We describe interacting mixtures of ultracold bosonic and fermionic atoms in harmonically confined optical lattices. For a suitable choice of parameters we study the emergence of superfluid and Fermi liquid (non-insulating) regions out of Bose-Mott and Fermi-band insulators, due to finite Boson and Fermion hopping. We obtain the shell structure for the system and show that angular momentum can be transferred to the non-insulating regions from Laguerre-Gaussian beams, which combined with Bragg spectroscopy can reveal all superfluid and Fermi liquid shells.
In this paper we derive the dispersion relation of the surface waves at the interfaces between Mott insulating and Superfluid phases for confined Bose-Einstein Condensates. We then calculate their contribution to the heat capacity of the system and show how its low temperature scaling allows an experimental test of the existence and properties of Mott Insulator-Superfluid domains.
The superfluid fraction of ideal and interacting inhomogeneous Bose gases with varying asymmetry is investigated at finite temperature using well-known properties of the harmonic oscillator as well as the essentially exact microscopic path integral Monte Carlo method. We find that the superfluid fraction (i) is essentially independent of the interaction strength for all temperatures considered, (ii) changes profoundly as the effective dimensionality is varied from three- to one-dimensional, (iii) is approximately equal to the condensate fraction N0/N for spherical Bose gases, and (iv) deviates…
We investigate the zero-temperature properties of a superfluid Bose-Fermi mixture by introducing a set of coupled Galilei-invariant nonlinear Schrödinger equations valid from weak-coupling to unitarity. The Bose dynamics is described by a Gross-Pitaevskii-type equation including beyond-mean-field corrections possessing the correct weak-coupling and unitarity limits. The dynamics of the two-component Fermi superfluid is described by a density-functional equation including beyond-mean-field terms with correct weak-coupling and unitarity limits. The present set of equations is equivalent to the e…
We investigate a strongly-correlated Bose gas in an optical lattice. Extending the standard-basis operator method developed by Haley and Erdos to a boson Hubbard model, we calculate excitation spectra in the superfluid phase, as well as in the Mott insulating phase, at T=0. In the Mott phase, the excitation spectrum has a finite energy gap, reflecting the localized character of atoms. In the superfluid phase, the excitation spectrum is shown to have an itinerant-localized dual structure, where the gapless Bogoliubov mode (which describes the itinerant character of superfluid atoms) and a band …
We use a dissipative Gross-Petaevskii equation derived from the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian to study the effect of the thermal component on the stability of a current-carrying superfluid state of a Bose gas in an optical lattice potential. We explicitly show that the superfluid state becomes unstable at certain quasi-momentum of the condensate due to a thermal component which is locked by an optical lattice potential. It is shown that this instability coincides with the Landau instability derived from the GP equation.
This article reviews recent developments in quantum fluid dynamics and quantum turbulence (QT) for superfluid helium and atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. Quantum turbulence was discovered in superfluid $^4$He in the 1950s, but the field moved in a new direction starting around the mid 1990s. Quantum turbulence is comprised of quantized vortices that are definite topological defects arising from the order parameter appearing in Bose-Einstein condensation. Hence QT is expected to yield a simpler model of turbulence than does conventional turbulence. A general introduction to this issue and a br…
We consider the motion of a quasi one dimensional beam of Bose-Einstein condensed particles in a disordered region of finite extent. Interaction effects lead to the appearance of two distinct regions of stationary flow. One is subsonic and corresponds to superfluid motion. The other one is supersonic, dissipative and shows Anderson localization. We compute analytically the interaction-dependent localization length. We also explain the disappearance of the supersonic stationary flow for large disordered samples.
We present experimental results on a Bose gas in a quasi-2D geometry near the Berezinskii, Kosterlitz and Thouless (BKT) transition temperature. By measuring the density profile, \textit{in situ} and after time of flight, and the coherence length, we identify different states of the gas. In particular, we observe that the gas develops a bimodal distribution without long range order. In this state, the gas presents a longer coherence length than the thermal cloud; it is quasi-condensed but is not superfluid. Experimental evidence indicates that we observe the superfluid transition (BKT transiti…
In the strong-coupling BEC region where a Feshbach resonance gives rise to tightly-bound dimer molecules, we show that a spin-polarized Fermi superfluid reduces to a simple Bose-Fermi mixture of Bose-condensed dimers and the leftover unpaired fermions. Using a many-body functional integral formalism, the Gaussian fluctuations give rise to an induced dimer-dimer interaction mediated by the unpaired fermions, with the dimer-fermion vertex being given by the (mean-field) Born approximation. Treating the pairing fluctuations to quartic order, we show how the action for a spin-polarized Fermi super…
Bragg spectroscopy is used to measure excitations of a trapped, quantum-degenerate gas of 87Rb atoms in a 3-dimensional optical lattice. The measurements are carried out over a range of optical lattice depths in the superfluid phase of the Bose-Hubbard model. For fixed wavevector, the resonant frequency of the excitation is found to decrease with increasing lattice depth. A numerical calculation of the resonant frequencies based on Bogoliubov theory shows a less steep rate of decrease than the measurements.
We introduce a quasi-analytic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with beyond mean-field corrections to describe the dynamics of a zero-temperature dilute superfluid Fermi gas in the crossover from the weak-coupling Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) regime, where $k_F|a| \ll 1$ with $a$ the s-wave scattering length and $k_F$ the Fermi momentum, through the unitarity limit, $k_Fa \to \pm \infty$, to the Bose regime where $k_Fa >0$. The energy of our model is parametrized using the known asymptotic behavior in the BCS, Bose, and the unitarity limits and is in excellent agreement with accurate Green fun…
Starting from an effective action for the order parameter field, we derive a coupled set of generalized hydrodynamic equations for a Bose condensate in an optical lattice at finite temperatures. Using the linearized hydrodynamic equations, we study the microscopic mechanism of the Landau instability due to the collisional damping process between condensate and noncondensate atoms. It is shown that the Landau criterion of the superfluidity for the uniform system is modified due to the presence of the periodic optical lattice potential.
We report the Bragg spectroscopy of interacting one-dimensional Bose gases loaded in optical lattices across the superfluid to Mott-insulator phase transition. Elementary excitations are created with a non-zero momentum and the response of the correlated 1D gases is in the linear regime. The complexity of the strongly correlated quantum phases is directly displayed in the spectra which exhibit novel features. This work paves the way for a precise characterization of the state of correlated atomic phases in optical lattices.
The possibility of Bose-Einstein condensation of excitations has been discussed for a long time. The phenomenon of the phase-coherent precession of magnetization in superfluid 3He and the related effects of spin superfluidity are based on the true Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons. Several different states of coherent precession has been observed in 3He-B: homogeneously precessing domain (HPD); persistent signal formed by Q-balls at very low temperatures; coherent precession with fractional magnetization; and two new modes of the coherent precession in compressed aerogel. In compressed aer…
In a one-dimensional shallow optical lattice, in the presence of both cubic and quintic nonlinearity, a superfluid density wave is identified in a Bose-Einstein condensate. Interestingly, it ceases to exist when only one of these interactions is operative. We predict the loss of superfluidity through a classical dynamical phase transition, where modulational instability leads to the loss of phase coherence. In a certain parameter domain, the competition between lattice potential and the interactions is shown to give rise to a stripe phase, where atoms are confined in finite domains. In a pure …
We consider the Josephson effect when two independent Bose superfluids are weakly connected. In the presence of interparticle interaction and based on the calculations of the one-particle density matrix of the whole system, we find that the one-particle density matrix can be factorized which satisfies the general criterion of Bose superfluid proposed by Penrose and Onsager. By introducing an effective order parameter for the whole system, our researches show that there is Josephson effect for two independent Bose superfluids.
We discuss the zero-temperature hydrodynamics equations of bosonic and fermionic superfluids and their connection with generalized Gross-Pitaevskii and Ginzburg-Landau equations through a single superfluid nonlinear Schrodinger equation.
The quantum phase transition point between the insulator and the superfluid phase at unit filling factor of the infinite one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model is numerically computed with a high accuracy, better than current state of the art calculations. The method uses the infinite system version of the time evolving block decimation algorithm, here tested in a challenging case.
We study the transition to fermion pair superfluidity in a mixture of interacting bosonic and fermionic atoms. The fermion interaction induced by the bosons and the dynamical screening of the condensate phonons due to fermions are included using the nonperturbative Hamiltonian flow equations. We determine the bosonic spectrum near the transition towards phase separation and find that the superfluid transition temperature may be increased substantially due to phonon damping.
We predict the loss of superfluidity in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped in a combined optical and axially-symmetric harmonic potentials during a resonant collective excitation initiated by a periodic modulation of the atomic scattering length $a$, when the modulation frequency equals twice the radial trapping frequency or multiples thereof. This classical dynamical transition is marked by a loss of superfluidity in the BEC and a subsequent destruction of the interference pattern upon free expansion. Suggestion for future experiment is made.
We study ground-state phase diagrams and excitation spectra of Bose-Bose mixtures in an optical lattice by applying the Gutzwiller approximation to the two-component Bose-Hubbard model. A case of equal hoppings and equal intra-component interactions for both components is considered. Due to the existence of inter-component interaction, there appear several quantum phases, such as the superfluid, paired superfluid, and counterflow superfluid phases. We find that the transition from superfluid (SF) to Mott insulator (MI) with even filling factors can be of the first order for a wide range of the…
We show that a degenerate gas of two-species bosonic atoms interacting through a p-wave Feshbach resonance (as realized in, e.g., a 85Rb-87Rb mixture) exhibits a finite-momentum atomic-molecular superfluid (AMSF), sandwiched by a molecular p-wave (orbital spinor) superfluid and by an s-wave atomic superfluid at large negative and positive detunings, respectively. The magnetic field can be used to tune the modulation wave vector of the AMSF state, as well as to drive quantum phase transitions in this rich system.
We study a degenerate two-species gas of bosonic atoms interacting through a p-wave Feshbach resonance as for example realized in a Rb85-Rb87 mixture. We show that in addition to a conventional atomic and a p-wave molecular spinor-1 superfluidity at large positive and negative detunings, respectively, the system generically exhibits a finite momentum atomic-molecular superfluidity at intermediate detuning around the unitary point. We analyze the detailed nature of the corresponding phases and the associated quantum and thermal phase transitions.
We analyze the possibility of a ferroelectric transition in heteronuclear molecules consisting of Bose-Bose, Bose-Fermi or Fermi-Fermi atom pairs. This transition is characterized by the appearance of a spontaneous electric polarization below a critical temperature. We discuss the existence of a ferroelectric Fermi liquid phase for Fermi molecules and the existence of a ferroelectric superfluid phase for Bose molecules characterized by the coexistence of ferroelectric and superfluid orders. Lastly, we propose an experiment to detect ferroelectric correlations through the observation of coheren…
We develop a strong-coupling theory for the superfluidity of fermion pairing phase in a Bose-Fermi mixture. Dynamical screening, self-energy renormalization, and a pairing gap function are included self-consistently within the adiabatic limit (i.e., the phonon velocity is much smaller than the Fermi velocity). An analytical solution for the transition temperature (Tc) is derived within reasonable approximations. Using typical parameters of a 40K-87Rb mixture, we find that the calculated Tc is several times larger than that obtained in the weak coupling theory, and can be up to several percents…
With use of the U(1) quantum rotor method in the path integral effective action formulation, we have confirmed the mathematical similarity of the phase Hamiltonian and of the extended Bose-Hubbard model with density-induced tunneling (DIT). Moreover, we have shown that the latter model can be mapped to a pseudospin Hamiltonian that exhibits two coexisting (single-particle and pair) superfluid phases. Phase separation of the two has also been confirmed, determining that there exists a range of coefficients in which only pair condensation, and not single-particle superfluidity, is present. The D…
We prove the absence of a direct quantum phase transition between a superfluid and a Mott insulator in a bosonic system with generic, bounded disorder. We also prove compressibility of the system on the superfluid--insulator critical line and in its neighborhood. These conclusions follow from a general {\it theorem of inclusions} which states that for any transition in a disordered system one can always find rare regions of the competing phase on either side of the transition line. Quantum Monte Carlo simulations for the disordered Bose-Hubbard model show an even stronger result, important for…
We study the dynamics of phase transitions in the one dimensional Bose-Hubbard model. To drive the system from Mott insulator to superfluid phase, we change the tunneling frequency at a finite rate. We investigate the build up of correlations during fast and slow transitions using variational wave functions, dynamical Bogoliubov theory, Kibble-Zurek mechanism, and numerical simulations. We show that time-dependent correlations satisfy characteristic scaling relations that can be measured in optical lattices filled with cold atoms.
