Infrared-Faint Radio Sources (IFRSs) are a class of source which are bright at radio frequencies, but do not appear in deep infrared images. We report the detection of 14 IFRSs within the Spitzer extragalactic First Look Survey field, eight of which are detected near to the limiting magnitude of a deep R-band image of the region, at R ~ 24.5. Sensitive Spitzer Space Telescope images are stacked in order to place upper limits on their mid-infrared flux densities, and using recent 610-MHz and 1.4-GHz observations we find that they have spectral indices which vary between alpha = 0.05 and 1.38, where we define alpha such that S = S_0 nu^(- alpha), and should not be thought of as a single source population. We place constraints on the luminosity and linear size of these sources, and through comparison with well-studied local objects in the 3CRR catalogue demonstrate that they can be modelled as being compact (< 20 kpc) Fanaroff-Riley Class II (FRII) radio galaxies located at high redshift (z > 4).
Early results from the 70-micron observations of the Spitzer Extragalactic First Look Survey are presented. As a whole, about 90% of the population show infrared colors that are consistent with the spectral energy distributions of the local IRAS population of luminous infrared starbursts, while approximately 10% of the sample show warm infrared colors consistent with AGN activity. The mean redshift for the population is z=0.2, and the mean total infrared luminosity is about L(ir)= 2x10^{11} L(sun).
The ESO-Spitzer extragalactic Imaging Survey (ESIS) is the optical follow up of the Spitzer Wide-Area InfraRed Extragalactic (SWIRE) survey in the ELAIS-S1 area. This paper presents B, V, R Wide Field Imager observations of the first 1.5 square degree of the ESIS survey. Data reduction is described including astrometric calibration, illumination and color corrections, completeness and photometric accuracy estimates. Number counts and color distributions are compared to literature observational and theoretical data, including non-evolutionary, PLE, evolutionary and semi-analytic Lambda-CDM gala…
The comparison between the new Spitzer data at 24 micron and the previous ISOCAM data at 15 micron is a key tool to understand galaxy properties and evolution in the infrared and to interpret the observed number counts, since the combination of Spitzer with the ISO cosmological surveys provides for the first time the direct view of the Universe in the Infrared up to z~2. We present the prediction in the Spitzer 24-micron band of a phenomenological model for galaxy evolution derived from the 15-micron data. Without any ``a posteriori'' update, the model predictions seem to agree well with the r…
Observations of the Spitzer extragalactic First Look Survey field taken at 610 MHz with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope are presented. Seven individual pointings were observed, covering an area of 4 square degrees with a resolution of 5.8'' x 4.7'', PA 60 deg. The r.m.s. noise at the centre of the pointings is between 27 and 30 microJy before correction for the GMRT primary beam. The techniques used for data reduction and production of a mosaicked image of the region are described, and the final mosaic, along with a catalogue of 3944 sources detected above 5 sigma, are presented. The surve…
We present the Spitzer MIPS 24 micron source counts in the Extragalactic First Look Survey main, verification and ELAIS-N1 fields. Spitzer's increased sensitivity and efficiency in large areal coverage over previous infrared telescopes, coupled with the enhanced sensitivity of the 24 micron band to sources at intermediate redshift, dramatically improve the quality and statistics of number counts in the mid-infrared. The First Look Survey observations cover areas of, respectively, 4.4, 0.26 and 0.015 sq.deg. and reach 3-sigma depths of 0.11, 0.08 and 0.03 mJy. The extragalactic counts derived f…
We have measured the contribution of submillimeter and mid-infrared sources to the extragalactic background radiation at 70 and 160um. Specifically, we have stacked flux in 70 and 160um Spitzer Space Telescope (Spitzer) observations of the Canada-UK Deep Sub-millimeter Survey 14h field at the positions of 850um sources detected by SCUBA and also 8 and 24um sources detected by Spitzer. We find that per source, the SCUBA galaxies are the strongest and the 8um sources the weakest contributors to the background flux at both 70 and 160um. Our estimate of the contribution of the SCUBA sources is hig…
We present Spitzer 70um and 160um observations of the Spitzer extragalactic First Look Survey (xFLS). The data reduction techniques and the methods for producing co-added mosaics and source catalogs are discussed. Currently, 26% of the 70um sample and 49% of the 160um-selected sources have redshifts. The majority of sources with redshifts are star-forming galaxies at z<0.5, while about 5% have infrared colors consistent with AGN. The observed infrared colors agree with the spectral energy distribution (SEDs) of local galaxies previously determined from IRAS and ISO data. The average 160um/70um…
We present Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) data and source catalogs from the Spitzer Space Telescope Extragalactic First Look Survey. The data were taken in four broad bands centered at nominal wavelengths of 3.6, 4.5, 5.8 and 8.0 microns. A set of mosaics and catalogs have been produced which are ~80% complete and ~99% reliable to their chosen flux density limits. The main field survey covers 3.8 deg^2, and has flux density limits of 20muJy, 25muJy, 100muJy and 100muJy at wavelengths of 3.6, 4.5, 5.8 and 8.0 microns, respectively. The deeper ``verification'' survey covers 0.25 deg^2 with limits o…
Using the SPITZER SPACE TELESCOPE and the VLA, we present the first DIRECT evidence that the well-known far-infrared/radio correlation is valid to cosmologically significant redshift. We also confirm, with improved statistics compared with previous surveys, a similar result for the Mid-IR/radio correlation. We explore the dependence of monochromatic q_{24} and q_{70} on z. The results were obtained by matching Spitzer sources at 24 and 70 microns with VLA 1.4 GHz micro-Jy radio sources obtained for the SPITZER FLS. Spectroscopic redshifts have been obtained for over 500 matched IR/radio source…
In this Letter, we present the initial characterization of extragalactic 24um sources in the Spitzer First Look Survey (FLS) by examining their counterparts at 8um and R-band. The color-color diagram of 24-to-8 vs. 24-to-0.7um is populated with 18,734 sources brighter than the 3sigma flux limit of 110uJy, over an area of 3.7sq.degrees. The 24-to-0.7um colors of these sources span almost 4 orders of magnitudes, while the 24-to-8um colors distribute at least over 2 orders of magnitudes. In addition to identifying ~30% of the total sample with infrared quiescent, mostly low redshift galaxies, we …
We present a comparison between the SCUBA Half Degree Extragalactic Survey (SHADES) at 450 and 850 microns in the Lockman Hole East with a deep Spitzer Space Telescope survey at 3.6-24 microns conducted in Guaranteed Time. Using stacking analyses we demonstrate a striking correspondence between the galaxies contributing the submm extragalactic background light, with those likely to dominate the backgrounds at Spitzer wavelengths. Using a combination BRIzK plus Spitzer photometric redshifts, we show that at least a third of the Spitzer-identified submm galaxies at 1<z<1.5 appear to reside in ov…
(abridged) The ESIS survey is the optical follow up of the SWIRE/Spitzer in the ELAIS-S1 region of the sky. In the era of observational cosmology, the main efforts are focused on the study of galaxy evolution and its environmental dependence. Wide area, multiwavelength, extragalactic surveys are needed in order to probe sufficiently large volumes, minimize cosmic variance and find significant numbers of rare objects. We present VIMOS I and z band imaging belonging to the ESIS survey. A total of ~4 deg2 were targeted in I and ~1 deg2 in z. More than 300000 galaxies have been detected in the I b…
We investigate the clustering of galaxies selected in the 3.6 micron band of the Spitzer Wide-area Infrared Extragalactic (SWIRE) legacy survey. The angular two-point correlation function is calculated for eleven samples with flux limits of S_3.6 > 4-400 mujy, over an 8 square degree field. The angular clustering strength is measured at >5-sigma significance at all flux limits, with amplitudes of A=(0.49-29)\times10^{-3} at one degree, for a power-law model, Aθ^{-0.8}. We estimate the redshift distributions of the samples using phenomological models, simulations and photometric redshifts, and …
We investigate the properties of 1088 Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z~3 selected from a ~2.63$ deg2 sub-region of the First Look Survey field using the ground-based multi-color data and the Spitzer Space Telescope mid-infrared data at 3--8 and 24 um. With the wide area and the broad wavelength coverage, we sample a large number of ``rare'' u-band dropouts which are massive (M* > 10^11 Msun), allowing us to perform a statistical analysis of these subsets of LBGs that have not been studied in detail. Optically bright (R(AB) < 24.5 mag) LBGs detected in mid-infrared (S_{3.6um} > 6 uJy) reside at…
We describe data reduction and analysis of fluctuations in the Cosmic Far-IR Background (CFIB) in large maps observed with the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) instrument 160 micron detectors. We analyzed the extragalactic First Look Survey (FLS) and the Spitzer Wide-area Infrared Extragalactic Survey (SWIRE) Lockman Hole observations, the latter being the largest low-cirrus mapping observation available. In the Lockman Hole map, we measured the power spectrum of the CFIB by fitting a power law to the IR cirrus component, the dominant foreground contaminant, and subtracting this…
We exploit deep combined observations with Spitzer and Chandra of the SWIRE survey in the ELAIS-N1 region, to investigate the nature of the faint X-ray and IR sources in common, to identify AGN/starburst diagnostics, and to study the sources of the X-ray and IR cosmic backgrounds. In the 17'x17' area of the Chandra ACIS-I image there are 3400 SWIRE near-IR sources with 4 sigma detections in at least 2 IRAC bands and 988 sources detected at 24micron with MIPS brighter than 0.1 mJy. Of these, 102 IRAC and 59 MIPS sources have Chandra counterparts, out of a total of 122 X-ray sources present in t…
Highlights of recent observations of extended jets in AGN are presented. Specifically, we discuss new spectral constraints enabled by Spitzer, studies of the highest-redshift (z~4) radio/X-ray quasar jets, and a new VLBA detection of superluminal motion in the M87 jet associated with a recent dramatic X-ray outburst. Expanding on the title, inverse Compton emission from extended radio lobes is considered and a testable prediction for the gamma-ray emission in one exemplary example is presented. Prospects for future studies with ALMA and low-frequency radio interferometers are briefly described…
The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of dust-enshrouded galaxies with powerful restframe far-infrared emission have been constrained by a range of ground-based and space-borne surveys. The IRAS catalog provides a reasonably complete picture of the dust emission from nearby galaxies (at redshifts of order 0.1) that are typically less luminous than about 10 to the 12 solar luminosities. However, at higher redshifts, the observational coverage from all existing far-IR and submillimeter surveys is much less complete. Here we investigate the SEDs of a new sample of high-redshift submillimeter-s…
We present ultra-deep Spitzer 70-micron observations of GOODS-North. For the first time, the turn-over in the 70-micron Euclidean-normalized differential source counts is observed. We derive source counts down to a flux density of 1.2mJy. From the measured source counts and fluctuation analysis, we estimate a power-law approximation of the faint 70-micron source counts of dN/dS proportional to S^{-1.6}, consistent with that observed for the faint 24-micron sources. An extrapolation of the 70-micron source counts to zero flux density implies a total extragalactic background light (EBL) of 7.4+/…
We made model fitting to the mid-to-far infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for different categories of galaxies in the main extragalactic field of the {\it Spitzer} First Look Survey with the aid of spectroscopic information from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We find that the mid-to-far infrared SEDs of HII galaxies, mixture type galaxies and LINERs can be well fitted by the one-parameter ($α$) dust model of Dale et al. plus the 13 Gyr dust-free elliptical galaxy model. The statistics of $α$ values indicates that all these galaxies tend to be quiescent, although the HII galaxies are…
Using the SCUBA instrument on the JCMT, we have made a submillimeter mosaic at 850um of a subarea of the Spitzer First Look Survey (FLS). Our image covers the central 151 square arcmin of the northern extragalactic Continuous Viewing Zone (CVZ) field of the FLS to a median 3sigma depth of 9.7 mJy. The image contains ten 850um sources detected at 3.5sigma or higher significance, of which five are detected at greater than or equal 4sigma. We make the catalog of these SCUBA-selected FLS sources available to the community. After correcting for incompleteness and flux bias, we find that the density…
We investigate the infrared / radio correlation using the technique of source stacking, in order to probe the average properties of radio sources that are too faint to be detected individually. We compare the two methods used in the literature to stack sources, and demonstrate that the creation of stacked images leads to a loss of information. We stack infrared sources in the Spitzer extragalactic First Look Survey (xFLS) field, and the three northern Spitzer Wide-area Infrared Extragalactic survey (SWIRE) fields, using radio surveys created at 610 MHz and 1.4 GHz, and find a variation in the …
We have conducted sensitive (1 sigma<30 uJy) 1.4 GHz radio observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array of a field largely coincident with infrared observations of the Spitzer Wide-Area Extragalactic Survey. The field is centred on the European Large Area ISO Survey S1 region and has a total area of 3.9 deg. We describe the observations and calibration, source extraction, and cross-matching to infrared sources. Two catalogues are presented; one of the radio components found in the image and one of radio sources with counterparts in the infrared and extracted from the literature. 136…
We present new determinations of the local sub-mm luminosity functions, solving the ``sub-mm Olbers' Paradox.'' We also present predictions of source counts and luminosity functions in current and future far-infrared to sub-mm surveys. Using the sub-mm colour temperature relations from the SCUBA Local Universe Galaxy Survey, and the discovery of excess 450 micron excess emission in these galaxies, we interpolate and extrapolate the IRAS detections to make predictions of the SEDs of all 15411 PSC-z galaxies from 50-1300 microns. Despite the long extrapolations we find excellent agreement with (…
We present predictions for the angular correlation function and redshift distribution for SHADES, the SCUBA HAlf-Degree Extragalactic Survey, which will yield a sample of around 300 sub-mm sources in the 850 micron waveband in two separate fields. Complete and unbiased photometric redshift information on these sub-mm sources will be derived by combining the SCUBA data with i) deep radio imaging already obtained with the VLA, ii) guaranteed-time Spitzer data at mid-infrared wavelengths, and iii) far-infrared maps to be produced by BLAST, the Balloon-borne Large-Aperture Sub-millimeter Telescope…
We present maps of 14.4 deg^2 of the Ophiuchus dark clouds observed by the Spitzer Space Telescope Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS). These high quality maps depict both numerous point sources as well as extended dust emission within the star-forming and non-star-forming portions of these clouds. Using PSF-fitting photometry, we detect 5779 sources at 24 um and 81 sources at 70 um at the 10 sigma level of significance. Three hundred twenty-three candidate young stellar objects (YSOs) were identified according to their positions on the MIPS/2MASS K versus K$-$[24] color-magnitude …
A strict lower limit flux for the extragalactic background light from ultraviolet to the far-infrared photon energies is presented. The spectral energy distribution is derived using an established EBL model based on galaxy formation. The model parameters are chosen to fit the lower limit data from number count observations in particular recent results by the SPITZER infrared space telescope. A lower limit EBL model is needed to calculate guaranteed absorption due to pair production in extragalactic gamma-ray sources as in TeV blazars.
(Abridged) We present R-band images covering more than 11 square degrees of sky obtained with the KPNO 4-m telescope in preparation for the Spitzer Space Telescope First Look Survey. The FLS was designed to characterize the mid-infrared sky at depths 2 orders of magnitude deeper than previous surveys. The extragalactic component is the first cosmological survey done with Spitzer. Two relatively large regions of the sky were observed: the main FLS extra galactic field (17h18m+59d30m) and ELAIS-N1 field (16h10m+54d30m). The overall quality of the images is high. The relative astrometric accuracy…
We explore the correlation between morphological types and mid-infrared (MIR) properties of an optically flux-limited sample of 154 galaxies from the Forth Data Release (DR4) of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), cross-correlated with Spitzer SWIRE (Spitzer Wide-Area InfraRed Extragalactic Survey) fields of ELAIS-N1, ELAIS-N2 and Lockman Hole. Aperture photometry is performed on the SDSS and Spitzer images to obtain optical and MIR properties. The morphological classifications are given based on both visual inspection and bulge-disk decomposition on SDSS g- and r-band images. The average bulge-t…
We present sub-millimeter statistical detections of galaxies discovered in the 5'x5' Spitzer Early Release Observations (to 4-15 microJy 5 sigma at 3.6-8 microns, 170 microJy at 24 microns) through a stacking analysis of our reanalysed SCUBA 8mJy survey maps, and a Spitzer identification of a new sub-millimeter point source in the 8mJy survey region. For sources detected at 5.8 or 8 microns (154 and 111 sources respectively), we detect positive skews in the sub-millimeter flux distributions at 99.2-99.8% confidence using Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests, at both 850 microns and 450 microns. We also ma…
The study of the Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) is crucial to understand many astrophysical problems (as the formation of first stars, the evolution of galaxies and the role of dust emission). At present, one of the most powerful ways to put constraints on EBL is represented by the study of the photon-photon absorption on gamma-ray spectra of TeV blazars. Adopting this method, we found that, if the only contribution to the optical and Near Infrared (NIR) background is given by galaxies, the spectrum of the blazar H1426+428 cannot be fitted. To reproduce the observational data of H1426+42…
We present the first mid-infrared spectra of SMP LMC 11 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. While this object resembles a planetary nebula in the optical, its infrared properties are more similar to an object in transition from the asymptotic giant branch to the planetary nebula phase. A warm dust continuum dominates the infrared spectrum. The peak emission corresponds to a mean dust temperature of 330 K. The spectrum shows overlapping molecular absorption bands from 12 to 17 um corresponding to acetylene and polyacetylenic chains and benzene. This is the first detection of C4H2, C6H2, C6H6 and oth…
Extragalactic sources from the IRAS Faint Source Catalog (FSC) which have the optically faintest magnitudes (E > 18) were selected by spatial coincidence with a source in the FIRST radio survey, and 28 of these sources have been observed with the Infrared Spectrograph on Spitzer (IRS). While an infrared source is always detected with the IRS at the FIRST position, only ~ 50% of the infrared sources are real FSC detections, as estimated from the number of sources for which the fv(25um) determined with the IRS is fainter than the sensitivity limit for the FSC. Sources have 0.12 < z < 1.0 and lum…
We present MAMBO 1.2mm observations of 40 extragalactic sources from the Spitzer First Look Survey that are bright in the mid-infrared (S_24um>1mJy) but optically obscured (log_10 (nu F_nu (24um))/(nu F_nu (0.7um))>1). We use these observations to search for cold dust emission, probing the similarity of their spectral energy distributions to star forming infrared galaxies or obscured AGN. The sample as a whole is well detected at mean S_1.2mm=0.74+-0.09mJy and S_1.2mm/S_24um=0.15+-0.03. Seven (three) of the sources are individually detected at >3sigma (>5sigma) levels. Mean millimeter fluxes a…
We investigate the redshift dependence of the contribution to the extragalactic far-infrared/sub-millimeter background from galaxies detected by the Spitzer Space Telescope at 8um and 24um. Using seven-band optical to mid-infrared photometry, we estimate photometric redshifts for the Spitzer sources which appear to be mostly L* galaxies at a median redshift of z=1.0. These sources, extracted from deep 8um and 24um mosaics of the CUDSS 14-hour field with 5sigma limits of 5.8uJy and 70uJy respectively, exhibit significant 850um and 450um emission as observed by SCUBA. At 850um, after removing >=…
We present optical spectroscopy of a sample of 77 luminous AGN and quasars selected on the basis of their mid-infrared colors. Our objects are selected from the Spitzer Extragalactic First Look Survey and SWIRE XMM-LSS fields, with a typical 24mu flux density of 5mJy. The median redshift is 0.6, with a range of ~0.05-4. Only 33% (25/77) of these objects are normal type-1 quasars, with no obscuration. 44% (34/77) are type-2 objects, with high-ionization, narrow emission lines, 14% (11/77) are dust-reddened type-1 quasars, showing broad lines but a dust-reddened or unusually weak quasar continuu…
We present Chandra and Spitzer data of the 186, extragalactic, hard 2-10 keV X-ray selected sources, which lie in the central part of the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS). For the vast majority of sources (99.5%) there is a spectroscopic or photometric redshift available. We classify 17 sources as X-ray obscured QSOs, according to strictly X-ray criteria, i.e. defined as having large hydrogen column densities (N_H>10^22 cgs) and luminosities (Lx>10^44 cgs). The surface density of X-ray obscured QSOs is ~210 sq. deg. We find 18 candidate Compton thick N_H>10^24 cgs sources, of which three have Q…
The background radiations in the optical and the infrared constitute a relevant cause of energy loss in the propagation of high energy particles through space. In particular, TeV observations with Cherenkov telescopes of extragalactic sources are influenced by the opacity effects due to the interaction of the very high-energy source photons with the background light. With the aim of assessing with the best possible detail these opacity terms, we have modelled the extragalactic optical and IR backgrounds using available information on cosmic sources in the universe from far-UV to sub-mm wavelen…
The Spitzer Space Telescope (formerly SIRTF) extragalactic First-Look Survey covered about 5 square degrees centered on J2000 17:18 +59:30 in order to characterize the infrared sky with high sensitivity. We used the 100-m Green Bank Telescope to image the 21cm Galactic HI emission over a 3x3 degree field covering this position with an effective angular resolution of 9.8 arcmin and a velocity resolution of 0.62 km/s. In the central square degree of the image the average column density is N(HI) = 2.5 x 10^{20} cm-2 with an rms fluctuation of 0.3 x 10^{20}. The Galactic HI in this region has a ve…
We present deep u*-, and g-band images taken with the MegaCam on the 3.6 m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) to support the extragalactic component of the Spitzer First Look Survey (hereafter, FLS). In this paper we outline the observations, present source catalogs and characterize the completeness, reliability, astrometric accuracy and number counts of this dataset. In the central 1 deg2 region of the FLS, we reach depths of g~26.5 mag, and u*~26.2 mag (AB magnitude, 5$σ$ detection over a 3" aperture) with ~4 hours of exposure time for each filter. For the entire FLS region (~5 deg2 cover…
Using the Florida Multi-object Imaging Near-IR grism Observational Spectrometer (FLAMINGOS), we have conducted the FLAMINGOS Extragalactic Survey (FLAMEX), a deep imaging survey covering 7.1 square degrees within the 18.6 sq. deg NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey (NDWFS) regions. FLAMEX is the first deep, wide-area near-infrared survey to image in both the J and Ks filters, and is larger than any previous NIR surveys of comparable depth. The intent of FLAMEX is to facilitate the study of galaxy and galaxy cluster evolution at 1<z<2 by providing rest-frame optical photometry for the massive galaxy po…
We have conducted low-frequency radio observations with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) of 40 new hard X-ray sources discovered by the INTEGRAL satellite. This survey was conducted in order, to study radio emissions from these sources, to provide precise position and to identify new microquasar candidates. From our observations we find that 24 of the X-ray sources have radio candidates within the INTEGRAL error circle. Based on the radio morphology, variability and information available from different wavelengths, we categorize them as seventeen Galactic sources (4 unresolved, 7 ext…
(Abridged) High-redshift ultra luminous infrared galaxies contribute the bulk of the cosmic IR background and are the best candidates for very massive galaxies in formation at z>1.5. We present Keck/LRIS optical spectroscopy of 35 z>1.4 luminous IR galaxies in the Spitzer Wide-area Infra-Red Extragalactic survey (SWIRE) northern fields (Lockman Hole, ELAIS-N1, ELAIS-N2). The primary targets belong to the ``IR-peak'' class of galaxies, having the 1.6 micron (restframe) stellar feature detected in the IRAC Spitzer channels. The spectral energy distributions of the main targets are thoroughly anal…
On July 28, 2006 the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences recorded the spectrum of a faint meteor. We confidently identify the lines of FeI and MgI, OI, NI and molecular-nitrogen N_2 bands. The entry velocity of the meteor body into the Earth's atmosphere estimated from radial velocity is equal to 300 km/s. The body was several tens of a millimeter in size, like chondrules in carbon chondrites. The radiant of the meteor trajectory coincides with the sky position of the apex of the motion of the Solar system toward the centroid of the Local G…
Cosmic infrared background fluctuations may contain measurable contribution from objects inaccessible to current telescopic studies, such as the first stars and other luminous objects in the first Gyr of the Universe's evolution. In an attempt to uncover this contribution we have analyzed the GOODS data obtained with the Spitzer IRAC instrument, which are deeper and cover larger scales than the Spitzer data we have previously analyzed. Here we report these new measurements of the cosmic infrared background (CIB) fluctuations remaining after removing cosmic sources to fainter levels than before…
We present an optical spectroscopic survey of 24 micron and 1.4 GHz sources, detected in the Spitzer Extragalactic First Look Survey (FLS), using the multi-fiber spectrograph, Hydra, on the WIYN telescope. We have obtained spectra for 772 sources, with flux densities above 0.15 mJy in the infrared, and 0.09 mJy in the radio. The redshifts measured in this survey are mostly in the range 0 < z < 0.4, with a distribution peaking at z = 0.2. Detailed spectral analysis of our sources reveals that the majority are emission-line star-forming galaxies, with star formation rates in the range 0.2-200 Ms…
We have undertaken a program to observe emission lines of SIV 10.5, NeII 12.8, NeIII 15.6, & SIII 18.7 um in a number of extragalactic HII regions with the Spitzer Space Telescope. We report our results for the nearly face-on spiral galaxy M83. The nebulae selected cover a wide range of galactocentric radii (R_G). The observations were made with the Infrared Spectrograph in the short wavelength, high dispersion configuration. The above set of 4 lines is observed cospatially, thus permitting a reliable comparison of the fluxes. From the measured fluxes, we determine the ionic abundance ratios i…
The Extended Groth Strip (EGS) is one of the premier fields for extragalactic deep surveys. Deep observations of the EGS with the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) on the Spitzer Space Telescope cover an area of 0.38 square degrees to a 50% completeness limit of 1.5 uJy at 3.6 um. The catalog comprises 57434 objects detected at 3.6 um, with 84%, 28%, and 24% also detected at 4.5, 5.8, and 8.0 um. Number counts are consistent with results from other Spitzer surveys. Color distributions show that the EGS IRAC sources comprise a mixture of populations: low-redshift star-forming galaxies, quiescent gal…
Selection of active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the infrared allows the discovery of AGN whose optical emission is extinguished by dust. In this paper, we use the Spitzer Space Telescope First Look Survey (FLS) to assess what fraction of AGN with mid-infrared luminosities comparable to quasars are missed in optical quasar surveys due to dust obscuration. We begin by using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) database to identify 54 quasars within the 4 deg^2 extragalactic FLS. These quasars occupy a distinct region in mid-infrared color space by virtue of their strong, red, continua. This has allo…
We present mid-infrared observations of AGN in the GOODS fields, performed with the Spitzer Space Telescope. These are the deepest infrared and X-ray fields to date and cover a total area of ~0.1 square degrees. AGN are selected on the basis of their hard (2-8 keV) X-ray emission. The median AGN infrared luminosity is at least 10 times larger than the median for normal galaxies with the same redshift distribution, suggesting that the infrared emission is dominated by the central nucleus. The X-ray to infrared luminosity ratios of GOODS AGN, most of which are at 0.5<z<1.5, are similar to the va…
We present the mid-infrared (MIR) spectra obtained with the Spitzer InfraRed Spectrograph (IRS) for a sample of 52 sources, selected as infrared luminous, z>1 candidates in the Extragalactic First Look Survey (XFLS). The sample selection criteria are f(24um) > 0.9mJy, nu fnu(24um)/nu fnu(8um) > 3.16 and nu fnu(24um)/nu fnu(0.7um) > 10. Of the 52 spectra, 47 (90%) produced measurable redshifts based solely on the mid-IR spectral features, with the majority (35/47=74%) at 1.5<z<3.2. Keck spectroscopy of a sub-sample (17/47) agrees with the mid-IR redshift measurements. The observed spectra fall …
Color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) are presented for the Spitzer SAGE (Surveying the Agents of a Galaxy's Evolution) survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). IRAC and MIPS 24 um epoch one data are presented. These data represent the deepest, widest mid-infrared CMDs of their kind ever produced in the LMC. Combined with the 2MASS survey, the diagrams are used to delineate the evolved stellar populations in the Large Magellanic Cloud as well as Galactic foreground and extragalactic background populations. Some 32000 evolved stars brighter than the tip of the red giant branch are identified. Of t…
Here we present Spitzer Space Telescope imaging of Cyg A with the Infrared Array Camera, resulting in the detection of the high-energy tails or cut-offs in the synchrotron spectra for all four hotspots of this archetype radio galaxy. When combined with the other data collected from the literature, our observations allow for detailed modeling of the broad-band emission for the brightest spots A and D. We confirm that the X-ray flux detected previously from these features is consistent with the synchrotron self-Compton radiation for the magnetic field intensity 170 muG in spot A, and 270 muG in …
We model the constraints set on the evolution of dusty starburst galaxies by the current deep extragalactic surveys performed in the far-infrared with $\it Spitzer$, and at radio wavelengths with the VLA. Our models fit the number counts in all the available spectral bands well, and also provide a reasonably close match to the redshift distribution of the $\it Spitzer$ detections. We find: 1.) dusty starburst galaxies with infrared burst phases triggered by galactic interactions at redshift $z \sim 1-2$ are good candidates to fit the $\it Spitzer$ results at $24μm$, $70 μm$ and $160 μm$, assum…
We investigate the instantaneous star formation rates (SFR) and extinction properties for a large (N=274), near-infrared (2.2 micron) + mid-infrared (24 micron) selected sample of normal to ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) [10^9<L_{IR}/L_{sun}<10^12.5] with <z>~0.8 in the Spitzer Extragalactic First Look Survey. We combine Spitzer MIPS 24-micron observations with high-resolution, optical Keck Deimos spectroscopy to derive optical emission-line and infrared star formation rates (SFR_{opt} & SFR_{IR}, respectively). Direct comparison of these SFR diagnostics reveals that our sample exhi…
We have observed the central 45' region of the Galaxy at 620 MHz band of the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) in radio continuum, and measured the polarisation properties of 64 small diameter background extragalactic sources seen through the -6 deg < l < 6 deg, -2 deg < b < 2 deg region with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and the Very Large Array (VLA). Our 620 MHz observations show that Sgr A* is located behind the HII region Sgr A West. Using the ATCA and the VLA observations, we measured the Faraday rotation measure (RM) of the polarised sources. The measured RMs are mos…
We construct rest-frame luminosity functions at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, 8 and 24 microns over the redshift range 0<z<2 for galaxies and 0<z<4 for optical QSOs, using optical and infrared data from the Spitzer Wide-area InfraRed Extragalactic survey. The 3.6 and 4.5 micron galaxy LFs show evidence for moderate positive luminosity evolution up to z~1.5, consistent with the passive ageing of evolved stellar populations. Their comoving luminosity density was found to evolve passively, gradually increasing out to z~0.5-1 but flattening, or even declining, at higher redshift. Conversely, the 24 micron galaxy…
Aims. We quantify the contributions of 24um galaxies to the Far-Infrared (FIR) Background at 70 and 160um. We provide new estimates of the Cosmic Infrared Background (CIB), and compare it with the Cosmic Optical Background (COB). Methods. Using Spitzer data at 24, 70 and 160um in three deep fields, we stacked more than 19000 MIPS 24um sources with S24>60uJy at 70 and 160um, and measured the resulting FIR flux densities. Results. This method allows a gain up to one order of magnitude in depth in the FIR. We find that the Mid-Infrared (MIR) 24um selected sources contribute to more than 70% of th…
We present observations of 3.86 sq. deg. of the Perseus molecular cloud complex with the Spitzer Space Telescope Infrared Array Camera (IRAC). The maps show strong extended emission arising from shocked H2 in outflows in the region and from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon features. More than 120,000 sources are extracted toward the cloud. Based on their IRAC colors and comparison to off-cloud and extragalactic fields, we identify 400 candidate young stellar objects. About two thirds of these are associated with the young clusters IC348 and NGC1333, while the last third is distributed over the …
