Deep images obtained with MegaCam and WIRCam on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope are used to probe the stellar content outside of the central star-forming regions of M82. Stars evolving on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) are traced along the major axis out to projected distances of 12 kpc, which corresponds to 13 disk scale lengths. The specific frequency (SF) of bright AGB stars in the outer disks of M82 and the Sc galaxy NGC 2403 are identical, suggesting that the specific star formation rates (SFR) in these galaxies during intermediate epochs were similar. This similarity in stellar content, coupled with the presence of an extended stellar disk, is consistent with M82 having been a late-type disk galaxy prior to interacting with M81. Still, there is a paucity of red supergiants (RSGs) in the outer disk of M82 when compared with NGC 2403, indicating that the SFR in the outer regions of M82 during the past ~ 0.1 Gyr has declined dramatically with respect to that in isolated late-type galaxies. A mixture of bright main sequence stars, RSGs, and AGB stars are detected out to minor axis distances of 7 kpc along the outflow. It is suggested that the young and intermediate aged stars in the extraplanar regions formed in structures similar to M82 South, and that these were subsequently disrupted by the tidal action of M82.
Using high resolution N-body simulations with hydrodynamics and star formation, we investigate interactions and the resulting starbursts in galaxies with properties typical of $z\sim 3$. We apply spectral population models to produce mock-HST images, and discuss the observed magnitude, color, and morphological appearance of our simulated galaxies in both the rest-UV and rest-visual bands.
Observations in the rest frame ultraviolet from various space missions are used to define the nearby starburst regions having the highest surface brightness on scales of several hundred pc. The bright limit is found to be 6x10^-16 ergs/cm^2-s-A-arcsec^2 for rest frame wavelength of 1830 A. Surface brightness in the brightest pixel is measured for 18 galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field having z > 2.2. After correcting for cosmological dimming, we find that the high redshift starbursts have intrinsic ultraviolet surface brightness that is typically four times brighter than low redshift starbursts.…
We study the rest-frame morphology and structural properties of optically selected starburst galaxies at redshift z < 1, using multi-waveband (BViz) high resolution images taken by the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) as part of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS). We classify galaxies into starburst, early and late types by comparing their observed spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with local templates. We find that early-type systems have significantly higher rest-frame B -band concentration indices and AGN fraction (> 25%) than late-type spirals and optically-selected st…
Rest-frame far-ultraviolet (FUV) luminosities form the `backbone' of our understanding of star formation at all cosmic epochs. These luminosities are typically corrected for dust by assuming that the tight relationship between the UV spectral slopes and the FUV attenuations of starburst galaxies applies for all star-forming galaxies. Data from seven independent UV experiments demonstrates that quiescent, `normal' star-forming galaxies deviate substantially from the starburst galaxy spectral slope-attenuation correlation, in the sense that normal galaxies are redder than starbursts. Spatially r…
The recent history of star formation in VIIZw 403 is analyzed taking into account the dynamics of the starburst blown superbubble and the restrictions that follow from X-ray observations, and from our H$α$ data. Our results show that the starburst energizing VIIZw 403 is NOT coeval, but rather the star forming phase has lasted for more than 30Myr and at such a low pace that most probably the newly processed metals will not be ejected into the intergalactic medium.
With a redshift of z=5.5 and an optical blue magnitude M_B ~ -24.2 mag (~4.5 10^12 L_sun), RDJ030117+002025 is the most distant optically faint (M_B > -26 mag) quasar known. MAMBO continuum observations at lambda=1.2 mm (185 micrometer rest-frame) showed that this quasar has a far-IR luminosity comparable to its optical luminosity. We present near-infrared J- and K-band photometry obtained with NIRC on the Keck I telescope, tracing the slope of the rest frame UV spectrum of this quasar. The observed spectral index is close to the value of alpha_nu ~ -0.44 measured in composite spectra of optic…
We present new, multi-wavelength, high-resolution imaging of the luminous, submillimeter galaxy, SMM J14011+0252, an interacting starburst at z = 2.56. Our observations comprise optical imaging from the HST, sensitive radio mapping from the VLA and CO observations from OVRO and BIMA. Aided by well-constrained gravitational amplification, we use these new data to map the distribution of gas and both obscured and unobscured starlight. The maps show that the gas and star formation are extended on scales of >= 10 kpc, much larger than starbursts seen in local ultraluminous galaxies, and larger tha…
We present optical and near-IR spectroscopy of a z=2.38 hyperluminous IR galaxy, covering the restframe wavelength range from 1000-5000A. It appears to comprise two components separated by less than 1" on the sky (<8kpc); one component (B) is blue, the other (P) is red in restframe UV-optical colours. The combined system has an optical luminosity of ~8L* and its restframe optical spectrum is characteristic of a Seyfert AGN. However, its restframe UV spectrum exhibits striking features associated with young stars, including P-Cygni lines from stellar winds and blue-shifted interstellar absorpti…
We present rest frame mid-infrared spectroscopy of a sample of 13 submillimeter galaxies, obtained using the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The sample includes exclusively bright objects from blank fields and cluster lens assisted surveys that have accurate interferometric positions. We find that the majority of spectra are well fitted by a starburst template or by the superposition of PAH emission features and a weak mid-infrared continuum, the latter a tracer of Active Galactic Nuclei (including Compton-thick ones). We obtain mid-infrared spectroscopic reds…
We investigate a very luminous Lyman-alpha emitting galaxy, associated with a z=2.3 damped absorption system in the spectrum of the QSO PHL 957. The galaxy was observed with the HST WFPC2, through a narrow filter (F410M) corresponding to rest-frame Lyman -alpha, for 41.2 ksec, with shorter exposures in F555W and F814W. The galaxy is resolved into a close (0.35 arcsec) pair of two components, CFgA and CFgB. The profile of CFgA is consistent with an exponential disk, but CFgB is closer to a bulge galaxy. Fr om the observed colours we estimate rest-frame Lyman-alpha equivalent widths of 151 Angst…
We present a panchromatic study of nearby starburst galaxies from the ultraviolet to the visible, including narrow band H(alpha) using WIYN and HST data, to determine how star formation processes affect the morphology and integrated fluxes of nearby starbursts. We find the UV/H(alpha) morphology of starbursts tend to differ, although not in a standard or predictable manner. From our sample of six nearby starbursts, three systems show a good correlation between UV and H(alpha) fluxes, but we find differences in UV and H(alpha) morphology between the other three. Occasionally we find systems wit…
A study of the distribution of OH gas in the central region of the nearby active starburst galaxy M82 has confirmed two previously known bright masers and revealed several new main line masers. Three of these are seen only at 1665 MHz, one is detected only at 1667 MHz, while the rest are detected in both lines. Observations covering both the 1665 and 1667 MHz lines, conducted with both the Very Large Array (VLA) and the Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN), have been used to accurately measure the positions and velocities of these features. This has allowed a comparison w…
We investigate the emission-line properties of galaxies with red rest-frame colors using spectra from SDSS DR4. Emission lines are detected in more than half of the red galaxies. We focus on the relationship between two emission lines commonly used as star formation rate indicators: Ha 6563 and [OII] 3727. There is a strong bimodality in [OII]/Ha ratio in the full SDSS sample which closely corresponds to the bimodality in rest-frame color. Nearly all of the line-emitting red galaxies have line ratios typical of various types of AGN -- most commonly LINERs, a small fraction of transition object…
Rest-frame far-ultraviolet (FUV) luminosities form the `backbone' of our understanding of star formation at all cosmic epochs. FUV luminosities are typically corrected for dust by assuming that extinction indicators which have been calibrated for local starbursting galaxies apply to all star-forming galaxies. I present evidence that `normal' star-forming galaxies have systematically redder UV/optical colors than starbursting galaxies at a given FUV extinction. This is attributed to differences in star/dust geometry, coupled with a small contribution from older stellar populations. Folding in d…
We have detected the radio recombination lines H91-alpha and H92-alpha with rest frequencies of 8.6 GHz and 8.3 GHz from the starburst nucleus NGC 3256 at an angular resolution of 16.4" x 9.6" using the Australia Telescope Compact Array and at an angular resolution of 12.0" x 2.9" using the VLA. The line was detected at ~ 1 mJy/beam peak with a width of 160 km/s with the ATCA and at ~ 0.5 mJy/beam peak with a width of 114 km/s with the VLA. Modelling the line emitting region as a collection of HII regions, we derive constraints on the required number of HII regions, their temperature, density,…
We use rest frame ultraviolet (UV), B, and V band images of five nearby (z<0.02) interacting and/or starbursting galaxies to simulate deep HST observations of peculiar galaxies at medium to high redshifts. In particular, we simulate Hubble Deep Field (HDF) observations in the F606W and F814W filters of starburst galaxies in the redshift range z~0.5---2.5 by explicitly account for the combined effects of band-shifting and surface brightness dimming. We find that extended morphological features remain readily visible in the long exposures typical of the HDF out to redshifts of ~ 1. For systems a…
Context. Gas ionized by starburst activity radiates radio recombination lines (RRLs), from which one can derive the plasma conditions and the number of massive stars formed in the burst, free of dust obscuration effects. Aims. We aimed to find RRL emission from additional starburst systems and to use the line properties to estimate the properties of the ionized gas. Methods. We conducted a search for RRLs in the nearby extragalactic starburst or Seyfert galaxies NGC 1808, the Circinus galaxy, NGC 4038/9, II Zw 40, NGC 6221, NGC 7552, IRAS 18325-5926, IC 5063, and VV 114. We used the VLA and th…
We present deep 2.2 micron imaging of twelve gamma-ray burst host galaxies. Template spectral energy distributions are fit to the multiband photometry between visible and near-infrared wavelengths to derive a better constraint on the stellar mass of these galaxies. The internal extinction in the host galaxies is estimated using the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) slope. We find that the extinction corrected star-formation rates (SFRs) of the galaxies are significantly larger than rates derived from emission lines in the visible or the UV continuum. The ratio between the extinction corrected SFRs a…
Chandra has resolved the starburst nuclear region of the face-on grand-design spiral M83. Eighty-one point sources are detected above 3.5 sigma in the ACIS S3 image, and 15 of them are within the inner 16-arcsec region of the galaxy. A point source with L_x ~ 3 x 10^(38) erg/s in the 0.3--8.0 keV band is found to coincide with the infra-red nuclear photometric peak, one of the two dynamical nuclei of the galaxy. No point-like sources are resolved (at a 2.5-sigma level) at the centre of symmetry of the outer optical isophote ellipses, suspected to be another dynamical nucleus. About 50% of the …
In order to study the origin of the strong Lyman-alpha emission of high-redshift starburst galaxies we observed and modeled the emission of the z = 3.304 galaxy FDF-4691 (rest-frame EW = 103 Angstroem). The observations show that FDF-4691 is a young starburst galaxy with a (for this redshift) typical metallicity. The broad, double-peaked profile of the Lyman-alpha emission line can be explained assuming a highly turbulent emission region in the inner part of the starburst galaxy, and a surrounding extended shell of low-density neutral gas with a normal dust/gas ratio and with Galactic dust pro…
We present analysis of HST U,V,I, and Halpha images of the peculiar Local Group irregular galaxy IC 10. The images are used to determine the nature of the stellar products in a portion of the recent starburst in this galaxy. We identified 13 stellar associations and clusters, two of which are probably old (>350 Myr) and the rest of which are young (4-30 Myr) and presumably formed in the starburst. We found the following: 1) The slope of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) for 6.3--18 Msolar stars formed in the starburst lies between two limiting cases: a value of -1.9+/-0.4 under the assum…
Heckman et al. (2005) used the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) UV imaging survey to show that there exists a rare population of nearby compact UV-luminous galaxies (UVLGs) that closely resembles high redshift Lyman break galaxies (LBGs). We present HST images in the UV, optical, and Ha, and resimulate them at the depth and resolution of the GOODS/UDF fields to show that the morphologies of UVLGs are also similar to those of LBGs. Our sample of 8 LBG analogs thus provides detailed insight into the connection between star formation and LBG morphology. Faint tidal features or companions can be …
We have studied the face-on, barred spiral M83 (NGC 5236) with Chandra. Eighty-one point sources are detected (above 3.5-sigma) in the ACIS S3 image: 15 of them are within the inner 16 arcsec region (starburst nucleus, resolved for the first time with Chandra), and 23 within the inner 60 arcsec (including the bar). The luminosity distributions of the sources in the inner 60 arcsec region (nucleus and stellar bar) is a single power law, which we interpret as due to continuous, ongoing star formation. Outside this inner region, there is a smaller fraction of bright sources, which we interpret as…
Imaging in the restframe ultraviolet has proven to be an effective and vital means of tracing dynamical patterns of star formation in galaxies out to high redshifts. Using images from the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT), Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and complementary groundbased telescopes, we have investigated the starburst activity and associated dynamics in nearby early-type disk galaxies. Concentrating on the starburst-ring (R)SA(r)ab galaxy M94 (NGC 4736), we find compelling evidence for bar-mediated resonances as the primary drivers of evolution at the present epoch. Similar ring-bar…
We use near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy obtained with GNIRS on Gemini, NIRSPEC on KECK, and ISAAC on the VLT to study the rest-frame optical continua of three `Distant Red Galaxies' (having Js - Ks > 2.3) at z>2. All three galaxy spectra show the Balmer/4000 Angstrom break in the rest-frame optical. The spectra allow us to determine spectroscopic redshifts from the continuum with an estimated accuracy dz/(1+z) ~ 0.001-0.04. These redshifts agree well with the emission line redshifts for the 2 galaxies with Halpha emission. This technique is particularly important for galaxies that are faint in…
We report the detection of CO emission from the optically luminous, radio-quiet quasar J140955.5+562827, at a redshift z_CO =2.583. We also present VLA continuum mapping results and VLBA high spatial resolution observations at 1.4 GHz. Both the CO(3-2) and CO(7-6) emission lines are detected using the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer. The 3-2/7-6 line luminosity ratio is about 1/3 indicating the presence of warm and dense molecular gas with an estimated mass of 6x10^10 Msun. The infrared-to-CO luminosity ratio is L_FIR/L'_CO(1-0) \approx 500 Lsun (Kkms^-1 pc^2)^-1,comparable with values fou…
We present neutral hydrogen, ultraviolet, optical and near-infrared imaging, and optical spectroscopy, of Minkowski's Object (MO), a star forming peculiar galaxy near NGC 541. The observations strengthen evidence that star formation in MO was triggered by the radio jet from NGC 541. Key new results are the discovery of a 4.9E8 solar mass double HI cloud straddling the radio jet downstream from MO, where the jet changes direction and decollimates; strong detections of MO, also showing double structure, in UV and H-alpha; and numerous HII regions and associated clusters in MO. In UV, MO resemble…
Many recent estimates of the star formation rate density at high redshift rely on rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) data. These are highly sensitive to dust absorption. Applying a correlation between the far-infrared (FIR) to UV flux ratio and UV color found in a local starbursts to galaxy samples out to z ~ 3, one can account for most of the FIR background. However, the correlation is based on a sample that does not include the most extreme starbursts, Ultra Luminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIGs). Our new UV images of ULIGs show that their FIR fluxes are underpredicted by this correlation by factors ra…
NGC 3310 is a local galaxy with an intense, ongoing starburst thought to result from a merger with a companion galaxy. It has several known tidal features in the northwest and southern regions around the main galactic disc, as well as a closed, tidal loop emerging from the eastern side of the disc and rejoining in the north. This loop appears to be distinct from the rest of the shells surrounding NGC3310 and is the first of its kind to be detected in a starburst galaxy. In this work, we present UBVR photometry to faint surface brightness levels of this debris network, and we explore various st…
The decrease, since z=1, of the rest-frame UV luminosity density is related to global changes in morphology, color and emission lines properties of galaxies. This is apparently followed by a similar decrease of the rest-frameIR luminosity density. I discuss the relative contribution from the different galaxy morphological types to the observed evolution. The main contributors are compact galaxies observed in large number at optical wavelengths, and the sparse population of extincted & powerful starbursts observed by ISO. This latter population is made of large and massive galaxies mostly found…
We present Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) images of the prototypical edge-on starburst galaxies M82 and NGC253. Our initial analysis is restricted to the complex of ultraviolet (UV) filaments in the starburst-driven outflows in the galaxy halos. The UV luminosities in the halo are too high to be provided by shock-heated or photoionized gas except perhaps in the brightest filaments in M82, suggesting that most of the UV light is the stellar continuum of the starburst scattered into our line of sight by dust in the outflow. This interpretation agrees with previous results from optical imaging…
In this Letter we present the first images of the emission of SiO and H13CO+ in the nucleus of the starburst galaxy M82. Contrary to other molecular species that mainly trace the distribution of the star-forming molecular gas within the disk, the SiO emission extends noticeably out of the galaxy plane. The bulk of the SiO emission is restricted to two major features. The first feature, referred to as the SiO supershell, is an open shell of 150 pc diameter, located 120 pc west from the galaxy center. The SiO supershell represents the inner front of a molecular shell expanding at 40 km/s, produc…
