This article reviews developments in the theory of rapidly rotating degenerate atomic gases. The main focus is on the equilibrium properties of a single component atomic Bose gas, which (at least at rest) forms a Bose-Einstein condensate. Rotation leads to the formation of quantized vortices which order into a vortex array, in close analogy with the behaviour of superfluid helium. Under conditions of rapid rotation, when the vortex density becomes large, atomic Bose gases offer the possibility to explore the physics of quantized vortices in novel parameter regimes. First, there is an interesting regime in which the vortices become sufficiently dense that their cores -- as set by the healing length -- start to overlap. In this regime, the theoretical description simplifies, allowing a reduction to single particle states in the lowest Landau level. Second, one can envisage entering a regime of very high vortex density, when the number of vortices becomes comparable to the number of particles in the gas. In this regime, theory predicts the appearance of a series of strongly correlated phases, which can be viewed as {\it bosonic} versions of fractional quantum Hall states. This article describes the equilibrium properties of rapidly rotating atomic Bose gases in both the mean-field and the strongly correlated regimes, and related theoretical developments for Bose gases in lattices, for multi-component Bose gases, and for atomic Fermi gases. The current experimental situation and outlook for the future are discussed in the light of these theoretical developments.
We apply the equation-of-motion method to study the collective excitation spectrum from a filled Landau level in rotating dipolar Fermi gases. The predicted excitation spectrum of rotating dipolar Fermi gases can exhibit a roton-minimum character. This roton character is tunable by varying the dipole interaction strength and confining potential. An increase of the dipole interaction strength makes the roton minimum becoming zero, and the system becomes unstable. We also obtain a condition for the dynamical stability of rotating dipolar Fermi gases.
We study the groundstates of rotating Bose gases when interactions are affected by a nearby Feshbach resonance. We show that exact groundstates at high angular momentum can be found analytically for a general and realistic model for the resonant interactions. We identify parameter regimes where the exact groundstates are exotic fractional quantum Hall states, the excitations of which obey non-abelian exchange statistics.
We demonstrate the experimental feasibility of incompressible fractional quantum Hall-like states in ultra-cold two dimensional rapidly rotating dipolar Fermi gases. In particular, we argue that the state of the system at filling fraction $ν=1/3$ is well-described by the Laughlin wave function and find a substantial energy gap in the quasiparticle excitation spectrum. Dipolar gases, therefore, appear as natural candidates of systems that allow to realize these very interesting highly correlated states in future experiments.
We apply the magneto-roton theory of the fractional quantum Hall effect to study the collective excitation spectrum of rotating dipolar Fermi gases. The predicted spectrum has a finite energy gap in the long wavelength limit and a roton minimum at finite wave vector. The roton minimum being deepened from filling factor 1/3 to filling factor 1/5 is a signature of incipient crystallization near filling factor 1/7. We also demonstrate that there are no low-lying single-particle excitations below the roton mode. The fractional-quantum-Hall fluid rotating dipolar fermions behaves as an incompressib…
The role of anyonic excitations in fast rotating harmonically trapped Bose gases in a fractional Quantum Hall State is examined. Standard Chern-Simons anyons as well as "non standard" anyons obtained from a statistical interaction having Maxwell-Chern-Simons dynamics and suitable non minimal coupling to matter are considered. Their respective ability to stabilize attractive Bose gases under fast rotation in the thermodynamical limit is studied. Stability can be obtained for standard anyons while for non standard anyons, stability requires that the range of the corresponding statistical interac…
We study the composite fermion construction at and below the single vortex ($L=N$) state of weakly interacting rotating Bose gases, presenting a new method for handling the large number of derivatives typically occurring via the Slater determinant. Remarkably, the CF wave function at $L=N$ becomes {\em exact} in the large $N$ limit, even though this construction is not, {\em a priori}, expected to work in the low angular momentum regime. This implies an interesting mathematical identity which may be useful in other contexts.
Through exact numerical diagonalization, the von Neumann entropy is calculated for the Laughlin and Pfaffian quantum Hall states in rotating interacting Bose gases at zero temperature in the lowest Landau level limit. The particles comprising the states are indistinguishable, so the required spatial bipartitioning is effected by tracing over a subset of single-particle orbitals. The topological entropy is then extracted through a finite-size scaling analysis. The results for the Laughlin and the Pfaffian states agree with the expected values of $\ln\sqrt{2}$ and $\ln\sqrt{4}$, respectively.
We show that dipolar interactions have dramatic effects on the groundstates of rotating atomic Bose gases in the weak interaction limit. With increasing dipolar interaction (relative to the net contact interaction), the mean-field, or high filling fraction, groundstate undergoes a series of transitions between vortex lattices of different symmetries: triangular, square, ``stripe'', and ``bubble'' phases. We also study the effects of dipolar interactions on the quantum fluids at low filling fractions. We show that the incompressible Laughlin state at filling fraction $ν=1/2$ is replaced by comp…
We use a Chern Simons Landau-Ginzburg (CSLG) framework related to hierarchies of composite bosons to describe 2D harmonically trapped fast rotating Bose gases in Fractional Quantum Hall Effect (FQHE) states. The predicted values for $ν$ (ratio of particle to vortex numbers) are $ν$$=$${{p}\over{q}}$ ($p$, $q$ are any integers) with even product $pq$, including numerically favored values previously found and predicting a richer set of values. We show that those values can be understood from a bosonic analog of the law of the corresponding states relevant to the electronic FQHE. A tentative glob…

We study the competition between the Wigner crystal and the Laughlin liquid states in an ultracold quasi two-dimensional rapidly rotating polarized fermionic dipolar gas, and find that the Wigner crystal has a lower energy below a critical filling factor. We examine the quantum crystal to liquid transition for different confinements in the third direction. Our analysis of the phonon spectra of the Wigner crystal with the account of phonon-phonon interactions also shows the stability of the Wigner crystal for sufficiently low filling factors (ν<1/7).
We show that for rotating harmonically trapped Bose gases in a fractional quantum Hall state, the anyonic excitation statistics in the rotating gas can effectively play a {\em dynamical} role. For particular values of the two-dimensional coupling constant $g = -2π\hbar^2 (2k-1)/m$, where $k$ is a positive integer, the system becomes a noninteracting gas of anyons, with exactly obtainable solutions satisfying Bogomol'nyi self-dual order parameter equations. Attractive Bose gases under rapid rotation thus can be stabilized in the thermodynamic limit due to the anyonic statistics of their quasipa…
We study the groundstates of weakly interacting atomic Bose gases under conditions of rapid rotation. We present the results of large-scale exact diagonalisation studies on a periodic geometry (a torus) which allows studies of compressible states with broken translational symmetry. Focusing on filling factor $ν=2$, we show a competition between the triangular vortex lattice, a quantum smectic state, and the incompressible $k=4$ Read-Rezayi state. We discuss the corrections arising from finite size effects, and the likely behaviour for large system sizes. The Read-Rezayi state is stabilised by …
We consider a gas of non-interacting spinless fermions in a rotating optical lattice and calculate the density profile of the gas in an external confinement potential. The density profile exhibits distinct plateaus, which correspond to gaps in the single particle spectrum known as the Hofstadter butterfly. The plateaus result from insulating behavior whenever the Fermi energy lies within a gap. We discuss the necessary conditions to realize the Hofstadter insulator in a cold atom setup and show how the quantized Hall conductance can be measured from density profiles using the Středa formula.
Through exact numerical diagonalization for small numbers of atoms, we show that it is possible to access quantum Hall states in harmonically confined Bose gases at rotation frequencies well below the centrifugal limit by applying a repulsive Gaussian potential at the trap center. The main idea is to reduce or eliminate the effective trapping frequency in regions where the particle density is appreciable. The critical rotation frequency required to obtain the bosonic Laughlin state can be fixed at an experimentally accessible value by choosing an applied Gaussian whose amplitude increases line…
We discuss the feasibility of quantum Hall states of vortices in trapped low-density two-dimensional Bose gases with large particle interactions. For interaction strengths larger than a critical dimensionless 2D coupling constant $g_c \approx 0.6$, upon increasing the rotation frequency, the system is shown to spatially separate into vortex lattice and melted vortex lattice (vortex liquid) phases. At a first critical frequency, the lattice melts completely, and strongly correlated vortex and particle quantum Hall liquids coexist in inner respectively outer regions of the gas cloud. Finally, at…
We examine a rapidly rotating Bose-Einstein condensate in an anharmonic confinement and find that many properties such as the critical rotating frequency and phase diagram are quite different from those in a harmonic trap. We investigate the phase transitions by means of average-vortex-approximation. We find that the vortex lattice consists of a vortex array with a hole in the center of the cloud as the rotating frequency $Ω$ increases and the vortex becomes invisible when $Ω$ reaches some value.
The characterization of small samples of cold bosonic atoms in rotating microtraps has recently attracted increasing interest due to the possibility to deal with a few number of particles per site in optical lattices. We analyze the evolution of ground state structures as the rotational frequency $Ω$ increases. Various kinds of ordered structures are observed. For $N<10$ atoms, the standard scenario, valid for large sytems, is absent, and only gradually recovered as $N$ increases. The vortex contribution to the total angular momentum $L$ as a function of $Ω$ ceases to be an increasing function…
We study theoretically the low-temperature phases of a two-component atomic Fermi gas with attractive s-wave interactions under conditions of rapid rotation. We find that, in the extreme quantum limit, when all particles occupy the lowest Landau level, the normal state is unstable to the formation of "charge" density wave (CDW) order. At lower rotation rates, when many Landau levels are occupied, we show that the low-temperature phases can be supersolids, involving both CDW and superconducting order.
Bosons in the lowest Landau level, such as rapidly-rotating cold trapped atoms, are investigated numerically in the specially interesting case in which the filling factor (ratio of particle number to vortex number) is 3/2. When a moderate amount of a longer-range (e.g. dipolar) interaction is included, we find clear evidence that the ground state is in a phase constructed earlier by two of us, in which excitations possess non-Abelian statistics.
We study strongly correlated ground and excited states of rotating quasi-2D Fermi gases constituted of a small number of dipole-dipole interacting particles with dipole moments polarized perpendicular to the plane of motion. As the number of atoms grows, the system enters {\it an intermediate regime}, where ground states are subject to a competition between distinct bulk-edge configurations. This effect obscures their description in terms of composite fermions and leads to the appearance of novel composite fermion quasi-hole states. In the presence of dipolar interactions, the principal Laughl…
The edge excitations and related topological orders of correlated states of a fast rotating Bose gas are studied. Using exact diagonalization of small systems, we compute the energies and number of edge excitations, as well as the boson occupancy near the edge for various states. The chiral Luttinger-liquid theory of Wen is found to be a good description of the edges of the bosonic Laughlin and other states identified as members of the principal Jain sequence for bosons. However, we find that in a harmonic trap the edge of the state identified as the Moore-Read (Pfaffian) state shows a number …
Recently a novel phase transition has been observed \cite{jalin} in a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate when the rotating frequency $Ω$ reaches the transverse trap frequency $ω_{\bot}$ and eventually crosses it. We study certain aspects of this experiment in terms of the condensation of composite bosons and the corresponding vortex formation using a Chern-Simon Gross-Pitaevskii theory. %
We numerically study the system of rapidly rotating Bose atoms at the filling factor (ratio of particle number to vortex number) $ν=1$ with the dipolar interaction. A moderate dipolar interaction stabilizes the incompressible quantum liquid at $ν=1$. Further addition induces a collapse of it. The state after the collapse is a compressible state which has phases with stripes and bubbles. There are two types of bubbles with a different array. We also investigate models constructed from truncated interactions and the models with the three-body contact interaction. They also have phases with strip…
The energy spectrum for an ultracold rotating Bose gas in a harmonic trap is calculated exactly for small systems, allowing the atoms to occupy several Landau levels. Two vortex-like states and two strongly correlated states (the Pfaffian and Laughlin) are considered in detail. In particular, their critical rotation frequencies and energy gaps are determined as a function of particle number, interaction strength, and the number of Landau levels occupied (up to three). For the vortex-like states, the Lowest Landau level (LLL) approximation is justified only if the interaction strength decreases…
Ultracold neutral bosons in a rapidly rotating atomic trap have been predicted to exhibit fractional quantum Hall-like states. We describe how the composite fermion theory, used in the description of the fractional quantum Hall effect for electrons, can be applied to interacting bosons. Numerical evidence supporting the formation of composite fermions, each being the bound state of a boson and one flux quantum, is shown for filling fractions of the type nu=p/(p+1), both by spectral analysis and by direct comparison with trial wave functions. The rapidly rotating system of two-dimensional boson…
We study BCS-BEC crossover in the strongly correlated regime of two component rotating Fermi gases. We predict that the strong correlations induced by rotation will have the effect of modifying the crossover region relative to the non-rotating situation. We show via the two particle correlation function that the crossover smoothly connects the s-wave paired fermionic fractional quantum Hall state to the bosonic Laughlin state.
