According to idealized models, a strong Kerr non-linearity may be used to build optical quantum gates for optical quantum information processing by inducing conditional phase shifts on quantum states. Recently, Shapiro (PRA 73, 062305 (2006)) argued that for a Kerr medium with non-instantaneous but fast response, essentially no phase shift is induced on two-single-photon input states, and thus a quantum gate build from such a medium cannot work. Here we show that a fast response Kerr medium induces some but very little phase shifts on a two-single-photon input state, and it is insufficient for high fidelity quantum computation. We point out that this is caused by the medium imparting spectral entanglement to the input photons. We further show that a way to circumvent this problem and achieve a high fidelity gate, is to engineer the dispersion properties of the medium to give a dominant spectral effect over the non-instantaneous response, in addition to satisfying a phase matching condition.
We propose a scheme for dispersive readout of stored energy in one mode of a nonlinear superconducting microwave ring resonator by detection of the frequency shift of a second mode coupled to the first via a Kerr nonlinearity. Symmetry is used to enhance the device responsivity while minimizing self nonlinearity of each mode. Assessment of the signal to noise ratio indicates that the scheme will function at the single photon level, allowing quantum non-demolition measurement of the photon number state of one mode. Experimental data from a simplified version of the device demonstrating the prin…
Phase-squeezed light can enhance the precision of optical phase estimation. The larger the photon numbers are and the stronger the squeezing is, the better the precision will be. We propose an experimental scheme for generating phase-squeezed light pulses with large coherent amplitudes. In our scheme, one arm of a single-photon Mach-Zehnder interferometer interacts with coherent light via a non-linear optical Kerr medium to generate a coherent superposition state. Post-selecting the single photon by properly tuning a variable beam splitter in the interferometer yields a phase-squeezed output.
Improving the precision of measurements is a significant scientific challenge. The challenge is twofold: first, overcoming noise that limits the precision given a fixed amount of a resource, N, and second, improving the scaling of precision over the standard quantum limit (SQL), 1/\sqrt{N}, and ultimately reaching a Heisenberg scaling (HS), 1/N. Here we present and experimentally implement a new scheme for precision measurements. Our scheme is based on a probe in a mixed state with a large uncertainty, combined with a post-selection of an additional pure system, such that the precision of the …
We present a detailed experimental and theoretical analysis of the dispersion and non-linear Kerr frequency shifts of plasma modes in a one-dimensional Josephson junction chain containing 500 SQUIDs in the regime of weak nonlinearity. The measured low-power dispersion curve agrees perfectly with the theoretical model if we take into account the Kerr renormalisation of the bare frequencies and the long-range nature of the island charge screening by a remote ground plane. We measured the self- and cross-Kerr shifts for the frequencies of the eight lowest modes in the chain. We compare the measur…
Any optical quantum information processing machine would be comprised of fully-characterized constituent devices for both single state manipulations and tasks involving the interaction between multiple quantum optical states. Ideally for the latter, would be an apparatus capable of deterministic optical phase shifts that operate on input quantum states with the action mediated solely by auxiliary signal fields. Here we present the complete experimental characterization of a system designed for optically controlled phase shifts acting on single-photon level probe coherent states. Our setup is b…
In this paper, with the weak cross-Kerr nonlinearity, we first present a special experimental scheme called C-path gate with which the realization of all possible bipartite POVMs of two-photon polarization states can be simpler and nearly deterministic. Following the same technique, the schemes of the realization of quantum control gates have been proposed, including the CNOT gate (1/2), Fredkin gate (1/8), Toffoli gate (2/23), CU gate and even MCU gate. All these gates are scalable with the certain probabilities which are larger than those gates in linear optics. Less resource are required an…
We consider two non-interacting two-level emitters that are coupled weakly to a one-dimensional non-linear wave guide. Due to the Kerr-like non-linearity, the wave guide considered supports -- in addition to the scattering continuum -- a two-body bound state. As such, the wave guide models a bath with non-trivial mode structure. Solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, the radiation dynamics of the two emitters, initially prepared in their excited states, is presented. Changing the emitter frequency such that the two-emitter energy is in resonance with one of the two-body bound states,…
We present a new scheme for controlling the quantum state of a harmonic oscillator by coupling it to an anharmonic multilevel system (MLS) with first to second excited state transition frequency on-resonance with the oscillator. In this scheme that we call "ef-resonant", the spurious oscillator Kerr non-linearity inherited from the MLS is very small, while its Fock states can still be selectively addressed via an MLS transition at a frequency that depends on the number of photons. We implement this concept in a circuit-QED setup with a microwave 3D cavity (the oscillator, with frequency 6.4 GH…
We show that the optical Kerr effect can be used to construct a quantum phase gate. It is well known from quantum nondemolition techniques that, as two photon field modes pass through a Kerr medium, the phase of each mode will be shifted, and the size of the phase shift will depend on the number of photons in both modes. We discuss the Hamiltonian responsible for this effect and show how this can produce an effective photon-photon interaction which corresponds to the quantum phase gate operating on two qubits each of which is represented by the elliptical polarization of one photon field. We d…

We derive an effective Hamiltonian that describes a cross-Kerr type interaction in a system involving a two-level trapped ion coupled to the quantized field inside a cavity. We assume a large detuning between the ion and field (dispersive limit) and this results in an interaction Hamiltonian involving the product of the (bosonic) ionic vibrational motion and field number operators. We also demonstrate the feasibility of operation of a phase gate based on our hamiltonian. The gate is insensitive to spontaneous emission, an important feature for the practical implementation of quantum computing.
Quantum information processing with hybrid protocols making use of discrete- and continuous-variable currently attracts of great interest because of its promising applications in scalable quantum computer and distant quantum network. By inducing a giant cross-Kerr nonlinearity between two cavities, we propose a general protocol for hybrid quantum gate and quantum entanglement with high fidelity between a stationary, discrete photonic qubit and a flying photonic state. Interestingly, our protocol can be used to conduct a controlled-Z quantum gate between a stationary microwave photon stored in …
We consider optical 1D envelope solitons in Kerr dielectric with cubic non-linearity and use two solitons configurations for modelling entangled states of photons. We calculate spin, momentum and energy of solitons on the basis of approximate solutions to the nonlinear Maxwell equations and construct entangled two solitons singlet states in special stochastic representation.
A Fokker-Planck equation for the Wigner function evolution in a noisy Kerr medium ($χ^{(3)}$ non-linearity) is presented. We numerically solved this equation taking a coherent state as an initial condition. The dissipation effects are discussed. We provide examples of quantum interference, sub-Planck phase space structures, and Gaussian versus non-Gaussian dynamical evolution of the state. The results also apply to the description of a nanomechanical resonator with an intrinsic Duffing nonlinearity.
The cross-Kerr nonlinearity (XKNL) effect can induce efficient photon interactions in principle with which photonic multiqubit gates can be performed using far fewer physical resources than linear optical schemes. Unfortunately, it is extremely challenging to generate giant cross-Kerr nonlinearities. In recent years, much effort has been made to perform multiqubit gates via weak XKNLs. However, the required nonlinearity strengths are still difficult to achieve in the experiment. We here propose an XKNL-based scheme for realizing a two-photon polarization-parity gate, a universal two-qubit gate…
A fundamental and open question is whether cross-Kerr nonlinearities can be used to construct a controlled-phase (CPHASE) gate. Here we propose a gate constructed from a discrete set of atom-mediated cross-Kerr interaction sites with counter-propagating photons. We show that the average gate fidelity $F$ between a CPHASE and our proposed gate increases as the number of interaction sites increases and the spectral width of the photon decreases, e.g. with 12 sites we find $F > 99\%$.
In this paper, we consider a method for implementing a quantum logic gate with photons whose wave function propagates in a one-dimensional Kerr-nonlinear photonic crystal. The photonic crystal causes the incident photons to undergo Bragg reflection by its periodic structure of dielectric materials and forms the photonic band structure, namely, the light dispersion relation. This dispersion relation reduces the group velocity of the wave function of the photons, so that it enhances nonlinear interaction of the photons. (Because variation of the group velocity against the wave vector is very ste…
The development of robust architectures capable of large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computation should consider both their quantum error-correcting codes, and the underlying physical qubits upon which they are built, in tandem. Following this design principle we demonstrate remarkable error correction performance by concatenating the XZZX surface code with Kerr-cat qubits. We contrast several variants of fault-tolerant systems undergoing different circuit noise models that reflect the physics of Kerr-cat qubits. Our simulations show that our system is scalable below a threshold gate infideli…
Non-linearity of the current-phase relationship of a Josephson junction is the key resource for a Josephson parametric amplifier (JPA), the only device in which the quantum limit has so far been achieved at microwave frequencies. A standard approach to describe JPA takes into account only the lowest order (cubic) non-linearity resulting in a Duffing-like oscillator equation of motion or in a Kerr-type non-linearity term in the Hamiltonian. In this paper we derive the quantum expression for the gain of JPA including all orders of the Josephson junction non-linearity in the linear response regim…
A Kerr nonlinear parametric oscillator (KPO) can stabilize a quantum superposition of two coherent states with opposite phases, which can be used as a qubit. In a universal gate set for quantum computation with KPOs, an $R_x$ gate, which interchanges the two coherent states, is relatively hard to perform owing to the stability of the two states. We propose a method for a high-fidelity $R_x$ gate by exciting the KPO outside the qubit space with parity-selective transitions, which can be implemented by only adding a driving field. In this method, the utilization of higher effective excited state…
We present a new graphical calculus that is sound and complete for a universal family of quantum circuits, which can be seen as the natural string-diagrammatic extension of the approximately (real-valued) universal family of Hadamard+CCZ circuits. The diagrammatic language is generated by two kinds of nodes: the so-called 'spider' associated with the computational basis, as well as a new arity-N generalisation of the Hadamard gate, which satisfies a variation of the spider fusion law. Unlike previous graphical calculi, this admits compact encodings of non-linear classical functions. For exampl…
Quantum superpositions of macroscopically distinct classical states, so-called Schrödinger cat states, are a resource for quantum metrology, quantum communication, and quantum computation. In particular, the superpositions of two opposite-phase coherent states in an oscillator encode a qubit protected against phase-flip errors. However, several challenges have to be overcome in order for this concept to become a practical way to encode and manipulate error-protected quantum information. The protection must be maintained by stabilizing these highly excited states and, at the same time, the syst…
We present a way for entanglement purification based on two parametric down-conversion (PDC) sources with cross-Kerr nonlinearities. It is comprised of two processes. The first one is a primary entanglement purification protocol for PDC sources with nondestructive quantum nondemolition (QND) detectors by transferring the spatial entanglement of photon pairs to their polarization. In this time, the QND detectors act as the role of controlled-not (CNot) gates. Also they can distinguish the photon number of the spatial modes, which provides a good way for the next process to purify the entangleme…
The ultrafast detection of single photons is currently restricted by the limited time resolution (a few picoseconds) of the available single-photon detectors. Optical gates offer a faster time resolution, but so far they have been mostly applied to ensembles of emitters. Here, we demonstrate through a semi-analytical model that the ultrafast time-resolved detection of single quantum emitters can be possible using an optical-Kerr-shutter (OKS) at GHz rates under focused illumination. This technique provides sub-picosecond time resolution, while keeping a gate efficiency at around 85 \%. These f…
We examine a Kerr phase gate in a semiconductor quantum well structure based on the tunnelling interference effect. We show that there exist a specific signal field detuning, at which the absorption/amplification of the probe field will be eliminated with the increase of the tunnelling interference. Simultaneously, the probe field will acquire a -πphase shift at the exit of the medium. We demonstrate with numerical simulations that a complete 180^\circ phase rotation for the probe field at the exit of the medium is achieved, which may result in many applications in information science and tele…
We analyse the possibilities for quantum state engineering offered by a model for Kerr-type non-linearity enhanced by electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), which was recently proposed by Petrosyan and Kurizki [{\sl Phys. Rev. A} {\bf 65}, 33833 (2002)]. We go beyond the semiclassical treatment and derive a quantum version of the model with both a full Hamiltonian approach and an analysis in terms of dressed states. The preparation of an entangled coherent state via a cross-phase modulation effect is demonstrated. We briefly show that the violation of locality for such an entangled co…
We describe a method to project photonic two-qubit states onto the symmetric and antisymmetric subspaces of their Hilbert space. This device utilizes an ancillary coherent state, together with a weak cross-Kerr non-linearity, generated, for example, by electromagnetically induced transparency. The symmetry analyzer is non-destructive, and works for small values of the cross-Kerr coupling. Furthermore, this device can be used to construct a non-destructive Bell state detector.
We propose a deterministic, measurement-free implementation of a cubic phase gate for continuous-variable quantum information processing. In our scheme, the applications of displacement and squeezing operations allow us to engineer the effective evolution of the quantum state propagating through an optical Kerr nonlinearity. Under appropriate conditions, we show that the input state evolves according to a cubic phase Hamiltonian, and we find that the cubic phase gate error decreases inverse-quartically with the amount of quadrature squeezing, even in the presence of linear loss. We also show h…
A Kerr-nonlinear parametric oscillator (KPO) is one of the promising devices to realize qubits for universal quantum computing. The KPO can stabilize two coherent states with opposite phases, yielding a quantum superposition called a Schrödinger cat state. Universal quantum computing with KPOs requires three kinds of quantum gates: $R_z, R_x$, and $R_{zz}$ gates. We theoretically propose a two-qubit gate $R_{zz}$ for highly detuned KPOs. In the proposed scheme, we add another two-photon drive for the first KPO. This leads to the $R_{zz}$ gate based on the driving of the second KPO depending on…
A possible two-qubit gate for optical quantum computing is the parity gate based on the weak Kerr effect. Two photonic qubits modulate the phase of a coherent state, and a quadrature measurement of the coherent state reveals the parity of the two qubits without destroying the photons. This can be used to create so-called cluster states, a universal resource for quantum computing. Here, the effect of self-phase modulation on the parity gate is studied, introducing generating functions for the Wigner function of a modulated coherent state. For materials with non-EIT-based Kerr nonlinearities, th…
Kerr parametric oscillators (KPOs), which can be implemented with superconducting parametrons possessing large Kerr nonlinearity, have been attracting much attention in terms of their applications to quantum annealing, universal quantum computation and studies of quantum many-body systems. It is of practical importance for these studies to realize fast and accurate tunable coupling between KPOs in a simple manner. We develop a simple scheme of fast tunable coupling of KPOs with high tunability in speed and amplitude using the fast transitionless rotation of a KPO in the phase space based on th…
Quantum states with nonlinear squeezing are a necessary resource for deterministic implementation of high-order quadrature phase gates that are, in turn, sufficient for advanced quantum information processing. We demonstrate that this class of states can be deterministically prepared by employing a single Kerr gate accompanied by suitable Gaussian processing. The required Kerr coupling depends on the energy of the initial system and can be made arbitrarily small. We also employ numerical simulations to analyze the effects of imperfections and to show to which extent can they be neglected.
Optical $χ^{(2)}$ non-linearity can be used for parametric amplification and producing down-converted entangled photon pairs that have broad applications. It is known that weak non-linear media exhibit dispersion and produce a frequency response. It is therefore of interest to know how spectral effects of a strong $χ^{(2)}$ crystal affect the performance. Here we model the spectral effects of the dispersion of a strong $χ^{(2)}$ crystal and illustrate how this affects its ability to perform Bell measurements and influence the performance of a quantum gates that employ such a Bell measurement. …
Cat states of the microwave field stored in high-Q resonators show great promise for robust encoding and manipulation of quantum information. Here we propose an approach to efficiently prepare such cat states in a Kerr-nonlinear resonator by the use of a two-photon drive. We show that this preparation is robust against single-photon loss. We moreover find that it is possible to remove undesirable phase evolution induced by a Kerr nonlinearity using a two-photon drive of appropriate amplitude and phase. Finally, we present a universal set of quantum logical gates that can be performed on the en…
Driven-dissipative quantum many-body systems have been the subject of many studies in recent years. They possess unique, novel classes of dissipation-stabilized quantum many-body phases including the limit cycle. For a long time it has been speculated if such a behavior, a recurring phenomenon in non-linear classical and quantum many-body systems, can be classified as a time crystal. However, the robustness of these periodic dynamics, against quantum fluctuations is an open question. In this work we seek the answer to this question in a canonical yet important system, i.e., a multi-mode cavity…
Quantum nonlinear operations for harmonic oscillator systems play a key role in the development of analog quantum simulators and computers. Since a variety of strong highly nonlinear operations are unavailable in the existing physical systems, it is a common practice to approximate them by using conditional measurement-induced methods. The conditional approach has several drawbacks, the most severe of which is the exponentially decreasing success rate of the strong and complex nonlinear operations. We show that by using a suitable two level system sequentially interacting with the oscillator, …
The realization of cross-Kerr nonlinearity is an important task for many applications in quantum information processing. In this work, we propose a method for realizing cross-Kerr nonlinearity interaction between two superconducting coplanar waveguide resonators coupled by a three-level superconducting flux qutrit (coupler). By employing the qutrit-resonator dispersive interaction, we derive an effective Hamiltonian involving two-photon number operators and a coupler operator. This Hamiltonian can be used to describe a cross-Kerr nonlinearity interaction between two resonators when the coupler…
Phase shifts induced by the Kerr effect are usually very small at the single-photon level. We propose two circuits for enhancing the cross-Kerr phase shift by applying one- and two-mode quadrature squeezing operators. Our results are based on the vector coherent state theory and can be implemented by physical operations satisfying the commutation relations for generators of the generalized special unitary group SU(1,1). While the proposed methods could be useful for the realization of quantum optical entangling gates based on Kerr nonlinear media at the single-photon level, they also indicate …
Quantum logic operations can be implemented using nonlinear phase shifts (the Kerr effect) or the quantum Zeno effect based on strong two-photon absorption. Both approaches utilize three-level atoms, where the upper level is tuned on resonance for the Zeno gates and off-resonance for the nonlinear phase gates. The performance of nonlinear phase gates and Zeno gates are compared under conditions where the parameters of the resonant cavities and three-level atoms are the same in both cases. It is found that the expected performance is comparable for the two approaches, despite the apparent diffe…
We analyze the nonlinear optical response of a four-level atomic system driven into a tripod configuration. The large cross-Kerr nonlinearities that occurr in such a system are shown to produce nonlinear phase shift of order $π$. Such a substantial shift may be observed in a cold atomic gas in a magneto-optical trap where it coupl be fasibly exploited towards the realization of a polarization quantum phase gate. The experimental feasibility of such a gate is here examined in detail.
The emerging technology of quantum neural networks (QNNs) attracts great attention from both the fields of machine learning and quantum physics with the capability to gain quantum advantage from an artificial neural network (ANN) system. Comparing to the classical counterparts, QNNs have been proven to be able to speed up the information processing, enhance the prediction or classification efficiency as well as offer versatile and experimentally friendly platforms. It is well established that Kerr nonlinearity is an indispensable element in a classical ANN, while, in a QNN, the roles of Kerr n…
We present a comprehensive theoretical study of the cross-resonance gate operation covering estimates for gate parameters and gate error as well as analyzing spectator qubits and multi-qubit frequency collisions. We start by revisiting the derivation of effective Hamiltonian models following Magesan et al. (arXiv:1804.04073). Transmon qubits are commonly modeled as a weakly anharmonic Kerr oscillator. Kerr theory only accounts for qubit frequency renormalization, while adopting number states as the eigenstates of the bare qubit Hamiltonian. Starting from the Josephson nonlinearity and by accou…
Stabilized cat codes can provide a biased noise channel with a set of bias-preserving (BP) gates, which can significantly reduce the resource overhead for fault-tolerant quantum computing. All existing schemes of BP gates, however, require adiabatic quantum evolution, with performance limited by excitation loss and non-adiabatic errors during the adiabatic gates. In this work, we apply a derivative-based leakage suppression technique to overcome non-adiabatic errors, so that we can implement fast BP gates on Kerr-cat qubits with improved gate fidelity while maintaining high noise bias. When ap…
