We provide a study of the supersymmetric Adler--Bardeen anomaly in the $\N=1, d=4,6,10$ super-Yang--Mills theories. We work in the component formalism that includes shadow fields, for which Slavnov--Taylor identities can be independently set for both gauge invariance and supersymmetry. We find a method with improved descent equations for getting the solutions of the consistency conditions of both Slavnov--Taylor identities and finding the local field polynomials for the standard Adler--Bardeen anomaly and its supersymmetric counterpart. We give the explicit solution for the ten-dimensional case.
The Adler-Bardeen theorem has been proved only as a statement valid at all orders in perturbation theory, without any control on the convergence of the series. In this paper we prove a nonperturbative version of the Adler-Bardeen theorem in $d=2$ by using recently developed technical tools in the theory of Grassmann integration.
The proof of the non-renormalization theorem for the gauge anomaly of four-dimensional theories is extended to the case of models with a vanishing one-loop gauge beta function.
We consider a QED$_{d+1}$, $d=1,3$ lattice model with emergent Lorentz or chiral symmetry, both when the interaction is irrelevant or marginal. While the correlations present symmetry breaking corrections, we prove that the Adler-Bardeen (AB) non-renormalization property holds at a non-perturbative level even at finite lattice: all radiative corrections to the anomaly are vanishing. The analysis uses a new technique based on the combination of non-perturbative regularity properties obtained by exact renormalization Group methods and Ward Identities. The AB property, essential for the renormali…
We reconsider the Adler-Bardeen theorem for the cancellation of gauge anomalies to all orders, when they vanish at one loop. Using the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism and combining the dimensional-regularization technique with the higher-derivative gauge invariant regularization, we prove the theorem in the most general perturbatively unitary renormalizable gauge theories coupled to matter in four dimensions, and identify the subtraction scheme where anomaly cancellation to all orders is manifest, namely no subtractions of finite local counterterms are required from two loops onwards. Our approac…
We consider the Adler-Bardeen anomaly of the U(1) axial current in abelian and non-abelian gauge theories and present its algebraic characterization as well as an explicit evaluation proving regularization scheme independence of the anomaly. By extending the gauge coupling to an external space-time dependent field we get a unique definition for the quantum corrections of the topological term. It also implies a simple proof of the non-renormalization theorem of the Adler-Bardeen anomaly. We consider local gauge couplings in supersymmetric theories and find that there the renormalization of the …
We prove the Adler-Bardeen theorem in a large class of general gauge theories, including nonrenormalizable ones. We assume that the gauge symmetries are general covariance, local Lorentz symmetry and Abelian and non-Abelian Yang-Mills symmetries, and that the local functionals of vanishing ghost number satisfy a variant of the Kluberg-Stern--Zuber conjecture. We show that if the gauge anomalies are trivial at one loop, for every truncation of the theory there exists a subtraction scheme where they manifestly vanish to all orders, within the truncation. Outside the truncation the cancellation o…
In this paper we provide detailed proofs for some of the uniqueness results presented in arXiv:1612.02797. We show that: (1) Yang-Mills and General Relativity tree-level amplitudes are completely determined by gauge invariance in $n-1$ particles, with minimal assumptions on the singularity structure, (2) scalar non-linear sigma model and Dirac-Born-Infeld tree-level amplitudes are fixed by imposing full locality and the Adler zero condition (vanishing in the single soft limit) on $n-1$ particles. We complete the proofs by showing uniqueness order by order in the single soft expansion for Yang-…
A gauge-fixing procedure for the Yang-Mills theory on an n-dimensional sphere (or a hypersphere) is discussed in a systematic manner. We claim that Adler's gauge-fixing condition used in massless Euclidean QED on a hypersphere is not conventional because of the presence of an extra free index, and hence is unfavorable for the gauge-fixing procedure based on the BRST invariance principle (or simply BRST gauge-fixing procedure). Choosing a suitable gauge condition, which is proved to be equivalent to a generalization of Adler's condition, we apply the BRST gauge-fixing procedure to the Yang-Mill…
We study the 2D Vector Meson model introduced by Thirring and Wess, that is to say the Schwinger model with massive photon and massless fermion. We prove, with a renormalization group approach, that the vector and axial Ward identities are broken by the Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly; and we rigorously establish three widely believed consequences: a) the interacting meson-meson correlation equals a free boson propagator, though the mass is additively renormalized by the anomaly; b) the anomaly is quadratic in the charge, in agreement with the Adler-Bardeen formula; c) the fermion-fermion correlatio…
We study the quantization of chiral QED by means of an extended Slavnov-Taylor (ST) identity under which an external source and the ghost field form a doublet. This ST identity incorporates the Adler-Bardeen anomaly. We prove that the cohomology classes of the extended classical linearized ST operator ${\cal S}'_0$ are modified with respect to the ones of the classical BRST differential in the FP neutral sector (physical observables). This provides a counterexample showing that the introduction of a doublet can modify the cohomology of the model, as a consequence of the fact that the counting …
The description of symmetry breaking proposed by K. Symanzik within the framework of renormalizable theories is generalized from the geometrical point of view. For an arbitrary compact Lie group, a soft breaking of arbitrary covariance, and an arbitrary field multiplet, the expected integrated Ward identities are shown to hold to all orders of renormalized perturbation theory provided the Lagrangian is suitably chosen. The corresponding local Ward identity which provides the Lagrangian version of current algebra through the coupling to an external, classical, Yang-Mills field, is then proved t…
Recently, Komargodski and Seiberg have proposed a new type of supercurrent multiplet which contains the energy-momentum tensor and the supersymmetry current consistently. In this paper we study quantum properties of the supercurrent in renormalizable field theories. We point out that the new supercurrent gives a quite simple resolution to the classic problem, called the anomaly puzzle, that the Adler-Bardeen theorem applied to an R-symmetry current is inconsistent with all order corrections to $β$ functions. We propose an operator equation for the supercurrent in all orders of perturbation the…
Tree-level scattering amplitudes for gravitons, gluons and Goldstone particles in any dimensions are strongly constrained by basic principles, and they are intimately related to each other via various relations. We study two types of "universal expansions" with respect to gauge bosons and Goldstone bosons: the former express tree amplitudes in Einstein gravity (Yang-Mills) as linear combinations of single-trace Einstein-Yang-Mills (Yang-Mills-$ϕ^3$) amplitudes with coefficients given by Lorentz products of polarizations and momenta; the latter express tree amplitudes in non-linear sigma model,…
We present a minimal version for the renormalization of softly broken Super-Yang-Mills theories using the extended model with a local gauge coupling. It is shown that the non-renormalization theorems of the case with unbroken supersymmetry are valid without modifications and that the renormalization of soft-breaking parameters is completely governed by the renormalization of the supersymmetric parameters. The symmetry identities in the present context are peculiar, since the extended model contains two anomalies: the Adler-Bardeen anomaly of the axial current and an anomaly of supersymmetry in…
We apply the holographic method to 5D gauge theories on the warped interval. Our treatment includes the scalars associated with the fifth gauge field component, which appear as 4D Goldstone bosons in the holographic effective action. Applications are considered to two classes of models in which these scalars play an important role. In the Composite-Higgs (and/or Gauge-Higgs Unification) scenario, the scalars are interpreted as the Higgs field and we use the holographic recipe to compute its one-loop potential. In AdS/QCD models, the scalars are identified with the mesons and we compute hologra…
We derive the full Wess-Zumino-Witten term of a gauged chiral lagrangian in D=4 by starting from a pure Yang-Mills theory of gauged quark flavor in a flat, compactified D=5. The theory is compactified such that there exists a B_5 zero mode, and supplemented with quarks that are ``chirally delocalized'' with q_L (q_R) on the left (right) boundary (brane). The theory then necessarily contains a Chern-Simons term (anomaly flux) to cancel the fermionic anomalies on the boundaries. The constituent quark mass represents chiral symmetry breaking and is a bilocal operator in D=5 of the form: \bar{q}_L…
A self-consistent Ansatz for a new sphaleron of SU(3) Yang-Mills-Higgs theory is presented. With a single triplet of Weyl fermions added, there exists, most likely, one pair of fermion zero modes, which is known to give rise to the non-Abelian (Bardeen) anomaly as a Berry phase. The corresponding SU(3) gauge field configuration could take part in the nonperturbative dynamics of Quantum Chromodynamics.
Using the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism, we study the Ward identities and the equations of gauge dependence in potentially anomalous general gauge theories, renormalizable or not. A crucial new term, absent in manifestly nonanomalous theories, is responsible for interesting effects. We prove that gauge invariance always implies gauge independence, which in turn ensures perturbative unitarity. Precisely, we consider potentially anomalous theories that are actually free of gauge anomalies thanks to the Adler-Bardeen theorem. We show that when we make a canonical transformation on the tree-level a…
As was discovered recently, 5-loop perturbative quenched QED approximation to the QED $β$-function consist from the rational term and the term proportional to $ζ(3)$-function. It is stressed, that this feature is also manifesting itself in the conformal invariant pqQED series for the 4-loop approximation to the anomalous mass dimension. The 4-loop pqQED expression for the singlet contribution into the Ellis-Jaffe polarized sum rule is obtained. It coincides with the similar approximation for the non-singlet coefficient function of Ellis-Jaffe sum rule and of Bjorken polarized sum rule. It is s…
