In this paper we study a deformation of gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking in a class of local F-theory GUT models where the scale of supersymmetry breaking determines the value of the mu term. Geometrically correlating these two scales constrains the soft SUSY breaking parameters of the MSSM. In this scenario, the hidden SUSY breaking sector involves an anomalous U(1) Peccei-Quinn symmetry which forbids bare mu and B mu terms. This sector typically breaks supersymmetry at the desired range of energy scales through a simple stringy hybrid of a Fayet and Polonyi model. A variant of the Giudice-Masiero mechanism generates the value mu ~ 10^2 - 10^3 GeV when the hidden sector scale of supersymmetry breaking is F^(1/2) ~ 10^(8.5) GeV. Further, the B mu problem is solved due to the mild hierarchy between the GUT scale and Planck scale. These models relate SUSY breaking with the QCD axion, and solve the strong CP problem through an axion with decay constant f_a ~ M_(GUT) * mu / L, where L ~ 10^5 GeV is the characteristic scale of gaugino mass unification in gauge mediated models, and the ratio μ/ L ~ M_(GUT)/M_(pl) ~ 10^(-3). We find f_a ~ 10^12 GeV, which is near the high end of the phenomenologically viable window. Here, the axino is the goldstino mode which is eaten by the gravitino. The gravitino is the LSP with a mass of about 10^1 - 10^2 MeV, and a bino-like neutralino is (typically) the NLSP with mass of about 10^2 - 10^3 GeV. Compatibility with electroweak symmetry breaking also determines the value of tan(beta) ~ 30 +/- 7.
We look for a connection between string theories and Grand Unified Theories (GUTs), with the aim to look for new insights in the existing four dimensional string-GUT problems. We argue that the construction of consistent string-GUT models could require the use of non canonical affine levels. We list the most common level values related to realistic GUTs.
We study in detail the structure of Grand Unified Theories derived as the low-energy limit of orbifold four-dimensional strings. To this aim, new techniques for building level-two symmetric orbifold theories are presented. New classes of GUTs in the context of symmetric orbifolds are then constructed. The method of permutation modding is further explored and SO(10) GUTs with both $45$ or $54$-plets are obtained. SU(5) models are also found through this method. It is shown that, in the context of symmetric orbifold $SO(10)$ GUTs, only a single GUT-Higgs, either a $54$ or a $45$, can be present …
We consider GUT models inspired by recent local F-theory constructions. We show that after switching on vevs to scalars the extra matter becomes messengers. We discuss conditions on these vevs under which the models do not lead to unacceptable baryon/lepton number violating processes.
Standard (level one) heterotic string models with standard model gauge group predict the unification of $SU(3)$ and $SU(2)$ gauge couplings whereas the $U(1)$ factor is unified modulo an unknown normalization factor $k_1$. On the other hand the unification mass is known. I argue that this situation is quite analogous (though opposite) to that in SUSY-GUTs in which the $U(1)$ normalization is known ($k_1=5/3$) but the unification mass $M_X$ is unknown. I emphasize that $k_1$ should be taken as a free parameter in the string approach (quite in the same way as $M_X$ is taken as a free parameter i…
This paper provides an overview to three recent papers on the bottom up approach to GUTs in F-theory. We assume only a minimal familiarity with string theory and phenomenology. After explaining the potential for predictive string phenomenology within this framework, we introduce the ingredients of F-theory GUTs, and show how these models naturally address various puzzles in four-dimensional GUT models. We next describe how supersymmetry is broken, and show that in a broad class of models, solving the mu/B mu problem requires a specific scale of supersymmetry breaking consistent with a particul…
We study the consequences of cancellation of cubic Abelian anomalies in F-theory GUT models that utilise hypercharge flux in the presence of additional U(1) symmetries. We show that a mixed anomaly between the hypercharge and two U(1) gauge fields is not automatically canceled in local models based on the spectral cover and therefore imposes additional constraints on local models in F-theory that have not been accounted for so far. The constraints imply that there are only two possible classes of models in F-theory GUTs which have fields on matter curves in non-complete GUT representations tha…
We calculate the proton lifetime and discuss topological defects in a wide class of non-supersymmetric (non-SUSY) $SO(10)$ and $E(6)$ Grand Unified Theories (GUTs), broken via left-right subgroups with one or two intermediate scales (a total of 9 different scenarios with and without D-parity), including the important effect of threshold corrections. By performing a goodness of fit test for unification using the two-loop renormalisation group evolution equations (RGEs), we find that the inclusion of threshold corrections significantly affects the proton lifetime, allowing several scenarios, whi…
Recent work on F-theory GUTs has shown that the predicted masses, and magnitudes of the mixing matrix elements in the quark and lepton sectors are in close accord with experiment. In this note we estimate the CP violating phase of the mixing matrices by considering the Jarlskog invariant. We find by carefully treating certain cancellations in the computation of the Jarlskog invariant that |J_quark| ~ alpha_GUT^(3) ~ 6*10^(-5), and that the CP violating phase of the quark sector is large, in accord with experiment. Moreover, we predict (up to order one factors) that |J_lepton| ~ alpha_GUT ~ 4*1…
We prove that it is impossible to construct a grand unified model, based on a simple gauge group, in four dimensions that leads to the exact MSSM, nor to a singlet extension, and possesses an unbroken R symmetry. This implies that no MSSM model with either a Z_{M>=3}^R or U(1)_R symmetry can be completed by a four-dimensional GUT in the ultraviolet. However, our no-go theorem does not apply to GUT models with extra dimensions. We also show that it is impossible to construct a 4D GUT that leads to the MSSM plus an additional anomaly-free symmetry that forbids the mu term.
The possibility of appearance of GUT precursors near the TeV scale (suggested by Dienes-Dudas-Gherghetta) is addressed within 5D GUTs compactified on an $S^{(1)}/Z_2\tm Z_2'$ orbifold. For a low compactification scale (large radius), there is a significant non universal logarithmic contribution in the relative running of gauge couplings. This within 5D SU(5), with the minimal field content, gives wrong prediction for $\al_3(M_Z)$ unless one goes beyond the minimal setting. The realization of the light precursors' idea thus requires some specific extensions. As a scenario alternative to SU(5) w…
We discuss the proton decay problem in theories with low gravity and/or GUT scales. We pointed out that the gravity induced proton decay can be indeed suppressed up to a desired level, while the GUT origin of the proton instability is rather problematic. To solve this problem we suggest the GUT model where the proton is stable in all orders of perturbation theory. This can be simply achieved by the replication of quark-lepton families with ordinary quarks and leptons residing in different GUT representations and by an appropriate dimensional reduction. The model predicts extra mirror states wh…
Standard SUSY-GUTs such as those based on $SU(5)$ or $SO(10)$ lead to predictions for the values of $α_s$ and $sin^2θ_W$ in amazing agreement with experiment. In this article we investigate how these models may be obtained from string theory, thus bringing them into the only known consistent framework for quantum gravity. String models with matter in standard GUT representations require the realization of affine Lie algebras at higher levels. We start by describing some methods to build level $k=2$ orbifold string models with gauge groups $SU(5)$ or $SO(10)$. We present several examples and id…
Noncommutative generalizations of Yang-Mills theories using Seiberg-Witten map are in general not unique. We study these ambiguities and see that SO(10) GUT, at first order in the noncommutativity parameter θ, is unique and therefore is a truly unified theory, while SU(5) is not. We then present the noncommutative Standard Model compatible with SO(10) GUT. We next study the reality, hermiticity and C,P,T properties of the Seiberg-Witten map and of these noncommutative actions at all orders in θ. This allows to compare the Standard Model discussed in [5] with the present GUT inspired one.
This paper studies F-theory SU(5) GUT models where the three generations of the standard model come from three different curves. All the matter is taken to come from curves intersecting at a point of enhanced E8 gauge symmetry. Giving a vev to some of the GUT singlets naturally implements a Froggatt-Nielsen approach to flavour structure. A scan is performed over all possible models and the results are filtered using phenomenological constraints. We find a unique model that fits observations of quark and lepton masses and mixing well. This model suffers from two drawbacks: R-parity must be impo…
D3-brane probes of exceptional Yukawa points in F-theory GUTs are natural hidden sectors for particle phenomenology. We find that coupling the probe to the MSSM yields a new class of N = 1 conformal fixed points with computable infrared R-charges. Quite surprisingly, we find that the MSSM only weakly mixes with the strongly coupled sector in the sense that the MSSM fields pick up small exactly computable anomalous dimensions. Additionally, we find that although the states of the probe sector transform as complete GUT multiplets, their coupling to Standard Model fields leads to a calculable thr…
We analyze the construction of non-supersymmetric three generation six-stack Pati-Salam (PS) $SU(4)_C \times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ GUT classes of models, by localizing D6-branes intersecting at angles in four dimensional orientifolded toroidal compactifications of type IIA. Special role in the models is played by the presence of extra branes needed to satisfy the RR tadpole cancellation conditions. The models contain at low energy {\em exactly the Standard model} with no extra matter and/or extra gauge group factors. They are build such that they represent deformations around the quark and l…
With the apparent discovery of the Higgs boson, the Standard Model has been confirmed as the theory accounting for all sub-atomic phenomena. This observation lends further credence to the perturbative unification in Grand Unified Theories (GUTs) and string theories. The free fermionic formalism yielded fertile ground for the construction of quasi--realistic heterotic--string models, which correspond to toroidal Z2xZ2 orbifold compactifications. In this paper we study a new class of heterotic-string models in which the GUT group is SU(6)xSU(2) at the string level. We use our recently developed …
Recent years have seen increased use of Bayesian model comparison to quantify notions such as naturalness, simplicity, and testability, especially in the area of supersymmetric model building. After demonstrating that Bayesian model comparison can resolve a paradox that has been raised in the literature concerning the naturalness of the proton mass, we apply Bayesian model comparison to GUTs, an area to which it has not been applied before. We find that the GUTs are substantially favored over the non-unifying puzzle model. Of the GUTs we consider, the $B-L$ MSSM GUT is the most favored, but th…
Report in extended abstract form. Based on talk given at Strings '95, Los Angeles, CA. This is a summary of the findings initially presented in hep-th/9505080. Results of a step (the complete classification of free fermionic solutions to $N=1$ spacetime) in the search for stringy three-generation SO(10) SUSY-GUTs are reviewed.
A new superstring-motivated framework for a treatment of SU(N) SUSY GUTs is argued. We show that all the present difficulties of the minimal supersymmetric SU(5) model can successfully be overcome with a new renormalizable reflection-invariant superpotential with two-adjoint scalars, one of which is interpreted as a massive string mode essentially decoupled from the low-energy particle spectra. This superpotential is proved to properly fix a mass ratio of the basic adjoint scalar moduli, while its gauge-type reflection symmetry essentially protects the model from gravitational smearing. The si…
We construct F-theory GUT models without exotic matter, leading to the MSSM matter spectrum with potential singlet extensions. The interplay of engineering explicit geometric setups, absence of four-dimensional anomalies, and realistic phenomenology of the couplings places severe constraints on the allowed local models in a given geometry. In constructions based on the spectral cover we find no model satisfying all these requirements. We then provide a survey of models with additional U(1) symmetries arising from rational sections of the elliptic fibration in toric constructions and obtain phe…
Grand Unified Theories (GUTs) are one of the most interesting high-energy completions of the Standard Model, because they provide a rich, powerful and elegant group-theoretical framework able to resolve a variety of problems remaining in our current understanding of particle physics. They usually act as motivators for many low energy BSM theories, such as left-right symmetric or supersymmetric models, and they serve to fill the gap between the experimentally reachable low energies and the physics in the ultraviolet. In recent years, however, they have fallen slightly from the spotlight, in fav…
We consider gauge coupling unification in E6 F-Theory Grand Unified Theories (GUTs) where E6 is broken to the Standard Model (SM) gauge group using fluxes. In such models there are two types of exotics that can affect gauge coupling unification, namely matter exotics from the matter curves in the 27 dimensional representation of E6 and the bulk exotics from the adjoint 78 dimensional representation of E6. We explore the conditions required for either the complete or partial removal of bulk exotics from the low energy spectrum. In the latter case we shall show that (miraculously) gauge coupling…
We consider realistic F-theory GUT models based on discrete family symmetries $A_4$ and $S_3$, combined with $SU(5)$ GUT, comparing our results to existing field theory models based on these groups. We provide an explicit calculation to support the emergence of the family symmetry from the discrete monodromies arising in F-theory. We work within the spectral cover picture where in the present context the discrete symmetries are associated to monodromies among the roots of a five degree polynomial and hence constitute a subgroup of the $S_5$ permutation symmetry. We focus on the cases of $A_4$ …
By employing D6-branes intersecting at angles in $D = 4$ type I strings, we construct {\em five stack} string GUT models (PS-II class), that contain at low energy {\em exactly the Standard model} with no extra matter and/or extra gauge group factors. These classes of models are based on the Pati-Salam (PS) gauge group $SU(4)_C \times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$. They represent deformations around the quark and lepton basic intersection number structure. The models possess the same phenomenological characteristics of some recently discussed examples (PS-A and PS-I class) of four stack PS GUTS. Name…
We study the constraints of supersymmetry on flavour in recently proposed models of F-theory GUTs. We relate the topologically twisted theory to the canonical presentation of eight-dimensional super Yang-Mills and provide a dictionary between the two. We describe the constraints on Yukawa couplings implied by holomorphy of the superpotential in the effective 4-dimensional supergravity theory, including the scaling with α_{GUT}. Taking D-terms into account we solve explicitly to second order for wavefunctions and Yukawas due to metric and flux perturbations and find a rank-one Yukawa matrix wit…
Cosmic strings of the GUT scale, generically formed during the SSB of supersymmetric hybrid inflation, are compatible with the most recent CMB data. The strong constraints on the allowed cosmic strings contribution to the measured temperature anisotropies impose limits on the free parameters of the inflationary models, namely the mass scales and the couplings.
Proton decay is a smoking gun signature of Grand Unified Theories (GUTs). Searches by Super-Kamiokande have resulted in stringent limits on the GUT symmetry breaking scale. The large-scale multipurpose neutrino experiments DUNE, Hyper-Kamiokande and JUNO will either discover proton decay or further push the symmetry breaking scale above $10^{16}$ GeV. Another possible observational consequence of GUTs is the formation of a cosmic string network produced during the breaking of the GUT to the Standard Model gauge group. The evolution of such a string network in the expanding Universe produces a …
We systematically construct a large number of compact Calabi-Yau fourfolds which are suitable for F-theory model building. These elliptically fibered Calabi-Yaus are complete intersections of two hypersurfaces in a six dimensional ambient space. We first construct three-dimensional base manifolds that are hypersurfaces in a toric ambient space. We search for divisors which can support an F-theory GUT. The fourfolds are obtained as elliptic fibrations over these base manifolds. We find that elementary conditions which are motivated by F-theory GUTs lead to strong constraints on the geometry, wh…
We discuss a global anomaly associated with the coupling of chiral Weyl fermions to gravity. The Standard Model based upon $SU(3){\times}SU(2){\times}{U(1)}$ which has 15 fermions per generation is shown to be inconsistent if all background spin manifolds with signature invariant $τ=8k$ are allowed. Similarly, GUTs based on odd number of Weyl fermions are inconsistent. Consistency can be achieved by adding an extra Weyl fermion which needs to couple only to gravity. For arbitrary $τ$'s, generalized spin structures are needed, and the global anomaly cancellation requires that the net index of t…
We study the structure of SU(5) F-theory GUT models that engineer additional U(1) symmetries. These are highly constrained by a set of relations observed by Dudas and Palti (DP) that originate from the physics of 4D anomaly cancellation. Using the DP relations, we find a general tension between unification and the suppression of dimension 5 proton decay when one or more U(1)'s are PQ symmetries and hypercharge flux is used to break the SU(5) GUT group. We then specialize to spectral cover models, whose global completions in F- theory we know how to construct. In that setting, we provide a tech…
We show that in F-theory GUTs, a natural explanation of flavor hierarchies in the quark and lepton sector requires a single point of E_8 enhancement in the internal geometry, from which all Yukawa couplings originate. The monodromy group acting on the seven-brane configuration plays a key role in this analysis. Moreover, the E_8 structure automatically leads to the existence of the additional fields and interactions needed for minimal gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking,__and almost nothing else__. Surprisingly, we find that in all but one Dirac neutrino scenario the messenger fields in the …
We study gauge threshold corrections for local GUT models in IIB/F-theory. Consistency with holomorphy requirements of supergravity and the Kaplunovsky-Louis formula implies that the unification scale is enhanced by the bulk radius R from the string scale to M_X =RM_S. We argue that the stringy interpretation of this is via a locally uncancelled tadpole sourced by the hypercharge flux. This sources closed string modes propagating into the bulk; equivalently open string gauge coupling running up to the winding scale M_X. The enhancement to R M_s is tied to GUT breaking by a globally trivial hyp…
Making use of toric geometry we construct a class of global F-theory GUT models. The base manifolds are blowups of Fano threefolds and the Calabi-Yau fourfold is a complete intersection of two hypersurfaces. We identify possible GUT divisors and construct SO(10) models on them using the spectral cover construction. We use a split spectral cover to generate chiral matter on the 10 curves in order to get more degrees of freedom in phenomenology. We use abelian flux to break SO(10) to SU(5)\times U(1) which is interpreted as a flipped SU(5) model. With the GUT Higgses in the SU(5)\times U(1) mode…
We construct a noncommutative version of a general renormalizable SO(10) GUT with Higgses in the 210, $\overline{126}, 45, 10$ and 120 irreps of SO(10) and a Peccei-Quinn symmetry. Thus, we formulate the noncommutative counterpart of a non-supersymmetric SO(10) GUT which has recently been shown to be consistent with all the physics below $M_{GUT}$. The simplicity of our construction --the simplicity of the Yukawa terms, in particular-- stems from the fact that the Higgses of our GUT can be viewed as elements of the Clifford algebra $\mathbb{C}\rm{l}_{10}(\mathbb{C})$; elements on which the SO(…
Working in the context of the Planck scale cosmology formulation of Bonanno and Reuter, we use our resummed quantum gravity approach to Einstein's general theory of relativity to estimate the value of the cosmological constant as $ρ_Λ=(0.0024 eV)^4$. We show that susy GUT models are constrained by the closeness of this estimate to experiment. We also address various consistency checks on the calculation. In particular, we use the Heisenberg uncertainty principle to remove a large part of the remaining uncertainty in our estimate of $ρ_Λ$
We study cosmic string formation within supersymmetric grand unified theories. We consider gauge groups having a rank between 4 and 8. We examine all possible spontaneous symmetry breaking patterns from the GUT down to the standard model gauge group. Assuming standard hybrid inflation, we select all the models which can solve the GUT monopole problem, lead to baryogenesis after inflation and are consistent with proton lifetime measurements. We conclude that in all acceptable spontaneous symmetry breaking schemes, cosmic string formation is unavoidable. The strings which form at the end of infl…
We analyze constraints for embedding local SU(5) F-theory GUTs into consistent compactifications and construct explicit three-generation models based on the geometry of arXiv:0904.3932. The key tool for studying constraints in this problem when there is an underlying E_8 structure is the spectral cover, which encodes all of the symmetries that fix the allowed couplings in the superpotential, as well as the consistent, supersymmetric G-fluxes. Imposing phenomenological requirements such as the existence of three generations, top and bottom Yukawa couplings, good flavor structure and absence of …
We systematically analyse globally consistent SU(5) GUT models on intersecting D7-branes in genuine Calabi-Yau orientifolds with O3- and O7-planes. Beyond the well-known tadpole and K-theory cancellation conditions there exist a number of additional subtle but quite restrictive constraints. For the realisation of SU(5) GUTs with gauge symmetry breaking via U(1)_Y flux we present two classes of suitable Calabi-Yau manifolds defined via del Pezzo transitions of the elliptically fibred hypersurface P_{1,1,1,6,9}[18] and of the Quintic P_{1,1,1,1,1}[5], respectively. To define an orientifold proje…
