We present evidence for hole injection into LaAlO3/LaVO3/LaAlO3 quantum wells near a polar surface of LaAlO3 (001). As the surface is brought in proximity to the LaVO3 layer, an exponential drop in resistance and a decreasing positive Seebeck coefficient is observed below a characteristic coupling length of 10-15 unit cells. We attribute this behavior to a crossover from an atomic reconstruction of the AlO2-terminated LaAlO3 surface to an electronic reconstruction of the vanadium valence. These results suggest a general approach to tunable hole-doping in oxide thin film heterostructures.
We study the Mott insulating phase of the one-dimensional Hubbard model using a local-density approximation (LDA) that is based on the Bethe Ansatz (BA). Unlike conventional functionals, the BA-LDA has an explicit derivative discontinuity. We demonstrate that as a consequence of this discontinuity the BA-LDA yields the correct Mott gap, independently of the strength of the correlations. A convenient analytical formula for the Mott gap in the thermodynamic limit is also derived. We find that in one-dimensional quantum systems the contribution of the discontinuity to the full gap is more importa…
We have investigated the transport properties of LaVO_3/SrTiO_3 Mott insulator/band insulator heterointerfaces for various configurations. The (001)-oriented n-type VO_2/LaO/TiO_2 polar discontinuity is conducting, exhibiting a LaVO_3 thickness-dependent metal-insulator transition and low temperature anomalous Hall effect. The (001) p-type VO_2/SrO/TiO_2 interface, formed by inserting a single layer of bulk metallic SrVO_3 or SrO, drives the interface insulating. The (110) heterointerface is also insulating, indicating interface conduction arising from electronic reconstructions.
Here we present polarized neutron reflectometry measurements exploring thin film heterostructures comprised of a strongly correlated Mott state, GdTiO$_3$, embedded with SrTiO$_3$ quantum wells. Our results reveal that the net ferromagnetism inherent to the Mott GdTiO$_3$ matrix propagates into the nominally nonmagnetic SrTiO$_3$ quantum wells and tracks the magnetic order parameter of the host Mott insulating matrix. Beyond a well thickness of 5 SrO layers, the magnetic moment within the wells is dramatically suppressed, suggesting that quenched well magnetism comprises the likely origin of q…
We present a theoretical approach to describing the Mott transition of electrons on a two dimensional lattice that begins with the low energy effective theory of the Fermi liquid. The approach to the Mott transition must be characterized by the suppression of density and current fluctuations which correspond to specific shape deformations of the Fermi surface. We explore the nature of the Mott insulator and the corresponding Mott transition when these shape fluctuations of the Fermi surface are suppressed without making any a prior assumptions about other Fermi surface shape fluctuations. Buil…
Electrostatic doping into an $n$-type Mott insulator Sm$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$ has been successfully achieved with use of the heterojunction with an $n$-type band semiconductor Nb-doped SrTiO$_{3}$. The junction exhibits rectifying current-voltage characteristics due to the interface band discontinuity and the formation of depleted region. The application of reverse bias electric field on this junction enables the field-effect electron doping (presumably up to 6% per Cu atom) to the Mott insulator. The electro-modulation absorption spectroscopy could clearly show a large modification of the Mott-gap s…
We study the problem of designing an artificial Mott insulator in a correlated oxide heterostructure. We consider the extreme limit of quantum confinement based on ionic discontinuity doping, and argue that a unique dimer Mott insulator can be achieved for the case of a single SrO layer in a GdTiO$_3$ matrix. In the dimer Mott insulator, electrons are localized not to individual atoms but to bonding orbitals on molecular dimers formed across a bilayer of two TiO$_2$ planes, and is analogous to the Mott insulating state of Hubbard ladders, studied in the 1990s. We verify the existence of the di…
The quasi two-dimensional Mott insulator $α$-RuCl$_3$ is proximate to the sought-after Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL). In a layer of $α$-RuCl$_3$ on graphene the dominant Kitaev exchange is further enhanced by strain. Recently, quantum oscillation (QO) measurements of such $α$-RuCl$_3$ / graphene heterostructures showed an anomalous temperature dependence beyond the standard Lifshitz-Kosevich (LK) description. Here, we develop a theory of anomalous QO in an effective Kitaev-Kondo lattice model in which the itinerant electrons of the graphene layer interact with the correlated magnetic layer …
Metallic interfaces between insulating perovskites are often observed in heterostructures combining polar and nonpolar materials. In these systems, the polar discontinuity across the interface may drive an electronic reconstruction inducing free carriers at the interface. Here, we theoretically show that a metallic interface between a Mott- and a band-insulator can also form in the absence of a polar discontinuity. The condition for the appearance of such a metallic state is consistent with the classical Mott criterion: the metallic state is stable if the screening length falls below the effec…
We have studied the critical behaviour of a doped Mott insulator near the metal-insulator transition for the infinite-dimensional Hubbard model using a linearized form of dynamical mean-field theory. The discontinuity in the chemical potential in the change from hole to electron doping, for $U$ larger than a critical value $U_c$, has been calculated analytically and is found to be in good agreement with the results of numerical methods. We have also derived analytic expressions for the compressibility, the quasiparticle weight, the double occupancy and the local spin susceptibility near half-f…
Magnetism in transition-metal compounds (TMCs) has traditionally been associated with spin degrees of freedom, because the orbital magnetic moments are typically largely quenched. On the other hand, magnetic order in 4f- and 5d-electron systems arises from spin and orbital moments that are rigidly tied together by the large intra-atomic spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Using inelastic neutron scattering on the archetypal 4d-electron Mott insulator Ca$_2$RuO$_4$, we report a novel form of excitonic magnetism in the intermediate-strength regime of the SOC. The magnetic order is characterized by ``soft…
We propose an unconventional topological quantum phase transition connecting a higher-order topological insulator (HOTI) and a featureless Mott insulator sharing the same symmetry patterns. We construct an effective theory description of the quantum critical point (QCP) by combining a bosonization approach and the coupled-stripe construction of 1D critical spin ladders. The phase transition theory is characterized by a critical dipole liquid theory with subsystem $U(1)$ symmetry whose low energy modes contain a Bose surface along the $k_x,k_y$ axis. Such a quantum critical point manifests frac…
We report on a theoretical study of the electronic interface reconstruction (EIR) induced by polarity discontinuity at a heterojunction between a polar and a nonpolar Mott insulators, and of the two-dimensional strongly-correlated electron systems (2DSCESs) which accompany the reconstruction. We derive an expression for the minimum number of polar layers required to drive the EIR, and discuss key parameters of the heterojunction system which control 2DSCES properties. The role of strong correlations in enhancing confinement at the interface is emphasized.
The Mott metal-insulator transition-a drastic manifestations of Coulomb interactions among electrons-is the first-order transition of clear discontinuity, as shown by various experiments and the celebrated dynamical mean-field theory. Recent theoretical works, however, suggest that the transition is continuous if the Mott insulator carries an exotic spin liquid with a spinon Fermi surface. Here, we demonstrate the case of a quasi-continuous Mott transition from a Fermi liquid to a spin liquid in an organic triangular-lattice system k-(ET)2Cu2(CN)3. Transport experiments performed under fine pr…
We investigate correlation physics in high-density, two-dimensional electron liquids that reside in narrow SrTiO3 quantum wells. The quantum wells are remotely doped via an interfacial polar discontinuity and the three-dimensional (3D) carrier density is modulated by changing the width of the quantum well. It is shown that even at 3D densities well below one electron per site, short-range Coulomb interactions become apparent in transport, and an insulating state emerges at a critical density. We also discuss the role of disorder in the insulating state.
At interfaces between polar and nonpolar perovskite oxides, an unusual electron-doping has been previously observed, due to electronic reconstructions. We report on remote hole-doping at an interface composed of only polar layers, revealed by high-resolution hard x-ray core-level photoemission spectroscopy. In LaAlO3/LaVO3/LaAlO3 trilayers, the vanadium valence systematically evolves from the bulk value of V3+ to higher oxidation states with decreasing LaAlO3 cap layer thickness. These results provide a synthetic approach to hole-doping transition metal oxide heterointerfaces without invoking …
We explore the experimental implications of a recent theory of the quantum dynamics of vortices in superfluids proximate to Mott insulators (cond-mat/0408329 and cond-mat/0409470). The theory predicts modulations in the local density of states in the regions over which the vortices execute their quantum zero point motion. We use the spatial extent of such modulations in scanning tunnelling microscopy measurements (Hoffman et al., cond-mat/0201348) on the vortex lattice of BSCCO to estimate the inertial mass of a point vortex. We discuss other, more direct, experimental signatures of the vortex…
