The Rosette Complex in the constellation of Monoceros is a magnificent laboratory for the study of star formation. The region presents an interesting scenario, in which an expanding HII region generated by the large OB association NGC 2244 is interacting with a giant molecular cloud. Inside the cloud a number of stellar clusters have formed recently. In this chapter we present a review of past and present research on the region, and discuss investigations relevant to the physics of the nebula and the molecular cloud. We also review recent work on the younger embedded clusters and individual nebulous objects located across this important star forming region.
We report on the discovery of an optical jet with a striking morphology in the Rosette Nebula. It could be the most extreme case known of an accretion disk and jet system directly exposed to strong ionization fields that impose strong effects on its disk evolution. Unlike typical optical flows, this jet system is found to have a high excitation nature mainly due to disruptive interaction with the violent environment. As a result, the extension of the highly-collimated jet and possible former episodes of the degenerated counterjet all show bow-shocked structures. Our results provide implication…
The role of turbulent fragmentation in regulating the efficiency of star formation in interstellar clouds is examined from new wide field imaging of 12CO and 13CO J=1-0 emission from the Rosette and G216-2.5 molecular clouds. The Rosette molecular cloud is a typical star forming giant molecular cloud and G215-2.5 is a massive molecular cloud with no OB stars and very little low mass star formation. The properties of the turbulent gas flow are derived from the set of eigenvectors and eigenimages generated by Principal Component Analysis of the spectroscopic data cubes. While the two clouds repr…
An investigation based on data from the spatially complete 2MASS Survey reveals that a remarkable burst of clustered star formation is taking place throughout the south-east quadrant of the Rosette Molecular Cloud. Compact clusters are forming in a multi-seeded mode, in parallel and at various places. In addition, sparse aggregates of embedded young stars are extensively distributed. In this study, we report the primary results and implications for high-mass and clustered star formation in giant molecular clouds. In particular, we incorporate for the first time the birth of medium to low-mass …
We present the results of a deep near-infrared imaging survey of the Rosette Complex. We studied the distribution of young embedded sources using a variation of the Nearest Neighbor Method applied to a carefully selected sample of near-infrared excess (NIRX) stars which trace the latest episode of star formation in the complex. Our analysis confirmed the existence of seven clusters previously detected in the molecular cloud, and identified four more clusters across the complex. We determined that 60% of the young stars in the complex and 86% of the stars within the molecular cloud are containe…
Massive protostars dramatically influence their surroundings via accretion-induced outflows and intense radiation fields. They evolve rapidly, the disk and infalling envelope being evaporated and dissipated in $\sim$ 10$^5$ years. Consequently, they are very rare and investigating this important phase of early stellar evolution is extremely difficult. Here we present the discovery of a key transient phase in the emergence of a massive young star, in which ultraviolet radiation from the new-born giant has just punctured through its natal core. The massive young stellar object AFGL 961 II is rea…
This is the first of a series of three papers on clustered star formation in the Rosette Molecular Complex. Here we investigate star formation in the interfacing layers between the expanding Rosette Nebula and its surrounding cloud, based on an analysis of the spatially complete and unbiased 2MASS data. Two medium-mass infrared clusters with ages of around 1 Myr are identified in the south and south-east arcs of the fragmented shell. The majority of the candidate cluster members in these radiation and pressure-confined regions are found to be almost uniformly distributed, roughly following the…
We present the first high spatial resolution Chandra X-ray study of NGC 2244, the 2 Myr old stellar cluster immersed in the Rosette Nebula. Over 900 X-ray sources are detected; 77% have optical or FLAMINGOS near-infrared (NIR) stellar counterparts and are mostly previously uncatalogued young stellar cluster members. All known OB stars with spectral type earlier than B1 are detected and the X-ray selected stellar population is estimated to be nearly complete between 0.5 and 3 Msun. The X-ray luminosity function (XLF) ranges from 29.4<logLx<32 ergs/s in the hard (2-8keV) band. By comparing the N…
The discovery of optical jets immersed in the strong UV radiation field of the Rosette Nebula sheds new light on, but meanwhile poses challenges to, the study of externally irradiated jets. The jet systems in the Rosette are found to have a high state of ionization and show unique features. In this paper, we investigate the evolutionary status of the jet driving sources for young solar-like stars. To our surprise, these jet sources indicate unexpected near infrared properties with no excess emission. They are bathed in harsh external UV radiation such that evaporation leads to a fast dissipati…
The Rosette Molecular Complex contains embedded clusters with diverse properties and origins. We have previously explored the shell mode of formation in the north (Regions A & B) and the massive concentrations in the ridge (Region C). Here, we explore star formation towards the south of the complex, Region D, based on data from the spatially complete 2 Micron All Sky Survey. We find that stars are forming prolifically throughout this region in a highly structured mode with both clusters and loose aggregates detected. The most prominent cluster (Region D1) lies in the north-center. This cluster…
Compelling evidence exists to show that the structure of molecular clouds is fractal in nature. In this paper, the author reiterates this view and, in addition, asserts that not only is cloud geometry fractal, but that they also have a common characteristic - they are similar in shape to the Horsehead nebula in Orion. This shape can be described by the Julia function f(x)= z^2 + c,where both z and c are complex quantities and c = -0.745429 + 0.113008i. The dynamical processes responsible for the production of these clouds seem to be turbulence followed by Brownian motion till high densities ar…
We present an extragalactic perspective of an extended stellar tidal stream wrapping around the edge-on, spiral galaxy NGC 5907. Our deep images reveal for the first time a large scale complex of arcing loops that is an excellent example of how a low-mass satellite accretion can produce an interwoven, rosette-like structure of debris dispersed in the halo of its host galaxy. The existence of this structure, which has probably formed and survived for several Gigayears, confirms that halos of spiral galaxies in the Local Universe may still contain a significant number of galactic fossils from th…
This paper presents large scale extinction maps of most nearby Giant Molecular Clouds of the Galaxy (Lupus, rho-Ophiuchus, Scorpius, Coalsack, Taurus, Chamaeleon, Musca, Corona Australis, Serpens, IC 5146, Vela, Orion, Monoceros R1 and R2, Rosette, Carina) derived from a star count method using an adaptive grid and a wavelet decomposition applied to the optical data provided by the USNO-Precision Measuring Machine. The distribution of the extinction in the clouds leads to estimate their total individual masses M and their maximum of extinction. I show that the relation between the mass contain…
We present Chandra/ACIS images of several high-mass star-forming regions. The massive stellar clusters powering these HII regions are resolved at the arcsecond level into hundreds of stellar sources, similar to those seen in closer young stellar clusters. However, we also detect diffuse X-ray emission on parsec scales that is spatially and spectrally distinct from the point source population. For nearby regions (e.g. M17 and Rosette) the emission is soft, with plasma temperatures less than 10 million degrees, in contrast to what is seen in more distant complexes (e.g. RCW49, W51). This extende…
We carried out detailed kinematic studies of the complex of multiple HI and HII shells that represent the only region of ongoing star formation in the dwarf irregular galaxy IC 1613. We investigated the ionized-gas kinematics by using Fabry--Perot H-alpha observations with the 6-m Special Astrophysical Observatory telescope and the neutral-gas kinematics by using VLA 21-cm radio observations. We identified three extended (300-350 pc) neutral shells with which the brightest HII shells in the complex of star formation are associated. The neutral-gas kinematics in the complex has been studied for…
We report the results of high-resolution (~0.2 pc) CO(1-0) and CS(2-1) observations of the central regions of three star-forming molecular clouds in the far-outer Galaxy (~16 kpc from the Galactic Center): WB89 85 (Sh 2-127), WB89 380, and WB89 437. We used the BIMA array in combination with IRAM 30-m and NRAO 12-m observations. The GMC's in which the regions are embedded were studied by means of KOSMA 3-m CO(2-1) observations. The properties the CO and CS clumps are analyzed and compared with newly derived results of previously published single-dish measurements of local clouds (OrionB South …
Star complexes are the highest level groupings in the hierarchy of the embedded young stars, clusters and associations, which obey the size - age relation. Starburst clumps, superassociations, supergiant HII regions are different titles for the groupings of the same size as complexes but with active star formation over all the grouping. The coherent star formation in the regions of violent star formation was probably triggered by external pressure. The issue of gravitational boundness of complexes and superassociations is briefly discussed
Most star complexes are in fact complexes of stars, clusters and gas clouds; term "star complexes" was introduced as general one disregarding the preferential content of a complex. Generally the high rate of star formation in a complex is accompanied by the high number of bound clusters, including massive ones, what was explained by the high gas pressure in such regions. However, there are also complexes, where clusters seems to be more numerous in relation to stars than in a common complex. The high rate of clusters - but not isolated stars - formation seems to be typical for many isolated bu…

We present UBVRI broad band, H$α$ narrow band photometry of the star forming complexes in the infra-red bright galaxy NGC 1084. Results of medium resolution spectroscopy of some of the brighter complexes are also discussed. Spectroscopic data is used to better estimate the internal reddening within the galaxy which is found to be highly variable and to calculate metallicity which is close to the solar value. Diagnostic diagram identifies the shocked regions within this galaxy. The narrow band H$α$ flux and its equivalent width are used to determine the star formation rates of the complexes and…
We report on a study of young star cluster complexes in the spiral galaxy M51. Recent studies have confirmed that star clusters do not form in isolation, but instead tend to form in larger groupings or complexes. We use {\it HST} broad and narrow band images (from both {\it WFPC2} and {\it ACS}), along with {\it BIMA}-CO observations to study the properties and investigate the origin of the e complexes. We find that the complexes are all young ($< 10$ Myr), have sizes between $\sim$85 and $\sim$240 pc, and have masses between 3-30 $\times 10^{4} M_{\odot}$. Unlike that found for isolated young…
We carry out three-dimensional MHD simulations of star formation in turbulent, magnetized clouds, including ambipolar diffusion and feedback from protostellar outflows. The calculations focus on relatively diffuse clouds threaded by a strong magnetic field capable of resisting severe tangling by turbulent motions and retarding global gravitational contraction in the cross-field direction. They are motivated by observations of the Taurus molecular cloud complex (and, to a lesser extent, Pipe Nebula), which shows an ordered large-scale magnetic field, as well as elongated condensations that are …
We present photometric and spectroscopic results for the low mass pre-main sequence (PMS) stars with spectral types K - M in the cometary globule (CG) 30/31/38 complex. We obtained multi-object high resolution spectra for the targets selected as possible PMS stars from multi-wavelength photometry. We identified 11 PMS stars brighter than V = 16.5 with ages < 5 Myr at a distance of approximately 200 pc. The spatial distribution of the PMS stars, CG clouds, and ionizing sources (O stars and supernova remnants) suggests a possible triggered origin of the star formation in this region. We confirm …
