We consider a system of three surfaces, graphs over a bounded domain in ${\mathbb R}^2$, intersecting along a time-dependent curve and moving by mean curvature while preserving the pairwise angles at the curve of intersection (equal to $2π/3$.) For the corresponding two-dimensional parabolic free boundary problem we prove short-time existence of classical solutions (in parabolic Hölder spaces), for sufficiently regular initial data satisfying a compatibility condition.
We consider the evolution by curvature of a general embedded network with two triple junctions. We classify the possible singularities and we discuss the long time existence of the evolution.
This paper is the first part of an ongoing project aimed at providing a local minimality criterion, based on a second variation approach, for the triple point configurations of the Mumford-Shah functional.
We show short time existence for the evolution of triple junction clusters driven by the surface diffusion flow. On the triple line we use the boundary conditions derived by Garcke and Novick-Cohen as the singular limit of a Cahn-Hilliard equation with degenerated mobility. These conditions are concurrency of the triple junction, angle conditions between the hypersurfaces, continuity of the chemical potentials and a flux-balance. For the existence analysis we first write the geometric problem over a fixed reference surface and then use for the resulting analytic problem an approach in a parabo…
We conduct an analysis of the blow up at the triple junction of three fluids in equilibrium. Energy minimizers have been shown to exist in the class of functions of bounded variations, and the classical theory implies that an interface between two fluids is an analytic surface. We prove two monotonicity formulas at the triple junction for the three-fluid configuration, and show that blow up limits exist and are always cones. We discuss some of the geometric consequences of our results.
Many technologically useful materials are polycrystals composed of a myriad of small monocrystalline grains separated by grain boundaries. Dynamics of grain boundaries play an essential role in defining the materials properties across multiple scales. In this work, we study the large time asymptotic behavior of the model for the motion of grain boundaries with the dynamic lattice misorientations and the triple junctions drag.
We consider mean curvature flow of n-dimensional surface clusters. At (n-1)-dimensional triple junctions an angle condition is required which in the symmetric case reduces to the well-known 120 degree angle condition. Using a novel parametrization of evolving surface clusters and a new existence and regularity approach for parabolic equations on surface clusters we show local well-posedness by a contraction argument in parabolic Hoelder spaces.
We consider a nonnegative potential $W:\mathbb{R}^2\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ invariant under the action of the rotation group $C_N$ of the regular polygon with $N$ sides, $N\geq 3$. We assume that $W$ has $N$ nondegenerate zeros and prove the existence of a $N$-junction solution to the vector Allen-Cahn equation. The proof is variational and is based on sharp lower and upper bounds for the energy and on a new pointwise estimate for vector minimizers.
Most technologically useful materials are polycrystalline microstructures composed of a myriad of small monocrystalline grains separated by grain boundaries. The energetics and connectivities of grain boundaries play a crucial role in defining the main characteristics of materials across a wide range of scales. In this work, we propose a model for the evolution of the grain boundary network with dynamic boundary conditions at the triple junctions, triple junctions drag, and with dynamic lattice misorientations. Using the energetic variational approach, we derive system of geometric differentia…
Mean curvature flow of clusters of n-dimensional surfaces in R^{n+k} that meet in triples at equal angles along smooth edges and higher order junctions on lower dimensional faces is a natural extension of classical mean curvature flow. We call such a flow a mean curvature flow with triple edges. We show that if a smooth mean curvature flow with triple edges is weakly close to a static union of three n-dimensional unit density half-planes, then it is smoothly close. Extending the regularity result to a class of integral Brakke flows, we show that this implies smooth short-time existence of the …
We prove that there are no networks homeomorphic to the Greek "theta" letter (a double cell) embedded in the plane with two triple junctions with angles of $120$ degrees, such that under the motion by curvature they are self-similarly shrinking. This fact completes the classification of the self-similarly shrinking networks in the plane with at most two triple junctions.

We introduce a parabolic blow-up method to study the asymptotic behavior of an integral Brakke flow of planar networks (i.e. a 1-dimensional integral Brakke flow in a two dimensional region) weakly close in a space-time region to a static multiplicity 1 triple junction $J$. We show that such a network flow is regular in a smaller space-time region, in the sense that it consists of three curves coming smoothly together at a single point at 120 degree angles, staying smoothly close to $J$ and moving smoothly. Using this result and White's stratification theorem, we deduce that whenever an integr…
Many technologically useful materials are polycrystals composed of small monocrystalline grains that are separated by grain boundaries of crystallites with different lattice orientations. The energetics and connectivities of the grain boundaries play an essential role in defining the effective properties of materials across multiple scales. In this paper we derive a Fokker-Planck model for the evolution of the planar grain boundary network. The proposed model considers anisotropic grain boundary energy which depends on lattice misorientation and takes into account mobility of the triple juncti…
