We use measurements of luminosity-dependent galaxy bias at several different redshifts, SDSS at $z=0.05$, DEEP2 at $z=1$ and LBGs at $z=3.8$, combined with WMAP five-year cosmic microwave background anisotropy data and SDSS Red Luminous Galaxy survey three-dimensional clustering power spectrum to put constraints on cosmological parameters. Fitting this combined dataset, we show that the luminosity-dependent bias data that probe the relation between halo bias and halo mass and its redshift evolution are very sensitive to sum of the neutrino masses: in particular we obtain the upper limit of $\sum m_ν<0.28$eV at the 95% confidence level for a $ΛCDM + m_ν$ model, with a $σ_8$ equal to $σ_8=0.759\pm0.025$ (1$σ$). When we allow the dark energy equation of state parameter $w$ to vary we find $w=-1.30\pm0.19$ for a general $wCDM+m_ν$ model with the 95% confidence level upper limit on the neutrino masses at $\sum m_ν<0.59$eV. The constraint on the dark energy equation of state further improves to $w=-1.125\pm0.092$ when using also ACBAR and supernovae Union data, in addition to above, with a prior on the Hubble constant from the Hubble Space Telescope.
Using the UVES echelle spectrograph at the ESO VLT we obtained high-resolution (R = 40 000) spectra of the object SDSS J1553+0056, which has been identified in the literature alternatively as a high-redshift quasar or as a Lyman-break galaxy (LBG). Although low-resolution spectra of SDSS J1553+0056 closely resemble those of LBGs, our high-resolution spectra allow us to identify this object unambiguously as a LoBAL quasar, probably belonging to the rare FeLoBALQSO class. Based on our spectrum we discuss how misidentifications of such objects from low-resolution spectra can be avoided.
Thomson scattering of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) on moving electrons in the outflows of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at redshifts 2-8 contributes to the small-scale CMB anisotropies. The net effect produced by each outflow depends on its level of deviation from spherical symmetry, caused either by an anisotropic energy injection from the nuclear starburst or quasar activity, or by an inhomogeneous intergalactic environment. We find that for plausible outflow parameters consistent with spectroscopic observations of LBGs, the induced CMB anisotropies on arcminute scales reach up to $\s…
We constrain the spectrum of primordial curvature perturbations by using recent Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and Large Scale Structure (LSS) data. Specifically, we consider CMB data from the COBE, Boomerang and Maxima experiments, the real space galaxy power spectrum from the IRAS PSCz survey, and the linear matter power spectrum inferred from Ly-alpha forest spectra. We study the case of single field slow roll inflationary models, and we extract bounds on the scalar spectral index, n, the tensor to scalar ratio, r, and the running of the scalar spectral index, dlnk, for various combinati…
The optical properties of a number of supercompact ultraviolet luminous galaxies (UVLG), recently discovered in the local Universe matching GALEX and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data, are discussed. Detailed re-analysis of the SDSS data for these and other similar but nearer galaxies shows that their surface brightness radial profile in both R and u bands is in most cases well described by an extended disk plus a central unresolved component (possibly a bulge). Since the SDSS pipeline used a single disk component to derive the half light radius of these UVLGs their size was severely undere…
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey has discovered a z=2.4917 radio-loud active galactic nucleus (AGN) with a luminous, variable, low-polarization UV continuum, H I two-photon emission, and a moderately broad Lyman-alpha line (FWHM = 1430 km/s) but without obvious metal-line emission. SDSS J113658.36+024220.1 does have associated metal-line absorption in three distinct, narrow systems spanning a velocity range of 2710 km/s. Despite certain spectral similarities, SDSS J1136+0242 is not a Lyman-break galaxy. Instead, the Ly-alpha and two-photon emission can be attributed to an extended, low-metallicity…
We report on the discovery of a bright Lyman alpha blob associated with the z=3 quasar SDSSJ124020.91+145535.6 which is also coincident with strong damped Lyman alpha absorption from a foreground galaxy (a so-called proximate damped Lyman alpha system; PDLA). The one dimensional spectrum acquired by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) shows a broad Lyman alpha emission line with a FWHM ~ 500 km/s and a luminosity of L_{Lya} = 3.9e43 erg/s superposed on the trough of the PDLA. Mechanisms for powering this large Lyman alpha luminosity are discussed. We argue against emission from HII regions in …
(abridged) The flux power spectrum of the Lyman-alpha forest in quasar (QSO) absorption spectra is sensitive to a wide range of cosmological and astrophysical parameters and instrumental effects. Modelling the flux power spectrum in this large parameter space to an accuracy comparable to the statistical uncertainty of large samples of QSO spectra is very challenging. We use here a coarse grid of hydrodynamical simulations run with GADGET-2 to obtain a ``best guess'' model around which we calculate a finer grid of flux power spectra using a Taylor expansion of the flux power spectrum to first o…
The intergalactic neutral hydrogen which is responsible for the Lyman alpha forest of quasar absorption is a tracer of much larger amounts of ionised hydrogen. The ionised component has yet to be detected directly, but is expected to scatter CMB photons via the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect. We use hydrodynamic simulations of a LambdaCDM universe to create mock quasar spectra and CMB sky maps. We find that the high-z Lya forest gas causes temperature fluctuations of the order of 1 muK rms in the CMB on arcmin scales. The kinetic and thermal SZ effects have a similar magnitude at z=3, with the…
We use Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 2 QSO spectra to constrain the dust-reddening caused by intervening damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAs). Comparing the spectral index distribution of a 70 sight-line DLA sample with that of a large control sample reveals no evidence for dust-reddening at z~3. Our limit on the shift in spectral index, |Delta(alpha)| < 0.19 (3-sigma), corresponds to a limit on the colour excess due to SMC-like dust-reddening, E(B-V) < 0.02 mag (3-sigma). This is inconsistent with the early studies of Fall, Pei and collaborators who used the small QSO and DLA samples ava…
A bright quasar residing in a dense and largely neutral intergalactic medium (IGM) at high redshifts (z > 6) will be surrounded by a large cosmological Stromgren sphere. The quasar's spectrum will then show a sharp increase in resonant Lyman line absorption at wavelengths approaching and shorter than that corresponding to the Stromgren sphere's boundary along the line of sight. We show here that simultaneously considering the measured absorption in two or more hydrogen Lyman lines can provide the dynamical range required to detect this feature. We model broad and robust features of the Lyman a…
We present a sample of 33 damped Lyman alpha systems (DLAs) discovered in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) whose absorption redshifts (z_abs) are within 6000 km/s of the QSO's systemic redshift (z_sys). Our sample is based on 731 2.5 < z_sys < 4.5 non-broad-absorption-line (non-BAL) QSOs from Data Release 3 (DR3) of the SDSS. We estimate that our search is ~100 % complete for absorbers with N(HI) >= 2e20 cm^-2. The derived number density of DLAs per unit redshift, n(z), within v < 6000 km/s is higher (3.5 sigma significance) by almost a factor of 2 than that of intervening absorbers observe…
We allow a more general (step-function) form of the primordial power spectrum than the usual featureless power-law Harrison--Zeldovich (with spectral index n=1) power spectrum, and fit it to the latest Cosmic Microwave Background data sets. Although the best-fitting initial power spectrum can differ significantly from the power-law shape, and contains a bump at scales k ~ 0.003 h/Mpc, we find Omega_m to be approximately 0.24, consistent with previous analyses that assume power-law initial fluctuations. We also explore the feasibility of the 2dF and SDSS galaxy redshifts surveys to observe thes…
We report on the serendipitous discovery of the brightest Lyman Break Galaxy (LBG) currently known, a galaxy at z=2.73 that is being strongly lensed by the z=0.38 Luminous Red Galaxy (LRG) SDSS J002240.91+143110.4. The arc of this gravitational lens system, which we have dubbed the "8 o'clock arc" due to its time of discovery, was initially identified in the imaging data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4 (SDSS DR4); followup observations on the Astrophysical Research Consortium (ARC) 3.5m telescope at Apache Point Observatory confirmed the lensing nature of this system and led to …
Using Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) early data release spectra, we have identified 370 MgII absorption systems with MgII 2796 rest equivalent widths >= 1A and redshifts z=0.9-2.2. From our previous and ongoing HST UV spectroscopic studies, we estimate that the mean neutral hydrogen column density of a system selected in this manner is N(HI) = 3.6 +/- 1.3 x10^(20) atoms cm^(-2), which corresponds to the damped Ly-alpha (DLA) regime. We have formed high signal-to-noise ratio composite spectra using 223 of these systems with z=0.9-2.0 in order to study the strength of the ZnII and CrII absorpti…
A combined analysis of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and Lyman-a forest data allows to constrain the matter power spectrum from small scales of about 1 Mpc/h all the way to the horizon scale. The long lever arm and complementarity provided by such an analysis has previously led to a significant tightening of the constraints on the shape and the amplitude of the power spectrum of primordial density fluctuations. We present here a combined analysis of the WMAP three year results with Lyman-a forest data. The amplitude of the matter power spectrum sigma_8 and the spectral index ns inferred fr…
We report the discovery of a new Einstein cross at redshift z_S = 2.701 based on Lyman-alpha emission in a cruciform configuration around an SDSS luminous red galaxy (z_L = 0.331). The system was targeted as a possible lens based on an anomalous emission line in the SDSS spectrum. Imaging and spectroscopy from the W. M. Keck Observatory confirm the lensing nature of this system. This is one of the widest-separation galaxy-scale lenses known, with an Einstein radius of ~1.84 arcsec. We present simple gravitational lens models for the system and compute the intrinsic properties of the lensed gal…
We present results of our HST Cycle 11 Survey for low-redshift (z<1.65) DLAs in the UV spectra of quasars selected from the SDSS Early Data Release. These quasars have strong intervening MgII-FeII systems which are known signatures of high column density neutral gas. In total, UV observations of Ly-alpha absorption in 197 MgII systems with z<1.65 and rest equivalent width (REW) W2796 \ge 0.3A have now been obtained. The main results are: (1) 36(+/- 6)% of systems with W2796 \ge 0.5 A and FeII W2600 \ge 0.5 A are DLAs. This increases to 42(+/- 7)% for systems with W2796/W2600 < 2 and MgI W2852 …
We present constraints on the amplitude and shape of the matter power spectrum and the density of dark matter within the framework of a standard LambdaCDM model. We use a Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach to combine independent measurements of the three dimensional weak gravitational lensing shear field by the COSMOS survey, of low and high resolution Ly-alpha forest flux power spectrum by SDSS and LUQAS, and of Cosmic Microwave Background temperature and polarization anisotropies by WMAP. We note good agreement between the amplitude of the matter power spectrum on intermediate and small scale…
We study the complementarity between the cosmological information obtainable with the Planck surveyour and the large scale structure (LSS) redshift surveys in LambdaCHDM cosmologies. We compute the initial full phase-space neutrino distribution function for LambdaCHDM models by using numerical simulations. As initial condition we adopt the HDM density fluctuation power spectrum normalized on the basis of the analysis of the local cluster X-ray temperature function and derive the initial neutrino phase-space distribution at each spatial wave number k by using the Zel'dovich approximation. These…
Using cosmological hydrodynamic simulations we measure the mean transmitted flux in the Lyman alpha forest for quasar sightlines that pass near a foreground quasar. We find that the trend of absorption with pixel-quasar separation distance can be fitted using a simple power law form including the usual correlation function parameters r_{0} and γso that (<F(r)> = \sum exp(-tau_eff*(1+(r/r_{0})^(-γ)))). From the simulations we find the relation between r_{0} and quasar mass and formulate this as a way to estimate quasar host dark matter halo masses, quantifying uncertainties due to cosmological …
We present abundance measurements for two super Lyman Limit systems (SLLS; quasar absorption line systems with 10^19 cm^-2 < N_HI < 10^20.3 cm^-2) selected from a set of metal-strong absorbers in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey quasar database. After applying estimate corrections for photoionization effects, we derive gas-phase metallicities of [M/H]=+0.7 +/- 0.2 dex for the SLLS at z=1.7749 toward SDSS0927+5621 and [M/H]=+0.05 +/- 0.1 dex for the SLLS at z=1.7678 toward SDSS0953+5230. The former exhibits among the highest gas metallicity of any astrophysical environment and its total metal surfa…
{Abridged} We report the discovery of six compact, starburst galaxy candidates with redshifts 2.3 < z < 2.8 and r-band magnitudes 19.8-20.5 in the Quasar Catalog of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey First Data Release (SDSS DR1). The SDSS spectra of these objects resemble the composite spectrum of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z ~ 3 (albeit with some differences and broader spectral lines), but the systems are 4-5 magnitudes brighter than an ``L*'' LBG and 2-3 magnitudes brighter than the most luminous objects in typical LBG spectroscopic surveys. These objects could be extremely luminous LBGs, no…
We report coincident damped Lyman alpha (DLA) and sub-DLA absorption at z = 2.66 and z = 2.94 towards the z ~ 3 13.8 arcsecond separation binary quasar SDSS 1116+4118 AB. At the redshifts of the absorbers, this angular separation corresponds to a proper transverse separation of ~ 110 kpc. A third absorber, a sub-DLA at z = 2.47, is detected towards SDSS 1116+4118 B, but no corresponding high column density absorber is present towards SDSS 1116+4118 A. We use high resolution galaxy simulations and a clustering analysis to interpret the coincident absorption and its implications for galaxy struc…
We probe the scale dependence of the primordial spectrum in the light of the three-year WMAP (WMAP3) alone and WMAP3 in combination with the other cosmological observations such as galaxy clustering and Type Ia Supernova (SNIa). We pay particular attention to the combination with the Lyman $α$ (Ly$α$) forest. Different from the first-year WMAP (WMAP1), WMAP3's preference on the running of the scalar spectral index on the large scales is now fairly independent of the low CMB multipoles $\ell$. A combination with the galaxy power spectrum from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) prefers a negati…
The correlation between Lyman-alpha absorption in the spectra of quasar pairs can be used to measure the transverse distance scale at z~2, which is sensitive to the cosmological constant (Omega_Lambda) or other forms of vacuum energy. Using Hydro-PM simulations, I compute the three-dimensional power spectrum of the Lyman-alpha forest flux, P_F(k,mu), from which the redshift-space anisotropy of the correlation can be obtained. I find that box size ~40 Mpc/h and resolution ~40 Kpc/h are necessary for convergence of the calculations to <5% on all relevant scales, although somewhat poorer resoluti…
We present the first rest-frame ~4 micron detection of a Lyman break galaxy. The data were obtained using the 16 micron imaging capability of the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph. The target object, J134026.44+634433.2, is an extremely luminous Lyman break galaxy at z=2.79 first identified in Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectra (Bentz, Osmer, & Weinberg 2004). The source is strongly detected with a flux of 0.94 +/- 0.02 mJy. Combining Spitzer and SDSS photometry with supporting ground-based J- and K-band data, we show that the spectral energy distribution is consistent with an actively star-forming …
The chance projection of the disk of Mrk~1456 onto a background QSO is similar to the case of SBS 1543+593/HS 1543+5921. Mrk~1456 is a luminous, late-type spiral at z ~ 0.05. Though the QSO, SDSS J114719.90+522923.2 at z ~ 2, has not yet been observed with ultraviolet spectroscopy, it shows strong Ca II absorption at the redshift of Mrk 1456 which gives evidence that it is a possible Damped Lyman Alpha absorber. Spectroscopy of the star-forming nucleus of Mrk~1456 allows us to apply emission-line diagnostics to infer the chemical abundances at the center of the galaxy, and to make a prediction…
We report the results of a systematic search for signatures of metal lines in quasar spectra of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 3(DR3), focusing on finding intervening absorbers via detection of their OVI doublet. Here we present the search algorithm, and criteria for distinguishing candidates from spurious Lyman $α${} forest lines. In addition, we compare our findings with simulations of the Lyman $α${} forest in order to estimate the detectability of OVI doublets over various redshift intervals. We have obtained a sample of 1756 OVI doublet candidates with rest-frame equival…
We measure the cosmological matter density by observing the positions of baryon acoustic oscillations in the clustering of galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We jointly analyse the main galaxies and LRGs in the SDSS DR5 sample, using over half a million galaxies in total. The oscillations are detected with 99.74% confidence (3.0sigma assuming Gaussianity) compared to a smooth power spectrum. When combined with the observed scale of the peaks within the CMB, we find a best-fit value of Omega_m=0.256+0.029-0.024 (68% confidence interval), for a flat Lambda cosmology when marginalis…
Quasar absorption lines have long been recognized to be a sensitive probe of the abundances, physical conditions, and kinematics of gas in a wide variety of environments including low-density intergalactic regions that probably cannot be studied by any other means. While some pre-Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations indicated that Mg II absorption lines arise in gaseous galactic halos with a large covering factor, many early QSO absorber studies were hampered by a lack of information about the context of the absorbers and their connections with galaxies. By providing access to crucial ult…
In this paper we determine the constraints on cosmological parameters using the CMB data from the WMAP experiment together with the recent power spectrum measurement of the SDSS Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs). Specifically, we focus on spatially flat, low matter density models with adiabatic Gaussian initial conditions. The spatial flatness is achieved with an additional quintessence component whose equation of state parameter w_eff is taken to be independent of redshift. Throughout most of the paper we do not allow any massive neutrino contribution and also the influence of the gravitational wa…
We present the results from an automated search for damped Lya (DLA) systems in the quasar spectra of Data Release 1 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-DR1). At z~2.5, this homogeneous dataset has greater statistical significance than the previous two decades of research. We derive a statistical sample of 71 damped Lya systems (>50 previously unpublished) at z>2.1 and measure HI column densities directly from the SDSS spectra. The number of DLA systems per unit redshift is consistent with previous measurements and we expect our survey has >95% completeness. We examine the cosmological bar…
We investigate whether cosmological data suggest the need for massive neutrinos. We employ galaxy power spectrum measurements from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the Two Degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS), along with cosmic microwave background (CMB) data from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) and 27 other CMB experiments. We also use the measurement of the Hubble parameter from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Key Project. We find the sum of the neutrino masses to be smaller than 0.75 eV at 2σ(1.1 eV at 3σ).
We present initial results from a Magellan telescope program to image galaxies that give rise to damped Lyman absorbers (DLAs) at 1.63 < z_DLA < 2.37. Our program differs from previous efforts in that we target quasars with intervening Lyman limit systems (LLS) along the line of sight at redshift z_LLS > 3.5. The higher-redshift LLS is applied as a blocking filter to remove the glare of the background quasar at the rest-frame ultraviolet wavelengths of the foreground galaxy. The complete absence of quasar light offers an unimpeded view along the sightline to the redshift of the LLS, allowing a…
We determine the space density of UV-luminous star-burst galaxies at z~6 using deep HST ACS SDSS-i' (F775W) and SDSS-z' (F850LP) and VLT ISAAC J and K_s band imaging of the Chandra Deep Field South. We find 8 galaxies and one star with (i'-z')>1.5 to a depth of z'{AB}= 25.6 (an 8-sigma detection in each of the 3 available ACS epochs). This corresponds to an unobscured star formation rate of ~15M_sun/yr/h{70}^2 at z=5.8, equivalent to L* for the Lyman break population at z =3-4 (Omega_{Lambda}=0.7, Omega_M=0.3). We are sensitive to star forming galaxies at 5.6<z<7.0 with an effective comoving v…
We calculate the redshift-space power spectrum of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 4 (DR4) Luminous Red Galaxy (LRG) sample, finding evidence for a full series of acoustic features down to the scales of \sim 0.2 hMpc^{-1}. This corresponds up to the 7th peak in the CMB angular power spectrum. The acoustic scale derived, (105.4 \pm 2.3) h^{-1}Mpc, agrees very well with the ``concordance'' model prediction and also with the one determined via the analysis of the spatial two-point correlation function by Eisenstein et al. (2005). The models with baryonic features are favored by 3.…
While most of the microwave background fluctuations on angular scales greater than a few arcminutes were generated at z > 800, the low redshift universe does distort the microwave background. Since the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) traces the structures in the low-redshift universe, we can gain additional insights into the physics of the low-redshift universe by cross-correlating microwave background maps with template maps produced from the SDSS. We present a formalism for cross-correlating data from the Microwave Anisotropy Probe (MAP) with the Sloan Survey for the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovi…
We present the results of a search for gravitational lensing of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) in cross-correlation with the projected density of luminous red galaxies (LRGs). The CMB lensing reconstruction is performed using the first year of Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) data, and the galaxy maps are obtained using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) imaging data. We find no detection of lensing; our constraint on the galaxy bias derived from the galaxy-convergence cross-spectrum is $b_g=1.81\pm 1.92$ ($1σ$, statistical), as compared to the expected result of $b_g\sim 1.…
We report the discovery of five quasars with redshifts of 4.67 - 5.27 and z'-band magnitudes of 19.5-20.7 M_B ~ -27. All were originally selected as distant quasar candidates in optical/near-infrared photometry from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and most were confirmed as probable high-redshift quasars by supplementing the SDSS data with J and K measurements. The quasars possess strong, broad Lyman-alpha emission lines, with the characteristic sharp cutoff on the blue side produced by Lyman-alpha forest absorption. Three quasars contain strong, broad absorption features, and one of them…
We calculate the redshift-space power spectrum of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Luminous Red Galaxy (LRG) sample, finding evidence for a full series of acoustic features down to the scales of ~0.25 h Mpc^{-1}. This corresponds up to the 9. peak in the CMB angular power spectrum. The acoustic scale derived, (107.8 +- 4.3) h^{-1}Mpc (k < 0.2 h Mpc^{-1}), agrees very well with the ``concordance'' model prediction and also with the one determined via the analysis of the spatial two-point correlation function by Eisenstein et al.(2005). This is not only an independent confirmation of Eisenste…
We cross-correlate large scale structure (LSS) observations from a number of surveys with CMB anisotropies from WMAP to investigate the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect as a function of redshift, covering z~0.1-2.5. Our main goal is to go beyond reporting detections towards developing a reliable likelihood analysis that allows one to determine cosmological constraints from ISW observations. With this in mind we spend a considerable amount of effort in determining the redshift-dependent bias and redshift distribution b(z)*dN/dz of these samples by matching with spectroscopic observations whe…
We carried out a target survey for Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) and Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs) around QSO SDSS J0211-0009 at z=4.87. The deep and wide broadband and narrowband imaging simultaneously revealed the perspective structure of these two high-z populations. The LBGs without Ly-alpha emission form a filamentary structure including the QSO, while the LAEs are distributed around the QSO but avoid it within a distance of ~4.5Mpc. On the other hand, we serendipitously discovered a protocluster with a significant concentration of LBGs and LAEs where no strongly UV ionizing source such as a …
We present near-infrared H and K-band spectra of the z=6.41 quasar SDSS J114816.64+525150.3. The spectrum reveals a broad MgII 2799 emission line with a full-width half-maximium of 6000 km/s. From the peak wavelength of this emission line we obtain a more accurate redshift than is possible from the published optical spectrum and determine a redshift of z=6.41+/-0.01. If the true peak of the Lyman alpha emission is at the same redshift, then a large fraction of the flux blueward of the peak is absorbed. The equivalent width of the MgII emission line is similar to that of lower redshift quasars,…
Generically, the classical evolution of the inflaton has a brief fast roll stage that precedes the slow roll regime. The fast roll stage leads to a purely attractive potential for the curvature and tensor perturbations (this potential is purely repulsive in slowroll). This attractive potential depresses the CMB quadrupole moment for the curvature and B-mode spectra. A single new cosmological parameter emerges: the comoving wavenumber k_1 characteristic scale of this attractive potential.k_1 happens to exit the horizon precisely at the transition from fast to slowroll. The fastroll stage dynamica…
We present results for the cross-correlation between the WMAP 1st-year cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy data and optical galaxy surveys: the APM and SDSS DR1 catalogs. Our measurement of a positive CMB-galaxy correlation on large angles (θ> 4 deg) yields significant detections of the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect and provides a new estimate of dark-energy in the universe, Ω_Λ=0.69-0.86 (2 σrange). In addition, the correlated signal on small angles (θ<1 deg) reveals the imprint left by hot intra-cluster gas in the CMB photons: the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect
We combine the Ly-alpha forest power spectrum (LYA) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and high resolution spectra with cosmic microwave background (CMB) including 3-year WMAP, and supernovae (SN) and galaxy clustering constraints to derive new constraints on cosmological parameters. The existing LYA power spectrum analysis is supplemented by constraints on the mean flux decrement derived using a principle component analysis for quasar continua, which improves the LYA constraints on the linear power. We find some tension between the WMAP3 and LYA power spectrum amplitudes, at the ~2 sigm…
We derive constraint on the effective number of neutrino species N_nu from the cosmic microwave background power spectrum of the WMAP and galaxy clustering power spectrum of the SDSS luminous red galaxies (LRGs). Using these two latest data sets of CMB and galaxy clustering alone, we obtain the limit 0.9 < N_nu < 8.2 (95% C.L.) for the power-law LambdaCDM flat universe, with no external prior. The lower limit corresponds to the lower bound on the reheating temperature of the universe T_R > 2 MeV.
We have carefully analysed the potential of future Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and Large Scale Structure (LSS) measurements to probe neutrino masses. We perform a Fisher matrix analysis on a 9-dimensional cosmological parameter space and find that data from the Planck CMB experiment combined with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) can measure a neutrino mass of 0.12 eV at 95% conf. This is almost at the level of the 0.06 eV mass suggested by current neutrino oscillation data. A future galaxy survey with an order of magnitude larger survey volume than the SDSS would allow for a neutrino …
We investigate cosmological evolution and implications of cosmic strings with time-dependent tension. We derive basic equations of time development of the correlation length and the velocity of such strings, based on the one scale model. Then, we find that, in the case where the tension depends on some power of the cosmic time, cosmic strings with time-dependent tension goes into the scaling solution if the power is lower than a critical value. We also discuss cosmic microwave background anisotropy and matter power spectra produced by these strings. The constraints on their tensions from the W…
