Aims: In the frame of the search for extrasolar planets and brown dwarfs around early-type stars, we present the results obtained for the F-type main-sequence star HD 60532 (F6V) with HARPS.
Methods: Using 147 spectra obtained with HARPS at La Silla on a time baseline of two years, we study the radial velocities of this star.
Results: HD 60532 radial velocities are periodically variable, and the variations have a Keplerian origin. This star is surrounded by a planetary system of two planets with minimum masses of 1 and 2.5 Mjup and orbital separations of 0.76 and 1.58 AU respectively. We also detect high-frequency, low-amplitude (10 m/s peak-to-peak) pulsations. Dynamical studies of the system point toward a possible 3:1 mean-motion resonance which should be confirmed within the next decade.
Clouds and hazes are important throughout our solar system and in the atmospheres of brown dwarfs and extrasolar giant planets. Among the brown dwarfs, clouds control the colors and spectra of the L-dwarfs; the disappearance of clouds helps herald the arrival of the T-dwarfs. The structure and composition of clouds will be among the first remote-sensing results from the direct detection of extrasolar giant planets.
(Abridged) Aims: Systematic surveys to search for exoplanets have been mostly dedicated to solar-type stars sofar. We developed in 2004 a method to extend such searches to earlier A-F type dwarfs and started spectroscopic surveys to search for planets and quantify the detection limit achievable when taking into account the stars properties and their actual levels of intrinsic variations. We have developed a new non-gray theory of the evolution, spectra, and colors of extrasolar giant planets (EGPs) and brown dwarfs that reveals their exotic nature and uniqueness. We have discovered that the fluxes of such objects for T$_{eff}$s from 1300 K to 100 K can be spectacularly higher in the near infrared bands than black body values and that their infrared colors are anomalously blue. As a consequence, EGPs and brown dwarfs reside in hitherto unoccupied realms of the H--R diagram and may be more easily found with current and planned telescopes than previously imagined.
We summarize and extend recent work on the theory of extrasolar giant planets (EGPs) and brown dwarfs, paying particular attention to Gliese 229 B, the albedos of EGPs, the compositions of substellar atmospheres, the connections with the giant planets in the solar system, cloud physics, and non-gray spectral synthesis. We present here the detection of a brown dwarf orbiting the A9V star HD180777. The radial velocity measurements, obtained with the ELODIE echelle spectrograph at the Haute-Provence Observatory, show a main variation with a period of 28.4 days. Assuming a primary mass of 1.7 Mo, the best Keplerian fit to the data leads to a minimum mass of 25 MJup for the companion (the true mass could be significantly higher). In the frame of the search for extrasolar planets and brown dwarfs around early-type stars, we present the results obtained on Beta-Pictoris, which is surrounded by a circumstellar disk that is warped by the presence of a planet. We used 97 spectra acquired with CORALIE and 230 spectra acquired with HARPS to characterize the radial velocity behavior of Beta-Pictoris and to infer constraints on the presence of a planet close to this star. We present evolutionary models for cool brown dwarfs and extra-solar giant planets. The models reproduce the main trends of observed methane dwarfs in near-IR color-magnitude diagrams. We also present evolutionary models for irradiated planets, coupling for the first time irradiated atmosphere profiles and inner structures. We focus on HD 209458-like systems and show that irradiation effects can substantially affect the radius of sub-jovian mass giant planets. We calculate detailed chemical abundance profiles for a variety of brown dwarf and extrasolar giant planet atmosphere models, focusing in particular on Gliese 229B, and derive the systematics of the changes in the dominant reservoirs of the major elements with altitude and temperature. We analyzed the Hipparcos astrometric observations of 47 stars that were discovered to harbor giant planets and 14 stars with brown-dwarf secondary candidates. The Hipparcos measurements were used together with the corresponding stellar radial-velocity data to derive an astrometric orbit for each system. To find out the significance of the derived astrometric orbits we applied a "permutation" technique by which we analyzed the permuted Hipparcos data to get false orbits. By using a relatively large field of view and going very deep, our survey can find all directly detectable stellar and massive brown dwarf companions (m>40 Mjup) within a 1000 AU orbit.
We present the results of a new series of non-gray calculations of the atmospheres, spectra, colors, and evolution of extrasolar giant planets (EGPs) and brown dwarfs for effective temperatures below 1300 K. We report the discovery of six new substellar companions of main-sequence stars, detected through multiple Doppler measurements with the instrument HARPS installed on the ESO 3.6m telescope, La Silla, Chile. These extrasolar planets are orbiting the stars BD -17 0063, HD 20868, HD 73267, HD 131664, HD 145377, HD 153950. We review some of the characteristics of irradiated extrasolar giant planets (EGPs), in anticipation of their direct detection from the ground and from space. Spectral measurements are the key to unlocking their structural and atmospheric characteristics and to determining the true differences between giant planets and brown dwarfs. In this spirit, the theoretical spectral and atmospheric calculations we summarize here are in support of the many searches for EGPs to be conducted in the coming decade by astronomers from around the world.
The orbital elements of extreme mass ratio binaries will be modified by interactions with surrounding circumstellar disks. For brown dwarf companions to Solar-type stars the resulting orbital migration is sufficient to drive short period systems to merger, creating a brown dwarf desert at small separations. We highlight the similarities and the differences between the migration of brown dwarfs and massive extrasolar planets, and discuss how observations can test a migration model for the brown dwarf desert.
Opacities and chemical abundance data are crucial ingredients of ultracool dwarf and extrasolar giant planet atmosphere models. We report here on the detailed sources of molecular opacity data employed by our group for this application. We calculate as a function of orbital distance, mass, and age the theoretical spectra and orbit-averaged planet/star flux ratios for representative wide-separation extrasolar giant planets (EGPs) in the optical, near-infrared, and mid-infrared. Stellar irradiation of the planet's atmosphere and the effects of water and ammonia clouds are incorporated and handled in a consistent fashion. We include predictions for 12 specific known EGPs. We report precise Doppler measurements of HD 142022 obtained during the past six years with the CORALIE echelle spectrograph at La Silla Observatory together with a few additional observations made recently with the HARPS echelle spectrograph. Our radial velocities reveal evidence of a planetary companion with an orbital period P = 1928 +53-39 days, an eccentricity e = 0.53 +0.23-0.18, and a velocity semiamplitude K = 92 +102-29 m/s. We present high contrast images of the hydrogen white dwarf G 29-38 taken in the near infrared with the Hubble Space Telescope and the Gemini North Telescope as part of a high contrast imaging search for substellar objects in orbit around nearby white dwarfs. We review the current limits on planetary companions for G29-38, the only nearby white dwarf with an infrared excess due to a dust disk. We discuss prospects of using multi-dimensional time-dependent simulations to study the atmospheres of brown dwarfs and extrasolar giant planets, including the processes of convection, radiation, dust formation, and rotation. We argue that reasonably realistic simulations are feasible, however, separated into two classes of local and global models. Numerical challenges are related to potentially large dynamic ranges, and the treatment of scattering of radiation in multi-D geometries.

We construct a maximum-likelihood algorithm - MAXLIMA, to derive the mass distribution of the extrasolar planets when only the minimum masses are observed. The algorithm derives the distribution by solving a numerically stable set of equations, and does not need any iteration or smoothing. Based on 50 minimum masses, MAXLIMA yields a distribution which is approximately flat in log M, and might rise slightly towards lower masses. The frequency drops off very sharply when going to masses higher than 10 Jupiter masses, although we suspect there is still a higher mass tail that extends up to proba…
We examine the effects of the engulfment of planets by giant stars on the evolution of late-type stars. We show that the rate at which dynamo-generated magnetic energy is being released exceeds 10% of the wind kinetic energy when the orbital angular momentum of the engulfed planet is more than ten times the angular momentum of the star as it leaves the main sequence. A significant enhancement in the mass-loss rate may be expected in this case, due to the formation of cool magnetic spots. A significant population of nearby stars have strong far-infrared excesses, now known to be due to circumstellar dust in regions analogous to the Kuiper Belt of our solar system, though orders of magnitude more dense. Recent sub-mm and mm imaging of these systems resolves the circumstellar dust and reveals complex structures, often in the form of rings with azimuthal non-axisymmetric variations. This structure might well be due to the presence of embedded brown dwarfs or planets. The results of new spectroscopic analyses of 30 stars with giant planet and/or brown dwarf companions are presented. Values for Teff and [Fe/H] are used in conjunction with Hipparcos data and Padova isochrones to derive masses, ages, and theoretical surface gravities. I present detailed analysis of the near infrared spectrum of HD 3651B, a faint, co-moving wide companion to the nearby planet-hosting star HD 3651. These data confirm the companion as a brown dwarf with spectral type T8, consistent with the analysis of Luhman et al. Application of the semi-empirical technique of Burgasser, Burrows & Kirkpatrick indicates that HD 3651B has Teff = 790+/-30 K and log g = 5.0+/-0.3 for a metallicity of [M/H] = 0.12+/-0.04, consistent with a mass M = 0.033+/-0.013 M_sun and an age of 0.7-4.7 Gyr. Using the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) aboard the Spitzer Space Telescope, we have obtained mid-infrared photometry of the least massive known brown dwarf in the Chamaeleon I star-forming region. For this young brown dwarf, OTS 44, we have constructed a spectral energy distribution (SED) from 0.8-8 um by combining the measurements at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, and 8.0 um from IRAC with ground-based photometry at I, J, H, and K. The magnetic white dwarf SDSS J121209.31+013627.7 exhibits a weak, narrow Halpha emission line whose radial velocity and strength are modulated on a period of ~90 minutes. Though indicative of irradiation on a nearby companion, no cool continuum component is evident in the optical spectrum, and IR photometry limits the absolute magnitude of the companion to M_J > 13.37. This is equivalent to an isolated L5 dwarf, with T_eff < 1700 K. The reflected spectra of extrasolar giant planets are primarily influenced by Rayleigh scattering, molecular absorption, and atmospheric condensates. We present model geometric albedo and phase integral spectra and Bond albedos for planets and brown dwarfs with masses between 0.8 and 70 Jupiter masses. Rayleigh scattering predominates in the blue while molecular absorption removes most red and infrared photons. Thus cloud-free atmospheres, found on giant planets with effective temperatures exceeding about 400 K, are quite dark in reflected light beyond 0.6 microns. In cooler atmospheres first …
We discuss the instrumental and data reduction techniques used to suppress speckle noise with the Simultaneous Differential Imager (SDI) implemented at the VLT and the MMT. SDI uses a double Wollaston prism and a quad filter to take 4 identical images simultaneously at 3 wavelengths surrounding the 1.62 um methane bandhead found in the spectrum of cool brown dwarfs and gas giants. The results of new spectroscopic analyses of 20 recently reported extrasolar planet parent stars are presented. The companion of one of these stars, HD 10697, has recently been shown to have a mass in the brown dwarf regime; we find [Fe/H] $= +0.16$ for it. For the remaining sample, we derive [Fe/H] estimates ranging from -0.41 to $+0.37$, with an average value of $+0.18 \pm 0.19$. Brown dwarfs bridge the gap between the stellar and planetary mass regimes. Evolving from conditions very similar to the lowest-mass stars, the atmospheres of older brown dwarfs closely resemble those expected in close-in extrasolar giant planets, and with cooler BDs still being discovered, more and more approach the properties of gas giants at wider separation. We show that the astrometric Hipparcos data of the stars hosting planet candidates are not accurate enough to yield statistically significant orbits. Therefore, the recent suggestion, based on the analysis of the Hipparcos data, that the orbits of the sample of planet candidates are not randomly oriented in space, is not supported by the data. Assuming random orientation, we derive the mass distribution of the planet candidates and show that it is flat in log M, up to about 10 Jupiter masses. The detection of transits is an efficient technique to uncover faint companions around stars. The full characterisation of the companions (M-type stars, brown dwarfs or exoplanets) requires high-resolution spectroscopy to measure properly masses and radii. With the advent of massive variability surveys over wide fields, the large number of possible candidates makes such a full characterisation impractical for all of them. We present the results of a survey of 45 young (<250 Myr), close (<50 pc) stars with the Simultaneous Differential Imager (SDI) implemented at the VLT and the MMT for the direct detection of extrasolar planets. We present a method to calculate vertical profiles of particle size distributions in condensation clouds of giant planets and brown dwarfs. The method assumes a balance between turbulent diffusion and sedimentation in horizontally uniform cloud decks. Calculations for the Jovian ammonia cloud are compared with results from previous methods. An adjustable parameter describing the efficiency of sedimentation allows the new model to span the range of predictions made by previous models. We report high-resolution spectroscopic follow-up observations of the faint transiting planet candidate OGLE-TR-33 (V = 14.7), located in the direction of the Galactic center. Small changes in the radial velocity of the star were detected that suggested initially the presence of a large planet or brown dwarf in orbit. However, further analysis revealed spectral line asymmetries that change in phase with the 1.95-day period, casting doubt on those measurements. Using the Hubble Space Telescope, the 4 m Blanco telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, and the Spitzer Space Telescope, we have performed deep imaging from 0.8 to 8 um of the southern subcluster in the Chamaeleon I star-forming region. In these data, we have discovered an object, Cha 110913-773444, whose colors and magnitudes are indicative of a very low-mass brown dwarf with a circumstellar disk. Radial velocity searches for extrasolar planets have discovered stars undergoing slow accelerations. The accelerations are likely due to one or more gas giant planets or brown dwarfs orbiting with period longer than the total time span of observations. The stellar acceleration is proportional to the mass of the companion divided by the square of its radius from the star. In this paper we predict the distribution of accelerations using a Monte Carlo method and assuming a semi-major axis and mass distribution for the companions. Context. Many efforts are being made to characterize extrasolar planetary systems and unveil the fundamental mechanisms of planet formation. We report the detection of a extrasolar planet candidate orbiting the G1 V star HD 39091. The orbital period is 2083 d and the eccentricity is 0.62. With a minimum (M sin $i$) mass of 10.3 M$_{\rm JUP}$ this object falls near the high mass end of the observed planet mass function, and may plausibly be a brown dwarf. Other characteristics of this system, including orbital eccentricity and metallicity, are typical of the well populated class of radial velocity planets in eccentric orbits around metal-rich stars.
