Using the highly inhomogeneous fields of a magnetic substrate, tunable junctions between superconducting and normal state regions were created inside a thin film superconductor. The investigation of these junctions, created in the same material, gave evidence for the occurrence of Andreev reflection, indicating the high transparency of interfaces between superconducting and normal state regions. For the realization of this study, a ferromagnet with magnetic stripe domains was used as a substrate, on top of which a superconducting transport bridge was prepared perpendicular to the underlying domains. The particular choice of materials allowed to restrict the nucleation of superconductivity to regions above either reverse-domains or domain walls. Moreover, due to the specific design of the sample, transport currents in the superconductor passed through a sequence of normal and superconducting regions.
We study the current-phase relation of a ballistic SIFIT junction, consisting of a spin-singlet superconductor (S), a weak ferromagnetic metal (F), a spin-triplet superconductor (T), and insulating ferromagnetic interfaces (I). We use the generalized quasiclassical formalism developed by A. Millis et al. to compute the current density and the free energy of the junction for arbitrary orientation of the magnetizations of the junction barrier. We investigate in detail the effect of the distribution of magnetization on the various harmonics of the current-phase relation and the transition of the …
Interfaces between materials with differently ordered phases present unique opportunities for exotic physical properties, especially the interplay between ferromagnetism and superconductivity in the ferromagnet/superconductor heterostructures. The investigation of zero- and pi-junctions has been of particular interest for both fundamental physical science and emerging technologies. Here, we report the experimental observation of giant oscillatory Gilbert damping in the superconducting Nb/NiFe/Nb junctions with respect to the NiFe thickness. This observation suggests an unconventional spin pump…
Complex oxides exhibit a variety of unusual physical properties, which can be used for designing novel electronic devices. Here we fabricate and study experimentally nano-scale Superconductor/ Ferromagnet/Superconductor junctions with the high-Tc cuprate superconductor YBa2Cu3O7 and the colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) manganite ferromagnets LaXMnO3 (X: Ca or Sr). We demonstrate that in a broad temperature range the magnetization of a manganite nanoparticle, forming the junction interface, switches abruptly in a mono-domain manner. The CMR phenomenon translates the magnetization loop into a hys…
We study the transport properties of a diffusive Josephson junction between two spin-split superconductors made of superconductor-ferromagnetic insulator bilayers (FIS) on top of a 3D topological insulator (TI). We derive the corresponding Usadel equation describing the quasiclassical Green's functions in these systems and first solve the equation analytically in the weak-proximity case. We demonstrate the appearance of an anomalous phase in the absence of an external magnetic field. We also explore non-reciprocal electronic transport. Specifically, we calculate the junction's diode efficiency…
Junction systems of odd-frequency (OF) superconductors are investigated based on a mean-field Hamiltonian formalism. One-dimensional two-channel Kondo lattice (TCKL) is taken as a concrete example of OF superconductors. Properties of normal and Andreev reflections are examined in a normal metal/superconductor junction. Unlike conventional superconductors, normal reflection is always present due to the normal self energy that necessarily appears in the present OF pairing state. The conductance reflects the difference between repulsive and attractive potentials located at the interface, which is…
Superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor Josephson junctions are known to exist in the $0$ and $π$ states with the transitions between them controlled by the temperature and ferromagnetic interlayer thickness. We demonstrate that these transitions can be controlled also by the external magnetic field directed perpendicular to the layers. By varying the ratio of diffusion coefficients in superconducting and ferromagnetic layers, these field-controlled transitions can be made detectable for arbitrary large value of the exchange energy in the ferromagnet. We also show that the $0$-$π$ transition…
We study discrete symmetries satisfied by helical $p$-wave superconductors with d-vectors $k_{x}\hat{x}\pm k_{y}\hat{y}$ or $k_{y}\hat{x}\pm k_{x}\hat{y}$ and transformations brought by the symmetry operations to ferromagnet and spin-singlet superconductors, which show intimate associations with transport properties in heterojunctions including helical superconductor. Especially, the partial symmetries of the Hamiltonian under the spin-rotation and gauge-rotation operations are responsible for novel invariances of the conductance in tunnel junctions and new selection rules of the lowest curren…
We study theoretically the effects of interfacial Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling in superconductor/ferromagnet/superconductor (S/F/S) Josephson junctions---with allowing for tunneling barriers between the layers---by solving the Bogoljubov-de Gennes equation for a realistic heterostructure and applying the Furusaki-Tsukada technique to calculate the electric current at a finite temperature. The presence of spin-orbit couplings leads to out- and in-plane magnetoanisotropies of the Josephson current, which are giant in comparison to current magnetoanisotropies in similar normal-state…
We study the Josephson effect in spin-singlet superconductor/helical $p$-wave superconductor junctions with a ferromagnetic barrier using the quasiclassical Green function method. It is found that both $\sinϕ$-type and $\cosϕ$-type current-phase relations always exist, irrespective of the gap symmetries in superconductors. The indispensable condition for the $\sinϕ$-type and $\cosϕ$-type current is that the magnetization must have a component parallel to the crystallographic $a$ or $b$ axis, which is distinct from the case of $p$-wave superconductor described by a $\vect{d}$-vector with a unif…
Interfacial spin-orbit coupling in Josephson junctions offers an intriguing way to combine anomalous Hall and Josephson physics in a single device. We study theoretically how the superposition of both effects impacts superconductor/ferromagnetic insulator/superconductor junctions' transport properties. Transverse momentum-dependent skew tunneling of Cooper pairs through the spin-active ferromagnetic insulator interface creates sizable transverse Hall supercurrents, to which we refer as anomalous Josephson Hall effect currents. We generalize the Furusaki-Tsukada formula, which got initially est…
We propose a novel type of magnetic scanning probe sensor, based on a single planar Josephson junction with a magnetic barrier. The planar geometry together with high magnetic permeability of the barrier helps to focus flux in the junction and thus enhance the sensitivity of the sensor. As a result, it may outperform equally sized SQUID both in terms of the magnetic field sensitivity and the spatial resolution in one scanning direction. We fabricate and analyze experimentally sensor prototypes with a superparamagnetic CuNi and a ferromagnetic Ni barrier. We demonstrate that the planar geometry…
We investigate the effects of Andreev bound states due to the unconventional pairing on the inverse proximity effect of ferromagnet/superconductor junctions. Utilizing quasiclassical Eilenberger theory, we obtain the magnetization penetrating into the superconductor. We show that in a wide parameter range the direction of the induced magnetization is determined by two factors: whether Andreev bound states are present at the junction interface and the sign of the spin-mixing angle. In particular, when Andreev bound states appear at the interface, the direction of the induced magnetization is op…
We highlight the reproducibility and level of control over the electrical properties of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ Josephson junctions fabricated with irradiation from a focused helium ion beam. Specifically, we show the results of electrical transport properties for several junctions fabricated using a large range of irradiation doses. At the lower end of this range, junctions exhibit superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) Josephson junction properties. However, as dose increases there is a transition to electrical characteristics consistent with superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS…
