We present low temperature tunneling density-of-states measurements in Al films in high parallel magnetic fields. The thickness range of the films, t=6-9 nm, was chosen so that the orbital and Zeeman contributions to their parallel critical fields were comparable. In this quasi-spin paramagnetically limited configuration, the field produces a significant suppression of the gap, and at high fields the gapless state is reached. By comparing measured and calculated tunneling spectra we are able to extract the value of the antisymmetric Fermi-liquid parameter G^0 and thereby deduce the quasiparticle density dependence of the effective parameter G^0_{eff} across the gapless state.
Using a single coil mutual inductance technique, we measure the low temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth in superconducting NbN films prepared with similar critical temperatures around 16 K but with different microstructures. Only (100) epitaxial and weakly granular (100) textured films display the characteristic exponential dependence of conventional BCS s-wave superconductors. More granular (111) textured films exhibit a linear dependence, indicating a gapless state in spite of the s-wave gap. This result is quantitatively explained by a model of thermal phase fluctuation…
Superconducting films subject to an in-plane magnetic field exhibit a gapless superconducting phase. We explore the quasi-particle spectral properties of the gapless phase and comment on the transport properties. Of particular interest is the sensitivity of the quantum interference phenomena in this phase to the nature of the impurity scattering. We find that films subject to columnar defects exhibit a `Berry-Robnik' symmetry which changes the fundamental properties of the system. Furthermore, we explore the integrity of the gapped phase. As in the magnetic impurity system, we show that optima…
We study coherent quantum transport through a superconducting film connected to normal-metal electrodes. Simple expressions for the differential conductance and the local density of states are obtained in the clean limit and for transparent interfaces. Quasiparticle interference causes periodic vanishing of the Andreev reflection at the energies of geometrical resonances, subgap transport, and gapless superconductivity near the interfaces. Application of the results to spectroscopic measurements of the superconducting gap and the Fermi velocity is analyzed.
The current dependence of the excess conductivity is measured up to $\simeq 3 T_c$ for a Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CuO$_{6+δ}$ thin film, as a function of doping. It is found to be anomalously sensitive to the transport current and to behave as a universal function of $T/T_c$ in the whole doping range. We discuss these results in the perspective of a granular superconductor with a gapless-like behavior.
We study the low temperature tunneling density of states of thin wires where superconductivity is destroyed through quantum phase-slip proliferation. Although this regime is believed to behave as an insulator, we show that for a large temperature range this phase is characterized by a conductivity falling off at most linearly with temperature, and has a gapless excitation spectrum. This novel conducting phase results from electron-electron interaction induced pair breaking. Also, it may help clarify the low temperature metallic features found in films and wires whose bulk realization is superc…
The theory of superconductivity developed by Bardeen, Cooper and Schrieffer (BCS) explains the stabilization of electron pairs into a spin-singlet, even frequency, state by the formation of an energy gap within which the density of states is zero. At a superconductor interface with an inhomogeneous ferromagnet, a gapless odd frequency superconducting state is predicted, in which the Cooper pairs are in a spin-triplet state. Although indirect evidence for such a state has been obtained, the gap structure and pairing symmetry have not so far been determined. Here we report scanning tunnelling sp…
All non-interacting two-dimensional electronic systems are expected to exhibit an insulating ground state. This conspicuous absence of the metallic phase has been challenged only in the case of low-disorder, low density, semiconducting systems where strong interactions dominate the electronic state. Unexpectedly, over the last two decades, there have been multiple reports on the observation of a state with metallic characteristics on a variety of thin-film superconductors. To date, no theoretical explanation has been able to fully capture the existence of such a state for the large variety of …
We study two-dimensional noncentrosymmetric nodal superconductors under Zeeman field and clarify the field angle dependence of topological properties. It has been shown that the nodal excitation acquires an excitation gap due to the Zeeman field perpendicular to anti-symmetric spin-orbit coupling, and then gapful topological superconductivity is realized. We show that the system undergoes gapful-gapless transition against tilting of the field. The gapless phase remains to show a finite band gap and unusual Majorana edge states in between the bulk bands. The Majorana edge states naturally propa…
We report the growth, characterization and superconducting properties of a new amorphous superconductor, RexZr ( x ~ 6 ), in thin film form. Films were grown by pulsed laser deposition with the substrate kept at room temperature. Films with thickness larger than 40 nm showed a superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of 5.9 K. Superconducting properties were measured for films with varying thickness from 120 to 3 nm. The normal state resistance scales linearly with inverse of thickness. The transition temperature, critical field, coherence length, penetration depth and superconducting energ…
We study the superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) in $d$-wave superconducting ultrathin films. By means of the kernel polynomial method, the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations are solved for square lattices with up to $360\times 360$ unit cells self-consistently, making it possible to observe fully the nanoscale spatial fluctuations of the superconducting order parameters and discriminate accurately the localized quasiparticle states from the extended ones by the lattice-size scaling of the generalized inverse participation ratio. It is shown that Anderson localization can not entirely inhibi…
Recent angle-resolved photoemission experiments have observed a proximity-induced superconducting gap in the helical surface states of a thin film of the 3D topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$ grown on a superconducting NbSe$_2$ substrate. The superconducting coherence peaks in the electronic density of states are strongly suppressed when the topological insulator is doped with magnetic Mn impurities, which was interpreted as the complete destruction of helical superconductivity in the topological surface states. Motivated by these experiments, we explore a different possibility: gapless helica…
Superconductivity in granular films is controlled by the grain size and the inter-grain coupling. In a two-component granular system formed by a random mixture of a normal metal (N) and a superconductor (S), the superconducting nano-grains may become coupled through S-N weak links, thereby affecting the superconducting properties of the network. We report on the study of superconductivity in immiscible Nb-Cu nanocomposite films with varying compositions. The microstructure of the films revealed the presence of phase separated, closely spaced, nano-grains of Nb and Cu whose sizes changed margin…
Topological insulators are a new class of materials, that exhibit robust gapless surface states protected by time-reversal symmetry. The interplay between such symmetry-protected topological surface states and symmetry-broken states (e.g. superconductivity) provides a platform for exploring novel quantum phenomena and new functionalities, such as 1D chiral or helical gapless Majorana fermions, and Majorana zero modes which may find application in fault-tolerant quantum computation. Inducing superconductivity on topological surface states is a prerequisite for their experimental realization. He…
Many disordered superconducting films exhibit smeared tunneling spectra with evident in-gap states. We demonstrated that the tunneling density of states in ultrathin MoC films is gapless and can be described by the Dynes version of the BCS density of states with a strong broadening parameter Gamma accounting for the suppression of coherence peaks and increased in-gap states. The thinner the film, the lower the Tc and the superconducting energy gap Delta and the larger the Gamma. MoC films of 3 nm thickness deposited simultaneously on silicon and sapphire substrates reveal very similar scalar d…
In a Type II superconductor, the vortex core behaves like a normal metal. Consequently, the single-particle density of states in the vortex core of a conventional Type II superconductor remains either flat or (for very clean single crystals) exhibits a peak at zero bias due to the formation of Caroli-de Gennes-Matricon bound state inside the core. Here we report an unusual observation from scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements in a weakly pinned thin film of the conventional s-wave superconductor a-MoGe, namely, that a soft gap in the local density of states continues to exist even at t…
We present results of numerical simulations of the 2+1d Nambu - Jona-Lasinio model with a non-zero baryon chemical potential mu including the effects of a diquark source term. Diquark condensates, susceptibilities and masses are measured as functions of source strength j. The results suggest that diquark condensation does not take place in the high density phase mu>mu_c, but rather that the condensate scales non-analytically with j implying a line of critical points and long range phase coherence. Analogies are drawn with the low temperature phase of the 2d XY model. The spectrum of the spin-1…
A reentrant temperature dependence of the thermoresistivity $ρ_{\mathrm{xx}}(T)$ between an onset local superconducting ordering temperature $T_\mathrm{loc}^\mathrm{onset}$ and a global superconducting transition at $T=T_\mathrm{glo}^\mathrm{offset}$ has been reported in disordered conventional 3-dimensional (3D) superconductors. The disorder of these superconductors is a result of either an extrinsic granularity due to grain boundaries, or of an intrinsic granularity ascribable to the electronic disorder originating from impurity dopants. Here, the effects of Fe doping on the electronic prope…
Superconductivity is a rare example of a quantum system in which the wavefunction has a macroscopic quantum effect, due to the unique condensate of electron pairs. The amplitude of the wavefunction is directly related to the pair density, but both amplitude and phase enter the Josephson current : the coherent tunneling of pairs between superconductors. Very sensitive devices exploit the superconducting state, however properties of the {\it condensate} on the {\it local scale} are largely unknown, for instance, in unconventional high-T$_c$ cuprate, multiple gap, and gapless superconductors. The…
Topological superconductors are an intriguing and elusive quantum phase, characterized by topologically protected gapless surface/edge states residing in a bulk superconducting gap, which hosts Majorana fermions. Unfortunately, all currently known topological superconductors have a very low transition temperature, limiting experimental measurements of Majorana fermions. Here we discover the existence of a topological Dirac-nodal-line state in a well-known conventional high-temperature superconductor, MgB2. First-principles calculations show that the Dirac-nodal-line structure exhibits a unique…
