We introduce a modified detection method for measuring the luminosity of the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) by introducing the composite magnitude T = I - beta [(V-I)_o - 1.50], where beta is the slope of the tip magnitude as a function of color (or metallicity). The method is specifically designed to account for known systematics due to metallicity. In doing so, this simple transformation does away with arbitrary color selections in measuring the tip, and thereby significantly boosts the population of resolved stars that go into defining the TRGB distance. Moreover this method coincidentally reduces the impact of reddening on the true modulus as well as its final uncertainty.
I determine a distance to the Fornax dwarf galaxy using stars in the red clump and at the tip of the red giant branch. They are in very good agreement, with $μ_0 = 20.66 mag$. Comparing the magnitudes of the tip of the red giant branch and of the red clump in Fornax, Carina and the Magellanic Clouds, I propose a possible solution to the problem of the discrepancy between these two types of distance measurements.
I review the latest results on the calibration of the Tip of the Red Giant Branch as a standard candle, in the optical and in the near infrared. The agreement among different and independent empirical calibrations is rather good, if all the uncertainties are taken into account. The possible extension of the calibration to SDSS photometric bands (i,z) is also discussed.
We derived the distance to the central region of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy from the Red Giant Branch Tip. The obtained distance modulus is $(m-M)_0=17.10\pm0.15$, corresponding to a heliocentric distance $D=26.30\pm1.8$ Kpc. This estimate is in good agreement with the distance obtained from RR Lyrae stars of the globular cluster M~54, located in the core of the Sgr galaxy, once the most accurate estimate of the cluster metallicity and the most recent calibration of the $M_V(RRLy) vs.[Fe/H]$ relation are adopted.
We present new empirical calibrations of the Red Giant Branch (RGB) Bump and Tip based on a homogeneous near-Infrared database of 24 Galactic Globular Clusters. The luminosities of the RGB Bump and Tip in the J, H and K bands and their dependence on the cluster metallicity have been studied, yielding empirical relationships. By using recent transformations between the observational and theoretical planes, we also derived similar calibrations in terms of bolometric luminosity. We present V and I photometry of a 9.4 arcmin X 9.4 arcmin field centered on the dwarf spheroidal galaxy Leo I. The I magnitude of the tip of the Red Giant Branch is robustly estimated from two different datasets (I^{TRGB}=17.97 +0.05/-0.03). From this estimate, adopting [M/H]=-1.2 from the comparison of RGB stars with Galactic templates, we obtain a distance modulus (m-M)_0=22.02 +/- 0.13, corresponding to a distance D=254 +16/-19 Kpc.
We present the sample for an abundance analysis of 25 members of M71 with luminosities ranging from the red giant branch tip to the upper main sequence. The spectra are of high dispersion and of high precision. We describe the observing strategy and determine the stellar parameters for the sample stars using both broad band colors and fits of H$α$ profiles. The derived stellar parameters agree with those from the Yale$^2$ stellar evolutionary tracks to within 50 -- 100K for a fixed log g, which is within the level of the uncertainties.
We present observations with the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 of three fields centered on super-metal-rich globular clusters in the bulge of M31. Our (I,V-I) color-magnitude diagrams reach as faint as I ~ 26.5 mag and clearly reveal the magnitude of the first ascent red giant branch (RGB) tip. We find that the apparent I magnitude of the RGB tip does not become brighter near the center of M31 as concluded by previous investigators. Accurate distances to galaxies can be determined from the luminosities of stars at the Tip of the Red Giant Branch (TRGB). We use a Maximum Likelihood algorithm to locate the TRGB in galaxy color-magnitude diagrams. The algorithm is optimized by introducing reliable photometric errors and a completeness characterization determined with artificial star experiments. We have used the Advanced Camera for Surveys on board the Hubble Space Telescope to obtain deep photometry of the NGC 300 spiral galaxy in the Sculptor group. The results have been used to derive an accurate distance determination based on the Tip of the Red Giant Branch distance estimator. Both edge-detection and maximum likelihood methods have been applied, to derive a distance modulus (m-M)_0=26.30 +/- 0.03 +/- 0.12 for edge-detection, and (m-M)_0=26.36 +/- 0.02 +/- 0.12 for maximum likelihood. The first results of our ongoing near-infrared (NIR) survey of the variable red giants in the Large Magellanic Cloud, using the Infrared Survey Facility (IRSF) and the SIRIUS infrared camera, are presented. Many very red stars were detected and found that most of them are variables. In the observed colour-magnitude diagram ($J-K, K$) and the stellar $K$ magnitude distribution, the tip of the first giant branch (TRGB), where helium burning in the core starts, is clearly seen. We present period-luminosity relations for more than 23,000 red giants in the Large Magellanic Cloud observed by the OGLE-II microlensing project. The OGLE period values were combined with the 2MASS single-epoch JHK photometric data. For the brighter stars we find agreement with previous results (four different sequences corresponding to different modes of pulsation in AGB stars). We also discovered two distinct and well-separated sequences below the tip of the Red Giant Branch. They consist of almost 10,000 short-period (15 d <P< 50 d), low-amplitude (A_I<0.04 mag) red variable stars, for whi…
We have used WFPC2 VRI observations to calculate the distances to three nearby galaxies, NGC 4214, UGC 685, and UGC 5456 using the tip of the red giant branch method. Our values for NGC 4214 (2.94 +/- 0.18 Mpc) and UGC 685 (4.79 +/- 0.30 Mpc) are the most precise measurementes of the distances to these objects ever made. For UGC 5456 the data do not allow us to reach a decisive conclusion since there are two possible solutions, one leading towards a short distance around 3.8 Mpc and another one towards a long distance of 5.6 Mpc or more.

We have used HST-WFPC2 multiband observations of a field around SN 1987A in the Large Magellanic Cloud to measure its distance from the Sun. The observations allowed us to carefully determine the interstellar extinction along the line of sight to a large number of stars and to measure the LMC distance by using two stellar distance indicators: the Red Clump and the Tip of the Red Giant Branch. The extragalactic distance scale relies heavily on Cepheids. However, it has become clear from observations and pulsation models that the slope and zero point of their P-L relations differ from galaxy to galaxy. This makes the determination of Cepheid distances complex and calls for an independent test of their differences. When theoretical cumulative luminosity functions are shifted to align the tip in I-band and normalized at a luminosity level slightly brighter than the red giant bump, virtually all dependence on age and composition (heavy elements and helium abundance) is eliminated. Distances of galaxies in the Hubble Space Telescope Key Project are based on the Cepheid period-luminosity relation. An alternative basis is the tip of the red giant branch. Using archival HST data, we calibrate the infrared Tully-Fisher relation using 14 galaxies with tip of the red giant branch measurements. Compared with the Key Project, a higher value of the Hubble Constant by 10% +/- 7% is inferred. Within the errors the two distance scales are therefore consistent. We describe the additional data required for a conclusive tip of the red giant branch measurement of H_0.
We present the first VI CCD photometry for the Sculptor group galaxy ESO 540-032 obtained at the Very Large Telescope UT1+FORS1. The (I, V-I) colour-magnitude diagram indicates that this intermediate-type dwarf galaxy is dominated by old, metal-poor ([Fe/H]~-1.7 dex) stars, with a small population of slightly more metal-rich ([Fe/H]~-1.3 dex), young (age 150-500 Myr) stars. Context: A large fraction of otherwise similar asymptotic giant branch stars (AGB) do not show OH maser emission. As shown recently, a restricted lifetime may give a natural explanation as to why only part of any sample emits maser emission at a given epoch. The properties of the velocity field in the local volume (cz < 550 km/s) have been difficult to constrain due to a lack of a consistent set of galaxy distances. The sparse observations available to date suggest a remarkably quiet flow, with little deviation from a pure Hubble law. We present color-magnitude diagrams and luminosity functions of stars in the nearby galaxy IC 10, based on VI CCD photometry acquired with the COSMIC prime-focus camera on the Palomar 5m telescope. The apparent I-band luminosity function of stars in the halo of IC 10 shows an identifiable rise at I~21.7 mag. This is interpreted as being the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) at M_V~-4 mag. We present [Ffe/H] abundance results that involve a sample of stars with a wide range in luminosity from luminous giants to stars near the turnoff in a globular cluster. Our sample of 25 stars in M71 includes 10 giant stars more luminous than the RHB, 3 horizontal branch stars, 9 giant stars less luminous than the RHB, and 3 stars near the turnoff. We analyzed both Fe I and Fe II lines in high dispersion spectra observed with HIRES at the W. M. Keck Observatory. We have used the adaptive optics system on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope to study a field 6 arcmin from the center of the heavily obscured elliptical galaxy Maffei 1. Our near diffraction-limited H and K' images reveal an excess population of objects with respect to a background field, and we conclude that the asymptotic giant branch tip (AGB-tip) in Maffei 1 occurs at K = 20 +/- 0.25. (2000), and {\em (b)} on a direct distance estimate for \omen, recently obtained by Thompson et al.(2001) from a detached eclipsing binary.
