I describe the current status of MCnet tools for validating the performance of event generator simulations against data, and for tuning their phenomenological free parameters. For validation, the Rivet toolkit is now a mature and complete system, with a large library of prominent benchmark analyses. For tuning, the Professor system has recently completed its first tunes of Pythia 6, with substantial improvements on the existing default tune and potential to greatly aid the setup of new generators for LHC studies.
We present the Monte Carlo generator tuning strategy followed, and the tools developed, by the MCnet CEDAR project. We also present new tuning results for the Pythia 6.4 event generator which are based on event shape and hadronisation observables from e+e- experiments, and on underlying event and minimum bias data from the Tevatron. Our new tunes are compared to existing tunes and to Peter Skands' new "Perugia" tunes.
We summarise the motivation for, and the status of, the tools developed by CEDAR/MCnet for validating and tuning Monte Carlo event generators for the LHC against data from previous colliders. We then present selected preliminary results from studies of event shapes and hadronisation observables from e+e- colliders, and of minimum bias and underlying event observables from the Tevatron, and comment on the approach needed with early LHC data to best exploit the potential for new physics discoveries at the LHC in the next few years.
I describe the work of the CEDAR collaboration in developing tools for tuning and validating Monte Carlo event generator programs. The core CEDAR task is to interface the Durham HepData database of experimental measurements to event generator validation tools such as the UCL JetWeb system - this has necessitated the migration of HepData to a new relational database system and a Java-based interaction model. The "number crunching" part of JetWeb is also being upgraded, from the Fortran HZTool library to the new C++ Rivet system and a generator interfacing layer named RivetGun. Finally, I descri…
MC models of multiple partonic scattering inevitably introduce many free parameters, either fundamental to the models or from their integration with MC treatments of primary-scattering evolution. This non-perturbative and non-factorisable physics in particular cannot currently be constrained from theoretical principles, and hence parameter optimisation against experimental data is required. This process is commonly referred to as MC tuning. We summarise the principles, problems and history of MC tuning, and the still-evolving modern approach to both model optimisation and estimation of modelli…
Evaluating parton density systematic uncertainties in Monte~Carlo event generator predictions has long been achieved by reweighting between the original and systematic PDFs for the initial state configurations of the individual simulated events. This weighting is now pre-emptively performed in many generators, providing convenient weight factors for PDF and scale systematics -- including for NLO calculations where counterterms make the weight calculation complex. This note attempts a pedagogical discussion and empirical study of the consequences of neglecting the effects of PDF variations on t…
A method for tuning parameters in Monte Carlo generators is described and applied to a specific case. The method works in the following way: each observable is generated several times using different values of the parameters to be tuned. The output is then approximated by some analytic form to describe the dependence of the observables on the parameters. This approximation is used to find the values of the parameter that give the best description of the experimental data. This results in significantly faster fitting compared to an approach in which the generator is called iteratively. As an ap…
Monte Carlo Event Generators are important tools for the understanding of physics at particle colliders like the LHC. In order to best predict a wide variety of observables, the optimization of parameters in the Event Generators based on precision data is crucial. However, the simultaneous optimization of many parameters is computationally challenging. We present an algorithm that allows to tune Monte Carlo Event Generators for high dimensional parameter spaces. To achieve this we first split the parameter space algorithmically in subspaces and perform a Professor tuning on the subspaces with …
The CEDAR collaboration is extending and combining the JetWeb and HepData systems to provide a single service for tuning and validating models of high-energy physics processes. The centrepiece of this activity is the fitting by JetWeb of observables computed from Monte Carlo event generator events against their experimentally determined distributions, as stored in HepData. Caching the results of the JetWeb simulation and comparison stages provides a single cumulative database of event generator tunings, fitted against a wide range of experimental quantities. An important feature of this integr…
A World Wide Web interface to a Monte Carlo validation and tuning facility is described. The aim of the package is to allow rapid and reproducible comparisons to be made between detailed measurements at high-energy physics colliders and general physics simulation packages. The package includes a relational database, a Java servlet query and display facility, and clean interfaces to simulation packages and their parameters.
The parameters tuning of event generators is a research topic characterized by complex choices: the generator response to parameter variations is difficult to obtain on a theoretical basis, and numerical methods are hardly tractable due to the long computational times required by generators. Event generator tuning has been tackled by parametrisation-based techniques, with the most successful one being a polynomial parametrisation. In this work, an implementation of tuning procedures based on artificial neural networks is proposed. The implementation was tested with closure testing and experime…
To measure the $R$ value in an energy scan experiment with $\ee$ collisions, precise calculation of initial state radiation is required in event generators. We present an event generator for this consideration, which incorporates initial state radiation effects up to the second order accuracy, and the radiative correction factor is calculated using the totally hadronic Born cross section. The measured exclusive processes are generated according to their cross sections, while the unknown processes are generated using the LUND Area Law model, and its parameters are tuned with data collected at $…
Apprentice is a tool developed for event generator tuning. It contains a range of conceptual improvements and extensions over the tuning tool Professor. Its core functionality remains the construction of a multivariate analytic surrogate model to computationally expensive Monte-Carlo event generator predictions. The surrogate model is used for numerical optimization in chi-square minimization and likelihood evaluation. Apprentice also introduces algorithms to automate the selection of observable weights to minimize the effect of mis-modeling in the event generators. We illustrate our improveme…
Data analyses in hadron collider physics depend on background simulations performed by Monte Carlo (MC) event generators. However, calculational limitations and non-perturbative effects require approximate models with adjustable parameters. In fact, we need to simultaneously tune many phenomenological parameters in a high-dimensional parameter-space in order to make the MC generator predictions fit the data. It is desirable to achieve this goal without spending too much time or computing resources iterating parameter settings and comparing the same set of plots over and over again. We present …
This is the manual and user guide for the Rivet system for the validation and tuning of Monte Carlo event generators for high energy physics. As well as the core Rivet library, this manual describes the usage of the rivet program and the AGILe generator interface library. The depth and level of description is chosen for users of the system, starting with the basics of using validation code written by others, and then covering sufficient details to write new Rivet analyses and calculational components.
In this article we describe Professor, a new program for tuning model parameters of Monte Carlo event generators to experimental data by parameterising the per-bin generator response to parameter variations and numerically optimising the parameterised behaviour. Simulated experimental analysis data is obtained using the Rivet analysis toolkit. This paper presents the Professor procedure and implementation, illustrated with the application of the method to tunes of the Pythia 6 event generator to data from the LEP/SLD and Tevatron experiments. These tunes are substantial improvements on existin…
A brief description of the IntraNuclear cascade, preequilibrium, evaporation, fission, coalescence, and Fermi breakup models used by the last versions of our CEM and LAQGSM event generators is presented, with a focus on our latest development of all these models. The recently developed "S" and "G" versions of our codes, that consider multifragmentation of nuclei formed after the preequilibrium stage of reactions when their excitation energy is above 2A MeV using the Statistical Multifragmentation Model (SMM) code by Botvina et al. ("S" stands for SMM) and the fission-like binary-decay model GE…
In this proceedings I discuss the general strategy and impact of tuning Monte-Carlo event generators for physics processes involving top quarks. Special emphasis is put on disinguishing the different usages of event generators in the experiments and the subsequent implications on the tuning process. The current status of determining tune uncertainties is also discussed.
We present 9 new tunes of the pT-ordered shower and underlying-event model in PYTHIA 6.4. These "Perugia" tunes update and supersede the older "S0" family. The data sets used to constrain the models include hadronic Z0 decays at LEP, Tevatron minimum-bias data at 630, 1800, and 1960 GeV, Tevatron Drell-Yan data at 1800 and 1960 GeV, and SPS min-bias data at 200, 546, and 900 GeV. In addition to the central parameter set, called "Perugia 0", we introduce a set of 8 related "Perugia Variations" that attempt to systematically explore soft, hard, parton density, and colour structure variations in …
General-purpose Monte Carlo event generators have become important tools in particle physics, allowing the simulation of exclusive hadronic final states. In this article we examine the Pythia 8 generator, in particular focusing on its parton-shower algorithms. Some relevant new additions to the code are introduced, that should allow for a better description of data. We also implement and compare with 2 to 3 real-emission QCD matrix elements, to check how well the shower algorithm fills the phase space away from the soft and collinear regions. A tuning of the generator to Tevatron data is perfo…
Next generation neutrino oscillation experiments utilize details of hadronic final states to improve the precision of neutrino interaction measurements. The hadronic system was often neglected or poorly modeled in the past, but they have significant effects on high precision neutrino oscillation and cross-section measurements. Among the physics of hadronic systems in neutrino interactions, the hadronization model controls multiplicities and kinematics of final state hadrons from the primary interaction vertex. For relatively high invariant mass events, many neutrino experiments rely on the PYT…
The parameters in Monte Carlo (MC) event generators are tuned on experimental measurements by evaluating the goodness of fit between the data and the MC predictions. The relative importance of each measurement is adjusted manually in an often time-consuming, iterative process to meet different experimental needs. In this work, we introduce several optimization formulations and algorithms with new decision criteria for streamlining and automating this process. These algorithms are designed for two formulations: bilevel optimization and robust optimization. Both formulations are applied to the d…
In this paper we present a new Monte Carlo event generator ReneSANCe for simulation of processes at electron-positron colliders. In the current release of the generator the Bhabha scattering ($e^+e^- \to e^-e^+$) and Higgs-strahlung ($e^+e^- \to ZH$) process are implemented. Based on the SANC (Support for Analytic and Numeric Calculations for experiments at colliders) modules, the new generator takes into account complete one-loop and some higher-order electroweak radiative corrections with finite particle masses and polarizations. The new generator effectively operates in the collinear region…
The merging procedure of tree-level matrix elements and the subsequent parton shower as implemented in the new event generator SHERPA will be validated for the example of single gauge boson production at the LHC. The validation includes consistency checks and comparisons to results obtained from other event generators. In particular, comparisons with full next-to-leading order QCD calculations prove SHERPA's ability to correctly account for additional hard QCD radiation present in these processes.
The status and accuracy of the precision Monte Carlo generators used for luminosity measurements at flavour factories is reviewed. It is shown that, thanks to a considerable, long-term effort in tuned comparisons between the predictions of independent programs, as well as in the validation of the generators against the presently available calculations of the next-to-next-to-leading order QED corrections to Bhabha scattering, the theoretical accuracy reached by the most precise tools is of about one per mille. This error estimate is valid for realistic experimental cuts, appears to be quite rob…
We describe a procedure to tune the charged hadron multiplicities for deep inelastic events produced by the NEUT neutrino interaction generator. This tuning uses a model based on Koba-Nielsen-Olesen scaling, whose parameters are obtained by fitting multiplicity data from deuterium bubble chamber experiments. After tuning, the multiplicities of the events generated by NEUT are found to be in good agreement with the measurements from the bubble chamber experiments.
