This work presents a review of the Standard Model sources of backgrounds to the search of supersymmetry signals. Depending on the specific model, typical signals may include jets, leptons, and missing transverse energy due to the escaping lightest supersymmetric particle. We focus on the simplest case of multijets and missing energy, since this allows us to expose most of the issues common to other more complex cases. The review is not exhaustive, and is aimed at collecting a series of general comments and observations, to serve as guideline for the process that will lead to a complete experimental determination of size and features of such SM processes.
We present here the results for Higgs and Supersymmetry prospective searches at the Large Hadron Collider. We show that for one year at high luminosity, Standard Model and MSSM Higgs should be observed within the theoretically expected mass range. MSUGRA and restricted phenomenological MSSM searches lead to discovery of up to 2.5 TeV squarks and gluinos.
Supersymmetry is perhaps most effectively probed at the Tevatron through production and decay of weak gauginos. Most of the analyses of weak gaugino observables require electrons or muons in the final state. However, it is possible that the gauginos will decay primarily to tau leptons, thus complicating the search for supersymmetry. The motivating reasons for high tau multiplicity final states are discussed in three approaches to supersymmetry model building: minimal supergravity, gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking, and more minimal supersymmetry. The concept of ``e/mu/tau candidate'' is in…
The physics potential of discovering and exploring supersymmetry at future e^+e^- linear colliders is reviewed. Such colliders are planned to start to operate at a center-of-mass energy of 500 GeV to 800 GeV, with a final energy of about 2 TeV expected. They are ideal facilities for the discovery of supersymmetric particles. High precision measurements of their properties and interactions will help to uncover the mechanism of supersymmetry breaking and will allow for tests of grand unification scenarios.
We discuss the origin of "focus points" in the scalar mass RGEs of the MSSM and their implications for collider searches. We present a new exact analytic solution to the homogeneous system of scalar mass RGEs in the MSSM for general $\tanβ$. This is then used to prove that the focus point for $m^2_{H_u}$ depends only on the value of the top Yukawa coupling at the {\em weak} scale (not its value at the GUT scale) and is independent of the bottom Yukawa coupling.
Recent results in the search for supersymmetry in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and sqrt(s) = 8 TeV by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the LHC are reviewed. After discussing features of inclusive analyses and the presentation of results, emphasis will be put on searches for the third generation squarks, on searches for gauginos, and on possible ways supersymmetry could escape the present analyses.
The sensitivity for CMS searches for supersymmetry is evaluated in the context of an upgraded LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 14 TeV and an integrated luminosity of 300 fb-1. Results for several key searches for supersymmetry are presented including direct and gluino-mediated stop and sbottom production and electroweak production of supersymmetric particles.
We study SO(10), SU(5) and flipped SU(5) GUT models with non-universal soft supersymmetry-breaking scalar masses, exploring how they are constrained by LHC supersymmetry searches and cold dark matter experiments, and how they can be probed and distinguished in future experiments. We find characteristic differences between the various GUT scenarios, particularly in the coannihilation region, which is very sensitive to changes of parameters. For example, the flipped SU(5) GUT predict the possibility of $\tilde{t}_1-χ$ coannihilation, which is absent in the regions of the SO(10) and SU(5) GUT par…
New and recent results on Supersymmetry searches are shown for the ATLAS and the CMS experiments. Analyses with about 36 fb$^{-1}$ are considered for searches concerning light squarks and gluinos, direct pair production of 3$^{rd}$ generation squarks, electroweak production of charginos, neutralinos, sleptons, R-parity violating scenarios and long-lived particles.
We present several strategies for searching for supersymmetry in dijet channels that do not explicitly invoke missing energy. Preliminary investigations suggest that signal-to-background ratios of at least 4--5 should be achievable at the LHC, with discovery possible for squarks as heavy as ~ 1.7 TeV.
Motivated by recent progress in experimental techniques of electric dipole moment (EDM) measurements, we study correlations between the neutron and electron EDMs in common supersymmetric models. These include minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) with small CP phases, mSUGRA with a heavy SUSY spectrum, the decoupling scenario and split SUSY. In most cases, the electron and neutron EDMs are found to be observable in the next round of EDM experiments. They exhibit certain correlation patterns. For example, if d_n ~ 10^{-27} e cm is found, d_e is predicted to lie in the range 10^{-28}-10^{-29} e cm.
This review summarizes the state of the art in searches for supersymmetry at colliders on the eve of the LHC era. Supersymmetry is unique among extensions of the standard model in being motivated by naturalness, dark matter, and force unification, both with and without gravity. At the same time, weak-scale supersymmetry encompasses a wide range of experimental signals that are also found in many other frameworks. We recall the motivations for supersymmetry and review the various models and their distinctive features. We then comprehensively summarize searches for neutral and charged Higgs boso…
We evaluate cross sections for $\eslt$, 1$\ell$ and various dilepton and multilepton event topologies that result from the simultaneous production of all sparticles at the Tevatron collider, both within the minimal model framework as well as in two different $R$-parity violating scenarios. Our analysis assumes that these $R$-violating couplings are small, and that their sole effect is to cause the lightest supersymmetric particle to decay inside the detector. We reassess future strategies for sparticle searches at the Tevatron, and quantify by how much the various signals for supersymmetry cou…
An overview of supersymmetry searches is presented, covering collider experiments, direct and indirect searches for supersymmetric dark matter. Recent LHC experimental results are reviewed, and the constraints from B-meson decays are reported. Implications for supersymmetry of the latest direct and indirect searches are thoroughly discussed. The focus is on the complementarity of the various probes -- particle and astrophysical -- for constraining Supersymmetry.
We propose a search for direct production and decay of the lightest supersymmetric Higgs boson to two neutralinos in gauge mediated models at the Fermilab Tevatron. We focus on the final state where each neutralino decays to photon and light gravitino with a lifetime of order O(ns). In the detector this will show up as a photon with a time-delayed signature and missing E_T. We estimate that using the photon timing system at CDF, and the full 10/fb data sample, that the sensitivity can be within a factor of three in some regions of parameter space for direct production of the Higgs.
The strong constraints on the R-parity conserving supersymmetry (SUSY) from the LHC searches motivate us to consider the new models in which the low-scale SUSY is still allowed. We propose a kind of R-parity violating SUSY scenarios with a non-zero $U^c_2 D^c_2 D^c_3$ operator. Three relevant LHC searches are recasted to test the status of this scenario in terms of four simplified models, with either light stop-Bino, stop-Higgsino, sbottom-Bino or sbottom-Higgsino. Some difficult scenarios for the LHC SUSY searches in these simplified models are identified. By extrapolate the current LHC searc…
We investigate the prospects of supersymmetry searches at the LHC with 7 TeV energy. A new set of selection cuts is proposed based on event shapes to control backgrounds. Our preliminary studies show that it is possible to minimize backgrounds to a significantly low level and conservative estimate suggests that the mass reach can be extended to $\sim$ 1.1 TeV for luminosity 1/fb with a reasonable signal-to-background ratio.
After a very successful startup of the LHC in 2010, the CMS experiment has already accumulated significantly more data in 2011. After the successful re-discovery of the Standard Model, the search for signs of new physics has already reached, and in most cases enlarged, the limits from previous experiments. In this conference report I review the recent discovery reach of SUSY searches that will be performed with the 2011 data.
In Stealth Supersymmetry, bounds on superpartners from direct searches can be notably weaker than in standard supersymmetric scenarios, due to suppressed missing energy. We present a set of simplified models of Stealth Supersymmetry that motivate 13 TeV LHC searches. We focus on simplified models within the Natural Supersymmetry framework, in which the gluino, stop, and Higgsino are assumed to be lighter than other superpartners. Our simplified models exhibit novel decay patterns that differ significantly from topologies of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, with and without $R$-parity…
We review some recent results and future prospects in the phenomenology of Supersymmmetry. We discuss the searches for superpartner states, the searches for Higgs bosons in the minimal SUSY model, and additional parameter constraints arising in SUSY-GUT models.
We discuss the prospects for searches of low-energy supersymmetry in the time interval separating us from the advent of LHC. In this period of time "indirect" searches may play a very relevant role. We refer to manifestations of supersymmetry in flavour changing neutral current and CP violating phenomena and to signals of the lightest supersymmetric particle in searches of dark matter. In the first part of the talk we critically review the status of the minimal supersymmetric model to discuss the chances that direct and indirect supersymmetric searches may have before the LHC start. In the sec…
Experiments at particle colliders have reached center of mass energies well above 100 GeV, equivalent to temperatures which existed shortly after the big bang. These experiments, testing the initial conditions of the universe have, with great precision, established the Standard Model of Particle Physics. In contrast, the existence of the Higgs boson and perhaps Supersymmetry remain speculative, as todays searches have failed to find signs of their existence. However, the next generation of high energy collider experiments and especially CERN's 14 TeV LHC, expected to start operation in the yea…
Searches for supersymmetry (SUSY) at the LHC frequently assume the conservation of $R$-parity in their design, optimization and interpretation. In the case that $R$-parity is not conserved, constraints on SUSY particle masses tend to be weakened with respect to $R$-parity-conserving models. We review the current status of searches for $R$-parity-violating (RPV) supersymmetry models at the ATLAS and CMS experiments, limited to 8 TeV search results published or submitted for publication as of the end of March 2015. All forms of renormalisable RPV terms leading to prompt signatures have been cons…
We investigate FASER@LHC perspectives in searches for light ($0.1-5$ GeV) sgoldstinos in models with low energy ($10-10^4$ TeV) supersymmetry breaking. We consider flavor conserving and flavor violating couplings of sgoldstinos to Standard Model fermions and find the both options to be testable at FASER. Even the first FASER run allows one to probe interesting patches in the model parameter space, while the second run, FASER-II, with significantly larger detector fiducial volume, gives a possibility to thoroughly explore a wide class of supersymmetric extensions of particle physics complementa…
Supersymmetry may be discovered at high energy colliders, through low energy precision measurements, and by dark matter searches. We present a comprehensive analysis of all available probes in minimal supergravity. This work extends previous analyses by including the focus point branch of parameter space and the full array of promising indirect dark matter searches. We find that particle and astrophysical searches underway are highly complementary: each separately provides only partial coverage of the available parameter space, but together they probe almost all models. Cosmology does {\em not…
The results from the CMS search for supersymmetric particles based on Run-2 data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV are summarized. Strong and weak production of SUSY scenarios are considered. Results presented include the searches for squarks and gluinos, direct production of charginos, neutralinos, and sleptons. These searches involve final state objects comprising jets, missing transverse momentum, electrons or muons, taus or photons, as well as long-lived particles. The data in these searches are found to be consistent with standard model predictions and no significant excess is…
If supersymmetry is broken at TeV scale, particles from sector responsible for supersymmetry breaking - goldstino and sgoldstinos - can reveal themselves already at the LHC experiments. We discuss bounds on supersymmetry breaking scale from the LHC searches for events with a jet plus missing momentum signature focusing on the case of TeV scale sgoldstinos. We show that contribution of light sgoldstinos to the cross section of of gravitino pair production with a jet can be sizable and the bounds on the gravitino mass can be stronger by up to a factor of 2 as compared to those obtained in the he…
Among the theories beyond the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics Supersymmetry (SUSY) provides an excellent dark matter (DM) candidate, the neutralino. One clear prediction of cosmology is the annihilation cross section of DM particles, assuming them to be a thermal relic from the early universe. In most of the parameter space of Supersymmetry the annihilation cross section is too small compared with the prediction of cosmology. However, for large values of the tan beta parameter the annihilation through s-channel pseudoscalar Higgs exchange yields the correct relic density in practically…
The motivations for low-energy supersymmetry and the main features of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model are reviewed. Possible non-minimal models and the issue of gauge coupling unification are also discussed. Theoretical results relevant for supersymmetric particle searches at present and future accelerators are presented, with emphasis on the role of a proposed $\epem$ collider with $\sqrt{s} = 500 \gev$. In particular, recent results on radiative corrections to supersymmetric Higgs boson masses and couplings are summarized, and their implications for experimental se…
The combined constraints from six early Run 2 ATLAS searches for supersymmetry are interpreted in the phenomenological minimal supersymmetric extension to the Standard Model (pMSSM). Each of the searches was based on proton-proton collision data recorded in 2015 at $\sqrt{s} =13$ TeV with 3.2 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. Sensitivity to squarks of the first two generations and gluinos are evaluated using fast detector simulation. Results are presented in the 19-parameter R-parity conserving pMSSM with the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) being the neutralino. Considering 181.8k poi…
In this paper we explore the constraints from B-physics observables in SUSY models of Minimal Flavor Violation, in the large tan beta regime, for both low and high scale supersymmetry breaking scenarios. We find that the rare B-decays b -> s gamma and B_s -> mu+ mu- can be quite sensitive to the scale M at which supersymmetry breaking is communicated to the visible sector. In the case of high scale supersymmetry breaking, we show that the additional gluino contribution to the b -> s gamma and B_s -> mu+ mu- rare decay rates can be significant for large tan beta, mu and M_3. The constraints on …
We review constraints on the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM) coming from direct searches at accelerators such as LEP, indirect measurements such as b -> s gamma decay and the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. The recently corrected sign of pole light-by-light scattering contributions to the latter is taken into account. We combine these constraints with those due to the cosmological density of stable supersymmetric relic particles. The possible indications on the supersymmetric mass scale provided by fine-tuning arguments are reviewed critically. We discuss b…
After a quick review of the framework for phenomenological analyses of supersymmetry, we summarize current limits on supersymmetric particle masses and discuss strategies for their searches at the Fermilab Tevatron and the LHC. We also discuss the sense in which such searches as well as those that may be carried out at LEP complement one another. Finally, we touch upon the prospects for more ambitious measurements such as those of sparticle masses and couplings. Such measurements could (a) help pin down model parameters, (b) perhaps, serve to test our ideas of physics at very high energy, and …
We study the production and decays of top squarks (stops) at the Tevatron collider in models of low-energy supersymmetry breaking. We consider the case where the lightest Standard Model (SM) superpartner is a light neutralino that predominantly decays into a photon and a light gravitino. Considering the lighter stop to be the next-to-lightest Standard Model superpartner, we analyze stop signatures associated with jets, photons and missing energy, which lead to signals naturally larger than the associated SM backgrounds. We consider both 2-body and 3-body decays of the top squarks and show that…
A light singlino in the NMSSM can reduce considerably the missing transverse energy at the end of sparticle decay cascades; instead, light NMSSM-specific Higgs bosons can be produced. Such scenarios can be consistent with present constraints from the LHC with all sparticle masses below ~1 TeV. We discuss search strategies, which do not rely on missing transverse energy, for such scenarios at the next run of the LHC near 14 TeV.
Assuming that the actual values of the top quark mass at FNAL and of the ratio of partial widths Z->bb/Z->hadrons at LEP are within their current one-sigma reported ranges, we present a No-Lose Theorem for superpartner searches at LEP II and an upgraded Tevatron. We impose only two theoretical assumptions: the Lagrangian is that of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with arbitrary soft-breaking terms, and all couplings remain perturbative up to scales of order 10^16 GeV; there are no assumptions about the soft SUSY breaking parameters, proton decay, cosmology, etc. In particular, if the…
The purely leptonic rare decay Bs -> mu+mu- is very sensitive to supersymmetric contributions which are free from the helicity suppression of its Standard Model diagrams. The recent observation of the decay by the LHCb experiment and the first determination of its branching fraction motivate a review of their impact on the viable parameter space of supersymmetry. In this paper we discuss the implications of the present and expected future accuracy on BR(Bs -> mu+mu-) for constrained and unconstrained MSSM scenarios, in relation to the results from direct SUSY searches and the Higgs data at the…
Inspired by the phenomenological constraints, LHC supersymmetry and Higgs searches, dark matter search as well as string model building, we propose the electroweak supersymmetry around the electroweak scale: the squarks and/or gluinos are around a few TeV while the sleptons, sneutrinos, bino and winos are within one TeV. The Higgsinos can be either heavy or light. We consider bino as the dominant component of dark matter candidate, and the observed dark matter relic density is achieved via the neutralino-stau coannihilations. Considering the Generalized Minimal Supergravity (GmSUGRA), we show …
The Run 2 data taking period of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in years 2015-2018 has presented a great opportunity to search for physics beyond the standard model (BSM). It will be followed by the Run 3 period starting in 2022, and by the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) era starting in late 2020s, where the latter promises an unprecedented wealth of physics prospects due to very high expected integrated luminosity and improved detector features. The ATLAS, CMS and LHCb experiments pursued a rich physics program in Run 2, and are already assessing the physics expectations at the HL-LHC e…
The focus point region of supersymmetric models is compelling in that it simultaneously features low fine-tuning, provides a decoupling solution to the SUSY flavor and CP problems, suppresses proton decay rates and can accommodate the WMAP measured cold dark matter (DM) relic density through a mixed bino-higgsino dark matter particle. We present the focus point region in terms of a weak scale parameterization, which allows for a relatively model independent compilation of phenomenological constraints and prospects. We present direct and indirect neutralino dark matter detection rates for two d…
The lightest neutralino in supersymmetric models with conserved R-parity is an attractive candidate for non-luminous matter in the universe. If relic neutralinos are indeed present as dark matter in our galaxy, they can be directly detected in scattering experiments. This could serve as an independent search channel for supersymmetry complementary to collider experiments. I compare the sensitivity of direct detection experiments with the reach for supersymmetry at collider facilities in the framework of the minimal supergravity model.
We analyze the implications of the new physics effect seen in the $g-2$ Brookhaven measurement and show that if the effect arises from supersymmetry, then the sign of the Higgs mixing parameter $μ$ is determined to be positive in the standard sign convention. Further, analyses within the minimal supergravity model show that the Brookhaven result leads to upper limits on the universal gaugino and scalar masses of $m_{1/2}\leq 800$ GeV and $m_0\leq 1.5$ TeV for $\tanβ\leq 55$. Our analysis strongly suggests that supersymmetry via production of sparticles must be found at the Large Hadron Collide…
The ATLAS and CMS experiments did not find evidence for Supersymmetry using close to 5/fb of published LHC data at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. We combine these LHC data with data on B_s -> mu mu (LHCb experiment), the relic density (WMAP and other cosmological data) and upper limits on the dark matter scattering cross sections on nuclei (XENON100 data). The excluded regions in the constrained Minimal Supersymmetric SM (CMSSM) lead to gluinos excluded below 1270 GeV and dark matter candidates below 220 GeV for values of the scalar masses (m_0) below 1500 GeV. For large m_0 values the limi…
An important tool for interpreting LHC searches for new physics are simplified models. They are characterized by a small number of parameters and thus often rely on a simplified description of particle production and decay dynamics. Considering the production of squarks of the first two generations we compare the interpretation of current LHC searches for hadronic jets plus missing energy signatures within simplified models with the interpretation within a complete supersymmetric model. Although we find sizable differences in the signal efficiencies, in particular for large supersymmetric part…
Squarks and gluinos have been searched for at hadron colliders in events with multiple jets and missing transverse energy. No excess has been observed to date, and from a comparison of experimental cross section limits and theoretical cross section predictions one can deduce lower bounds on the squark and gluino masses. We present an improved analysis of squark and gluino mass bounds which is based on state-of-the-art cross section calculations including the summation of large threshold corrections. For illustration, we consider experimental data obtained by the CDF collaboration at the Fermil…
Martin has proposed a scenario dubbed ``compressed supersymmetry'' (SUSY) where the MSSM is the effective field theory between energy scales M_{\rm weak} and M_{\rm GUT}, but with the GUT scale SU(3) gaugino mass M_3<< M_1 or M_2. As a result, squark and gluino masses are suppressed relative to slepton, chargino and neutralino masses, leading to a compressed sparticle mass spectrum, and where the dark matter relic density in the early universe may be dominantly governed by neutralino annihilation into ttbar pairs via exchange of a light top squark. We explore the dark matter and collider signa…
The second period of datataking at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has provided a large dataset of proton-proton collisions that is unprecedented in terms of its centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and integrated luminosity of almost 140 fb$^{-1}$. These data constitute a formidable laboratory for the search for new particles predicted by models of supersymmetry. The analysis activity is still ongoing, but a host of results on supersymmetry has already been released by the general purpose LHC experiments ATLAS and CMS. In this paper, we provide a map into this remarkable body of research, which sp…
We study the interplay of natural supersymmetry and a supersymmetric solution to the discrepancy observed in measurements of the muon magnetic moment. The strongest constraints on the parameter space currently come from chargino searches in the trilepton channel and slepton searches in the dilepton channel at the LHC, and vast regions are currently allowed, especially at large $\tanβ$. With light top squarks in the spectrum, as required from naturalness arguments, the situation changes dramatically; stop-assisted chargino and neutralino production via $\tilde{t} \rightarrow b \tildeχ_{1}^{\pm}…
This study provides a brief overview of low-energy supersymmetry (SUSY) in light of current experimental constraints, such as collider searches, dark matter searches, and muon $g-2$ measurements. In addition, we survey a variety of low energy supersymmetric models: the phenomenological minimal supersymmetric model (MSSM); the supersymmetric models with cut-off-scale boundary conditions, i.e., the minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) or the constrained MSSM (CMSSM), the gauge mediation of SUSY breaking (GMSB), and the anomaly mediation of SUSY breaking (AMSB), as well as their extensions. The conclusi…
In a variety of supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model, the scalar partners of the quarks and leptons are predicted to be very heavy and beyond the reach of next-generation colliders. For instance, the realization of electroweak baryogenesis in supersymmetry requires new sources of CP-violation, which can only be naturally accommodated with electric dipole moment constraints if the first and second generation scalar fermions are beyond the TeV scale. Also in focus-point supersymmetry and split supersymmetry the scalar fermions are very heavy. In this work, the phenomenology of scenari…
We briefly review the current status and future prospects for supersymmetry searches at colliders, and discuss strategies by which further information about sparticle properties may be obtained at the LHC.
Natural realisations of supersymmetry require light stops ${\tilde t}_1$, making them a prime target of LHC searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. Depending on the kinematic region, the main search channels are ${\tilde t_1}\to t \tilde χ^0_1$, ${\tilde t_1}\to W b \tilde χ^0_1$ and ${\tilde t_1}\to c \tilde χ^0_1$. We first examine the interplay of these decay modes with ${\tilde c_1}\to c \tilde χ^0_1$ in a model-independent fashion, revealing the existence of large regions in parameter space which are excluded for any ${\tilde t_1}\to c \tilde χ^0_1$ branching ratio. This effect is…
Uncovering the physics of electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) is the raison-d'etre of the LHC. Flavor questions, it would seem, are of minor relevance for this quest, apart from their role in constraining the possible structure of EWSB physics. In this short review article, we outline, using flavor-dependent sleptons as an example, how flavor can affect both searches for supersymmetry, and future measurements aimed at understanding the nature of any new discoveries. If the production cross-sections for supersymmetry are relatively low, as indicated by the fact that it has not revealed itself …
Some doubts have been expressed about low energy supersymmetry (SUSY) following the first run of the LHC. In this talk I will try to present a more upbeat view based on data, rather than theoretical expectations. In particular, I will make the following points: (a) in my opinion the most attractive candidate for dark matter (DM) is now the lightest neutralino with mass around 1 TeV and with well defined properties (a nearly pure higgsino). This follows primarily from a combination of the properties of the discovered Higgs boson, in particular its mass close to 125 Gev, and the relic density of…
We compare the first results on searches for supersymmetry with the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) to the current and near-term performance of experiments sensitive to neutralino dark matter. We limit our study to the particular slices of parameter space of the constrained minimal supersymmetric extension to the Standard Model where CMS and ATLAS exclusion limits have been presented so far. We show where, on that parameter space, the lightest neutralino possesses a thermal relic abundance matching the value inferred by cosmological observations. We then calculate rates for, and estimate the perfo…
The absence so far of any supersymmetric signals at the LHC pushes towards a rethinking of the assumptions underlying the MSSM. Because the large missing $E_T$ searches are inadequate to detect a LSP decaying within the detector, R-parity violating supersymmetry is still a good candidate for low energy, natural supersymmetry. We show that, in Froggatt-Nielsen-like models of horizontal symmetries, specific textures for the R-parity violating couplings are dictated by the symmetry, with the largest coupling involving the third generation fields. Lepton number can be an accidental symmetry of the…
We extend our investigation of backgrounds to new physics signals, following CMS's data-driven search for supersymmetry at the LHC. The aim is to use different sets of cuts in gamma + 3-jet production to predict the irreducible Z + 3-jet background (with the Z boson decaying to neutrinos) to searches with missing transverse energy + 3-jet signal topologies. We compute ratios of Z + 3-jet to gamma + 3-jet production cross sections and kinematic distributions at next-to-leading order (NLO) in alpha_s. We compare these ratios with those obtained using a parton shower matched to leading-order matr…
Most ongoing supersymmetry searches have concentrated on the high-energy frontier. High-intensity fixed target beamlines, however, offer an opportunity to search for supersymmetric particles with long lifetimes and low cross-sections in regions complementary to the ones accessible to collider experiments. In this paper, we consider R-parity violating supersymmetry searches for the lightest neutralino and use the NuTeV experiment as an example for the experimental sensitivity which can be achieved.
