This article presents a review of the most recent theoretical and experimental results in hydrogen. We particularly emphasize the methods used to deduce the Rydberg constant $R_\infty$ and we consider the prospects for future improvements in the precision of $R_\infty$.
The triatomic hydrogen ion (H$_3^+$) has spurred tremendous interest in astrophysics in recent decades, and Rydberg states of H$_3$ have also maintained an important role for understanding H$_3^+$ experiments. In a previous study [J. Chem. Phys. \textbf{133}, 234302 (2010)], radiative transitions between neutral H$_3$ Rydberg states were calculated at wavelengths near 7 microns, and could be compared with mid-infrared laser lines observed in hydrogen/rare gas discharges. The present study extends the investigation to wavelengths near 10 -- 13 microns. Rydberg states of D$_3$ are also treated.
Comparison of precision frequency measurements to quantum electrodynamics (QED) predictions for Rydberg states of hydrogen-like ions can yield information on values of fundamental constants and test theory. With the results of a calculation of a key QED contribution reported here, the uncertainty in the theory of the energy levels is reduced to a level where such a comparison can yield an improved value of the Rydberg constant.
We present a Rydberg hydrogen beamline developed to commission techniques of stimulated deexcitation for application in antihydrogen experiments at CERN's Antiproton Decelerator. The stimulation of spontaneous decay is a key technology to enhance the number of ground-state anti-atoms available in a beam toward precision spectroscopy and gravity measurements.
We investigate the Rydberg states generation of Hydrogen atoms with intense laser pulses, by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation and by means of classical trajectory monte-carlo simulations. Both linearly polarized multi-cycle pulses and pairs of optical half cycle pulses are used. Comparisons between these methods show that both the Coulomb force and initial lateral momentum, which have effects on the $n$-distribution and $l$-distribution of the population of excited states, are important in the generation of Rydberg states.
We report a theoretical scheme using a B-spline basis set to improve the poor computational accuracy of circular Rydberg states of hydrogen atoms in the intermediate magnetic field. This scheme can produce high accuracy energy levels and valid for an arbitrary magnetic field. Energy levels of hydrogen are presented for circular Rydberg states with azimuthal quantum numbers $|m|$ = 10 - 70 as a function of magnetic field strengths ranging from zero to 2.35 $\times$ 10$^9$ T. The variation of spatial distributions of electron probability densities with magnetic field strengths is discussed and c…
We demonstrated stochastic switching in a bistable system implemented with Rydberg atomic ensemble. The transition between the two states of the bistable system is driven by intensity noise of the laser beams. Rydberg atomic ensemble accumulates energy in an equilibrium situation and brings the nonlinear system across the threshold, where stochastic switching occurs between the two states. Measurement of Rydberg state's population by means of the ladder-type electromagnetically-induced transparency approaching relevant Rydberg state allows us to investigate the nonlinear behavior in Rydberg at…
We experimentally studied the Rydberg level shift caused by the electric field, which is generated by Rydberg atom collision induced ionization in a cesium atomic ensemble. The density of charged particles caused by collisions between Rydberg atoms is changed by controlling the ground-state atomic density and optical excitation process. We measured the Rydberg level shift using Rydberg electromagnetically-induced-transparency (EIT) spectroscopy, and interpreted the physical origin using a semi-classical model. The experimental results are in good agreement with the numerical simulation. These …
In excited molecules, the interaction between the covalent Rydberg and ion-pair channels forms a unique class of excited Rydberg states, in which the infinite manifold of vibrational levels are the equivalent of atomic Rydberg states with a heavy electron mass. Production of the ion pair states usually requires excitation through one or several interacting Rydberg states; these interacting channels are pathways for loss of flux, diminishing the rate of ion pair production. Here, we develop an analytical, asymptotic charge transfer model for the interaction between ultracold Rydberg molecular s…
Rydberg EIT-based microwave sensing has limited microwave-to-optical conversion bandwidth due to fundamental limitation in the optical pumping rate to its dark state. We demonstrate a parametric six-wave mixing of optical probe and coupling fields driving the atoms to a Rydberg state via two-photon excitation and two microwave fields with frequency offset of $δ$ driving the Rydberg-Rydberg transition in thermal atomic vapor. Microwave-to-optical conversion bandwidth of $17$ MHz is achieved in the present experiment which is limited by the available coupling power. Further theoretical investiga…
The phase noise of incident light fields can be converted into amplitude noise via absorption and dispersion effects in media under electromagnetically induced transparency. The conversion process is sensitive to two-photon detuning. This effect can be used to perform a novel type of Rydberg spectroscopy. We present experimental measurements of the phase noise spectrum (PNS) with Rydberg atoms in a cesium vapor cell. Furthermore, to explore microwave field measurements, a modulation-enhanced PNS approach is proposed.
A few-body approach relying on static line broadening theory is developed to treat the spectroscopy of a single Rydberg excitation to a trilobite-like state immersed in a high density ultracold medium. The present theoretical framework implements the compact treatment of polyatomic Rydberg molecules by Eiles et al. [arXiv:1601.06881], allowing for an accurate treatment of a large number of perturbers within the Rydberg orbit. This system exhibits two unique spectral signatures: its lineshape depends on the Rydberg quantum number $n$ but, strikingly, is independent of the density of the medium,…
Energy-conserving, angular momentum-changing collisions between protons and highly excited Rydberg hydrogen atoms are important for precise understanding of atomic recombination at the photon decoupling era, and the elemental abundance after primordial nucleosynthesis. Early approaches to $\ell$-changing collisions used perturbation theory for only dipole-allowed ($Δ\ell=\pm 1$) transitions. An exact non-perturbative quantum mechanical treatment is possible, but it comes at computational cost for highly excited Rydberg states. In this note we show how to obtain a semi-classical limit that is a…
We report the creation of ultralong-range Sr$_2$ molecules comprising one ground-state $5s^2$ $^1S_0$ atom and one atom in a $5sns$ $^3S_1$ Rydberg state for $n$ ranging from 29 to 36. Molecules are created in a trapped ultracold atomic gas using two-photon excitation near resonant with the $5s5p$ $^3P_1$ intermediate state, and their formation is detected through ground-state atom loss from the trap. The observed molecular binding energies are fit with the aid of first-order perturbation theory that utilizes a Fermi pseudopotential with effective $s$-wave and $p$-wave scattering lengths to de…
We experimentally investigate trap-loss spectra of the cesium 6S1/2(F=4)-71P3/2 Rydberg state by combining the cesium atomic magneto-optical trap with the narrow-linewidth, continuously-tunable 318.6 nm ultraviolet laser. That is, the atoms in the magneto-optical trap are excited to the Rydberg state due to the ultraviolet laser single-step Rydberg excitation, which leads to the reduction of atomic fluorescence. Based on the trap-loss spectroscopy technology, the Autler-Townes splitting due to strong cooling laser is observed, and the parameter dependence of the AT splitting interval of trap-l…
Stabilizing important physical quantities to atom-based standards lies at the heart of modern atomic, molecular and optical physics, and is widely applied to the field of precision metrology. Of particular importance is the atom-based microwave field amplitude stabilizer, the so-called atomic candle. Previous atomic candles are realized with atoms in their ground state, and hence suffer from the lack of frequency band tunability and small stabilization bandwidth, severely limiting their development and potential applications. To tackle these limitations, we employ microwave-dressed Rydberg ato…
The theoretical treatment of Rydberg states in one-electron ions is facilitated by the virtual absence of the nuclear-size correction, and fundamental constants like the Rydberg constant may be in the reach of planned high-precision spectroscopic experiments. The dominant nuclear effect that shifts transition energies among Rydberg states therefore is due to the nuclear mass. As a consequence, spectroscopic measurements of Rydberg transitions can be used in order to precisely deduce nuclear masses. A possible application of this approach to the hydrogen and deuterium, and hydrogen-like lithium…
We demonstrate the single-photon excitation spectra of cesium Rydberg atoms by means of a Doppler-free purely all-optical detection with a room-temperature vapor cell and a 319 nm ultra-violet (UV) laser. We excite atoms directly from 6S1/2 ground state to 71P3/2 Rydberg state with a narrow-linewidth 319 nm UV laser. The detection of Rydberg states is performed by monitoring the absorption of an 852 nm probe beam in a V-type three-level system. With a strong coupling light, we observe the Autler-Townes doublet and investigate experimentally the dependence of the separation and linewidth on the…
We investigate the Kerr and magneto-optical effects for a probe laser field with two orthogonally polarized components, propagating in a cold Rydberg atomic gas with an inverted-Y-type level configuration via double electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Through an approach beyond both mean-field and ground-state approximations, we make detailed calculations on third-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities and show that the system possesses giant nonlocal selfand cross-Kerr nonlinearities contributed by Rydberg-Rydberg interaction. The theoretical result of the cross-Kerr nonlinearit…

Neutral atoms have been observed to survive intense laser pulses in high Rydberg states with surprisingly large probability. Only with this Rydberg-state excitation (RSE) included is the picture of intense-laser-atom interaction complete. Various mechanisms have been proposed to explain the underlying physics. However, neither one can explain all the features observed in experiments and in time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE) simulations. Here we propose a fully quantum-mechanical model based on the strong-field approximation (SFA). It well reproduces the intensity dependence of RSE obta…
We investigate the optical Kerr nonlinearities of an ensemble of cold Rydberg atoms under the condition of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). By using an approach beyond mean-field theory, we show that the system possesses not only enhanced third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility, but also giant fifth-order nonlinear optical susceptibility, which has a cubic dependence on atomic density. Our results demonstrate that both the third-order and the fifth-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities consist of two parts, contributed respectively by photon-atom interaction and Rydberg-…
We study resonant optical excitations of strongly-interacting Rydberg states of atoms in the presence of relaxations. We employ the quantum stochastic (Monte Carlo) wavefunctions to simulate the dissipative dynamics of tens of atoms in two-dimensional lattices. We show that under typical experimental conditions involving slow Rydberg state decay and sizable relaxation of atomic coherences, on the time scale of several microseconds the atomic ensemble approaches a stationary state in which much of the quantum correlations between the atoms have decayed away. The steady state, however, exhibits …
The charge transfer (ionization) of hydrogen Rydberg atoms (principal quantum number $n=25-34$) incident at a Cu(100) surface is investigated. Unlike fully metallic surfaces, where the Rydberg electron energy is degenerate with the conduction band of the metal, the Cu(100) surface has a projected bandgap at these energies, and only discrete image states are available through which charge transfer can take place. Resonant enhancement of charge transfer is observed at hydrogen principal quantum numbers for which the Rydberg energy matches the energy of one of the image states. The integrated sur…
We carry out a complete derivation on nonrelativistic energies of atomic Rydberg states, including finite nuclear mass corrections. Several missing terms are found and a discrepancy is confirmed in the works of Drachman [in Long Range Casimir Forces: Theory and Recent Experiments on Atomic Systems, edited by F. S. Levin and D. A. Micha (Plenum, New York, 1993)] and Drake [Adv. At., Mol., Opt. Phys. 31, 1 (1993)]. As a benchmark, we present a detailed tabulation of different energy levels.
We investigated the Autler-Townes splitting produced by microwave transitions between atomic Rydberg states explored by optical spectroscopy from the ground electronic state. The laser-atom Hamiltonian describing the double irradiation of such a multilevel system is analysed on the basis of the Morris-Shore transformation. The application of this transformation to the microwave-dressed atomic system allows the identification of bright, dark, and spectator states associated with different configurations of atomic states and microwave polarisation. We derived synthetic spectra that show the main…
We study the impact of Rydberg molecule formation on the storage and retrieval of Rydberg polaritons in an ultracold atomic medium. We observe coherent revivals appearing in the retrieval efficiency of stored photons that originate from simultaneous excitation of Rydberg atoms and Rydberg molecules in the system with subsequent interference between the possible storage paths. We show that over a large range of principal quantum numbers the observed results can be described by a two-state model including only the atomic Rydberg state and the Rydberg dimer molecule state. At higher principal qua…
The combination of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) with the nonlinear interaction between Rydberg atoms provides an effective interaction between photons. In this paper, we investigate the storage of optical pulses as collective Rydberg atomic excitations in a cold atomic ensemble. By measuring the dynamics of the stored Rydberg polaritons, we experimentally demonstrate that storing a probe pulse as Rydberg polaritons strongly enhances the Rydberg mediated interaction compared to the slow propagation case. We show that the process is characterized by two time scales. At short st…
Squeezed many-body states of atoms are a valuable resource for high precision frequency metrology and could tremendously boost the performance of atomic lattice clocks. Here, we theoretically demonstrate a viable approach to spin squeezing in lattice clocks via optical dressing of one clock state to a highly excited Rydberg state, generating switchable atomic interactions. For realistic experimental parameters, this is shown to generate over 10 dB of squeezing in a few microseconds interaction time without affecting the subsequent clock interrogation.
Interaction between Rydberg atoms can significantly modify Rydberg excitation dynamics. Under a resonant driving field the Rydberg-Rydberg interaction in high-lying states can induce shifts in the atomic resonance such that a secondary Rydberg excitation becomes unlikely leading to the Rydberg blockade effect. In a related effect, off-resonant coupling of light to Rydberg states of atoms contributes to the Rydberg anti-blockade effect where the Rydberg interaction creates a resonant condition that promotes a secondary excitation in a Rydberg atomic gas. Here, we study the light-matter interact…
We review methods for coherently controlling Rydberg quantum states of atomic ensembles using Adiabatic Rapid Passage and Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Passage. These methods are commonly used for population inversion in simple two-level and three-level systems. We show that adiabatic techniques allow us to control population and phase dynamics of complex entangled states of mesoscopic atomic ensembles for quantum information processing with Rydberg atoms. We also propose several schemes of single-qubit and two-qubit gates based on adiabatic passage, Rydberg blockade and Förster resonances in Ryd…
We consider the role of high-lying Rydberg states of simple atomic systems such as $^1$H in setting constraints on physics beyond the Standard Model. We obtain highly accurate bound states energies for a hydrogen atom in the presence of an additional force carrier (the energy levels of the Hellmann potential). These results show that varying the size and shape of the Rydberg state by varying the quantum numbers provides a way to probe the range of new forces. By combining these results with the current state-of-the-art QED corrections, we determine a robust global constraint on new physics tha…
It has been argued that precise measurements of optical transition frequencies between Rydberg states of hydrogen-like ions could be used to obtain an improved value of the Rydberg constant and even to test Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) theory more accurately, by avoiding the uncertainties about the proton radius. Motivated by this perspective, we investigate the influence of the gravitational interaction on the energy levels of Hydrogen-like ions in Rydberg states within the context of the braneworld models. As it is known, in this scenario, the gravitational interaction is amplified in short…
We propose and analyze a scheme for realizing the quantum reflection of single photons in a cold Rydberg atomic gas via electromagnetically induced transparency, by which a deep and tunable attractive potential well can be prepared by using stored gate photons. Such a scheme is promising for designing dispersion-type single-photon switches, and may be taken as a quantum device for observing the wave and particle natures of photons simultaneously.
We show that optical spectroscopy of Rydberg states can provide accurate {\em in situ} thermometry at room-temperature. Transitions from a metastable state to Rydberg states with principal quantum numbers of 25 to 30 have 200 times larger fractional frequency sensitivities to blackbody radiation than the Strontium clock transition. We demonstrate that magic wavelength lattices exist for both Strontium and Ytterbium transitions between the metastable and Rydberg states. Frequency measurements of Rydberg transitions with $10^{-16}$ accuracy provide $10 \, \mathrm{mK}$ resolution and yield a blac…
We present and analyze a simple model to illustrate the possibility of Rydberg state control by means of a moving guided electron. Specifically, we consider alkali metal atoms whose valence electron is initially prepared in a Rydberg s-state and investigate state changes induced by the interaction with the nearby passing electron. We analyze the dependence of the atomic final state, obtained after the passage, on the electron's momentum. We identify experimentally accessible parameter regimes and discuss the experimental feasibility of the proposed scheme. We furthermore discuss the possibilit…
Thin metallic films have a 1D quantum well along the surface normal direction, which yields particle-in-a-box style electronic quantum states. However the quantum well is not infinitely deep and the wavefunctions of these states penetrate outside the surface where the electron is bound by its own image-charge attraction. Therefore a series of discrete, vacant states reach out from the thin film into the vacuum increasing the probability of electron transfer from an external atom or molecule to the thin film, especially for the resonant case where the quantum well energy matches that of the Ryd…
We report on the observation of Rabi oscillations to a Rydberg state on a timescale below one nanosecond in thermal rubidium vapor. We use a bandwidth-limited pulsed excitation and observe up to 6 full Rabi cycles within a pulse duration of ~ 4 ns. We find good agreement between the experiment and numerical simulations based on a surprisingly simple model. This result shows that fully coherent dynamics with Rydberg states can be achieved even in thermal atomic vapor thus suggesting small vapor cells as a platform for room temperature quantum devices. Furthermore the result implies that previou…
One of the most striking features of the strong interactions between Rydberg atoms is the dipole blockade effect, which allows only a single excitation to the Rydberg state within the volume of the blockade sphere. Here we present a method that spatially visualizes this phenomenon in an inhomogeneous gas of ultra-cold rubidium atoms. In our experiment we scan the position of one of the excitation lasers across the cold cloud and determine the number of Rydberg excitations detected as a function of position. Comparing this distribution to the one obtained for the number of ions created by a two…
We calculate interspecies Rydberg-Rydberg interaction strengths for the heavy alkalis Rb and Cs. The presence of strong Förster resonances makes interspecies coupling a promising approach for long range entanglement generation. We also provide an overview of the strongest Förster resonances for Rb-Rb and Cs-Cs using different principal quantum numbers for the two atoms. We show how interspecies coupling can be used for high fidelity quantum non demolition state measurements with low crosstalk in qubit arrays.
We investigate the indistinguishability of single photons retrieved from collective Rydberg excitations in cold atomic ensembles. The Rydberg spin waves are created either by off resonant two-photon excitation to the Rydberg state or by Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency. To assess the indistinguishability of the generated single photons, we perform Hong-Ou-Mandel experiments between the single photons and weak coherent states of light. We analyze the indistinguishability of the single photons as a function of the detection window and for photons generated by off-resonant excitat…
We present a quantum many-body description of the excitation spectrum of Rydberg polarons in a Bose gas. The many-body Hamiltonian is solved with functional determinant theory, and we extend this technique to describe Rydberg polarons of finite mass. Mean-field and classical descriptions of the spectrum are derived as approximations of the many-body theory. The various approaches are applied to experimental observations of polarons created by excitation of Rydberg atoms in a strontium Bose-Einstein condensate.
We demonstrate $|W\rangle$ state encoding of multi-atom ensemble qubits. Using optically trapped Rb atoms the $T_2$ coherence time is 2.6(3) ms for $\bar N=7.6$ atoms and scales approximately inversely with the number of atoms. Strong Rydberg blockade between two ensemble qubits is demonstrated with a fidelity of $0.89(1)$ and a fidelity of $\sim \hspace{-.05cm}1.0$ when postselected on control ensemble excitation. These results are a significant step towards deterministic entanglement of atomic ensembles.
We present a review of quantum computation with neutral atom qubits. After an overview of architectural options and approaches to preparing large qubit arrays we examine Rydberg mediated gate protocols and fidelity for two- and multi-qubit interactions. Quantum simulation and Rydberg dressing are alternatives to circuit based quantum computing for exploring many body quantum dynamics. We review the properties of the dressing interaction and provide a quantitative figure of merit for the complexity of the coherent dynamics that can be accessed with dressing. We conclude with a summary of the cu…
We propose a robust localization of the highly-excited Rydberg atoms, interacting with doughnut-shaped optical vortices. Compared with the earlier standing-wave (SW)-based localization methods, a vortex beam can provide an ultrahigh-precision two-dimensional localization solely in the zero-intensity center, within a confined excitation region down to the nanometer scale. We show that the presence of the Rydberg-Rydberg interaction permits counter-intuitively much stronger confinement towards a high spatial resolution when it is partially compensated by a suitable detuning. In addition, applyin…
We demonstrate a new approach for fast preparation, manipulation, and collective readout of an atomic Rydberg-state qubit. By making use of Rydberg blockade inside a small atomic ensemble, we prepare a single qubit within 3~$μ$s with a success probability of $F_p=0.93 \pm 0.02$, rotate it, and read out its state in $6$ $μs$ with a single-shot fidelity of $F_d=0.92 \pm 0.04$. The ensemble-assisted detection is $10^3$ times faster than imaging of a single atom with the same optical resolution, and enables fast repeated non-destructive measurement. We observe qubit coherence times of 15~$μ$s, muc…
The spectral properties of an interacting many-body system may display critical character and have potential applications in precision metrology. Here, we demonstrate such many-body enhanced metrology for microwave (MW) electric fields in a non-equilibrium Rydberg atomic gas. Near criticality the high sensitivity of Rydberg atoms to external MW electric fields, combined with many-body enhancement induces significant changes in the optical transmission. We quantify this behavior using the Fisher information. For continuous optical transmission at the critical point, the Fisher information is th…
We use coherent excitation of 3-16 atom ensembles to demonstrate collective Rabi flopping mediated by Rydberg blockade. Using calibrated atom number measurements, we quantitatively confirm the expected $\sqrt{N}$ Rabi frequency enhancement to within 4%. The resulting atom number distributions are consistent with essentially perfect blockade. We then use collective Rabi $π$ pulses to produce ${\cal N}=1,2$ atom number Fock states with fidelities of 62% and 48% respectively. The ${\cal N}=2$ Fock state shows the collective Rabi frequency enhancement without corruption from atom number fluctuatio…
