We report the results from our analysis of {\it Suzaku} XIS (0.5-10 keV) and HXD/PIN (15-40 keV) observations of five well-known local ULIRGs: {\em IRAS} F05189-2524, {\em IRAS} F08572+3915, Mrk 273, PKS 1345+12, and Arp 220. The XIS observations of F05189-2524 and Mrk 273 reveal strong iron lines consistent with Fe K$α$ and changes in spectral shapes with respect to previous {\it Chandra} and {\it XMM-Newton} observations. Mrk 273 is also detected by the HXD/PIN at $\sim$1.8-$σ$. For F05189-2524, modeling of the data from the different epochs suggests that the change in spectral shape is likely due to the central source switching off, leaving behind a residual reflection spectrum, or an increase in the absorbing column. An increase in the covering fraction of the absorber can describe the spectral variations seen in Mrk 273, although a reduction in the intrinsic AGN luminosity cannot be formally ruled out. The {\it Suzaku} spectra of Mrk 273 are well fit by a ~94% covering fraction model with a column density of $\sim10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$. The absorption-corrected log[$L_{\rm 2-10 keV}$ / $L_{\rm IR}$] ratio is consistent with those found in PG Quasars. The 0.5-10 keV spectrum of PKS 1345+12 and Arp 220 seem unchanged from previous observations and their hard X-ray emission is not convincingly detected by the HXD/PIN. The large column density derived from CO observations and the large equivalent width of an ionized Fe line in Arp 220 can be reconciled by an ionized reflection model. F08572+3915 is undetected in both the XIS and HXD/PIN, but the analysis of unpublished {\em Chandra} data provides a new measurement at low energies.
Suzaku observation of an ultraluminous X-ray source, NGC 2403 Source 3, performed on 2006 March 16--17, is reported. The Suzaku XIS spectrum of Source 3 was described with a multi-color black-body-like emission from an optically thick accretion disk. The innermost temperature and radius of the accretion disk was measured to be $T_{\rm in} = 1.08_{-0.03}^{+0.02} $ keV and $R_{\rm in} = 122.1_{-6.8}^{+7.7} α^{1/2}$ km, respectively, where $α= (\cos 60^\circ /\cos i)$ with $i$ being the disk inclination. The bolometric luminosity of the source was estimated to be $L_{\rm bol} = 1.82 \times 10^{39…
Two ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) in the nearby Sb galaxy NGC 1313, named X-1 and X-2, were observed with Suzaku on 2005 September 15. During the observation for a net exposure of 28~ks (but over a gross time span of 90~ks), both objects varied in intensity by about 50~%. The 0.4--10 keV X-ray luminosity of X-1 and X-2 was measured as $2.5 \times 10^{40}~{\rm erg~s^{-1}}$ and $5.8 \times 10^{39}~{\rm erg~s^{-1}}$, respectively, with the former the highest ever reported for this ULX. The spectrum of X-1 can be explained by a sum of a strong and variable power-law component with a high ener…
This paper reports the discovery of a bright X-ray transient source, Suzaku J1305-4913, in the south-west arm of the nearby Seyfert II galaxy NGC 4945. It was detected at a 0.5 -- 10 keV flux of $2.2 \times 10^{-12}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ during the Suzaku observation conducted on 2006 January 15 -- 17, but was undetectable in a shorter observation on 2005 August 22 --23, with an upper limit of $1.7 \times 10^{-14}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ (90% confidence level). At a distance of 3.7 Mpc, the bolometric luminosity of the source becomes $L_{\rm bol} = 4.4 \times 10^{39} α$ erg s$^{-1}$, where $…
We have observed 14 nearby (z<0.16) Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs) with Spitzer at 3.6-24 microns. The underlying host galaxies are well-detected, in addition to the luminous nuclear cores. While the spatial resolution of Spitzer is poor, the great sensitivity of the data reveals the underlying galaxy merger remnant, and provides the first look at off-nuclear mid-infrared activity.
We review the evidence which suggests that ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs) are the precursors of optically selected quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) and discuss additional data that suggests that the majority, if not all QSOs, may begin their lives in an intense infrared phase. Implications for the host galaxies of QSOs are discussed.
Imaging spectroscopy using the new Palomar Integral Field Spectrograph is presented for the Pa-alpha line in four ultraluminous infrared galaxies. In most cases, we are able to establish the geometry of the merger, and thus estimate the time in the merger process at which we are viewing the system. The resulting range in estimated ages, some of which are very young encounters (~5x10^7 yr), is not predicted by merger models, which produce high rates of star formation either 1-2x10^8 years after the first encounter or very late (~10^9 yr) in the merger process. Even in the very young mergers, th…
Many ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) are powered by quasars hidden in the center, but many are also powered by starbursts. A simply diagnostic diagram is proposed that can identify obscured quasars in ULIRGs by their high-ionization emission lines ([O III] 5007/Hbeta >~ 5), and ``warm'' IR color (f_{25}/f_{60} >~ 0.25).
We have obtained ISOPHOT-S low resolution mid-infrared spectra of a sample of 60 Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs). We use the strength of the `PAH' mid-infrared features as a discriminator between starburst and AGN activity, and to probe for evolutionary effects. We focus on the fact that observed ratios of PAH features in ULIRGs differ slightly from those in lower luminosity starbursts. We suggest that such PAH ratio changes relate to the conditions in the interstellar medium in these galaxies, and in particular to extinction.
An imaging survey of the {\em IRAS} 1-Jy sample of 118 ultraluminous infrared galaxies was conducted at optical (R) and near-infrared (K') wavelengths using the University of Hawaii 2.2m telescope. The methods of observation and data reduction are described. An R and K' atlas of the entire sample is presented along with some of the basic astrometric and photometric parameters derived from these images. A more detailed analysis of these data is presented in a companion paper (Veilleux, Kim, & Sanders 2002; astro-ph/0207401).
It has been often considered that the dissipative collapse caused by a merger of two gas-rich galaxies is responsible for the intense nuclear starbursts or the nonthermal quasar activity in ultraluminous infrared galaxies due to the efficient fueling induced by it. It is also widely known that Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIGs) are often found in merging systems. Some ULIGs, such as Arp 220, show two compact starburst regions which are considered to be associated with two galactic nuclei in the process of merging. However, since a merger between two galaxies may make only one compact star…
For the past several years, our group has pursued a vigorous ground-based program aimed at understanding the nature of ultraluminous infrared galaxies. We recently published the results from a optical/near-infrared spectroscopic survey of a large statistically complete sample of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (the "IRAS 1-Jy sample"). We now present the results from our recently completed optical/near-infrared imaging survey of the 1-Jy sample. These data provide detailed morphological information on both large scale (e.g., intensity and color profiles, intensity and size of tidal tails and b…
Near infrared spectra with resolution R ~ 1100 in the rest wavelength range 1.8-2.2 microns have been obtained for a complete sample of 33 ultraluminous infrared galaxies. Of the 33 objects observed, 2 show evidence of a central AGN through either a broad Paschen-alpha line or emission in the 1.963 micron fine structure of [Si VI]. In the median spectrum of the remaining 31 objects, the lines present are recombination lines of Hydrogen, neutral Helium, vibration-rotation lines of H_2, and [Fe II]. There is no indication of AGN activity in the median spectrum, either through broad atomic recomb…
The mid infrared polarisation properties of four Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs) have been investigated by broad band filter observations with the ISOCAM instrument on board the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). The wavelength region from 5 to 18 mic. was selected where the emission from the putative torus peaks. We report detection of polarisation for all ULIRGs studied. The fractional polarisation ranges from about 3% up to 8%. The highest polarisation is recorded in Mrk231 which has a clear AGN signature, whereas the lowest is for Arp220, which is generally thought to be powered pr…
This paper reviews the recent results from a comprehensive investigation of the most luminous mergers in the local universe, the ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) and the quasars. First, the frequency of occurrence and importance of black hole driven nuclear activity in ULIRGs are discussed using the latest sets of optical, near-infrared, mid-infrared, and X-ray spectra on these objects. Obvious trends with luminosity, infrared color, and morphology are pointed out. Next, the host galaxy properties of ULIRGs are described in detail and then compared with local quasar hosts and inactive …
We have detected the host galaxies of 16 nearby, radio-quiet quasars using images obtained with the Near-Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS). We confirm that these luminous quasars tend to live in luminous, early-type host galaxies, and we use the host-galaxy magnitudes to refine the luminosity/host-mass limit inferred from ground-based studies. If quasars obey the relation $M_{black hole}/M_{spheroid}\sim0.006$ found for massive dark objects in nonactive galaxies, then our analysis implies that they radiate at up to $\sim20%$ of the Eddington rate. An analogous analysis for…
New tools from Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) mid-infrared spectroscopy have recently become available to determine the power sources of dust-obscured ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). We compare ISO classifications - starburst or active galactic nucleus (AGN) - with classifications from optical spectroscopy, and with optical/near-infrared searches for hidden broad-line regions. The agreement between mid-infrared and optical classification is excellent if optical LINER spectra are assigned to the starburst group. The starburst nature of ULIRG LINERs strongly supports the suggestion t…
We present low resolution near-infrared spectroscopy of an unbiased sample of 24 ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs), selected from samples previously observed spectroscopically in the mid-infrared with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). Qualitatively, the near-infrared spectra resemble those of starbursts. Only in one ULIRG, IRAS 04114-5117E, do we find spectroscopic evidence for AGN activity. The spectroscopic classification in the near-infrared is in very good agreement with the mid-infrared one. For a subset of our sample for which extinction corrections can be derived from Pa-alph…
We present mid/far-infrared photometry of nine FeLoBAL QSOs, taken using the Spitzer space telescope. All nine objects are extremely bright in the infrared, with rest-frame 1-1000 micron luminosities comparable to those of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies. Furthermore, a significant fraction of the infrared emission from many, and possibly all of the sample is likely to arise from star formation, with star formation rates of order several hundred solar masses per year. We combine these results with previous work to propose that FeLoBALs mark galaxies and QSOs in which an extremely luminous star…
We report results of soft gamma-ray observations of the ultraluminous infrared galaxies Arp 220, Mrk 273, and Mrk 231 in order to test whether the infrared radiation from these sources originates from buried active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Only upper limits are measured, implying that the emergent soft gamma-ray luminosities are 1-2 orders of magnitude smaller than the infrared luminosities. Monte Carlo simulations of radiation transport through tori are used to infer the minimum column densities $N_H$ required to block transmission of soft gamma-rays from a buried AGN, assuming that spectra of…
The dust-to-gas ratios in three different samples of luminous, ultraluminous, and hyperluminous infrared galaxies are calculated by modelling their radio to soft X-ray spectral energy distributions using composite models which account for the photoionizing radiation from HII regions, starbursts, or AGNs, and for shocks. The models are limited to a set which broadly reproduces the mid-IR fine structure line ratios of local, IR bright, starburst galaxies. The results show that two types of clouds contribute to the IR emission. Those characterized by low shock velocities and low preshock densitie…
We present the results of high resolution mapping of the CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) emission of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) IRAS 10190+1322, with the IRAM interferometer, down to an angular resolution of ~0.3 arcsec. This object is composed of two interacting galaxies with a projected nuclear separation of 6 kpc, and was selected to analyze the physical and dynamical properties of the molecular gas in each galaxy in order to study the conditions that lead a galaxy pair to become ultraluminous in the infrared. With the exception of Arp 220, the closest ULIRG, this is the first time that …
We use redshift observations of two deep 1.4GHz fields to probe the evolution of the bright end of the radio galaxy luminosity function to z=1.5. We show that the number of galaxies with radio power that would correspond locally to an ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIG) evolves rapidly over this redshift range. The optical spectra and X-ray luminosities are used to refine this result by separating the sources with clear active galactic nucleus (AGN) signatures from those that may be dominated by star formation. Both populations show extremely rapid evolution over this redshift range. We find …
This paper reports the latest results from a near-infrared search for hidden broad-line regions (BLRs: FWHM >~ 2,000 km/s) in ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs). The new sample contains thirty-nine ULIGs from the 1-Jy sample selected for their lack of BLRs at optical wavelengths. The results from this new study are combined with those from our previous optical and near-infrared surveys to derive the fraction of all ULIGs with optical or near-infrared signs of genuine AGN activity (either a BLR or [Si VI] emission). Comparisons of the dereddened emission-line luminosities of the optical or…
We present high spatial resolution H and K'-band images of a complete sample of ultraluminous infrared galaxies selected to have warm mid-infrared colors known to be characteristic of active galaxies. The extended underlying galaxy is detected in each system, as are tidal features and many of the star-forming knots seen at optical wavelengths. While some of these knots have a considerable near-infrared excess, we show that they are likely to have bolometric luminosities more similar to that of the extended starbursts with similar optical morphology seen in less far-infrared luminous interactin…
We present results from our Very Large Telescope large program to study the dynamical evolution of local Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs) and QSOs. This paper is the second in a series presenting the stellar kinematics of 54 ULIRGs, derived from high resolution, long-slit H- and K-band spectroscopy. The data presented here, including observations of 17 new targets, are mainly focused on sources that have coalesced into a single nucleus. The stellar kinematics, extracted from the CO ro-vibrational bandheads in our spectra, indicate that ULIRG remnants are dynamically heated systems with…
Near-infrared spectroscopy using the new Palomar Integral Field Spectrograph indicates the presence of an AGN (active galactic nucleus) in the ultraluminous infrared galaxy IRAS 08311-2459. The high-velocity wings of the Paschen-alpha hydrogen recombination line are seen to be spatially unresolved, and with no positional offset between red and blue high velocity emission. The [Si VI] coronal line, with a 167 eV excitation potential, is also spatially unresolved with a velocity width comparable to that of the broad component of the Pa-alpha emission. The low velocity component of the Pa-alpha e…
We present spectra taken with the Infrared Spectrograph on Spitzer covering the 5-38micron region of three Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs): Mrk 1014 (z=0.163), and Mrk 463 (z=0.051), and UGC 5101 (z=0.039). The continua of UGC 5101 and Mrk 463 show strong silicate absorption suggesting significant optical depths to the nuclei at 10microns. UGC 5101 also shows the clear presence of water ice in absorption. PAH emission features are seen in both Mrk 1014 and UGC 5101, including the 16.4micron line in UGC 5101. The fine structure lines are consistent with dominant AGN power sources in bo…
We present low resolution mid infrared spectra of 16 ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) obtained with the CVF spectroscopy mode of ISOCAM on board the Infrared Space Observatory ISO. Our sample completes previous ISO spectroscopy of ultra- and hyperluminous infrared galaxies towards higher luminosities. The combined samples cover an infrared luminosity range of \~10^{12 -13.1} Lo. For about half of the high luminosity ULIRGs studied here, strong aromatic emission bands suggest starburst dominance. Other spectra are dominated by a strong AGN-related continuum with weak superposed emission…
The properties of starbursts in ultraluminous infrared galaxies are discussed, with particular emphasis on the fueling, the amount of extinction and the intrinsic properties of the nuclear starbursts. It is shown by the example of NGC6240 that the H_2 vibrational lines can be used to measure the rate of gas inflow into the potential well, which is sufficient to fuel a nuclear starburst of the intensity required to account for the far-infrared emission. It is shown that in Arp220 the faintness of all tracers of ionized gas can be accounted for by Lyman continuum absorption by dust within the io…
Millimeter (CO) observations of 5 double-nucleus ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIG) mergers are presented. With nuclear separations of 3-5 kpc, these galaxies are in the ``intermediate'' stages of the merger process. A preliminary comparison of the distribution of molecular gas (the likely fuel source for both starbursts and active galactic nuclei: AGN) shows a tendency for molecular gas to be associated with the AGN nucleus of ULIGs with ``warm'', Seyfert-like infrared colors ($f_{25 microns}/f_{60 microns} >~ 0.20) and associated with both stellar nuclei of ULIGs with ``cool'' infrared col…
This proceeding discusses the potential modifications to the mid-infrared spectral energy distribution (SED) of a high-redshift dusty AGN that is graviationally lensed by a foreground galaxy. The mid-infrared colour of a lensed galaxy would typically be bluer than that of the same galaxy in the absence of magnification. This effect would make it more difficult to interpret the very small sample of high-redshift dusty AGN for which broad-band SEDs are known in terms of the viewing angle of an obscuring dust torus, as all are known to be lensed by galaxies.
In the complete sample of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) compiled by Kim (1995) about 5% consists of widely separated galaxies which are presumably in the early phase of interaction. This fact is contrary to the conventional view that ULIRGs are in the final stages of the merger of two gas-rich disk galaxies. We have undertaken high resolution CO(J=1-0) observations for the ultraluminous infrared galaxies that have nuclear separations larger than 20 kpc. We have detected the CO emission in 5 out of 6 systems, but only in one component of the ULIRG pairs. 4 of them have LINER spectral…
The spatial cluster-galaxy correlation amplitude, Bgc, is computed for a set of 76 (z < 0.3) ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) from the 1-Jy sample. The Bgc parameter is used to quantify the richness of the environment within 0.5 Mpc of each ULIRG. We find that the environment of local ULIRGs is similar to that of the field with the possible exceptions of a few objects with environmental densities typical of clusters with Abell richness classes 0 and 1. No obvious trends are seen with redshift, optical spectral type, infrared luminosity, or infrared color. We compare these results with …
We report the first results of a low resolution mid-infrared spectroscopic survey of an unbiased, far-infrared selected sample of 60 ultraluminous infrared galaxies, using ISOPHOT-S on board ISO. We use the ratio of the 7.7um `PAH' emission feature to the local continuum as a discriminator between starburst and AGN activity. About 80% of all the ULIRGs are found to be predominantly powered by star formation but the fraction of AGN powered objects increases with luminosity. Observed ratios of the PAH features in ULIRGs differ slightly from those in lower luminosity starbursts. This can be plaus…
We have studied the core morphology of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy Mrk 273 by combining a high-resolution adaptive optics near-infrared image with an optical image from the Hubble Space Telescope and interferometric radio continuum data, all at spatial resolutions of 150 mas or better. The near-infrared image reveals that the nucleus has two main components, both of which have radio counterparts. The strongest component (N) shows very similar extended structure in the radio and near-infrared. It has a flat radio spectrum and is resolved into a double-lobed structure (Ne; Nw), with a sepa…
We calculate infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) from simulations of major galaxy mergers and study the effect of AGN and starburst driven feedback on the evolution of the SED as a function of time. We use a self-consistent three-dimensional radiative equilibrium code to calculate the emergent SEDs and to make images. To facilitate a simple description of our findings, we describe our results in reference to an approximate analytic solution for the far-IR SED. We focus mainly on the luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) and ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) phases of evolution. We cont…
A class of extremely luminous high-redshift galaxies has recently been detected in unbiased submillimetre-wave surveys using the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) camera at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. Most of the luminosity of these galaxies is emitted from warm interstellar dust grains, and they could be the high-redshift counterparts of the low-redshift ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). Only one - SMM J02399-0136 - has yet been studied in detail. Three other very luminous high-redshift dusty galaxies with well determined spectral energy distributions in the mid…
HST NICMOS observations of a sample of 24 luminous (LIGs: L_(IR) [8-1000 microns] = 10^(11.0-11.99) L_sun) and ultraluminous (ULIGs: L_(IR) > 10^(12.0) L_sun) infrared galaxies are presented. The observations provide, for the first time, high resolution HST imaging of the imbedded 1.1 - 2.2 micron nuclear regions of these mergers. All but one of the ULIGs are observed to have at least one compact (50-200 pc) nucleus, and more than half contain what appear to be blue star clusters. The warm infrared galaxies (i.e., the transition sources) are observed to have bright nuclei which account for mos…
Observations of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) with an achieved resolution approaching the diffraction limit in the mid-infrared from 8 - 25 $μ$m using the Keck Telescopes are reported. We find extremely compact structures, with spatial scales of $< 0.3''$ (diameter) in six of the seven ULIRGs observed. These compact sources emit between 30% and 100% of the mid-infrared energy from these galaxies. We have utilized the compact mid-infrared structures as a diagnostic of whether an AGN or a compact (100 -- 300 pc) starburst is the primary power source in these ULIRGs. In Markarian 231, …
We present a result of cross-correlating the Infrared Astronomical Satellite Faint Source Catalogue (IRAS FSC) with the spectroscopic catalogues of galaxies in the Fourth Data Release of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), the Final Data Release of 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) and the Second Data Release of 6dF Galaxy Survey (6dFGS). We have identified 324 ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) including 190 newly discovered ULIRGs, and 2 hyperluminous infrared galaxies (HLIRGs). Adding these new ULIRGs, we increase the number of known ULIRGs by about 30 per cent. The reliability of the …
We present Hubble Space Telescope NICMOS H-band imaging of 33 Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs) at z~2 that were selected from the 24 micron catalog of the Spitzer Extragalactic First Look Survey. The images reveal that at least 17 of the 33 objects are associated with interactions. Up to one fifth of the sources in our sample could be minor mergers whereas only 2 systems are merging binaries with luminosity ratio <=3:1, which is characteristic of local ULIRGs. The rest-frame optical luminosities of the sources are of the order 10^10-10^11 L_sun and their effective radii range from 1.4 …
We present a study of the three ultraluminous infrared galaxies IRAS14348-1447, IRAS19254-7245, and IRAS23128-5919, based on mid-infrared (MIR) spectro-imaging (5-18microns) observations performed with ISOCAM. We find that the MIR emission from each system, which consists of a pair of interacting late type galaxies, is principally confined to the nuclear regions with diameters of 1-2kpc and can account for more than 95% of their IRAS 12micron flux. In each interacting system, the galaxy hosting an active galactic nucleus (AGN) dominates the total spectrum and shows stronger dust continuum (12-…
A sample of 27 ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) systems has been imaged at 1.6 microns using the HST Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS). These ULIRGs are from a larger sample also imaged with HST in the I-band. Images and catalog information for the NICMOS subsample, as well as brief morphological descriptions of each system are presented. Inspection of the infrared images and a comparison with optical images of these systems shows that at least 85% are obviously composed of two or more galaxies involved in a close interaction or merger event, with as many as 93% …
New moderate-resolution mid-infrared spectroscopy at 10 micron of 27 infrared galaxies is presented. The galaxies have been chosen from three 60 micron selected and one 12 micron selected complete flux-limited catalogs of galaxies; 17 of these sources have L_IR(8--1000 micron) >= 5 times 10^11 L_sun. A high-resolution spectrum of the source Arp 299B1 is also presented. Combining these new results with previously published results, a nearly complete 60 micron selected flux limited subsample, with L_IR(8--1000 micron) >= 1.6 times 10^11 L_sun of 25 galaxies is defined. Within this subsample, it …
We use imaging Fabry-Perot observations to explore the dynamical conditions in four southern ultraluminous (L_IR > 10^12 L_sun) infrared galaxies. These galaxies all show morphological and kinematic features indicative of a major merger, but span a wide range of inferred dynamical ages: the youngest system is just past the first encounter, while the oldest has already merged into a single object. This diversity in dynamical states indicates that ultraluminous activity is not confined solely to late-stage mergers. The Halpha emission is more spatially concentrated in the later stage mergers, in…
Millimeter CO(1-0) interferometry and high resolution, Hubble Space Telescope (HST) 1.1, 1.6, and 2.2 micron imaging of the radio compact galaxy PKS 1345+12 are presented. With an infrared luminosity of 2x10^{12} L_sun, PKS 1345+12 is a prime candidate for studying the link between the ultraluminous infrared galaxy phenomenon and radio galaxies. These new observations probe the molecular gas distribution and obscured nuclear regions of PKS 1345+12 and provide morphological support for the idea that the radio activity in powerful radio galaxies is triggered by the merger of gas rich galaxies. T…
The origin of huge infrared luminosities of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs) is still in question. Recently, Genzel et al. made mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy of a large number of ULIGs and found that the major energy source in them is massive stars formed in the recent starburst activity; i.e., $\sim$ 70% -- 80% of the sample are predominantly powered by the starburst. However, it is known that previous optical spectroscopic observations showed that the majority of ULIGs are classified as Seyferts or LINERs (low-ionization nuclear emission-line regions). In order to reconcile this dif…
We present NIR observations of a sample of mainly interacting ULIRGs, comprising H and K band spectra. Our main aims are to investigate the power source of these extremely luminous objects and the various excitation mechanisms of the strong molecular hydrogen emission often seen in such objects. Broadened emission lines were only detected in one object, IRAS 23498, consistent with previous results for this galaxy. The [SiVI] emission line was detected in IRAS17179 and IRAS20210, both classified as Sy2s. Two of the sample were unclassified, IRAS00150 and IRAS23420, which exhibit neither [SiVI] …
Ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) are outstanding due to their huge luminosity output in the infrared, which is predominantly powered by super starbursts and/or hidden active galactic nuclei (AGN). NGC 6240 is one of the nearest ULIRGs and is considered a key representative of its class. Here, we report the first high-resolution imaging spectroscopy of NGC 6240 in X-rays. The observation, performed with the ACIS-S detector aboard the Chandra X-ray observatory, led to the discovery of two hard nuclei, coincident with the optical-IR nuclei of NGC 6240. The AGN character of both nuclei is …
We present high spatial resolution (FWHM 0.3-0.8") BIHK'-band imaging of a sample of ultraluminous infrared galaxies with "cool" mid-infrared colors (f25/f60 < 0.2) which select against AGN-like systems and which form a complementary sample to the "warm" ULIGs of Surace et al. (1998). We find that all of the cool ULIGs are either advanced mergers or are pre-mergers with evidence for still-separate nuclei with separations greater than 600 pc. Extended tidal features such as tails and loops as well as clustered star formation are observed in most systems. This extended tidal structure suggests a…
We investigate whether or not a supermassive black hole (SMBH) with mass $\gtrsim 10^8 M_\odot$ can be made in the heart of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs) during the course of mergers between/among gas rich galaxies. (a) If one progenitor galaxy had a seed SMBH with mass of $\sim 10^7 M_\odot$, this seed SMBH can grow up to $\gtrsim 10^8 M_\odot$ due to efficient Bondi-type gas accretion during the course of merger given a gas density in the circumnuclear region of $n_H \sim 10^3 cm^{-3}$. (b) Even if there was no progenitor galaxy with a seed SMBH, star clusters with compact remnants…
High-resolution, CO(1-0) interferometry of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy IRAS 14348-1447 is presented. The merger system has a molecular gas mass of \~3x10^10 solar masses and a projected nuclear separation of 4.8 kpc (3.5"), making it one of the most molecular gas-rich galaxies known and an ideal candidate for studying the intermediate stages of an ultraluminous merger event. The CO morphology shows two molecular gas components associated with the stellar nuclei of the progenitors, consistent with the idea that the molecular disks are gravitationally bound by the dense bulges of the proge…
We present X-ray spectra of four ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) with detectable broad near-infrared emission lines produced by active galactic nuclei (AGNs): Mrk 463, PKS 1345+12, IRAS 05189-2524, and IRAS 07598+6508. With the exception of IRAS 07598+6508, high quality X-ray spectra obtained with XMM or Chandra show modest (30-340 eV) equivalent widths of the 6.4 keV Fe K alpha emission line and clear signatures for absorption at a level of 4-33 * 10^22 cm^-2 for the main power-law components from the AGNs. These spectral properties are typical of Compton-thin AGNs, and so we estimat…
We have carried out a spectropolarimetric search for hidden broad-line quasars in three ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) discovered in the positional correlations between sources detected in deep radio surveys and the IRAS Faint Source Catalog. Only the high-ionization Seyfert 2 galaxy TF J1736+1122 is highly polarized, displaying a broad-line spectrum visible in polarized light. The other two objects, TF J1020+6436 and FF J1614+3234, display spectra dominated by a population of young (A-type) stars similar to those of ``E + A'' galaxies. They are unpolarized, showing no sign of hidden…
At luminosities above ~10^{11} L_sun, infrared galaxies become the dominant population of extragalactic objects in the local Universe (z < 0.5), being more numerous than optically selected starburst and Seyfert galaxies, and QSOs at comparable bolometric luminosity. At the highest luminosities, ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs: L_ir > 10^{12} L_sun), outnumber optically selected QSOs by a factor of ~1.5-2. All of the nearest ULIGs (z < 0.1) appear to be advanced mergers that are powered by both a circumnuclear starburst and AGN, both of which are fueled by an enormous concentration of mo…
We report on a spectro-polarimetric analysis of four southern Ultra-Luminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs), aimed at constraining the presence of hidden broad AGN lines. For IRAS 19254--7245 ({\sl The Superantennae}) we find evidence for a significant level of polarized light in the H$α$ line with FWHM$>$2300 km/s. Some degree of polarization is also detected in IRAS 20551-4250, though with lower significance. In the two other sources (IRAS 20100--4156 and IRAS 22491--1808) no polarized signals are detected. Although it is unclear from the present data if the origin of polarization is due to refl…
This paper discusses the optical spectroscopic properties of the IRAS 1-Jy sample of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs). One hundred and eight of the 118 1-Jy ULIGs have been observed at dlambda = 8.3 AA resolution over the wavelength range ~4500 A -- 8900 A. These data are combined with large, previously published sets of optical spectroscopic data of lower luminosity infrared galaxies to look for systematic trends with infrared luminosity over the luminosity range L_ir ~ 10^{10.5}-10^{13} L_sun. As found in previous studies, the fraction of Seyfert galaxies among luminous infrared galax…
Prominent Fe K line emission is detected at around 6.7 keV in the XMM-Newton spectrum of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy Arp220. The continuum emission in the 2.5-10 keV band is flat and a few other spectral features are suggested. The large EW of the Fe K line poses a problem with interpreting the hard X-ray emission as integrated X-ray binary emission. A thermal emission spectrum with a temperature of kT~7 keV modified by some absorption, which would be expected from an internally shocked hot bubble in a starburst region, can describe the spectrum. An ensemble of radio supernovae in a dens…
Complete samples of ultraluminous infrared galaxies have been imaged at R-band and K-band from Mauna Kea. Here we present a preliminary analysis of the host galaxy magnitudes and the 1-D radial profiles for a subset of objects in the IRAS 1-Jy sample of ULIGs (z < 0.3), and compare these properties with recently published data for "low-z" QSOs. ULIGs in the 1-Jy sample reside in luminous hosts, with mean luminosities 2.7L* at K-band (range 0.7-11 L*) and 2.2L* at R-band (range 0.5-9 L*), values that are remarkably similar in the mean and range for the hosts of low-z QSOs. Approximately one-thi…
