In recent work Bertram Kostant and Nolan Wallach ([KW1], [KW2]) have defined an interesting action of a simply connected Lie group $A$ isomorphic to \mathbb{C}^{n\choose 2} on gl(n) using a completely integrable system derived from Gelfand-Zeitlin theory. In this paper we show that an analogous action of \mathbb{C}^{d} exists on the complex orthogonal Lie algebra so(n), where d is half the dimension of a regular adjoint orbit in so(n). In [KW1], Kostant and Wallach describe the orbits of $A$ on a certain Zariski open subset of regular semisimple elements in gl(n). We extend these results to the case of so(n). We also make brief mention of the author's results in [Col1], which describe all $A$-orbits of dimension {n\choose 2} in gl(n).
A commutative Poisson subalgebra of the Poisson algebra of polynomials on the Lie algebra of n x n matrices over ${\Bbb C}$ is introduced which is the Poisson analogue of the Gelfand-Zeitlin subalgebra of the universal enveloping algebra. As a commutative algebra it is a polynomial ring in $n(n+1)/2$ generators, $n$ of which can be taken to be basic generators of the polynomial invariants. Any choice of the next $n(n-1)/2$ generators yields a Lie algebra of vector fields that generates a global holomorphic action of the additive group ${\Bbb C}^{n(n -1)/2}$. This paper proves several remarkabl…
In this paper, Part II, of a two part paper we apply the results of [KW], Part I, to establish, with an explicit dual coordinate system, a commutative analogue of the Gelfand-Kirillov theorem for M(n), the algebra of $n\times n$ complex matrices. The function field F(n) of M(n) has a natural Poisson structure and an exact analogue would be to show that F(n) is isomorphic to the function field of a $n(n-1)$-dimensional phase space over a Poisson central rational function field in $n$ variables. Instead we show that this the case for a Galois extension, $F(n, {\frak e})$, of F(n). The techniques…
The Chekanov torus was the first known \emph{exotic} torus, a monotone Lagrangian torus that is not Hamiltonian isotopic to the standard monotone Lagrangian torus. We explore the relationship between the Chekanov torus in $S^2 \times S^2$ and a monotone Lagrangian torus which had been introduced before Chekanov's construction \cite{Chekanov}. We prove that the monotone Lagrangian torus fiber in a certain Gelfand--Zeitlin system is Hamiltonian isotopic to the Chekanov torus in $S^2 \times S^2$.
We generalize a result of Kostant and Wallach concerning the algebraic integrability of the Gelfand-Zeitlin vector fields to the full set of strongly regular elements in $gl(n,\mathbb{C})$. We use decomposition classes to stratify the strongly regular set by subvarieties $X_{D}$. We construct an étale cover $\hat{\mathfrak{g}}$ of $X_{D}$ and show that $X_{D}$ and $\hat{\mathfrak{g}}$ are smooth and irreducible. We then use Poisson geometry to lift the Gelfand-Zeitlin vector fields on $X_{D}$ to Hamiltonian vector fields on $\hat{\mathfrak{g}}$ and integrate these vector fields to an action of…
We observe that the analogue of the Gelfand-Zeitlin action on gl(n,C), which exists on any symplectic manifold M with an Hamiltonian action of GL(n,C), has a natural interpretation as a residual action, after we identify M with a symplectic quotient of the product of M with T*GL(n-1,C)x...xT*GL(1,C). We also show that the Gelfand-Zeitlin actions on T*GL(n,C) and on the regular part of gl(n,C) can be identified with natural Hamiltonian actions on spaces of rational maps into full flag manifolds, while the Gelfand-Zeitlin action on the whole gl(n,C) corresponds to a natural action on a space of …
Let U(n) be the unitary group, and $u(n)^*$ the dual of its Lie algebra, equipped with the Kirillov Poisson structure. In their 1983 paper, Guillemin-Sternberg introduced a densely defined Hamiltonian action of a torus of dimension $(n-1)n/2$ on $u(n)^*$, with moment map given by the Gelfand-Zeitlin coordinates. A few years later, Flaschka-Ratiu described a similar, `multiplicative' Gelfand-Zeitlin system for the Poisson Lie group $U(n)^*$. By the Ginzburg-Weinstein theorem, $U(n)^*$ is isomorphic to $u(n)^*$ as a Poisson manifold. Flaschka-Ratiu conjectured that one can choose the Ginzburg-We…
In recent work (\cite{KW1},\cite{KW2}), Kostant and Wallach construct an action of a simply connected Lie group $A\simeq \mathbb{C}^{n\choose 2}$ on $gl(n)$ using a completely integrable system derived from the Poisson analogue of the Gelfand-Zeitlin subalgebra of the enveloping algebra. In \cite{KW1}, the authors show that $A$-orbits of dimension ${n\choose 2}$ form Lagrangian submanifolds of regular adjoint orbits in $gl(n)$. They describe the orbit structure of $A$ on a certain Zariski open subset of regular semisimple elements. In this paper, we describe all $A$-orbits of dimension ${n\cho…
We show that the Ginzburg-Weinstein diffeomorphism $\mathfrak{u}(n)^* \to U(n)^*$ of Alekseev-Meinrenken admits a scaling tropical limit on an open dense subset of $\mathfrak{u}(n)^*$. The target of the limit map is a product $\mathcal{C} \times T$, where $\mathcal{C}$ is the interior of a cone, $T$ is a torus, and $\mathcal{C} \times T$ carries an integrable system with natural action-angle coordinates. The pull-back of these coordinates to $\mathfrak{u}(n)^*$ recovers the Gelfand-Zeitlin integrable system of Guillemin-Sternberg. As a by-product of our proof, we show that the Lagrangian tori …
We prove several new results about the topology of fibers of Gelfand--Zeitlin systems on unitary and orthogonal coadjoint orbits, at the same time finding a unifying framework recovering and shedding light on essentially all known results. We find completely explicit descriptions of the diffeomorphism type of the fiber in many instances a direct factor decomposition of the fiber, and a torus factor corresponding to the action given by the Thimm trick. The new description also gives us a weak local normal form for a coadjoint orbit, which we use to define a topological toric degeneration, new i…
In 2007, Alekseev-Meinrenken proved that there exists a Ginzburg-Weinstein diffeomorphism from the dual Lie algebra ${\rm u}(n)^*$ to the dual Poisson Lie group $U(n)^*$ compatible with the Gelfand-Zeitlin integrable systems. In this paper, we explicitly construct such diffeomorphisms via Stokes phenomenon and Boalch's dual exponential maps. Then we introduce a relative version of the Ginzburg-Weinstein linearization motivated by irregular Riemann-Hilbert correspondence, and generalize the results of Enriquez-Etingof-Marshall to this relative setting. In particular, we prove the connection mat…
We compute the disk potential of Gelfand--Zeitlin monotone torus fiber in a quadric hypersurface by exploiting toric degenerations, Lie theoretical mirror symmetry, and the structural result of the monotone Fukaya category.
In two 2006 papers, Kostant and Wallach constructed a complexified Gelfand-Zeitlin integrable system for the Lie algebra $\fgl(n+1,\C)$ and introduced the strongly regular elements, which are the points where the Gelfand-Zeitlin flow is Lagrangian. Later Colarusso studied the nilfibre, which consists of strongly regular elements such that each $i\times i$ submatrix in the upper left corner is nilpotent. In this paper, we prove that every Borel subalgebra contains strongly regular elements and determine the Borel subalgebras containing elements of the nilfibre by using the theory of $K_{i}=GL(i…
We construct a Gelfand-Zeitlin system on a one-parameter family of $G_2$ coadjoint orbits that are multiplicity-free Hamiltonian $SU(3)$-spaces. Using this system we prove a lower bound for the Gromov width of these orbits. This lower bound agrees with the known upper bound.
In the present work, we study Hamiltonian systems on (co)adjoint orbits and propose a Lax pair formalism for Gelfand-Tsetlin integrable systems defined on (co)adjoint orbits of the compact Lie groups ${\rm{U}}(n)$ and ${\rm{SO}}(n)$. In the particular setting of (co)adjoint orbits of ${\rm{U}}(n)$, by means of the associated Lax matrix we construct a family of algebraic curves which encodes the Gelfand-Tsetlin integrable systems as branch points. This family of algebraic curves enables us to explore some new insights into the relationship between the topology of singular Gelfand-Tsetlin fibers…
Actions of $U(n)$ on $U(n+1)$ coadjoint orbits via embeddings of $U(n)$ into $U(n+1)$ are an important family of examples of multiplicity free spaces. They are related to Gelfand-Zeitlin completely integrable systems and multiplicity free branching rules in representation theory. This paper computes the Hamiltonian local normal forms of all such actions, at arbitrary points, in arbitrary $U(n+1)$ coadjoint orbits. The results are described using combinatorics of interlacing patterns; gadgets that describe the associated Kirwan polytopes.
We define a toric degeneration of an integrable system on a projective manifold, and prove the existence of a toric degeneration of the Gelfand-Cetlin system on the flag manifold of type A. As an application, we calculate the potential function for a Lagrangian torus fiber of the Gelfand-Cetlin system.
We introduce the notion of tropicalization for Poisson structures on $\mathbb{R}^n$ with coefficients in Laurent polynomials. To such a Poisson structure we associate a polyhedral cone and a constant Poisson bracket on this cone. There is a version of this formalism applicable to $\mathbb{C}^n$ viewed as a real Poisson manifold. In this case, the tropicalization gives rise to a completely integrable system with action variables taking values in a polyhedral cone and angle variables spanning a torus. As an example, we consider the canonical Poisson bracket on the dual Poisson-Lie group $G^*$ fo…
In this paper, we show that every singular fiber of the Gelfand--Cetlin system on coadjoint orbits of unitary groups is a smooth isotropic submanifold which is diffeomorphic to a $2$-stage quotient of a compact Lie group by free actions of two other compact Lie groups. In many cases, these singular fibers can be shown to be homogeneous spaces or even diffeomorphic to compact Lie groups. We also give a combinatorial formula for computing the dimensions of all singular fibers, and give a detailed description of these singular fibers in many cases, including the so-called (multi-)diamond singular…
Coadjoint orbits and multiplicity free spaces of compact Lie groups are important examples of symplectic manifolds with Hamiltonian groups actions. Constructing action-angle variables on these spaces is a challenging task. A fundamental result in the field is the Guillemin-Sternberg construction of Gelfand-Zeitlin integrable systems for the groups $K=U(n), SO(n)$. Extending these results to groups of other types is one of the goals of this paper. Partial tropicalizations are Poisson spaces with constant Poisson bracket built using techniques of Poisson-Lie theory and the geometric crystals of …
We use the Gelfand-Tsetlin pattern to construct an effective Hamiltonian, completely integrable action of a torus T on an open dense subset of a coadjoint orbit of the unitary group. We then identify a proper Hamiltonian T-manifold centered around a point in the dual of the Lie algebra of T. A theorem of Karshon and Tolman says that such a manifold is equivariantly symplectomorphic to a particular subset of R^2D. This fact enables us to construct symplectic embeddings of balls into certain coadjoint orbits of the unitary group, and therefore obtain a lower bound for their Gromov width. Using t…
