The initial conditions in the chemical non-equilibrated medium and Bjorken expanding medium at RHIC are determined. With a set of rate equations describing the chemical equilibration of quarks and gluons based on perturbative QCD, we investigate the consequence for parton evolution at RHIC. With considering parton evolution, it is shown that the Debye screening mass and the inverse mean free-path of gluons reduce with increasing proper time in the QGP medium. The parton evolution affects the parton energy loss with detailed balance, both parton energy loss from stimulated emission in the chemical non-equilibrated expanding medium and in Bjorken expanding medium are linear dependent on the propagating distance rather than square dependent in the static medium. The energy absorption can not be neglected at intermediate jet energies and small propagating distance of the energetic parton in contrast with that it is important only at intermediate jet energy in the static medium. This will increase the energy and propagating distance dependence of the parton energy loss and will affect the shape of suppression of moderately high P_T hadron spectra.
The calculations of $Z + b{\bar b}$ tagged jet production performed in the four- and five-flavour schemes allow for detailed comparison of the heavy flavour structure of collinear and transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions as well as for detailed investigations of heavy quarks radiated during the initial state parton shower cascade. We have determined the first set of collinear and TMD parton distributions in the four-flavour scheme with NLO DGLAP splitting functions within the Parton-Branching (PB) approach. The four- and five-flavour PB-TMD distributions were used to calcul…
Stimulated gluon emission and thermal absorption in addition to induced radiation are considered for an energetic parton propagating inside a quark- gluon plasma. In the presence of thermal gluons, stimulated emission reduces while absorption increases the parton's energy. The net effect is a reduction of the parton energy loss. Though decreasing asymptotically as $T/E$ with the parton energy, the relative reduction is found to be important for intermediate energies. The modified energy dependence of the energy loss will affect the shape of suppression of moderately high $p_T$ hadrons due to j…
We use detailed balance for a hadron composed of quark and gluon Fock states to obtain parton distributions in the proton and pion on the basis of a simple statistical model.
Neutrino induced deep inelastic charm production off strange sea partons in the nucleon is studied in the framework of the MSbar fixed flavor factorization scheme. The momentum (z) distributions of the produced D mesons as calculated in the next-to-leading order QCD analysis are presented and compared to their leading order counterparts. Perturbative stability within this formalism is demonstrated and the compatibility of recent next-to-leading order (NLO) strange quark distributions with available dimuon data is investigated. Our NLO (MSbar) results provide, for the first time, the tools requ…
We report the evolution effects on jet energy loss with detailed balance. The initial conditions and parton evolution based on perturbative QCD in the chemical non-equilibrated medium and Bjorken expanding medium at RHIC are determined. The parton evolution affect the jet energy loss evidently. This will increase the energy and propagating distance dependence of the parton energy loss and will affect the shape of suppression of moderately high P_{T} hadron spectra.
Detailed and precise background predictions are the backbone of large parts of high-energy collider phenomenology. This requires to embed precision QCD calculations into detailed event generators, to produce comprehensive software simulations. Only continued progress in this direction will allow us to exploit the full potential of measurements at the Large Hadron Collider, or at a future Electron-Ion Collider. This work presents a method to combine third-order QCD calculations for hadronic scattering processes with Monte-Carlo event generators, thus enabling a new generation of precision predi…
We study the impact of transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions on detailed features of multi-jet final states, focusing on angular jet correlations in DIS data.
We perform a detailed analysis of next-to-leading order plus parton-shower matching in vector-boson-fusion WW production including leptonic decays. The study is performed in the Herwig 7 framework interfaced to VBFNLO 3, using the angular-ordered and dipole-based parton-shower algorithms combined with the subtractive and multiplicative matching algorithms.
We perform a detailed study of the sources of perturbative uncertainty in parton shower predictions within the Herwig 7 event generator. We benchmark two rather different parton shower algorithms, based on angular-ordered and dipole-type evolution, against each other. We deliberately choose leading order plus parton shower as the benchmark setting to identify a controllable set of uncertainties. This will enable us to reliably assess improvements by higher-order contributions in a follow-up work.
A complete derivation, from first principles, of the reaction-rate formula for a generic process taking place in a heat bath of finite volume is given. It is shown that the formula involves no finite-volume correction. Through perturbative diagrammatic analysis of the resultant formula, the detailed-balance formula is derived. The zero-temperature limit of the formula is discussed. Thermal cutting rules, which are introduced in previous work, are compared with those introduced by other authors.
The parton branching formulation of TMD evolution has recently been used to make predictions for jet observables at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), including perturbative matching at next-to-leading order (NLO). This contribution presents results for the azimuthal Δ-ϕcorrelations in events with di-jets at large transverse momentum. It focuses on the back-to-back region of large Δ-ϕand discusses prospects for detailed studies of QCD dynamics in this region at the LHC.
Following a previous detailed study of unpolarized generalized parton distribution functions in the non-singlet sector, and at zero values of the skewness variable, $ζ$, we propose a physically motivated parametrization that is valid at $ζ\neq 0$. Our method makes use of information from the nucleon form factor data, from deep inelastuc scattering parton distribution functions, and from lattice results on the Mellin moments of generalized parton distributions. It provides, therefore, a step towards a model independent extraction of generalized distributions from the data, alternative to the ma…
We discuss the prospects of observing double parton scattering (DPS) processes with purely leptonic final states at the LHC. We first study same-sign W pair production, which is particularly suited for studying momentum and valence number conservation effects, followed by discussions on double Drell-Yan and production of J/psi pairs. The effects of initial state and intrinsic transverse momentum smearing on pair-wise transverse momentum balance characteristic to DPS are studied quantitatively. We also present a new technique, based on rapidity differences, to extract the DPS component from a d…
Jet momentum balance measurements, such as those recently performed by the CMS collaboration, provide an opportunity to quantify the energy transferred from a parton shower to the underlying medium in heavy-ion collisions. Specifically, I argue that the Cooper-Frye freezeout distribution associated with the energy and momentum deposited by the parton shower is controlled to a significant extent by the distribution of the underlying bulk matter and independent of the details of how deposited energy is redistributed in the medium, which is largely determined by transport coefficients such as she…
In this study, we assume the hadrons as an ensemble of quark-gluon Fock states and apply statistical effects to explain the spin distribution of quarks for lambda hyperon. We extend the principle of detailed balance given by Zhang et al. [9] to calculate the probability of every Fock state in lambda. Using these probabilities, we have calculated quark distribution of spin, hyperon weak decay constant, SU(3) reduced matrix elements and their ratio and magnetic moment etc. using the statistical model proposed in ref.[17]. The extension of statistical model comes here with inclusion of more sub p…
Recent experimental data have established some of the basic features of multiple interactions in hadron-hadron collisions. The emphasis is therefore now shifting, to one of exploring more detailed aspects. Starting from a brief review of the current situation, a next-generation model is developed, wherein a detailed account is given of correlated flavour, colour, longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions, encompassing both the partons initiating perturbative interactions and the partons left in the beam remnants. Some of the main features are illustrated for the Tevatron and the LHC.
At the early stage of heavy ion collisions, non-trivial topologies of the gauge fields can be created resulting in an imbalance of axial charge density and eventually separation of electric charges along the direction of the magnetic field produced in such collisions. This process is called the chiral magnetic effect (CME). In this work we implement such a charge separation at the partonic level in AMPT for Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV to study its consequence on experimental observables. We present the effects on the pion elliptic flow ($v_2$) and the charged particle balance…
Within a multi-phase transport (AMPT) model with string melting scenario, the transverse momentum imbalance between prompt photon and jet is studied in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}$ = 2.76 TeV. Jet loses more energy in more central collisions due to strong partonic interactions between jet parton shower and partonic matter, which is more significant than due to hadronic interactions only. The hadronization and final-state hadronic interactions have little influences on the imbalance. The imbalance ratio $x_{jγ}$ is sensitive to both production position and passing direction of $γ$…
Medium modification of jet fragmentation function due to multiple scattering and induced gluon radiation leads directly to jet quenching or suppression of leading particle distribution from jet fragmentation. One can extract an effective total parton energy loss which can be related to the total transverse momentum broadening. For an expanding medium, both are shown to be sensitive to the initial parton density and formation time. Therefore, one can extract the initial parton density and formation time from simultaneous measurements of parton energy loss and transverse momentum broadening. Imp…
We derive a generalized form of Altarelli-Parisi equations to decribe the time evolution of parton distributions in a nuclear medium. In the framework of the leading logarithmic approximation, we obtain a set of coupled integro- differential equations for the parton distribution functions and equations for the virtuality (``age'') distribution of partons. In addition to parton branching processes, we take into account fusion and scattering processes that are specific to QCD in medium. Detailed balance between gain and loss terms in the resulting evolution equations correctly accounts for both …
As the core ingredient for spin polarization, the local equilibrium spin distribution function is derived from the detailed balance principle. The kinetic theory for interacting fermionic systems is applied to the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model at quark level. Under the semi-classical expansion with respect to $\hbar$ and non-perturbative expansion with respect to $N_c$, the kinetic equations for the vector and axial-vector distribution functions are derived with collision terms. It is found that, for an initially unpolarized system, non-zero spin polarization can be generated at the order of $\hba…
The charm structure function, ($F_2^{c\overline{c}}(x, Q^2)$), is calculated in the framework of the $k_t$-factorization formalism by using the unintegrated parton distribution functions (UPDF), which are generated through the Kimber et al. (KMR) and Martin et al. (MRW) procedures. The Martin group (MMHT2014) parton distribution functions (PDF) is used as the input PDF for the corresponding UPDF. The resulted $F_2^{c\overline{c}}(x, Q^2)$ is compared with the predicted data and the calculations given by the ZEUS and H1 collaborations, the parton pQCD theory, i.e. the general-mass variable-flav…
In this study, the proton is taken as an ensemble of quark-gluon Fock states. Using the principle of balance that every Fock state should be balanced with all of the nearby Fock states (denoted as the balance model), instead of the principle of detailed balance that any two nearby Fock states should be balanced with each other (denoted as the detailed balance model), the probabilities of finding every Fock state of the proton are obtained. The balance model can be taken as a revised version of the detailed balance model, which can give an excellent description of the light flavor sea asymmetry…
Based on QCD-inspired models for multiple jets production, we developed a Monte Carlo program to study jet and the associated particle production in high energy $pp$, $pA$ and $AA$ collisions. The physics behind the program which includes multiple minijet production, soft excitation, nuclear shadowing of parton distribution functions and jet interaction in dense matter is briefly discussed. A detailed description of the program and instructions on how to use it are given.
A new model potential in the presence of collective flow describing the interaction of the hard jet with scattering centers is derived based on the static color-screened Yukawa potential. The flow effect on jet quenching with detailed balance is investigated in pQCD. It turns out that the collective flow changes the emission current and the LPM destructive interference comparing to that in the static medium. Considering the collective flow with velocity v_z along the jet direction, the energy loss is (1 - v_z) times that in the static medium to the first order of opacity. The flow dependence o…
In this study, the proton is taken as an ensemble of quark-gluon Fock states. Using the principle of detailed balance, we find $\bar{d}-\bar{u} \approx 0.124$, which is in surprisingly agreement with the experimental observation.
In this study, the proton is taken as an ensemble of quark-gluon Fock states. Using the principle of detailed balance, the probabilities of finding every Fock states of the proton are obtained without any parameter. A new origin of the light flavor sea quark asymmetry, i.e., $\bar{u} \not= \bar{d}$, is given as a pure statistical effect. It is found that $\bar{d}-\bar{u} \approx 0.124$, which is in surprisingly agreement with the experimental observation.
In the Horava-Lifshitz theory of quantum gravity, two conditions -- detailed balance and projectability -- are usually assumed. The breaking of projectability simplifies the theory, but it leads to serious problems with the theory. The breaking of detailed balance leads to a more complicated form of the theory, but it appears to resolve some of the problems. Sotiriou, Visser and Weinfurtner formulated the most general theory of Horava-Lifshitz type without detailed balance. We compute the linear scalar perturbations of the FRW model in this form of HL theory. We show that the higher-order curv…
I give a self-contained review on radiative p_T-broadening and radiative energy loss of high-energy partons in QCD matter. The typical p_T^2 of high-energy partons receives a double logarithmic correction due to the recoiling effect of medium-induced gluon radiation. Such a double logarithmic term, averaged over the path length of the partons, can be taken as the radiative correction to the jet quenching parameter qhat and hence contributes to radiative energy loss. This has also been confirmed by detailed calculations of energy loss by radiating two gluons.
Detailed balance and projectability conditions are two main assumptions when Horava recently formulated his theory of quantum gravity - the Horava-Lifshitz (HL) theory. While the latter represents an important ingredient, the former often believed needs to be abandoned, in order to obtain an ultraviolet stable scalar field, among other things. In this paper, because of several attractive features of this condition, we revisit it, and show that the scalar field can be stabilized, if the detailed balance condition is allowed to be softly broken. Although this is done explicitly in the non-relati…
