The optically induced oscillatory response of a spherical two-component, shell-core structured, nanoparticle by nodeless elastic vibrations of soft peripheral shell against hard and dynamically immobile inner core is considered. The eigenfrequencies of the even-parity, spheroidal and odd-parity torsional vibrational modes trapped in the finite-depth shell are obtained which are of practical interest for modal specification of individual resonances in spectra of resonant scattering of long wavelength electromagnetic waves by ultrafine particles.
The electromagnetic response of a nanoparticle of an ion-doped polymeric elastic insulator, commonly called as an electret, is considered in the continuum model of a uniformly charged elastic sphere. The spectral formulae for the frequency of optically induced spheroidal and torsional shear oscillations driven by bulk force of elastic and dielectric stresses are obtained in analytic form. Particular attention is given to relaxation dielectric mode of the electrostriction response and its stability in the lowest quadrupole mode. The practical usefulness of ultrafine particles of electrets as a …
Elastic sheets with macroscopic dimensions are easy to deform by bending and stretching. Yet shaping nanometric sheets by mechanical manipulation is hard. Here we show that nanoparticle self-assembly could be used to this end. We demonstrate by Monte Carlo simulation that spherical nanoparticles adhering to the outer surface of an elastic nanotube can self-assemble into linear structures as a result of curvature-mediated interactions. We find that nanoparticles arrange into rings or helices on stretchable nanotubes, and as axial strings on nanotubes with high rigidity to stretching. These self…
We study mutual alignment and interactions between colloidal particles of dissimilar shapes and dimensions when dispersed in a nematic host fluid. Convex pentagonal and concave starfruit-shaped nanoprisms and microspheres induce dipolar or quadrupolar director structures. The ensuing elastic pair interactions between microspheres and nanoprisms are highly dependent on the nanoparticle shape being omnidirectionally attractive for convex prisms but strongly anisotropic for concave prisms. Elastic deformations due to spherical particles cause well-defined alignment of complex-shaped nanoparticles…

Functionality of the novel nanocomposite polymers may be stipulated by size characteristics of nanoparticles and the polymer, different physical effects like charge transfer in such objects etc. We characterize and analyze structure, elastic, electric properties and of novel polymer nanocomposites, isotactic polypr…
Single-particle tracking and optical tweezers are powerful techniques for studying diverse processes at the microscopic scale. The stochastic behavior of a microscopically observable particle contains information about its interaction with surrounding molecules, and an optical tweezer can further facilitate this observation with its ability to constrain the particle to an area of interest. Although these techniques found their initial applications in biology, they can also shed new light on colloid and interface phenomena by unveiling nanoscale morphologies and molecular-level interactions in …
By introducing the divergence of a vector potential into the Lagrangian, a Lagrangian framework is developed to incorporate surface energy into elasticity. Besides the Euler-Lagrange equation and natural boundary condition, a new boundary constitutive equation is derived from the variation of the Lagrangian and configuration on which the Lagrangian is defined. On the boundary surface, explicit expression of the vector potential with respect to field variable and surface curvature is determined. Based on this framework, an elastic model with relevance to the surface energy is established. The Y…
We present a method to locally probe spatially varying chemical composition of soft matter systems by use of optically controlled and elastically self-assembled plasmonic nanoantennae. Disc-shaped metal particles with sharp irregular edges are optically trapped, manipulated, and assembled into small clusters to provide a strong enhancement of the Raman scattering signal coming from the sample regions around and in-between these particles. As the particles are reassembled and spatially translated by computer-controlled laser tweezers, we probe chemical composition as a function of spatial coord…
We provide a detailed study of the interplay between the different interactions which appear in the Brownian motion of a micronsized sphere immersed in a viscoelastic fluid measured with optical trapping interferometry. To explore a wide range of viscous, elastic and optical forces, we analyze two different viscoelastic solutions at various concentrations, which provide a dynamic polymeric structure surrounding the Brownian sphere. Our experiments show that, depending of the fluid, optical forces, even if small, slightly modify the complex modulus at low frequencies. Based on our findings, we …
Self-assembly of nanoparticles can enable composites with pre-designed properties but remains challenged by reproducing structural diversity of atomic and molecular crystals. We combine anisotropic elastic and weakly screened electrostatic interactions to guide both orientational and triclinic positional self-ordering of inorganic nanocrystals in a nematic fluid host. The lattice periodicity of these low-symmetry colloidal crystals is more than an order of magnitude larger than the nanoparticle size. Orientations of nanocrystals, as well as crystallographic axes of ensuing triclinic colloidal …
We study the influence of spherical, triangular, and rod-like nanoparticles on the mechanical properties of a polymer nanocomposite (PNC), via coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. We focus on how the nanoparticle size, loading, mass, and shape influence the PNC's elastic modulus, stress at failure and resistance against cavity formation and growth, under external stress. We find that in the regime of strong polymer-nanoparticle interactions, the formation of a polymer network via temporary polymer-nanoparticle crosslinks has a predominant role on the PNC reinforcement. Spherical nano…
We demonstrate scaffolding of plasmonic nanoparticles by topological defects induced by colloidal microspheres to match their surface boundary conditions with a uniform far-field alignment in a liquid crystal host. Displacing energetically costly liquid crystal regions of reduced order, anisotropic nanoparticles with concave or convex shapes not only stably localize in defects but also self-orient with respect to the microsphere surface. Using laser tweezers, we manipulate the ensuing nanoparticle-microsphere colloidal dimers, probing the strength of elastic binding and demonstrating self-asse…
We investigate the local elastic properties of polystyrene doped with SiO2 nanoparticles by analyzing the local density fluctuations. The density fluctuations were established from coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations performed with the MARTINI force field. A significant increase in polystyrene stiffness was revealed within a characteristic range of 1.4 nm from the nanoparticle, while polystyrene density saturates to the bulk value at significantly shorter distances. The enhancement of the local elastic properties of the polymer was attributed to the effect of non-affine deformations …
Studies of nanoparticle-based optical matter have only considered spherical constituents. Yet nanoparticles with other shapes are expected to have different local electromagnetic field distributions and therefore interactions with neighbors in optical matter arrays. Therefore, one would expect their dynamics to be different as well. We investigate directed-assembly of ordered arrays of plasmonic nanoplatelets in optical line traps demonstrating reconfigurability of the array by altering the phase gradient via holographic beam shaping. The weaker gradient forces on and resultant slower motion o…
Single-molecule surface enhanced Raman scattering (SM-SERS) is one of the vital applications of plasmonic nanoparticles. The SM-SERS sensitivity critically depends on plasmonic hot-spots created at the vicinity of such nanoparticles. In conventional fluid-phase SM-SERS experiments, plasmonic hot-spots are facilitated by chemical aggregation of nanoparticles. Such aggregation is usually irreversible, and hence, nanoparticles cannot be re-dispersed in the fluid for further use. Here, we show how to combine SM-SERS with plasmon-polariton assisted, reversible assembly of plasmonic nanoparticles at…
Designing reconfigurable materials based on deformable nanoparticles (NPs) hinges on an understanding of the energetically-favored shapes these NPs can adopt. Using simulations, we show that hollow, deformable patchy NPs tailored with surface charge patterns such as Janus patches, stripes, and polyhedrally-distributed patches differently adapt their shape in response to changes in patterns and ionic strength, transforming into capsules, hemispheres, variably-dimpled bowls, and polyhedra. The links between anisotropy in NP surface charge, shape, and the elastic energy density are discussed.
The method of formation of nanoparticle aggregates such as high-coverage spherical shells of microspheres or 3-D micro crystals grown in the geometry unaffected by a substrate is described. In the reported experiment, the evaporation of single levitated water droplet containing 200 nm diameter polystyrene spheres was studied. Successive stages of the drying process were discussed by analyzing the intensity of light elastically scattered by the evaporating droplet. The numerically simulated self-assembly coincides nicely with the observed morphologies resulting from transformation of a droplet …
A theoretical analysis of homeotropic alignment induced by nanoparticles (NPs) in a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) sample cell is presented. It is found that such alignment on the surface of a NP causes a change in the orientation of the molecular director near the surface, which in turn induces variations in the elastic constants and free energy. The induced NLC properties allow coupling between nearby NPs, mediated by the NLC molecules. The rotation of the coupled NPs close to the substrate tends to induce a long-range orientation of the NLC molecular director, leading to modification in the a…
