Recent preliminary results from the PAMELA experiment indicate the presence of an excess of cosmic ray positrons above 10 GeV. In this letter, we consider possibility that this signal is the result of dark matter annihilations taking place in the halo of the Milky Way. Rather than focusing on a specific particle physics model, we take a phenomenological approach and consider a variety of masses and two-body annihilation modes, including W+W-, ZZ, b bbar, tau+ tau-, mu+ mu-, and e+e. We also consider a range of diffusion parameters consistent with current cosmic ray data. We find that a significant upturn in the positron fraction above 10 GeV is compatible with a wide range of dark matter annihilation modes, although very large annihilation cross sections and/or boost factors arising from inhomogeneities in the local dark matter distribution are required to produce the observed intensity of the signal. We comment on constraints from gamma rays, synchrotron emission, and cosmic ray antiproton measurements.
The precise measurements of energy spectra of cosmic ray positrons and/or electrons by recent experiments show clear excesses above 10 GeV. Moreover, a potential sharp spectral feature was suggested by the Dark Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) data. These results inspire quite a number of discussions on the connection with either the annihilation/decay of dark matter (DM) or the astrophysical origins. Here we discuss a DM scenario in which DM particles could annihilate and decay into standard model particle pairs simultaneously. In this model, the peak structure is due to the DM annihilation i…
The excess of cosmic-ray electron and positron fluxes measured by the PAMELA satellite and ATIC balloon experiments may be interpreted as the signals of the dark matter annihilation or decay into leptons. In this letter we show that the dark matter annihilation/decay which reproduces the electron/positron excess may yield a significant amount of high-energy neutrinos from the Galactic center. In the case, future kilometer-square size experiments may confirm such a scenario, or even the Super-Kamiokande results already put constraints on some dark matter models.
We study the annihilating dark matter contribution to the extra-galactic diffuse gamma-ray background spectrum, motivated by the recent observations of cosmic-ray positron/electron anomalies. The observed diffuse gamma-ray flux provides stringent constraint on dark matter models and we present upper bounds on the annihilation cross section of the dark matter. It is found that for the case of cored dark matter halo profile, the diffuse gamma-rays give more stringent bound compared with gamma-rays from the Galactic center. The Fermi satellite will make the bound stronger.
We propose two-loop neutrino mass model with gauged hidden $U(1)$ symmetry, and discuss a Majorana type of dark matter candidate that has semi-annihilation processes in the relic density as well as lepton flavor violations and muon anomalous magnetic moment. Also, we demonstrate global analysis to satisfy neutrino oscillation data, lepton flavor violations, and relic density of dark matter candidate and show that semi-annihilation modes play a crucial role in finding observed relic density.
We demonstrate that the recent measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon and dark matter can be simultaneously explained within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. Dark matter is a mostly-bino state, with the relic abundance obtained via co-annihilations with either the sleptons or wino. The most interesting regions of parameter space will be tested by the next generation of dark matter direct detection experiments.
We discuss the possibility of solving the inverse problem of the cosmic-ray electron/positron from decaying/annihilating dark matter, and show simple analytic formulae to reconstruct the source spectrum of the electron/positron from the observed flux. We also illustrate our approach by applying the obtained formula to the just released Fermi data as well as the new HESS data.
Semi-annihilation is a generic feature of dark matter theories with symmetries larger than Z2. We investigate two examples with multi-component dark sectors comprised of an SU(2)L singlet or triplet fermion besides a scalar singlet. These are respectively the minimal fermionic semi-annihilating model, and the minimal case for a gauge-charged fermion. We study the relevant dark matter phenomenology, including the interplay of semi-annihilation and the Sommerfeld effect. We demonstrate that semi-annihilation in the singlet model can explain the gamma ray excess from the galactic center. For the …
Recently many investigations have considered Majorana dark matter co-annihilating with bound states formed by a strongly interacting scalar field. However only the gluon radiation contribution to bound state formation and dissociation, which at high temperatures is subleading to soft 2->2 scatterings, has been included. Making use of a non-relativistic effective theory framework and solving a plasma-modified Schrodinger equation, we address the effect of soft 2->2 scatterings as well as the thermal dissociation of bound states. We argue that the mass splitting between the Majorana and scalar f…
Semi-annihilation is a generic feature of dark matter theories stabilised by symmetries larger than a $Z_2$. It contributes to thermal freeze out, but is irrelevant for direct and collider searches. This allows semi-annihilating dark matter to avoid those limits in a natural way. We use an effective operator approach to make the first model-independent study of the associated phenomenology. We enumerate all possible operators that contribute to $2\to2$ semi-annihilation up to dimension 6, plus leading terms at dimension 7. We find that when the only light states charged under the dark symmetry…
Semi-annihilation is a generic feature of dark matter theories with symmetries larger than Z_2. We explore a model based on a Z_4-symmetric dark sector comprised of a scalar singlet and a "wino"-like fermion SU(2)_L triplet. This is the minimal example of semi-annihilation with a gauge-charged fermion. We study the interplay of the Sommerfeld effect in both annihilation and semi-annihilation channels. The modifications to the relic density allow otherwise-forbidden regions of parameter space and can substantially weaken indirect detection constraints. We perform a parameter scan and find that …
We perform a comprehensive dark matter analysis of left-right supersymmetric scenarios that includes constraints from dark matter direct and indirect detection experiments and that presents distinctive features from those available in minimal supersymmetry. We concentrate on dark matter candidates which, while satisfying all constraints, are different from those of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. We consider in our analysis all possible co-annihilation channels relevant for setups in which several states are light and nearly degenerate, and devise a set of representative benchmark p…
Recent PAMELA data show that positron fraction has an excess above several GeV while anti-proton one is not. Moreover ATIC data indicates that electron/positron flux have a bump from 300 GeV to 800 GeV. Both annihilating dark matter (DM) with large boost factor and decaying DM with the life around $ 10^{26} s$ can account for the PAMELA and ATIC observations if their main final products are charged leptons ($e$, $μ$ and $τ$). In this work, we calculated the neutrino flux arising from $μ$ and $τ$ which originate from annihilating/decaying DM, and estimated the final muon rate in the neutrino te…
Semi-annihilation is a generic feature of particle dark matter that is most easily probed by cosmic ray experiments. We explore models where the semi-annihilation cross section is enhanced at late times and low temperatures by the presence of an s-channel resonance near threshold. The relic density is then sensitive to the evolution of the dark matter temperature, and we compute expressions for the associated Boltzmann equation valid in general semi-annihilating models. At late times, a self-heating effect warms the dark matter, allowing number-changing processes to remain effective long after…
There is evidence for a spectral line at $E_γ\approx 130$ GeV in the Fermi-LAT data that can be explained as dark mater particles annihilating into photons. We review a well known dark matter model that consists in a singlet Dirac fermion and a singlet scalar. The scalar implements spontaneous symmetry breaking in the dark sector, and is responsible for the communication between dark matter and Standard Model particles through a coupling to the Higgs. These interactions are supressed by the mixing between the scalar and the Higgs. Therefore, the singlet fermionic dark matter is naturally a wea…
Dark matter annihilations have been fiercely restricted by the non-observation of excess events in indirect detection probes. Typically the interactions that dictate annihilation are also present in the dark matter-nucleon scattering cross section, also severely constrained by direct detection experiments. Semi-annihilations arise as a possible way to ameliorate the tension and even change the standard dark matter relic density calculation. In this work, we derive indirect detection bounds for several semi-annihilation channels including gauge bosons, the Higgs, leptophilic and leptophobic sca…
Antimatter cosmic-rays are used to probe new phenomena in physics, including dark matter annihilation. We use the cosmic-ray positron fraction spectrum by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, to search for such an annihilation signal in the Galaxy. We focus on dark matter with mass between 5 and 120 GeV, producing high-energy electrons and positrons. In these cosmic-ray energies the interplay of multiple astrophysical sources and phenomena, makes this search highly sensitive to the underlying astrophysical background assumptions. We use a vast public library of astrophysical models for the cosmic-…
Recently two groups independently observed unidentified X-ray line signal at the energy 3.55 keV from the galaxy clusters and Andromeda galaxy. We show that this anomalous signal can be explained in annihilating dark matter model, for example, fermionic dark matter model in hidden sector with global $U(1)_X$ symmetry proposed by Weinberg. There are two scenarios for the production of the annihilating dark matters. In the first scenario the dark matters with mass 3.55 keV decouple from the interaction with Goldstone bosons and go out of thermal equilibrium at high temperature ($>$ 1 TeV) when t…
Recent measurements of cosmic-ray electron and positron fluxes by PAMELA and ATIC experiments may indicate the existence of annihilating dark matter with large annihilation cross section. We discuss its possible relation to other astrophysical/cosmological observations : gamma-rays, neutrinos, and big-bang nucleosynthesis. It is shown that they give stringent constraints on some annihilating dark matter models.
Recently the AMS-02 experiment reported an excess of cosmic ray antiprotons over the expected astrophysical background. We interpret the excess as a signal from annihilating or decaying dark matter and find that the observed spectrum is well fitted by adding contributions from the annihilation or decay of dark matter with mass of O(TeV) or larger. Interestingly, Wino dark matter with mass of around 3 TeV, whose thermal relic abundance is consistent with present dark matter abundance, can explain the antiproton excess. We also discuss the implications for the decaying gravitino dark matter with…
Recently reported tentative evidence for a gamma-ray line in the Fermi-LAT data is of great potential interest for identifying the nature of dark matter. We compare the implications for decaying and annihilating dark matter taking the constraints from continuum gamma-rays, antiproton flux and morphology of the excess into account. We find that higgsino and wino dark matter are excluded, also for nonthermal production. Generically, the continuum gamma-ray flux severely constrains annihilating dark matter. Consistency of decaying dark matter with the spatial distribution of the Fermi-LAT excess …
Recent radio observations have obtained stringent constraints for annihilating dark matter. In this article, we use the radio continuum spectral data of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) to analyze the dark matter annihilation signals. We have discovered a slightly positive signal of dark matter annihilation with a $1.5σ$ statistical significance. The overall best-fit dark matter mass is $m_{\rm DM} \approx 90$ GeV, annihilating via $b\bar{b}$ channel. We have also constrained the $3σ$ lower limits of dark matter mass with the standard thermal dark matter annihilation cross section for the $e^+…
Recent gamma-ray and radio studies have obtained some stringent constraints on annihilating dark matter properties. However, only a few studies have focussed on using X-ray data to constrain annihilating dark matter. In this article, we perform the X-ray analysis of annihilating dark matter using the data of the Omega Centauri cluster. If dark matter is the correct interpretation of the non-luminous mass component derived in the Omega Centauri cluster, the conservative lower limits of thermal dark matter mass annihilating via the $τ^+τ^-$, $b\bar{b}$ and $W^+W^-$ channels can be significantly …
We discuss the cosmic ray spectra in annihilating/decaying Nambu-Goldstone dark matter models. The recent observed positron/electron excesses at PAMELA and Fermi experiments are well fitted by the dark matter with a mass of 3TeV for the annihilating model, while with a mass of 6 TeV for the decaying model. We also show that the Nambu-Goldstone dark matter models predict a distinctive gamma-ray spectrum in a certain parameter space.
Dark matter annihilation is proportional to the square of the density and is especially efficient in places of highest concentration of dark matter, such as dark matter spikes. The spikes are formed as a result of contraction of the dark matter density profile caused by adiabatic growth of a supermassive black hole at the center of the dark matter halo or subhalo. We revisit the relation between the properties and mass functions of dark matter halos and spikes, and propose alternative models for the density spikes that can potentially contribute to the isotropic gamma-ray background.
In this paper we show that positron data from AMS seems to rule out the explanation of the ARCADE isotropic radio background excess in terms of self-annihilating dark matter. In earlier works it was found that leptonic annihilation channels of light dark matter provide a good fit to the excess due to synchrotron emission of the final state particles. However, limits on the self-annihilation cross-section derived from the positron data of AMS now severely constrain light self-annihilating dark matter and cross-sections below that of a thermal relic are already tested for leptonic annihilation c…
We study the dark matter from an inert doublet and a complex scalar singlet stabilized by $\mathbb{Z}_N$ symmetries. This field content is the minimal one that allows dimensionless semi-annihilation couplings for $N > 2$. We consider explicitly the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ and $\mathbb{Z}_4$ cases and take into account constraints from perturbativity, unitarity, vacuum stability, necessity for the electroweak $\mathbb{Z}_N$ preserving vacuum to be the global minimum, electroweak precision tests, upper limits from direct detection and properties of the Higgs boson. Co-annihilation and semi-annihilation o…
The thermal production mechanism of dark matter is attractive and well-motivated by predictivity. A representative of this type of dark matter candidate is the canonical, weakly interacting massive particles. An alternative is semi-annihilating dark matter, which exhibits different phenomenological aspects from the former example. In this study, we constructed a model of dark matter semi-annihilating into a pair of anti-dark matter and a Majoron based on a global $U(1)_{B-L}$ symmetry, and show that semi-annihilation induces the core formation of dark matter halos, which can alleviate the so-c…
Recently the PAMELA satellite-based experiment reported an excess of galactic positrons that could be a signal of annihilating dark matter. The PAMELA data may admit an interpretation as a signal from a wino-like LSP of mass about 200 GeV, normalized to the local relic density, and annihilating mainly into W-bosons. This possibility requires the current conventional estimate for the energy loss rate of positrons be too large by roughly a factor of five. Data from anti-protons and gamma rays also provide tension with this interpretation, but there are significant astrophysical uncertainties ass…
Dark matter particles annihilating in the Galactic halo can provide a flux of positrons potentially observable in upcoming experiments, such as PAMELA and AMS-02. We discuss the spectral features which may be associated with dark matter annihilation in the positron spectrum and assess the prospects for observing such features in future experiments. Although we focus on some specific dark matter candidates, neutralinos and Kaluza-Klein states, we carry out our study in a model independent fashion. We also revisit the positron spectrum observed by HEAT.
The purpose of line-intensity mapping (IM), an emerging tool for extragalactic astronomy and cosmology, is to measure the integrated emission along the line of sight from spectral lines emitted from galaxies and the intergalactic medium. The observed frequency of the line then provides a distance determination allowing the three-dimensional distribution of the emitters to be mapped. Here we discuss the possibility to use these measurements to seek radiative decays or annihilations from dark-matter particles. The photons from monoenergetic decays will be correlated with the mass distribution, w…
Monochromatic gamma ray lines have long been known to provide potential smoking gun signals for annihilating dark matter. Here, we demonstrate that the situation is particularly interesting for Kaluza-Klein dark matter because resonant annihilation is generically expected for small, but not necessarily vanishing relative velocities of the annihilating particles. We calculate the contribution from those hitherto neglected resonances and show that the annihilation rate into monochromatic photons can be significantly enhanced, in a way that is much more pronounced than for the associated producti…
We propose different scenarios where a keV dark matter annihilates to produce a monochromatic signal. The process is generated through the exchange of a light scalar of mass of order 300 keV - 50 MeV coupling to photon through loops or higher dimensional operators. For natural values of the couplings and scales, the model can generate a gamma-ray line which can fit with the recently identified 3.5 keV X-ray line.
Grand unified theories based on large groups (with rank greater or equal to 6 are a natural context for dark matter models. They contain Standard-Model-singlet fermions that could be dark matter candidates, and can contain new non-abelian interactions whose sphalerons convert baryons, leptons, and dark matter into each other, "cogenerating" a dark matter asymmetry comparable to the baryon asymmetry. In this paper it is shown that the same non-abelian interactions can "pre-annihilate" the symmetric component of heavy dark matter particles, which then decay late into light stable dark matter par…
The relic abundance of particle and antiparticle dark matter (DM) need not be vastly different in thermal asymmetric dark matter (ADM) models. By considering the effect of a primordial asymmetry on the thermal Boltzmann evolution of coupled DM and anti-DM, we derive the requisite annihilation cross section. This is used in conjunction with CMB and Fermi-LAT gamma-ray data to impose a limit on the number density of anti-DM particles surviving thermal freeze-out. When the extended gamma-ray emission from the Galactic Center is reanalyzed in a thermal ADM framework, we find that annihilation into…
A number of groups have employed radio observations of the Galactic center to derive stringent constraints on the annihilation cross section of weakly interacting dark matter. In this paper, we show that electron energy losses in this region are likely to be dominated by inverse Compton scattering on the interstellar radiation field, rather than by synchrotron, considerably relaxing the constraints on the dark matter annihilation cross section compared to previous works. Strong convective winds, which are well motivated by recent observations, may also significantly weaken synchrotron constrai…
We compute the cross-sections for the radiative capture of non-relativistic particles into bound states, in unbroken perturbative non-Abelian theories. We find that the formation of bound states via emission of a gauge boson can be significant for a variety of dark matter models that feature non-Abelian long-range interactions, including multi-TeV scale WIMPs, dark matter co-annihilating with coloured partners and hidden-sector models. Our results disagree with previous computations, on the relative sign of the Abelian and non-Abelian contributions. In particular, in the case of capture of a p…
We investigate the invisible decay of positronium to probe the fermionic light dark matter mediated by the dark $Z$ boson. Too tiny is the invisible decay rate of positronium through weak interaction in the standard model to be detected in the experiment. We show that it can be enhanced to be observed in the future if the dark matter is lighter than the electron in the dark $Z$ model. We also compute the relic abundance of such light dark matter and discuss the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis constraint with an alternative thermal history scenario.
We used a consistent and robust solar model to obtain upper limits placed by neutrino telescopes, such as Ice- Cube and Super-Kamiokande, on the Dark Matter-nucleon scattering cross-section, for a general model of Dark Matter with a velocity dependent (p-wave) thermally averaged cross-section. In this picture, the Boltzmann equation for the Dark Matter abundance is numerically solved satisfying the Dark Matter density measured from the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). We show that for lower cross-sections and higher masses, the Dark Matter annihilation rate drops sharply, resulting in upper …
We analytically compute the effects that a mass variation rate \dot M/M of a pulsar may have on the changes Δτin the times of arrival of its pulses due to test particle companions, and on their orbital dynamics. We apply our results to the planetary system of the PSR B1257+12 pulsar, located in the Galaxy at 600 pc from us, to phenomenologically constrain a putative accretion of non-annihilating dark matter on the hosting neutron star. (Abridged)
We consider a dark sector consisting of dark matter that is a Dirac fermion and a scalar mediator. This model has been extensively studied in the past. If the scalar couples to the dark matter in a parity conserving manner then dark matter annihilation to two mediators is dominated by the P-wave channel and hence is suppressed at very low momentum. The indirect detection constraint from the anisotropy of the Cosmic Microwave Background is usually thought to be absent in the model because of this suppression. In this letter we show that dark matter annihilation to bound states occurs through th…
One aim of cosmic ray measurements is the search for possible signatures of annihilating or decaying dark matter. The so-called positron excess has attracted a lot of attention in this context. On the other hand it has been proposed that the data might challenge the established diffusion model for cosmic ray propagation. We investigate an inhomogeneous diffusion model by solving the corresponding equations analytically. Depending on the propagation parameters we find that the spectral features of the positron spectrum are affected significantly. We also discuss the influence of the inhomogenei…
Recently the PAMELA experiment has released its updated anti-proton flux and anti-proton to proton flux ratio data up to energies of ~200GeV. With no clear excess of cosmic ray anti-protons at high energies, one can extend constraints on the production of anti-protons from dark matter. In this letter, we consider both the cases of dark matter annihilating and decaying into standard model particles that produce significant numbers of anti-protons. We provide two sets of constraints on the annihilation cross-sections/decay lifetimes. In the one set of constraints we ignore any source of anti-pro…
Dark and baryonic matter contribute comparable energy density to the present Universe. The dark matter may also be responsible for the cosmic positron/electron excesses. We connect these phenomena with Dirac seesaw for neutrino masses. In our model (i) the dark matter relic density is a dark matter asymmetry generated simultaneously with the baryon asymmetry so that we can naturally understand the coincidence between the dark and baryonic matter; (ii) the dark matter mostly decays into the leptons so that its decay can interpret the anomalous cosmic rays with positron/electron excesses.
With the measurement of positron flux published recently by AMS-02 collaboration, we show how the leptophilic dark matter fits the observation. We obtain the percentages of different products of dark matter annihilation that can best describe the flux of high energy positrons observed by AMS. We show that dark matter annihilates predominantly into $ττ$ pair, while both $ee$ and $μμ$ final states should be less than $20\%$. When gauge boson final states are included, the best branching ratio of needed $ττ$ mode reduces.
Baryon interactions with bosonic dark matter are constrained by the potential for dark matter-rich neutron stars to collapse into black holes. We consider the effect of dark matter self-interactions and dark matter annihilation on these bounds, and treat the evolution of the black hole after formation. We show that, for non-annihilating dark matter, these bounds extend up to $m_X \sim 10^{5-7}$ GeV, depending on the strength of self-interactions. However, these bounds are completely unconstraining for annihilating bosonic dark matter with an annihilation cross-section of $<σ_a v> \gtrsim 10^{-…
We study dark matter (DM) models in which there are two dark sector particles, $χ_1$ and $χ_2$, of near mass. In such models, co-annihilation of $χ_1$ and $χ_2$ may be the dominant process controlling the DM relic density during freezeout in the early universe. In this scenario, there is no significant contribution to direct and indirect detection signals, unless there exists an extreme degeneracy in the masses of the lightest dark sector particles. Therefore, relic density constraints and collider searches provide the most relevant information about these models. We consider Dirac fermion dar…
We consider the diffuse gamma ray data from FERMI first year observations and compare them to the gamma ray fluxes predicted by Dark Matter annihilation or decay (both from prompt emission and from Inverse Compton Scattering), for different observation regions of the sky and a range of Dark Matter masses, annihilation/decay channels and Dark Matter galactic profiles. We find that the data exclude large regions of the Dark Matter parameter space not constrained otherwise and discuss possible directions for future improvements. Also, we further constrain Dark Matter interpretations of the e+e- P…
Observations by ARCADE-2 and other telescopes sensitive to low frequency radiation have revealed the presence of an isotropic radio background with a hard spectral index. The intensity of this observed background is found to exceed the flux predicted from astrophysical sources by a factor of approximately 5-6. In this article, we consider the possibility that annihilating dark matter particles provide the primary contribution to the observed isotropic radio background through the emission of synchrotron radiation from electron and positron annihilation products. For reasonable estimates of the…
The recent data from PAMELA and Fermi-LAT can be interpreted as evidence of new astrophysical sources of high energy positrons. In that case, such astrophysical positrons constitute an additional background against the positrons from dark matter annihilation. In this paper, we study the effect of that background on the prospects for the detection of a positron dark matter signal in future experiments. In particular, we determine the new regions in the (mass, $\sigmav$) plane that are detectable by the AMS-02 experiment for several dark matter scenarios and different propagation models. We find…
