The paper presents a new stiffness modelling method for multi-chain parallel robotic manipulators with flexible links and compliant actuating joints. In contrast to other works, the method involves a FEA-based link stiffness evaluation and employs a new solution strategy of the kinetostatic equations, which allows computing the stiffness matrix for singular postures and to take into account influence of the internal forces. The advantages of the developed technique are confirmed by application examples, which deal with stiffness analysis of the Orthoglide manipulator.

The paper focuses on the stiffness modeling of robotic manipulators with gravity compensators. The main attention is paid to the development of the stiffness model of a spring-based compensator located between sequential links of a serial structure. The derived model allows us to describe the compensator as an equivalent non-linear virtual spring integrated in the corresponding actuated joint. The obtained results have been efficiently applied to the stiffness modeling of a heavy industrial robot of the Kuka family.
Starting from the definition of a stiffness matrix, the authors present a new formulation of the Cartesian stiffness matrix of parallel mechanisms. The proposed formulation is more general than any other stiffness matrix found in the literature since it can take into account the stiffness of the passive joints, it can consider additional compliances in the joints or in the links and it remains valid for large displacements. Then, the validity, the conservative property, the positive definiteness and the relation with other formulations of stiffness matrices are discussed theoretically. Finally…
The purpose of this research is to design, fabricate and test a tendon driven a continuum soft robot with three modular segments, each of which has a tunable stiffness enabled by layer jamming technology. Compared with previous studies, the robotic arm design of this project has a modular structure, which means the length of the robotic arm can be adjusted by addition of extra arm modules/segments to the existing robotic prototype. Furthermore, the new arm prototype supports motion within a 3-dimensional space. To achieve the goals, the design and fabrication for the variable stiffness robotic…

We propose a novel tri-fingered soft robotic gripper with decoupled stiffness and shape control capability for performing adaptive grasping with minimum system complexity. The proposed soft fingers adaptively conform to object shapes facilitating the handling of objects of different types, shapes, and sizes. Each soft gripper finger has an inextensible articulable backbone and is actuated by pneumatic muscles. We derive a kinematic model of the gripper and use an empirical approach to map input pressures to stiffness and bending deformation of fingers. We use these mappings to achieve decouple…

The paper presents advancement of the matrix structural analysis technique (MSA) for stiffness modeling of robotic manipulators. In contrast to the classical MSA, it can be applied to both parallel and serial manipulators composed of flexible and rigid links connected by rigid, passive or elastic joints with multiple external loadings. The manipulator stiffness model is presented as a set of basic equations describing the link elasticities that are supplemented by a set of constraints describing connections between links. These equations are aggregated straightforwardly in a common linear syst…

The paper focuses on the stiffness analysis of multi-link serial planar manipulators, which may demonstrate nonlinear stiffness behavior under the compressive loading. Two important cases are considered, where the manipulator has either a straight or non-straight initial configuration. It was proved that in the first case the loading may cause the buckling if it exceeds some critical value, and the manipulator suddenly changes its straight shape and stiffness properties. For computing this critical force, a general eigenvalue-based technique was proposed that can be applied to any multi-link s…

Loss of upper extremity motor control and function is an unremitting symptom in post-stroke patients. This would impose hardships on accomplishing their daily life activities. Supernumerary robotic limbs (SRLs) were introduced as a solution to regain the lost Degrees of Freedom (DoFs) by introducing an independent new limb. The actuation systems in SRL can be categorized into rigid and soft actuators. Soft actuators have proven advantageous over their rigid counterparts through intrinsic safety, cost, and energy efficiency. However, they suffer from low stiffness, which jeopardizes their accur…

The paper presents a methodology to enhance the stiffness analysis of parallel manipulators with parallelogram-based linkage. It directly takes into account the influence of the external loading and allows computing both the non-linear ``load-deflection" relation and relevant rank-deficient stiffness matrix. An equivalent bar-type pseudo-rigid model is also proposed to describe the parallelogram stiffness by means of five mutually coupled virtual springs. The contributions of this paper are highlighted with a parallelogram-type linkage used in a manipulator from the Orthoglide family.
The paper focuses on the enhanced stiffness modeling of robotic manipulators by taking into account influence of the external force/torque acting upon the end point. It implements the virtual joint technique that describes the compliance of manipulator elements by a set of localized six-dimensional springs separated by rigid links and perfect joints. In contrast to the conventional formulation, which is valid for the unloaded mode and small displacements, the proposed approach implicitly assumes that the loading leads to the non-negligible changes of the manipulator posture and corresponding a…

This paper proposes a new variable stiffness soft gripper that enables high-performance grasping tasks in industrial applications. The design of the proposed monolithic soft gripper includes a middle bellow and two side bellows (i.e., fingers). The positions of the fingers are regulated by adjusting the negative pressure in the middle bellow actuator via an on-off controller. The stiffness of the soft gripper is modulated by controlling the positive pressure in the fingers through the use of a proportional air-pressure regulator. It is experimentally shown that the proposed soft gripper can mo…
Force control is essential for medical robots when touching and contacting the patient's body. To increase the stability and efficiency in force control, an Adaption Module could be used to adjust the parameters for different contact situations. We propose an adaptive controller with an Adaption Module which can produce control parameters based on force feedback and real-time stiffness detection. We develop methods for learning the optimal policies by value iteration and using the data generated from those policies to train the Adaptive Module. Via numerical simulation and experimental assessment, this study examines the use of origami folding to develop robotic jumping mechanisms with tailored nonlinear stiffness to improve dynamic performance. Specifically, we use Tachi-Miura Polyhedron (TMP) bellow origami -- which exhibits a nonlinear "strain-softening" force-displacement curve -- as a jumping robotic skeleton with embedded energy storage. TMP's nonlinear stiffness allows it to store more energy than a linear spring and offers improved jumping height and airtime. Moreover, the nonlinearity can be tailored by directly changing the…

The paper focuses on the stiffness modeling of parallel manipulators composed of non-perfect serial chains, whose geometrical parameters differ from the nominal ones. In these manipulators, there usually exist essential internal forces/torques that considerably affect the stiffness properties and also change the end-effector location. These internal load-ings are caused by elastic deformations of the manipulator ele-ments during assembling, while the geometrical errors in the chains are compensated for by applying appropriate forces. For this type of manipulators, a non-linear stiffness modeli…
This study examines a biology-inspired approach of using reconfigurable articulation to reduce the control requirement for soft robotic arms. We construct a robotic arm by assembling Kresling origami modules that exhibit predictable bistability. Via switching between their two stable states, these origami modules can behave either like a flexible joint with low bending stiffness or like a stiff link with high stiffness, without requiring any continuous power supply. In this way, the robotic arm can exhibit pseudo-linkage kinematics with lower control requirements and improved motion accuracy. …

Tissue deformation in ultrasound (US) imaging leads to geometrical errors when measuring tissues due to the pressure exerted by probes. Such deformation has an even larger effect on 3D US volumes as the correct compounding is limited by the inconsistent location and geometry. This work proposes a patient-specified stiffness-based method to correct the tissue deformations in robotic 3D US acquisitions. To obtain the patient-specified model, robotic palpation is performed at sampling positions on the tissue. The contact force, US images and the probe poses of the palpation procedure are recorded…

These matrices are integral parts of the manipulator lum…

Passive elastic elements can contribute to stability, energetic efficiency, and impact absorption in both biological and robotic systems. They also add dynamical complexity which makes them more challenging to model and control. The impact of this added complexity to autonomous learning has not been thoroughly explored. This is especially relevant to tendon-driven limbs whose cables and tendons are inevitably elastic. Here, we explored the efficacy of autonomous learning and control on a simulated bio-plausible tendon-driven leg across different tendon stiffness values. We demonstrate that inc…

The key insight of our design is attaching torsional springs to timing belts to create a variable stiffness linear spring. In an antagonistic pair, varying the distance b…
Applications of rolling diaphragm transmissions for medical and teleoperated robotics are of great interest, due to the low friction of rolling diaphragms combined with the power density and stiffness of hydraulic transmissions. However, the stiffness-enabling pressure preloads can form a tradeoff against bearing loading in some rolling diaphragm layouts, and transmission setup can be difficult. Utilization of cable drives compliment the rolling diaphragm transmission's advantages, but maintaining cable tension is crucial for optimal and consistent performance. Springs are commonly used in wearable robotic devices to provide assistive joint torque without the need for motors and batteries. However, different tasks (such as walking or running) and different users (such as athletes with strong legs or the elderly with weak legs) necessitate different assistive joint torques, and therefore, springs with different stiffness. Variable stiffness springs are a special class of springs which can exert more or less torque upon the same deflection, provided that the user is able to change the stiffness of the spring. In this paper, we present a novel variable …
