The three dimensional structure of the brightest part of the Orion Nebula is assessed in the light of published and new data. We find that the widely accepted model of a concave blister of ionized material needs to be altered in the southwest direction from the Trapezium, where we find that the Orion-S feature is a separate cloud of very optically thick molecules within the body of ionized gas, which is probably the location of the multiple embedded sources that produce the outflows that define the Orion-S star formation region. Evidence for this cloud comes from the presence of H2CO lines in absorption in the radio continuum and discrepancies in the extinction derived from radio-optical and optical only emission. We present an equilibrium Cloudy model of the Orion-S cloud, which successfully reproduces many observed properties of this feature. We also report the discovery of an open-sided shell of [O III] surrounding the Trapezium stars, revealed through emission line ratio images and the onset of radiation shadows beyond some proplyds. We show that the observed properties of the shell are consistent with it being a stationary structure, produced by shock interactions between the ambient nebular gas and the high-velocity wind from theta^1 Ori C. We examine the implications of the recently published evidence for a large blueshifted velocity of theta^1 Ori C with respect to the Orion Molecular Cloud, which could mean that this star has only recently begun to photoionize the Orion Nebula. We show that current observations of the Nebula do not rule out such a possibility, so long as the ionization front has propagated into a pre-existing low-density region. In addition, a young age for the Nebula would help explain the presence of nearby proplyds with a short mass-loss timescale to photoablation.
The search of consistency between nebular and massive star abundances has been a longstanding problem. I briefly review what has been done regarding to this topic, also presenting a recent study focused on the Orion nebula: the O and Si stellar abundances resulting from a detailed and fully consistent spectroscopic analysis of the group of B stars associated with the Orion nebula are compared with the most recent nebular gas-phase results.
The predicted emission spectrum of NII is compared with observations of permitted lines in the Orion nebula. Conventional nebular models show that the intensities of the more intense lines can be explained by fluorescence of starlight absorption with a N abundance that is consistent with forbidden lines. Lines excited mostly by recombination on the other hand predict high N abundances. The effects of stellar and nebular parameters and of the atomic data on the predicted intensities are examined.
We suggest that the Orion A cloud is gravitationally collapsing on large scales, and is producing the Orion Nebula Cluster due to the focusing effects of gravity acting within a finite cloud geometry. In support of this suggestion, we show how an elliptical rotating sheet of gas with a modest density gradient along the major axis can collapse to produce a structure qualitatively resembling Orion A, with a fan-shaped structure at one end, ridges or filaments along the fan, and a narrow curved filament at the other end reminiscent of the famous integral-shaped filament. The model produces a loca…
We have used the Very Long Baseline Array to measure the trigonometric parallax of several member stars of the Orion Nebula Cluster showing non-thermal radio emission. We have determined the distance to the cluster to be 414 +/- 7 pc. Our distance determination allows for an improved calibration of luminosities and ages of young stars. We have also measured the proper motions of four cluster stars which, when accurate radial velocities are measured, will put strong constraints on the origin of the cluster.
We report the detection of several new circumstellar disks seen in silhouette in the outskirts of the Orion nebula and M43, detected as part of our Halpha survey of Orion with the HST/ACS. Several of the disks show bipolar reflection nebulae, microjets, or temporal variability. Two disks in our sample are large and particularly noteworthy: A nearly edge-on disk, d216-0939, is located several arcminutes northwest of M43 and resembles the famous HH30 disk/jet system in Taurus. It drives the 0.15 pc long bipolar outflow HH667, and exhibits a remarkable asymmetric reflection nebula. With a diamete…
The detection and first identification of the deuterium Balmer emission lines, D-alpha and D-beta, in the core of the Orion Nebula is reported. Observations were conducted at the 3.6m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, using the Echelle spectrograph Gecko. These lines are very narrow and have identical 11 km/s velocity shifts with respect to H-alpha and H-beta. They are probably excited by UV continuum fluorescence from the Lyman (DI) lines and arise from the interface between the HII region and the molecular cloud.
We determine the parallax and proper motion of the flaring, non-thermal radio star GMR A, a member of the Orion Nebula Cluster, using Very Long Baseline Array observations. Based on the parallax, we measure a distance of 389 +24/-21 parsecs to the source. Our measurement places the Orion Nebula Cluster considerably closer than the canonical distance of 480 +/- 80 parsecs determined by Genzel et al. (1981). A change of this magnitude in distance lowers the luminosities of the stars in the cluster by a factor of ~ 1.5. We briefly discuss two effects of this change--an increase in the age spread …
The Trifid nebula is a young HII region undergoing a burst of star formation. In this article, we report on far-infrared and millimeter continuum and line observations of several massive and bright protostellar sources in the vicinity of the exciting star fo the nebula, just behind the ionization front. These objects are probably young protostars (Class 0) and are associated with very massive cores (M ~ 8-90 Msol) powering young energetic outflows. Analysis of the far-infrared emission in the 45-200 micron range from ISO/LWS data shows that they are embedded in cold dense material. Inspection …
A strong emission line at 2.8935 mu discovered by Rubin et al. (2001) in an ISO SWS02 spectrum of the Orion Nebula is identified as the 4p - 4s multiplet of the O I triplets. Line formation is due to de-excitation cascades following UV-pumping of high triplet terms and occurs in the O I zone immediately behind the Hydrogen ionization front. This cascade mechanism also accounts for permitted O I triplet lines in the optical spectrum (Grandi 1975). An escape probability treatment of the O I cascades accounts for the strength of the 2.89 mu line and suggests interesting diagnostic possibilities f…
In this paper, we present a briefly overview of the protoplanetary disks in the Orion Nebula, incluiding some astrobiological aspects and an H$α$ Fabry-Perot study of 16 of them. We found that Fabry-Perot interferometry constitutes an effective technique for the detection of proplyds. We also report heliocentric systemic velocities for the proplyds 82-336, 158-323, 158-326, 159-350, 161-314, 161-324, 163-317, 166-316, 167-317, 168-326, 170-337, 176-325, 177-341, 180-331, 197-427 and 244-440. The velocities were measured between 22-38 km s$^{-1}$.
We present VLT UVES echelle spectrophotometry of the Orion nebula in the 3100 to 10400 A range. We have measured the intensity of 555 emission lines, many of them corresponding to permitted lines of different heavy-element ions. This is the largest set of spectral emission lines ever obtained for a Galactic or extragalactic HII region. We have derived He+, C++, O+, O++ and Ne++ abundances from pure recombination lines. This is the first time that O+ and Ne++ abundances are obtained from this kind of lines in the nebula. We have also derived abundances from collisionally excited lines for a lar…
The Chandra Orion Ultradeep project (COUP) observation described in a companion paper by Getman et al. provides an exceptionally deep X-ray survey of the Orion Nebula Cluster and associated embedded young stellar objects. Membership of the region is important for studies of the stellar IMF, cluster dynamics, and star formation. The COUP study detected 1616 X-ray sources. In this study we confirm cloud membership for 1315 stars, identify 16 probable foreground field stars having optical counterparts with discrepant proper motions, and classify the remaining 285 X-ray sources, of which 51 are li…
The spectra of Herbig Haro objects are usually characteristic of ionization and excitation in shock-heated gas, whether an internal shock in an unsteady outflow or a bow shock interface with the interstellar medium. We examine the eastern-most shock -- the leading optically visible shock -- of a Herbig Haro outflow (HH 529) seen projected on the face of the Orion Nebula, using deep optical echelle spectroscopy, showing that the spectrum of this gas is consistent with photoionization by $θ^1$ Ori C. By modeling the emission lines, we determine a gas-phase abundance of Fe which is consistent wit…
We report the discovery of a dozen Herbig-Haro jets illuminated by the Lyman continuum and/or softer far-ultraviolet radiation fields of nearby high mass stars. Five irradiated outflows lie in the outer parts of the Orion Nebula and seven lie near the reflection nebula NGC 1333 in the Perseus molecular cloud. We propose that the UV radiation field has eroded residual material left over from the formation of these young source stars. Many of the irradiated jets exhibit unusual C-shaped bending. In the outskirts of the Orion Nebula, most irradiated jets bend away from the core of the nebula. On …
The Orion Nebula is one of the most frequently observed nearby (<1 kiloparsec) star forming regions and, consequently, the subject of a large bibliography of observations and interpretation. The summary in this chapter is bounded spatially by the blister HII region, with sources beyond the central nebula that are part of the same dynamical clustering covered in other chapters in this book. Herein are discussed panchromatic observations of the massive OB stars, the general T Tauri population, the sub-stellar sources and variable stars within the Orion Nebula. First, a brief history of 400 years…
Most stars form as members of large associations within dense, very cold (10-100 K) molecular clouds. The nearby giant molecular cloud in Orion hosts several thousand stars of ages less than a few million years, many of which are located in or around the famous Orion Nebula, a prominent gas structure illuminated and ionized by a small group of massive stars (the Trapezium). We present X-ray observations obtained with the X-ray Multi-Mirror satellite XMM-Newton revealing that a hot plasma with a temperature of 1.7-2.1 million K pervades the southwest extension of the nebula. The plasma, origina…
We describe multi-wavelength (8--20 micron), diffraction-limited, mid-infrared images of the OMC-1 cloud core in Orion, covering an approximately two arcminute area around the Trapezium and BN/KL regions. We have detected mid-infrared emission at the locations of a subset of the previously identified proplyds in the Orion Nebula along with two new infrared sources. The Ney-Allen nebula surrounding the OB star theta 1 Ori d exhibits a ring or toroidal structure at the longest wavelengths. The BN/KL complex appears as an extended, butterfly-shaped structure with significant bipolar symmetry whic…
In massive stars, magnetic fields are thought to confine the outflowing radiatively-driven wind, resulting in X-ray emission that is harder, more variable and more efficient than that produced by instability-generated shocks in non-magnetic winds. Although magnetic confinement of stellar winds has been shown to strongly modify the mass-loss and X-ray characteristics of massive OB stars, we lack a detailed understanding of the complex processes responsible. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between magnetism, stellar winds and X-ray emission of OB stars. In conjunction with a…
The results obtained by Kroupa, Petr & McCaughrean (1999) for specific models of young compact binary-rich clusters are generalised using dynamical scaling relations, to infer the candidate set of possible birth models leading to the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC), of which the Trapezium Cluster is the core. It is found that candidate sets of solutions exist which allow the ONC to be in virial equilibrium, expanding or contracting. The range of possible solutions is quite narrow. These results will serve as guidelines for future, CPU-intensive calculations of the stellar-dynamical and astrophysica…
High-dispersion echelle spectroscopy in optical forbidden lines of O^0, S^+, and S^2+ is used to construct velocity-resolved images and electron density maps of the inner region of the Orion nebula with a resolution of 10 km s-1 x 3" x 2". Among the objects and regions newly discovered in this study are (1) the Diffuse Blue Layer: an extended layer of moderately blue-shifted, low-density, low-ionization emission in the southeast region of the nebula; (2) the Red Bay: a region to the east of the Trapezium where the usual correlation between velocity and ionization potential is very weak, and wh…
Many low-mass stars in the Orion nebula are associated with very compact (~= 1 arcsec) emission knots, known variously as proplyds, PIGs or LV knots. Some of these knots are teardrop-shaped, with ``tails'' pointing away from the massive star Theta 1 Ori C, which is the principal exciting star of the nebula. We discuss models of such knots, which invoke the interaction of the fast stellar wind from Theta 1 Ori C with a transonic photoevaporated flow from the surface of an accretion disk around a young low-mass star. We review previous analytic work and compare the results of the model with the …
We have used widely spaced in time Hubble Space Telescope images to determine tangential velocities of features associated with outflows from young stars. These observations were supplemented by groundbased telescope spectroscopy and from the resultant radial velocities, space velocities were determined for many outflows. Numerous new moving features were found and grouped into known and newly assigned Herbig Haro objects. It was found that stellar outflow is highly discontinuous, as frequently is the case, with long-term gaps of a few hundred years and that these outflow periods are marked by…
We present the initial results of a study of the surface lithium abundance in a sample of low-mass members (M~0.4-1.0 Msun) of the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) that provide an independent clock to estimate stellar ages. We report discovery of significant depletion of lithium in four stars with estimated mass of ~0.4 Msun and age ~10Myr. Comparison with the predictions of numerical and analytical models shows excellent agreement between the isochronal age and lithium depletion time scale for two objects, the first case in lithium-poor pre-main sequence stars. Our results bear on the issue of the …
We present the atlas of protoplanetary disks in the Orion Nebula based on the ACS/WFC images obtained for the HST Treasury Program on the Orion Nebula Cluster. The observations have been carried out in 5 photometric filters nearly equivalent to the standard B, V, Halpha, I, and z passbands. Our master catalog lists 178 externally ionized proto-planetary disks (proplyds), 28 disks seen only in absorption against the bright nebular background (silhouette disks), 8 disks seen only as dark lanes at the midplane of extended polar emission (bipolar nebulae or reflection nebulae) and 5 sources showin…
We present the results of a spectroscopic analysis of the Trapezium cluster stars inside the Orion Nebula. The rotational velocities have been obtained using Fourier analysis method, finding agreement with values derived from the usual method, based on linewidth measurements. The rotational velocity derived for theta 1 Ori C through this method is consistent with the variability of some of its spectral features that have a period of 15.42 days. By means of the fit of H, HeI and HeII observed profiles with FASTWIND synthetic profiles, stellar parameters and wind characteristics have been derive…
The ionization structure of the Orion nebula can be described as a skin-like ionization structure on the surface of a dense cloud. We propose that a steep density stratification, increasing as a powerlaw ($n \propto x^{-2}$) function of distance x from the ionization front, exhibits properties which agree with our long-slit spectrum of the Orion nebula. For instance, there exist a unicity relation between both the Hbeta surface brightness or the ionization front [SII] density, and the scale L of the powerlaw, where L is the distance between the ionization front and the onset of the density nea…
We present an atlas of three-dimensional (position-position-velocity) spectra of the Orion Nebula in optical emission lines from a variety of different ionization stages: [O I] 6300, [S II] 6716,6731, [N II] 6584, [S III] 6312, H alpha 6563, and [O III] 5007. These transitions provide point to point information about the physical structure and kinematics of the nebula at an effective resolution of 3'' x 2'' x 10 km/s, clearly showing the large scale behavior of the ionized gas and the presence of localized phenomena such as Herbig-Haro outflows. As an example application of the atlas, we prese…
We reexamine the spectroscopic underpinnings of recent suggestions that [O I] and [Fe II] lines from the Orion H II region are produced in gas where the iron-carrying grains have been destroyed and the electron density is surprisingly high. Our new observations show that previous detections of [O I] 5577 were dominated by telluric emission. Our limits are consistent with a moderate density (10^4 cm^{-3}) photoionized gas. We show that a previously proposed model of the Orion H II region reproduces the observed [O I] and [Fe II] spectrum. These lines are fully consistent with formation in a dus…
Based on the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Project (COUP) observation, we establish the global X-ray properties of the stellar population associated with the Orion Nebula. Three components contribute roughly equally to the integrated COUP luminosity in the hard (2-8 keV) X-ray band: several OB stars, 822 lightly obscured cool stars in the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC), and 559 heavily obscured stars. ONC stars 0.5-2 pc from the center show a spatial asymmetry consistent with violent relaxation in the stellar dynamics. The obscured COUP sources concentrate around both OMC-1 molecular cores; these small-…
We present a high spatial resolution map of the columnar electron temperature (Tc) of a region to the south west of the Trapezium in the Orion Nebula. This map was derived from Hubble Space Telescope images that isolated the primary lines of HI for determination of the local extinction and of the OIII lines for determination of Tc. Although there is no statistically significant variation of Tc with distance from the dominant ionizing star theta1-Ori-C, we find small scale variations in the plane of the sky down to a few arcseconds that are compatible with the variations inferred from comparing…
Wide-field (~8' x 8') and deep near-infrared (JHKs bands) polarization images of the Orion nebulae (IRNe) around young stellar objects (YSOs), both massive and low-mass. We found the IRNe around both IRc2 and BN to be very extensive, suggesting that there might be two extended (>0.7 pc) bipolar/monopolar IRNe in these sources. We discovered at least 13 smaller-scale (~0.01-0.1 pc) IRNe around less-massive YSOs including the famous source theta^2 Ori C. We also suggest the presence of many unresolved (<690 AU) systems around low-mass YSOs and young brown dwarfs showing possible intrinsic polari…
We present spectra of the diffuse FUV (900 -- 1200 Å) emission from a region near the Orion Nebula: the first high resolution spectra of the diffuse background radiation. These observations were made using serendipitous FUSE observations and were only possible because of the strength of the diffuse emission (~3 x 10^5 photons cm-2 s-1 sr-1 A-1) and the sensitivity of the FUSE instrument. Preliminary modeling suggests that the light is scattered starlight from the Trapezium stars, primarily Theta Ori 1 C. However, a comparison of the spectra with nearby stars shows significant differences in th…
A recent article has employed the determination from groundbased images of high proper motions in the Orion Nebula Cluster to argue that JW 349, JW 355, and JW 451 are high velocity (38 km/s, 89 km/s, and 69 km/s, respectively) low mass runaway stars. We report on measurement of the proper motions of these stars using images made by the Hubble Space Telescope's WFPC2 imager and find that there is no evidence for motions above 6.2 km/s for JW 349 and 7.9 km/s for JW 355, while the motion of 5.5 km/s for JW 451 is only slightly larger than the measurement uncertainty of 3.9 km/s. We conclude tha…
We present the result of a systematic search for the iron Kalpha fluorescent line at 6.4 keV among 1616 X-ray sources detected by ultra-deep Chandra observations of the Orion Nebula Cluster and the obscured Orion Molecular Cloud 1 population as part of the Chandra Orion Ultra-deep Project (COUP). Seven sources are identified to have an excess emission at 6.4 keV among 127 control sample sources with significant counts in the 6.0-9.0 keV band. These seven sources are young stellar objects (YSOs) characterized by intense flare-like flux variations, thermal spectra, and near-infrared (NIR) counte…
This study uses cool dwarfs as sources with which to probe fluorine abundances via HF. This molecule is detected for the first time in young K-M dwarf members of an OB association. Fluorine, oxygen, and carbon abundances were derived from the HF(1--0) R9 line along with samples of OH and CO vibration-rotation lines present in high-resolution infrared spectra observed with the Phoenix spectrograph on the Gemini South Telescope. The fluorine and oxygen results obtained for these targets, still in the pre-main-sequence stage of evolution, agree well with the general trend defined for the Milky Wa…
We present a low-resolution spectroscopic survey of the Orion nebula which data we release for public use. In this article, we intend to show the possible applications of this dataset analyzing some of the main properties of the nebula. We perform an integral field spectroscopy mosaic of an area of ~5' X 6' centered on the Trapezium region of the nebula, including the ionization front to the south-east. The analysis of the line fluxes and line ratios of both the individual and integrated spectra allowed us to determine the main characteristics of the ionization throughtout the nebula. The final…
The origin of the magnetic fields in neutron stars, and the physical differences between magnetars and strongly magnetised radio pulsars are still under vigorous debate. It has been suggested that the properties of the progenitors of neutron stars (the massive OB stars), such as rotation, magnetic fields and mass, may play an important role in the outcome of core collapse leading to type II SNe. Therefore, knowing the magnetic properties of the progenitor OB stars would be an important asset for constraining models of stellar evolution leading to the birth of a neutron star. We present here th…
BIMA observations of the Orion nebula discovered a giant flare from a young star previously undetected at millimeter wavelengths. The star briefly became the brightest compact object in the nebula at 86 GHz. Its flux density increased by more than a factor of 5 on a timescale of hours, to a peak of 160 mJy. This is one of the most luminous stellar radio flares ever observed. Remarkably, the Chandra X-ray observatory was in the midst of a deep integration of the Orion nebula at the time of the BIMA discovery; the source's X-ray flux increased by a factor of 10 approximately 2 days before the ra…
We have mapped with the French submillimeter balloon-borne telescope ProNaOS the thermal emission of the dust in the M42 Orion Nebula. The map obtained is 50' by 40' with an angular resolution of about 3' in the four efficient wavelengths 200 $\mic$, 260 $\mic$, 360 $\mic$ and 580 $\mic$. The temperature and index we obtain are highly variable within the studied region: the temperature varies from 12 K to 70 K, and the spectral index from 1.1 to 2.2. The statistical analysis of the temperature and spectral index spatial distribution in this region, as well as in the other regions mapped by Pro…
Using proper motion data for 894 stars in the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) compiled by Jones & Walker in 1988, we search for binaries with apparent separations in the range 1000-5000 AU, and find an upper limit of three. Using a Monte Carlo method, we test the consistency of this result with two hypotheses: i) that the cluster contains a binary population identical to that found in the solar neighbourhood, and ii) that the cluster contains no binaries at all in this separation range. We obtain results strongly favouring the latter hypothesis. Star formation in the Galaxy is seen to occur in a va…
We report on a high-spatial-resolution survey for binary stars in the periphery of the Orion Nebula Cluster, at 5 - 15 arcmin (0.65 - 2 pc) from the cluster center. We observed 228 stars with adaptive optics systems, in order to find companions at separations of 0.13" - 1.12" (60 - 500 AU), and detected 13 new binaries. Combined with the results of Petr (1998), we have a sample of 275 objects, about half of which have masses from the literature and high probabilities to be cluster members. We used an improved method to derive the completeness limits of the observations, which takes into accoun…
Diffuse far-ultraviolet stellar emission scattered by dust grains has been observed in a region near the Orion Nebula. In addition to the scattered stellar continuum, emission and absorption features produced by molecular hydrogen have been identified. In this Letter, we present an analysis of this absorption and fluorescent emission from molecular hydrogen in Orion. We model the spectra obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer using optical depth templates and a fluorescent emission code. These results are surprising because previous studies have found little ultraviolet absor…
[Abridged] We imaged a 2' x 2' region of the Orion Nebula cluster in 1.3 mm wavelength continuum emission with the recently commissioned Combined Array for Research in Millimeter Astronomy (CARMA) and with the Submillimeter Array (SMA). Our mosaics include >250 known near-IR cluster members, of which 36 are so-called "proplyds" that have been imaged previously with the Hubble Space Telescope. We detected 40 sources in 1 mm continuum emission, and several of them are spatially resolved with our observations. Dust masses inferred for detected sources range from 0.01 to 0.5 Msun, and the average …
We present hydrodynamical simulations of the photoevaporation of a cloud with large-scale density gradients, giving rise to an ionized, photoevaporation flow. The flow is found to be approximately steady during the large part of its evolution, during which it can resemble a "champagne flow" or a "globule flow" depending on the curvature of the ionization front. The distance from source to ionization front and the front curvature uniquely determine the structure of the flow, with the curvature depending on the steepness of the lateral density gradient in the neutral cloud. We compare these simu…
Multiple optical outflows are known to exist in the vicinity of the active star formation region called Orion-South (Orion-S). We have mapped the velocity of low ionization features in the brightest part of the Orion Nebula, including Orion-S, and imaged the entire nebula with the Hubble Space Telescope. These new data, combined with recent high resolution radio maps of outflows from the Orion-S region, allow us to trace the origin of the optical outflows. It is confirmed that HH 625 arises from the blueshifted lobe of the CO outflow from 136-359 in Orion-S while it is likely that HH 507 arise…
We apply a recently developed theoretical model of helium emission to observations of both the Orion Nebula and a sample of extragalactic H II regions. In the Orion analysis, we eliminate some weak and blended lines and compare theory and observation for our reduced line list. With our best theoretical model we find an average difference between theoretical and observed intensities $<I_{predicted}/I_{observed}-1> = 6.5%$. We argue that both the red and blue ends of the spectrum may have been inadequately corrected for reddening. For the 22 highest quality lines, with $3499 Å\leλ\le6678 Å$, our…
We present results of long-slit spectroscopy in several positions of the Orion nebula. Our goal is to study the spatial distribution of a large number of nebular quantities, including line fluxes, physical conditions and ionic abundances at a spatial resolution of about 1". We find that protoplanetary disks (proplyds) show prominent spikes of T([N II]) probably produced by collisional deexcitation due to the high electron densities found in these objects. Herbig-Haro objects show also relatively high T([N II]) but probably produced by local heating due to shocks. We also find that the spatial …
Magnetic fields have been frequently invoked as a likely source of variability and confinement of the winds of massive stars. To date, the only magnetic field detected in O-type stars are those of theta 1 Ori C (HD 37022; Donati et al. 2002), the brightest and most massive member of the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC), and HD 191612 (Donati et al. 2006). Notably, theta 1 Ori C is an intense X-ray emitter, and the source of these X-rays is thought to be strong shocks occurring in its magnetically-confined wind (Babel & Montmerle 1997a, Donati et al. 2002). Recently, Stelzer et al. (2005) found signi…
We have surveyed the inner 5' of the Orion Nebula by means of Halpha and [NII] Fabry-Perot imaging spectroscopy to present a kinematical study of the Herbig-Haro objects in the nebula. The objects studied in this work are HH 202, 203, 204, 529, 269 and other associated features. For HH 202 we find new features that, because of their high velocities (up to 100 km/seg) indicate the presence of an outflow that probably is a HH flow not catalogued previously. HH 202 could be only a part of this larger outflow. Large internal motions are found in the fainter regions of HH 203-204, as well as eviden…
The radii of young pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars in the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) have been estimated using their rotation periods and projected equatorial velocities. Stars at a given effective temperature have a spread in their geometrically estimated projected radii that is larger than can be accounted for with a coeval model, observational uncertainties and randomly oriented rotation axes. It is shown that the required dispersion in radius (a factor of 2-3 full width half maximum) can be modelled in terms of a spread in stellar ages larger than the median age of the cluster, although the …
We are engaged in a comprehensive program to find reliable elemental abundances in and to probe the physical structure of the Orion Nebula, the brightest and best-resolved H II region. In the course of developing a robust extinction correction covering our optical and ultraviolet FOS and STIS observations, we examined the decrement within various series of He I lines. The decrements of the 2^3S-n^3P, 2^3P-n^3S and 3^3S-n^3P series are not in accord with caseB recombination theory. None of these anomalous He I decrements can be explained by extinction, indicating the presence of additional radi…
(shortened) Direct N-body calculations are presented of the formation of Galactic clusters using GasEx, which is a variant of the code Nbody6. The calculations focus on the possible evolution of the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) by assuming that the embedded OB stars explosively drove out 2/3 of its mass in the form of gas about 0.4 Myr ago. A bound cluster forms readily and survives for 150 Myr despite additional mass loss from the large number of massive stars, and the Galactic tidal field. This is the very first time that cluster formation is obtained under such realistic conditions. The clust…
We present 8--13 micron low resolution spectra (R~100) of 8 low-mass protostellar objects ("proplyds") in the Orion Nebula using the Long Wavelength Spectrometer (LWS) at the W. M. Keck Observatory. All but one of the sources in our sample show strong circumstellar silicate emission, with profiles that are qualitatively similar to those seen in some T Tauri and Herbig Ae/Be stars. The silicate profile in all cases is significantly flattened compared to the profile for typical interstellar dust, suggesting that the dominant emitting grains are significantly larger than those found in the inters…
The X-ray properties of twenty ~1 Myr old O, B, and A stars of the Orion Trapezium are examined with data from the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Project (COUP). On the basis of simple theories for X-ray emission, we define two classes separated at spectral type B4: hotter stars have strong winds that may give rise to X-ray emission in small- or large-scale wind shocks, and cooler stars that should be X-ray dark due to their weaker winds and absence of outer convection zones where dynamos can generate magnetic fields. Only two of the massive stars show exclusively the constant soft-spectrum emission …
We investigate the X-ray and near-infrared emission properties of a sample of pre-main sequence (PMS) stellar systems in the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) that display evidence for circumstellar disks (``proplyds'') and optical jets in Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging. Approximately 70% of ~140 proplyds were detected as X-ray sources in the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Program observation of the ONC, including ~25% of proplyds that do not display central stars in HST imaging. Many proplyds display near-infrared excesses, suggesting disk accretion is ongoing onto the central, PMS stars. Among circu…
The distance to the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) is estimated using the rotational properties of its low-mass pre main-sequence (PMS) stars. Rotation periods, projected equatorial velocities and distance-dependent radius estimates are used to form an observational sin i distribution (where i is the axial inclination), which is modelled to obtain the distance estimate. A distance of 440+/-34 pc is found from a sample of 74 PMS stars with spectral types between G6 and M2, but this falls to 392+/-32 pc when PMS stars with accretion discs are excluded on the basis of their near-infrared excess. Sinc…
The Orion Molecular Cloud 2/3 region (hereafter, OMC-2/3) and the reflection nebula NGC 1977 encompass a section of the Orion A molecular cloud undergoing vigorous star forming activity. One of the richest assemblages of protostars in the nearest 500 pc is seen in OMC-2/3, while NGC 1977 contains a cluster of over 100 young stars. In this review, we present a census of the protostars, pre-main sequence stars, and young brown dwarfs in these regions. These are identified through sub-millimeter surveys, far-red to near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy with ground-based telescopes, mid-infrared …
The results of a submillimetre wavelength spectral line survey between 455.1 -- 507.4 GHz of the Orion-KL hot cloud core are reported. A total of 254 lines were detected to a main beam brightness temperature sensitivity ~ 1 - 3 K. The detected lines are identified as being associated with 30 different molecular species or their isotopomeric variants. The strongest line detected was the J = 4-3 transition of the CO molecule. Apart from abundant diatomic rotors such as CO and CS, the spectrum is dominated by SO, SO_2 and CH_3OH and large organic molecules such as (CH_3)_2O, CH$_3CN, C_2H_3CN, C_…
We study the dynamical interaction in which the two single runaway stars AE Aurigae and mu Columbae and the binary iota Orionis acquired their unusually high space velocity. The two single runaways move in almost opposite directions with a velocity greater than 100 km/s away from the Trapezium cluster. The star iota Ori is an eccentric (e=0.8) binary moving with a velocity of about 10 km/s at almost right angles with respect to the two single stars. The kinematic properties of the system suggest that a strong dynamical encounter occurred in the Trapezium cluster about 2.5 Myr ago. Curiously en…
In this first of two companion papers on the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC), we present our analysis of a 63 Ksec Chandra HRC-I observation that yielded 742 X-ray detections within the 30'x30' field of view. To facilitate our interpretation of the X-ray image, here we collect a multi-wavelength catalog of nearly 2900 known objects in the region by combining 17 different catalogs from the recent literature. We define two reference groups: an infrared sample, containing all objects detected in the K band, and an optical sample comprising low extinction, well characterized ONC members. We show for bo…
