(Abridged) We examine the X-ray luminosity scaling relations of 31 nearby galaxy clusters from the Representative XMM-Newton Cluster Structure Survey (REXCESS). The objects are selected in X-ray luminosity only, optimally sampling the cluster luminosity function; temperatures range from 2 to 9 keV and there is no bias toward any particular morphological type. Pertinent values are extracted in an aperture corresponding to R_500, estimated using the tight correlation between Y_X and total mass. The data exhibit power law relations between bolometric X-ray luminosity and temperature, Y_X and total mass, all with slopes that are significantly steeper than self-similar expectations. We examine the causes for the steepening, finding that the primary driver appears to be a systematic variation of the gas content with mass. Scatter about the relations is dominated in all cases by the presence of cool cores. The natural logarithmic scatter about the raw X-ray luminosity-temperature relation is about 70%, and about the X-ray luminosity-Y_X relation it is 40%. Cool core and morphologically disturbed systems occupy distinct regions in the residual space with respect to the best fitting mean relation, the former lying systematically to the high luminosity side, the latter to the low luminosity side. Exclusion of the central regions serves to reduce the scatter by more than 50%. Using Y_X as a mass proxy, we derive a Malmquist bias corrected luminosity-mass relation and compare with previous determinations. Our results indicate that luminosity can be a reliable mass proxy with controllable scatter, which has important implications for upcoming all-sky cluster surveys, such as those to be undertaken with Planck and eROSITA, and ultimately for the use of clusters for cosmological purposes.
We present a study of the structural and scaling properties of the gas distributions in the intracluster medium (ICM) of 31 nearby (z < 0.2) clusters observed with XMM-Newton, which together comprise the Representative XMM-Newton Cluster Structure Survey (REXCESS). In contrast to previous studies, this sample is unbiased with respect to cluster dynamical state, and it fully samples the cluster X-ray luminosity function. The clusters cover a temperature range of 2.0 -- 8.5 keV and possess a variety of morphologies. The sampling strategy allows us to compare clusters with a wide range of central…
The largest uncertainty for cosmological studies using clusters of galaxies is introduced by our limited knowledge of the statistics of galaxy cluster structure, and of the scaling relations between observables and cluster mass. To improve on this situation we have started an XMM-Newton Large Programme for the in-depth study of a representative sample of 33 galaxy clusters, selected in the redshift range z=0.055 to 0.183 from the REFLEX Cluster Survey, having X-ray luminosities above 0.4 X 10^44 h_70^-2 erg s^-1 in the 0.1 - 2.4 keV band. This paper introduces the sample, compiles properties o…
Two frequency observations, mainly at 1.4 and 5 GHz from the VLA, have been used to study spectral variations along the lobes of some nearby low luminosity radio galaxies that constitute a representative sample selected from the B2 catalogue. The variations of the spectral index have been interpreted as being due to synchrotron and inverse Compton losses and characteristic spectral ages are deduced for the relativistic electrons. The radiative ages are in the range of several 10^7 years. These ages correlate well with the source sizes. They also appear to be consistent with dynamical ages dete…
We present a sample of 58 Be stars containing objects of spectral types O9 to B8.5 and luminosity classes III to V. We have obtained 3670 - 5070 Angstrom spectra of the sample which are used to derive spectral types and rotational velocities. We discuss the distribution of spectral types and rotational velocities obtained and conclude that there are no significant selection effects in our sample.
We present and discuss theoretical pulsational predictions concerning the properties of Classical Cepheids. The computations have been performed for three different chemical compositions taken as representative of Cepheids in the Magellanic Clouds and in the Galaxy. The resulting PL relations are significantly dependent on metallicity, with the amplitude of the metallicity effect decreasing at the longer wavelength. At variance with several empirical suggestions appeared in the literature, we find that at fixed period the metal-rich pulsators should be fainter than the metal-poor ones. Tight P…
We present infra-red (JHK) photometry of 52 isolated Be stars of spectral types O9--B9 and luminosity classes III--V. We describe a new method of reduction, enabling separation of interstellar reddening and circumstellar excess. Using this technique we find that the disc emission makes a maximum contribution to the optical (B-V) colour of a few tenths of a magnitude. We find strong correlations between a range of emission lines (Hα, Brγ, Br11, and Br18) from the Be stars' discs, and the circumstellar continuum excesses. We also find that stellar rotation and disc excess are correlated.
We present the bivariate brightness distribution (BBD) for the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) based on a preliminary subsample of 45,000 galaxies. The BBD is an extension of the galaxy luminosity function incorporating surface brightness information. It allows the measurement of the local luminosity density, j_B, and the galaxy luminosity and surface brightness distributions while accounting for surface brightness selection biases. The recovered 2dFGRS BBD shows a strong surface brightness-luminosity relation (M_B~2.4μ_e). The luminosity-density is dominated by normal galaxies and the lum…
We present the SAO 6m telescope spectroscopy of a blue compact galaxy (BCG) HS 2134+0400 discovered in frame of the dedicated Hamburg/SAO survey for Low Metallicity BCGs (HSS-LM). Its very low abundance of oxygen (12+log(O/H) = 7.44), as well as other heavy elements (S, N, Ne, Ar), assigns this dwarf galaxy to the group of BCGs with the lowest metal content. There are only eight that low metallicity among several thousand known BCGs in the nearby Universe. The abundance ratios for the heavy elements (S/O, Ne/O, N/O, and Ar/O) are well consistent with the typical values of other very metal-poor…
Galactic binary systems that contain a black hole candidate emit hard X-rays in their low luminosity mode. We show that this emission can be understood as due to the Compton scattering of photons from the companion star and/or the accretion disk by relativistic electrons in a jet. The same electrons are also responsible for the radio emission. Two sources -- XTE J1118+480 and Cygnus X-1 -- are modelled as representatives of black holes with low and high luminosity companion stars respectively. We further show that the ultraluminous compact X-ray sources observed in nearby galaxies have the pro…
We present H band (1.53 - 1.69 micron) spectra of 57 isolated Be stars of spectral types O9-B9 and luminosity classes III,IV & V. The HI Brackett (n-4) series is seen in emission from Br 11-18, and FeII emission is also apparent for a subset of those stars with HI emission. No emission from species with a higher excitation temperature, such as He II or CIII is seen, and no forbidden line emission is present. A subset of 12 stars show no evidence for emission from any species; these stars appear indistinguishable from normal B stars of a comparable spectral type. In general the line ratios cons…
We present near-infrared imaging with ESO VLT+ISAAC of the host galaxies of low luminosity quasars in the redshift range 1 < z < 2, aimed at investigating the relationship between the nuclear and host galaxy luminosities at high redshift. This work complements our previous study to trace the cosmological evolution of the host galaxies of high luminosity quasars (Falomo et al. 2004). The new sample includes 15 low luminosity quasars, nine radio-loud (RLQ) and six radio-quiet (RQQ). They have similar distribution of redshift and optical luminosity, and together with the high luminosity quasars t…
We present UBVRI photometry of the open cluster NGC 2422 (age $\sim 10^8$ yr) down to a limiting magnitude $V\simeq19$. These data are used to derive the Luminosity and Mass Functions and to study the cluster spatial distribution. By considering the color-magnitude diagram data and adopting a representative cluster main sequence, we obtained a list of candidate cluster members based on a photometric criterion. Using a reference field region and an iterative procedure, a correction for contaminating field stars has been derived in order to obtain the Luminosity and the Mass Functions in the $M=…
We use the INTEGRAL all-sky hard X-ray survey to perform a statistical study of a representative sample of nearby AGN. Our entire all-sky sample consists of 127 AGN, of which 91 are confidently detected (>5 sigma) on the time-averaged map obtained with the IBIS/ISGRI instrument and 36 are detected only during single observations. Among the former there are 66 non-blazar AGN located at |b|>5 deg, where the survey's identification completeness is ~93%, which we use for calculating the AGN luminosity function and X-ray absorption distribution. In broad agreement with previous studies, we find tha…
The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of dusty high-redshift galaxies are poorly sampled in frequency and spatially unresolved. Their form is crucially important for estimating the large luminosities of these galaxies accurately, for providing circumstantial evidence concerning their power sources, and for estimating their redshifts in the absence of spectroscopic information. We discuss the suite of parameters necessary to describe their SEDs adequately without introducing unnecessary complexity. We compare directly four popular descriptions, explain the key degeneracies between the parame…
We use 64 square degrees of deep V and R CCD images to measure the local V and R band luminosity function of galaxies. The V_0<16.7 and R_0<16.2 redshift samples contain 1250 galaxies and are 98% complete. We apply k-corrections before the magnitude selection so that the completeness is to the same depth for all spectral types. The V and R faint end slopes are surprisingly identical: alpha = -1.07+-0.09. Representative Schechter function parameters for H_0=100 are: M^*_R = -20.88+-0.09, phi^*_R = 0.016+-0.003 Mpc^-3 and M^*_V = -20.23+-0.09, phi^*_V = 0.020+-0.003 Mpc^-3. The V and R local lum…
We investigate the X-ray properties of the color-selected radio-quiet quasars (RQQs) in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Early Data Release using ROSAT, Chandra, and XMM-Newton data. In the 0.16-6.28 redshift range, 136 RQQs have X-ray detections (69 from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey, RASS), while for 70 RQQs X-ray upper limits are obtained. The well-defined selection method utilized by the SDSS, coupled with the tight radio constraints from the FIRST/NVSS surveys, allow us to define a representative sample of optically selected RQQs whose broad-band spectral energy distributions (characterized…
This paper addresses the global molecular gas properties of a representative sample of galaxies hosting low-luminosity quasistellar objects. An abundant supply of gas is necessary to fuel both the active galactic nucleus and any circum-nuclear starburst activity of QSOs. We selected a sample of nearby low-luminosity QSO host galaxies that is free of infrared excess biases. All objects are drawn from the Hamburg-ESO survey for bright UV-excess QSOs, have DEC>-30 degrees and redshifts that do not exceed z=0.06. The IRAM 30m telescope was used to measure the CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) transition in para…
We study star formation in a sample of 345 galaxies in 167 pairs and compact groups drawn from the original CfA2 Redshift Survey and from a follow-up search for companions. We construct our sample with attention to including pairs with luminosity contrast |Δm_R| >= 2. These 57 galaxies with |Δm_R| >= 2 provide a set of nearby representative cases of minor interactions, a central feature of the hierarchical galaxy formation model. Here we report the redshifts and positions of the 345 galaxies in our sample, and of 136 galaxies in apparent pairs that are superpositions. In the pairs sample as a …
Based on GALEX and IRAS/Spitzer datasets, we have found that both FUV and FIR luminosity functions (LFs) show a strong evolution from z=0 to z=1, but the FIR LF evolves much stronger than the FUV one. Consequently, the FIR/FUV luminosity density ratio increases from 4 (z=0) to 15 (z=1). It means that more than 80% of the star-forming activity in the Universe is hidden by dust at z=1. To explore this issue further, we have performed a combined analysis of the galaxy sample in FUV and FIR. For the Local Universe we used GALEX-IRAS sample, whereas at z=1 we used the Lyman-break galaxy sample sele…
We present near-infrared H-band (1.65micron) observations and surface brightness profile decompositions for 75 faint (13.5 < m_p < 18.5) galaxies, primarily taken among dwarf Ellipticals members of the Virgo cluster. We model their surface brightness profiles with a de Vaucouleurs (D), exponential (E), mixed (bulge+disk or M) or truncated (T) law, and we derive for each galaxy the H band effective surface brightness (mu_e) and effective radius (r_e), the asymptotic total magnitude H_T and the light concentration index C_31. Combining the present data with those previously obtained by our group…
Images of IRAS galaxies with a range of IR properties are examined for bright knots, both within and outside the galaxy. These are found almost exclusively in galaxies with steep IR spectra, but over a wide range of IR luminosity, and usually without strong nuclear activity. In most cases, the knots are likely to be star-formation induced by tidal interactions, and are seen in the early stages of such interactions. Detailed photometry is presented of knots in six representative galaxies. The knots appear to have a wide range of colour and luminosity, but it is argued that many are heavily redd…
We present deep V and I photometry for the open cluster NGC 4815 and four surrounding Galactic fields down to a limiting magnitude $V\sim25$. These data are used to study cluster spatial extension by means of star counts, and to derive the luminosity (LF) and mass function (MF). The radius turns out to be $3.6\pm0.3 arcmin$ at V=19.0 level, whereas the mass amounts at $880\pm230 m_{\odot}$ down to V=20.8. From the color-magnitude diagram, we obtain the LFs in the V and I bands, using both the standard histogram and an adaptive kernel. After correction for incompleteness and field star contamin…
GRB031203 was observed by XMM-Newton twice, first with an observation beginning 6 hours after the burst, and again after 3 days. The afterglow had average 0.2-10.0keV fluxes for the first and second observations of 4.2+/-0.1x10^-13 and 1.8+/-0.1x10^-13 erg/cm^2/s respectively, decaying very slowly according to a power-law with an index of -0.55+/-0.05. The prompt soft X-ray flux, inferred from a detection of the dust echo of the prompt emission, strongly implies that this burst is very soft and should be classified as an X-ray flash (XRF) and further, implies a steep temporal slope (<~-1.7) be…
e present wide field deep UBVI photometry for the previously unstudied open cluster NGC 4852 down to a limiting magnitude $I\sim24$, obtained from observations taken with the Wide Field Imager camera on-board the MPG/ESO 2.2m telescope at La Silla (ESO, Chile). These data are used to obtain the first estimate of the cluster basic parameters, to study the cluster spatial extension by means of star counts, and to derive the Luminosity (LF) and Mass Function (MF). The cluster radius turns out to be $5.0\pm1.0$ arcmin. The cluster emerges clearly from the field down to V=20 mag. At fainter magnitu…
We use HST NICMOS continuum and Pa-alpha observations to study the near-infrared and star-formation properties of a representative sample of 30 local (d ~ 35-75Mpc) luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs, infrared 8-1000um luminosities of L_IR=11-11.9[Lsun]). The data provide spatial resolutions of 25-50pc and cover the central ~3.3-7.1kpc regions of these galaxies. About half of the LIRGs show compact (~1-2kpc) Pa-alpha emission with a high surface brightness in the form of nuclear emission, rings, and mini-spirals. The rest of the sample show Pa-alpha emission along the disk and the spiral arms e…
The environmental properties of a sample of 31 hard X-ray selected AGN are investigated, from scales of 500 kpc down to 30 kpc, and are compared to a control sample of inactive galaxies. The AGN all lie in the redshift range 0.4<z<0.6. The accretion luminosity-density of the Universe peaks close to this redshift range, and the AGN in the sample have X-ray luminosities close to the knee in the hard X-ray luminosity function, making them representative of the population which dominated this important phase of energy conversion. Using both the spatial clustering amplitude and near neighbour count…
We report on a complete CCD imaging survey of 226 elliptical galaxies in the North-East quadrant of the Virgo cluster, representative of the properties of giant and dwarf elliptical galaxies in this cluster. We fit their radial light profiles with the Sersic r^(1/n) model of light distribution. We confirm the result of Graham & Guzman (2003) that the apparent dichotomy between E and dE galaxies in the luminosity-<mu>_e plane no longer appears when other structural parameters are considered and can be entirely attributed to the onset of "core" galaxies at B_T sim -20.5 mag. When "core" galaxies…
The starlight coming from the intergalactic space in galaxy clusters and groups witnesses the violent tidal interactions that galaxies experience in these dense environments. Such interactions may be (at least partly) responsible for the transformation of normal star-forming galaxies into passive dwarf ellipticals (dEs). In this contribution we present the first systematic study of the IntraCluster Light (ICL) for a statistically representative sample (Zibetti et al. 2005), which comprises 683 clusters selected between z=0.2 and 0.3 from ~1500 deg^2 in the SDSS. Their ICL is studied by stackin…
Results are presented of a deep optical survey of the Ursa Major Cluster, a spiral-rich cluster of galaxies at a distance of 18.6 Mpc which contains about 30% of the light but only 5% of the mass of the nearby Virgo Cluster. Fields around known cluster members and a pattern of blind fields along the major and minor axes of the cluster were studied with mosaic CCD cameras on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. The dynamical crossing time for the Ursa Major Cluster is only slightly less than a Hubble time. Most galaxies in the local Universe exist in similar moderate density environments. The Ur…
We present the first results of an ongoing spectroscopic survey of galaxies selected in the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV). The redshift distribution extends over 0<z<0.5 and a high fraction of the sources show intense nebular emission lines and UV-optical colours bluer than normal Hubble sequence galaxies. Although our sample is currently small, we derive a rest-frame UV luminosity function with a steep faint end slope consistent with that found for late-type galaxies in optical samples. However, the integrated luminosity density derived implies a volume-averaged star formation rate higher than …
The group of lambda Bootis type stars comprises late B- to early F-type, Population I objects which are basically metal weak, in particular the Fe group elements, but with the clear exception of C, N, O and S. The present work is a continuation of the studies by Paunzen et al. (1998, A&A, 335, 533), who presented first results on the pulsational characteristics of the lambda Bootis stars. Since then, we have observed 22 additional objects; we found eight new pulsators and confirmed another one. Furthermore, new spectroscopic data (Paunzen, 2001, A&A, 373, 633) allowed us to sort out misidentif…
We report on our observing program to obtain integrated spectrophotometry, intermediate and high resolution major axis spectra, and U,B,R surface photo- metry of a representative sample of ~200 galaxies in the nearby field. The main goal of this program is to provide a comparison sample for high redshift studies and to study the variation in star formation rates (SFR), star forma- tion history (SFH), excitation, metallicity, and internal kinematics over a large range in galaxy luminosity and morphological type. In particular, we extend the work of Kennicutt (1992) to lower luminosity systems. …
We present a study of 15 long-duration gamma-ray burst (GRB) host galaxies at z>2. The GRBs are selected with available early-time afterglow spectra in order to compare interstellar medium (ISM) absorption-line properties with stellar properties of the host galaxies. In addition to five previously studied hosts, we consider new detections for the host galaxies of GRB050820 and GRB060206 and place 2-sigma upper limits to the luminosities of the remaining unidentified hosts. We examine the nature of the host galaxy population and find that (1) the UV luminosity distribution of GRB host galaxies …
We present results from a decimetric radio survey undertaken with the Very Large Array as part of a longer term goal to inter-compare star formation and dust extinction diagnostics, on a galaxy by galaxy basis, for a representative sample of nearby galaxies. For our survey field, Selected Area 57, star formation rates derived from 1.4GHz luminosities are compared with earlier nebular emission line and ultraviolet (UV) continuum diagnostics. We find broad correlations, over several decades in luminosity, between H-alpha, the UV continuum and 1.4GHz diagnostics. However, the scatter in these rel…
The number of damped Ly-alpha absorbers (DLAs) currently known is about 100, but our knowledge of their sizes and morphologies is still very sparse as very few have been detected in emission. Here we present narrow-band and broad-band observations of a DLA in the field of the quasar pair Q0151+048A (qA) and Q0151+048B (qB). These two quasars have very similar redshifts z_em = 1.922, 1.937, respectively, and an angular separation of 3.27 arcsec. The spectrum of qA contains a DLA at z_abs = 1.9342 (close to the emission redshift) which shows an emission line in the trough, detected at 4 sigma. O…
We present a new evolutionary model for the far-UV to sub-mm properties of the galaxy population. This combines a semi-analytic galaxy formation model based on hierarchical clustering (GALFORM) with a spectro-photometric code which includes dust reprocessing (GRASIL). The former provides the star formation and metal enrichment histories, together with the gas mass and various geometrical parameters, for a representative sample of galaxies formed in different density environments. These quantities allow us to model the SEDs of galaxies, taking into account stellar emission and also dust extinct…
We use N-body simulations to investigate the structure of dark halos in the standard Cold Dark Matter cosmogony. Halos are excised from simulations of cosmologically representative regions and are resimulated individually at high resolution. We study objects with masses ranging from those of dwarf galaxy halos to those of rich galaxy clusters. The spherically averaged density profiles of all our halos can be fit over two decades in radius by scaling a simple ``universal'' profile. The characteristic overdensity of a halo, or equivalently its concentration, correlates strongly with halo mass in…
We present an analysis of the star formation properties of field galaxies within the local volume out to a recession velocity limit of 3000 km/s. A parent sample of 863 star-forming galaxies is used to calculate a B-band luminosity function. This is then populated with star formation information from a subsample of 327 galaxies, for which we have H alpha imaging, firstly by calibrating a relationship between galaxy B-band luminosity and star formation rate, and secondly by a Monte Carlo simulation of a representative sample of galaxies, in which star formation information is randomly sampled f…
We have performed a multiparametric analysis of luminosity data for a sample of 234 normal spiral and irregular galaxies observed in X-rays with the {\it Einstein Observatory}. This sample is representative of S and Irr galaxies, with a good coverage of morphological types and absolute magnitudes. In addition to X-ray and optical da ta, we have compiled H-band magnitudes, IRAS near- and far-infrared, and 6cm radio co ntinuum observations for the sample from the literature. We have also performed a carefu l compilation of distance estimates. We have explored the effect of morphology by dividing…
We analyze spectral properties of 1671 galaxies from the Stromlo-APM survey, selected to have 15 < b_J < 17.15 and having a mean redshift z = 0.05. This is a representative local sample of field galaxies, so the global properties of the galaxy population provide a comparative point for analysis of more distant surveys. We measure Halpha, Oii 3727, Sii 6716, 6731, Nii 6583 and Oi 6300 equivalent widths and the D_4000 break index. The 5A resolution spectra use an 8 arcsec slit, which typically covers 40-50% of the galaxy area. We find no evidence for systematic trends depending on the fraction o…
