The Lagoon Nebula is an HII region in the Sagittarius Arm, about 1.3 kpc away, associated with the young (1-3 Myr) open cluster NGC 6530, which contains several O stars and several dozen B stars. Lower-mass cluster members, detected by X-ray and H-alpha emission, and by near-IR excess, number more than a thousand. Myr-old star formation is traced by the optically-visible HII region and cluster; observations of infrared and submillimetre-wave emission, and of optical emission features, indicate ongoing star formation in several locations across the Lagoon. The most prominent of these are the Hourglass Nebula and M8E. Submillimetre-wave observations also reveal many clumps of dense molecular gas, which may form the next generation of stars. The complex structure of the region has been shaped by the interaction of the underlying molecular gas with multiple massive stars and episodes of star formation. NGC 6530 is the oldest component, with the newest stars found embedded in the molecular gas behind the cluster and at its southern rim. A degree to the east of the Lagoon, Simeis 188 is a complex of emission and reflection nebulae, including the bright-rimmed cloud NGC 6559; the presence of H-alpha emission stars suggests ongoing star formation.
We report the discovery of new pre-main sequence (PMS) stars in the Lagoon Nebula (M8) at a distance of 1.25 kpc, based on intermediate resolution spectra obtained with the Boller & Chivens spectrograph at the 6.5-m Magellan I telescope (Las Campanas Observatory, Chile). According to the spectral types, the presence of emission lines and the lithium 6708A absorption line, we are able to identify 27 classical T Tauri stars, 7 weak-lined T Tauri stars and 3 PMS emission objects with spectral type G, which we include in a separated stellar class denominated "PMS Fe/Ge class". Using near-infrared …
Aims: We search for direct evidence of ongoing star formation by accretion in the Lagoon Nebula (M8), using optical wide-field narrow-band imaging obtained at La Silla Observatory. Methods: We examine [SII] and Halpha images for line-emission features that could be interpreted as signatures of outflow activity of the exciting sources. Results: We discover five new Herbig-Haro objects, study in detail their morphology and attempt to identify their potential driving sources among the population of T Tauri stars and embedded sources in the surroundings. Conclusions: The results reported here conc…
The results of a numerical study of the growth of solid particles, ranging from 1 micron to 1 millimeter in size, in the vicinity of an azimuthally symmetric density enhancement of a protostellar disk are presented. It is shown that the combined effect of gas drag and pressure gradients, which causes solid objects to rapidly migrate toward the location of the local maximum density, can also enhance the rate of growth of dust particles to larger objects. The results of numerical simulations of such growth processes are presented and the effects of the changes of the physical properties of parti…
We present an ASCA discovery of diffuse hard X-ray emission from the Sgr C complex with its peak in the vicinity of the molecular cloud core. The X-ray spectrum is characterized by a strong 6.4-keV line and large absorption. These properties suggest that Sgr C is a new X-ray reflection nebula which emits fluorescent and scattered X-rays via irradiation from an external X-ray source. We found no adequately bright source in the immediate Sgr C vicinity to fully account for the fluorescence. The irradiating source may be the Galactic nucleus Sgr A*, which was brighter in the past than it is now a…
A summary of the results of a numerical study of the growth of solid particles in the vicinity of an azimuthally symmetric density enhancement of a protostellar disk are presented. The effects of gas drag and pressure gradients on the rate of growth of dust particles and their settling on the midplane of the nebula are also discussed.
The Trifid nebula is a young HII region undergoing a burst of star formation. In this article, we report on far-infrared and millimeter continuum and line observations of several massive and bright protostellar sources in the vicinity of the exciting star fo the nebula, just behind the ionization front. These objects are probably young protostars (Class 0) and are associated with very massive cores (M ~ 8-90 Msol) powering young energetic outflows. Analysis of the far-infrared emission in the 45-200 micron range from ISO/LWS data shows that they are embedded in cold dense material. Inspection …
It is generally believed that pulsars dissipate their rotational energy through powerful winds of relativistic particles. Confinement of these winds leads to the formation of luminous pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) seen across the electromagnetic spectrum in synchrotron and inverse Compton emission. Recently, many new detections have been produced at the highest energies by Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray observations identifying PWNe as among the most common sources of galactic VHE gamma -ray emission. We report here on the preliminary results of a search for VHE gamma-ray emission towards a sel…
We study the motions of small solids, ranging from micron-sized dust grains to 100-m objects, in the vicinity of a local density enhancement of an isothermal gaseous solar nebula. Being interested in possible application of the results to the formation of clumps and spiral arms in a circumstellar disk, we numerically integrate the equations of motion of such solids and study their migration for different values of their sizes and masses and also for different physical properties of the gas, such as its density and temperature. We show that, considering the drag force of the gas and also the gr…
We have detected CO+ toward the photon-dominated region (PDR) associated with the reflection nebula NGC 7023. This is the first detection of CO+ in the vicinity of a Be star. A CO+ column density of ~ 3E11 cm-2 has been derived toward the PDR peak. We have, however, not detected CO+ in a well shielded clump of the adjacent molecular cloud, where the CO+/HCO+ abundance ratio is at least 100 times lower than in the PDR. Our results show, for the first time, that CO^+ column densities as large as ~ 3E11 cm-2 can be produced in regions with incident UV fields of just a few 1E3 (in units of Habing …
We present multi-epoch, diffraction-limited images of the nebula around the carbon star CIT 6 at 2.2 microns and 3.1 microns from aperture masking on the Keck-I telescope. The near-IR nebula is resolved into two main components, an elongated, bright feature showing time-variable asymmetry and a fainter component about 60 milliarcseconds away with a cooler color temperature. These images were precisely registered (~35 milliarcseconds) with respect to recent visible images from the Hubble Space Telescope (Trammell et al. 2000), which showed a bipolar structure in scattered light. The dominant ne…
We propose that the pulsar nebula associated with the pulsar J2229+6114 and the supernova remnant (SNR) G106.3+2.7 are the result of the same supernova explosion. The whole structure is located at the edge of an HI bubble with extended regions of molecular gas inside. The radial velocities of both the atomic hydrogen and the molecular material suggest a distance of 800 pc. At this distance the SNR is 14 pc long and 6 pc wide. Apparently the bubble was created by the stellar wind and supernova explosions of a group of stars in its center which also triggered the formation of the progenitor star…
We present high angular resolution observations of the HC$_3$N J=5--4 line from the Egg nebula, which is the archetype of protoplanetary nebulae. We find that the HC$_{\rm 3}$N emission in the approaching and receding portion of the envelope traces a clumpy hollow shell, similar to that seen in normal carbon rich envelopes. Near the systemic velocity, the hollow shell is fragmented into several large blobs or arcs with missing portions correspond spatially to locations of previously reported high--velocity outlows in the Egg nebula. This provides direct evidence for the disruption of the slowl…
We have detected an ionized nebula around the hot DO white dwarf KPD 0005+5106, and used the [OIII]/H-alpha ratios and nebular velocities to separate this nebula from the background HII region of AO Cas. The angular size of the [OIII] nebula of KPD 0005+5106 is ~3 deg. The velocity of this nebula is similar to those of the local interstellar HI gas and the interstellar/circumstellar absorption lines in UV spectra of KPD 0005+5106, but has a large offset from those of the stellar photospheric lines. The mass of the ionized nebula, ~70 Msun, indicates that it consists of interstellar material an…
The H.E.S.S. experiment, an array of four Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes with high sensitivity and large field-of-view, has been used to search for emitters of very-high-energy (VHE, >100 GeV) gamma-rays along the Galactic plane, covering the region 30 deg < l < 60 deg, 280 deg < l < 330 deg, and -3 deg < b < 3 deg. In this continuation of the H.E.S.S. Galactic Plane Scan, a new extended VHE gamma-ray source was discovered at alpha(2000)=19h12m49s, delta(2000)=+10d09'06'' (HESS J1912+101). Its integral flux between 1-10 TeV is ~10% of the Crab Nebula flux in the same energy range. Th…
IC 2144 is a small reflection nebula located in the zone of avoidance near the Galactic anticenter. It has been investigated here largely on the basis of Keck/HIRES optical spectroscopy (R ~ 48,000) and a SpeX spectrogram in the near-IR (R = 2000) obtained at the NASA IRTF. The only star in the nebula that is obvious in the optical or near-IR is the peculiar emission-line object MWC 778 (V = 12.8), which resembles a T Tauri star in some respects. What appear to be F- or G-type absorption features are detectable in its optical region under the very complex emission line spectrum; their radial v…
We study relatively isolated massive WN-type stars in the Galactic center. The K-band spectra of WR102ka and WR102c are exploited to infer the stellar parameters and to compute synthetic stellar spectra using the Potsdam Wolf-Rayet (PoWR) model atmosphere code. These models are combined with dust-shell models for analyzing the Spitzer IRS spectra of these objects. Archival IR images complement the interpretation. We report that WR102ka and WR102c are among the most luminous stars in the Milky Way. The mid-IR continua for both objects are dominated by dust emission. For the first time we report…
The Orion Nebula Cluster and the molecular cloud in its vicinity have been observed with the ACIS-I detector on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory with 23 hours exposure. We detect 1075 X-ray sources: 91% are spatially associated with known stellar members of the cluster, and 7% are newly identified deeply embedded cloud members. This provides the largest X-ray study of a pre-main sequence stellar population. We examine here the X-ray properties of Orion young stars as a function of mass. Results include: (a) the discovery of rapid variability in the O9.5 31 M_o star θ^2A Ori, and several ear…
Multiple optical outflows are known to exist in the vicinity of the active star formation region called Orion-South (Orion-S). We have mapped the velocity of low ionization features in the brightest part of the Orion Nebula, including Orion-S, and imaged the entire nebula with the Hubble Space Telescope. These new data, combined with recent high resolution radio maps of outflows from the Orion-S region, allow us to trace the origin of the optical outflows. It is confirmed that HH 625 arises from the blueshifted lobe of the CO outflow from 136-359 in Orion-S while it is likely that HH 507 arise…
We present lunar occultation observations obtained in August 2006 with the recently demonstrated burst mode of the ISAAC instrument at the ESO VLT. The results presented here follow the previously reported observations carried out in March 2006 on a similar but unrelated set of sources. Interstellar extinction in the inner regions of the galactic bulge amounts to tens of magnitudes at visual wavelengths. As a consequence, the majority of sources in that area are poorly studied and large numbers of potentially interesting sources such as late-type giants with circumstellar shells, stellar maser…
Combining the relative vicinity of the Local Group spiral galaxy M33 with the Spitzer images, we investigate the properties of infrared (IR) emission sites and assess the reliability of the IR emission as a star formation tracer. We compared the photometric results for several samples of three known types of discrete sources (HII regions, supernovae remnants and planetary nebulae) with theoretical diagnostic diagrams, and derived the spectral energy distribution (from 3.6 to 24 microns) of each type of object. Moreover, we generated a catalogue of 24 microns sources and inferred their nature f…
Combining the relative vicinity of the Local Group spiral galaxy M33 with the Spitzer images, we investigate the properties of infrared (IR) emission sites and assess the reliability of the IR emission as a star formation tracer. The mid- and far-IR emission of M33 was obtained from IRAC and MIPS images from the Spitzer archive. We compared the photometric results for several samples of three known types of discrete sources (HII regions, supernovae remnants and planetary nebulae) with theoretical diagnostic diagrams, and derived the spectral energy distribution (from 3.6 to 24 micron) of each …
(Abridged) The open cluster NGC 1893, illuminating the HII region IC410, contains a moderately large population of O-type stars and is one of the youngest clusters observable in the optical range. We have probed the stellar population of NGC 1893 in an attempt to determine its size and extent. We classify a large sample of cluster members with new intermediate resolution spectroscopy. We use H-alpha slitless spectroscopy of the field to search for emission line objects, identifying 18 emission-line PMS stars. We then combine existing optical photometry with 2MASS JHKs photometry to detect star…
We present a study of the X-ray sources detected in the vicinity of two density peaks in the Orion Molecular Cloud 1 (OMC-1) behind the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC), as seen in the exceptionally deep (~10 days) exposure of the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Project (COUP). We focus on a 40"*50" region around the Becklin-Neugebauer object and Kleinmann-Low nebula (collectively BN-KL) and a 60"*75" region around OMC-1S, a secondary star-forming peak some 90" south of BN-KL. Forty-three and sixty X-ray sources were detected in BN-KL and OMC-1S, respectively, of which half and one-third, respectively, were…
We present 7 mm, 1.3 cm and 3.6 cm continuum observations made with the Very Large Array toward a sample of ten luminous IRAS sources that are believed to be regions of massive star formation. We detect compact 7 mm emission in four of these objects: IRAS 18089-1732(1), IRAS 18182-1433, IRAS 18264-1152 and IRAS 18308-0841 and for the first time find that these IRAS sources are associated with double or triple radio sources separated by a few arcseconds. We discuss the characteristics of these sources based mostly on their spectral indices and find that their nature is diverse. Some features in…
Far-UV photons strongly affect the physical and chemical state of molecular gas in the vicinity of young massive stars. We have obtained maps of the HCO and H13CO+ ground state lines towards the Horsehead edge at 5'' angular resolution with a combination of IRAM PdBI and 30m observations. These maps have been complemented with IRAM-30m observations of several excited transitions at two different positions. Bright formyl radical emission delineates the illuminated edge of the nebula, with a faint emission remaining towards the shielded molecular core. Viewed from the illuminated star, the HCO e…
