We investigate the evolution of dust formed in Population III supernovae (SNe) by considering its transport and processing by sputtering within the SN remnants (SNRs). We find that the fates of dust grains within SNRs heavily depend on their initial radii $a_{\rm ini}$. For Type II SNRs expanding into the ambient medium with density of $n_{\rm H,0} = 1$ cm$^{-3}$, grains of $a_{\rm ini} < 0.05$ $μ$m are detained in the shocked hot gas and are completely destroyed, while grains of $a_{\rm ini} > 0.2$ $μ$m are injected into the surrounding medium without being destroyed significantly. Grains with $a_{\rm ini}$ = 0.05-0.2 $μ$m are finally trapped in the dense shell behind the forward shock. We show that the grains piled up in the dense shell enrich the gas up to 10$^{-6}-10^{-4}$ $Z_\odot$, high enough to form low-mass stars with 0.1-1 $M_\odot$. In addition, [Fe/H] in the dense shell ranges from -6 to -4.5, which is in good agreement with the ultra-metal-poor stars with [Fe/H] < -4. We suggest that newly formed dust in a Population III SN can have great impacts on the stellar mass and elemental composition of Population II.5 stars formed in the shell of the SNR.
Spectroscopic observations at 2.4 - 45 microns of the young supernova remnant Cas A with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) Short Wavelength Spectrometer (SWS) reveal strong emission lines of O, Ne, Si, S, and Ar. These lines are observed at high velocities (several thousand km/s), and are therefore associated with the supernova ejecta known as the fast-moving knots (FMKs). Continuum emission from dust is also seen in the Cas A spectrum. The continuum strength is spatially well correlated with the O and Ar line strengths, indicating that the dust emission also arises from the FMKs. The dust …
0103$-$72.6, the second brightest X-ray supernova remnant (SNR) in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), has been observed with the {\it Chandra X-Ray Observatory}. Our {\it Chandra} observation unambiguously resolves the X-ray emission into a nearly complete, remarkably circular shell surrounding bright clumpy emission in the center of the remnant. The observed X-ray spectrum for the central region is evidently dominated by emission from reverse shock-heated metal-rich ejecta. Elemental abundances in this ejecta material are particularly enhanced in oxygen and neon, while less prominent in the he…
We present the results of our ASCA SIS and GIS observations of the supernova remnant VRO42.05.01. Our spectral fits indicate that the SNR is isothermal (about 8.3 X 10^6 K), consistent with our ROSAT analysis results. The absorbing column density (about 2.9 X 10^21 cm^-2) obtained from these spectral fits is much smaller than expected for the nominal distance of 5 kpc, indicating that the line of sight toward VRO42.05.01 has an unusually low gas density. The spectral resolution of ASCA allows us to determine elemental abundances for the hot X-ray emitting plasma in the bright ``wing'' componen…
We present a catalogue of 18 new Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) uncovered in the optical regime as filamentary emissions and extended nebulosities on images of the Anglo Australian Observatory/United Kingdom Schmidt Telescope (AAO/UKST) HAlpha survey of the southern Galactic plane. Our follow-up spectral observations confirmed classical optical SNR emission lines for these 18 structures via detection of very strong [SII] at 6717 and 6731A relative to HAlpha ([SII]/HAlpha> 0.5). Morphologically, 10 of these remnants have coherent, extended arc or shell structures, while the remaining object…
The 10^51 ergs released in a supernova have far reaching consequences in the galaxy, determining elemental abundances, accelerating cosmic rays, and affecting the makeup of the interstellar medium. Recently the spectra of several supernova remnants have been found to be dominated by nonthermal emission. Separating the thermal and nonthermal components is important not only for the understanding of cosmic-ray acceleration and shock microphysics properties but for accurate assessment of the temperatures and line strengths. New models designed to model spatially resolved synchrotron X-rays from t…
We present an X-ray study of three mixed-morphology supernova remnants (SNRs), HB 21, CTB 1 and HB 3, using archival ASCA and ROSAT data. These data are complemented by archival Chandra X-ray Observatory data for CTB 1 and XMM-Newton X-ray Observatory data for HB 3. The spectra from HB 21 and HB 3 are well-described with a single-temperature thermal plasma in ionization equilibrium, while a two-temperature thermal plasma is found in CTB 1. We found enhanced abundances in all three SNRs. The elemental abundance of Mg is clearly enhanced in CTB 1, while HB 21 has enhanced abundances of Si and S.…
We present mid-infrared spectral mapping observations of the core-collapse supernova remnant 1E 0102.2-7219 in the Small Magellanic Cloud using the InfraRed Spectrograph (IRS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope. The remnant shows emission from fine structure transitions of neon and oxygen as well as continuum emission from dust. Comparison of the mid-IR dust emission with observations at x-ray, radio and optical wavelengths shows that the dust is associated with the supernova ejecta and is thus newly formed in the remnant. The spectrum of the newly formed dust is well reproduced by a model that in…
We report the discovery of a partial ~2deg. diameter non-thermal radio shell coincident with Taz, the pulsar wind nebula (PWN) in the error box of the apparently variable gamma-ray source 3EG J1809-2328. We propose that this radio shell is a newly identified supernova remnant (SNR G7.5-1.7) associated with the PWN. The SNR surrounds an amorphous region of thermal X-rays detected in archival ROSAT and ASCA observations putting this system in the mixed-morphology class of supernova remnants. G7.5-1.7 is the fifth such supernova remnant coincident with a bright GeV source, and the fourth containi…
We present the global distribution of fine structure infrared line emission in the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant using data from the Spitzer Space Telescope's Infrared Spectrograph. We identify emission from ejecta materials in the interior, prior to their encounter with the reverse shock, as well as from the post-shock bright ring. The global electron density increases by >~100 at the shock to ~10^4 cm^-3, providing evidence for strong radiative cooling. There is also a dramatic change in ionization state at the shock, with the fading of emission from low ionization interior species like [Si…
We have carried out a sensitive search for young pulsars associated with supernova remnants using the 76-m Lovell radio telescope at Jodrell Bank. The observations were made at 606 MHz using a system with a bandwidth of 8 MHz and a set noise temperature on cold sky of about 50 K. The survey targeted 33 remnants in the northern hemisphere and achieved a nominal sensitivity of ~1 mJy in most cases. Two pulsars were discovered in the course of this survey and the known pulsar PSR B1952+29 was detected. The new pulsars, J0215+6218 and J1957+2831, were found during searches of the supernova remnant…
The recently-discovered, nearby young supernova remnant in the southeast corner of the older Vela supernova remnant may have been seen in measurements of nitrate abundances in Antarctic ice cores. Such an interpretation of this twenty-year-old ice-core data would provide a more accurate dating of this supernova than is possible purely using astrophysical techniques. It permits an inference of the supernova4s ${}^{44}$Ti yield purely on an observational basis, without reference to supernova modelling. The resulting estimates of the supernova distance and light-arrival time are 200 pc and 700 ye…
We present a spatially resolved spectroscopic analysis of the young Galactic supernova remnant Kes 75 (SNR G29.7-0.3) using the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Kes 75 is one of an increasing number of examples of a shell-type remnant with a central pulsar powering an extended radio/X-ray core. We are able to pinpoint the location of the recently discovered pulsar, PSR J1846-0258, and confirm that X-rays from the remnant's core component are consistent with non-thermal power-law emission from both the pulsar and its surrounding wind nebula. We find that the spectrum of the pulsar is significantly ha…
We report on the morphological and spectral evolution of SNR 1987A from the monitoring observations with the Chandra/ACIS. As of 2005, the X-ray-bright lobes are continuously brightening and expanding all around the ring. The softening of the overall X-ray spectrum also continues. The X-ray lightcurve is particularly remarkable: i.e., the recent soft X-ray flux increase rate is significantly deviating from the model which successfully fits the earlier data, indicating even faster flux increase rate since early 2004 (day ~6200). We also report results from high resolution spectral analysis with…
We report a serendipitous discovery of broad absorption lines that were newly formed in the spectrum of the high-redshift, luminous radio-loud quasar TEX 1726 + 344, in a time interval of only 12 years. This is the first quasar showing a transition from narrow absorption lines to broad absorption lines. It also becomes one of the few radio-loud broad absorption line quasars. The gas cloud responsible for these broad absorption lines is derived to have parameters coinciding with those of the remnant of a tidally disrupted star.
We present the analysis of new X-ray observations of two Galactic radio supernova remnants (SNRs), G337.2-0.7 and G309.2-0.6. Both remnants exhibit line-rich thermal spectra that require highly non-solar elemental abundance ratios. In each case, Si and S are unequivocally overabundant compared to solar based purely on the measured equivalent width of the K$α$ line complex. Detailed nonequilibrium ionization spectral analysis of these remnants, using a single temperature, single ionization age model, confirm the overabundances, yielding Si, S and Ar abundances many times their solar values: 3 t…
We present models for the evolution of the elemental abundances in the gas and dust phases of the interstellar medium (ISM) of our Galaxy by generalizing standard models for its dynamical and chemical evolution. In these models, the stellar birthrate history is determined by the infall rate of primordial gas, and by its functional dependence on the mass surface density of the stars and gas. We adopt a two component model for the Galaxy, consisting of a central bulge and an exponential disk with different infall rates and stellar birthrate histories. Condensation in stellar winds, Type Ia and T…
We report on the X-ray emission from the shell-like, non-thermal radio source Sgr A East located in the inner few parsecs of the Galaxy based on observations made with the ACIS detector on board Chandra. This is the first time Sgr A East has been clearly resolved from other complex structures in the region. The X-ray emitting region is concentrated within the central $\simeq 2$ pc of the larger radio shell. The spectrum shows strong K$α$ lines from highly ionized ions of S, Ar, Ca, and Fe. A simple isothermal plasma model gives electron temperature $\sim 2$ keV, absorption column $\sim 1 \time…
As with other mixed morphology remnants, W44's projected center is bright in thermal X-rays. It has an obvious radio shell, but no discernable X-ray shell. X-ray bright knots dot W44's image. The Chandra data show that the remnant's hot, bright projected center is metal-rich and that the bright knots are regions of comparatively elevated elemental abundances. The neon abundance is elevated, suggesting that the center is rich in ejecta. Furthermore, some of the emitting iron atoms appear to be underionized with respect to the other ions, providing the first X-ray evidence for dust destruction i…
Quasar (or QSO) elemental abundances provide unique probes of high-redshift star formation and galaxy evolution. There is growing evidence from both the emission and intrinsic absorption lines that QSO environments have roughly solar or higher metallicities out to redshifts >4. The range is not well known, but solar to a few times solar appears to be typical. There is also evidence for higher metallicities in more luminous objects, and for generally enhanced N/C and Fe/alpha abundances compared to solar ratios. These results identify QSOs with vigorous, high-redshift star formation -- consiste…
The X-ray emission from the young supernova remnant (SNR) N103B is measured and analysed using the high-resolution cameras and spectrometers on board XMMM and CHANDRA. The spectrum from the entire remnant is reproduced very well with three plasma components of kT=0.55, 0.65, and 3.5 keV, corresponding roughly to line emission by the O-K, Fe-L, and Fe-K species, respectively. Narrow band images reveal different morphologies for each component. The kT=0.65keV component, which dominates the emission measure (4.5E65m^{-3}), is in ionisation equilibrium. This provides a lower limit of 3000 yrs to t…
The middle-aged supernova remnant (SNR) N49B in the Large Magellanic Cloud has been observed with the {\it Chandra X-Ray Observatory}. The superb angular resolution of {\it Chandra} resolves the complex structure of X-ray emitting filaments across the SNR. All observed features are soft ($E <$ 3 keV) and we find no evidence for either point-like or extended hard emission within the SNR. Spectral lines from O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, and Fe are present. Equivalent width images for the detected elemental species and spatially-resolved spectral analysis reveal the presence of Mg-rich ejecta within the SNR…
We have compiled a sample of globular clusters with high quality stellar abundances from the literature to compare to the chemistries of stars in the Galaxy and those in dwarf spheroidal galaxies. Of the 45 globular clusters examined, 29 also have kinematic information. Most of the globular clusters belong to the Galactic halo, however a signficant number have disk kinematics or belong to the bulge. Focusing on the [alpha/Fe] and light r-process element ratios, we find that most globular cluster stars mimic those of the field stars of similar metallicities, and neither clearly resembles the pr…
We present the results of a joint spectral analysis of RXTE PCA, ASCA SIS, and ROSAT PSPC data of the supernova remnant SN 1006. This work represents the first attempt to model both the thermal and nonthermal X-ray emission over the entire X-ray energy band from 0.12 to 17 keV. The thermal flux is described by a nonequilibrium ionization model with an electron temperature kT = 0.6 keV, an ionization timescale n0t = 9 x 10^9 s / cm^3, and a relative elemental abundance of silicon that is 10-18 times larger than the solar abundance. The nonthermal X-ray spectrum is described by a broken power la…
We present results from the observation of the young Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) G292.0+1.8 with the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) on board the {\it Chandra X-ray Observatory}. In the 0.3 $-$ 8 keV band, the high resolution ACIS images reveal a complex morphology consisting of knots and filaments, as well as the blast wave around the periphery of the SNR. We present equivalent width (EW) maps for the elemental species O, Ne, Mg, and Si, which allow us to identify regions of enhanced metallicity in the SNR. G292.0+1.8 is bright in O, Ne, and Si; weaker in S and Ar; with little F…
We have observed the young Galactic supernova remnant Kes 75 with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. This object is one of an increasing number of examples of a shell-type remnant with a central extended radio core harboring a pulsar. Here we present a preliminary spatially resolved spectroscopic analysis of the Kes~75 system. We find that the spectrum of the pulsar is significantly harder than that of the wind nebula, and both of these components can be isolated from the diffuse thermal emission that seems to follow the same distribution as the extended radio shell. When we characterize the therm…
The extended supernova remnant G 116.5+1.1 was observed in the optical emission lines of Halpha+[N II], [S II] and [O III]; deep long-slit spectra were also obtained. The morphology of the remnant's observed emission is mainly diffuse and patchy in contrast to the known filamentary emission seen along the western limb. The bulk of the detected emission in the region appears unrelated to the remnant but there is one area of emission in the south-east which is characterized by a [S II]/Halpha ratio of ~0.5, implying a possible relation to G 116.5+1.1. If this is actually the case, it would imply…
PSR J1119-6127 is a recently discovered 1700-year-old radio pulsar that has a very high inferred surface dipolar magnetic field. We present a detailed analysis of a pointed ASCA observation and archival ROSAT data of J1119-6127 and its surroundings. Both data sets reveal extended emission coincident with the newly-discovered radio supernova remnant G292.2-0.5, reported in a companion paper by Crawford et al. (astro-ph/0012287).. A hard point source, offset ~1.5' from the position of the radio pulsar, is seen with the ASCA GIS. No pulsations are detected at the radio period with a pulsed fracti…
The star formation history of the globular cluster Omega Centauri is investigated in the context of an inhomogeneous chemical evolution model in which supernovae induce star formation. The proposed model explains recent observations for Omega Cen stars, and divides star formation into three epochs. At the end of the first epoch, ~ 70% of the gas was expelled by supernovae. AGB stars then supplied s-process elements to the remaining gas during the first interval of ~300 Myr. This explains the observed sudden increase in Ba/Fe ratios in Omega Cen stars at [Fe/H] ~ -1.6. Supernovae at the end of …
The long-term evolution of supernova remnants (SNRs) in the primordial interstellar medium (ISM) with an inhomogeneous structure is calculated to investigate metal enrichment of the primordial gas. For this purpose, we have constructed a parallel 3-D hydrodynamics code incorporating the radiative cooling and self-gravity. The self-gravity and radiative cooling develop the inhomogeneous structure of the ISM from a small perturbation with a power-law spectrum. The resultant density ranges from 0.5 cm$^{-3}$ to 10$^6$ cm $^{-3}$. Calculations for a supernova (SN) with the progenitor mass of 20 so…
We present follow-up observations of the serendipitously discovered 7-s X-ray pulsar AX J1845-0258, which displays characteristics similar to those observed in the anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs). We find a dramatic reduction in its 3-10 keV flux in both new ASCA and RXTE datasets. Within the pulsar's position-error locus, we detect a faint point source, AX J184453-025640, surrounded by an arc of diffuse X-ray emission. This arc is coincident with the South-East quadrant of the radio shell of the newly discovered supernova remnant G29.6+0.1, reported in our companion paper (Gaensler et al. 1999…
Archival VLA data has been used to produce arcsecond-resolution 6- and 20-cm images of the region surrounding the nuclear 200-pc (~15") starburst in NGC 253. Twenty-two discrete sources stronger than 0.4 mJy have been detected within ~2 kpc (~3') of the galaxy nucleus; almost all these sources must be associated with the galaxy. None of the radio sources coincides with a detected X-ray binary, so they appear to be due to supernova remnants and H II regions. The region outside the central starburst has a derived radio supernova rate of <~0.1/yr, and may account for at least 20% of the recent st…
The X-ray structure of Kepler's supernova remnant shows a rounded shape delineated by forward shocks. We measure proper motions of the forward shocks on overall rims of the remnant, by using archival Chandra data taken in two epochs with time difference of 6.09 yr. The proper motions of the forward shocks on the northern rim are measured to be from 0.076" (+/-0.032"+/-0.016") to 0.110" (+/-0.014"+/-0.016") per yr, while those on the rest of the rims are measured to be from 0.150" (+/-0.017"+/-0.016") to 0.300" (+/-0.048"+/-0.016") per yr, here the first-term errors are statistical uncertaintie…
Molecular clouds interacting with supernova remnants may be subject to a greatly enhanced irradiation by cosmic rays produced at the shocked interface between the ejecta and the molecular gas. Over the past decade, broad-band observations have provided important clues about these relativistic particles and indicate that they may dominate over the locally observed cosmic-ray population by a significant amount. In this paper, we estimate the enhancement and find that the cosmic ray energy density can be up to $\sim$1000 times larger in the molecular cloud than in the field. This enhancement can …
The remnant of a neutron star binary coalescence is expected to be temporarily stabilised against gravitational collapse by its differential rotation. We explore the possibility of dynamo activity in this remnant and assess the potential for powering a short-duration gamma-ray burst (GRB). We analyse our three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of neutron star mergers with respect to the flow pattern inside the remnant. If the central, newly formed super-massive neutron star remains stable for a good fraction of a second an efficient low-Rossby number $α-Ω$-dynamo will amplify the initial se…
We made a 100 ks observation of the Sagittarius (Sgr) B1 region at (l, b) = (0.5, -0.1) near to the Galactic center (GC) with the Suzaku/XIS. Emission lines of S XV, Fe I, Fe XXV, and Fe XXVI were clearly detected in the spectrum. We found that the Fe XXV and Fe XXVI line emissions smoothly distribute over the Sgr B1 and B2 regions connecting from the GC. This result suggests that the GC hot plasma extends at least up to the Sgr B region with a constant temperature. There are two diffuse X-ray sources in the observed region. One of the two (G0.42-0.04) is newly discovered, and exhibits a stron…
The remnant of SN 1006 has an X-ray spectrum dominated by nonthermal emission, and pre-ASCA observations were well described by a synchrotron calculation with electron energies limited by escape. We describe the results of a much more stringent test: fitting spatially integrated ASCA GIS (0.6-8 keV) and RXTE PCA (3-10 keV) data with a combination of the synchrotron model SRESC newly ported to XSPEC and a new thermal shock model VPSHOCK. The new model can describe the continuum emission above 2 keV well, in both spatial distribution and spectrum. We find that the emission is dominantly nontherm…
The supernova remnant (SNR) complex CTB 37 is an interesting candidate for observations with Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray telescopes such as H.E.S.S. In this region, three SNRs are seen. One of them is potentially associated with several molecular clouds, a circumstance that can be used to probe the acceleration of hadronic cosmic rays. This region was observed with the H.E.S.S. Cherenkov telescopes and the data were analyzed with standard H.E.S.S. procedures. Recent X-ray observations with Chandra and XMM-Newton were used to search for X-ray counterparts. The discovery of a new VHE gamma-…
The newly discovered supernova remnant G266.2-1.2 (RX J0852.0--0462), along the line of sight to the Vela SNR, was observed with ASCA for 120 ks. We find that the X-ray spectrum is featureless, and well described by a power law, extending to three the class of shell-type SNRs dominated by nonthermal X-ray emission. Like G347.3-0.5, this low-latitude remnant displays discrete regions of enhanced emission along the rim as well as faint nonthermal emission from the interior. We derive limits on the thermal content of the remnant emission, although the presence of the Vela SNR compromises our abil…
I present the data of the shell of classical Nova Persei (1901) obtained by the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer S3 detector on-board \cha Observatory. The X-ray nebula is affected mostly by the complex interstellar medium around the nova and has not developed a regular shell with bulk of emission coming from the southwestern quadrant. The part of the bright zone that is co-spatial with the brightest non-thermal radio emission region, is found to be a source of non-thermal X-ray emission with a power law photon index of 2.3$^{+1.5}_{-0.9}$ and alpha=0.68^${+0.03}_{-0.15}$ at about a flux of 1…
The unique elemental abundance pattern of the carbon-rich stars CS29498-043 and CS22949-037 is characterized by a large excess of magnesium and silicon in comparison with iron. This excess is investigated in the context of a supernova-induced star formation scenario, and it is concluded that these stars were born from the matter swept up by supernova remnants containing little iron and that such supernovae are similar to the least-luminous SNe ever observed, SNe 1997D and 1999br. Comparison of the observed abundance pattern in iron-group elements of subluminous supernovae with those of other s…
We show that (1) the newly discovered supernova remnant (SNR), GRO J0852--4642/RX J0852.0--4622, was created by a core-collapse supernova of a massive star, and (2) the same supernova event which produced the $^{44}$Ti detected by COMPTEL from this source is probably also responsible for a large fraction of the observed $^{26}$Al emission in the Vela region detected by the same instrument. The first conclusion is based on the fact that the remnant is currently expanding too slowly given its young age for it to be caused by a Type Ia supernova. If the current SNR shell expansion speed is greate…
We estimate gamma-ray fluxes due to the decay of nuclei beyond Bi209 from a supernova or a supernova remnant assuming that the r-process occurs in supernovae. We find that a detector with a sensitivity of about 10**(-7) photons/cm**2/s at energies of 40 keV to 3 MeV may detect fluxes due to the decay of Ra226, Th229, Am241, Am243, Cf249, and Cf251 in the newly discovered supernova remnant near Vela. In addition, such a detector may detect fluxes due to the decay of Ac227 and Ra228 produced in a future supernova at a distance of about 1 kpc. As nuclei with mass numbers A > 209 are produced sole…
