We consider a particle diffusing along the links of a general graph possessing some absorbing vertices. The particle, with a spatially-dependent diffusion constant D(x) is subjected to a drift U(x) that is defined in every point of each link. We establish the boundary conditions to be used at the vertices and we derive general expressions for the average time spent on a part of the graph before absorption and, also, for the Laplace transform of the joint law of the occupation times. Exit times distributions and splitting probabilities are also studied and several examples are discussed.
We introduce the exit time finite state projection (ETFSP) scheme, a truncation-based method that yields approximations to the exit distribution and occupation measure associated with the time of exit from a domain (i.e., the time of first passage to the complement of the domain) of time-homogeneous continuous-time Markov chains. We prove that: (i) the computed approximations bound the measures from below; (ii) the total variation distances between the approximations and the measures decrease monotonically as states are added to the truncation; and (iii) the scheme converges, in the sense that…
We consider the one-dimensional target search process that involves an immobile target located at the origin and $N$ searchers performing independent Brownian motions starting at the initial positions $\vec x = (x_1,x_2,..., x_N)$ all on the positive half space. The process stops when the target is first found by one of the searchers. We compute the probability distribution of the maximum distance $m$ visited by the searchers till the stopping time and show that it has a power law tail: $P_N(m|\vec x)\sim B_N (x_1x_2... x_N)/m^{N+1}$ for large $m$. Thus all moments of $m$ up to the order $(N-1…
We study the occupation fluctuations of drifted Brownian motion in a closed interval, and show that they undergo a dynamical phase transition in the long-time limit without an additional low-noise limit. This phase transition is similar to wetting and depinning transitions, and arises here as a switching between paths of the random motion leading to different occupations. For low occupations, the motion essentially stays in the interval for some fraction of time before escaping, while for high occupations the motion is confined in an ergodic way in the interval. This is confirmed by studying a…

We provide an analytic solution to the first-passage time (FPT) problem of a piecewise-smooth stochastic model, namely Brownian motion with dry friction, using two different but closely related approaches which are based on eigenfunction decompositions on the one hand and on the backward Kolmogorov equation on the other. For the simple case containing only dry friction, a phase transition phenomenon in the spectrum is found which relates to the position of the exit point, and which affects the tail of the FPT distribution. For the model containing as well a driving force and viscous friction t…
Tied-down renewal processes are generalisations of the Brownian bridge, where an event (or a zero crossing) occurs both at the origin of time and at the final observation time $t$. We give an analytical derivation of the two-time correlation function for such processes in the Laplace space of all temporal variables. This yields the exact asymptotic expression of the correlation in the Porod regime of short separations between the two times and in the persistence regime of large separations. We also investigate other quantities, such as the backward and forward recurrence times, as well as the …

Be $X_t$ a random process starting at $x \in [0,1]$ with absorbing boundary conditions at both ends of the interval. Denote $P_1(x)$ the probability to first exit at the upper boundary. For Brownian motion, $P_1(x)=x$, equivalent to $P_1'(x)=1$. For fractional Brownian motion with Hurst exponent $H$, we establish that $P_1'(x) = {\cal N} [x(1-x)]^{\frac1H -2} e^{ε{\cal F}(x)+ {\cal O}(ε^2)}$, where $ε=H-\frac12$. The function ${\cal F}(x)$ is analytic, and well approximated by its Taylor expansion, ${\cal F}(x)\simeq 16 (C-1) (x-1/2)^2 +{\cal O}(x-1/2)^4$, where $C= 0.915...$ is the Catalan-co…
Classical arcsine law states that fraction of occupation time on the positive or the negative side in Brownian motion does not converge to a constant but converges in distribution to the arcsine distribution. Here, we consider how a preparation of the system affects the arcsine law, i.e., aging of the arcsine law. We derive aging distributional theorem for occupation time statistics in Brownian motion, where the ratio of time when measurements start to the measurement time plays an important role in determining the shape of the distribution. Furthermore, we show that this result can be general…
The distribution of exit times is computed for a Brownian particle in spherically symmetric two- dimensional domains (disks, angular sectors, annuli) and in rectangles that contain an exit on their boundary. The governing partial differential equation of Helmholtz type with mixed Dirichlet- Neumann boundary conditions is solved analytically. We propose both an exact solution relying on a matrix inversion, and an approximate explicit solution. The approximate solution is shown to be exact for an exit of vanishing size and to be accurate even for large exits. For angular sectors, we also derive …
Functionals of Brownian/non-Brownian motions have diverse applications and attracted a lot of interest of scientists. This paper focuses on deriving the forward and backward fractional Feynman-Kac equations describing the distribution of the functionals of the space and time tempered anomalous diffusion, belonging to the continuous time random walk class. Several examples of the functionals are explicitly treated, including the occupation time in half-space, the first passage time, the maximal displacement, the fluctuations of the occupation fraction, and the fluctuations of the time-averaged …
As a main example for the superstatistics approach, we study a Brownian particle moving in a d-dimensional inhomogeneous environment with macroscopic temperature fluctuations. We discuss the average occupation time of the particle in spatial cells with a given temperature. The Fokker-Planck equation for this problem becomes a stochastic partial differential equation. We illustrate our results using experimentally measured time series from hydrodynamic turbulence.
We study the low temperature behaviour of path integrals for a simple one-dimensional model. Starting from the Feynman-Kac formula, we derive a new functional representation of the density matrix at finite temperature, in terms of the occupation times of Brownian motions constrained to stay within boxes with finite sizes. From that representation, we infer a kind of ergodic approximation, which only involves double ordinary integrals. As shown by its applications to different confining potentials, the ergodic approximation turns out to be quite efficient, especially in the low-temperature regi…
We study the dynamics of a Brownian particle in Morse potential under thermal fluctuations, modeled by Gaussian white noise whose amplitude depends on absolute temperature. Dynamics of such a particle is investigated by numerically integrating the corresponding Langevin equation. From the mean first passage time (escape time), we study the dependence of Kramer's rate on temperature and viscosity of the medium. An approximate expression for the reaction rate is found by solving differential equation for the mean first passage time. The expression shows a temperature dependent pre-factor for the…
The Caughey-Dieness process, also known as the Brownian motion with two valued drift, is used in theoretical physics as an advanced model of the Brownian particle velocity if the resistant force is assumed to be dry friction. This process also appears in many other fields, such as applied physics, mechanics, astrophysics, and pure mathematics. In the present paper we are concerned with a more general process, skew Brownian motion with dry friction. The probability distribution of the process itself and of its occupation time on the positive half line are studied. The approach based on the Puga…
