We present here additional results of a spectropolarimetric survey of a small sample of stars ranging from spectral type M0 to M8 aimed at investigating observationally how dynamo processes operate in stars on both sides of the full convection threshold (spectral type M4).
The present paper focuses on early M stars (M0--M3), i.e. above the full convection threshold. Applying tomographic imaging techniques to time series of rotationally modulated circularly polarised profiles collected with the NARVAL spectropolarimeter, we determine the rotation period and reconstruct the large-scale magnetic topologies of 6 early M dwarfs. We find that early-M stars preferentially host large-scale fields with dominantly toroidal and non-axisymmetric poloidal configurations, along with significant differential rotation (and long-term variability); only the lowest-mass star of our subsample is found to host an almost fully poloidal, mainly axisymmetric large-scale field ressembling those found in mid-M dwarfs.
This abrupt change in the large-scale magnetic topologies of M dwarfs (occuring at spectral type M3) has no related signature on X-ray luminosities (measuring the total amount of magnetic flux); it thus suggests that underlying dynamo processes become more efficient at producing large-scale fields (despite producing the same flux) at spectral types later than M3. We suspect that this change relates to the rapid decrease in the radiative cores of low-mass stars and to the simultaneous sharp increase of the convective turnover times (with decreasing stellar mass) that models predict to occur at M3; it may also be (at least partly) responsible for the reduced magnetic braking reported for fully-convective stars.
We present here the first results of a spectropolarimetric analysis of a small sample (about 20) of active stars ranging from spectral type M0 to M8, which are either fully-convective or possess a very small radiative core. This study aims at providing new constraints on dynamo processes in fully-convective stars. Results for stars with spectral types M0-M4 -- i.e. with masses above or just below the full convection threshold (about 0.35Msun) -- are presented. Tomographic imaging techniques allow us to reconstruct the surface magnetic topologies from the rotationally modulated time-series of c…
We present in this paper the first results of a spectropolarimetric analysis of a small sample (~ 20) of active stars ranging from spectral type M0 to M8, which are either fully-convective or possess a very small radiative core. This study aims at providing new constraints on dynamo processes in fully-convective stars. The present paper focuses on 5 stars of spectral type ~M4, i.e. with masses close to the full convection threshold (~ 0.35 Msun), and with short rotational periods. Tomographic imaging techniques allow us to reconstruct the surface magnetic topologies from the rotationally modul…
We have started a systematic study of the field topologies of magnetic single and accreting white dwarfs using Zeeman tomography. Here we report on our analysis of phase-resolved flux and circular polarization spectra of the magnetic cataclysmic variables BL Hyi and MR Ser obtained with FORS1 at the ESO VLT. For both systems we find that the field topologies are more complex than a dipole or an offset dipole and require at least multipole expansions up to order l = 3 to adequately describe the observed Zeeman features and their variations with rotational phase. Overall our model fits are in ex…
Early-type dwarf galaxies dominate cluster populations, but their formation and evolutionary histories are poorly understood. The ALFALFA (Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA) survey has completed observations of the Virgo Cluster in the declination range of 6 - 16 degrees. Less than 2% of the early-type dwarf population is detected, a significantly lower fraction than reported in previous papers based on more limited samples. In contrast ~30 of the irregular/BCD dwarf population is detected. The detected early-type galaxies tend to be located in the outer regions of the cluster, with a concentration in …
We have identified 7 new magnetic DA white dwarfs in the Early Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Our selection strategy has also recovered all the previously known magnetic white dwarfs contained in the SDSS EDR, KUV03292+0035 and HE0330-0002. Analysing the SDSS fibre spectroscopy of the magnetic DA white dwarfs with our state-of-the-art model spectra, we find dipole field strengths 1.5<=B_d<=63MG and effective temperatures 8500<=Teff<=39000K. As a conservative estimate, we expect that the complete SDSS will increase the number of known magnetic white dwarfs by a factor 3.
We report differential I-band photometry of four early L-dwarfs obtained to study variability. We detect variability on the timescale of hours in two objects, 2M0746425+200032 (at a level of 0.007 mag -- 6.5 sigma) and 2M1108307+683017 (0.012 mag -- 5 sigma). We also place upper limits of 0.02 mag (1 sigma) on the variability of two others.
We report the discovery of three cool brown dwarfs which fall in the effective temperature gap between the latest L dwarfs currently known, with no methane absorption bands in the 1-2.5um range, and the previously known methane (T) dwarfs, whose spectra are dominated by methane and water. The newly discovered objects were detected as very red objects in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey imaging data and have JHK colors between the red L dwarfs and the blue Gl229B-like T dwarfs. They show both CO and methane absorption in their near-infrared spectra in addition to water, with weaker methane absorpti…
Following the discovery of spiral structure in IC3328 (Jerjen et al.~2000), we present further evidence that a sizable fraction of bright early-type dwarfs in the Virgo cluster are genuine disk galaxies, or are hosting a disk component. Among a sample of 23 nucleated dwarf ellipticals and dS0s observed with the Very Large Telescope in $B$ and $R$, we found another four systems exhibiting non-axisymmetric structures, such as a bar and/or spiral arms, indicative of a disk (IC0783, IC3349, NGC4431, IC3468). Particularly remarkable are the two-armed spiral pattern in IC0783 and the bar and trailin…
We present a systematic search for disks in 476 Virgo cluster early-type dwarf (dE) galaxies. Disk features (spiral arms, edge-on disks, or bars) were identified by applying unsharp masks to a combined image from three bands (g, r, i), as well as by subtracting the axisymmetric light distribution of each galaxy from that image. 14 objects are unambiguous identifications of disks, 10 objects show 'probable disk' features, and 17 objects show 'possible disk' features. The number fraction of these galaxies, for which we introduce the term dEdi, reaches more than 50% at the bright end of the dE po…
Despite the common picture of an early-type dwarf (dE) as a quiescent galaxy with no star formation and little gas, we identify 23 dEs that have blue central colors caused by recent or ongoing star formation in our sample of 476 Virgo cluster dEs. In addition, 14 objects that were mostly classified as (candidate) BCDs have similar properties. Among the certain cluster members, the dEs with blue centers reach a fraction of more than 15% of the dE population at brighter (B<=16) magnitudes. A spectral analysis of the centers of 16 galaxies reveals in all cases an underlying old population that do…
We present kinematics and stellar population properties of 17 dwarf early-type galaxies in the luminosity range -14> M_B> -19. Our sample fills the gap between the intensively studied giant elliptical and Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxies. The dwarf ellipticals of the present sample have constant velocity dispersion profiles within their effective radii and do not show significant rotation, hence are clearly anisotropic. The dwarf lenticulars, instead, rotate faster and are, at least partially, supported by rotation. From optical Lick absorption indices, we derive metallicities and element…
Context: Dwarf galaxies can arise from self-gravitating structures emerging from tidal tails. What fraction of the known dwarf galaxies in the Local Universe can have this origin is still a matter of debate. Aims: In our effort to understand the origin and evolution of tidal dwarf galaxies and their correspondence with local objects, the first step is to understand how these galaxies (which are supposed to have a limited amount of dark matter) react to the feedback of the ongoing star formation. Methods: We make use of 2-D chemodynamical calculations in order to study the early evolution of is…
We analyse the properties of the early-type dwarf galaxy population in the Hydra I cluster. We investigate the galaxy luminosity function (LF), the colour-magnitude relation (CMR), and the magnitude-surface brightness relation down to M_V~-10 mag. Another goal of this study is to find candidates for ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs). Two spectroscopic surveys performed with Magellan I/LDSS2 and VLT/VIMOS, as well as deep VLT/FORS1 images in V and I bands were examined. We identify cluster members by radial velocity measurements and select other cluster galaxy candidates by their morphology. …
Our aim is to study the evolution of tidal dwarf galaxies. The first step is to understand whether a model galaxy without Dark Matter can sustain the feedback of the ongoing star formation. We present tests of the evolution of models in which star formation efficiency, temperature threshold, initial distribution of gas and infall are varied. We conclude that it is feasible to keep a fraction of gas bound for several hundreds of Myr and that the development of galactic winds does not necessarily stop continuous star formation.
We present analyses of high resolution and medium resolution spectra of early L dwarfs. We used our latest set of model atmospheres to reproduce and analyze the observed features. We can model the optical flux and the atomic line profiles with the best accuracy to date. The models used to reproduce the observations include dust condensation and dust opacities. Compared to previous studies using older models we find that our dust treatment is much improved. The derived parameters for the objects are well in the expected range for old very low mass objects. This is also supported by the absence …
We have carried out surface photometry and an isophotal analysis for a sample of 25 early-type dwarf (dE and dS0) galaxies in the Virgo cluster based on CCD images taken at the VLT with FORS1 and FORS2. For each galaxy we present $B$ and $R$-band surface brightness profiles, as well as the radial colour ($B-R$) profile. We give total apparent $BR$ magnitudes, effective radii, effective surface brightnesses and total colour indices. The light profiles have been fitted with Sérsic models and the corresponding parameters are compared to the ones for other classes of objects. The observed profiles…
We have obtained new CCD photometry for a sample of $\simeq 800$ early-type galaxies (dwarf and giant ellipticals) in the central 700 arcmin$^2$ of the Coma cluster, complete in color and in magnitude to $R = 22.5$ mag ($M_R \simeq -12$ mag for $H_0 = 86$ km/sec/Mpc). The composite luminosity function for all galaxies in the cluster core (excluding NGC 4874 and NGC 4889) is modeled as the sum of a Gaussian distribution for the giant galaxies and a Schechter function for the dwarf elliptical galaxies. We determine that the early-type dwarf-to-giant ratio (EDGR) for Coma is identical to that mea…
The pulsar B1620-26 has two companions, one of stellar mass and one of planetary mass. We detected the stellar companion using Hubble Space Telescope observations. The color and magnitude of the stellar companion indicate that it is an undermassive white dwarf ($0.34 \pm 0.04 M_{\odot}$) of age $480\pm 140$ Myr. This places a constraint on the recent history of this triple system and supports a scenario in which the current configuration arose through a dynamical exchange interaction in the cluster core. This implies that planets may be relatively common in low-metallicity globular clusters an…
Parkes neutral hydrogen 21 cm line (HI) observations of the surroundings of 9 early-type Local Group dwarfs are presented. We detected numerous HI clouds in the general direction of those dwarfs and these clouds are often offset from the optical center of the galaxies. Although all the observed dwarfs, except Antlia, occupy phase-space regions where the High-Velocity Cloud (HVC) density is well above average, the measured offsets are smaller than one would expect from a fully random cloud distribution. Possible association is detected for 11 of the 16 investigated clouds, while, for two galaxi…
Using a large sample of optical spectra of late-type dwarfs, we identify a subset of late-M through L field dwarfs that, because of the presence of low-gravity features in their spectra, are believed to be unusually young. From a combined sample of 303 field L dwarfs, we find observationally that 7.6+/-1.6% are younger than 100 Myr. This percentage is in agreement with theoretical predictions once observing biases are taken into account. We find that these young L dwarfs tend to fall in the southern hemisphere (Dec < 0 deg) and may be previously unrecognized, low-mass members of nearby, young …
We study the locus of dwarf and giant early and late-type galaxies on the Tully-Fisher relation (TFR), the stellar mass Tully-Fisher relation (sTFR) and the so-called baryonic or HI gas+stellar mass Tully-Fisher relation (gsTFR). We show that early-type and late-type galaxies, from dwarfs to giants, trace different yet approximately parallel TFRs. Surprisingly, early-type and late-type galaxies trace a single yet curved sTFR over a range of 3.5 orders of magnitude in stellar mass. Moreover, all galaxies trace a single, linear gsTFR, over 3.5 orders of magnitude in HI gas+stellar mass. Dwarf el…
We present our results of deep 21 cm line (HI) observations of five early and mixed-type dwarf galaxies in the nearby Sculptor group using the ATNF 64m Parkes Radio Telescope. Four of these objects, ESO294-G010, ESO410-G005, ESO540-G030, and ESO540-G032, were detected in HI with neutral hydrogen masses in the range of 2-9x10^5 M_{\odot} ($M_{HI}/L_{B}$ = 0.08, 0.13, 0.16, and 0.18, respectively). These HI masses are consistent with the gas mass expected from stellar outflows over a large period of time. Higher resolution radio data from the Australia Telescope Compact Array were further analys…
In this Paper we investigate the kinematical properties of early-type dwarfs by significantly enlarging the scarce observational sample so far available. We present rotation curves and mean velocity dispersions for four bright dwarf ellipticals and two dwarf lenticular galaxies in the Virgo cluster. Most of these galaxies exhibit conspicuous rotation curves. In particular, five out of the six new galaxies are found to be close to the predictions for oblate spheroids flattened by rotation. Therefore, and contrary to the previous observational hints, the present data suggest that an important fr…
Understanding the origin and evolution of dwarf early-type galaxies remains an important open issue in modern astrophysics. Internal kinematics of a galaxy contains signatures of violent phenomena which may have occurred, e.g. mergers or tidal interactions, while stellar population keeps a fossil record of the star formation history, therefore studying connection between them becomes crucial for understanding galaxy evolution. Here, in the first paper of the series, we present the data on spatially resolved stellar populations and internal kinematics for a large sample of dwarf elliptical (dE)…
We report on the first ultracool dwarf discoveries from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey Early Data Release (LAS EDR), in particular the discovery of T dwarfs which are fainter and more distant than those found using the 2MASS and SDSS surveys. We aim to show that our methodologies for searching the ~27 sq degs of the LAS EDR are successful for finding both L and T dwarfs $via$ cross-correlation with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR4 release. While the area searched so far is small, the numbers of objects found shows great promise for near-future releases of …
The history of the transition from a neutral intergalactic medium (IGM) to one that is almost fully ionized can reveal the character of cosmological ionizing sources and set important constraints on the stellar birthrate at high redshifts. The hydrogen component in a highly inhomogeneous universe is completely reionized when the number of photons emitted above 1 ryd in one recombination time equals the mean number of hydrogen atoms. If stellar sources are responsible for photoionizing the IGM at z=5, the rate of star formation at this epoch must be comparable or greater than the one inferred f…
Surface photometry of 18 Virgo cluster dwarf elliptical (dE) and dwarf lenticular (dS0) galaxies, made by Gavazzi et al. (2001) in the H-band (1.65 micron) and in the B-band (0.44 micron), shows that the ratio of the effective radii of these stellar systems in the B- and H-band, r_{e B}/r_{e H}, ranges between 0.7 and 2.2. In particular, dwarf ellipticals and lenticulars with a red total color index B-H (i.e. with 3.2 < B-H < 4) have equal effective radii in these two pass-bands. By contrast, blue (i.e. with 2.5 < B-H < 3.1) dEs and dS0s have B-band effective radii about 50% longer than the H-…
We report on time-series photometric observations in the earliest stages of superoutbursts of the extreme dwarf novae, AL Com and WZ Sge, which started on 2001 May after the 6 years quiescence and on 2001 July after the 23 years quiescence, respectively. We detected growth of ``early superhumps'' during the each rising stage. Our observations reject the mass transfer instability for the trigger of the superoutburst of WZ Sge stars, and show the existence of some relations between the ``early superhumps'' and the spiral structure, which give a hint of the origin of the ``early superhumps.''
We present a detailed analysis of two-band HST/ACS imaging of 21 ultra-compact dwarf (UCD) galaxies in the Virgo and Fornax Clusters. The aim of this work is to test two formation hypotheses for UCDs--whether they are bright globular clusters (GCs) or "threshed'' early-type dwarf galaxies--by comparison of UCD structural parameters and colors with GCs and galaxy nuclei. We find that the UCD surface brightness profiles can be described by a range of models and that the luminous UCDs can not be described by standard King models with tidal cutoffs as they have extended outer halos. This is not ex…
In this letter we present a study of the size luminosity relation of 475 early-type galaxies in the Virgo Cluster with Sloan Digital Sky Survey imaging data. The analysis of our homogeneous, model-independent data set reveals that giant and dwarf early-type galaxies do not form one common sequence in this relation. The dwarfs seem to show weak or no dependence on luminosity, and do not fall on the extension of the rather steep relation of the giants. Under the assumption that the light profile shape varies continuously with magnitude, a curved relation of size and magnitude would be expected. …
The Local Group contains some dwarf galaxies that apparently formed all their stars early, lost their gas to winds or ionization, and survive today as ``fossils'' from the epoch of reionization. This study presents new models of these objects based on the hierarchical chemical evolution framework of Tumlinson (2006). The model accurately reproduces the observed luminosity-metallicity relation of fossil dwarf galaxies with minimal free parameters. When calibrated to this relation, the models show that small dark matter ``minihalos'' formed 2 - 8% of their baryonic mass into stars prior during r…
The known galaxies most dominated by dark matter (Draco, Ursa Minor and Andromeda IX) are satellites of the Milky Way and the Andromeda galaxies. They are members of a class of faint galaxies, devoid of gas, known as dwarf spheroidals, and have by far the highest ratio of dark to luminous matter. None of the models proposed to unravel their origin can simultaneously explain their exceptional dark matter content and their proximity to a much larger galaxy. Here we report simulations showing that the progenitors of these galaxies were probably gas-dominated dwarf galaxies that became satellites …
AIMS: We analyse the photometric properties of the early-type Fornax cluster dwarf galaxy population, based on a wide field imaging study of the central cluster area in V and I. We used the instrument/telescope combination IMACS/Magellan at Las Campanas Observatory, providing much larger light collecting area and better image resolution than previous surveys. METHODS: We create a fiducial sample of Fornax cluster dwarf ellipticals (dEs) in the following three steps: (1) To verify cluster membership, we measured I-band surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) distances to candidate dEs; (2) We re-a…
The fraction of stellar mass contained in globular clusters (GCs), also measured by number as the specific frequency, is a fundamental quantity that reflects both a galaxy's early star formation and its entire merging history. We present specific frequencies, luminosities, and mass fractions for the globular cluster systems of 100 early-type galaxies in the ACS Virgo Cluster Survey, the largest homogeneous catalog of its kind. We find that 1) GC mass fractions can be high in both giants and dwarfs, but are universally low in galaxies with intermediate luminosities. 2) The behavior of specific …
We carried out time-resolved photometric observations of an SU UMa type dwarf nova, BC UMa, during its superoutburst in February 2003. We detect early superhumps (or outburst orbital humps) during the first two days of the outburst. The period of early superhumps is 0.06258(13) d and the amplitude is 0.04 mag. After the early superhump phase, common superhumps with an amplitude of 0.3 mag and a period of 0.064466(16) d developed. The change rate of superhump periods was positive through the superoutburst. The superhump period excess is 3% and we derive a mass ratio of 0.13. This is twice as la…
As part of the Advanced Camera for Survey (ACS) Virgo Cluster Survey, we have measured Surface Brightness Fluctuations (SBF) in a sample of 100 early-type Virgo galaxies. Distances derived from these measurements are needed to explore the three-dimensional structure of the Virgo Cluster, study the intrinsic parameters of globular clusters associated with the program galaxies, and compare with the galaxy distances derived from globular cluster luminosity functions. Our SBF measurements have been performed in the F850LP bandpass of the Wide Field Channel of the ACS on the Hubble Space Telescope.…
From a quantitative analysis of 413 Virgo cluster early-type dwarf galaxies (dEs) with Sloan Digital Sky Survey imaging data, we find that the dE class can be divided into multiple subpopulations that differ significantly in their morphology and clustering properties. Three dE subclasses are shaped like thick disks and show no central clustering: (1) dEs with disk features like spiral arms or bars, (2) dEs with central star formation, and (3) ordinary, bright dEs that have no or only a weak nucleus. These populations probably formed from infalling progenitor galaxies. In contrast, ordinary nuc…
We investigate the nature of the newly discovered Ultra Faint dwarf spheroidal galaxies (UF dSphs) in a general cosmological context simultaneously accounting for various ``classical`` dSphs and Milky Way properties including their Metallicity Distribution Function (MDF). To this aim we extend the merger tree approach previously developed to include the presence of star-forming minihaloes, and an heuristic prescription for radiative feedback. The model successfully reproduces both the observed [Fe/H]-Luminosity relation and the mean MDF of UFs. In this picture UFs are the oldest, most dark mat…
We report final results from our 2.5 year infrared parallax program carried out with the European Southern Observatory 3.5m New Technology Telescope and the SOFI infrared camera. Our program targeted precision astrometric observations of ten T type brown dwarfs in the J band. Full astrometric solutions (including trigonometric parallaxes) for nine T dwarfs are provided along with proper motion solutions for a further object. We find that HgCdTe-based infrared cameras are capable of delivering precision differential astrometry. For T dwarfs, infrared observations are to be greatly preferred ove…
We have computed optical Zeeman spectra of magnetic white dwarfs for field strengths between 10 and 200MG and effective temperatures between 8000 and 40000K. They form a database containing 20628 sets of flux and circular polarization spectra. A least-squares optimization code based on an evolutionary strategy can recover relatively complex magnetic field topologies from phase-resolved synthetic Zeeman spectra of rotating magnetic white dwarfs. We consider dipole and quadrupole components which are non-aligned and shifted off-centre. The model geometries include stars with a single high-field …
Recent observations have reported that some gas-rich dwarf irregular (dIrr) galaxies appear to have spherical distributions in the outer underlying old and intermediate-age stellar populations (e.g., NGC 6822). These observations imply that some dIrr's have two distinct (or ``two-component'') structures, i.e., inner disky and outer spherical ones, though the number fraction of dIrr's with such structures remains observationally unclear. We discuss how such two distinct structures are formed during dIrr formation based on observations and simulations. Our numerical simulations show that the rem…
We have obtained the first beryllium measurements of late F/early G-type stars in the old open cluster M67 (4.5 Gyr) and in the intermediate age cluster IC 4651 (1.7 Gyr). One member of the young cluster IC 2391 (~50 Myr) was also observed. Our sample stars have effective temperatures within a range of +30 - +380 K from the solar temperature. All our sample stars, including the Sun and the young cluster star have, within the errors, the same Be abundance. This result implies that late F/early G-type stars undergo very little (if any) Be depletion during their main-sequence life-time. Since the…
Early-type dwarfs are the most common galaxy in the local universe, yet their origin and evolution remain a mystery. Various cosmological scenarios predict that dwarf-like galaxies in dense areas are the first to form and hence should be the oldest stellar systems in clusters. By using radial velocities of early-type dwarfs in the Virgo cluster we demonstrate that these galaxies are not an old cluster population but have signatures of production from the infall of field galaxies. Evidence of this includes the combined large dispersions and sub-structure in spatial and kinematic distributions f…
Clouds of metal-bearing condensates play a critical role in shaping the emergent spectral energy distributions of the coolest classes of low-mass stars and brown dwarfs, L and T dwarfs. Because condensate clouds in planetary atmospheres show distinct horizontal structure, we have explored a model for partly cloudy atmospheres in brown dwarfs. Our model successfully reproduces the colors and magnitudes of both L and T dwarfs for the first time, including the unexpected brightning of the early- and mid-type T dwarfs at J-band, provided that clouds are rapidly removed from the photosphere at T_ef…
The formation of objects below or close to the hydrogen burning limit is currently vividly discussed and is one of the main open issues in the field of the origins of stars and planets. Applying various observational techniques, we explored a sample of brown dwarfs and very low-mass stars in the ChaI star forming cloud at an age of only a few million years and determined fundamental parameters for their formation and early evolution. Tracking the question of how frequent are brown dwarf binaries and if brown dwarfs have planets, one of the first radial velocity (RV) surveys of brown dwarfs sen…
A dwarf nova HV Vir was observed photometrically for eight nights during the outburst in 1992 April - May. The star showed two distinct types of periodic variation: (1) 82.20-min (0.05708 d) double-humped variation with decaying amplitudes during the early stage of the outburst, and (2) 83.80-min (0.05820 d) superhumps in later stages. We attributed the former to "early superhumps", which are only seen in the earliest stage of WZ Sge-type outbursts. The superhump period and evolution of the superhumps, together with general characteristics of the light curve, make HV Vir a typical WZ Sge-type …
(Abridged) Aims: Systematic surveys to search for exoplanets have been mostly dedicated to solar-type stars sofar. We developed in 2004 a method to extend such searches to earlier A-F type dwarfs and started spectroscopic surveys to search for planets and quantify the detection limit achievable when taking into account the stars properties and their actual levels of intrinsic variations. We give here the first results of our southern survey with HARPS. Results: 1) 64% of the 170 stars with enough data points are found to be variable. 20 are found to be binaries or candidate binaries (with star…
