We present X-ray observations of the field containing Nova Puppis 1942 (CP Pup) and Nova Puppis 1991 (V351 Pup), done with ASCA in 1998, and with XMM-Newton in 2005. The X-ray and UV luminosity of CP Pup seem to have remained approximately constant since the last X-ray observations of the 1980'ies, while the optical luminosity has decreased. The X-ray properties of this nova are explained by a high mass white dwarf accreting at low rate, in agreement with the nova theory given the large amplitude and other characteristics of the 1942 outburst.
Assuming a distance of 1600 pc, the X-ray luminosity of CP Pup is L=2.2 x 10(33) erg/s in the 0.15-10 keV range covered with EPIC, compatible with a magnetic system. The RGS grating spectrum shows a few prominent emission lines, and it is fitted with a cooling flow with mass accretion rate mdot <= 1.6 x 10(-10) msol/year. We detected also the O VII complex at 21.6-21.8 A that does not arise in the cooling flow. Most likely this feature originates in a wind or in the nova shell. The RGS and EPIC spectra are fitted only with thermal models with a very high shock temperature, T>60 keV, indicating a white dwarf with M>1.1 M(sun). The X-ray flux is modulated with the spectroscopic period of 1.47 hours detected in the optical. Since CP Pup is not an eclipsing system, this is better understood if magnetic accretion occurs: we discuss this possibility and its implications in detail. V351 Pup (N Pup 1991) was detected with XMM-Newton, but not with ASCA. It is a faint, non-super-soft X-ray source with luminosity L(x) =~ 3 x 10(31) erg/s, a factor of 50 less than measured with ROSAT in 1993.
In this paper we report on a new study of the SNR Puppis A based on VLA observations at 1425 MHz; the improvement represents a factor of two in angular resolution and almost ten times in sensitivity compared to the best previous image of Puppis A. This new image is used to compare with re-processed 327 MHz data and ROSAT and Chandra images to investigate morphological and spectral characteristics.
Adopting a distance for RS Pup derived from a period-luminosity relation based on Cepheid parallaxes, it is shown that the phase-lag observations of the surrounding nebulosity by Kervella et al. are well fitted by a model of an equatorial disc at an angle of 8.1 $\pm$ 0.6 degrees to the plane of the sky. The astrophysical implications of this are briefly mentioned.
We present and discuss a hundred year history of activity of the hot component of RX Pup based on optical photometry and spectroscopy. The outburst evolution of RX Pup resembles that of other symbiotic novae whereas at quiescence the hot component shows activity (high and low activity states) resembling that of symbiotic recurrent novae T CrB and RS Oph.
In light of the recent suggestion that the nearby eclipsing binary star system V Puppis has a dark companion on a long orbit, we present the results of radio and X-ray observations of it. We find an upper limit on its radio flux of about 300 $μ$Jy and a detection of it in the X-rays with a luminosity of about 3$\times10^{31}$ erg/sec, a value much lower than what had been observed in some of the low angular resolution surveys of the past. These data are in good agreement with the idea that the X-ray emission from V Puppis comes from mass transfer between the two B stars in the system, but can …
JHK spectroscopic and photometric observations are reported for the enigmatic, nova-like, variable V445 Puppis which erupted at the end of 2000. The near-IR spectra are hydrogen-deficient and unusually rich in CI lines. The important CI lines are found to be positioned at 1.133, 1.166, 1.175, 1.189, 1.26 and 1.689 microns. Model calculations for the CI lines are done to make the identification of the lines secure. Photometric data, taken on January 2.90 UT, 2001 shortly after the outburst, show the formation of an optically thin dust shell around V445 Puppis. The temperature and upper limit fo…
This paper reports molecular observations towards the Bright Eastern Knot (BEK) in the SNR Puppis A, a feature where radio and X-ray studies suggest that the shock front is interacting with a dense molecular clump. We performed high-resolution millimetric observations towards the BEK of Puppis A using the SEST telescope in the 12CO J=1-0 and 2-1 lines (beams of 45" and 23" respectively). More extended, lower angular resolution 12CO J=1-0 observations taken from NANTEN archival data were also analyzed to obtain a complete picture. In the velocity range near 16 km/s, the Puppis A systemic veloci…
Nova Puppis 2000 (V445 Pup) has been proposed as the first example of a helium nova. Recent optical spectroscopy of V445 Pup at V=19.91 mag obtained with IMACS on the 6.5-m Magellan telescope, shows that the spectrum consists of HeI, [OI], [OII] and [OIII] emission lines and no hydrogen is present. The spectroscopy shows an expanding nova shell with blue- and redshifted velocity components around +/- 850 km/s and +/- 1600 km/s. Images taken with Magellan under very good seeing conditions (FWHM ~ 0.6") shows V445 Pup to be extended (full width at zero intensity ~ 1.9") and elongated (position a…
Using adaptive optics at the ESO 3.6m telescope, we obtained diffraction limited JHK-images of the region around the Herbig AeBe star NX Pup. We clearly resolved the close companion (sep. 0.128") to NX Pup -- originally discovered by HST -- and measured its JHK magnitudes. A third object at a separation of 7.0" from NX Pup was identified as a classical T Tauri star so that NX Pup may in fact form a hierarchical triple system. We discuss the evolutionary status of these stars and derive estimates for their spectral types, luminosities, masses and ages.
X-ray emission line profiles provide the most direct insight into the dynamics and spatial distribution of the hot, X-ray-emitting plasma above the surfaces of OB stars. The O supergiant zeta Puppis shows broad, blueshifted, and asymmetric line profiles, generally consistent with the wind-shock picture. We model the profiles of eight lines in the Chandra HETGS spectrum of this prototypical hot star. The fitted lines indicate that the plasma is distributed throughout the wind starting close to the photosphere, that there is significantly less attenuation of the X-rays by the overlying wind than…
The nearby Mira-like variable L2 Pup is shown to be undergoing an unprecedented dimming episode. The stability of the period rules out intrinsic changes to the star, leaving dust formation along the line of sight as the most likely explanation. Episodic dust obscuration events are fairly common in carbon stars but have not been seen in oxygen-rich stars. We also present a 10-micron spectrum, taken with the Japanese IRTS satellite, showing strong silicate emission which can be fitted with a detached, thin dust shell, containing silicates and corundum.
The 2000 outburst of V445 Puppis shows unique properties, such as absence of hydrogen, enrichment of helium and carbon, slow development of the light curve with a small amplitude that does not resemble any classical novae. This object has been suggested to be the first example of helium novae. We calculate theoretical light curves of helium novae and reproduce the observational light curve of V445 Pup. Modeling indicates a very massive white dwarf (WD), more massive than 1.3 Msun. The companion star is possibly either a helium star or a helium-rich main-sequence star. We estimate the ignition …
We present the first far-ultraviolet (FUV) observations of the magnetic cataclysmic variable VV Puppis, obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer satellite. In addition, we have obtained simultaneous ground-based optical photometric observations of VV Pup during part of the FUV observation. The shapes of the FUV and optical light curves are consistent with each other and with those of past observations at optical, extreme-ultraviolet, and X-ray wavelengths. Time-resolved FUV spectra during the portion of VV Pup's orbit when the accreting magnetic pole of the white dwarf can be s…
We fit the Doppler profiles of the He-like triplet complexes of \ion{O}{7} and \ion{N}{6} in the X-ray spectrum of the O star $ζ$ Puppis, using XMM-Newton RGS data collected over $\sim 400$ ks of exposure. We find that they cannot be well fit if the resonance and intercombination lines are constrained to have the same profile shape. However, a significantly better fit is achieved with a model incorporating the effects of resonance scattering, which causes the resonance line to become more symmetric than the intercombination line for a given characteristic continuum optical depth $τ_*$. We disc…
We present time-resolved optical spectroscopy and photometry of the nova-like cataclysmic variable V348 Puppis. The system displays the same spectroscopic behaviour as SW Sex stars, so we classify V348 Pup as a new member of the class. V348 Pup is the second SW Sex system (the first is V795 Herculis) which lies in the period gap. The spectra exhibit enhanced HeII 4686 emission, reminiscent of magnetic cataclysmic variables. The study of this emission line gives a primary velocity semi-amplitude of K1 ~= 100 km/s. We have also derived the system parameters, obtaining: M1 ~= 0.65 Msun, M2 ~= 0.2…
We report on the discovery of fast-moving X-ray--emitting ejecta knots in the Galactic Oxygen-rich supernova remnant Puppis A from XMM-Newton observations. We find an X-ray knotty feature positionally coincident with an O-rich fast-moving optical filament with blue-shifted line emission located in the northeast of Puppis A. We extract spectra from northern and southern regions of the feature. Applying a one-component non-equilibrium ionization model for the two spectra, we find high metal abundances relative to the solar values in both spectra. This fact clearly shows that the feature originat…
We have observed the HI distribution in an area 40' x 40' around the neutron star candidate RX J0822-4300, which is located in the supernova remnant Puppis A. The observations of the 21 cm line were obtained with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and were combined with single dish data from the Southern Galactic Plane Survey. The spatial resolution is 90", and the velocity resolution, 1 km/s . A sensitivity of ~ 0.7 K was achieved. The results revealed a double lobed feature of reduced emission at +16 km/s, centered on the central compact object (CCO), and aligned with an HI hole bl…
We present XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer observations of pairs of X-ray emission line profiles from the O star Zeta Pup that originate from the same He-like ion. The two profiles in each pair have different shapes and cannot both be consistently fit by models assuming the same wind parameters. We show that the differences in profile shape can be accounted for in a model including the effects of resonance scattering, which affects the resonance line in the pair but not the intercombination line. This implies that resonance scattering is also important in single resonance lines, whe…
Utilizing two Chandra High Resolution Camera (HRC-I) observations with an epoch separation of somewhat more than five years, we have measured the proper motion of the central compact object, RX J0822-4300, in the supernova remnant Puppis-A for the first time. The position of RX J0822-4300 is found to be different by 0.574 +/- 0.184 arcsec, implying a proper motion of 107.49 +/- 34.46 mas/yr with a position angle of 241 degree +/- 24 degree. For a distance of 2.2 kpc, this proper motion is equivalent to a recoil velocity of 1121.79 +/- 359.60 km/s. Both the magnitude and the direction of the pr…
We present phase-resolved low resolution $JHK$ and higher resolution $K$-band spectroscopy of the polar VV Pup. All observations were obtained when VV Pup was in a low accretion state having a K magnitude near 15. The low resolution observations reveal cyclotron emission in the $J$ band during some phases, consistent with an origin near the active 30.5 MG pole on the white dwarf. The secondary in VV Pup appears to be a normal M7V star and we find that the $H$ and $K$ band fluxes are entirely due to this star at all orbital phases during the low accretion state. We use our higher resolution Kec…
We analyse visual observations of the pulsations of the red giant variable L2 Pup. The data cover 77 years between 1927 and 2005, thus providing an extensive empirical base for characterizing properties of the oscillations. The power spectrum of the light curve shows a single mode resolved into multiple peaks under a narrow envelope. We argue that this results from stochastic excitation, as seen in solar oscillations. The random fluctuations in phase also support this idea. A comparison with X Cam, a true Mira star with the same pulsation period, and W Cyg, a true semiregular star, illustrates…
Based on observations with the X-ray observatories Chandra and XMM-Newton we present results from a detailed spectro-imaging and timing analysis of the central compact X-ray source RX J0822-4300 in the supernova remnant Puppis-A. The superior angular resolution of Chandra allows for the first time to pinpoint the point source nature of this object down to $0.59\pm0.01$ arcsec (FWHM) and to determine its position:{RA=$08^{\rm h}21^{\rm m}57.40^{\rm s}$, Dec=$-43^{\circ}00^{'}16.69^{''}$ (J2000)} with sub-arcsecond accuracy. Spectral fits based on Chandra and XMM-Newton data provide a tight cons…
We present the first high resolution X-ray spectrum of the bright O4Ief supergiant star Zeta Puppis, obtained with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer on-board XMM-Newton. The spectrum exhibits bright emission lines of hydrogen-like and helium-like ions of nitrogen, oxygen, neon, magnesium, and silicon, as well as neon-like ions of iron. The lines are all significantly resolved, with characteristic velocity widths of order 1000-1500 km s^{-1}. The nitrogen lines are especially strong, and indicate that the shocked gas in the wind is mixed with CNO-burned material, as has been previously inferr…
V445 Pup (2000) is a unique object identified as a helium nova. Color indexes during the outburst are consistent with those of free-free emission. We present a free-free emission dominated light curve model of V445 Pup on the basis of the optically thick wind theory. Our light curve fitting shows that (1) the white dwarf (WD) mass is very massive (M_WD \gtrsim 1.35 M_\sun), and (2) a half of the accreted matter remains on the WD, both of which suggest that the increasing WD mass. Therefore, V445 Pup is a strong candidate of Type Ia supernova progenitor. The estimated distance to V445 Pup is no…
We investigated the low state of the polar VV Pup by collecting high S/N time series spectra. We monitored VV Pup with VLT+FORS1 and analyzed the evolution of its spectroscopic features across two orbits. We report the first detection of photospheric Zeeman lines in VV Puppis. We argue that the photospheric field structure is inconsistent with the assumption that the accretion shocks are located close to the foot points of a closed field line in a dipolar field distribution. A more complex field structure and coupling process is implied making VV Puppis similar to other well studied AM Herculi…
We present time-resolved spectroscopy and photometry of the double-lined eclipsing cataclysmic variable V347 Pup (= LB 1800). There is evidence of irradiation on the inner hemisphere of the secondary star, which we correct for using a model to give a secondary star radial velocity of K_R = 198 \pm 5 km/s. The rotational velocity of the secondary star in V347 Pup is found to be v sin i = 131 \pm 5 km/s and the system inclination is i = 84.0 \pm 2.3 degrees. From these parameters we obtain masses of M_1 = 0.63 \pm 0.04 M_\odot for the white dwarf primary and M_2 = 0.52 \pm 0.06 M_\odot for the M…
We report the detection and localization of X-ray emitting ejecta in the middle-aged Galactic supernova remnant Puppis A using five observations with the Suzaku X-ray Imaging Spectrometer to survey the eastern and middle portions of the remnant. A roughly 3' by 5', double-peaked region in the north center is found to be highly enriched in Si and other elements relative to the rest of the remnant. The X-ray fitted abundances are otherwise well below the solar values. While the ejecta-enhanced regions show some variation of relative element abundances, there is little evidence for a very strong …
We present time series UV and optical (1150 -- 8000 A) spectrophotometry of the novalike (NL) cataclysmic variable V348 Pup through and after eclipse. Outside of eclipse, the spectrum is characterized by a blue continuum, strong line emission, and a broad dip from 2000 -- 3000 A. The continuum eclipse depth is roughly the same over the entire wavelength range covered and there are no signatures of the WD eclipse in the light curves. Model steady-state accretion disk spectra provide a poor fit to the shape of the UV-optical spectrum outside of eclipse. All of these properties are consistent wit…
There are several supernova remnants which contain unresolved X-ray sources close to their centers, presumably radio-quiet neutron stars. To prove that these objects are indeed neutron stars, to understand the origin of their X-ray radiation, and to explain why they are radio-quiet, one should know their periods and period derivatives. We searched for pulsations of the X-ray flux from the radio-quiet neutron star candidate RX J0822-4300 near the center of the Puppis A supernova remnant observed with the ROSAT PSPC and HRI. A standard timing analysis of the separate PSPC and HRI data sets does …
We present simultaneous optical and near-infrared high angular resolution observations of the close Herbig Ae/Be binary star NX Pup which is associated with cometary globule~1. The reconstructed images have a diffraction--limited resolution of 62 mas in V, 75 mas in R (speckle masking reconstruction), and 115 mas in H, 156 mas in K (adaptive optics + post--processing). Compared to previous results we were able to derive better estimates on spectral type and luminosity and hence put better constraints on the evolutionary status (mass & age) of NX Pup A and B: with NX Pup A of spectral type F0-F…
We present results obtained from near-infrared JHK spectroscopic observations of novae V2491 Cyg and V597 Pup in the early declining phases of their 2007 and 2008 outbursts respectively. In both objects, the spectra displayed emission lines of HI, OI, HeI and NI. In V597 Pup, the HeI lines were found to strengthen rapidly with time. Based on the observed spectral characteristics, both objects are classified as He/N novae. We have investigated the possibility of V2491 Cyg being a recurrent nova as has been suggested. By studying the temporal evolution of the line widths in V2491 Cyg it appears …
We study the eclipsing nova-like variable V347 Pup by matching its UV emission line profiles in and out of eclipse to synthetic lines using a 3D kinematic and radiation transfer model. Our results support the accretion disk origin of winds in non-magnetic CVs as opposite to the WD origin. Our main point concerns the importance of rotation for the UV emission line shapes in such systems. In particular, we show that the narrowing of the UV emission lines in V347 Pup during eclipse can be easily explained by the eclipse of the innermost part of the wind by the secondary and the resulting reductio…
Context: The bright southern Cepheid RS Pup is surrounded by a circumstellar nebula reflecting the light from the central star. The propagation of the light variations from the Cepheid inside the dusty nebula creates spectacular light echoes that can be observed up to large distances from the star itself. This phenomenon is currently unique in this class of stars. Aims: For this relatively distant star, the trigonometric parallax available from Hipparcos has a low accuracy. A careful observation of the light echoes has the potential to provide a very accurate, geometric distance to RS Pup. Met…
We present Chandra X-ray images and spectra of the most prominent cloud-shock interaction region in the Puppis A supernova remnant. The Bright Eastern Knot (BEK) has two main morphological components: (1) a bright compact knot that lies directly behind the apex of an indentation in the eastern X-ray boundary and (2) lying 1' westward behind the shock, a curved vertical structure (bar) that is separated from a smaller bright cloud (cap) by faint diffuse emission. Based on hardness images and spectra, we identify the bar and cap as a single shocked interstellar cloud. Its morphology strongly res…
We present an analysis of photometric and spectroscopic observations of the symbiotic binary system RX Pup with the aims of developing a reliable binary for the system and identifying mechanisms responsible for its spectacular activity. The binary is composed of a long-perod Mira variable surrounded by a thick dust shell and a hot white dwarf companion. The hot component produces practically all activity observed in the UV, optical and radio range, while variable obscuration of the Mira by circumstellar dust is responsible for long-term changes in the near-IR magnitudes. The observations show …
We report on a 67 ks HETG observation of the optically brightest early O-star, Zeta Pup (O4 f). Many resolved X-ray lines are seen in the spectra over a wavelength range of 5 to 25 A. Chandra has sufficient spectral resolution to study the velocity structure of isolated X-ray line profiles, and to distinguish the individual forbidden, intercombination, and resonance (fir) emission lines in several He-like ions even where the individual components are strongly Doppler broadened. In contrast with X-ray line profiles in other hot stars, Zeta Pup shows blue-shifted and skewed line profiles, provid…
To measure interstellar atomic deuterium abundances, we used the Interstellar Medium Absorption Profile Spectrograph (IMAPS) to obtain spectra of gamma2 Vel and zeta Pup over the wavelength interval 930-1150 A at a resolving power of 80,000. The interstellar D I features are resolved and cleanly separated from interstellar H I in the Ly-delta and Ly-epsilon profiles of both sight lines, and also in the Ly-gamma profile of zeta Pup. The D I profiles were modeled using a velocity template derived from several N I lines in the IMAPS spectra recorded at higher S/N. To find the best D I column dens…
We present an optical imaging study of 20 southern-sky nova remnants which has resulted in the discovery of four previously unknown nova shells -- V842 Cen, RR Cha, DY Pup and HS Pup. The study has also revealed previously unobserved features in three other known shells -- those of BT Mon, CP Pup and RR Pic. The images of BT Mon, V842 Cen, RR Cha, DY Pup and HS Pup have been processed using several deconvolution algorithms (Richardson-Lucy, maximum entropy and clean) in addition to straightforward point-source subtraction in an attempt to resolve the shells from the central stars. The use of f…
The first results of a photometric survey of faint Cataclysmic Variables are presented. V359 Cen is an SU UMa star with a period of 112 min. Even though observed at quiescence, the mass transfer rate in this old nova may be sufficiently high that in such a short period system (with its implied small mass ratio) the disc may be excited into an elliptical shape with the result that the observed brightness modulation gives a superhump period rather than an orbital period. XZ Eri is an eclipsing dwarf nova with an orbital period (P(orb)) of 88.1 min. HY Lup has only slight variability. V351 Pup, t…
In an attempt to catch new X-ray transients while they are still bright, the data taken by XMM-Newton as it slews between targets is being processed and cross-correlated with other X-ray observations as soon as the slew data appears in the XMM-Newton archive. A bright source, XMMSL1 J070542.7-381442, was detected on 9 Oct 2007 at a position where no previous X-ray source had been seen. The XMM slew data and optical data acquired with the Magellan Clay 6.5m telescope were used to classify the new object. No XMM slew X-ray counts are detected above 1keV and the source is seen to be ~750 times br…
