The optimal solution of an inter-city passenger transport network has been studied using Zipf's law for the city populations and the Gravity law describing the fluxes of inter-city passenger traffic. Assuming a fixed value for the cost of transport per person per kilometer we observe that while the total traffic cost decreases, the total wiring cost increases with the density of links. As a result the total cost to maintain the traffic distribution is optimal at a certain link density which vanishes on increasing the network size. At a finite link density the network is scale-free. Using this model the air-route network of India has been generated and an one-to-one comparison of the nodal degree values with the real network has been made.
Traffic congestion is one of the major challenges faced by the transportation industry. While this problem carries a high economical and environmental cost, the need for an efficient design of optimal paths for passengers in multilayer network infrastructures is imperative. We consider an approach based on optimal transport theory to route passengers preferably along layers that are more carbon efficient than the road, e.g. rails. By analyzing the impact of this choice on performance, we find that this approach reduces carbon emissions considerably, compared to shortest-path minimization. Simi…
The results of transportation infrastructure network analyses have been used to analyze complex networks in a topological context. However, most modeling approaches, including those based on complex network theory, do not fully account for real-life traffic patterns and may provide an incomplete view of network functions. This study utilizes trip data obtained from the Beijing Subway System to characterize individual passenger movement patterns. A directed weighted passenger flow network was constructed from the subway infrastructure network topology by incorporating trip data. The passenger f…
The main focus of this study is to collect and prepare data on air passengers traffic worldwide with the scope of analyze the impact of travel ban on the aviation sector. Based on historical data from January 2010 till October 2019, a forecasting model is implemented in order to set a reference baseline. Making use of airplane movements extracted from online flight tracking platforms and on-line booking systems, this study presents also a first assessment of recent changes in flight activity around the world as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. To study the effects of air travel ban on aviati…
A new public conveyance model applicable to buses and trains is proposed in this paper by using stochastic cellular automaton. We have found the optimal density of vehicles, at which the average velocity becomes maximum, significantly depends on the number of stops and passengers behavior of getting on a vehicle at stops. The efficiency of the hail-and-ride system is also discussed by comparing the different behavior of passengers. Moreover, we have found that a big cluster of vehicles is divided into small clusters, by incorporating information of the number of vehicles between successive sto…
Ride-sharing can reduce traffic congestion and thus reduce gas emissions and save travel time. However, transportation system with ride-sharing is currently inefficient due to low occupancy rate, high travel demand and some other factors. Existing literature did not consider ride-sharing with multi-request grouped in one trip. In our paper, we firstly proposed a graph-based algorithm that can obtain an approximation solution in polynomial time and then proposed an exact algorithm to solve this problem with maximizing the number of passenegers served in $O(1.2312^{|\mathcal{E}|})$ time.
Using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo optimization algorithm and a computer simulation, I find the passenger ordering which minimizes the time required to board the passengers onto an airplane. The model that I employ assumes that the time that a passenger requires to load his or her luggage is the dominant contribution to the time needed to completely fill the aircraft. The optimal boarding strategy may reduce the time required to board and airplane by over a factor of four and possibly more depending upon the dimensions of the aircraft. In addition, knowledge of the optimal boarding procedure can…
Improving accessibility is one of the major issues in rural and suburban transportation. With the recent technological improvement of automated vehicles, it is expected that automated demand responsive transit and automated demand responsive feeder transit potentially will be options to improve mobility in rural areas. One of the main concerns for the optimal automated demand responsive feeder transit operation is variation of passenger demand. Obviously, changes in passenger demand should alter the optimal operation and will result in different passenger travel times and vehicle operation cos…
With the rapid development of economy and the accelerated globalization process, the aviation industry plays more and more critical role in today's world, in both developed and developing countries. As the infrastructure of aviation industry, the airport network is one of the most important indicators of economic growth. In this paper, we investigate the evolution of Chinese airport network (CAN) via complex network theory. It is found that although the topology of CAN remains steady during the past several years, there are many dynamic switchings inside the network, which changes the relative…
Optimizing passengers routes is crucial to design efficient transportation networks. Recent results show that optimal transport provides an efficient alternative to standard optimization methods. However, it is not yet clear if this formalism has empirical validity on engineering networks. We address this issue by considering different response functions -- quantities determining the interaction between passengers -- in the dynamics implementing the optimal transport formulation. Particularly, we couple passengers' fluxes by taking their sum or the sum of their squares. The first choice natura…
Bus systems involve complex bus-bus and bus-passengers interactions. We study the problem of assigning buses to bus stops to minimise the average waiting time of passengers, W. An analytical theory for two specific cases of interactions is formulated: normal situation where all buses board passengers from every bus stop, versus novel express buses where disjoint subsets of non-interacting buses serve disjoint subsets of bus stops. Our formulation allows exact calculation of W for general loops in the two cases examined. Compared with regular buses, we present scenarios where express buses show…
This paper presents an interactive bathtub model for describing the traffic dynamics of ride-sourcing vehicles including non-shared taxis and ride-pooling cars. A city with a network of undifferentiated streets and solely served by ride-sourcing services is assumed to facilitate the modeling, isolate the congestion contribution, and accordingly develop control strategies. The proposed model is parsimonious with only input information of the total lane length of the network, the in-flux of demand, and the travel distance distributions. The output of the model, however, captures not only the tra…
Recently, with the availability of various traffic datasets, human mobility has been studied in different contexts. Researchers attempt to understand the collective behaviors of human movement with respect to the spatio-temporal distribution in traffic dynamics, from which a gravitational scaling law characterizing the relation between the traffic flow, population and distance has been found. However, most studies focus on the integrated properties of gravitational scaling, neglecting its dynamical evolution during different hours of a day. Investigating the hourly traffic flow data of Beijing…
Taxi services are a vital part of urban transportation, and a considerable contributor to traffic congestion and air pollution causing substantial adverse effects on human health. Sharing taxi trips is a possible way of reducing the negative impact of taxi services on cities, but this comes at the expense of passenger discomfort quantifiable in terms of a longer travel time. Due to computational challenges, taxi sharing has traditionally been approached on small scales, such as within airport perimeters, or with dynamical ad-hoc heuristics. However, a mathematical framework for the systematic …
The air transportation network, a fundamental component of critical infrastructure, is formed from a collection of individual air carriers, each one with a methodically designed and engineered network structure. We analyze the individual structures of the seven largest passenger carriers in the USA and find that networks with dense interconnectivity, as quantified by large k-cores for high values of k, are extremely resilient to both targeted removal of airports (nodes) and random removal of flight paths paths (edges). Such networks stay connected and incur minimal increase in an heuristic tra…
Public transport is one of the most disrupted sectors of the COVID-19 pandemic with reported ridership drops up to 90% in majorly affected countries. As many government authorities strive to partially resume activities, public transport operators are in an urgent need for models that can evaluate the impact of different social distancing policies on operational and passenger-related costs. In this study, we introduce a mixed-integer quadratic programming model for the redesign of public transport services considering the operational, passenger, and revenue loss-related costs by evaluating the …

We propose a Predictive Group Elevator Scheduler by using predictive information of passengers arrivals from a Transformer based destination predictor and a linear regression model that predicts remaining time to destinations. Through extensive empirical evaluation, we find that the savings of Average Waiting Time (AWT) could be as high as above 50% for light arrival streams and around 15% for medium arrival streams in afternoon down-peak traffic regimes. Such results can be obtained after carefully setting the Predicted Probability of Going to Elevator (PPGE) threshold, thus avoiding a majori…
