We study thermalization by applying gradient expansion to the Kadanoff-Baym equations of the 2PI effective action to two-loop in a theory with Dirac fermions coupled to scalars. In addition to those chemical potentials which equilibrate in the on-shell limit, we identify modes which are conserved in this approximation, but which relax when off-shell effects are taken into account. This implies that chemical equilibration does not require higher loop contributions to the effective action and is compatible with the gradient expansion. We explicitly calculate the damping time-scales of both, on- and off-shell, chemical equilibration rates. It is shown that off-shell equilibration is suppressed by the thermal width of the particles in the plasma, which explains the separation of on- and off-shell chemical equilibration time-scales.
The evolution of net-proton rapidity spectra with sqrt(s_NN) in heavy relativistic systems is proposed as an indicator for local equilibration and longitudinal expansion. In a Relativistic Diffusion Model, bell-shaped distributions in central collisions at AGS energies and double-humped nonequilibrium spectra at SPS show pronounced longitudinal collective expansion when compared to the available data. The broad midrapidity valley recently discovered at RHIC in central Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV indicates rapid local equilibration which is most likely due to deconfinement, and fas…
A rotationally-symmetrical ellipsoidal flow model is proposed for the relativistic heavy-ion collisions and compared with the 14.6 A GeV/c Si-Al and 10.8 A GeV/c Au-Au collision data. The large stopping in the heavier collision system and heavier produced particles is accounted for by using the ellipsoidal flow picture. The central dip in the proton and deuteron rapidity distributions for Si-Al collision are reproduced.
We study thermalization, hydrodynamization, and chemical equilibration in out-of-equilibrium Quark-Gluon Plasma starting from various initial conditions using QCD effective kinetic theory, valid at weak coupling. In non-expanding systems gauge bosons rapidly lose information of the initial state and achieve kinetic equilibrium among themselves, while fermions approach the equilibrium distribution only at later time. In systems undergoing rapid longitudinal expansion, both gluons and quarks are kept away from equilibrium by the expansion, but the evolution is well described by fluid dynamics ev…
A scenario of heavy resonances, called massive Hagedorn states, is proposed which exhibits a fast ($t\approx 1$ fm/c) chemical equilibration of (strange) baryons and anti-baryons at the QCD critical temperature $T_c$. For relativistic heavy ion collisions this scenario predicts that hadronization is followed by a brief expansion phase during which the equilibration rate is higher than the expansion rate, so that baryons and antibaryons reach chemical equilibrium before chemical freeze-out occurs.
In a Relativistic Diffusion Model (RDM), the evolution of net-proton rapidity spectra with sqrt(s_NN) in heavy systems is proposed as an indicator for local equilibration and longitudinal expansion. The broad midrapidity valley recently discovered at RHIC in central Au + Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)= 200 GeV suggests rapid local equilibration which is most likely due to deconfinement, and fast longitudinal expansion. Rapidity spectra of produced charged hadrons in d + Au and Au + Au systems at RHIC energies and their centrality dependence are well described in a three-sources RDM. In central co…
The chemical equilibration of the parton distribution in collisions of two heavy nuclei at the CERN Large Hadron Collider is investigated. Initial conditions are obtained from a self-screened parton cascade calculation. The onset of transverse expansion of the system is found to impede the chemical equilibration. The system initially approaches chemical equilibrium, but then is driven away from it, when the transverse velocity becomes large.
We study the kinetic equilibration of gluons produced in the very early stages of a high energy heavy ion collision in a ``self-consistent'' relaxation time approximation. We compare two scenarios describing the initial state of the gluon system, namely the saturation and the minijet scenarios, both at RHIC and LHC energies. We argue that, in order to characterize kinetic equilibration, it is relevant to test the isotropy of various observables. As a consequence, we find in particular that in both scenarios elastic processes are not sufficient for the system to reach kinetic equilibrium at RHI…
The discontinuity, or imaginary part of a self-energy at finite temperature is proportional to the rate at which the corresponding particles are produced when very few of them are present, and also to the rate at which their phase space density approaches the thermal one. These relations were suggested by Weldon [1], who demonstrated them for low orders in perturbation theory. Here we show that they are valid at leading order in a linear coupling of the produced particles, and to all orders in all other interactions of the hot plasma, if there is a separation of the time scales for the product…
The equilibration of a finite Bose system is modelled using a gradient expansion of the collision integral that leads to a nonlinear transport equation. For constant transport coefficients, it is solved in closed form through a nonlinear transformation. Using schematic initial conditions, the exact solution and the equilibration time are derived and compared to the corresponding case for fermions. Applications to the equilibration of the gluon system created initially in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, and to cold quantum gases are envisaged.
We study thermal equilibration after preheating in inflationary cosmology, which is an important step towards a comprehensive understanding of cosmic thermal history. By noticing that the problem is parallel to thermalization after a relativistic heavy ion collision, we make use of the methods developed in this context and that seek for an analytical approach to the Boltzmann equation. In particular, an exact solution for number-conserving scatterings is available for the distribution function in a Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker metric and can be utilized for the spectral evolution of kin…
Light, weakly-coupled dark sectors may be naturally decoupled in the early universe and enter equilibrium with the Standard Model bath during the epoch of primordial nucleosynthesis. The equilibration and eventual decoupling of dark sector states modifies the expansion rate of the universe, which alters the predicted abundances of the light elements. This effect can be encompassed in a time-varying contribution to $N_{\mathrm{eff}}$, the effective number of neutrino species, such that $N_{\mathrm{eff}}$ during nucleosynthesis differs from its measured value at the time of recombination. We inv…
The emission of hard real photons from thermalized expanding hadronic matter is dominated by the initial high-temperature expansion phase. Therefore, a measurement of photon emission in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions provides valuable insights into the early conditions realized in such a collision. In particular, the initial temperature of the expanding fireball or equivalently the equilibration time of the strongly interacting matter are of great interest. An accurate determination of these quantities could help to answer the question whether or not partonic matter (the quark gluon pl…
Isotropization occurs on time scales much shorter than the thermal equilibration time. This is a crucial ingredient for the understanding of collision experiments of heavy nuclei or other nonequilibrium phenomena in complex many body systems. We discuss in detail the limitations of estimates based on standard ``linear'' or relaxation-time approximations, where isotropization and thermal equilibration rates agree. For a weak-coupling $ϕ^4$-model the relaxation-time approximation underestimates the thermal equilibration time by orders of magnitude, in contrast to the isotropization time. The cha…
Using a chirally symmetric Lagrangian, which contains quarks as elementary degrees of freedom and mesons as bound states, we investigate the expansion and hadronization of a fireball, which initially contains only quarks and produces mesons by collisions. For this model, we study the time scales of expansion and thermal and chemical equilibration. We find that the expansion progresses relatively fast, leaving not necessarily enough time to establish thermal and chemical equilibrium. Mesons are produced in the bulk of the fireball rather than at a surface, at a temperature below the Mott temper…
In multiquark correlator analyses with 1/Nc classifications, it is possible to separate the scattering background and to justify the factorization of condensates, which allows us to achieve an isolated peak saturation in the QCD sum rules for multiquark currents. Then we can extract leading Nc properties of the ground state. An application to the sigma meson is demonstrated.
The thermalization process is studied in an expanding parton gas using the Boltzmann equation with two types of collision terms. In the relaxation time approximation we determine the criteria under which a time-dependent relaxation time leads to thermalization of the partons. We calculate the entropy production due to collisions for the general time-dependent relaxation time. In a perturbative QCD approach on the other hand, we can estimate the parton collision time and its dependence on expansion time. The effective `out of equilibrium' collision time differs from the standard transport relax…
We develop a general approach to the calculation of target mass and finite t=(p'-p)^2 corrections in hard processes which can be studied in the framework of the operator product expansion and involve momentum transfer from the initial to the final hadron state. Such corrections, which are usually referred to as kinematic, can be defined as contributions of operators of all twists that can be reduced to total derivatives of the leading twist operators. As the principal result, we provide a set of projection operators that pick up the "kinematic" part of an arbitrary flavor-nonsinglet twist-four…
So far, the masses of excited states of mixed orbital symmetry and in particular those of nonstrange $[{\bf 70},1^-]$ baryons derived in the $1/N_c$ expansion were based on the separation of a system of $N_c$ quarks into a symmetric core and an excited quark. Here we avoid this separation and show that an advantage of this new approach is to substantially reduce the number of linearly independent operators entering the mass formula. A novelty is that the isospin-isospin term becomes as dominant in $Δ$ as the spin-spin term in $N$ resonances.
Transport equations can be derived from quantum field theory assuming a loss of information about the details of the initial state and a gradient expansion. While the latter can be systematically improved, the assumption about a memory loss is in general not controlled by a small expansion parameter. We determine the range of validity of transport equations for the example of a scalar $g^2 Φ^4$ theory. We solve the nonequilibrium time evolution using the three-loop 2PI effective action. The approximation includes off-shell and memory effects and assumes no gradient expansion. This is compared …
The behavior of a decoupled ideal Fermi gas in a homogeneously expanding three-dimensional volume is investigated, starting from an equilibrium spectrum. In case the gas is massless and/or completely degenerate, the spectrum of the gas can be described by an effective temperature and/or an effective chemical potential, both of which scale down with the volume expansion. In contrast, the spectrum of a decoupled massive and non-degenerate gas can only be described by an effective temperature if there are strong enough self-interactions such as to maintain an equilibrium distribution. Assuming pe…
