We analyze azimuthal anisotropy in heavy ion collisions related to the reaction plane in terms of standard reggeon approach and find that it is nonzero even when the final state interaction is switched off. This effect can be interpreted in terms of partonic structure of colliding nuclei. We use Feynman diagram analysis to describe details of this mechanism. Main qualitative features of the appropriate azimuthal correlations are discussed.
The various experimental data at AGS, SPS and RHIC energies on hadron particle yields for central heavy ion collisions are investigated by employing a generalized statistical density operator, that allows for a well-defined anisotropic local momentum distribution for each particle species, specified by a common streaming velocity parameter. The individual particle ratios are rather insensitive to a change in this new intensive parameter. This leads to the conclusion that the reproduction of particle ratios by a statistical treatment does not imply the existence of a fully isotropic local momen…
We use leading-order anisotropic hydrodynamics to study an azimuthally-symmetric boost-invariant quark-gluon plasma. We impose a realistic lattice-based equation of state and perform self-consistent anisotropic freeze-out to hadronic degrees of freedom. We then compare our results for the full spatiotemporal evolution of the quark-gluon plasma and its subsequent freeze-out to results obtained using 1+1d Israel-Stewart second-order viscous hydrodynamics. We find that for small shear viscosities, 4 pi eta/s ~ 1, the two methods agree well for nucleus-nucleus collisions, however, for large shear …

Starting from the effective lagrangian for QCD at high energy we calculate the lowest perturbative contributions to the potential of a relativistic nucleus and compare our results to those derived by Kovchegov (see Y.V. Kovchegov, Phys. Rev. {\bf D55}, 5445 (1997)). The results differ already at order g^3 which can be traced to the fact that the meaning of the underlying gluon fields is different. (The effective gluon field we use is a gauge invariant object.) Both approaches should therefore be seen as alternatives, the relative merits of which have to be judged by their phenomenological succ…
The framework of leading-order anisotropic hydrodynamics is supplemented with realistic equation of state and self-consistent freeze-out prescription. The model is applied to central proton-nucleus collisions. The results are compared to those obtained within standard Israel-Stewart second-order viscous hydrodynamics. It is shown that the resulting hadron spectra are highly-sensitive to the hydrodynamic approach that has been used.
The hypothesis of the multi peripheral model is extended to the hadron-nucleus interactions and then generalized to the nucleus-nucleus case. The processing of the model depends on input parameters that are extracted from the features of the experiments in this field. The number of encountered nucleons from both target and projectile are estimated according to the eikonal scattering approach. The screening effect due to the interaction of the projectile nucleons in successive manner with the target nucleus is considered. The rapidity distributions of fast particles are reproduced for the succe…
The McLerran-Venugopalan model describes a highly boosted hadron/nucleus as a sheet of random color charges which source soft classical Weizsäcker-Williams gluon fields. We show that due to fluctuations, individual configurations are azimuthally anisotropic. We present initial evidence that impact parameter dependent small-x JIMWLK resummation preserves such anisotropies over several units of rapidity. Finally, we compute the first four azimuthal Fourier amplitudes of the S-matrix of a fundamental dipole in such background fields.
Cumulant oscillations, or $H_q$ moment oscillations, appear if the KNO multiparticle distribution decreases at large z, $z\equiv n/ <n>$, faster than the exponential, $exp(-D z^μ)$, with $μ> 1$. In nucleus-nucleus interactions this behaviour is related to the limitation in the average number of elementary central collisions (or average number of strings centrally produced), due to the finite number of nucleons involved. Colour deconfinement, via percolating string fusion, will drastically decrease the fraction of centrally produced strings and increase the cut-off parameter $μ$: Moment oscilla…
We evaluate the viscous damping of anisotropic flow in heavy-ion collisions for arbitrary temperature-dependent shear and bulk viscosities. We show that the damping is solely determined by effective shear and bulk viscosities, which are weighted averages over the temperature. We determine the relevant weights for nucleus-nucleus collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02$ TeV and 200 GeV, corresponding to the maximum LHC and RHIC energies, by running ideal and viscous hydrodynamic simulations. The effective shear viscosity is driven by temperatures below $210$ MeV at RHIC, and below $280$ MeV at th…
We calculate the classical gluon field of a fast projectile passing through a dense medium. We show that this allows us to calculate both the initial state gluon production in proton-nucleus collisions and the final state gluon radiation off a hard parton produced in nucleus-nucleus collisions. This unified description of these two phenomena makes the relation between the saturation scale $Q_s$ and the transport coefficient $\hat q$ more transparent. Also, we discuss the validity of the eikonal approximation for gluon propagation inside the nucleus in proton-nucleus collisions at RHIC energy.
We have investigated the gauge field of a fast moving projectile passing through a dense medium. We provide a simple and unified derivation, in light cone gauge, of the gluon production cross-section in proton-nucleus (initial state interactions), and the radiative gluon spectrum of a hard parton produced in a nucleus-nucleus collision (final state interactions). Finally, we discuss the validity of the eikonal approximation in proton-nucleus collisions at RHIC energies.
We investigate the jet quenching parameter in the case of a fast moving quark in an anisotropic plasma. In the leading log approximation, strong indications are found that the transport coefficient increases with increasing anisotropy. Implications for the phenomenology at RHIC are discussed.
Recent work, using an effective field theory framework, has shown the number of possible couplings between nucleons and the dark-matter-candidate Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) is larger than previously thought. Inspired by an existing Mathematica script that computes the target response, we have developed a fast, modern Fortran code, including optional OpenMP parallelization, along with a user-friendly Python wrapper, to swiftly and efficiently explore many scenarios, with output aligned with practices of current dark matter searches. A library of most of the important target nu…
The inelasticity in nucleus-nucleus collisions at high energies is calculated in the framework of geometrical multichain model. The very fast increase of the inelasticity is found as a result of a second-stage cascading process. The same behaviour is expected for all the models using the wounded nucleon idea. The simple formula for the number of wounded nucleons inside colliding nuclei does not need to be exact.
We propose to use the theory of phase transitions of Lee and Yang as a practical tool to analyze long-range correlations in a finite-size system. We apply it to the analysis of anisotropic flow in nucleus-nucleus collisions, and show that this method is more reliable than any other used so far.
I give a pedagogical survey of the nuclear collective effects associated with gluon saturation and their impact on particle production in high-energy proton (or deuteron)-nucleus collisions at RHIC. At central rapidity, the theory predicts a Cronin peak due to independent multiple scattering off the valence quarks in the nucleus. At forward rapidities, the peak flattens out and disappears very fast, because of the correlations induced through quantum evolution in the nuclear gluon distribution at small x. Also, the ratio R_{pA} between the particle yield in proton-nucleus and proton-proton col…
Within the framework of Boltzmann transport equation with a Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) collisional kernel, we study the wake potential induced by fast partons traveling through the high-temperature QCD plasma which is anisotropic in momentum-space. We calculate the dielectric response function of a collisional anisotropic quark-gluon plasma (AQGP) for small $ξ$ (anisotropic parameter) limit. Using this, the wake potential for various combinations of the anisotropy parameter ($ξ$) and the collision rate ($ν$) is evaluated both for parallel and perpendicular directions of motion of the fast par…
Strong, anisotropic turbulence reflecting magnetized filaments is considered, to model the diffusive acceleration of particles by shock waves in active galactic nucleus jets. We address that at knot A of the nearby M87 jet, the shock involving the filamentary turbulence can accelerate an iron nucleus to zetta-eV (ZeV; 10^{21} eV) ranges. A smaller value of the particle diffusion coefficient is found to be essential to achieve a ZeV cosmic-ray accelerator, a "Zevatron."
The notion of the "size" of nucleons and their constituents plays a pivotal role in the current paradigm of the formation and the fluctuations of the quark-gluon plasma produced in high-energy nuclear collision experiments. We report on state-of-the-art hydrodynamic results showing that the correlation between anisotropic flow, $v_n^2$, and the mean transverse momentum of hadrons, $[p_t]$, possesses a unique sensitivity to the nucleon size in off-central heavy-ion collisions. We argue that existing experimental measurements of this observable support a picture where the relevant length scale c…
