We analytically examine the capabilities of rotation-powered pulsars as the sources of gamma-rays and show that their phase-averaged gamma-ray flux is proportional to the product of the spin-down flux and the gap trans-field thickness cubed irrespective of the emission models. Applying the scheme to the Crab pulsar, we demonstrate that the outer-gap model reproduces the observed GeV fluxes and that the slot-gap model reproduces at most twenty per cent of the observed fluxes because of the small trans-field thickness. An implication on the relationship between the gamma-ray and the spin-down fluxes is discussed.
We present results of a 3D model of optical to gamma-ray emission from the slot gap accelerator of a rotation-powered pulsar. Primary electrons accelerating to high-altitudes in the unscreened electric field of the slot gap reach radiation-reaction limited Lorentz factors of 2 x 10^7, while electron-positron pairs from lower-altitude cascades flow along field lines interior to the slot gap. The curvature, synchrotron and inverse Compton radiation of both primary electrons and pairs produce a broad spectrum of emission from infra-red to GeV energies. Both primaries and pairs undergo cyclotron r…
We investigate a stationary pair production cascade in the outer magnetosphere of a spinning neutron star. The charge depletion due to a global current, causes a large electric field along the magnetic field lines. Migratory electrons and/or positrons are accelerated by this field to radiate curvature gamma-rays, some of which collide with the X-rays to materialize as pairs in the gap. The replenished charges partially screen the electric field, which is self-consistently solved together with the distribution functions of particles and gamma-rays. If no current is injected at neither of the bo…
We investigate polarization of high-energy emissions from the Crab pulsar in the frame work of the outer gap accelerator. The recent version of the outer gap, which extends from inside the null charge surface to the light cylinder, is used for examining the light curve, the spectrum and the polarization characteristics, simultaneously. The polarization position angle curve and the polarization degree are calculated to compare with the Crab optical data. We show that the outer gap model explains the general features of the observed light curve, the spectrum and the polarization by taking into a…

We discuss non-thermal emission mechanism of the Crab-like pulsars with both a two-dimensional electrodynamical study and a three-dimensional model. We investigate the emission process in the outer gap accelerator. In the two-dimensional electrodynamical study, we solve the Poisson equation of the accelerating electric field in the outer gap and the equation of motion of the primary particles with the synchrotron and the curvature radiation process and the pair-creation process. We show a solved gap structure which produces a consistent gamma-ray spectrum with EGRET observation. Based on the t…
We investigate polarization of high-energy emissions from the Crab pulsar in the frame work of the outer gap accelerator, following previous works of Cheng and coworkers. The recent version of the outer gap, which extends from inside the null charge surface to the light cylinder, is used for examining the synchrotron radiations from the secondary and the tertiary pairs, which are produced outside the gap. We calculate the light curve, the spectrum and the polarization characteristics, simultaneously, by taking into account gyration motion of the particles. The polarization position angle curve…
Two Chandra observations have been used to search for thermal X-ray emission from within and around the Crab Nebula. Dead-time was minimized by excluding the brightest part of the Nebula from the field of view. A dust-scattered halo comprising 5% of the strength of the Crab is clearly detected with surface brightness measured out to a radial distance of 18 arcminutes. Coverage is 100% at 4 arcminutes, 50% at 12 arcminutes, and 25% at 18 arcminutes. The observed halo is compared with predictions based on 3 different interstellar grain models and one can be adjusted to fit the observation. This …
We present a modified outer gap model to study the phase-resolved spectra of the Crab pulsar. A theoretical double peak profile of the light curve containing the whole phase is shown to be consistent with the observed light curve of the Crab pulsar by shifting the inner boundary of the outer gap inwardly to $\sim 10$ stellar radii above the neutron star surface. In this model, the radial distances of the photons corresponding to different phases can be determined in the numerical calculation. Also the local electrodynamics, such as the accelerating electric field, the curvature radius of the m…
One fundamental question about pulsars concerns the mechanism of their pulsed electromagnetic emission. Measuring the high-end region of a pulsar's spectrum would shed light on this question. By developing a new electronic trigger, we lowered the threshold of the Major Atmospheric gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescope to 25 GeV. In this configuration, we detected pulsed gamma-rays from the Crab pulsar that were greater than 25 GeV, revealing a relatively high cutoff energy in the phase-averaged spectrum. This indicates that the emission occurs far out in the magnetosphere, hence exclud…
We explore particle accelerator electrodynamics in the magnetosphere of a rapidly rotating neutron star (NS). We address the importance of a self-consistent treatment of pair production, solving the Poisson equation describing the acceleration electric field, the Boltzmann equations for produced electrons and positrons, and the radiative transfer equation simultaneously. It is demonstrated that the accelerator solution is obtained if we only specify the NS spin period, magnetic dipole moment, magnetic inclination angle with respect to the rotation axis, and the NS surface temperature, and that…
We investigate the consequences of the acceleration of heavy nuclei (e.g. iron nuclei) by the Crab pulsar. Accelerated nuclei can photodisintegrate in collisions with soft photons produced in the pulsar's outer gap, injecting energetic neutrons which decay either inside or outside the Crab Nebula. The protons from neutron decay inside the nebula are trapped by the Crab Nebula magnetic field, and accumulate inside the nebula producing gamma-rays and neutrinos in collisions with the matter in the nebula. Neutrons decaying outside the Crab Nebula contribute to the Galactic cosmic rays. We compute…
We present spectral analysis of the Crab Nebula obtained with the {\it Chandra} X-ray observatory. The X-ray spectrum is characterized by a power-law whose index varies across the nebula. The variation can be discussed in terms of the particle injection from the pulsar in two different directions: the equatorial plane containing the torus and the symmetry axis along the jet. In the equatorial plane, spectra within the torus are the hardest, with photon index $α\approx 1.9$, and are almost independent of the surface brightness. At the periphery of the torus, the spectrum gradually softens in th…
We use a modified outer gap model to study the multi-frequency phase-resolved spectra of the Crab pulsar. The emissions from both poles contribute to the light curve and the phase-resolved spectra. Using the synchrotron self-Compton mechanism and by considering the incomplete conversion of curvature photons into secondary pairs, the observed phase-averaged spectrum from 100 eV - 10 GeV can be explained very well. The predicted phase-resolved spectra can match the observed data reasonably well, too. We find that the emission from the north pole mainly contributes to Leading Wing 1. The emission…
New polarimetric observations of the Crab pulsar at frequencies between 1.4 and 8.4 GHz are presented. Additional pulse components discovered in earlier observations (Moffett & Hankins 1996, astro-ph/9604163) are found to have high levels of linear polarization, even at 8.4 GHz. No abrupt sweeps in position angle are found within pulse components; however, the position angle and rotational phase of the interpulse do change dramatically between 1.4 and 4.9 GHz. The multi-frequency profile morphology and polarization properties indicate a non-standard origin of the emission. Several emission geo…
We present the influence of the special relativistic effects of aberration and light travel time delay on pulsar high-energy lightcurves and polarization characteristics predicted by three models: the two-pole caustic model, the outer gap model, and the polar cap model. Position angle curves and degree of polarization are calculated for the models and compared with the optical data on the Crab pulsar. The relative positions of peaks in gamma-ray and radio lightcurves are discussed in detail for the models. We find that the two-pole caustic model can reproduce qualitatively the optical polariza…
We develop a model for the infrared, optical and soft X-ray emission of the Crab pulsar in terms of anisotropic synchrotron emission by relativistic particles in an outer gap scenario with a single energy distribution. It is shown that such a distribution is naturally produced in an efficient pair cascade and that the energy of the primary particles are limited by synchrotron radiation. It is further shown that this synchrotron model is able to reproduce the spectral shape between the infrared and soft X-rays and also the corresponding luminosities. In particular, the long standing problem of …
The paper presents the timing and spectral analysis of several observations of the Crab pulsar performed with INTEGRAL in the energy range 3-500 keV. All these observations, when summed together provide a high statistics data set which can be used for accurate phase resolved spectroscopy. A detailed study of the pulsed emission at different phase intervals is performed. The spectral distribution changes with phase showing a characteristic reverse S shape of the photon index. Moreover the spectrum softens with energy, in each phase interval, and this behavior is adequately modeled over the whol…
We discuss the current X-ray view of the Crab Nebula and Pulsar, summarising our analysis of observations of the source with the EPIC-pn camera on board the XMM-Newton observatory. Different modes of EPIC-pn were combined in order to yield a complete scenario of the spectral properties of the Crab resolved in space and time (pulse phase). In addition we give a description of the special EPIC-pn Burst mode and guidance for data reduction in that mode. We analysed spectra for the nebula and pulsar separately in the 0.6-12.0 keV energy band. All data were processed with the SAS 6.0.0 XMM-Newton S…
Recent XMM-Newton observations reveal an extended (150") low-surface brightness X-ray halo in the supernova remnant G21.5-0.9. The near circular symmetry, the lack of any limb brightening and the non-thermal spectral form, all favour an interpretation of this outer halo as an extension of the central synchrotron nebula rather than as a shell formed by the supernova blast wave and ejecta. The X-ray spectrum of the nebula exhibits a marked spectral softening with radius, with the power-law spectral index varying from Gamma = 1.63 +/- 0.04 in the core to Gamma = 2.45 +/- 0.06 at the edge of the h…
We present a time-lapse sequence of 20 near-infrared (J- and K'-band) snapshots of the central 20x20 arcsec of the Crab pulsar wind nebula, taken at subarcsecond resolution with the Hokupa'a/QUIRC adaptive optics camera on the Gemini North Telescope, and sampled at intervals of 10 min and 24 hr. It is observed that the equatorial wisps and polar knots in the termination shock of the pulsar wind appear to fluctuate in brightness on kilosecond time-scales. Maximum flux variations of +/-24 +/-4 and +/-14 +/-4 per cent relative to the mean (in 1.2 ks) are measured for the wisps and knots respectiv…
We revise the physics of primary electron acceleration in the "slot gap" (SG) above the pulsar polar caps (PCs), a regime originally proposed by Arons and Scharlemann (1979) in their electrodynamic model of pulsar PCs. We employ the standard definition of the SG as a pair-free space between the last open field lines and the boundary of the pair plasma column which is expected to develop above the bulk of the PC. The rationale for our revision is that the proper treatment of primary acceleration within the pulsar SGs should take into account the effect of the narrow geometry of the gap on the e…
We present a high resolution Chandra X-ray observation of PSR B0540-69, the Crab-like 50 msec pulsar in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We use phase-resolved imaging to decompose the extended X-ray emission, as expected of a synchrotron nebula, from the point-like emission of the pulsar. The image of the pulsed X-ray emission shows a well-defined point-spread function of the observation, while the resolved nebula has a morphology and size remarkably similar to the Crab nebula, including evidence for a jet-like feature from PSR B0540-69. The patchy outer shell, which most likely represents the expa…
We explore the pulsar slot gap electrodynamics up to very high altitudes, where for most relatively rapidly rotating pulsars both the standard small-angle approximation and the assumption that the magnetic field lines are ideal stream lines break down. We address the importance of the electrodynamic conditions at the slot gap boundaries and the occurrence of a steady-state drift of charged particles across the slot gap field lines at very high altitudes. These boundary conditions and the deviation of particle trajectories from stream lines determine the asymptotic behavior of the scalar potent…
A new picture of pulsar high-energy emission is proposed that is different from both the traditional polar cap and outer gap models, but combines elements of each. The slot gap model is based on electron acceleration along the edge of the open field region from the neutron star surface to near the light cylinder. Along the last open field line, the pair formation front rises to very high altitude forming a slot gap, where the accelerating electric field is unscreened by pairs. The resulting radiation features both hollow cones from the lower-altitude pair cascades, seen at small viewing angles…
While supernova remnants (SNRs) have long been considered prime candidates as sources of cosmic rays, it is only recently that X-ray observations have identified several shell-type SNRs dominated by nonthermal emission, thus revealing shock-accelerated electrons with energies extending far beyond the typical thermal spectrum. Two of these SNRs have been detected as sources of VHE gamma-rays.In other remnants, discrepancies between the shock velocity and the electron temperature point to a strong cosmic ray component that has thrived at the expense of the thermal gas. Modeling of the radio, X-r…
We investigate particle accelerators in rotating neutron-star magnetospheres, by simultaneously solving the Poisson equation for the electrostatic potential together with the Boltzmann equations for electrons, positrons and photons on the poloidal plane. Applying the scheme to the three pulsars, Crab, Vela and PSR B1951+32, we demonstrate that the observed phase-averaged spectra are basically reproduced from infrared to very high energies. It is found that the Vela's spectrum in 10-50 GeV is sensitive to the three-dimensional magnetic field configuration near the light cylinder; thus, a carefu…
We present HST/STIS far-UV observations of the Crab nebula and its pulsar. Broad, blueshifted absorption arising in the nebula is seen in C IV 1550, reaching about 2500 km/s. This can be interpreted as evidence for a fast outer shell, and we adopt a spherically symmetric model to constrain the properties of this. We find that the density appears to decrease outward in the shell. A lower limit to the mass is 0.3 solar masses with an accompanying kinetic energy of 1.5EE{49} ergs. A massive 10^{51} erg shell cannot be excluded, but is less likely if the density profile is much steeper than R^{-4}…
(Abridged) We present high-resolution Chandra X-ray observations of PSR B0833-45, the 89 ms pulsar associated with the Vela supernova remnant. We have acquired two observations separated by one month to search for changes in the pulsar and its environment following an extreme glitch in its rotation frequency. We find a well-resolved nebula with a toroidal morphology remarkably similar to that observed in the Crab Nebula, along with an axial Crab-like jet. Between the two observations the flux from the pulsar is found to be steady to within 0.75%; the 3 sigma limit on the fractional increase in…
VLBI observations of the Crab pulsar with the 64-m radio telescope at Kalyazin (Russia) and the 46-m radio telescope of the Algonquin Radio Observatory (Canada) at 2.2 GHz and single-dish observations of the millisecond pulsar B1937+21 with the GBT (USA) at 2.1 GHz were conducted to probe the interstellar medium and study the properties of giant pulses. The VLBI data were processed with a dedicated software correlator, which allowed us to obtain the visibility of single giant pulses. Two frequency scales of 50 and 450 kHz were found in the diffraction spectra of giant pulses from the Crab puls…
We report the hard X-ray properties of the young Crab-like LMC pulsar PSR B0540-69, using archival RXTE PCA (2 - 60 keV) and RXTE HEXTE (15 - 250 keV) data. Making use of the very long effective exposure of 684 ks, we derived a very detailed master pulse profile for energies 2 - 20 keV. We confirm the broad single-pulse shape with a dip in the middle and with a significant fine structure to the left of the dip. For the first time pulse profiles in the 10 - 50 keV energy interval are shown. Remarkably, the coarse pulse shape is stable from the optical up to X-ray energies analogous to the case …
Observations of the 5 confirmed optical pulsars indicate that the peak emission scales according to the outer field strength. We show that this gives gives further confirmation that a simple phenomenological models such as Pacini and Salvati (1987) still have validity. Furthermore we show that the Crab pulsar exhibits unpulsed emission which further complicates any studies of the thermal emission from Isolated Neutron Stars.
We investigate the self-consistent electrodynamic structure of a particle accelerator in the Crab pulsar magnetosphere on the two-dimensional poloidal plane, solving the Poisson equation for the electrostatic potential together with the Boltzmann equations for electrons, positrons and gamma-rays. If the trans-field thickness of the gap is thin, the created current density becomes sub-Goldreich-Julian, giving the traditional outer-gap solution but with negligible gamma-ray luminosity. As the thickness increases, the created current increases to become super-Goldreich-Julian, giving a new gap so…
Recent observations of the polarisation of the optical pulses from the Crab pulsar motivated detailed comparative studies of the emission predicted by the polar cap, the outer gap and the two-pole caustics models. In this work, we study the polarisation properties of the synchrotron emission emanating from the striped wind model. We use an explicit asymptotic solution for the large-scale field structure related to the oblique split monopole and valid for the case of an ultra-relativistic plasma. This is combined with a crude model for the emissivity of the striped wind and of the magnetic fiel…
While supernova remnants (SNRs) have long been considered prime candidates for the source of cosmic rays, at least to energies up to ~10^14 eV, it is only over the past several years that direct evidence of such energetic particles in SNRs has been uncovered. X-ray observations of several shell-type SNRs have now revealed sites dominated by nonthermal emission, indicating an electron population whose energy extends far beyond the thermal distribution typical of such SNRs. In other remnants, discrepancies between the shock velocity and the electron temperature points to a strong cosmic ray comp…
We have simulated a population of young spin-powered pulsars and computed the beaming pattern and lightcurves for the three main geometrical models: polar cap emission, two-pole caustic ("slot gap") emission and outer magnetosphere emission. The light curve shapes depend sensitively on the magnetic inclination alpha and viewing angle zeta. We present the results as maps of observables such as peak multiplicity and gamma-ray peak separation in the (alpha, zeta) plane. These diagrams can be used to locate allowed regions for radio-loud and radio-quiet pulsars and to convert observed fluxes to tr…
The High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) is a system of four, imaging, atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes in Namibia, designed to detect very-high-energy gamma rays above ~ 100 GeV. During 2002--2003, H.E.S.S. collected data from two, young and energetic radio pulsars: the Crab and PSR B1706-44. We searched for pulsations at the lowest energies that H.E.S.S. is capable of detecting, aiming at a detection that would potentially differentiate between the two popular models of pulsar high-energy emission: the Polar Cap and the Outer Gap. No evidence for pulsed emission was found in the data, …
As the presumed remnant of SN1181, 3C 58 houses one of the youngest known neutron stars in the Galaxy. The properties of this young pulsar and its associated wind nebula differ considerably from those of the Crab, and may well offer a more typical example of the endpoint of massive star collapse. High resolution X-ray studies reveal structures in the inner nebula that may be associated with the pulsar wind termination shock, a jet that may be aligned with the rotation axis, and other regions of enhanced emission. Spectral variations in the PWN are consistent with the expected evolution of the …
The number of pulsars with detected emission at X-ray and gamma-ray energies has been steadily growing, showing that beams of high-energy particles are commonly accelerated in pulsar magnetospheres, even though the location and number of acceleration sites remain unsettled. Acceleration near the magnetic poles, close to the polar cap surface or to higher altitudes in the slot gap along the last open field lines, involves an electric field component due to inertial-frame dragging. Acceleration can also take place in the outer magnetosphere where charge depletion due to global currents causes a …
We present a model for the gamma-ray emission of pulsars in terms of curvature radiation by highly relativistic particles. It is shown that the injection of power-law primary particles from an outer gap and subsequent cooling by curvature radiation losses reproduces the high energy spectrum and the luminosity of pulsars. As a result a spectral break is to be expected at a photon energy of $\sim 1\thinspace{\rm GeV}$. This value does not depend on the surface magnetic field strength or on the period of the neutron star, but only involves a geometric factor. The predicted change of the spectral …
We describe a new balloon-borne instrument (PoGOLite) capable of detecting 10% polarisation from 200mCrab point-like sources between 25 and 80keV in one 6 hour flight. Polarisation measurements in the soft gamma-ray band are expected to provide a powerful probe into high-energy emission mechanisms as well as the distribution of magnetic fields, radiation fields and interstellar matter. At present, only exploratory polarisation measurements have been carried out in the soft gamma-ray band. Reduction of the large background produced by cosmic-ray particles has been the biggest challenge. PoGOLit…
Radio-quiet gamma-ray pulsars like Geminga may account for a number of the unidentified EGRET sources in the Galaxy. The number of Geminga-like pulsars is very sensitive to the geometry of both the gamma-ray and radio beams. Recent studies of the shape and polarization of pulse profiles of young radio pulsars have provided evidence that their radio emission originates in wide cone beams at altitudes that are a significant fraction (1 -10%) of their light cylinder radius. Such wide radio emission beams will be visible at a much larger range of observer angles than the narrow core components tho…
A complete set of diagnostic tools aimed at producing synthetic synchrotron emissivity, polarization, and spectral index maps from relativistic MHD simulations is presented. As a first application we consider here the case of the emission from Pulsar Wind Nebulae (PWNe). The proposed method is based on the addition, on top of the basic set of MHD equations, of an extra equation describing the evolution of the maximum energy of the emitting particles. This equation takes into account adiabatic and synchrotron losses along streamlines for the distribution of emitting particles and its formulatio…
For a subclass of polar-cap models based on electromagnetic cascades induced by curvature radiation (CR) we calculate broad-band high-energy spectra of pulsed emission expected for classical and millisecond pulsars. The spectra are a combination of curvature and synchrotron components. The spectrum of curvature component breaks at 150MeV, and neither its slope nor level below this energy are compatible with phase-averaged spectra of pulsed X-ray emission inferred from observations. Spectral properties in the combined energy range of ROSAT and ASCA (0.1 - 10 keV) depend upon the location of cyc…
