The polarization of light across individual spectral lines contains information about the circumstellar environment on very small spatial scales. We have obtained a large number of high precision, high resolution spectropolarimetric observations of Herbig Ae/Be, Classical Be and other emission-line stars collected on 117 nights of observations with the HiVIS spectropolarimeter at a resolution of R=13000 on the 3.67m AEOS telescope. We also have many observations from the ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeter at a resolution of R=68000 on the 3.6m CFH telescope. In roughly ~2/3 of the so-called "windy" or "disky" Herbig Ae/Be stars, the detected H-alpha linear polarization varies from our typical detection threshold near 0.1% to over 2%. In all but one HAe/Be star the detected polarization effect is not coincident with the H-alpha emission peak but is detected in and around the obvious absorptive part of the line profile. The qu-loops are dominated by the polarization in this absorptive region. In several stars the polarization varies in time mostly in the absorptive component and is not necessarily tied to corresponding variations in intensity. This is a new result not seen at lower resolution. In the Be and emission-line stars, 10 out of a sample of 30 show a typical broad depolarization effect but 4 of these 10 show weaker effects only visible at high resolution. Another 5 of 30 show smaller amplitude, more complex signatures. Six stars of alternate classification showed large amplitude (1-3%) absorptive polarization effects. These detections are largely inconsistent with the traditional disk-scattering and depolarization models.
We present NIR and MIR observations of eight embedded young stellar groups around Herbig Ae/Be stars (HAEBEs) using archived Spitzer IRAC data and 2MASS data. These young stellar groups are nearby ($\leq$ 1 kpc) and still embedded within their molecular clouds. In order to identify the young stellar objects in our sample, we use the color-color diagram of J - [3.6] vs. Ks - [4.5]. The Spitzer images of our sample show that the groups around HAEBEs, spectral types earlier than B8, are usually associated with bright infrared nebulosity. Within this, there are normally 10 - 50 young stars distrib…
Herbig Ae/Be stars (HAeBe) are pre-main sequence objects in the mass range between 2 and 8 solar masses. Their X-ray properties are uncertain and, as yet, unexplained. We want to elucidate the X-ray generating mechanism in HAeBes. We present a XMM-Newton observation of the HAeBe HD 163296. We analyse the light curve, the broad band and the grating spectra, fit emission measures and abundances and apply models for accretion and wind shocks. We find three temperature components ranging from 0.2 keV to 2.7 keV. The O VII He-like triplet indicates a X-ray formation region in a low density environm…
The origin of magnetic fields in intermediate-mass and high-mass stars is fundamentally a mystery. Clues toward solving this basic astrophysical problem can likely be found at the pre-main sequence (PMS) evolutionary stage. With this work, we perform the largest and most sensitive search for magnetic fields in pre-main sequence Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) stars. Sixty-eight observations of 50 HAeBe stars have been obtained in circularly polarised light using the FORS1 spectropolarimeter at the ESO VLT. An analysis of both Balmer and metallic lines reveals the possible presence of weak longitudinal ma…
We present spectra of a sample of Herbig Ae and Be (HAeBe) stars obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope. All but one of the Herbig stars show emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and seven of the spectra show PAH emission, but no silicate emission at 10 microns. The central wavelengths of the 6.2, 7.7--8.2, and 11.3 micron emission features decrease with stellar temperature, indicating that the PAHs are less photo-processed in cooler radiation fields. The apparent low level of photo processing in HAeBe stars, relative to other PAH emission sourc…
Using the HiVIS spectropolarimeter built for the Haleakala 3.7m AEOS telescope in Hawaii, we are collecting a large number of high precision spectropolarimetrc observations of stars. In order to precisely measure very small polarization changes, we have performed a number of polarization calibration techniques on the AEOS telescope and HiVIS spectrograph. We have extended our dedicated IDL reduction package and have performed some hardware upgrades to the instrument. We have also used the ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeter on CFHT to verify the HiVIS results with back-to-back observations of MWC 361 …
We present the V band polarization of 81 Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) candidates from the Pico dos Dias Survey (PDS). A good estimate of the foreground polarization was possible for most stars. A large number of objects shows intrinsic polarization, which indicates that their circumstellar envelopes have some kind of non-spherical symmetry. In this work, however, we study these data focusing on their relation with the interstellar medium. Our data seem to indicate a correlation between the position angle of the HAeBe star polarization and that of the corresponding field stars. This may be an evidence …
We present the ASCA results of intermediate-mass pre-main-sequence stars (PMSs), or Herbig Ae/Be stars (HAeBes). Among the 35 ASCA pointed-sources, we detect 11 plausible X-ray counterparts. X-ray luminosities of the detected sources in the 0.5-10 keV band are in the range of log LX ~30-32 ergs s-1, which is systematically higher than those of low-mass PMSs. This fact suggests that the contribution of a possible low-mass companion is not large. Most of the bright sources show significant time variation, particularly, two HAeBes - MWC 297 and TY CrA - exhibit flare-like events with long decay t…
Recently, strong, globally-ordered magnetic fields have been detected in some Herbig Ae and Be (HAeBe) stars, suggesting a possible evolutionary connection to main sequence magnetic chemically peculiar Ap and Bp stars. We have undertaken a detailed study of the binary system HD 72106, which contains a B9 magnetic primary and a HAeBe secondary, using the ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeter mounted on the CFHT. A careful analysis of the very young primary reveals that it has an approximately dipolar magnetic field geometry, strong chemical peculiarities, and strong surface chemical abundance inhomogenei…
We analyse the optical and IR spectra, as well as the spectral energy distribution (UV to mm) of the candidate Herbig Ae star HD100453. This star is particular, as it shows an energy distribution similar to that of other isolated Herbig Ae/Be stars (HAEBEs), but unlike most of them, it does not have a silicate emission feature at 10 um, as is shown in Meeus (2001). We confirm the HAEBE nature of HD100453 through an analysis of its optical spectrum and derived location in the H-R diagram. The IR spectrum of HD100453 is modelled by an optically thin radiative transfer code, from which we derive …
Using data from the EROS2 microlensing survey, we report the discovery of two blue objects with irregular photometric behaviour of $ΔV \sim 0.1$-0.4 mag on time scales of 20 to 200 days. They show a bluer when fainter behaviour. Subsequent spectra taken with the ESO 3.6m telescope show spectral type B4eIII and B2eIV-V with strong $H α$ emission. These objects resemble the Herbig AeBe but also classical Be stars. At this stage, it is not possible to distinguish unambiguously between pre-main sequence and classical Be nature. If we favour the pre-main sequence interpretation, they are more lumin…
We show here that the absorptive H-alpha polarized line profile previously seen in many Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) stars is a nearly ubiquitous feature of other types of embedded or obscured stars. This characteristic 1% linear polarization variation across the absorptive part of the H-alpha line is seen in Post-AGB stars as well as RV-Tau, Delta-Scuti, and other types. Each of these stars shows evidence of obscuration by intervening circumstellar hydrogen gas and the polarization effect is in the absorptive component, consistent with an optical pumping model. We present ESPaDOnS spectropolarimetric…
We intend to investigate separately the photospheric and circumstellar (CS) magnetic field components in seven Herbig Ae stars. The study is based on low-resolution (R ~ 2000 and 4000) spectropolarimetric data collected from 2003 to 2005 at the Very Large Telescope (ESO, Chile) with the multi-mode instrument FORS1. We show that the spectropolarimetric results strongly depend on the level of CS contribution to the stellar spectra. We have improved the determination accuracy of magnetic fields up to the 7 sigma level in the two Herbig Ae stars HD139614 and HD144432, observed in 2005 when these o…
Our recent discoveries of magnetic fields in a small number of Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) stars, the evolutionary progenitors of main sequence A/B stars, raise new questions about the origin of magnetic fields in the intermediate mass stars. The favoured fossil field hypothesis suggests that a few percent of magnetic pre-main sequence A/B stars should exhibit similar magnetic strengths and topologies to the magnetic Ap/Bp stars. In this talk I will present the methods that we have used to characterise the magnetic fields of the Herbig Ae/Be stars, as well as our first conclusions on the origin of ma…
We observed molecular hydrogen around a sample of pre-main sequence stars in order to better characterize their gaseous CS environments. We analyzed the FUSE (Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer) spectra of a sample of Herbig Ae/Be stars (HAeBes) covering a broad spectral range, including the main-sequence A5 star Beta-Pictoris. To better diagnose the origin of the detected H2 and its excitation conditions, we used a model of a photodissociation region. Our analysis demonstrates that the excitation of H2 is clearly different around most of the HAeBes compared to the interstellar medium. Mor…
From medium-resolution radio images, DR 16 was suspected to be a large cometary nebula. To test this suggestion we obtained a higher resolution (15\arcsec) VLA continuum map. We also analyzed data from the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey in continuum, H I line, and IR. These data were supplemented by published near-infrared (J, H, K) stellar photometric results and MSX 8.28 micrometer data. We suggest that DR 16 is the diffuse H II region of an ongoing star formation site at a distance of about 3 kpc. The complicated radio picture arises from the superposition of diffuse H II with the remains o…
We present Halpha spectropolarimetry observations of a sample of 23 Herbig Ae/Be stars. A change in the linear polarisation across Halpha is detected in a large fraction of the objects, which indicates that the regions around Herbig stars are flattened (disc-like) on small scales. A second outcome of our study is that the spectropolarimetric signatures for the Ae stars differ from those of the Herbig Be stars, with characteristics changing from depolarisation across Halpha in the Herbig Be stars, to line polarisations in the Ae group. The frequency of depolarisations detected in the Herbig Be …
The polarization of light across spectral lines contains information about the circumstellar material on small spatial scales. Many models relate the circumstellar environment to observable polarization changes across spectral lines. However, measuring signals at the 0.1% level requires a very careful control of systematic effects. We have recently built a high-resolution spectropolarimeter for the HiVIS spectrograph on the 3.67m AEOS telescope and have obtained a large number of high precision spectropolarimetric observations of Herbig Ae/Be, Classical Be and other stars. The detected linear …
Using the HiVIS spectropolarimeter built for the Haleakala 3.7m AEOS telescope, we have obtained a large number of high precision spectropolarimetrc observations (284) of Herbig AeBe stars collected over 53 nights totaling more than 300 hours of observing. Our sample of five HAeBe stars: AB Aurigae, MWC480, MWC120, MWC158 and HD58647, all show systematic variations in the linear polarization amplitude and direction as a function of time and wavelength near the H-alpha line. In all our stars, the H-alpha line profiles show evidence of an intervening disk or outflowing wind, evidenced by strong …
The origin of the magnetic fields of the chemically peculiar main sequence Ap/Bp stars is still matter of intense debate. The recent discoveries of magnetic fields in Herbig Ae/Be stars using high resolution data obtained with the spectropolarimeter ESPaDOnS at CFHT provide a strong argument in favour of the fossil field hypothesis. Using a simple oblique rotator model of a centered dipole, we fit the Stokes V LSD profiles of two of these magnetic HAeBe stars, HD 200775 and V380 Ori, as well as their variations on timescales from days to months. We find that in both cases the dipole hypothesis…
We present optical spectra of 45 intermediate mass Herbig Ae/Be stars. Together with the multi-epoch spectroscopic and photometric data compiled for a large sample of these stars and ages estimated for individual stars by using pre-main sequence evolutionary tracks, we have studied the evolution of emission line activity in them. We find that, on average, the H_alpha emission line strength decreases with increasing stellar age in HAeBe stars, indicating that the accretion activity gradually declines during the PMS phase. This would hint at a relatively long-lived (a few Myr) process being resp…
We present Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) spectra of fourteen isolated Herbig Ae/Be (HAEBE) stars, to study the characteristics of their circumstellar dust. These spectra show large star-to-star differences, in the emission features of both carbon-rich and oxygen-rich dust grains. The IR spectra were combined with photometric data ranging from the UV through the optical into the sub-mm region. We defined two key groups, based upon the spectral shape of the infrared region. The derived results can be summarized as follows: (1) the continuum of the IR to sub-mm region of all stars can be recon…
We present a catalogue of previously unpublished optical and infrared photometry for a sample of 162 emission-line objects and shell stars visible from the southern hemisphere. The data were obtained between 1978 and 1997 in the Walraven (WULBV), Johnson/Cousins (UBV(RI)_c) and ESO and SAAO near-infrared (JHKLM) photometric systems. Most of the observed objects are Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) stars or HAeBe candidates appearing in the list of HAeBe candidates of Thé et al. (1994), although several B[e] stars, LBVs and T Tauri are also included in our sample. For many of the stars the data presented h…
We have observed 14 Herbig Ae/Be sources with the long-baseline near-IR Palomar Testbed Interferometer, All except two sources are resolved at 2.2 um, with angular sizes generally <5 mas. We determine the size scales and orientations of the 2.2 um emission using various models: uniform disks, Gaussians, uniform rings, flat accretion disks with inner holes, and flared disks with puffed-up inner rims; 7 objects display significantly inclined morphologies, generally compatible with the outer disk geometries inferred from millimeter interferometric observations, implying that HAEBE disks are not s…
We present diffraction-limited bispectrum speckle interferometry observations of four well-known Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) stars, LkHa 198, Elias 1, HK Ori and V380 Ori. For two of these, LkHa 198 and Elias 1, we present the first unambiguous detection of close companions. The plane of the orbit of the new LkHa 198 companion appears to be significantly inclined to the plane of the circumprimary disk, as inferred from the orientation of the outflow. We show that the Elias 1 companion may be a convective star, and suggest that it could therefore be the true origin of the X-ray emission from this obje…
We present linear spectropolarimetric data for eight Herbig Be and four Herbig Ae stars at H alpha, H beta and H gamma. Changes in the linear polarisation are detected across all Balmer lines for a large fraction of the observed objects, confirming that the small-scale regions surrounding these objects are flattened (i.e. disk-like). Furthermore, all objects with detections show similar characteristics at the three spectral lines, despite differences in transition probability and optical depth going from H alpha to H gamma. A large fraction of early Herbig Be stars (B0-B3) observed show line d…
H_alpha spectropolarimetry on Herbig Ae/Be stars shows that the innermost regions of intermediate mass (2 -- 15 M_sun) Pre-Main Sequence stars are flattened. This may be the best evidence to date that the higher mass Herbig Be stars are embedded in circumstellar discs. A second outcome of our study is that the spectropolarimetric signatures for the lower mass Herbig Ae stars differ from those of the higher mass Herbig Be stars. Depolarisations across H_alpha are observed in the Herbig Be group, whereas line polarisations are common amongst the Herbig Ae stars in our sample. These line polarisa…
The interpretation of X-ray detections from Herbig Ae/Be stars is disputed as it is not clear if these intermediate-mass pre-main sequence stars are able to drive a dynamo and ensuing phenomena of magnetic activity. Alternative X-ray production mechanisms, related to stellar winds, star-disk magnetospheres, or unresolved late-type T Tauri star companions have been proposed. In a series of papers we have been investigating high-resolution X-ray Chandra images of Herbig Ae/Be and main-sequence B-type stars to test the T Tauri hypothesis by spatially resolving known visual companions from the pri…
We present the outcomes of a Chandra X-ray Observatory snapshot study of five nearby Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) stars which are kinematically linked with the Oph-Sco-Cen Association (OSCA). Optical photometric and spectroscopic followup was conducted for the HD 104237 field. The principal result is the discovery of a compact group of pre-main sequence (PMS) stars associated with HD 104237 and its codistant, comoving B9 neighbor epsilon Chamaeleontis AB. We name the group after the most massive member. The group has five confirmed stellar systems ranging from spectral type B9-M5, including a remarkab…
Context: Recent spectropolarimetric observations of Herbig Ae/Be stars have yielded new arguments in favour of a fossil origin for the magnetic fields of intermediate mass stars. Aims: To study the evolution of these magnetic fields, and their impact on the evolution of the angular momentum of these stars during the pre-main sequence phase, we observed Herbig Ae/Be members of young open clusters of various ages. Methods: We obtained high-resolution spectropolarimetric observations of Herbig Ae/Be stars belonging to the young open clusters NGC 6611 (< 6 Myr), NGC 2244 (~1.9 Myr), and NGC 2264 (…
We report the discovery of 5 new Herbig Ae/Be candidate stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud in addition to the 2 reported in Beaulieu et al. (2001). We discuss these 7 HAeBe candidate stars in terms of (1) their irregular photometric variability, (2) their near infrared emission, (3) their Halpha emission and (4) their spectral type. One star has the typical photometric behaviour that is observed only among Pre-Main Sequence UX Orionis type stars. The objects are more luminous than Galactic HAeBe stars and Large Magellanic Cloud HAeBe candidates of the same spectral type. The stars were discov…
Studies of stellar magnetism at the pre-main sequence phase can provide important new insights into the detailed physics of the late stages of star formation, and into the observed properties of main sequence stars. This is especially true at intermediate stellar masses, where magnetic fields are strong and globally organised, and therefore most amenable to direct study. This paper reviews recent high-precision spectropolarimetric observations of pre-main sequence Herbig Ae/Be stars, which are yielding qualitatively new information about intermediate-mass stars: the origin and evolution of the…
We have obtained accurate circular spectropolarimetric observations for a sample of Vega-like and Herbig Ae/Be stars with FORS1 at the VLT in an attempt to detect their magnetic fields. No magnetic field could be diagnosed in any Vega-like star. The most accurate determination of a magnetic field, at 2.6 sigma level, has been performed for the Vega-like star iota Cen for which we have measured <B_z> = -77+-30 G. In the prototype of Vega-like stars, the star beta Pictoris, which shows conspicuous signs of chromospheric activity, a longitudinal magnetic field is measured only at ~1.5 sigma level…
We present Halpha spectropolarimetry of a large sample of pre-main sequence (PMS) stars of low and intermediate mass, and argue that the technique is a powerful tool in studying the circumstellar geometry around these objects. For the intermediate mass (2 -- 15 Msun) Herbig Ae/Be stars we find that 16 out of 23 show a line effect, which immediately implies that flattening is common among these objects. Furthermore, we find a significant difference in Halpha spectropolarimetry behaviour between the Herbig Be and Ae groups. For the Herbig Be stars, the concept of an electron scattering disc is s…
We present the results of medium resolution (Delta v = 60 km/s) spectropolarimetric observations across Halpha of a sample of B[e] and Herbig Be objects. A change in linear polarization across Halpha is detected in a large fraction of the objects. Halpha in the spectra of HD 37806 and HD 50138 each consist of a double-peaked polarized line and a superposed unpolarized single emission peak, suggesting two distinct line-forming regions. Multiple observations of HD 45677 allow for the separation of electron and dust scattering effects for the first time: the data indicate that the dust-scattering…
Among the A/B stars, about 5% host large-scale organised magnetic fields. These magnetic stars show also abundance anomalies in their spectra, and are therefore called the magnetic Ap/Bp stars. Most of these stars are also slow rotators compared to the normal A and B stars. Today, one of the greatest challenges concerning the Ap/Bp stars is to understand the origin of their slow rotation and their magnetic fields. The favoured hypothesis for the latter is that the fields are fosils, which implies that the magnetic fields subsist throughout the different evolutionary phases, and in particular d…
The near-star environment around young stars is very dynamic with winds, disks, and outflows. These processes are involved in star and planet formation, and influence the formation and habitability of planets around host stars. Even for the closest young stars, this will not be imaged even after the completion of the next generation of telescopes decades from now and other proxies must be used. The polarization of light across individual spectral lines is such a proxy that contains information about the geometry and density of circumstellar material on these small spatial scales. We have recen…
A general theoretical framework is developed for interpreting spectropolarimetric observations of optically thin emission line scattering from small dust particles. Spatially integrated and spatially resolved line profiles of both scattered intensity and polarization are calculated analytically from a variety of simple kinematic models. These calculations will provide a foundation for further studies of emission line scattering from dust and electrons in such diverse astrophysical environments as Herbig-Haro objects, symbiotic stars, starburst galaxies and active galactic nuclei.
Recent spectropolarimetric observations of Herbig AeBe stellar systems show linear polarization variability with wavelength and epoch near their obscured H-alpha emission. Surprisingly, this polarization is not coincident with the H-alpha emission peak but is variable near the absorptive part of the line profile. With a new and novel model we show here that this is evidence of optical pumping - anisotropy of the incident radiation that leads to a linear polarization-dependent optical depth within the intervening hydrogen wind or disk cloud. This effect can yield a larger polarization signal th…
Detailed comparisons are made between observations of scattered light upstream of the head of the HH~1 jet and predictions of simple scattering models. It is shown that, in order to unambiguously determine the velocity of the head of the jet (bow shock) with respect to the upstream dust, existing spectroscopic observations are insufficient and that spectropolarimetric observations of the scattered light are necessary. Such an independent measure of the bow shock velocity is important in order to test ``multiple outflow'' theories of Herbig-Haro jets. It is also shown 2that the scattering dust …
We present linear Halpha spectropolarimetry of the classical T Tauri star RY Tau. A change in the polarization percentage and position angle across Halpha is detected, which suggests that line photons are scattered in a rotating disc. We derive the position angle from the slope of the loop in the (Q,U) diagram and find it to be 146 +/- 3 degrees. This is perpendicular to the position angle of the disc of 48 +/- 5 degrees as deduced from submillimeter imaging by Koerner & Sargent (1995). This finding is consistent, as scattering off the imaged millimeter disc is expected to yield a polarization…
The near-star environment around obscured stars is very dynamic. Many classes of stars show evidence for winds, disks, inflows and outflows with many phenomena occurring simultaneously. These processes are involved in stellar evolution, star and planet formation, and influence the formation and habitability of planets around host stars. Even for the nearest stars, this region will not be imaged even after the completion of the next generation of telescopes. Other methods for measuring the physical properties of circumstellar material must be developed. The polarization of light across spectral…
We report new Spitzer observations of intermediate mass stars in two regions of the Orion OB1 association located in the subassociations OB1a ($\sim$10 Myr) and OB1b ($\sim$5 Myr). In a representative sample of stars earlier than F5 of both stellar groups, we find a population of stars surrounded of debris disks, without excess in the IRAC bands and without emission lines in their optical spectra, but with a varying degree of 24{\micron} excess. Comparing our samples with 24{\micron} observations of intermediate mass stars in other stellar groups, spanning a range of ages from 2.5 Myr to 150 M…
In order to study the inner parts of the circumstellar material around optically faint, infrared bright objects, we present the first medium-resolution spectropolarimetric data taken in the near-infrared. In this paper we discuss Pa beta line data of GL 490, a well-known embedded massive young stellar object, and of MWC 349A and MWC 342, two optically faint stars that are proposed to be in the pre-main sequence phase of evolution. As a check on the method, the classical Be star zeta Tau, known to display line polarization changes at optical wavelengths, was observed as well. Three of our targe…
