Based on our intensive spectroscopic campaign with the GoldCam spectrograph on the Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO) 2.1-m telescope, we have constructed the first catalogue of E+A galaxies with spectroscopic companion galaxies, and investigated a probability that an E+A galaxy have close companion galaxies. We selected 660 E+A galaxies with $4.0{\rm Å} < {\rm H}δ{\rm EW}$ at a redshift of $<0.167$ from the Data Release 5 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We selected their companion candidates from the SDSS imaging data, and classified them into true companions, fore/background galaxies and companion candidates using the SDSS and our KPNO spectra. We observed 26 companion candidates of E+A galaxies at the KPNO to measure their redshifts. Their spectra showed that 17 targets are true companion galaxies. The number of spectroscopically-confirmed E+A's companions are now 34. This becomes the first catalogue of E+A galaxies with spectroscopic companion systems. We found that E+A galaxies have an 54% larger probability of having companion galaxies (7.88%) compared to the comparison sample of normal galaxies (5.12%). A statistical test shows the probabilities are different with 99.7% significance. Our results based on spectroscopy tightens the connection between the dynamical merger/interaction and the origin of E+A galaxies.
We assume that if the sun has a companion, it has a period of 27 Myr corresponding to the periodicity seen in cometary impacts on earth. Based on this assumption, it is seen that the inner Lagrengian point of the interaction between the Sun and its companion is in the Oort cloud. From this we calculate the mass -- distance relation for the companion. We then compute the expected apparent magnitude (visible and J band) for the companion using the models of Burrows (1993). We then compare this with the catalogue completeness of optical and infrared catalogues to show that the sun cannot have a c…
In an ongoing survey for high proper motion stars at low galactic latitudes, we have identified 5 previously uncatalogued common proper motion companions to stars listed in the Preliminary Version of the Third Catalogue of Nearby Stars (GJ stars). For each system, the relative proper motion between the components is less than 5% of the common proper motion of the pair. Spectra of the pairs have been obtained at the Lick 3-m Shane Telescope, confirming that the systems are indeed wide separation binaries. The systems are classified as follows: GJ 4047AB = K5 V + M5 V, GJ 718AB = K5 V + M4.5 V, …
The Catalogue, available at the Centre de Données Stellaires de Strasbourg, consists of 13573 records concerning the results obtained from different methods for 7778 stars, reported in the literature. The following data are listed for each star: identifications, apparent magnitude, spectral type, apparent diameter in arcsec, absolute radius in solar units, method of determination, reference, remarks. Comments and statistics obtained from CADARS are given.
A catalog of 232 apparently interacting galaxy pairs of the M51 class is presented. Catalog members were identified from visual inspection of mult-band images in the IRSA archive. The major findings in the compilation of this catalog are (1) A surprisingly low number of the main galaxies in M51 systems are early type spirals and barred spirals. (2) Over 70% of the main galaxies in M51 systems are 2-armed spirals. (3) Some systems that were classified as M51 types in previous studies are not M51 types as defined in this catalog. There were a number of systems previously classified as M51 system…
We present a catalogue of velocities for 551 galaxies (and give the coordinates of 39 stars misclassified as galaxies in our photometric plate catalogue) in a region covering about 100'$\times$100' (0.94$\times$0.94 Mpc for an average redshift of 0.0555, assuming H$_\circ$=50 km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$) in the direction of the rich cluster Abell 85. This catalogue includes previously published redshifts by Beers et al. (1991) and Malumuth et al. (1992), together with our 367 new measurements. A total of 305 galaxies have velocities in the interval 13350-20000 km s$^{-1}$, and will be considered as…
We present a catalogue of velocities for 466 galaxies in the direction of the cluster Abell 496, in a region covering about 160' x 160' (9.2 x 9.2 Mpc for an average redshift for Abell 496 of 0.0331, assuming H$_0$=50 km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$). This catalogue includes previously published redshifts by Proust et al. (1987), Quintana and Ramirez (1990) and Malumuth et al. (1992), redshifts from the CfA redshift survey, together with our new measurements. A total of 274 galaxies have velocities in the 7800-11800 km/s interval, and will be considered as members of the cluster. Abell 496 therefore be…
Discussion of the designation of multiple-star components leads to a conclusion that, apart from components, we need to designate systems and centers-of-mass. The hierarchy is coded then by simple links to parent. This system is adopted in the multiple star catalogue, now available on-line. A short review of multiple-star statistics is given: the frequency of different multiplicities in the field, periods of spectroscopic sub-systems, relative orbit orientation, empirical stability criterion, and period-period diagram with its possible connection to formation of multiple stars.
A catalogue of 231 Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) is presented, and the selection effects applicable to the identification of remnants at radio wavelengths are discussed. In addition to missing low surface brightness remnants, small angular size -- i.e. young but distant -- remnants are also missing from the current catalogue of Galactic SNRs. Several statistical properties of Galactic SNRs are discussed, including the surface-brightness/diameter (Sigma-D) relation. It is concluded that the wide range of intrinsic properties of Galactic remnants with known distances, together with the obse…
Context: Alpha Centauri is our closest stellar neighbor, at a distance of only 1.3 pc, and its two main components have spectral types comparable to the Sun. This is therefore a favorable target for an imaging search for extrasolar planets. Moreover, indications exist that the gravitational mass of Alpha Cen B is higher than its modeled mass, the difference being consistent with a substellar companion of a few tens of Jupiter masses. Aims: We searched for faint comoving companions to Alpha Cen B. As a secondary objective, we built a catalogue of the detected background sources. Methods: We use…
To reveal small galaxy groups in the Local Supercluster, a new approach is suggested which allows for individual properties of galaxies. The criterion is based on the assumption of closed motions of companions around the dominating group member within a zero velocity sphere. The criterion is applied to a sample of 6321 nearby galaxies with radial velocities $V_0\le3000$ km/s. The 3472 galaxies have been assigned to 839 groups that include 55% of the considered sample. For the groups revealed by the new algorithm (with $k \geq 5$ members) the median velocity dispersion is 86 km/s, the median ha…
We present the second part of an H-band (1.6 microns) atlas of z<0.3 3CR radio galaxies, using the Hubble Space Telescope Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (HST NICMOS2). We present new imaging for 21 recently acquired sources, and host galaxy modeling for the full sample of 101 (including 11 archival) -- an 87% completion rate. Two different modeling techniques are applied, following those adopted by the galaxy morphology and the quasar host galaxy communities. Results are compared, and found to be in excellent agreement, although the former breaks down in the case of strongl…
We present new results from our ongoing multiplicity study of exoplanet host stars and present a list of 29 confirmed planet host multiple-star systems. Furthermore, we discuss the properties of these stellar systems and compare the properties of exoplanets detected in these systems with those of planets orbiting single stars.
We have acquired high-resolution echelle spectra of 225 F6-M5 type stars in the southern hemisphere. The stars are targets or candidates to be targets for the Anglo-Australian Planet Search. CaII HK line cores were used to derive activity indices for all of these objects. The indices were converted to the Mt. Wilson system of measurements and logR'HK values determined. A number of these stars had no previously derived activity indices. In addition we have also included the stars from Tinney et al. (2002) using our Mt. Wilson calibration. The radial-velocity instability (also known as jitter) l…
We have found a statistically significant (99.1 \%) excess of red ($O-E>2$) galaxies with photographic magnitudes $E<19.5$, $O< 21$ taken from the APM Sky Catalogue around $z \sim 1$ radiosources from the 1Jy catalogue. The amplitude, scale and dependence on galaxy colours of the observed overdensity are consistent with its being a result of the magnification bias caused by the weak gravitational lensing of large scale structures at redshift $z \approx 0.2-0.4$ and are hardly explained by other causes, as obscuration by dust.
We have conducted a deep and uniform 1.1 mm survey of the GOODS-N field with AzTEC on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). Here we present the first results from this survey including maps, the source catalogue, and 1.1 mm number-counts. The results presented here were obtained from a 245 sq-arcmin region with near uniform coverage to a depth of 0.96-1.16 mJy/beam. Our robust catalogue contains 28 source candidates detected with S/N >= 3.75, only 1-2 of which are expected to be spurious detections. Of these source candidates, 8 are also detected by SCUBA at 850 um in regions where there i…
We present a new improved and completed version of the Flat Galaxy Catalogue (FGC) named the Revised Flat Galaxy Catalogue (RFGC) containing 4236 thin edge-on spiral galaxies and covering the whole sky. The Catalogue is intended to study large-scale cosmic streamings as well as other problems of observational cosmology. The dipole moment of distribution of the RFGC galaxies (l = 273 degr; b =+19 degr) lies within statistical errors (+/-10 degr) in the direction of the Local Group motion towards the Microwave Background Radiation (MBR).
We derive the number of dynamically close companions per galaxy ($N_c$) and their total luminosity ($L_c$) for galaxies in the Millennium Galaxy Catalogue: $N_c$ is similar to the fraction of galaxies in close pairs and is directly related to the galaxy merger rate. We find $N_c=0.0174 \pm 0.0015$ and $L_c=(252 \pm 30) \times 10^6$ $L_{\odot}$ for galaxies with $-22 < M_B -5 \log h < -19$ with $<z>=0.123$ and $N_c=0.0357 \pm 0.0027$, $L_c= (294 \pm 31) \times 10^6 L_{\odot}$ for galaxies with $-21 < M_B -5 \log h < -18$, with $<z>=0.116$. The integrated merger rate to $z=1$ for both samples is…
We have compiled a catalogue of the gas content for a sample of 1916 galaxies, considered to be a fair representation of `normality'. The definition of 'normal' galaxy adopted in this work implies that we have purposely excluded from the catalogue galaxies having distorted morphology (such as interaction bridges, tails or lopsidedness) and/or any signature of peculiar kinematics (such as polar rings, counterrotating disks or other decoupled components). In contrast, we have included systems hosting active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the catalogue. This catalogue revises previous compendia on the …
We present a catalogue of morphologically classified bright galaxies in the north equatorial stripe (230 deg$^2$) derived from the Third Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Morphological classification is performed by visual inspection of images in the $g$ band. The catalogue contains 2253 galaxies complete to a magnitude limit of $r=16$ after Galactic extinction correction, selected from 2658 objects that are judged as extended in the photometric catalogue in the same magnitude limit. 1866 galaxies in our catalogue have spectroscopic information. A brief statistical analysis …
We have analyzed galaxy properties in the environment of a sample of 70 Ultra Steep Spectrum (USS) radio sources selected from the Sydney University Molonglo sky Survey and the NRAO VLA Sky Survey catalogues, using near-IR data complete down to Ks=20. We have quantified galaxy excess around USS targets using an Abell-type measurement N0.5 (Hill & Lilly 1991). We find that most of the USS fields studied are compatible with being Abell class 0 richness clusters. A statistical analysis of the distribution of companion galaxies around USS radio sources show a pronounced tendency for such objects t…
Current experiments collecting high statistics in ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) are opening a new window on the universe. In this work we discuss a large scale structure model for the UHECR origin which evaluates the expected anisotropy in the UHECR arrival distribution starting from a given astronomical catalogue of the local universe. The model takes into account the main selection effects in the catalogue and the UHECR propagation effects. By applying this method to the IRAS PSCz catalogue, we derive the minimum statistics needed to significatively reject the hypothesis that UHECRs…
Many EHB stars have been found in short-period binaries, where the companions in these post-common envelope systems are either white dwarfs or dM stars; these systems are catalogued as hot subdwarfs because the subdwarf is the more luminous component. Hypothesized Roche-lobe overflow systems (with more massive companions) may largely be uncatalogued, since the G band or Ca II K-line from the companion may have caused them to be overlooked or discarded. In particular, many candidate objects were excluded from the PG catalog because of such spectroscopic indicators. Could these rejects include l…
Ten years after the publication of the previous release, we present a new edition of the Asiago Supernova Catalogue updated to December 31, 1998 and containing data for 1447 supernovae and their parent galaxies\footnote{Tables 1 and 2 are only available in electronic form at the CDS via anonymous ftp to cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or via http://cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/Abstract.html}. In addition to list the data for a large number of new SNe, we made an effort to search the literature for new information on past SNe as well. We also tried to update and homogenize the data for the parent gal…
Continuing our census of late-type dwarfs in the Solar Neighbourhood, we present BVRI photometry and optical spectroscopy of 800 mid-type M dwarfs drawn from the NLTT proper motion catalogue. The targets are taken from both our own cross-referencing of the NLTT catalogue and the 2MASS Second Incremental release, and from the revised NLTT compiled by Salim & Gould (2003). All are identified as nearby-star candidates based on their location in the (m_r, (m_r-K_S)) diagram. Three hundred stars discussed here have previous astrometric, photometric or spectroscopic observations. We present new BVRI…
We present a new analysis of the ISOCAM 14.3 micron deep survey in a 20x20 square arcmins area in the Lockman Hole. This survey is intermediate between the ultra-deep surveys and the shallow surveys in the ELAIS fields. The data have been analyzed with the method presented by Lari et al. (2001). We have produced a catalogue of 283 sources detected above the 5-sigma threshold, with fluxes in the interval 0.1-8 mJy. The catalogue is 90% complete at 1 mJy. The positional accuracy, estimated from the cross-correlation of infrared and optical sources, is around 1.5 arcsec. The search for the optica…
AIMS. A recent catalogue by Flesch & Hardcastle presents two major anomalies in the spatial distribution of QSO candidates: i/ an apparent excess of such objects near bright galaxies, and ii/ an excess of very bright QSO candidates compared to random background expectations in several regions of the sky. Because anyone of these anomalies would be relevant in a cosmological context, we carried out an extensive analysis of the probabilities quoted in that catalogue. METHODS. We determine the nature and redshift of a subsample of 30 sources in that catalogue by analysing their optical spectra (an…
