are still subject to development. Here we report the performance of a recently proposed class of optimally precise Maximum Likelihood (ML) decoders, GRAND, that can be used with any block-code. As published theoretical results indicate that GRAND is computationally efficient for short-length, high-rate codes and 5G CA-Polar codes are in that class, here we consider GRAND's utility for decoding them. Simulation results indicate that decoding of 5G CA-Polar codes by …
Maximum Likelihood (ML) decoding of forward error correction codes is known to be optimally accurate, but is not used in practice as it proves too challenging to efficiently implement. Here we introduce a ML decoder called SGRAND, which is a development of a previously described hard detection ML decoder called GRAND, that fully avails of soft detection information and is suitable for use with any arbitrary high-rate, short-length block code. We assess SGRAND's performance on CRC-aided Polar (CA-Polar) codes, which will be used for all control channel communication in 5G NR, comparing its accu…
For an $n_t$ transmit, $n_r$ receive antenna system ($n_t \times n_r$ system), a {\it{full-rate}} space time block code (STBC) transmits $n_{min} = min(n_t,n_r)$ complex symbols per channel use. The well known Golden code is an example of a full-rate, full-diversity STBC for 2 transmit antennas. Its ML-decoding complexity is of the order of $M^{2.5}$ for square $M$-QAM. The Silver code for 2 transmit antennas has all the desirable properties of the Golden code except its coding gain, but offers lower ML-decoding complexity of the order of $M^2$. Importantly, the slight loss in coding gain is n…
In this paper upper and lower bounds on the probability of decoding failure under maximum likelihood decoding are derived for different (nonbinary) Raptor code constructions. In particular four different constructions are considered; (i) the standard Raptor code construction, (ii) a multi-edge type construction, (iii) a construction where the Raptor code is nonbinary but the generator matrix of the LT code has only binary entries, (iv) a combination of (ii) and (iii). The latter construction resembles the one employed by RaptorQ codes, which at the time of writing this article represents the s…
A low complexity, essentially-ML decoding technique for the Golden code and the 3 antenna Perfect code was introduced by Sirianunpiboon, Howard and Calderbank. Though no theoretical analysis of the decoder was given, the simulations showed that this decoding technique has almost maximum-likelihood (ML) performance. Inspired by this technique, in this paper we introduce two new low complexity decoders for Space-Time Block Codes (STBCs) - the Adaptive Conditional Zero-Forcing (ACZF) decoder and the ACZF decoder with successive interference cancellation (ACZF-SIC), which include as a special case…
In this paper, we propose an enhanced quasi-maximum likelihood (EQML) decoder for LDPC codes with short block lengths. After the failure of the conventional belief propagation (BP) decoding, the proposed EQML decoder selects unreliable variable nodes (VNs) and saturates their associated channel output values to generate a list of decoder input sequences. Each decoder input sequence in the list is then decoded by the conventional BP decoder to obtain the most likely codeword. To improve the accuracy of selecting unreliable VNs, we propose an edge-wise selection method based on the sign fluctuat…
Raptor codes have been widely used in many multimedia broadcast/multicast applications. However, our understanding of Raptor codes is still incomplete due to the insufficient amount of theoretical work on the performance analysis of Raptor codes, particularly under maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding, which provides an optimal benchmark on the system performance for the other decoding schemes to compare against. For the first time, this paper provides an upper bound and a lower bound, on the packet error performance of Raptor codes under ML decoding, which is measured by the probability that all …
We adapt a construction of Guth and Lubotzky [arXiv:1310.5555] to obtain a family of quantum LDPC codes with non-vanishing rate and minimum distance scaling like $n^{0.1}$ where $n$ is the number of physical qubits. Similarly as in [arXiv:1310.5555], our homological code family stems from hyperbolic 4-manifolds equipped with tessellations. The main novelty of this work is that we consider a regular tessellation consisting of hypercubes. We exploit this strong local structure to design and analyze an efficient decoding algorithm.
Maximum-likelihood decoding is one of the central algorithmic problems in coding theory. It has been known for over 25 years that maximum-likelihood decoding of general linear codes is NP-hard. Nevertheless, it was so far unknown whether maximum- likelihood decoding remains hard for any specific family of codes with nontrivial algebraic structure. In this paper, we prove that maximum-likelihood decoding is NP-hard for the family of Reed-Solomon codes. We moreover show that maximum-likelihood decoding of Reed-Solomon codes remains hard even with unlimited preprocessing, thereby strengthening a …
Guessing Random Additive Noise Decoding (GRAND) is a recently proposed universal Maximum Likelihood (ML) decoder for short-length and high-rate linear block-codes. Soft-GRAND (SGRAND) is a prominent soft-input GRAND variant, outperforming the other GRAND variants in decoding performance; nevertheless, SGRAND is not suitable for parallel hardware implementation. Ordered Reliability Bits-GRAND (ORBGRAND) is another soft-input GRAND variant that is suitable for parallel hardware implementation, however it has lower decoding performance than SGRAND. In this paper, we propose List-GRAND (LGRAND), a…
In this paper, network error control coding is studied for robust and efficient multicast in a directed acyclic network with imperfect links. The block network error control coding framework, BNEC, is presented and the capability of the scheme to correct a mixture of symbol errors and packet erasures and to detect symbol errors is studied. The idea of syndrome-based decoding and error detection is introduced for BNEC, which removes the effect of input data and hence decreases the complexity. Next, an efficient three-stage syndrome-based BNEC decoding scheme for network error correction is prop…
Repetition-based retransmission is used in Alamouti-modulation [1998] for $2\times 2$ MIMO systems. We propose to use instead of ordinary repetition so-called "scaled repetition" together with rotation. It is shown that the rotated and scaled Alamouti code has a hard-decision performance which is only slightly worse than that of the Golden code [2005], the best known $2\times 2$ space-time code. Decoding the Golden code requires an exhaustive search over all codewords, while our rotated and scaled Alamouti code can be decoded with an acceptable complexity however.
Surface codes are among the best candidates to ensure the fault-tolerance of a quantum computer. In order to avoid the accumulation of errors during a computation, it is crucial to have at our disposal a fast decoding algorithm to quickly identify and correct errors as soon as they occur. We propose a linear-time maximum likelihood decoder for surface codes over the quantum erasure channel. This decoding algorithm for dealing with qubit loss is optimal both in terms of performance and speed.
Recent work have shown that Reed-Muller (RM) codes achieve the erasure channel capacity. However, this performance is obtained with maximum-likelihood decoding which can be costly for practical applications. In this paper, we propose an encoding/decoding scheme for Reed-Muller codes on the packet erasure channel based on Plotkin construction. We present several improvements over the generic decoding. They allow, for a light cost, to compete with maximum-likelihood decoding performance, especially on high-rate codes, while significantly outperforming it in terms of speed.
A common problem on sequential-type decoding is that at the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) below the one corresponding to the cutoff rate, the average decoding complexity per information bit and the required stack size grow rapidly with the information length. In order to alleviate the problem in the maximum-likelihood sequential decoding algorithm (MLSDA), we propose to directly eliminate the top path whose end node is $Δ$-trellis-level prior to the farthest one among all nodes that have been expanded thus far by the sequential search. Following random coding argument, we analyze the early-elimi…
In this work, we consider efficient maximum-likelihood decoding of linear block codes for small-to-moderate block lengths. The presented approach is a branch-and-bound algorithm using the cutting-plane approach of Zhang and Siegel (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, 2012) for obtaining lower bounds. We have compared our proposed algorithm to the state-of-the-art commercial integer program solver CPLEX, and for all considered codes our approach is faster for both low and high signal-to-noise ratios. For instance, for the benchmark (155,64) Tanner code our algorithm is more than 11 times as fast as CPLEX …
For a class $\mathcal{C}$ of binary linear codes, we write $θ_{\mathcal{C}}\colon (0,1) \to [0,\frac{1}{2}]$ for the maximum-likelihood decoding threshold function of $\mathcal{C}$, the function whose value at $R \in (0,1)$ is the largest bit-error rate $p$ that codes in $\mathcal{C}$ can tolerate with a negligible probability of maximum-likelihood decoding error across a binary symmetric channel. We show that, if $\mathcal{C}$ is the class of cycle codes of graphs, then $θ_{\mathcal{C}}(R) \le \frac{(1-\sqrt{R})^2}{2(1+R)}$ for each $R$, and show that equality holds only when $R$ is asymptoti…
In this paper, the performance of quadratic residue (QR) codes of lengths within 100 is given and analyzed when the hard decoding, soft decoding, and linear programming decoding algorithms are utilized. We develop a simple method to estimate the soft decoding performance, which avoids extensive simulations. Also, a simulation-based algorithm is proposed to obtain the maximum likelihood decoding performance of QR codes of lengths within 100. Moreover, four important theorems are proposed to predict the performance of the hard decoding and the maximum-likelihood decoding in which they can explor…
Consider data transmission over a binary-input additive white Gaussian noise channel using a binary low-density parity-check code. We ask the following question: Given a decoder that takes log-likelihood ratios as input, does it help to modify the log-likelihood ratios before decoding? If we use an optimal decoder then it is clear that modifying the log-likelihoods cannot possibly help the decoder's performance, and so the answer is "no." However, for a suboptimal decoder like the linear programming decoder, the answer might be "yes": In this paper we prove that for certain interesting classes…
This paper considers the average complexity of maximum likelihood (ML) decoding of convolutional codes. ML decoding can be modeled as finding the most probable path taken through a Markov graph. Integrated with the Viterbi algorithm (VA), complexity reduction methods such as the sphere decoder often use the sum log likelihood (SLL) of a Markov path as a bound to disprove the optimality of other Markov path sets and to consequently avoid exhaustive path search. In this paper, it is shown that SLL-based optimality tests are inefficient if one fixes the coding memory and takes the codeword length…
An algorithm for exact maximum likelihood(ML) decoding on tail-biting trellises is presented, which exhibits very good average case behavior. An approximate variant is proposed, whose simulated performance is observed to be virtually indistinguishable from the exact one at all values of signal to noise ratio, and which effectively performs computations equivalent to at most two rounds on the tail-biting trellis. The approximate algorithm is analyzed, and the conditions under which its output is different from the ML output are deduced. The results of simulations on an AWGN channel for the exac…
A novel and efficient neural decoder algorithm is proposed. The proposed decoder is based on the neural Belief Propagation algorithm and the Automorphism Group. By combining neural belief propagation with permutations from the Automorphism Group we achieve near maximum likelihood performance for High Density Parity Check codes. Moreover, the proposed decoder significantly improves the decoding complexity, compared to our earlier work on the topic. We also investigate the training process and show how it can be accelerated. Simulations of the hessian and the condition number show why the learni…
Since the classical work of Berlekamp, McEliece and van Tilborg, it is well known that the problem of exact maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding of general linear codes is NP-hard. In this paper, we show that exact ML decoding of a classs of asymptotically good error correcting codes--expander codes, a special case of low density parity check (LDPC) codes--over binary symmetric channels (BSCs) is possible with an expected polynomial complexity. More precisely, for any bit-flipping probability, $p$, in a nontrivial range, there exists a rate region of non-zero support and a family of asymptotically…
We show that successive cancellation list decoding can be formulated exclusively using log-likelihood ratios. In addition to numerical stability, the log-likelihood ratio based formulation has useful properties which simplify the sorting step involved in successive cancellation list decoding. We propose a hardware architecture of the successive cancellation list decoder in the log-likelihood ratio domain which, compared to a log-likelihood domain implementation, requires less irregular and smaller memories. This simplification together with the gains in the metric sorter, lead to $56\%$ to $13…
Successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding algorithm is a powerful method that can help polar codes achieve excellent error-correcting performance. However, the current SCL algorithm and decoders are based on likelihood or log-likelihood forms, which render high hardware complexity. In this paper, we propose a log-likelihood-ratio (LLR)-based SCL (LLR-SCL) decoding algorithm, which only needs half the computation and storage complexity than the conventional one. Then, based on the proposed algorithm, we develop low-complexity VLSI architectures for LLR-SCL decoders. Analysis results show that…
Aiming at bridging the gap between the maximum likelihood decoding (MLD) and the suboptimal iterative decodings for short or medium length LDPC codes, we present a generalized ordered statistic decoding (OSD) in the form of syndrome decoding, to cascade with the belief propagation (BP) or enhanced min-sum decoding. The OSD is invoked only when the decoding failures are obtained for the preceded iterative decoding method. With respect to the existing OSD which is based on the accumulated log-likelihood ratio (LLR) metric, we extend the accumulative metric to the situation where the BP decoding …
We consider stability of scheduled multiaccess message communication with random coding and joint maximum-likehood decoding of messages. The framework we consider here models both the random message arrivals and the subsequent reliable communication by suitably combining techniques from queueing theory and information theory. The number of messages that may be scheduled for simultaneous transmission is limited to a given maximum value, and the channels from transmitters to receiver are quasi-static, flat, and have independent fades. Requests for message transmissions are assumed to arrive acco…
The most common decision criteria for decoding are maximum likelihood decoding and nearest neighbor decoding. It is well-known that maximum likelihood decoding coincides with nearest neighbor decoding with respect to the Hamming metric on the binary symmetric channel. In this work we study channels and metrics for which those two criteria do and do not coincide for general codes.
We solve the problem of designing powerful low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes with iterative decoding for the block-fading channel. We first study the case of maximum-likelihood decoding, and show that the design criterion is rather straightforward. Unfortunately, optimal constructions for maximum-likelihood decoding do not perform well under iterative decoding. To overcome this limitation, we then introduce a new family of full-diversity LDPC codes that exhibit near-outage-limit performance under iterative decoding for all block-lengths. This family competes with multiplexed parallel turbo…
