Based on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR6 (SDSS) and Millennium Simulation (MS) we investigate the alignment between galaxies and large-scale structure. For this purpose we develop two new statistical tools, namely the alignment correlation function and the cos(2theta)-statistic. The former is a two-dimensional extension of the traditional two-point correlation function and the latter is related to the ellipticity correlation function used for cosmic shear measurements. Both are based on the cross correlation between a sample of galaxies with orientations and a reference sample which represents the large-scale structure. Applied to the SDSS galaxy catalog the alignment correlation function reveals an overabundance of reference galaxies along the major axes of red, luminous (L > L*) galaxies out to projected separations of 60 Mpc/h. No alignment signal is detected for blue galaxies. The cos(2θ)-statistic yields very similar results. Starting from a MS semi-analytic galaxy catalog we assign an orientation to each red, luminous and central galaxy, based on the central region of the host halo. Alternatively, we use the orientation of the host halo itself. We find a mean projected misalignment between a halo and its central region of ~25 deg. Agreement with the SDSS results is good if the central orientations are used. Using the halo orientations overestimates the observed alignment by more than a factor of 2. The large volume of the MS allows to generate two-dimensional maps of the alignment correlation function which show the reference galaxy distribution to be flattened parallel to the orientations of red luminous galaxies with axis ratios of ~0.5 and ~0.75 for halo and central orientations, respectively. These ratios are almost independent of scale out to 60 Mpc/h.
We calculate the torque on galaxies in clusters due to gravity and to dynamical friction forces in order to study the possible origin of small-scale alignment effects as the result of interactions with their environment. The equation of motion for the position angle of a galaxy is derived by using a ple model. We find that weak radial alignment effects can be produced by this mechanism involving only the most massive galaxies. We also introduce a dependence on the cluster eccentricity to our equations in order to explore the alignment of galaxies with the cluster's major axis. We find that in …
We report the discovery of a statistically significant radial alignment of cluster galaxies in a sample of 85 X-ray selected clusters observed in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The tendency for alignment is a robust feature of our sample and does not vary significantly with individual cluster or galaxy properties. We use dynamical arguments to show that a significant fraction of cluster galaxies should be undergoing a parametric tidal resonance that can cause their long axes to orient themselves towards the center of the cluster potential, and therefore tentatively ascribe the observed radial a…
We test a sample of satellites of isolated primary galaxies, extracted from the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS), for any tendency to be aligned along (or against) the primary-to-satellite radius vector. If tidal effects induce such an alignment, it would contaminate recent measurements of galaxy halo masses which use the coherent alignment induced on background galaxies by gravitational lensing. The mean tangential ellipticity of 1819 satellites within 500 kpc projected radius is <e_+> = +0.004+-0.008, so no tidal alignment is detected. This implies at 95% confidence that satellite alignme…
We analyse a high redshift sample ($0.4<z<0.5$) of LRG's extracted from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4 and their surrounding structures to explore the presence of alignment effects of these bright galaxies with neighbor objects. In order to avoid projection effects we compute photometric redshifts for galaxies within $3~\mpc$ in projection of LRGs and calculate the relative angle between the LRG major axis and the direction to neighbors within 1000 km/s. We find a clear signal of alignment between LRG orientations and the distribution of galaxies within $1.5\mpc$. The alignment ef…
Using a sample of galaxy groups found in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4, we measure the following four types of alignment signals: (1) the alignment between the distributions of the satellites of each group relative to the direction of the nearest neighbor group (NNG); (2) the alignment between the major axis direction of the central galaxy of the host group (HG) and the direction of the NNG; (3) the alignment between the major axes of the central galaxies of the HG and the NNG; and (4) the alignment between the major axes of the satellites of the HG and the direction of the NNG. …
We have examined the orientations of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in poor MKW and AWM clusters and find that, like their counterparts in richer Abell clusters, poor cluster BCGs exhibit a strong propensity to be aligned with the principal axes of their host clusters as well as the surrounding distribution of nearby (< 20/h Mpc) Abell clusters. The processes responsible for dominant galaxy alignments are therefore independent of cluster richness. We argue that these alignments most likely arise from anisotropic infall of material into clusters along large-scale filaments.
We report on the results of an in depth investigation of the extended [OII]3727 line-emission in 11 3CR radio galaxies (0.5 < z < 1.1). Using a Fabry-Perot etalon to obtain both the kinematics and morphology of the [OII] gas, our goal was to find the mechanisms responsible for the creation and excitation of this warm gas, and the source of its alignment with the radio emission.
One of the most popular explanations for the so-called alignment effect in high redshift (z>0.7) radio galaxies is the scattering by dust of the hidden quasar light. As shown by De Young (1998) a problem with the dust scattering model is that the short destruction time-scale for dust grains means that they will not survive the passage of the radio jet. We investigate the survival of dust in the extended ionised gas of nearby active galaxies with jet/gas interactions. We discuss the implications on the alignment effect of high redshift (>0.7) radio galaxies. We conclude that although shocks are…
Seven cosmological hydrodynamic simulations of disk galaxy formation are analyzed to determine the alignment of the disk within the dark matter halo and the internal structure of the halo. We find that the orientation of the outer halo, beyond ~0.1 r_vir, is unaffected by the presence of the disk. In contrast, the inner halo is aligned such that the halo minor axis aligns with the disk axis. The relative orientation of these two regions of the halo are uncorrelated. The alignment of the disk and inner halo appears to take place simultaneously through their joint evolution. The disconnect betwe…
We report the serendipituous discovery of a conspicuous alignment of galaxies in a field obtained through the STIS Parallel Shear Survey. This project collects randomly distributed 50'' x 50'' fields to investigate the cosmic shear effect on this scale. Analyzing the parallel observations having the Seyfert galaxy NGC625 as primary target, we recognized over the whole field of view a strong apparent tangential alignment of galaxy ellipticities towards the image center. The field shows several arclet-like features typical for images of massive galaxy clusters, but no obvious over-density of bri…
(abridged) Powerful radio galaxies often display enhanced optical/UV emission regions, elongated and aligned with the radio jet axis. The aim of this series of papers is to separately investigate the effects of radio power and redshift on the alignment effect, together with other radio galaxy properties. In this second paper, we present a deeper analysis of the morphological properties of these systems, including both the host galaxies and their surrounding aligned emission. The host galaxies of our 6C subsample are well described as de Vaucouleurs ellipticals, with typical scale sizes of ~10k…
We investigated the influence of environment on cluster galaxies by examining the alignment of the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) position angle with respect to the host cluster X-ray position angle. The cluster position angles were measured using high spatial resolution X-ray data taken from the Chandra ACIS archive, that significantly improved the determination of the cluster shape compared to the conventional method of using optical images. Meanwhile, those of the BCGs were measured using homogeneous dataset composed of high spatial resolution optical images taken with Suprime-Cam mounted o…
Recent studies have shown that the distribution of satellite galaxies is preferentially aligned with the major axis of their central galaxy. The strength of this alignment has been found to depend strongly on the colours of the satellite and central galaxies, and only weakly on the mass of the halo in which the galaxies reside. In this paper we study whether these alignment signals, and their dependence on galaxy and halo properties, can be reproduced in a hierarchical structure formation model of a $Λ$CDM concordance cosmology. To that extent we use a large $N$-body simulation which we popula…
In this paper we investigate the influence of the intrinsic alignment of background galaxies on weak lensing detections of mass concentrations. Specifically, we analyze the number counts of false peaks resulting from intrinsic ellipticities in lensing convergence maps. Including the alignment of source galaxies, the full noise variance from intrinsic ellipticites in convergence $κ$-maps can be written as $σ^2_0=σ^2_{0ran}+σ^2_{0corr}$, where $σ^2_{0ran}$ is the noise contributed from randomly oriented source galaxies and $σ^2_{0corr}$ denotes the additional noise from intrinsic alignments. How…
We propose a new technique to directly measure the shapes of dark matter halos of galaxies using weak gravitational lensing. Extending the standard galaxy-galaxy lensing method, we show that the shape parameters of the mass distribution of foreground galaxies can be measured from the two-dimensional shear field derived from background galaxies. This enables the comparison of the ellipticity of the mass distribution with that of the light in galaxies, as well as an estimate of the degree of alignment between the stellar component and dark matter. We choose the specific case of an elliptical, is…
One of the most vital observational clues for unraveling the origin of Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCG) is the observed alignment of the BCGs with their host cluster and its surroundings. We have examined the BCG-cluster alignment effect, using clusters of galaxies detected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We find that the BCGs are preferentially aligned with the principal axis of their hosts, to a much higher redshift (z >~ 0.3) than probed by previous studies (z <~ 0.1). The alignment effect strongly depends on the magnitude difference of the BCG and the second and third brightest c…
We analyze the Tully catalog of nearby galaxies to investigate the local pancaking effect on the orientation of disk galaxies. We first select only those edge-on disk galaxies in the catalog whose axis-ratios are less than 0.1 to measure their spin axes unambiguously. A local pancake at the location of each selected galaxy is found as a plane encompassing the two nearest neighbor disks. Then, we examine statistically the inclinations of the galaxy spin axes relative to the local pancake planes. It is detected that the Tully disk galaxies tend to be inclined onto the local pancake planes, and t…
We have obtained U-band polarimetry of the spatially extended, blue optical continuum associated with the FR I radio source PKS 2322-122. PKS 2322-122 is located in the Abell 2597 cluster central galaxy. We find a three sigma upper limit to the degree of polarization of the optical continuum of less than 6%. This limit is inconsistent with the blue continuum being primarily scattered light or synchrotron radiation. We can therefore exclude models which attribute the blue continuum to scattered light from an active nucleus that is hidden from direct view. Essentially all of the data pertaining …
Powerful radio galaxies often display enhanced optical/UV continuum emission and extended emission line regions, elongated and aligned with the radio jet axis. The expansion of the radio source strongly affects the gas clouds in the surrounding IGM, and the kinematic and ionization properties of the extended emission line regions display considerable variation over the lifetime of individual sources, as well as with cosmic epoch. We present the results of deep rest-frame UV and optical imaging and UV spectroscopy of high redshift 6C radio galaxies. The interdependence of the host galaxy and ra…
The results of a deep spectroscopic campaign on powerful radio galaxies with redshifts z ~ 1, to investigate in detail their emission line gas properties, are presented. Both the 2-dimensional velocity structure of the [OII] 3727 emission line and the ionisation state of the gas are found to be strongly dependent upon the linear size (age) of the radio source in a manner indicative of the emission line properties of small (young) radio sources being dominated by the passage of the radio source shocks. The consequences of this evolution throughout the few times 10-to-the-7 year lifetime of the …
The distribution of satellite galaxies relative to isolated host galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) is investigated. Host-satellite systems are selected using three different methods, yielding samples of ~3300, ~1600, and \~950 satellites. In the plane of the sky, the distributions of all three samples show highly significant deviations from circular symmetry (> 99.99%, > 99.99%, and 99.79% confidence levels, respectively), and the degree of anisotropy is a strong function of the projected radius, r_p, at which the satellites are found. For r_p < 100 kpc, the SDSS satellites are a…
Using a large galaxy group catalogue based on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4 we measure three different types of intrinsic galaxy alignment within groups: halo alignment between the orientation of the brightest group galaxies (BGG) and the distribution of its satellite galaxies, radial alignment between the orientation of a satellite galaxy and the direction towards its BGG, and direct alignment between the orientation of the BGG and that of its satellites. In agreement with previous studies we find that satellite galaxies are preferentially located along the major axis. In additi…
We provide limits on the alignment of galaxy orientations with the direction to the void center for galaxies lying near the edges of voids. We locate spherical voids in volume limited samples of galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey using the HB inspired void finder and investigate the orientation of (color selected) spiral galaxies that are nearly edge-on or face-on. In contrast with previous literature, we find no statistical evidence for departure from random orientations. Expressed in terms of the parameter c, introduced by Lee & Pen to describe the strength of such an alignment, we f…
Large scale correlations in the orientations of galaxies can result from alignments in their angular momentum vectors. These alignments arise from the tidal torques exerted on neighboring proto-galaxies by the smoothly varying shear field. We compute the predicted amplitude of such ellipticity correlations using the Zel'dovich approximation for a realistic distribution of galaxy shapes. Weak gravitational lensing can also induce ellipticity correlations since the images of neighboring galaxies will be distorted coherently. On comparing these two effects that induce shape correlations, we find …
A Double-Double Radio Galaxy (DDRG) is defined as consisting of a pair of double radio sources with a common centre. In this paper we present an analytical model in which the peculiar radio structure of DDRGs is caused by an interruption of the jet flow in the central AGN. The new jets emerging from the restarted AGN give rise to an inner source structure within the region of the old, outer cocoon. Standard models of the evolution of FRII sources predict gas densities within the region of the old cocoon that are insufficient to explain the observed properties of the inner source structure. The…
We present an optically-based study of the alignment between the radio axes and the optical major axes of eight z~0.7 radio galaxies in a 7C sample. The radio galaxies in this sample are ~20-times less radio luminous than 3C galaxies at the same redshift, and are significantly less radio-luminous than any other well-defined samples studied to date. Using Nordic Optical Telescope images taken in good seeing conditions at rest-frame wavelengths just longward of the 4000A break, we find a statistically significant alignment effect in the 7C sample. Furthermore, in two cases where the aligned comp…
It appears that the dynamical status of clusters and groups of galaxies is related to the large-scale structure of the Universe. A few interesting trends have been established: (1) The Cluster Substructure - Alignment Connection, by which clusters show a strong correlation between their tendency to be aligned with their neighbors and their dynamical state (as indicated by the existence of significant substructres). (2) The Cluster Dynamics -Cluster Clustering Connection, by which dynamically young clusters are more clustered than the overall cluster population. (3) The Cluster- Supercluster Al…
